Memorial Day Cruise: Take a Weekend Cruise Getaway

By Carnival Cruise Line

Memorial Day can be a great holiday to spend outdoors with your friends and family (or your family of friends). However, if crowded beaches and busy city parks are not your idea of an ideal vacation, why not consider spending Memorial Day on a fun-filled cruise? The open seas, exotic ports of call, enticing shore excursions , great amenities and delicious food — that you don’t have to grill yourself — are just a few of the wonderful options when you’re on a cruise. Ready to set sail? Here are four things to look forward to on a Memorial Day cruise.

Great Dining Options

Who doesn’t like the traditional Memorial Day food grilled up just right? From hot dogs to hamburgers, Carnival has you covered. Our Memorial Day weekend cruise offers guests a wide variety of delicious and familiar foods, including the traditional picnic sandwiches, alongside family favorites such as baked beans, roasted potatoes, ice cream, and more. Visitors can also enjoy a tasty, juicy steak or some all-American apple pie. If you’re looking for something a bit more Southern — or even south of the border — we also boast a barbecue restaurant ( Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que ) and a Mexican cantina ( BlueIgauna Cantina ). With so many tasty options, you can celebrate the freedom of choice when you cruise — and don’t worry, we’ll even handle the cleanup.

Cruise to Bermuda

What could be better than setting sail for a Memorial Day cruise from New York , the quintessential American city? This classic cruise travels to sunny Bermuda. Guests lucky enough to book this four-day cruise can experience all our newly refreshed ship , Carnival Sunrise, has to offer. This state-of-the-art vessel comes complete with amenities and activities that the whole family will enjoy. Catch the breeze with our ropes course , situated high above the ship’s deck. Let the kids splash around at WaterWorks, or make new friends on the new mini-golf course. The older crowd can relax at the adult-only Serenity Retreat, or sit back with a drink at the RedFrog Pub . With so many options for adults and children alike, this modern ship is the perfect fit for friends and families.

Once in beautiful Bermuda, guests can also take advantage of the attractions at this gorgeous port of call. Whether you want to snorkel or Segway, kayak or bike, Bermuda’s shore is full of options for the adventurous traveler. Beyond this, visitors who cruise to Bermuda can also enjoy tours, a fascinating aquarium, energetic party cruises and even a rum tasting. Of course, you may just want to relax on the beach and enjoy the Memorial Day sunshine — and that’s okay, too.

Enjoy The Bahamas

For those sailing from Miami , The Bahamas are just a short cruise away. Once our ship lands, guests can partake in a variety of attractions and activities in this tropical destination. Visitors can choose from a variety of things to do, from luxury sailing to swimming with dolphins. Of course, these are just a few of the wonderful options during a Memorial Day cruise. Guests can also rent a relaxing private bungalow or cabana, take a bike adventure around the island, or try their hand at scuba diving! The Bahamas also have many shore excursions that are a perfect fit for the whole family, including a family beach escape, a historic nature walk and the chance to get up close and personal with some stingrays. With so many things to do, you may just need to come back after the holidays.

Sail to Baja, Mexico

Another fantastic cruise option is to sail from Long Beach, California down to Baja, Mexico . This Memorial Day cruise will take voyagers to a port of call destination with a wide array of experiences to explore. Outdoor adventurers will enjoy options such as a horseback trail, ATV riding or surf lessons at Playa Hermosa. However, Baja also has a lot to offer the aspiring connoisseur. Visitors can get a taste of wine country, visit local breweries to experience the craft beer scene, and enjoy a taste of Mexico while learning how to cook the local cuisine. Not the outdoor or foodie type? You’re in luck — you can enjoy a resort getaway or step out in the city for a shopping tour. Whether you want to hit the waves or relax with a tasty tequila, Baja certainly has something for you!

When you book a Memorial Day cruise with Carnival, you have plenty of options to make it the perfect fit for you and your family. Not only can you choose from a variety of exciting and exotic destinations, such as Bermuda or The Bahamas, but you’re also able to pick a menu that fits your desired holiday celebration. Better yet? Our four-day cruise to Bermuda also allows visitors to enjoy everything Carnival Sunrise has to offer. We wish you a happy and healthy holiday on the open seas!

LONG WEEKEND CRUISES

Published on May 15, 2019

Royal Caribbean's Instagram for Live Updates

It's tempting to think of a cruise as an epic ocean escape, but you don't need a long trip to have a great adventure. Spend a long weekend exploring the pristine, white beaches of the Bahamas, the ancient Tulum Ruins in Mexico or the sky-blue waters of the Eastern Caribbean during holiday weekends such as Memorial Day and Labor Day.

WHERE WILL YOUR NEXT WEEKEND CRUISE TAKE YOU?

Woman Snorkeling by a Coral, Bermuda

Don't let the long weekend flash before your eyes — see the world instead! Choose among these unforgettable destinations and make the most of your long weekend on a 3 to 5-night cruise. Gather your gang and put the nine-to-five behind you as you embrace island time. From zip-lining over the stunning waters of Haiti to snorkeling off the pink beaches of Bermuda , you'll be sure to bring new meaning to the term weekend warrior.

OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!

