Anakonda Amazon River Cruise Ship

Anakonda Deals

Amazon Squirrel Monkey

The luxurious Anakonda lauded as South America’s leading boutique cruise at the World Travel Awards, takes up to 36 passengers deep into the upper basins of the Napo and Aguarico Rivers, around the mega-diverse Pañacocha biological corridor and Yasuni National Park biosphere reserve – Ecuador’s largest protected animal reserve – for unprecedented wildlife watching opportunities and authentic cultural encounters.

Refined Relaxation

Guests of the Anakonda get to relax even before boarding the vessel, in a purpose-built, private VIP lounge at the pier in Coca, where complimentary refreshments are available. Once you step foot on board, you’ll find more luxurious touches, with the vessel featuring an expansive sun deck complete with lazy chairs and a refreshing warm outdoor Jacuzzi, and a fabulous al fresco shaded lounge on the third deck, ideal for exotic cocktails, relaxation, or simply enjoying the spectacular rainforest views.

The neighboring indoor lounge-cum-conference room invitingly welcomes the weary and those thirsty for alcohol and knowledge with its panoramic views, plush sofas, fascinating expert-led lectures and well-stocked El Dorado Bar. Those seeking a quite corner for reading or some exclusive souvenirs should head to the bow of the second deck to find a reclusive reading room and boutique.

You may be forgiven for thinking you are in a 5-star hotel as you fuel your expedition with gourmet food, prepared by internationally trained chefs, in the first deck’s spacious restaurant, and reminisce about your rainforest discoveries at the end of each day in well-appointed, sizeable suites, especially the Deluxe Suites which feature jacuzzi baths and private balconies.

Special Excursions

Whether you choose to do the four-, five- or combined eight-day cruise, the Ecuadorian Amazon has some special experiences to share. Marvel at a kaleidoscopic gathering of macaws and parrots as they get their daily detox at a hidden clay lick. Try your hand at intrepidly kayaking through the tributaries of the Amazon, or on the longer itineraries, why not spend a glamping night in the jungle (for an additional cost) for a once-in-a-lifetime stay under spectacular starry skies, surrounded by the sounds and spirits of the jungle.

Embrace the ancestral culture of the local indigenous communities who live in this remote realm, as they warmly welcome you into their homes or village centers and impart their family recipes as they teach you how to make traditional Amazonian dishes. At every turn you will be accompanied by expert naturalist guides, many of whom are local to the region, to enrich your understanding of the ecosystems and wildlife around you, and the vessel’s special travel concierge will go out of their way to give you a personalized cruise experience.

As well as the delicious cuisine on board, foodies and chocoholics will also be excited to learn that onboard chocolate tastings with the finest Ecuadorian chocolate can be arranged with anticipation, and during excursions it is also possible to savor the rainforest’s natural flavor offerings, from the cocoa fruit in its pure and natural state, to the much-coveted cinnamon bark which Francisco de Orellana himself set off in search of when looking for the “land of cinnamon”, and ultimately resulted in the discovery of the Amazon River.

Participate In Conservation Projects

The habitat of the incredible wildlife that call the Amazon their home is threatened by many invasive industries such as logging, oil, poachers and others whose actions and constant exploitation have endangered many species almost to the point of extinction. To counter this, the Anakonda’s pioneering and passionately philanthropic owners – co-founders of Ecuador’s Ecotourism Society – have started 3 conservation projects which lucky passengers have the privilege of directly participating in.

At certain times of the year you may be lucky enough to release a yellow-spotted sideneck turtle hatchling into the wild at the charapas breeding project, aimed at repopulating the region’s riverbanks with these rare, vulnerable-listed reptiles. Guests can also learn about the plight of the critically endangered Amazonian manatee at the newly created Manatee Research Center and witness and participate in the care and rehabilitation of rescued manatees before their release.

As part of longer itineraries you may also get the chance to feed the remarkable pink Amazon River Dolphin in the wild in Cocaya, near a new research station close to the Peruvian border that facilitates the monitoring and observation of this unique species.

Named after the anaconda, the infamous gargantuan serpent that Hollywood has managed to misrepresent in many a movie, the Anakonda is in reality, like its namesake snake, a graceful, beautiful, almost spiritual vessel to behold as she winds through the depths of the Amazon rainforest. As has the anaconda been an inspiration for indigenous art, symbolizing Mother Nature’s gifts to our planet, these award-winning Anakonda Amazon cruises are an equally artistic and generous offering, with this boutique boat’s contemporary curves and adventurous itineraries giving you the opportunity to uncover the innermost secrets of the Ecuadorian Amazon in style.

Itineraries & Prices

Embarkation

PM:  Our adventure begins in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. After a 30-minute flight from Quito to the Amazonian city of Coca, we will transfer to the dock and board our motorized canoe for a 90-minute journey down the river, taking in the beauty of the Amazon, until we reach the Anakonda Amazon Explorer and receive our warm welcome aboard.

On the Anakonda, we will be joined by expert local naturalist guides, who will provide us with a brief, informative introduction to the Ecuadorian Amazon; and afterward, guests will have the opportunity to explore our cruise ship and admire the rainforest landscape as we glide down the Napo River. After a delicious dinner, we will take a nighttime forest walk to hear the sounds of the rainforest and observe the nocturnal wildlife.

Anakonda Amazon's 4-Day Itinerary Day One - Skiff Ride.

Pañacocha Biological Corridor & The Mythical Piranha Lagoon

AM : We will travel downstream to the Pañayacu River delta, where we will embark on a canoe trip to Pañacocha Lake (“Piranha Lagoon” in the native Kichwa language), an ecosystem flooded by blackwater river water. The surrounding protected rainforest is home to primates and birds and is the perfect habitat for piranhas, the PaĂche or pirarucu (one of the world’s largest freshwater fish), the white caiman, and hundreds of other aquatic animals. The surrounding protected rainforest is home to primates and various bird species, which we will be able to spot during a walk with our guides.

PM : We will then recharge our energy with an Amazon-style barbeque at a community camp, and after a short rest, we will take part in aquatic activities such as kayaking and/or swimming. Back onboard the Anakonda, we will build on what we learned with an interesting talk about the region given by our guides.

Anakonda Amazon's 4-Day Itinerary Day Two - River Views.

Parrot Clay Licks & Amazonian Communities

AM : We will set out on our motorized canoes early in the morning to witness one of the most incredible sights on this side of the Western Amazon - the famous parrot clay licks. This unique place is rich in minerals and attracts hundreds of colorful parrots, parakeets, and Amazon birds who meet up here to lick the clay which provides a healthy boost to their digestion.

PM : In the afternoon we will visit the Kichwa women’s community project, where we will learn about the indigenous lifestyle along the Napo river, their ancestral culture, and their community, and will have the opportunity to support them by purchasing handicrafts, local products, and souvenirs, as well as the opportunity to participate in the Charapas Turtle Conservation that we support together with the community.

Anakonda Amazon's 4-Day Itinerary Day Three - Parrot Clay Lick.

anaconda river cruise

PM: Following a quick 30-minute flight from Quito, we will land in the Amazonian town of Francisco de Orellana (more commonly called “Coca”). Once there, we will drive to the river’s dock to board a motorized canoe that will take us downriver for about an hour, all the time admiring the rainforest landscape and banks of the majestic Napo River. We will then board the Anakonda Amazon Cruise motor vessel (M/V). Once everyone is on board the Anakonda, we continue sailing downriver. This is when passengers will be able to appreciate the host of features offered by this Amazonian riverboat. In addition to its roomy social areas and comfortable cabins, the ship possesses an observation deck for amazing views of the Amazon rainforest. This evening, we will go on a nocturnal jungle walk, which will give you your first chance to experience the sounds and sights of the completely different world of the Amazon by night. Sparkling fireflies and phosphorescent eyes will undoubtedly astonish you in this magical birthplace of life. Led by your guide, searching for nocturnal animals can be an unforgettable experience.

