Concert Review – lovelytheband, Beach Weather & Ava Maybee at The Novo

On June 7, I made the two-hour drive to Los Angeles to attend a concert at The Novo, featuring two acts I love – lovelytheband and Beach Weather – along with opening act Ava Maybee . Headlined by L.A.-based indie pop-rock band lovelytheband, the tour is officially titled the “ if we’re being honest tour ” after their new album of the same name, and included supporting acts Beach Weather and Ava Maybee. It was the second night of the tour, and a thrill for me to be able to see both lovelytheband and Beach Weather at the same show. Discovering Ava Maybee was a wonderful surprise and the icing on the cake, so to speak.

Located downtown near the LA Convention Center, Crypto.com arena (home of basketball teams LA Clippers, LA Lakers and LA Sparks, and hockey team LA Kings), Microsoft Theater and Grammy Museum, The Novo is a terrific venue that’s perfect for small to mid-sized concert events. This was my second time seeing a concert there, the first being electro/dream pop band Cannons last September. I like that they have balcony seating, as this old man can no longer tolerate standing for three-plus hours.

The concert kicked off around 7:40 pm when Ava Maybee and her band began their set, immediately getting everyone into a good mood with their soulful brand of indie pop inspired by some of her favorite artists such as Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Sam Cooke, Carole King, Leon Bridges and Adele. I wasn’t previously familiar with Ava or her music, but liked it right from the start. Born Ava Cardoso-Smith and based in Los Angeles, she’s been singing and performing since the age of five. Her father is Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and her mother is Trisha Cardoso, currently President and Chief Giving Officer at The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation. Ava has sung the national anthem at Lakers and Dodgers games, and performed at numerous charity events. She was also a contestant on season 20 of American Idol , making it to the top 14 before being eliminated.

She’s released a series of great singles since 2020, one of which, “Colors”, has garnered over 7.3 million streams on Spotify alone! Dressed in knee-high white boots and red leggings, Ava exuding the confidence and poise of a seasoned performer as she worked the stage, engaging with the audience between songs and playfully interacting with her back-up band, all of whom were excellent musicians. They played their songs “Lay Low”, “Mood Swings”, “Puke”, “See Me Now” and their newest single “Limerence”, as well as a lively rendition of the Police classic “Roxanne”, then finishing with “Colors”, a portion of which I was able to film. We’ve all been to concerts where we suffered through an opening act we either didn’t care about or enjoy, but Ava Maybee was both terrific and immensely enjoyable.

After a short break, Beach Weather took to the stage around 8:30 pm, opening their set with the sultry “Swoon”, from their 2016 EP What A Drag . Though the alternative pop-rock trio formed in 2015, I didn’t learn about them until last summer when I heard their gorgeous song “Sex, Drugs, Etc.”. The song was originally recorded in 2016, and included on their first EP Chit Chat , but wasn’t released as a single back then, and largely went unnoticed. I loved it at first listen, and they’ve since become one of my favorite bands. I love every single song of theirs, which is not something I can say about very many artists or bands.

After dropping What a Drag and a third EP Basement Sessions , the band went on hiatus at the end of 2017 as the three members – singer/guitarist Nick Santino, bassist Reeve Powers, and guitarist Sean Silverman – relocated to different cities and began focusing on their own careers and families. Fortunately for us, they reunited in late 2021, and recorded their debut album Pineapple Sunrise , which they released this past March. In the meantime, “Sex, Drugs, Etc.” went viral on TikTok and became a huge hit on alternative radio, going all the way to #1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, where it’s remained in the top 10 for more than 40 weeks. It’s also spent nearly six months on my Weekly Top 30, three of them at #1, and ended up at #3 on my 100 Best Songs of 2022 list. “Trouble With This Bed”, the second single from Pineapple Sunrise , also spent five months on my chart earlier this year, three of them at #1. The title track recently began what I’m sure will be an extended run on my chart.

OK, now back to the show! Beach Weather played a total of 10 songs, two from Chit Chat , two from What A Drag , and six from Pineapple Sunrise (though “Sex, Drugs, Etc.” is featured on both Chit Chat and Pineapple Sunrise ). They had a simple stage setup, with two orange curtains as backdrops and round orange rugs for each of the three band members. They were also joined by a keyboardist and drummer, whose names I unfortunately can’t recall. The guys exuded a cool, casual demeanor on stage; Nick was engaging and playful, while an animated Sean made theatric gestures with his guitar and Reeve exuded a sexy, low-key swagger as he played bass. They sounded great, and I would have loved for them to play 10 more songs!

After Ava Maybee and Beach Weather’s sets and before lovelytheband took the stage, I went over to their merchandise booths and briefly met Ava, telling her how much I enjoyed her set. Her father Chad was standing nearby talking with some people but, unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to meet him. I did, however meet Beach Weather bassist Reeve Powers, who I ran into again the following morning in the lobby of our hotel, where both I and Beach Weather were staying.