Mexico Ancient Ruins

In just a few days, you can cruise to Mexico and explore the world-famous beach resort of Cancun, discover colorful Cozumel and traipse through the ancient Tulum Ruins. Venture inland into the jungles of the Yucatán or underground into the iconic cenote swimming holes. Mexico is close to many U.S. cruise ports, such as Galveston , which makes it an ideal choice for shorter cruise itineraries.

Another excellent choice would be the Bahamas, which is the most convenient option if you plan to cruise from Florida. The wide variety of ports within the islands of the Bahamas themselves make this a perfect destination for Memorial Day weekend cruises. Calling at Nassau allows you to explore the vibrant capital of the Bahamas, while wilder adventures await in Bimini, Paradise Island and beyond. Further sweetening the deal is Perfect Day at CocoCay , where the kids can brave the largest wave pool in the Caribbean while you belly up to the swim-up bar.

Jamaica Falmouth Musicians

One of the best last-minute tips for weekend cruises is to select ports like luxurious Grand Cayman and Falmouth, Jamaica , which are far enough from the mainland that they might not be as crowded as closer options. Other popular cruise destinations in the Western Caribbean include San Juan, resort-filled Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic and even the port of Labadee in Haiti — where you can find thrilling adventure on the world's longest over-water zip line.

Alternatively, if you can stretch your Labor Day weekend cruise beyond just a few nights, you might venture deep into the Eastern Caribbean . Dock at ports within and beyond the U.S. and British Virgin Islands to discover some of the most exotic jewels of the tropical Atlantic. Sink your toes into the golden sand of Pinney's Beach on St. Kitts and Nevis, hike above the sea in Cabrits National Park on Dominica and marvel at contrasting cultures on the Dutch-French island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. Or head further north to Bermuda, whose azure waters and pink beaches are warmed year-round by the jet stream.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CALLS

Many of the best Memorial Day cruise destinations are interchangeable with places you might go over the Labor Day holiday. Memorial Day activities for the whole family, such as letting loose on CocoCay private in the Bahamas , are just as enticing in late May as they are in early September.

On the other hand, some important advantages present themselves to travelers who are able to cruise during the Memorial Day holiday, no matter who you're traveling with or where you sail from. If you're looking for Memorial Day weekend getaways for couples, keep in mind that school tends to be out during May. Therefore, while family-friendly destinations such as the Bahamas and Mexico will be on the crowded side, romantic escapes to St. Kitts and Nevis or even Bermuda might have more availability. Have a private, romantic moment at Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos, widely considered one of the best beaches in the Caribbean . Couples might also consider dipping into their paid time off hours, since extending a weekend cruise to include Thursday or Tuesday will reduce the number of other travelers able to take the trip.

None of which is to say that Memorial Day weekend cruises for families are a non-starter, particularly if you start shopping now. After determining how many days you can cruise and where you want to depart from, you can immediately begin browsing Memorial Day cruises. For instance, if you live in Atlanta, you can fly or drive your family to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami and take a 2 or 3-night cruise to family-friendly CocoCay private island.

As is the case for general long weekend travel or even trips you take over Labor Day, many of the best cruises are the most adventurous ones. Why not head beyond the comforts of Cancun to the lesser docked-at cruise ports of Belize? Whatever you do, allow your brainstorming and research to be fun. After all, Labor Day is meant to be a break from work, not create more of it.

GET AWAY THIS LABOR DAY

Puerto Rico Traditional Homes

The good news is that while Labor Day is a popular time to travel, possibilities for Labor Day weekend cruises are practically unlimited. If you combine this built-in advantage with smart strategic moves, like booking early and leaving from a convenient departure port, you'll manage to cruise stress-free at one of the busiest times of the year. Moreover, being open to a wide range of destinations — from top choices like the Bahamas and Cancun to secondary options like Puerto Rico — further sweetens the deal.

Assuming you can only take three days for your Labor Day cruise, most of the best cruises are going to be the ones closest to you. If you live in the Northeast, you might depart from New Jersey's Cape Liberty Cruise Port for Bermuda, which is the closest major cruise destination to the New York City area . For a trip like this, the journey is the destination — enjoy the cerulean horizon of the open Atlantic before frolicking on legendary Bermuda shores like Horseshoe Bay Beach.

Remember that flexibility opens up your options. One of the best last-minute tips, even if you plan to sail over Labor Day weekend, is to make yourself more available. This could be in terms of the number of nights. A five-night departure from Miami to the Bahamas is less likely to be fully booked during Labor Day than a shorter Bahamas cruise since many people are unable or unwilling to take off additional days. Likewise, if you can manage to fly to Houston or New York, being able to sail from Cape Liberty Cruise Port or Galveston invites additional possibilities and, depending on how full bookings are for your dates, better prices as well.

Boy Wearing his Snorkeling Mask, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Or, if you have some flexible time off work, you could choose to travel during a period adjacent to the Labor Day holiday for an even less stressful experience. Browse long weekend cruises during the last week of August or the second week of September, whether you stay close to the U.S. mainland with departures to Mexico and Belize or Grand Cayman and Puerto Rico, or take a longer cruise to Jamaica or even the Virgin Islands. Deserted Honeymoon Beach on St. Thomas beckons you, whether you're looking to relax on its sunkissed shores or get active with some snorkel gear.

PICK YOUR PORT

Couple Ready to go on a Tube Excursion. Belize City.