AM: Today we will continue sailing downriver until reaching the Pañayacu Biological Corridor, a sprawling primary forest that includes flooded and terra firma forest. Once there, we will travel by motorized canoe up another river to take in the sights of this amazing nature reserve. We will all keep our eyes out for the legendary Pink river dolphins, common Squirrel monkeys and a host of other animals. However, since Pañacocha (meaning “Piranha Lake” in Kichwa) is an ecosystem flooded by white waters, the lakes and rivers here are also perfect for aquatic life such as the notorious piranha, as well as the White caiman and the Water monkey fish (“Arawana”). In the afternoon, the more daring members of the group can go for a cool, energizing swim in those same waters. Later, everyone will assemble at a nearby camping site to savor a rich Amazonian-style BBQ and ice-cold drinks. Reinvigorated by our break, we will then strike out along trails deep into the rainforest, returning to the ship that evening for a well-deserved dinner.

AM: Following breakfast on board the Anakonda, we will head out to witness an astonishing natural phenomenon of the western Amazon basin. Groups of colorful parrots descend from the air to ingest the clay on some riverbanks almost every day. These sites, called “clay licks,” are unforgettable. Hiding behind a bird blind, you will have a chance (weather permitting) to view up to hundreds of parrots and parakeets attracted to the toxin-reducing sodium-rich clay. Our next activity will take us to the Sani Warmi Kichwa Interpretation Center, which showcases the arts, crafts, customs, traditions and everyday life of the local indigenous Kichwa community. After lunch, we will also stop at the Yakukawsay Kichwa Interpretation Center, where you will have a chance to buy handcrafted souvenirs and other locally produced goods. Following dinner on board the Anakonda, we should be able to go on a fascinating evening walk in Yasuni National Reserve, depending on the weather. Nighttime is the prime time for feeding in the jungle; so as soon as the sun begins to set, numerous creatures emerge that can’t be seen during the day. At some point on the walk, we will ask you to turn off your flashlight and stay quiet to let your senses adapt to the darkness, listening to the symphony of rainforest sounds. This is when you’ll truly be able to appreciate the vastness of the Amazon jungle and its countless secrets.

AM: Passengers will disembark the M/V Anakonda this morning to board a motorized canoe that will take us back to Coca (a one-hour ride), where you will catch your return flight to Quito.

AM: After breakfast, we will disembark for our first daytime rainforest experience. Venturing along untamed trails, we will go on a three-hour hike that winds past towering trees, across streams and takes us beneath the primary canopy – while all the time observing the particularly abundant bird life in this region. You are sure to spot many of the 600 species of birds here, which include raptors, terns, macaws, parrots and toucans, though particular sightings depend on the weather and river level. Following lunch back on board the ship, the M/V Anakonda will cruise downriver to one of the Ecuadorian Amazon’s most untouched and seldom explored regions. Since the best way to visit this flooded ecosystem is by canoe, we will begin paddling along blackwater lagoons and rivers to discover the pristine beauty of this lush rainforest world. Here, you will certainly find the eerier eyes of Black caiman poking up out of the water as we also search for anaconda and the legendary Pink river dolphin. It’s likely that we will also come across various species of monkeys, all kinds of frogs and river turtles, as well as the primitive Hoatzin, a bird known locally as the “Stinky Turkey.”

AM: After another delicious breakfast on board the Anakonda, you will have a chance to interact with local children when we visit a village school. Meeting with the kids and teachers, you will have an opportunity to learn about the educational system and the way of life of remote Ecuador communities situated along the banks of the Napo River. Later, after making our way back to the M/V Anakonda for lunch, we will all appreciate a midday break as we cruise further downriver. On the ship, you will have a chance to participate in a presentation about the Amazon and view a documentary concerning the region. If there’s enough time, you can also learn about the typical handicrafts of the area, as well as try your hand at making some yourself. We will spend the afternoon exploring the exotic plant and animal life on Napo Island, one of the largest islands on river.

AM: As soon as we finish breakfast, we will climb a 100-foot high observation tower supported in part by a giant kapok tree. Reaching such a height will afford you a 360Âș range of vision over the forest canopy. From here, you can easily admire colorful bird species that are almost impossible to see from below, while orchids, bromeliads and wild lichen cover the tree branches all around. This afternoon we will visit the 13,000-acre (53 kmÂČ) Limoncocha Biological Reserve, a fascinating protected area that consists mainly of wetlands. Since this excursion will extend past sunset, we will also pull out our flashlights to do some Black caiman spotting before heading back to the M/V Anakonda for dinner.

AM: In the morning, we will disembark the M/V Anakonda and board a motorized canoe for a one-hour boat ride back to Coca. From there you will catch your return flight to Ecuador’s capital city, Quito.

After a safety briefing, we will head out on this magical river journey. On the alternative canoe trip, you will paddle up and down the mighty Napo River. With either option, you can expect to spot monkeys, colorful tropical birds, river turtles and possibly sloths and other exotic creatures. Your naturalist guide will, of course, accompany you to point out highlights and make fascinating insights into this unique eco-system.

AM: After another delicious breakfast on board the Anakonda, you will have a chance to interact with local children when we visit a school. Meeting with the kids, teachers and parents, you will have an opportunity to learn about the educational systems and the way of life of remote Ecuador communities situated along the banks of the Napo River. We will spend the afternoon exploring the exotic plant and animal life on Napo Island, one of the largest islands on the river.

AM: Today you will have a choice between a kayaking and a canoeing adventure. The kayaking excursion will take you into the Yasuni National Reserve via the Indillama River, a tributary of the Napo. After a safety briefing, we will head out on this magical river journey. On the alternative canoe trip, you will paddle up and down the mighty Napo River itself. With either option, you can expect to spot monkeys, colorful tropical birds, river turtles and possibly sloths and other exotic creatures. Your naturalist guide will, of course, accompany you to point out highlights and make fascinating insights into this unique eco-system.

AM: Today we will continue sailing downriver until reaching the Pañayacu Biological Corridor, a sprawling primary forest that includes flooded and terra firma forest. Once there, we will travel by canoe up another river to take in the sights of this amazing nature reserve. We will all keep our eyes out for the legendary Pink river dolphins, common Squirrel monkeys and a host of other animals. However, since Pañacocha (meaning “Piranha Lake” in Kichwa) is an ecosystem flooded by white waters, the lakes and rivers here are also perfect for the aquatic life such as the notorious Piranha fish, as well as the White caiman and the Water monkey fish (“Arawana”).