After a more lengthy intermission, headline act lovelytheband appeared on stage to thunderous applause, opening their set with “if we’re being honest”, the title track of their latest album. For a bit of background, the Los Angeles-based band formed in 2016, and consists of vocalist Mitchy Collins, guitarist Jordan Greenwald, and drummer Sam Price. They’re best known for their 2018 debut single and monster hit “broken”, which spent nine weeks at #1 on  Billboard ‘s Alternative chart, as well as reaching #1 on the Adult Top 40 chart and #29 on the Hot 100. It ended up as the #1 song of 2018 on the Alternative chart, and was my favorite song that year as well.

They’ve released three studio albums – finding it hard to smile in 2018, conversations with myself about you in 2020, and if we’re being honest , which dropped June 2nd – as well as numerous singles and EPs. (The titles of all their songs and albums, as well as their band name, are in lower case.) As evidenced by their album titles, a lot of their songs touch on relationship issues, heartache, depression and anxiety, though many are presented in a pleasing, rather upbeat manner.

The engaging frontman Mitchy Collins, wearing his signature sleeveless shirt and shorts, proceeded to acknowledge Beach Weather and Ava Maybee, and introduce his bandmates. They were joined on stage by another guitarist, who’s name I didn’t catch.

Throughout their set, which included 16 songs from their three albums, he frequently spoke to the audience, sharing his thoughts on some of their songs as well as his struggles with mental health and depression. Two thirds of the way into their set, he appeared alone on stage to give a deeply moving acoustic performance of their heart-wrenching “i should be happy”, which speaks to feeling unhappy and dissatisfied, despite achieving all the things he’d hoped for. The song strongly resonated with me, as I’ve sadly experienced similar feelings myself throughout my life.

They finished their set with “i can’t love”, then walked off stage, though we knew they’d be back, because they hadn’t yet played their signature song “broken”. Sure enough, they returned to play the lively “make you feel pretty”, from finding it hard to smile , then closed with a rousing performance of “broken”. It was a great finish to a spectacular performance and concert.

Glad to hear you evidently had a great time, Jeff, especially given the all the logistics you had to deal with to attend the show!

If driving back after a concert is within 2.5-3 hours, usually, I’ll do it. In all of my 25 years in the U.S. thus far, I’ve only stayed overnight for three concerts: The Rolling Stones (Oct 2005) and Paul McCartney (July 2016), each in Hershey. Pa; and Neil Young solo (Boston, July 2018).

Sometimes, opening acts can be true revelations. Ava Maybee’s vocals sound impressive.

One example I still vividly recall is an Aug 2017 show by Keb’ Mo’ and Taj Mahal in Wilkes Barre, Pa. as part of their supporting tour for their great collaboration “TajMo.” The evening was opened by then 21-year-old Jontavious Willis. This country blues guitarist who performed all by himself with an acoustic guitar absolutely killed it. Taj Mahal rightfully has called him “wunderkind”.

It was all actually a breeze. Drove into LA late morning, luckily encountering only one traffic jam downtown due to an accident, and made it there in exactly two hours. Was able to check into our hotel early, then went to the Grammy Museum, which like the theater was right across the street from the hotel.

We’ve driven home from LA after concerts several times, but it’s pretty grueling, especially as we get older, and I just don’t want to do it anymore.

That’s good to hear. Based on my recollection from a few previous visits, LA traffic can be pretty intense.

When it’s a 2-hour drive, staying over sounds like a good idea. One of reasons why I don’t want to do that is that in most cases my wife doesn’t accompany me to shows I see. Our music tastes are very different.

Looks like an awesome venue! Glad you enjoyed the concert, can’t say I know of them.

Sounds like a great show. I’ll be in LA very soon for a family trip. Can’t wait. However, no good shows while we are there so a little sad about that.

Great pics and video, nice looking stage! Sounds like you had a blast. Good on ya! I would’ve stayed overnight, too. Maybe in my younger, scrappier days I was more of a road warrior, but I need to be pampered a bit these days. Don’t judge! I earned it LMFAO. Ava Maybee is a neat find for me, want to check more of her stuff out. I really like the artists you mentioned as her influences.

Great video Jeff…I mean great and the sound also. Glad you had a good time but that drive had to suck. I traveled to Churchill Downs in Kentucky to see the Stones…3 hours but I was in my 30s at the time… now I would stay the night.

Thanks Max. I read an article yesterday that a musician posted on Twitter about how many artists and bands hate when people film their performances at concerts, and that it’s also technically illegal. So I feel very conflicted doing it, even though it is nice to memorialize a bit of the show.

Well Jeff…I think in your case…you are actually promoting the bands. It’s not like you are getting personal gain out of it like bootleggers who sell recordings. I’m amazed on the quality.

I’ve seen lovelytheband and they put on an amazing show. Ava Maybee is a surprise. Wonderful vibe. Definitely have to hear more from her. Great review.