Proper planning is essential to making sure your trip goes off without a hitch, whether you happen to be shopping for long weekend cruises throughout the year or you've selected travel dates during the Labor or Memorial Day holiday. An important first step is choosing the right port. The majority of Americans are within a nonstop flight (or even a short drive) of Galveston, Texas , New York City , or Florida's popular Fort Lauderdale and Miami cruise terminals .

Galveston is a great choice for Labor Day weekend cruises. The most obvious reason for this is how close departing here situates you to the treasures of the Mexican Yucatan, though more distant options exist. Continue sailing south to Belize, whose otherworldly Great Blue Hole you have to see to believe, or head over to the shallows of Western Caribbean and immerse yourself in the history and culture like the ancient pyramids in Cozumel, Mexico.

If you live in the Northeast, you'll be pleased to know that many of the best cruises for shorter itineraries also depart from the New York City area. Leaving from Bayonne's Cape Liberty Cruise Port, it's easy to cruise toward the paradisiacal shores of Bermuda, whose coral-rich beaches are prone to giving off a pink color. You can also head farther south to the Bahamas, and even into the Caribbean Sea — as long as you can devote four or five nights to your cruise instead of just two or three. Explore Western and Central Caribbean destinations like Grand Cayman, or head east to Antigua and Barbuda, where the panoramic lookout from Shirley Heights will have you feeling on top of the world, literally.

Florida, which has two very popular ports of departure, is perhaps the best place to set off on Memorial Day weekend cruises. In addition to the fact that you'll be able to shop sailings from both Miami and Fort Lauderdale, both locations put you in a great position to explore the Caribbean Sea. For shorter trips, you'll likely stick to nearby islands like the Bahamas and Grand Cayman, though you might also be able to reach Jamaica or even the Virgin Islands if you have a few additional days to spare. In fact, Florida is arguably the optimal place to depart from on more adventurous cruises, since you start being close to the most exotic destinations in the Caribbean.

There's no better way to spend an extra day off than in beachside bliss. From once-in-a-lifetime thrills to the soothing sound of lapping, blue waves, setting sail to one of these beautiful destinations is sure to make your next travel vacation one for the books with a relaxing weekend getaway or one week cruise .

Best Cruises Out Of New York

Though cruise booking generally opens several months in advance, deals on long weekend cruises may post just weeks or even days before departure. If you're flexible about when you sail, you'll enjoy some pretty sweet deals.

On the other hand, for Labor and Memorial Day weekend cruises, booking (or at least searching) early is often a fact of life. Begin shopping early in the year, and book as soon as you begin to notice availability decreasing.

Be smart when you get onboard to avoid undue stress. For example, eat before or after typical meal times, then enjoy less crowded common areas while most others are eating.

Celebrate Memorial Day at Sea: Weekend Cruises to Remember

Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember those who have served in the United States Armed Forces, a day when the nation comes together to pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. While traditional observances include parades, ceremonies, and visits to cemeteries, an increasingly popular way to commemorate this important holiday is by embarking on a Memorial Day weekend cruise. In this article, we’ll explore the idea of celebrating Memorial Day at sea, highlighting the unique experiences and opportunities for reflection that these weekend cruises offer.

The Significance of Memorial Day

Before delving into the world of Memorial Day weekend cruises, it’s essential to understand the significance of this national holiday. Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, was originally known as Decoration Day and was established to honor the Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. Over time, the holiday evolved to honor all American military personnel who have died in service to their country.

Today, Memorial Day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the nation’s servicemen and women. It’s a day to remember and reflect on the courage, dedication, and patriotism that have shaped the history of the United States.

Memorial Day Weekend Cruises: A Unique Way to Commemorate

While Memorial Day is a solemn occasion, it’s also an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate the freedoms and privileges they enjoy as citizens of the United States. Memorial Day weekend cruises offer a unique blend of commemoration and celebration, allowing passengers to pay their respects while enjoying the beauty of the open sea and the many amenities and activities a cruise ship has to offer.

  • Reflecting on the Heroes: Many Memorial Day weekend cruises incorporate special ceremonies and events to honor veterans and active-duty military personnel. Passengers can participate in flag-raising ceremonies, wreath-laying ceremonies, and moments of silence to remember those who have served and sacrificed.
  • Veterans’ Stories: Cruise lines often invite veterans to share their stories and experiences, providing passengers with a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by those in the military.
  • Red, White, and Blue: Cruise ships are adorned with patriotic decorations, and passengers are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue attire to show their support for the armed forces.
  • Entertainment and Fun: Memorial Day weekend cruises also offer plenty of opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment. Passengers can indulge in gourmet dining, live entertainment, and a wide range of onboard activities, ensuring that the holiday is a memorable experience for all.