Onboard accommodations All meals while on board Unlimited supply of water, coffee and tea Transfers to/from the vessel when arriving on recommended flights Excursions with a certified naturalist guide, as indicated in the itinerary

Our 40 guests aboard the 148 foot-long M/V Anakonda Amazon River Cruise may enjoy a wide variety of wine and fine dining, complete with the all-inclusive comfort of a five-star boutique hotel. Our 18 suites, each with an area over 215 square feet, feature sitting areas, large and comfortable beds, and wall-to-wall panoramic windows. The observation deck with the outdoor Jacuzzi and our al fresco lounge are ideal places to have a cocktail, to relax with a good book or simply enjoy the spectacular view

Day 1 : Sunday: Quito – Coca – Napo River

We have itineraries of 3,4,5,7 and 8 days, depending on your preferences. This is an example itinerary of 8 days

Departure from Quito.  A short 30-minute flight takes us to the frontier town of Coca (Francisco de Orellana) – and transfer to the dock, where we will embark on a motorized canoe and navigate down river about 1 hour, to board the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruise. Throughout the journey we have a chance to admire the rainforest landscape and banks of the great Napo River.

Immediately after boarding the M/V Anakonda, we continue navigating downstream. Passengers will have their first opportunities to enjoy the exciting features of our cruise ship: the spacious social areas, comfortable suites, and an observation deck that offers spectacular views. An evening walk is organized after sunset; it gives us the opportunity to discover the forest’s nocturnal activity and listen to the incessant sounds of nature.

Day 2 : Visiting the Pañacocha Biological Corridor

We will continue our navigation downstream to the Pañayacu River delta; take a canoe trip up the river to experience the sights of this fascinating reserve. We will seek out Pink River Dolphins, Common Squirrel Monkeys and much more. Pañacocha (Piranha Lake, in Quechua) is an ecosystem flooded by white waters. The rivers and lakes here are the perfect habitat for the infamous Piranha, as well as the Water Monkey Fish (Arawana) and White Caiman. After a refreshing swim (for the courageous!), we will enjoy a delicious Amazon-style BBQ meal and refreshing beverages at a nearby camping site. In the afternoon, we will head out on exploration trails, and return onboard for dinner.

Day 3 : Clay licks – Sani Warmi & Yasuní National Park

Breakfast on board. We set out to visit one of the most amazing spectacles this side of western Amazonia known as parrot licks, these unique pools of mud become rich in minerals and attract hundreds of parrots, parakeets and amazons every day. If weather permits, we will have a chance to marvel at this astonishing natural phenomenon.

Later we will visit the Sani Warmi Kichwa Interpretation Center, where a group of Kichwa women will speak of their customs, cuisine and everyday life. They have created the center in order to showcase their culture, and it is a unique opportunity to learn about Amazonian lifestyles along the Napo River. You will also have the opportunity to buy crafts, local products and souvenirs.

After lunch, we will make a stop at the Yakukawsay Kichwa Interpretation Centre, and end with an interesting evening walk through the forest (depending on accessibility, river water levels and weather conditions).

Day 4 : Indillama & Napo Rivers – Yasuní National Park

In this day you have the option to kayak trough one of the afluents of the Napo River that goes into the Yasuni National Park, the Indillama River. Great excursions for wildlife observation, kayaks are a great silent vehicle to flow down river.

Or you can choose to go tin a canoe ride in search of more wildlife through the Napo River. It’s up to you!

Day 5 : Border with Peru (the heart of YasunĂ)

After a delicious breakfast, we disembark on land for our first daylight close-and-personal tropical rainforest experience, where we will learn about the relationship between plants and animals while closely watching out for samples of Amazonia’s fascinating biodiversity at every turn.

After lunch, the M/V Anakonda navigates to one of the most pristine and little explored sections of Ecuadorian Amazonia, home to the legendary pink river dolphin, black caiman and anaconda. We may also find river turtles and various species of monkeys, as well as the primitive Hoatzin, a one-of-a-kind bird locally known as “the Stinky Turkey”. The only way to actually visit this flooded ecosystem is by canoe, a ride that will reveal the beauty of a lush jungle world.

For our more adventurous passengers, please inquire about our glamping program

Day 6 : Meeting the community – activities on board – island exploration

Breakfast on board. We visit a school located on the banks of the Napo River, where we will have the opportunity to interact with children of the area and learn about the educational system of a remote jungle community in Ecuador.

We return on board the M/V Anakonda for lunch and a moment to relax while we navigate upstream.  We will offer a lecture and documentary screening, and if time permits, learn about (and make) typical handicrafts of the area. In the afternoon, we explore one of the largest river islands of the Napo River.

Day 7 : Parrot’s clay lick – Limoncocha biological reserve

Breakfast on board. We set out to visit one of the most amazing spectacles this side of western Amazonia known as parrot licks, these unique pools of mud become rich in minerals and attract hundreds of parrots, parakeets and amazons every day. If weather permits, we will have a chance to marvel at this astonishing natural phenomenon. We will also visit a small community arts and crafts shop, an excellent place to find souvenirs to take back.

In the afternoon, we visit Limoncocha Biological Reserve, a fascinating protected area where more than 478 bird species and several monkey species have been recorded. This activity will extend into the evening, when we will have a chance to spot black caiman with the help of our flashlights. Return to the M/V Anakonda for dinner.

Anakonda Amazon River Cruise

anaconda river cruise

Most Popular Ecuador Trips & Tours

Due to fairly stable seasonal weather conditions in Ecuador, travelers can enjoy year-round travel to the country. Some areas have better weather at certain times of the year, but it is always a good time to travel to Ecuador. Ecuador has a surprising variety of climates. The weather can be very localized and tends to change quickly because of the country’s unique geography. Located on the Equator, Ecuador is divided into four main regions: the Andes, the Amazon, the Coast, and the Galapagos Islands. Within these four regions of this small country, roughly the size of Colorado, elements of all four seasons can occur in a single day. The Andes (Highlands) Visitors can experience the Andean Highlands year-round, though June to September and late November to mid-January tend to be the drier months. February to May and October to mid-November are considered the rainier season. During the rainier months, one will find warm sunny weather in the morning followed by almost daily showers in the afternoon. Temperatures show little variance throughout the year with averages in the 60s during the day and 50s at night, though sunny days may get into the 70s and cooler nights may drop into the 40s. Despite these averages, it is common to have rainy streaks in the dry season and nice sunny weather in the wet season. It is best to come prepared for both rain and sun, as visitors will likely run into both during any month of the year. Warm days and cool nights are normal so packing layers is essential. The Amazon The Amazon basin is what you would expect of a tropical rainforest: wet, hot and humid. January marks the beginning of the less rainy period, which extends through March. Calling this the dry season would be a misnomer as it still rains quite frequently. March through July tends to be rainier than the first two months of the year, with July tending to be the rainiest. August through December is known as the fluctuation season. During this time, it is nearly impossible to predict weather patterns. One minute could be hot and sunny with clear blue skies and then the next minute a heavy downpour could begin. Temperatures year-round range in the 80s (27-33°C) and rain, sometimes even cool rainstorms, can be expected most days in the afternoon, as the Amazon basin is truly a rainforest. Any time of year is great to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon despite the level of rain. Contrary to what one may think, the months with higher averages of rainfall are great times to visit. Higher levels of rain increase fruit production, which results in more activity from monkeys and other fruit eating species. The Amazon is an unpredictable environment from both a weather and wildlife standpoint. The best approach for visitors to have an excellent Amazonian experience is to come prepared for the unexpected and to have an open mind! The Coast On coast, the dry season runs from about June to December with a temperature drop to the high 70s. The garua, a damp mist, has a tendency to cast itself over the coastline and the sun. The sun can disappear for three months at a time. Then in January to June, temperatures go up and despite the occasional heavy rain, the days will be bright and sunny. The Galapagos The great weather of the Galapagos Islands makes them a fantastic destination for travel year-round. Every month of the year is a good time to enjoy a tour of the region. The Galapagos Islands have a subtropical climate that is almost completely determined by sea currents. Although most believe the Galapagos to be a very hot destination, the cool water currents in the area keep the climate fairly temperate year-round. The mild variations in weather from month to month result in an overall climate of warm days, cool nights and low humidity. Anytime is a great time to travel to the Galapagos; while visiting one can expect to see plenty of sunshine, blue skies and a possible chance of light rain.

