A Personalised Tour Experience

We get happy from offering a fun, personal experience. And as the first founded bike tour company in Amsterdam, we have a rich history and deep connection to the city.

Located on the oldest inhabited square in Amsterdam, in a monumental building, we blend historical charm with a passion for storytelling. Even our yellow bikes are a bit cult among locals , many of which grew up with our bikes as a part of the streets.

Yellow Bike Guide

Commitment to Sustainability and Community

Each year, we’re expanding and renewing our tour offerings to highlight more than just the traditional sights. Our new tours focus on the social aspects of the city, promoting inclusivity and sustainability.

We aim to contribute to a more liveable city , both for residents and visitors. By collaborating with Amsterdam & Partners, organising small-scale neighbourhood events, and working with local artists , we support the local community. On Friday evenings, we host a free bike repair club where fellow bike enthusiasts can learn basic bike repairs with guidance from our staff and tools from our workshop. And obviously, we follow sustainable practices such as charging e-bikes with locally produced green energy .

A Mission to Make a Difference

Our newest bike tours are designed to spread visitors across the city, reducing congestion and showcasing as well the diverse neighborhoods other than the historical city centre. We include stories of diversity and sustainability, encouraging visitors to travel in a way that positively impacts the city .

If you’re passionate about these values too, we recommend to book a guided bike tour through North Amsterdam or the Countryside Bike Tour , and join this positive adventure with us.

Join us at Yellow Bike and see why we’re not just another tour company. Discover the true essence of Amsterdam with us!

…who’s excited to show you beautiful Amsterdam. They know better than anyone how to lead a diverse group of bikers – from young to old and from inexperienced to experienced – through the city in an enjoyable way. A-Bike’s tours are also suitable for cyclists of all levels, and all of our guides speak English. Would you like a tour in another language? Just let us know ahead of time.

A custom-made bike…

…of the highest quality. The bikes at A-Bike are continuously maintained and always kept in perfect shape. The height of the handlebars and the seat are adjustable to your height so that you can sit comfortably. The bikes are also extra safe thanks to the reflectors, bike lights and of course a good, loud bell on the handlebar.

An original, informative and enjoyable tour…

… Whether it’s your first or your fifth time in Amsterdam, within our wide array of bike tours, you’ll definitely find something right for you. With our tours you’ll see not only the historic city center, but also unique places in other parts of the city. You’ll also have the choice of bike tours focused on a single theme, such as Amsterdam’s old windmills or the city’s Jewish history.

The advantages of a bike tour

Why do all those narrow canal houses in Amsterdam have a hoisting beam on top? How deep are the canals? And how was life in the Red Light District in the 17th century? Just a few questions that might come to mind when you’re biking through Amsterdam. The big advantage of a guided cycling tour is that you can get answers to all these questions. A bicycle tour is informative and entertaining, and since you’re with a guide, you’ll be biking extra safely through the city. This means that during the tour you’ll have all the time you need to look around and enjoy the sights.

Difficulty level

On this 4 hour gentle cycle trip we cover about 30 kilometers (18.5 miles). Since our country is as flat as a pancake, most people would consider our countryside tour a leisurely bike ride. Please note though that this tour still requiers a moderate fitness level and equal cycling skills. 30 km is a fair distance. Please be aware of this. Badcuyp Amsterdam: The restaurant with the largest wine list in De Pijp

Badcuyp Amsterdam follows Escobar’s footsteps – a charming spot in the heart of De Pijp . This establishment is your go-to for excellent wine, an extensive selection of drinks, dinner, or all of the above. Let’s head to De Pijp, shall we?

Why you want to visit Badcuyp ASAP

The owners of Badcuyp aren’t newbies in the hospitality scene: they’ve previously honed their craft at Flore, Rijsel, Bar du Champagne, Helling7, Panache, and Secret Garden. Together, they bring ample experience to realize De Pijp’s latest sensation. In a short span, their new venture has blossomed into a cosy spot for a leisurely dinner, quick bite, drinks, or a good glass of wine.

The name Badcuyp pays homage to the jazz café that once graced this location, following its tenure as a communal bathing spot for the original residents of De Pijp . While the neighbourhood has undergone significant gentrification and communal baths are now a thing of the past, the historical nod remains charming.