Destinations and Itineraries

The appeal of Memorial Day weekend cruises goes beyond the onboard experience. Cruise lines offer a variety of itineraries that allow passengers to explore different destinations, making the holiday even more special. Here are a few popular Memorial Day cruise destinations:

  • Caribbean Getaway: For those seeking sun, sand, and turquoise waters, a Memorial Day cruise to the Caribbean is a perfect choice. Explore tropical islands, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and soak up the vibrant local culture.
  • Alaskan Adventure: Memorial Day is an ideal time to embark on an Alaskan cruise. Witness breathtaking glaciers, spot wildlife like whales and bald eagles, and marvel at the rugged beauty of America’s Last Frontier.
  • European Exploration: Discover the rich history and culture of Europe on a Memorial Day weekend cruise. Visit iconic cities like Barcelona, Rome, or Athens and immerse yourself in centuries of history and tradition.
  • New England Charm: Cruise along the picturesque coastline of New England and Canada, where you can explore charming towns, savor fresh seafood, and witness the stunning beauty of the fall foliage.

Commemorative Activities Onboard

While the destinations are undoubtedly enticing, it’s the onboard activities and experiences that make Memorial Day weekend cruises truly special. Here are some of the commemorative activities you can expect to find:

  • Veterans’ Appreciation Events: Cruise lines often host special gatherings and receptions for veterans and active-duty military personnel, where they are honored and celebrated for their service.
  • Memorial Services: Thoughtful and respectful memorial services are held onboard, providing passengers with an opportunity to pay their respects to fallen heroes and reflect on the true meaning of the holiday.
  • Patriotic Themed Parties: Memorial Day weekend cruises feature festive parties with live music, dancing, and a patriotic atmosphere. Passengers can enjoy themed cocktails and a lively ambiance.
  • Educational Programs: Many cruise lines invite historians and experts to give talks and presentations about the history and significance of Memorial Day, providing passengers with a deeper understanding of the holiday.
  • Veterans’ Panels: Passengers have the chance to engage with veterans and hear their personal stories and experiences, fostering a sense of connection and gratitude.

Remembering and Giving Back

While Memorial Day cruises offer opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment, it’s essential to remember the holiday’s solemn purpose. Here are a few ways passengers can make their Memorial Day cruise more meaningful:

  • Participate in Onboard Ceremonies: Attend flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies, observe moments of silence, and actively participate in the ship’s commemorative events.
  • Support Military Charities: Consider making a donation to a military charity during your cruise to contribute to the well-being of veterans and active-duty service members.
  • Share Stories: Engage with veterans and active-duty military personnel on the cruise, listen to their stories, and express your gratitude for their service.
  • Take Part in Acts of Kindness: Small acts of kindness, such as thanking military personnel for their service or offering assistance to veterans, can go a long way in showing appreciation.

Memorial Day weekend cruises provide a unique and meaningful way to commemorate this important holiday. They offer passengers the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes while enjoying the beauty and luxury of a cruise vacation. Whether you choose to embark on a Caribbean adventure, explore the wilds of Alaska, or discover the history of Europe, a Memorial Day cruise is an unforgettable way to celebrate, honor, and remember. So, consider setting sail this Memorial Day to create cherished memories and pay tribute to those who have served our country.

At sea, you will have the opportunity to explore a great variety of ports. First up is Great Stirrup Cay , Norwegian’s exclusive, private island and the quintessential vacation experience. The waters are sparking turquoise, the sand is snow-white, and the average winter temperature is 75 degrees. You can snorkel amongst the protected marine life (and maybe even spot a school of sea turtles), or quietly explore by kayak. Because Great Stirrup Cay is owned by Norwegian, you can enjoy complimentary dining in the island, which can result in significant savings!

Next up: the port of Nassau , The Bahamas’ busting hub of activity. Here you can sample local restaurants and shopping, where you’ll find everything local crafts, such as intricate straw baskets and colorful jewelry, as well as an extravaganza of duty-free shopping on luxury items, ranging from electronic gadgets to diamond watches.

Short Memorial Day Cruises on our Bigger Ships

It is rare for some of Norwegian's larger ships to do shorter itineraries. For the first time ever, you have the unique opportunity to enjoy the fantastic Norwegian Breakaway during Memorial Day on a 4-day Bahamas itinerary. Norwegian Breakaway is well known for its delightful top deck, huge array of dining options (indoors and on The Waterfront), and its unforgettable spa.

Norwegian Breakaway's activities range from relaxing to action-packed. Spend the day at the Thermal Suite in the Mandara Spa , where you can wind down at the vitality pool before detoxing at one of the saunas. You can then bring your body's temperature down while you take a nap on one of the heated mosaic lounge chairs. If you're looking for an exciting day on the top deck, head to the Ropes Course, play a round of mini-golf, or cool-off in one of the five waterslides in the Aqua Park.

Although you may want to and could easily spend the entire cruise aboard the ship, this particular Memorial Day Weekend itinerary is also full of tropical port stops: Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau .

Longer Memorial Day Cruise from New York

Take advantage of that long weekend and go on a longer cruise. Consider this 7-Day Bermuda from New York that sets sail the Sunday before Memorial Day. Escape the beach crowds as you set sail aboard Norwegian's newest and most exciting ship, Norwegian Encore . Norwegian Encore features the largest racetrack at sea, extending 13 feet over the side of the ship and the Galaxy Pavilion, an immersive virtual reality gaming experience. Passengers will also be able to enjoy amazing entertainment , including the Tony Award-winning musical Kinky Boots and Choir of Man.

After enjoying Norwegian Encore's ship activities with two days at sea, you will arrive to beautiful Bermuda . This destination is renowned for its pink sand beaches and tangerine sunsets (perfect for family selfies), is also famous for its golf courses. Talk about a destination crowd pleaser!