I have traveled many places in the world but the trip put together by Southern Explorations may well be the best. The amazing biology we saw on the Galapagos and in the Amazon, wonderful guides both on the Eclipse and at Sacha lodge, excellent food, and great coordination of the different parts of the trip made for an incredible journey.   -Marilyn Parsons, USA (Galapagos Island Cruise & Amazon)

We had an outstanding time on our Galapagos Adventure + stay at the Sacha Lodge. Everything ran seamlessly and our guides were fun and knowledgeable. It was the perfect mix of activity, education, and relaxation! We also highly recommend the Sacha Lodge. - Eric & Leah Monson, USA (Galapagos Island Land & Amazon)

Start today off by visiting an authentic Kichwa family on the banks of the Napo River, with the opportunity to learn directly from members of the local community. Board the Anakonda for lunch as she continues upstream. Participate in a cooking class with the expert chef and prepare exquisite traditional Ecuadorian food. Try your hand at traditional handicrafting or enjoy onboard facilities, including the Rainforest Spa, the spectacular view from the Amazon Hot Tub, cocktails at the Bar and Lounge, and stargazing from the Observation Deck.

In the afternoon, visit a canopy tower built against a giant kapok tree and take in the view from the top while looming above the lush treetops that look down on the sheer vastness of the Amazon. In the evening, take a canoe onto the river to search for black caimans by flashlight.

This is where the adventure ends, Enjoy the final part of the return journey, then disembark the Anakonda Amazon Cruise to take the motorized canoe 90 minutes back to Coca.

AMAZING. I’m a vegetarian and the chef made a special effort to make things for me to enjoy every day. Even at the BBQ special grilled vegetables for me...i already recommended this trip to others.

Accommodations Review

The accommodations on the ship were wonderful, we really enjoyed the Wyndham in Quito. Because of their location they could be mediocre and get by but instead it was one of the better non-luxury hotels i have stayed in. The gym is fabulous, the room is clean and spacious, the restaurant is good, the shuttle very helpful and timely, AND they have an afternoon “tea” (actually a local drink) service complete with local treats. We hope to stay there again.

Meals Review

Wonderful food. My only suggestion would be more options for salads but
I am aware that fresh foods on the Amazon might be tricky. Honestly, the food was great and as I mentioned they accommodated my dietary issues very nicely.

Crew & Guides Review

Abel was truly the best tour guide i have ever had. He is my gold standard for new adventures. He showed us everything, while making sure we were all safe and comfortable. My husband is older and our travelling companions had some agility issues - no problem, Abel took that in stride, helping people and making sure that everyone was well taken care of.

Transportation Review

The flights (timing on return is an agony but obviously beyond your control), the airport hotel, the guide at the airport, the pickup/transport in CoCa - ENTIRELY seamless and so easy. We have absolutely never had foreign travel that was this easy. We would do this again and again and we are hoping you have other similar trips to other locations.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

We called Lauren so many times with questions and clarifications. We were actually a bit anxious about this trip and she was kind enough to respond to us each time. We were properly dressed for each adventure and understood the travel plans. In other words it couldn’t have been better. Lauren was so helpful and this was a great trip. Nothing but positive things to say!

Traveler Advice

Travel during the dry season. It did rain one day and that was fairly miserable. MUCH better to go on outings not covered in rain gear and slogging through the mud.

Bring lots of cash for visits to the village and for tips - we truly thought every member of the crew was wonderful and hard working and really took time to take good care of us. We would have left A LOT more gratuity but we didn’t have enough cash to do so.

Anakonda, Ecuador Amazon Cruise Ship

Jump to: Overview | Suites | Common Areas | Anakonda Photos | Anakonda Cruises | Anakonda Deck Plan | Ship Info | REQUEST A QUOTE

The anaconda has long been a sacred symbol to the Amazon’s peoples, due to its unique status as the world’s biggest snake. As the only ship offering luxury cruises in the Ecuadorian rainforest , the Anakonda shares this uniqueness, offering passengers an unequaled experience in the land the indigenous locals call el oriente .

The Anakonda is built to make this experience all-inclusive. From its 18 luxury suites to its commodious common areas, from its al fresco dining area to its travel concierge trained to personalize each passenger’s Amazon adventure, this three-level ship offers everything you’ll need to make your cruise unforgettable. The ship has a maximum capacity of 40 passengers—just the right number for those desiring privacy, as well as those looking to make new friends on their voyage out into the wild heart of the jungle.

In the Anakonda, the Suites are truly a home away from home. Each one features one or two king-sized beds, a panoramic picture window, a modern bathroom with full shower, and limited internet access via satellite. Four Deluxe Suites have private balconies. Here you can relax in air-conditioned comfort as you gaze out at the wildlife and the locals along the river’s edge.

Common Areas

The Anakonda’s public areas equal the luxury of its suites, starting with the food. Here you can opt for comfortable indoor dining in a traditional restaurant, or, if the evening breeze is right, dine al fresco in a romantic setting under the stars. Either way, you’ll be at one with the rainforest around you, as you savor your choice of Ecuadorian or international delicacies.

There are other common areas for those wanting to mingle. The reading room and bar-salon are great places to learn about the exotic plants and animals of Ecuador’s rainforest, while the solarium and observation deck, with their magnificent vistas, allow you to take in the full wonder of the monkeys, toucans, capybaras, and pink dolphins you’ll see around you.

When you need to rest, you can get a massage or raindrop therapy in the Anakonda’s spa, or browse the handicrafts by local artisans for sale in the ship’s boutique. At the day’s end, a dip in the outdoor Jacuzzi will replenish your energies and rejuvenate your soul.

Anakonda Cruise--the best intimate cruise in the Amazon

We took the 4 day amazon cruise on the Anakonda. I believe it has 14 rooms, but when we went in June, there were only us (a family of 5) and another family of 5 with the ship to ourselves. All the rooms are suites and well appointed! The Deluxe suites have about 100 sq ft of space with a bathtub, but the regular suites are just as good since most of the time is spent on excursions or on deck. The crew is OUTSTANDING! Housekeeping: Probably the best there is in the global industry. Every detail is covered. Local flavored chocolates left on our beds every night and a cleaning that seemed like 3x a day. They come in the morning after you eat breakfast and leave on your excursion. Then they come while you are at dinner to turn town and refresh. The ship was impeccably clean. Food: Can you say Michelin star rating? The presentation to the variety of food brought comfort and local flavor insuring nobody left a meal hungry. No ask was too small. The Crew: Lead by Esteban and the Captain, they couldn't have been more professional, accommodating and hospitable. We truly felt like royalty as they attended to our every need and wish! Allen, the bartender, seemed just a few feet away to ask for your favorite adult beverage! The Naturalists: We had Diego for our trip and he was incredible. He was able to find animals that we wouldn't have seen right in front of our faces. His knowledge of the flora and fauna were exceptional. The personal experience having your own naturalist take you through the Amazon is unmatched! 4 days seemed too short! The 7 day cruise may have been better, but we found time to enjoy the Jacuzzi on the top deck enjoying adult beverages and looking at the stars shining from the middle of the earth. 5 stars for the Anakonda and it's crew as they spoil you down the Napo river!