Menu Badcuyp

At Badcuyp Amsterdam, they proudly boast a selection of over 250 (!) wines on their menu – and rightfully so. Naturally, these wines are complemented by delectable bites. The menu features an array of small dishes, but fear not; plenty can satisfy a hearty appetite. Many rave about the morel mushrooms with rabbit and the eggplant with Dutch wasabi – a flavour sensation unlike any other; trust us on this. Seafood takes centre stage on their menu; all their fish, shellfish, and crustaceans are locally and sustainably sourced. Their meats, game, and poultry are equally meticulously chosen, all hailing from their homeland. The dishes are simple yet superb, devoid of unnecessary frills. “This is how we remain true to our goal of cooking no-nonsense, wood-fired cuisine,” the owners affirm.

A Visitor’s Guide to the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

Last Updated: June 11, 2024

Amsterdam has more museums per capita than any other city in the world. We understand that if you’re only here for a short time, it can be hard to decide which to visit.

That said, the Van Gogh Museum is pretty much non-negotiable. Vincent Van Gogh’s iconic “Sunflowers” painting, reprinted on posters, mugs, and tote bags the world over, has to be seen up close and personal to be believed, in all its vibrant, sun-drenched glory.

But of course, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is about a lot more than sunflowers. The museum’s permanent collection spans the troubled artist’s career, while a series of temporary exhibitions offer something new every time you visit.

Not to mention the building itself, which is a work of art in its own right. If the sheer breadth of four floors spread over two wings seems overwhelming, fear not. We’re here to break it down for you.

Famous Sunflowers painting with person looking at it.

Table of Contents

The permanent collection

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is home to the world’s largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings, drawings, and letters. In the museum’s permanent exhibition located in the main building, you’ll come face to face with iconic masterpieces like “Sunflowers,” “Almond Blossom,” “The Bedroom,” “The Potato Eaters,” and of course Van Gogh’s self-portraits.

The museum doesn’t just focus on his paintings, however. It also highlights his drawings and letters – on the second floor in particular. What’s more, the permanent exhibition showcases the significant influence Van Gogh had on the first generation of artists after his death, through works by painters like Maurice de Vlaminck and Kees van Dongen.

Whatever the medium, the artworks uncover the sheer profundity of ideas and ambitions driving Van Gogh’s art, depicting themes we can all recognize, like hope, love, anxiety, and suffering. Key aspects of his art, like his ambition to depict farmers, his exploration of color, and his personal interpretation of nature, are prominently featured and studied across these various themes.

As you explore the museum, you’ll gain a fresh perspective on an artist we’re all familiar with. And you’ll experience both his constant pursuit of self-improvement and his intense experience of life and the world.

Van Gogh Museum

The temporary exhibitions

In the more modern wing of the building, you’ll find the Van Gogh Museum’s temporary exhibitions. There are new exhibitions opening every few months. So, even if you’ve been to the museum before, there’s likely to be something new to see. The temporary exhibitions generally explore the artistic inspiration or personal connection between Van Gogh and one or more other artists.

Past exhibitions have comprised a breathtaking retrospective of the nature paintings of David Hockney and Vincent van Gogh – demonstrating just how much they had in common when it came to the use of color in their landscapes. And an exhibition on how Austrian artist Gustav Klimt , famous for his bold use of gold, was inspired by the work of Van Gogh, Rodin, Monet, Matisse, and many other artists.

Planning your visit

Located on Museumplein, the Van Gogh Museum is easily accessible on foot, by bike or via public transport. Driving is possible, but we wouldn’t recommend it anywhere in central Amsterdam!

The museum is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., including on national holidays. At certain times of the year, it’s open for an extra hour until 6 p.m., and on Fridays it’s often open until later. We recommend that you confirm the opening hours of the Van Gogh Museum , Amsterdam, before your visit.

There is, without fail, a line outside the entrance to the museum. You definitely should buy your tickets well in advance, as all admissions are for a specific time slot. No tickets available when you are in the city? There are often cancellations and no-shows, so it’s worth turning up and trying your luck on the door, just in case.

A great option is to book our Complete Van Gogh Museum Tour with Reserved Entry . This will guarantee you access to the museum. It’ll also help you make the most of your visit thanks to an insightful art history expert. You’ll be able to learn everything you ever wanted to know about Vincent Van Gogh’s life including, yes, the real story of why — and how — Van Gogh cut his own ear off.