Memorial Day cruise sales for your next weekend getaway

From cookouts to getting away for the long weekend, we have a few ideas for how to spend your much-deserved day off..

Memorial Day. The day that those of us in the United States honor those who put their lives on the line while serving in the military. And we’re incredibly grateful for their service.

It’s also become the unofficial start of summer. That sweet day off. Laptops closed. Sun on your face. Falling on the last Monday of May, it marks the first long weekend for so many of us where we get to attend BBQs, host BBQs, or skip them all together and give ourselves a little me-time. And maybe you’ll even be on board with us, in which case, we can’t wait to host you — doing all the grilling and the dishes. Sun on your face included, of course, from the Caribbean to the Med.

Memorial Day Weekend Ideas

Host a cookout.

  • Give yourself a spa day

Travel for the weekend

No plans yet? Need a little inspo for Memorial Day Weekend? No prob — because we have a few Virgin Voyages-inspired ideas to make your long weekend count.

Ahh, the classic Memorial Day BBQ. Where the grill is hot all day long, the hot dogs and burgers fly freely, and a nice cold beer really hits in just the right spot. And a cookout can look like anything — it doesn’t have to be fancy, because it’s really just an excuse to hang out with friends and enjoy that fresh summer weather. So fire up the group chat, make sure that grill is still working, and be the one in the friend group who makes sure there’s an event to look forward to. Want to bring a little Virgin Voyages to your cookout? Wear a splash of red. Sure, it’s giving Americana, but it’s also coyly bringing in a little bit of Scarlet Night energy to your party. And for those of you who have attended Scarlet Night on board, you know that energy is exactly what a party needs.

Give yourself a spa day

Okay, so this isn’t a traditional way to spend the holiday, but why not spice it up and do something nice for yourself? We love a spa day (and yes, we are partial to ours ), but until you can climb on board, hit a spa nearby and indulge in a massage. Or hot and cold pool dips. Or a manicure and pedicure (our nail salon has sea views, but views are absolutely not mandatory for self care). Because getting ready for summer can look like anything — and treating yourself after a long winter is exactly what you deserve.

And if the oh-my-gosh-I’m-so-glad-summer-is-finally-here vibes have inspired you to travel (further), may we suggest a seaside getaway in the Mediterranean? So let the celebrations continue well past this weekend; letting us host you in some of the most gorgeous places in the world. So give yourself something to look forward to after the blues of a long weekend ending sets in (we know, we know — don’t think about that just yet). But future epic plans on your cal? That’ll keep anyone’s spirits up long after your BBQ guests have gone home.

Unsurprisingly, we’re big on the importance of travel, even if it’s not with us. Change up your scenery and take a drive to the beach. Or a lake. Or hike that stunning place nearby you keep seeing other people go to on Instagram. With an extra day off on Memorial Day, you might as well give yourself a little change of perspective — letting nature back in before opening up that laptop again on Tuesday. Because even if you aren’t traveling on the high seas this weekend, we know how truly restorative travel can be; even if it’s just a mini-getaway.

Weekend cruises to the Caribbean

You don’t need to take off for a whole week to make the most of your Memorial Day holiday. Even if it’s just a long weekend getaway, a 4- or 5-night cruise to the Caribbean can be the perfect way to maximize your time off. This is especially true for parents who might be in desperate need of an adults-only vacation from their kids . In just a few days, you can visit multiple white-sand beaches across a variety of colorful Caribbean islands, our legendary Beach Club at Bimini , and spend plenty of time enjoying all the relaxing amenities onboard.

Cruise dining options

BBQs might be a Memorial Day tradition, but they’re a lot of work and you simply might not have the energy or motivation. Luckily, on Virgin Voyages, we do the cooking for you. 20+ eateries are included with your cruise fare , ranging from Italian fine dining and elevated Mexican street food to a casual pizza joint. That means you could spend one night throwing back shots with new friends at Gunbae, our Korean BBQ restaurant with communal dining, and the next indulging in Michelin-style small plates at Test Kitchen. And of course, there’s always the classic Memorial Day burger at Razzle Dazzle.

Hot summer vacation deals

No matter where you want to sail, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of our special deals for summer travel. We’re offering 80% off your second Sailor on all Mediterranean sailings, and 70% on all Caribbean sailings, valid for all voyages through October 29, 2025. So celebrate Memorial Day the right way and start planning for an epic summer of cruise travel .

From the charming towns of upstate New York to neighboring New Jersey , Connecticut and Pennsylvania , take your pick of these last-minute Memorial Day weekend getaways from NYC . Whether you choose the mountains or the beach , you’ll come back to the city ready to swing into summer.

