I was watching a vlog about Viking river cruises and the narrator said that, even though almost everything is included in the price, tipping is not. Which surprised me. He laid out some general daily guidelines and it seems to come to about 20 euros a day.
Tipping on Avalon?
We just ret'd from an Avalon cruise in July. On the 2nd last night, we were given 2 envelopes. One is for the cruise director. The other one is for ALL the crew and it is split among them. The guidelines (and I think this goes for most lines) is 12E per day per person for the crew, and 3E per person per day for the cruise director.

April 9, 2009. COLUMBUS, Ohio. #3. Posted July 12. Americans are able to pre-pay gratuities at the time of booking, whether booking direct with Avalon or through a TA. I'm not sure if the rules are different for Canadians. If you are already booked, check to see if you can add pre-paid tips.
What to expect on an Avalon Waterways river cruise (2024)
I have been on several Avalon river cruises and noted that your $1000/day price per couple doesn't mention that this is the cost of ONLY the room you stay in. The cruise itself is an additional $4000+/-,add gratuities, port charges, and airfare (which isn't always included) and trip insurance. You are looking at a significantly higher cost.
Tips & Tricks for First Time River Cruisers
7) Keep your passport and Avalon travel documents with you; don't pack in your checked luggage. 8) Put your Avalon Cruise Director's name & number in your phone list. 9) Invest in travel insurance, because even if you're 100% fit, illness and injuries happen. 10) Stay calm if your trip doesn't go as planned.