Pro tip : if you love art and culture and are going to be in Amsterdam for a longer time invest in a Museumjaarkaart (annual museum card) or a Stadspas (city card) for free entrance not only to the Van Gogh museum but to galleries and museums all over Amsterdam and beyond.

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

Guided tours

The Van Gogh Museum itself offers pre-recorded audio tours (in multiple languages) to enhance your understanding of the works on display.

However, to make the most of your visit, you might prefer to book a guided tour with a local art historian. During our in-depth Van Gogh Museum tour , you won’t just see Van Gogh’s masterpieces, you’ll also take a glimpse into the life and mind of the troubled artist himself. And better still, you’ll get to skip the line and explore the Van Gogh Museum just as the crowds are leaving.

Van Gogh’s hope that his art would continue to inspire the world has undeniably come true, reaching millions of fans to this day. And Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum is undoubtedly the best place to admire his work first-hand. So, what are you waiting for? Take a walk with us.

The Best Walking Tours in Amsterdam

One of the many historic canals in Amsterdam surrounded by flowers

Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities in the world. I’ve been visiting it regularly for over a decade and even spent some time living there. It’s a city with a misunderstood reputation, often glossed over as simply a place to party and partake in the illicit Red Light District.

But Amsterdam has so much more to offer.

If you want to explore the city, there are really only two ways to get around: biking and walking. And fortunately, for those who like to walk (and/or bike) the Dutch capital offers a legion of picturesque strolls: along leafy canals, past centuries-old churches and cozy canal houses, and down narrow cobblestoned lanes.

To really get a glimpse below the city’s surface, take a walking tour. I take them in every city I visit. They’re the best way to learn about the history and culture while connecting with an expert local guide who can share their tips and insight.

Amsterdam, unsurprisingly, offers an array of unique tours: from sex worker-led tours through the famed Red Light District to tours that explore the city’s recreational drug culture to strolls that focus on the history of the city.

To help you decide which ones to take, here’s my list of the best walking tours in Amsterdam!

BEST PAID TOUR

Take Walks logo

Take Walks is my go-to tour company. Their tours are fun, detailed, and use expert local guides so you always learn ton. They also get you behind the scenes with special access to attractions that other tours just can’t get (they have an early-access tour to the Rijksmuseum so you can beat the crowds). If you want to really learn about the city and connect with a knowledgable guide, this is the company for you! I love their tours the best.

Best Free Tour

new Europe logo

Sandemans New Europe

Sandemans does free tours in many big European cities and they know what they’re doing. With a local guide leading the way, their three-hour walking tour hits all the major sites in Amsterdam. Start at the National Monument and end at the Anne Frank House and in between stroll along canals while stopping in the Jewish Quarter, various churches, bridges, and canal-side houses along the way.

For more suggestions, here’s a few other walking tours worth checking out in Amsterdam:

1. Amsterbike

This tour with AmsterBike a perfect way to connect with the local pace of life. AmsterBike offers a few different types of tours, including a cycling tour around the canals and tours out into the countryside.

For their Amsterdam city tour, spend three hours pedaling along canals and down narrow atmospheric streets of this loveable city, learning the history of the place as you go along while stopping at some of the city’s most iconic spots.

Tours from 34.50 EUR.

Book your tour here!

2. Free Food Tour Amsterdam

Dutch gouda cheese, scrumptiously sweet and gooey stroopwafels, deep-fried savory bitterballen, and fresh herring are all on offer during this free two-hour walking tour that explores the food of Amsterdam. The expert local guides give a nice overview of the history and culture of Dutch cuisine while you nibble on samples of traditional foods. And yes – you really do get free food on the tour (just be aware that these are tasting bites, don’t expect to get full here). Just tips the guide at the end.

3. Hungry Birds

For nearly a decade this female-owned tour company has been feeding hungry visitors with knowledge and food of Amsterdam. “Mother birds,” as they refer to their guides, lead food-loving visitors around this charming Dutch metropolis for 4.5 hours, snacking on all manner of edible Dutch delights. Tour-goers get the chance to sample street food, traditional Dutch fare including herring and stroopwafels, some non-Dutch treats like Surinamese and Indonesian cuisine, as well as food at an old-school atmospheric food market.