Best Summer Weekend Getaways from NYC

memorial day getaways nyc: stockbridge, MA

1. Stockbridge, MA

  • Distance from NYC: 3 hours
  • Why We Recommend It: nature walks, summer festivals, cultural attractions
  • Where to Stay: Red Lion Inn (from $229/night, sleeps 2); The Granary at House on Golden Hill (from $109/night, sleeps 4); Historic 1810 Farmhouse (from $264/night, sleeps 7)

Catskills : Been there, road-tripped that. This year, go east of the Hudson to the Berkshires. Not only does it have the same cabin-and-trees situation, but it’s also rife with history. Norman Rockwell’s old studio is located here, featuring the largest collection of the artist’s work. Summer’s also a lovely time to visit the Berkshire Botanical Garden , which houses more than 3,000 species on 24 lush acres. Architecture buffs will enjoy an afternoon at Naumkeag , the 48-acre estate once belonging to the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, Joseph Choate. The “cottage” has 44 rooms, which you can tour in the summer, plus eight acres of formal gardens, in addition to meadows and farmland. After you’ve exhausted yourself, refreshment at the Rose Garden Cafe is essential (They also serve high tea on select weekends.)

memorial day weekend getaways nyc: old saybrook CT

2. Old Saybrook, CT

  • Distance from NYC: 5 hours
  • Why We Recommend It: quaint, beach access, road trip
  • Where to Stay: Saybrook Point Resort & Marina (inquire for rates); Storybook Cottage (from $243/night, sleeps 4); 1920s South Cove Dollhouse (from $225/night, sleeps 2)

This little town on the shores of eastern Connecticut is basically one long Main Street—quaint New England at its finest. Stay at the Saybrook Point Resort & Marina for a home base that epitomizes old-world charm. (It’s also just a 20-minute walk to the beach.) Then, beeline for the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center , where you can catch a flick and walk through the museum, which displays memorabilia documenting the Hollywood legend’s life and career. Outdoor fans will appreciate time hiking through the coastal forest of The Preserve, a 1,700-acre enclave spanning Old Saybrook, Essex and Westbrook. And for the vintage enthusiasts, a stop at Essex Saybrook Antiques Village is essential. Here, 50-plus dealers hawk everything from furniture to antiques and jewelry in a 6,000-square-foot warehouse.

memorial day weekend getaways nyc rehoboth beach de

3. Rehoboth Beach, DE

  • Distance from NYC: 3 hours and 50 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: family-friendly, beach town, affordable
  • Where to Stay: Coastal Cottage (from $209/night, sleeps 10); R ehoboth Beach Townhouse (from $440; $397/night, sleeps 4); Cozy Creekwood Getaway (from $96/night, sleeps 6)

If you’re looking to throw a big family bash, load up the RV and head over to Rehoboth Beach. The almost four-hour drive is the perfect amount of time to crank up some tunes and sing along without everyone losing their minds. And when you get there, everyone can tumble out directly into Funland, an amusement park where the kids can have a field day with carnival games and rides. Haul everyone to the boardwalk for more diverse entertainment. There’s a summer weekend concert series and no paucity of culinary delights—ice cream, baked goods, sweets, restaurants and taprooms abound. (Though if you had to choose, dip into Conch Island Key West Bar and Grill , a local institution with live music.) There’s a plethora of shops, too. From antiques to clothing, art, farmers markets and wineries, everyone will find something to enjoy.

Looking for Memorial Day Weekend getaways from NYC right on the water? Say hello to Cape May, a beach town located at the southernmost tip of New Jersey . It’s filled to the brim with pastel-colored bed and breakfasts, antique shops, tennis courts and trolleys. You’ll want to check out the Emlen Physick Estate , an 18-room Victorian mansion designed by architect Frank Furness. A guided tour will show you characteristic Victorian Stick Style architecture and the way of life of the Physick family during the period. Afterwards, head over to Washington Street Mall , known as “the heart of Cape May.” Here, you’ll find Art Block Café , a coffee shop and art studio where you can sip boba, matcha and coffee while crafting. For some killer views, climb to the top of the Cape May lighthouse , which is still in operation. To get there, wind your way through the peaceful trails of Cape May Point State Park .

memorial day weekend getaways nyc newport ri

5. Newport, RI

  • Distance from NYC: 3 hours and 45 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: nature walks, unique architecture, sailing
  • Where to Stay: Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina (from $439/night, sleeps 2); Newport Tree House (from $224/night, sleeps 5); Downtown Newport Apartment (from $66/night, sleeps 4)

Newport is just the destination for a Memorial Day Weekend getaway from NYC if you love The Gilded Age . Renowned for its mansions, the town is home to some incredibly sumptuous summer homes, including the legendary, Vanderbilt-owned Breakers . It holds the reputation as Newport’s most opulent “cottage”—if Italian Palazzo design, 50-foot ceilings, 70 rooms and 13 acres count as a cottage. Be sure to also visit the Marble House, built by William Vanderbilt as a 39 th birthday present for his wife, Alva. Not an architecture fan? The Sailing Museum presents an enthralling dive into the sport. But if we’re being totally honest, we came for the oysters. ( The Deck at Waite’s Wharf, Bar and Board Bistro and iconic The Black Pearl won’t steer you wrong.)

memorial day weekend getaways nyc block island ri

6. Block Island, RI

  • Distance from NYC: 3 hours and 15 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: isolated, relaxing, tons of shopping
  • Where to Stay: Historic Mitchell Cottage (from $396/night, sleeps 4); New Harbor House (from $253/night, sleeps 14); Mott Hill Cottage (from $134/night, sleeps 2)

