More About Haleakala National Park
![haleakala hike tour Haleakala Crater Summit](https://mauihideaway.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/IMG_5716-scaled-1024x510.webp)
Rising above the island of Maui at 10,023 feet above sea level and making up 75% of its land mass is the East Maui Volcano, also known as Haleakala (“house of the sun” in Hawaiian). This massive volcano is the third-largest in Hawaii and boasts a crater that is 7 miles across, 2 miles wide, and 2,600 feet deep. The 30,000-acre Haleakala National Park near Upcountry Maui, all the way to the southeastern coast, offers numerous hikes and activities with rocky desert landscapes near the frontside Summit District and lush rainforests and waterfalls near the backside Kīpahulu District. There are even places to camp for more adventurous travelers!
Haleakala Summit is the best place on the island to watch an absolutely unforgettable sunrise in the morning or sunset in the evening with an amazing array of colors. During the day, Haleakala Summit offers outstanding views of both the land and ocean in all directions, with incredible views of the universe while stargazing at night. Without any competition from city lights, the number of stars you can see is nothing short of impressive.
Both the frontside summit and backside near the coast can be visited on your own. However, a reservation and permit are required to visit the summit at sunrise if you are driving yourself. Sunrise is between 5:30 and 6:30 AM, meaning you’ll have to depart around 3 or 4 AM as the drive via Haleakala Highway is typically 1.5-2.5 hours, depending on where you’re coming from.
One of the best ways to experience Haleakala is through a tour with a knowledgeable guide. Tour options range from sunset/sunrise viewing, hikes, and our favorite, being shuttled to the top and biking back down to the bottom! Whatever you decide to do, keep the elevation in mind, as it can be much colder with strong winds at the top, so be sure to bring extra layers. Additionally, walking trails can be challenging given how thin the air is at that elevation, so take your time and, above all else, have fun!
Driving to the top of Haleakala Summit on your own is possible via the 10-mile Haleakala Highway if you have a car and want to drive. However, it’s a road with a lot of twists and turns that make for a slow drive and typically takes between 1.5 – 2.5 hours. Additionally, an entranc e fee is required for all visitors to the park. A tour is a great option if you’d prefer to sit back and relax on the way up. Not only do you not have to drive, but most tours are led by a knowledgeable guide that will share with you facts about Hawaiian history, culture, and folklore.
As mentioned, the air can be much cooler at the top, as much as 50 °F (-1 °C) cooler than the base with strong winds (it has snowed at the top before). We recommend bundling up or bringing extra layers even when the sky is clear. Additionally, don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Even though it’s cooler at the top, the sun’s rays are still strong enough to give you a burn!
In addition to the cool air, the air is also much thinner, 10,023 feet up at the top of Haleakala. This elevation can make walking trails a challenge for those with breathing problems. So take your time, walk slowly, and stop for breaks often. If you end up with a headache, that could be a sign of altitude sickness that should clear up when you’re back at sea level.
Did you know that you can also camp in Haleakala National Park? Camping is only allowed in designated areas, including the Hosmer Grove Campground in the frontside district and the Kīpahulu Campground in the backside district. For serious adventures, three historic cabins within the crater are only accessible by trail, meaning you have to hike all of your gear in and out. Visit the National Park Service website for more information on camping in Haleakala National Park.
Technically, Haleakala is still considered active! However, it is a dormant volcano, and radiocarbon dating puts its last eruption close to 500 years ago. By comparison, Mauna Loa on the Big Island has erupted more than a dozen times in the last century. The USGS currently has the Volcano Alert Level for Haleakala at “normal,” meaning it’s in a non-eruptive phase.
The name Haleakala comes from early Hawaiians and means “house of the sun.” They believed that the crater at the summit was home to the grandmother of the demigod Maui. According to Hawaiian folklore, Maui lassoed the sun to slow its journey across the sky to make the day longer.

Haleakala Summit Area
Maui hiking trails.
The summit area of Haleakala National Park is ripe for exploring, as it boasts over 30 miles (48 km) of hiking trails. These trails range in difficulty from leisurely 10- minute strolls to multi-day overnight trips, and each trail reveals Haleakala's fascinating landscapes in unique ways.
You might hike in the native shrubland, looking for native forest birds and endemic plants, or in the aeolian cinder desert, exploring the geologic history of the summit.
Regardless of which trails you decide to explore, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of hiking only on the designated trails. First of all, it's the law and getting caught off the trail could land you in trouble. This is not the way you want to spend your Hawaiian vacation! Most importantly, trails are designated and marked because, as a park visitor, you are entering the home of some of the world's rarest plants and animals. Venturing off of the trails could damage or even kill any of these species. You could inadvertently step on seedlings or introduce an invasive species via your shoe soles into delicate areas. Additionally, please be aware that Haleakala is a sacred place for native Hawaiians and Haleakala National Park strives to protect sacred sites by keeping trails in safe areas. Remember to tread with respect when exploring these great trails.
One note: We are including the Hosmer Grove Loop trail in this list of summit trails. However, we recognize that the trail is only partially located within the park.