These bands sound great! The acoustics are very important to me as I’ve been to some godawful venues. If you ever make it out to Nashville, check out the Ryman. The pews are uncomfortable but everyone sounds amazing

The Novo is a terrific venue in downtown LA. Comfortable seats and beautiful bar & lounge areas too.

Ava Maybee, daughter of Red Hot Chili Peppers ‘ drummer Chad Smith , was rechristened “Ava Yes” on Sunday after wowing the  American Idol   judges with a cover of Stevie Wonder ’s “Lately.”

Maybee, whose full name is Ava Maybee Cardoso-Smith, took the stage accompanied by Austin Hayman on acoustic guitar. Her rich alto voice reminded judge Lionel Richie of Cher, and the run-heavy performance prompted Luke Bryan to opine, “I do feel like you’re an artist. I’m interested to hear and see more of what you’ve got going on.”

Meanwhile, Katy Perry cautioned her that with such a low register, she’ll be “challenged a lot” going forward in the competition. Perry did seem wowed with her outfit, saying, “I don’t know how you put floral and leopard together but it looks so good on you.” Perhaps most impressively, none of the judges seemed aware of her musical lineage. Richie said, “I’m going to go against your family. You’re not going to be a Maybee, you’re going to be a For Sure.”

“Ava Yes!” Perry and Bryan both agreed, securing the young talent a golden ticket to Hollywood. Check out her performance below.

Maybee isn’t the only descendant of a music icon to audition this year. Last month, Aretha Franklin’s 15-year-old granddaughter tried out , though the judges weren’t impressed.

As for Maybee’s famous father, Smith and the rest of Red Hot Chili Peppers are gearing up to release Unlimited Love ,  their first album with guitarist John Frusciante since 2006. The LP is out April 1st, and so far they’ve shared the singles “Not the One,”   “Poster Child,”  and   “Black Summer,”  which we named our Song of the Week .

This summer, the alternative legends will embark on a massive stadium tour  with support from The Strokes, Beck, St. Vincent, HAIM, A$AP Rocky, Anderson .Paak, Thundercat, and King Princess. The tour includes a headlining appearance at Louder Than Life 2022 , and tickets are available here .

lovelytheband Release Highly-Anticipated Album 'if we're being honest'

lovelytheband will be hitting the road this summer with support from Beach Weather and Ava Maybee.

Alt-pop trio lovelytheband released their third full length album, if we’re being honest, via the band’s own record label, happy accident, in partnership with Vydia.

The album includes the band’s latest single, “sail away,” which currently boasts over 45M streams globally, hit #3 on the Alternative Radio charts, and got the remix treatment from multi-platinum producer & acclaimed DJ, R3HAB. The track continues to climb week after week at radio, on track to break Top 40 on the Hot AC chart.

On creating the new album, lovelytheband vocalist Mitchy Collins shares, “We found ourselves being drawn to songs that all shared a common thread of honesty. The lyrics are literal and expose more of our truth than ever before. It was an incredibly challenging and rewarding experience.

We weren’t only writing music infused with moments of introspection; we put our deepest fears, doubts, and confessions into every line and every melody. The creative process of this record has set into motion a much welcomed inertia of healing. Jordan, Sam, and myself don’t wear our struggles the same way. But they eat at us all. lovelytheband achieved mainstream success with their massive single “broken” which spent 76 weeks on the Billboard Alternative Songs charts, breaking the record of longest run at 66 weeks on that chart. The song has since amassed more than 45 million views on YouTube and 500 million global streams.

Musical talent clearly runs in the Smith family, with Ava Maybee Cardoso-Smith – daughter of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad – recently sharing a truly excellent cover of Universally Speaking.

The singer-songwriter covered her dad's band on piano last week, uploading a beautiful rendition of the By The Way single to a hugely positive reception online. Having been performing since she was just five years old, Ava now also releases her own solo material, unveiling debut single Lay Low late last year, plus this year's See Me Now and Colors.

In RHCP news, Chad confirmed in January 2020 that the band would be recording a new album with returning guitarist John Frusciante .

The sticksman hinted: "I was given strict orders for this interview: 'DON’T TALK ABOUT THE BAND.' But, yes, John is back in the band and everyone knows that. We’re psyched. The festivals are the only shows booked. For now, we’ll mostly be concentrating on new songs and writing a new record. We’re all real excited to make new music."

When asked if that meant Red Hot Chili Peppers are writing an album with John, Chad responded: "Yes. That’s all I can say."

Ava Maybee is a 21 year-old indy pop singer & songwriter from Los Angeles. Singing since before she could walk, Ava Maybee’s musical influences come from all genres including classic rock, Motown soul, and current indy pop. Her soulful bold voice, strong melodies & authentic sense of style led to a ton of charity concerts starting at the age of seven. She support toured in 6 cities last summer for indy bands Quarters of Change, Phangs & Moontower and she has performed at such classic venues as The Hotel Cafe, The Whiskey, & The Nice Guy. Ava Maybee was a fan favorite on American Idol Season 20 where she placed in the top 14 with her standout alto voice, risky song choices & eclectic fashion. Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances.