If you’re the type who likes to unplug on vacation (i.e., phoneless with zero chance of running into Erin from accounting at the Surf Lodge), this secluded isle off the coast of Rhode Island is just the ticket. Take the Amtrak to New London, Connecticut, where the train stops just steps from the Block Island Ferry dock, and you’re golden. Make your first stop the Block Island Historical Society , a quaint museum near New Shoreham exploring the region’s history. Here, you can learn about the region’s geological formation, Indigenous people and Victorian life. Another locale worth the stop is the North Lighthouse in New Shoreham. While you can’t climb to the top, you can visit the maritime museum on the first floor. And for those who truly want to unplug, book an appointment at the award-winning Koru Eco Spa —the signature sacred stone massage is a must.

memorial day weekend getaways nyc: shelter island ny

7. Shelter Island, NY

  • Why We Recommend It: quiet getaway, boutique hotels, seafood
  • Where to Stay: Summer Paradise (from $300/night, sleeps 8); Island Boat Yard Home (from $561/night, sleeps 8); Casa Gypsea (from $390/night, sleeps 6)

OK, so forget Block Island—you’re dying to go out East. Try Shelter Island instead, in East Hampton just a hop and skip from Montauk. It’s quickly becoming its own hot summer destination. You’ll get the Long Island vibes you love, from sunbathing on Crescent Beach to hiking in Mashomack Nature Preserve . The outdoor-loving sporty people in your party will also appreciate kayaking to Taylors Island. (It’s only accessible by water—but renting a kayak is easy .) Be sure to check spend an hour or two at Havens’ House Museum , which explores the island’s history and sells books and goods by local artists and authors. And you’ll be needing a legendary milkshake at the Shelter Island Heights Pharmacy .

memorial day weekend getaways nyc: montauk ny

8. Montauk, NY

  • Why We Recommend It: small town, fishing, state parks
  • Where to Stay: Marram (from $704/night, sleeps 2); Montauk Beach Bungalow (from $289/night, sleeps 4); Laid-Back Surf Shack (from $258/night, sleeps 4)

You just caught a ride to the Hamptons on Friday night. Score. Now, where to stay? For a true surf-inspired weekend, head to Marram . Chic quarters, beach cruisers and your choice of the waves or the pool. But don’t spend the entire weekend lounging. Adventure awaits. See the quintessential Montauk Point Lighthouse (and its museum) or take a hike at Amsterdam Beach State Park . (Note: The beach is rocky, and the hike is moderate.) If you want a unique experience, head to Deep Hollow Ranch , and they’ll lead you on a beach ride. Where food is concerned, you’re not in want of good eats. Duryea’s Lobster Deck slings seafood, Sel Rose makes a mean brunch and every local is throwing back a pint at Montauk Brewing Company .

memorial day weekend getaways nyc: catskills ny

9. The Catskills, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 1 hour and 50 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: short drive, family-friendly, diverse activities
  • Where to Stay: Modern A-Frame Cabin (from $320/night, sleeps 8); Crows Nest Mountain Chalet (from $314/night, sleeps 4); Catskills Log Cabin (from $194/night, sleeps 6)

This may seem like an obvious choice, but the Catskills are popular for a reason. There is no shortage of things to do—from touring historic sites, to hiking Kaaterskill Falls , visiting local animal parks and even catching a theatre play. We recommend checking out the Hudson River Skywalk , a six-mile stretch that connects the Thomas Cole and Frederic Church national historic sites. At the former, you can visit the home and studios of the artist, environmentalist and founder of the Hudson River School of American landscape painting.

memorial day weekend getaways nyc Amagansett ny

10. Amagansett, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 2 hours and 5 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: tons of beaches, relaxing, small town vibes
  • Where to Stay: The Roundtree (from $1,145/night, sleeps 2); Amagansett Village Cottage (from $575/night, sleeps 4); Napeague Beach House (from $271/night, sleeps 10)

When you visit Amagansett, take things up a notch (or three) at The Roundtree, where you can book your very own cottage complete with Frette linens, rainforest shower heads, continental room service breakfast and in-room massages. (And those are just some of the super-luxe perks available.) Once you’ve settled in, head out to Amber Waves Farm, Market and Cafe where you can indulge in fresh juice, pastries and a seasonal menu. Or grab everything to-go and picnic on Indian Wells Beach . (Though the destination has a slew of food trucks to choose from.) And should you want to spend the weekend partying, there’s no better place to do that than The Stephen Talkhouse , a local and mythical live music venue that’s hosted local acts and international performers alike.

memorial day weekend getaways mystic ct

11. Mystic, CT

  • Why We Recommend It: small town charm, quiet, family-friendly
  • Where to Stay: The Mooring House (from $700/night, sleeps 8); Mystic Hideaway (from $178/night, sleeps 6); SeaWolf House (from $179/night, sleeps 4)

Historic Mystic is the ultimate antithesis to New York City. This little town is always bustling with tourists but is not nearly as overcrowded as the Big Apple. Known for its maritime culture, there are plenty of water-based activities for the family to partake in, from kayaking to power boating. Those who prefer to stay on solid ground can have a blast at the Mystic Seaport Museum —the nation’s leading maritime museum—or head to the Mystic Aquarium for some quality time with the whales. And if water really isn’t your jive, then a stroll through the charming Old Mistick Village will be. Stock up on peculiar books at Alice’s Haunted Little Bookshop , channel your inner kid and pick up a kit at Mystic Kite Shop and finish the day at Mango’s Wood Fired Pizza Co .