We spent 4 days at Napo Wildlife Center and our high expectations were surpassed! The lodge and dwellings are hand made by a staff carpenter out of local wood, the cook and staff, the native guides, the wait staff are all professional and pleasant. At the end of our trip All the staff, from cleaning staff, to cooks and professional guides were presented and thanked by the manager in front of all the guests. We learned a lot about the amazon and about this hard working Anangu community.

We spent 4 days on this luxury boat - the Anaconda, on the Ecuadorian Napo river, a tributary to the Amazon. My friends and I were thrilled with this experience. I don't see reviews of this boat here. It is a small boat, I think of it as almost a private cruise. The boat hosts 16 guests. There were 9 of us on this trip. And it was an outstanding experience. We first came across the Napo Wildlife Lodge, also a luxury lodge. But our travel agent (And Beyond) offered either the lodge or the cruise. We chose the cruise and we were thrilled. The boat is actually quite large. It is luxury. There are 11 cruise staff all servicing the 9 of us. The food was outstanding. Let me repeat - the food was outstanding. One of my friends was following a vegan diet. The other one was gluten free. The chef flawlessly catered to both of them without exception. They had special meals prepared just for them at lunch and dinner and these meals were prepared with thought and variety. Our guides, two of them, naturalists were excellent. We couldn't be happier. It was a very active cruise. We had an activity in the morning and the afternoon every day. We were on walks, including a night walk, we visited the local communities, the canopy walk, we were on motorized canoes. We fed pink dolphins. We drove to where the Napo river crosses into Peru and meet with another Ecuadorian river; we visited lakes... We really enjoyed the biodiversity of the Napo/Amazon basin. We learned about local communities live off the land. We saw Scarlet Macaws, monkeys, all sorts of other birds and animal life, plants, trees etc. We loved this.

We were on the Anakonda boat and stopped at several places along the Napo River. We really enjoyed it. It's not something you can do in just one day. I recommend the Anakonda!

I stayed at an eco-lodge on the bank of the Napo river. Myself and 30 others were participating in a charity project to build a school in the nearby native population

We spent several days in the Casa del Suizo Hotel (which I cannot seem to find to review) and it was a joy. We traveled to the animal sanctuary across the river, boated to a local indigenous village, and went on a fabulous hike through the rain Forest. This is a place to just sit back and bask in the beauty. Birds, fish, and animals are everywhere. the vegetation is amazing and there is so much to examine and enjoy.

ANAKONDA AMAZON CRUISE 4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS ITINERARY SUNDAY – WEDNESDAY

anaconda river cruise

SUNDAY: QUITO – COCA – NAPO RIVER

Our adventure begins in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. After a 30-minute flight from Quito to the Amazonian city of Coca, we will transfer to the dock and board our motorized canoe for a 90-minute journey down the river, taking in the beauty of the Amazon, until we reach the Anakonda Amazon Cruise and receive our warm welcome aboard. On the Anakonda, we will be joined by expert local naturalist guides, who will provide us with a brief, informative introduction to the Ecuadorian Amazon; and afterwards guests will have the opportunity to explore our cruise ship and admire the rainforest landscape as we glide down the Napo River. After a delicious dinner, we will take a nighttime forest walk to hear the sounds of the rainforest and observe the nocturnal wildlife.

anaconda river cruise

MONDAY: PAÑACOCHA, THE MYTHICAL PIRANHA LAGOON

We will travel downstream to the Pañayacu River delta, where we will embark on a canoe trip to Pañacocha Lake (“Piranha Lagoon” in the native Kichwa language), an ecosystem flooded by blackwater river water. We will then recharge our energy with an Amazon-style barbeque at a community camp, and after a short rest, we will take part in aquatic activities such as kayaking and/or swimming. Back on board the Anakonda, we will build on what we learned with an interesting talk about the region given by our guides.

TUESDAY: PARROT CLAY LICKS AND AMAZON COMMUNITIES

We will set out on our motorized canoes early in the morning to witness one of the most incredible sights on this side of the Western Amazon - the famous parrot clay licks. This unique place is rich in minerals and attracts hundreds of colorful parrots, parakeets and Amazon birds who meet up here to lick the clay which provides a healthy boost to their digestion. In the afternoon we will visit the Kichwa women’s community project, where we will learn about the indigenous lifestyle along the Napo river, their ancestral culture, and their community, and will have the opportunity to support them by purchasing handicrafts, local products, and souvenirs, as well as the opportunity to participate in the Charapas Turtle Conservation that we support together with the community.

WEDNESDAY: RETURN

This is where our adventure ends! But first, we will enjoy our return to Puerto Providencia where we will disembark the Anakonda Amazon Cruise and ride back to the city of Coca in the motorized canoe.

How to Select a River Cruise as an Older Woman

Selecting a river cruise as an older woman requires careful consideration of several factors to ensure a comfortable, enjoyable, and enriching travel experience.

Destination and Itinerary

Consider the destinations and itinerary options offered by various river cruise lines. Think about your interests and preferences – whether you prefer exploring historic cities, scenic landscapes, cultural sites, or wildlife-rich regions. Research the ports of call, shore excursions, and onboard activities to find an itinerary that aligns with your interests.

Cruise Line and Ship

Research different river cruise lines and their reputations for quality, service, and amenities. Consider factors such as the size of the ship, onboard facilities (e.g., dining options, entertainment, wellness amenities), and the level of inclusivity (e.g., all-inclusive vs. Ă  la carte pricing). Look for cruise lines that cater to mature travelers and offer amenities and activities tailored to your preferences.

Accommodations

Pay attention to the types of accommodations offered onboard, including cabin sizes, configurations, and amenities. Consider your preferences for comfort, privacy, and accessibility. Some river cruise ships offer special amenities for older travelers, such as accessible cabins, elevators, and mobility aids.

Season and Weather

Take into account the season and weather conditions of your chosen destination. Consider factors such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, and seasonal attractions or events. Depending on your preferences, you may prefer cruising during the shoulder seasons to avoid crowds and extreme weather conditions.

Solo Travel vs. Group Travel

Decide whether you prefer traveling solo or as part of a group. Some river cruise lines offer special programs and accommodations for solo travelers, while others cater to group travel with organized tours and activities. Consider your comfort level and social preferences when choosing the type of travel experience that best suits you.

Health and Mobility Considerations

Take into account any health or mobility considerations that may impact your travel experience. Consider factors such as accessibility of ports and excursions, onboard amenities for wellness and relaxation, and medical facilities and services available onboard. Be sure to communicate any special needs or requirements to the cruise line in advance.

Reviews and Recommendations

Read reviews and testimonials from other travelers, particularly older adults, who have experienced river cruises. Seek recommendations from friends, family, or travel advisors who can provide insights and advice based on their own experiences. Look for reviews that address factors such as service, accommodations, dining, and overall satisfaction.

By considering these factors and doing thorough research, you can select a river cruise that meets your preferences, interests, and travel expectations as an older woman.