Tours from 79 EUR.

4. HistoryWalks

Despite the country’s neutrality during World War II, the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in 1939 shortly after the war broke out. Led by a retired history professor, their “World War II and the Holocaust in Amsterdam” tour takes visitors on a whirlwind around the city viewing it through the lens of World War II. It’s a fascinating three hours and the guides really know their stuff. If you’re a history buff like me — or if you just want to learn more about the war from a Dutch perspective — this is the tour for you.

Tours from 40 EUR.

5. Ultimate Party Amsterdam

These wild, party-themed pub crawl tours are festive and fun. Hop on the Red Light District pub crawl where the tour begins with unlimited vodka shots for the first 30 minutes (and then at every stop you get another free shot of booze). The tour concludes with free entry into Amsterdam’s biggest nightclub. This tour isn’t all just about getting drunk (though that’s a big part of it) but is a good way to discover some cool party spots so you can come back later and explore more on your own. It’s a great way to meet people too if you’re traveling solo.

Tours from 25 EUR.

6. Eating Europe

Started in Italy a decade ago, Eating Europe now has tours in many big European cities, including Amsterdam. The local guides know how to eat — and where! The food tour through the hip neighborhood of Jordaan gives a great taste of the amazing food scene there. The 3.5-hour walking tour hits some of the coolest spots in the neighborhood, plus street food and food markets to sample traditional and creative takes on Dutch food as well as some great international food. The knowledgeable guides also give a great account of the history of Dutch cuisine and the history and culture of feasting in Amsterdam.

Tours from 94 EUR.

7. O My Amsterdam Tours

Amsterdam is famous for its tolerance of recreational drug culture, particularly marijuana. In certain cafes, it’s totally fine to light up a joint and get higher than a kite. This 2.5-hour tour takes a bong-sized hit of drug culture and history in Amsterdam, leading curious visitors to cannabis grow rooms and the marijuana museum, among other spots, all the while explaining drug culture here. The guide even explains the difference between bad weed and good weed. It’s a real trip!

8. Prostitute Information Center Tours

The Prostitute Information Center, or PIC, in Amsterdam aims to dispel some myths and misconceptions about prostitution, in general, and in Amsterdam, in particular. Every Wednesday to Saturday at 5pm, a current or former sex worker leads tours around the Red Light District, explaining the practices of the trade and taking tour-goers into an actual room where prostitutes entertain customers. A guest room at De Durgerdam

Amsterdam has been in the news lately as it fights against the wrong kind of tourism . But it’s still one of Europe’s loveliest cities, and quite rightly, people will always want to visit. The historic center is booming, with all the good and bad that brings. Which makes staying away from it appealing.

The lakeside De Durgerdam offers a compromise that doesn’t feel like one. The beautifully outfitted hotel opened last year in the outlying village of the same name. It’s technically part of Amsterdam but quiet, with a single-lane road and a quaint little church. The city’s buildings seem distant on the opposite shore. Down the road, a farm shop works on the honor system, and villages maintain the sort of picture-perfect tidiness that the Dutch hinterland is known for.

It’s bucolic as all get-out, a slow-living haven. Yet it’s just 30 minutes by bicycle—Amsterdammers’ preferred unit of measure—from the city center. (Taxis and ride shares also work.) And the 14-room hotel has a design sensibility, attention to detail, friendly service and yummy food that make it a destination in its own right.

De Durgerdam is the first hotel managed by Aedes, a Dutch real estate and hospitality group specializing in “places with heart and soul that have a positive impact.” They’ve developed well-regarded projects such as Soho House Amsterdam and the city’s Andaz and Hyatt Regency hotels. De Durgerdam is the first hotel they’re running themselves, and it’s the first Aedes property to wave the brand’s flag.

“In the past 15 years, Aedes has invested in and developed heritage buildings for leading names in hospitality,” says founder Paul Geertman. “It has allowed me to think about how to make a difference, how we can bring our expertise in development along with an ethos focused on creating buildings that last…. We want to create spaces which are timeless and sustainable…. In a way, you can say we have been cheering on the bleachers for a long time, but would now like to step on the football field and play ourselves.”

The new hotel is a case in point. “With De Durgerdam, we have seen it is possible to work with complex, historical foundations and allow them to continue to function with a reduced environmental impact,” he says. “We don’t want to compromise on that or quality.”