memorial day weekend getaways nyc tarrytown ny

12. Tarrytown, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: quaint village, short trip, boutique shopping
  • Where to Stay: Tarrytown Studio (from $200/night, sleeps 4); Charming Victorian Home (from $373/night, sleeps 9); Modern Duplex (from $286/night, sleeps 10)

Maybe you don’t want to go too far away from the city; you just want to escape the Memorial Day madness. Head over to Tarrytown, which is only an hour and 15 minutes away. Merely 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan, this village is also served by a stop on the Metro-North Hudson line, so you don’t have to worry about traffic. Once you touch down, you can spend the day shopping at the various local boutiques, like the cabinet of curiosities, Bella’s Boutique . Bookworms will want to steep themselves in the literary history by paying a visit to Washington Irving’s home, Sunnyside . You can also tour the beautiful grounds at the Gothic-revival Lyndhurst mansion. Both properties are exemplary pillars of 19 th and 20 th century architecture. Top it off with a nice dinner at popular eateries such as Sweet Grass Grill or Bistro 12 .

memorial day weekend getaways nyc nantucket ma

13. Nantucket, MA

  • Distance from NYC: 6 hours
  • Why We Recommend It: lots of beaches, nautical town, seafood
  • Where to Stay: Charming Miacomet Home (from $850/night, sleeps 8); Nashaquisset Home (from $445/night, sleeps 6); Sunny Nantucket Apartment (from $74/night, sleeps 4)

It may not be officially summer yet, but the beautiful beaches, towering lighthouses and dreamlike harbors of Nantucket will have you rocking your short shorts and T-shirts in no time. Check out larger than life exhibitions at the renowned Whaling Museum , take a load off at Madaket Beach (or Jetties or Surfside ) or go for a hearty lunch offset by some booze courtesy of Cisco Brewers . Hey, you’re on vacation, right?

memorial day weekend getaways nyc saranac lake ny

14. Saranac Lake, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 5 hours and 30 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: serene getaway, relaxing, nature walks
  • Where to Stay: Adirondack Lakefront Paradise (from $417/night, sleeps 8); The Landing (from $160/night, sleeps 4); Saranac Lake Historic Home (from $528/night, sleeps 12)

If you’re looking for a quiet Memorial Day Weekend getaway that allows you to disconnect and become one with nature, then Saranac Lake is the ideal destination. Nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, this small village was once used as a hideaway by the likes of Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stevenson. Saranac Lake offers you the opportunity to detach from the outside world and truly unwind. Our recommended itinerary consists of coffee shop hopping ( Blue Moon Cafe , Nori’s Village Market and Origin Coffee Co . are great places to start) and a romantic stroll along the eponymous lake. You can also hike Baker Mountain or go river walking. Don't leave town without checking out the local arts scene, which includes the Adirondack’s only year-round professional theater, Pendragon Theatre , and art galleries galore.

memorial day weekend getaways nyc: the poconos PA

15. The Poconos, PA

  • Distance from NYC: 2 hours and 30 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: charming small-town ambience, outdoor activities for all ages, affordable
  • Where to Stay: Lakefront Pocono House (from $375/night, sleeps 10); The Hummingbird Cabin (from $288/night, sleeps 6); Saw Creek Estate (from $186/night, sleeps 9)

Plus, it’s less than a three-hour drive from the city. The charming small-town vibe provides a beautiful backdrop for hiking, whitewater rafting , suntanning on one of the many beaches and taking a scenic historic trolley tour of the region. Foodies will appreciate pit stops at Hanna’s Farm Market , a family-owned roadside stand with locally-sourced food and produce. Additionally, the Poconos is home to Moka Origins Roastery and Chocolate Factory , which is a siren song to chocoholics and caffeine addicts. Don’t leave the area without touring the Castle Inn at the Delaware Water Gap. A guided tour will take you through the building's interesting history as a Victorian resort, boxers’ training ground and music headquarters under Big Band leader Fred Waring.

memorial day weekend getaways nyc: rockaway beach queens, new york

16. Rockaway Beach, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 1 hour
  • Why We Recommend It: accessible by subway, can go in for the day, free beach access
  • Where to Stay: The Rockaway Hotel (from $357/night); Five Towns Inn (from $356/night); Seaside Nest (from $199/night, sleeps 3)

If you’re searching for Memorial Day Weekend getaways from NYC but don’t want to pay holiday weekend pricing, we suggest Rockaway Beach in Queens. It’s a popular summer spot accessible by subway, so you can easily come in for the day. Plus, beach access is free. Before setting up camp and staking your beach umbrella in the sand, grab a box of danishes and sandwiches from Rockaway Beach Bakery . When you arrive at the beach, there are several entrances: 67 th street has the best waves, while 90 th to 98 th streets are lined with restaurants. ( Rippers , a seasonal, open-air bar with live music, is a must.) Those with kiddos or lots of gear are best off entering at 105 th to 116 th streets, a calmer stretch with a paid parking lot by 116 th . For the food, wine and art connoisseurs, this is one of the ultimate Memorial Day Weekend getaways from NYC. A perfect day trip includes coffee at the beloved, local-owned Aldo’s Coffee Company , and a slice of focaccia at Salumeria Sarto .