Best Cruise Ships in the World The Gold List 2024

Celebrity Beyond Arrow

Cruise ships often get compared to floating hotels or resorts, but here’s one that feels like a floating Vegas show. Applause, please, for the glittering peacock made from Swarovski crystals and the Magic Carpet platform that shimmies up and down the ship, cantilevered over the water for some of the best seats in the house, while in the Martini Bar, a troupe of bartenders juggle shakers to the sound of “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Beyond is one of the largest ships in Celebrity’s Edge class, and all that space is used to maximize the drama. A whole corridor is filled with a glowing installation of bronze sculptures reflected in infinity mirrors; a favorite anchorage was Eden, a beautiful, biophiliac bubble for hiding away in, watching the ship’s wake through triple-height windows and dawdling in swivel chairs that resemble green carnations. As for the cast, there are some stellar performers: Kelly Hoppen designed most of the interiors; Daniel Boulud’s debut signature restaurant at sea, Le Voyage, has an impeccable, globe-trotting menu alighting on Brazilian moqueca and tamarind prawns. But top of the bill is Captain Kate McCue, the first American woman to captain a cruise ship. A captain hasn’t been this synonymous with their ship since the days of Merrill Stubing; follow her social media for a glimpse into the art of ship navigation. During our short, prelaunch cruise, we had an itinerary that involved looping round and round the Isle of Wight—a short trip, but one that was big on sheer spectacle. Three-night sailings from $300 per person. —Rick Jordan

Delfin II. Amazon

Delfin II Arrow

The Amazon River has the opacity of chocolate milk and is almost deathlike in its stillness—which is wild when you consider how much life thrives there. It was on a nine-day journey through Peru with Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic that I learned this, as we spent five of those days exploring the jungle by boat. Our chariot: the Delfin II , a Relais & Chñteaux vessel with 14 thoughtfully appointed staterooms.

Most days began with a crack-of-dawn skiff ride soundtracked by the squall of jewel-winged, dusky-headed parakeets. The photographers pulled out their football lenses and the birders gasped from behind their binoculars as naturalists pointed out an elegant snowy egret picking its way through a mudbank, a neotropic cormorant spreading its gothy black wings like a vampire, and the somber Jabiru stork, the largest flying bird in South America, standing like a dour English butler on a naked tree limb. Also flagged were capuchin monkeys, giant river otters, flamboyant bromeliads, and—after dark—scores of caimans and capybaras.

We spent one muggy morning in a Kukama village, where indigenous women wove raffia bowls and cooked catfish, and another morning paddling the river—an outing which culminated with a pod of pink river dolphins leaping from the water mere feet from our kayaks. (Even our seen-it-all naturalist, Sandro, clapped like a schoolgirl.)

This deep in the Amazon jungle, there were no other tourists. When we did see signs of human life, they were usually fishermen or park rangers. And because there was no Wi-Fi on the Delfin II and a near total blackout on cell reception, downtime was spent attending lectures on Amazonian ecology, sampling native fruits (how the aptly named ice cream bean hasn’t been pitched on Shark Tank yet, I’ll never know), and buddying up to the ship bar, where I made fast friends of fellow guests. (Expedition cruises always draw a fascinating lot; my cohort included a microbiologist, metaphysical transcendentalist, and one of the earliest Apple employees.)

The highlight of the trip, however, was hiking through the jungle with a local tracker who showed us a brown-throated three-toed sloth, Goliath bird-eating tarantula, junior anaconda, and a century-old strangler fig. When we finally emerged from the bush, we were treated to a spectacular tangerine-and-charcoal sunset punctured by bolts of lighting. It was surreal and intense, just like everything else in this untouched corner of the world. Eight-day sailings from $5,730 per person. —Ashlea Halpern

Ritz-Carlton Evrima Arrow

Ritz-Carlton’s first foray into cruising, the Evrima is a hotel-at-sea experience that might just be the antidote to all the big ship itineraries. Think ultra-small ship luxury (at half the capacity of the Seabourns and Regents) with plenty of scenery options to choose from—the European Mediterranean (routes from Turkey to the Canary Islands) from spring through fall, and the Caribbean (San Juan to St. Barts) in winter—and a younger crowd than most of the luxury cruise market; mostly culture lovers with a dearth of cruising experience who can't wait to get ashore to the Cîte d’Azur village restaurants. The 624-foot ship is the first in a fleet of three emerging over the next few years, and it still feels spacious with 149 suites, two pools, a cigar humidor, six bars (the interior Living Room and top-floor Observation Lounge, The Bar, and bars located at the Marina Terrace, the Pool House, and Mistral), a beauty salon and spa deck, water-level marina terrace with water toys, and a fitness center. The 246 staff range from deck crew to your cabin’s personal concierge, all of whom are dubbed the ship’s Ladies and Gentlemen—but titles feel almost superfluous aboard Evrima , where everyone from the tender drivers to dining leads will pause to actually get to know you and recall your name and story (and even your drink order) to make the entire experience feel organic and warm. It’s almost like you’re spending the night in someone’s home, which just so happens to be a 624-foot mega-yacht. And the Evrima itinerary has plenty of free time and overnight ports of call in its sailings, so you can head ashore for a day, or even an entire evening late into the night—gallivanting, dining, and imbibing with the new friends you'll no doubt meet onboard. Seven-night sailings from $5,800 per person. —Shannon McMahon

Oceania Marina Arrow

Is there any Marina passenger who doesn’t wish—even for a second—to confine himself to his stateroom on debarkation day? Perhaps only the smarty pants who booked their next cruise before this one ends. Otherwise, how can an epicurean cruiser (that’s Marina ’s crowd) not pine for another shot at the new wine list starring 80 highly coveted, hard-to-snag labels, including swoon-worthy Super Tuscans? You’ll long for one more brag-worthy chance to sip The Mascot, a label from Harlan family pedigree (think cult fave Harlan Estate); the Polo Grill’s deft sommelier knows exactly which prime steak pairs best. Despite eight compelling complimentary restaurants (Red Ginger’s signature lobster pad thai is still a must-devour), Marina vibes far more than great meals. Work up a sweat storm playing pickleball on deck 16 or braving core conditioning in the gym. Melt into a marine detox wrap (I love the juniper and lemon scent) at Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center, then sink into the spa terrace’s bubbling hot tub. Get down and dirty in the artist loft by painting a Venetian mask and playing Impressionist. In the hands-on culinary center, learn to cure a fish or preserve a lemon. Come May 2024, Marina debuts a splashy redo. Fall in love again with revamped avocado toast—bravo to the taco-spiced shrimp topping—in the new wellness-driven Aquamar kitchen. Where you lie your head hardly matters. An entry 291-square-foot stateroom starring a four-pillow, soft-sheet bed feels mighty spacious and sports Bulgari shampoo. That said, the top-to-bottom penthouse suites’ glam reno is beyond covetable, from the expanded bath to a boatload of enviable perks. Ten-day sailings from $1,999 per person. —Janice Wald Henderson

Trollfjord Arrow

Who better to guide you through Norway’s most remote reaches—including the Svalbard archipelago, the northernmost inhabited islands on the planet—than a Norwegian cruise company that knows the area’s every crag and fjord? Hurtigruten is an Oslo-based line whose ships have traversed these waters since 1893, ferrying freight, mail, and passengers to the communities along the rugged coast. In 2023, to celebrate its 130th anniversary, the company’s flagship, the newly refurbished, 500-passenger MS Trollfjord (named for a fjord in the VesterĂ„len archipelago) began sailing two hybrids of its original 34-port Norwegian Coastal Express, calling at several of the towns and villages on the original route. From September through April, the North Cape Express (a 13-day, 16-port itinerary) sails from Oslo to the North Cape and then south to Bergen. In the summertime, the Svalbard Express’s eight-day journey begins in Bergen and progresses north, with extended port calls and excursions in seven towns before entering the Arctic Circle and pulling into Longyearbyen, a mining town on Spitsbergen, Svalbard’s main island. On both routes Trollfjord offers its (mostly European) passengers an uncommon way to explore the region, with uniquely Nordic cultural touches to connect them to the country. There’s a pre-boarding spread of Norwegian fare in the ship’s departure lounge, and Trollfjord ’s three restaurants prioritize Scandinavian cuisine (salmon, reindeer, and lingonberries, oh my!) and the food culture of the indigenous SĂĄmi people. The ship’s 277 staterooms and 12 suites (with walk-in closets, corner bathtubs and floor-to-ceiling windows) offer a cozy retreat from the sometimes-harsh weather. And typically Nordic diversions such as aquavit tastings, oceanview saunas and polar plunges leave you in no doubt about where you are and who you’re sailing with. 10-day sailings from $3,082 per person. —Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon

Cruise Ship Regent Seven Seas Navigator

Seven Seas Navigator Arrow

Imagine the most luxurious hotel you’ve ever stayed in. That’s precisely what stepping onboard the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Navigator feels like. And while the opulence and grandeur shine through every square inch of space, it’s worth mentioning that the staff are what make the experience memorable, remembering your name, preferences, likes, and dislikes from the second you step afoot the eight-deck vessel.

The 248 ultraluxe all-suite accommodations feel like your home away from home—despite their capacious interiors—and your personalized steward makes sure of that with thoughtful touches from the moment you check in. Thanks to a revamp in 2019, the ship feels pristine with a new library—complete with a faux fireplace—and sleek state-of-the-art furnishings (including the cruise line’s bespoke mattresses and bed linens) in each of the rooms. However, what makes the Navigator stand out from its counterparts is its intimate size, as it’s the smallest in Regent’s fleet. Everything onboard feels just an arm’s reach away, and you’ll quickly bond with fellow passengers after spending the day together on one of the complimentary shore excursions, such as tours by local guides, cooking classes, and other intimate adventures.

During my Mediterranean voyage, days were spent immersing ourselves in new cities, whereas nights began with a freshly shaken ice-cold martini followed by an exuberant dinner, with a stop in the Seven Seas Lounge for whatever was on tap that night, ranging from cabaret to karaoke. At the end of the journey, I left wanting more and with a suitcase full of clean clothes, thanks to one of the many attentive touches onboard: the included laundry service. 10-night sailings from $3,360 per person. —Rachel Dube

Seabourn Ovation Arrow

“We are not the Rat Pack,” quips Andrew Pedder, the witty Yorkshire-born captain of Seabourn Ovation. He's referring to himself and the other senior officers, for any guests who may have wandered into their impromptu panel session instead of the musical show taking place later that evening. The Q&A—which covers everything from the prettiest ports to the number of Champagne bottles typically consumed during a seven-day voyage—is part of a last-minute program of activities arranged for an unexpected sea day when it’s too windy to dock in the South of France. This is mid-October, on one of the ship’s jaunts around the Mediterranean for the season, and no one seems to mind the change of plan (although when we do explore, all the islands we visit—Menorca, Corsica, Elba—are blissfully tourist-free). It simply means more time for spa treatments, soaks in the outdoor hot tubs, and afternoon tea in the observation bar. Even then, it only feels like there are 60 passengers onboard, rather than 600. The restaurants are excellent, from Sushi, where you can sit at the counter watching the Japanese chefs at work, to poolside Earth & Ocean for Tandoori-style rotisserie chicken and Madras-style white bean cassoulet. Suites are spacious, each one with a balcony. West End–standard entertainment includes a magician and a chart-topping classical singer. But what makes this ultraluxe ship really memorable is the relaxed, on-point service by staff who remember your name and coffee order, or even a familiar face from a sailing five years ago. Seven-day sailings from $2,649 per person. —Emma Love

The Restaurant Silver Endeavour

Silver Endeavour Arrow

Silversea is defined by its far-flung itineraries and exceptional onboard service (think MoĂ«t Champagne as you take in an iceberg calving in Antarctica). But the 220-passenger Silver Endeavour, new to the fleet and already a classic, raises every bar. Rooms start at a spacious 356 square feet and have luxury perks like pillow menus and a personalized bar, making them the best in all of Silversea’s array of ships. As far as food goes, premium Ars Italica Osetra caviar is complimentary and around-the-clock, though the Dover sole paired with a label from the rare wine menu at La Dame would have you believing you were in Paris. And the signature Otium spa celebrates pampering as much as it does wellness—don’t skip on the oxygen-boosting Golden Radiance facial. You may find yourself at any given hour glimpsing ice walls through the Drake Passage and remembering that the best part about this ship is the awe-inspiring places it dares to take you. 10-day sailings from $13,150. —Janice Wald Henderson

Scarlet Lady Arrow

Although new to the cruise industry, Virgin Voyages has already begun to set itself apart from its predecessors. When first stepping on the Scarlet Lady, cruisers are met with a rousing, upbeat staff that serve as gurus around the ship and are experts on everything from beauty to juicing. While the Scarlet Lady takes you on a familiar route around the Caribbean, the on-shore excursions available are what make this sail memorable. Take a leap of faith on daring outings such as the Waterfalls of Damajagua in Puerto Plata, where guests make their way down seven of the 27 natural slides and waterfalls. After the exhilarating experience, travelers can sit down with locals and come together over Dominican staples such as pollo guisado, tostones, and mangĂș. You can always get local delicacies while docked, but while onboard, you must snag a reservation at the Test Kitchen. It’s an experimental dining experience where the menu always evolves. You go in only seeing a small card with ingredients listed for the night’s meal, but everything else is up to the imagination. One might find cucumbers purĂ©ed and frozen into ice cream as dessert, or beets formed and prepared like steak. While en route to the next port, the hard reset one does at the Redemption Spa leaves your body feeling anew; it’s impossible to come back from vacation feeling the same as when you departed. On any Virgin Voyages ship, you’ll love the indulgent atmosphere, whether you’re catering to your sweet tooth by narrowing down your favorite gelato of the day, grabbing a drink at one of the five bars that stake claim to having the largest tequila supply on the seven seas, or finally getting that tattoo you’ve been thinking about for ages after visiting the ship’s tattoo parlor, Squid Ink. Seven-day sailings from $2,100 per person. —Paris Wilson

Queen Mary 2 Arrow

Six days sailing from England to New York across the vast Atlantic had the potential to bore me to stupefaction, but it turned out I had nothing to fear. “The ship is the destination,” said an entertainment director for Queen Mary 2 , who oversees a program that makes this cruise liner the undisputed hub of creative and intellectual stimulation on the high seas. Where else can you attend the annual Literature Festival At Sea, meeting top fiction and nonfiction authors like the late PJ O’Rourke, Bernadine Evaristo, and Louis de Berniùres? And where else can you visit a planetarium, watch a Royal Shakespeare theater production, or hear guest speakers discuss artwork investments and the history of airport drug mules?