The hotel’s restaurant and best rooms occupy a heritage-protected building that has functioned as an inn since the 17th century and was most recently a restaurant. (Most of the rooms are in a newer building surrounded by gardens in the back.) Historically, Durgerdam was a fishing village that was open to the North Sea, but when the bay was dammed off and turned into a freshwater lake, they lost their livelihood. After a careful, years-long restoration, the hotel pays homage to that history.

Patina abounds. A school of miniature jeweled fish floats across a corner of the restaurant, De Mark. A pair of weathered wood mermaids hang above a service staging area. A net is suspended over the center of the dining room, woven with glass drops that represent the fishermen’s tears over losing their livelihood.

Robin’s-egg blue raincoats hang in the room as functional decoration. Weathered wood is everywhere. Peeling paint and snippets of wallpaper tell stories. Gorgeous custom tulip-wood headboards resemble the contours of the lake. The original 17 th -century staircase is intact, complete with a small sign warning that 400 years of use have made the steps tilted and slippery.

Details from the bathroom in a guest suite

“It’s important that the designers are material researchers,” says marketing and communications manager Monica Hanlo, referring to the Dutch design agency Buro Belén , for whom De Durgerdam was the first hotel interior project. “There’s a focus on details, on making things that are tangible. They also looked at the relationship between light and color.”

And they’ve nailed their use of both. The rooms have subtle, natural tones, mostly an earthy sage green and a redbrick inspired by traditional sailcloth tanning. The lighting throughout, whether from the sun or the LED lighting, is something straight out of a Vermeer.

Speaking of art, there are works from old masters as well as contemporary artists from across the Netherlands, all inspired by the place, the water and its history. “Art is a personal passion, and I like knowing that guests will be able to enjoy it too,” says Geertman. “The same goes for the selection of books. We have put a lot of time in selecting and curating everything. Nothing is placed without a reason.”

That goes for what’s on the plate as well, as De Mark is the sort of place that’s meant to lure city dwellers with its casual approach to fine dining. The restaurant was conceived in collaboration with chefs Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot of the city’s Michelin two-star Restaurant 212 . Their ideas, executed by head chef Koen Marees, lean toward modern comfort food that highlights local products.

Obviously, the menu changes often, but dishes include the likes of mushroom paté with coffee powder, roasted cod with buttermilk and cream of roasted celeriac, and spring chicken roasted with mustard and tarragon with herb salad from the garden. But perhaps the standout is the tomato steak tartare, a vegan dish that takes hours of roasting, dehydrating and other preparation to turn the fruit into something meaty, flavorful and deeply satisfying.

A dish at De Mark

Delectable as it is, it’s something that slightly flummoxes Aedes’s head of sustainability, Esther Mouwen. It takes eight or nine tomatoes to make one umami-rich serving, with a lot of seeds and stems left over. Although they go into the compost with everything else, she’s exploring other options.

She can do things like this because being small lets Aedes go all-in on sustainability, quickly implementing ideas that brands like Soho House and Hyatt—as well intentioned as they may be—can’t do with any real speed. One of her biggest wins so far has been creating De Durgerdam as an entirely gas-free hotel—a rarity in the Netherlands, especially in a historic building—with a heat pump to keep things cozy and a wood-burning cooking fire to keep chefs (and diners) happy.

“We have four main themes, which aren’t shocking but important,” says Mouwen: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving biodiversity, circularity and people, including employees, neighbors and surrounding communities. She has a lot to say about stakeholder pledges, professional development, biodiversity benchmarking and measurement, and hydraloops to manage water responsibly.

The ”people” pillar feels especially relevant, given Europe’s current love-hate relationship with tourism. De Durgerdam gets this right too, encouraging guests to get around by bike, keeping the music down, communicating about potentially disruptive deliveries and incorporating the neighbors into the hospitality—the firewater that’s offered in guests’ rooms is made by one elderly villager, and another rents out her beautiful old boat for day trips on the lake.

And it’s showing that there’s more to Amsterdam than its crowded center. “The UK is known for its country house hotels, but the Netherlands doesn’t have that culture,” says Hanlo. “People don’t expect quality outside the city center. But now people are realizing this is something we didn’t have before.”