In between spa massages and table tennis rallies, I nourished my mind in the mahogany library before nourishing my body at the Princess Grill and Queens Grill restaurants, scarfing dishes like croquette of suckling pig, paired with excellent vintages and followed by mango panna cotta. On the final stretch of the journey, as dolphins leapt over the horizon and the Statue of Liberty loomed into view, my heart sank a little—New York City awaited, yet I didn’t want to disembark. That’s quite an achievement. Seven-day sailings from $1,389 per person. —Noo Saro-Wiwa

World Navigator Arrow

During my first few hours aboard the Atlas Ocean Voyages World Navigator, I felt a bit like I had inadvertently crashed a family reunion: Seemingly everyone else aboard this Arctic expedition had just sailed to Antarctica on the Navigator six months before, so several crew members and guests spent much of embarkation day hugging and catching up. With a maximum occupancy of 196, it’s already an intimate ship, but the fact that the relatively young brand, which debuted in 2019, could develop such an impressive number of repeat travelers in such a short spell speaks volumes. Many told me they were drawn to Atlas because of its eco-friendly bona fides (the new-build ship makes use of hybrid engines from Rolls-Royce designed to leave minimal impact), but the creature comforts on board certainly help. While the star attraction of such an expedition voyage is what lies beyond the decks—access to remote Antarctic fjords that larger vessels can’t dream of traversing, or spotting polar bears loping along pearly glaciers in the Arctic—I made the most of my time in between Zodiac expeditions. The multi-jet shower in my stateroom was sublime after damp and rigorous treks, the heated massage beds in the only L’Occitane Spa at sea are a dream, and the Arctic summer’s 24 hours of sunshine made the Dome observation deck a prime perch to cozy up with a book at any time of day or night. There was neither internet nor cell phone connectivity during my entire eight-day journey sailing thanks to the remote latitudes (though Atlas guests now have access to full Starlink satellite coverage), which meant this was the longest I’d been offline since the 1990s—and yet somehow, drifting through the surreal landscape in this cosseting bubble, I didn’t miss scrolling or chatting with the outside world one bit. Seven-night sailings from $4,749 per person. —Sarah Khan

Westerdam Arrow

A passenger who is well below senior age dances the robot to classic rock, to R&B, to country music, and to disco hits as talented singers and a live band perform most nights in the Rolling Stone Lounge, on Holland America Line’s Westerdam . His mechanical movements are a source of amusement and encouragement; if he can take over the dance floor, so can we with our own moves. The 1,916-passenger Westerdam is beloved as a traditional cruise ship, with its smaller-than-mega-ship size, deep blue hull, wraparound outdoor promenade deck, and details such as fresh flowers all around, celebrating the 150-year-old cruise line’s Dutch roots. Tradition does not mean staid. There’s rock and roll. There’s a trendy top-of-ship pickleball court.

On an Alaska cruise, my husband and I start our days with a jolt of caffeine via the baristas at Explorations Central, the ship’s cushy, contemporary, forward-facing observation lounge, before heading off on adventures such as joining other passengers in synchronized paddling a large canoe to see the ancient yet diminishing ice of Juneau’s Mendenhall Glacier. Back on the ship, we indulge in excellent burgers, topped with Gouda and applewood-smoked bacon and served in fast-food wrapping from a stand at the covered Lido pool. We enjoy sustainable Alaska seafood—grilled salmon, fennel-crusted halibut, fried cod—in between cocktails made with local gin, served on real glacial ice. From the veranda of our classic aft cabin, mesmerizing views of the ship’s wake, seemingly endless forest, and a distant, blue-tinged glacier clear our brain. We’re ready for more of the dancing man. Seven-day sailings from $379 per person. —Fran Golden

Your Itinerary

1 Portland, OR (Pre-Cruise Hotel) Arrive in Portland and settle into your hotel, located right at the ship’s dock for a seamless boarding process. Situated between the waters of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, the area's history is forever entwined with the fortunes of these great rivers.

2 Portland, OR Welcome to the City of Roses! Portland's history and culture has forever been entwined with the two rivers that flow around and thru it: the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. If you're planning to arrive early into Portland, talk to our agents about putting together a city tour, crossing many of Portland's beautiful bridges, and even stopping at the International Test Garden featuring over 6800 rose bushes!

3 Astoria, OR Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, close to where Lewis & Clark wintered at Fort Clatsop during their Corps of Discovery expedition. Just stepping off the boat you'll have access to the city trolley - a quaint ride along the waterfront that will explain all the highlights of Astoria - and the Columbia River Maritime Museum, examining the history of crossing the bar and the actual ships and artifacts of ships that found the crossing too dangerous. Other options from here: Fort Clatsop Tour & Astoria Experience, or Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment.

4 Kalama/Mount St. Helens, WA There is nothing more magnificient or eye-catching than the beautiful Mount St. Helens. She is a local treasure, despite her grumblings and 1980 eruption. Everyone should take this complimentary excursion to Johnston Ridge Observatory. Make sure to watch the film, where you can hear Johnston call out: "Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!" His last transmission before perishing in the eruption.

5 The Dalles, OR The Dalles, the last stop on the historic Oregon Trail, nestles along the Columbia River with a beautiful view of both Mount Hood and Mount Adams, each towering more than 11,000 feet above your cruise ship. To the pioneers of the 1800s, this rugged terrain was treacherous, but to today's visitors, it is fascinating. Venture ashore on your own to explore the historic downtown, steps from the ship, featuring fascinating museums, intimate cafes, local pubs, and a collection of historic murals which embellish the streetscape. Or enjoy guided excursions to learn about the area’s rich history, view a unique art collection in a magnificent building perched on a bluff above the river, or spend an afternoon with expert sommeliers enjoying the bounty of the fertile Columbia Valley.

6 Cruising the Columbia River Gorge Enjoy a day cruising the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

7 Pendleton, OR/Richland, WA The Hanford Reach Museum in Richland is an amazing option for your fun today. Or book the Pendleton Signature Tour: underground city tour, BBQ lunch at Hamley's Restaurant, and visits to the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute and Pendleton Woolen Mills.

8 Clarkston, WA At the border lies Clarkston, WA and Lewiston, ID - I wonder how they got their names? There's so much history and culture to explore here, including the complimentary excursion to the Nez Perce National Historic Park. But the Hells Canyon Jet Boat Signature Tour is always a hit. Be sure to sign up for this one in advance - it fills up!

9 Disembark in Clarkston, WA Talk to our agents about travel arrangements, or lengthening your stay with a hotel in Spokane, WA.

Onboard Experience

The American Cruise Line fleet of ships are the newest and most environmentally friendly small ships in the US. The cruise line prides itself on their hospitable staff, and that you’ll be graciously received no matter which ship you cruise on. The large staterooms with interior entrances ensure you have a relaxed, private area to watch the river from, or visit any of the many onboard lounges. Daily entertainment will be brought onboard, including musicians, historians and naturalists.

Regionally-Inspired Menus

American Cruise Lines uses fresh, local ingredients to show off the culinary glory of the region you’re cruising in. On the Mississippi River, that could mean Andouille Gumbo, a po’boy with red beans and rice, and bourbon pecan pie. In New England, you could find Littleneck clam ceviche on the menu followed by a spiced apple pudding with maple whipped cream. In the Pacific Northwest, you’ll find fresh fish on the menu, including shrimp bisque or Dungeness Crab cake, and a marionberry cheesecake that’ll make your mouth water! Your ship will provide you with a list of all the locally-sourced ingredients when you unpack.

Eagle Society

Once you’ve cruised aboard any American Cruise Line ship, you are an Eagle Society member. It’s free to be a member, but your loyalty to American Cruise Lines is greatly rewarded. You’ll receive Eagle Society luggage tags, and member-only gifts when you board each cruise. After 3 cruises, you’ll receive complimentary premium shore excursions. After 10 cruises, you’ll get a complimentary 11th cruise. There are special Eagle Society cruise dates every year. Plus all Eagle Society member benefits can be used when booking with USA River Cruises, plus you’ll still be eligible for our loyal customer benefits as well.