![haleakala hike tour Hiking the Haleakala Summit Trails is a Maui must do activity.](https://aws.hawaii-guide.com/images/made/haleakala-summit-trails-overlook_1600_655_85_s.jpg)
Hiking the Haleakala Summit Trails is a Maui must do activity.
2. Halemauu Trail (Starting from the Summit)- A great full-day (or longer) hike, this is trail starts at 7,990 ft. and ends at the summit; however, we suggest you start at the summit and leave your car at the trailhead. This way, your car will be waiting for you when you complete your journey and trust us, you'll be glad it's there! The trail begins at the House of the Sun Visitor Center parking lot and descends 2,500 feet in 3.9 miles to the valley floor. Get an early start so you can get the most out of your hike and make it back to your car before nightfall. Please see our dedicated Halemauu Trail page for details about both portions of the trail (summit end and from actual trailhead).
3. Keoneheehee (Sliding Sands) Trail- We think this is the best Haleakala summit hike. Note that this is a very strenuous trail that descends 2,800 ft. in the first 4 miles to the valley floor. The trail begins near the entrance to the Haleakala Visitor Center parking lot. If you prefer a less strenuous, approximately half-day hike, we recommend taking the first 2.5 miles of the trail to the Ka Luu o ka Oo cinder cone before turning around and taking the trail back out. This makes for a nice 5-mile trek, but it'll feel longer due to the extreme elevation. Total elevation gain/loss between the trail head and the cinder cone is approximately 1,400 ft. For more in-depth information about this hike, check out our Keoneheehee Sliding Sands Trail page.
4. Hosmer Grove Loop Trail- Located just about one mile below the Headquarters Visitor Center you'll find the turnoff to Hosmer Grove. Here you'll find mostly non-native shrubland such as eucalyptus, spruce, pine, cedar, and more. The trail's highlight is a half-mile-long nature trail that winds through the forest. Keep your eyes peeled for at least four types of honeycreepers that make their homes here. Note that the Supply Trail can also be accessed from this point, leading uphill through the forest to connect with the Halemauu trail after 2.3 miles. Visit our Hosmer Grove Loop Trail page for more information.
Upcountry Maui & Haleakala Tours
Haleakala and the Upcountry Maui region is a great place to explore; and we recommend doing so with an experienced guide. Here you’ll find our selections for the best Haleakala tours- whether you’re looking for an exciting adventure (think ziplining over a waterfall or zooming down a mountain on two wheels), or something more relaxing and subdued (think watching one of the world’s best sunsets). No matter how you want to experience the region, we have the perfect tour for you. Just make sure to book yours soon, as they can fill up rather quickly.
Upcountry Maui & Haleakala Information
Planning a trip to Haleakala often leaves visitors with a lot of questions: What are the Haleakala summit attractions? Which are the best hiking trails? Where can I get the best views? Here you’ll find the answers to these questions and more. There’s also a wealth of information about the region’s most popular trails and overlooks so you’ll know what to expect at each point.

Classic Haleakala Sunrise Tour
On Skyline’s Haleakala Sunrise Tour, experience edge-of-the-world views open up in all directions while the early sunlight casts hues of natural light onto Haleakala crater floor. Be there when Haleakala National Park awakens with the rising sun near the summit of Haleakalā. The heavenly beauty of the crater at sunrise is why ancient Hawaiians believed this area of the mountaintop was the 'realm of the gods', or 'wao akua'. Haleakala National Park is the #1 visitor attraction on Maui, and Skyline’s Haleakala Sunrise tour is the #1 tour on Maui.

Temperatures at the summit of Haleakalā are routinely in the 30s and 40s. This is the highest point on Mauna Haleakala, and includes an enclosed observatory from where you can see the Big Island. Though the view is not as dramatic as those on the valley cliffs, there are sweeping views from the peak of Puʻu ʻUlaʻula.

The stunning overlook at Pa Ka‘oao (White Hill) provides a 270 degree view of the valley below and the tallest peaks of the Big Island of Hawaii in the distance. Though slightly lower in elevation than Red Hill, the short hike to the top of White Hill provides more dramatic views into the valley and its cinder cone craters.
Summit Visitor Center
![Haleakala Summit Visitor Center Summit Visitor Center](https://www.haleakalamaui.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Haleakala-Summit-Visitor-Center-300x169.jpg)
The best place to watch the sunrise with easy access to ‘Keoneheʻeheʻe Trail, White Hill, and provides incredible views of the cinder cone filled valley, from the high cliffs. It all makes the area around the summit building a popular location to take in the event.
Haleakala Summit Temperature & Precipitation Averages
The weather at the top tends to be quite variable and is hard to predict with any certainty. For example, it could be sunny and bright at the coast, but overcast and rainy at 7000′, blocking the view of the clear skies above 9000′. The webcam on the summit building shows just how quickly the weather can change throughout day. Before heading up the mountain, be prepared for rain, high winds, and cool temperatures.

Parking Within The National Park
The Park has plenty of parking and multiple parking areas. However, parking can be a challenge during sunrise and sunset, particularly at the Summit and Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill) parking lots between the hours of 3am-7am. During sunset, the Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill) parking lot is overflowing with vehicles, though on a much smaller scale than during sunrise. All parking lots are accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities and who require wheelchair assistance.
Hiking Trails From The Summit
Sliding Sands Trail & the short Pa Ka‘oao (White Hill Trail) are the two hiking trails available from the summit district. Sliding Sands Trail connects hikers to multiple cabins and can be followed all the way to Paliku cabins and campground (~8 miles one way). The White Hill Trail is a 0.6 mile out and back trail that climbs up to a scenic location. From the top of the White Hill Trail, hikers are treated to uniques views and perspectives of the crater-filled valley.
Below the summit, hikers can access Halemau’u trail, Hosmer Grove Trails and Leleiwi Overlook Trail.
The best way to explore Haleakala National Park is with a guided tour, which includes hiking guides. Distances, altitude, and the sun can have a more significant effect on hikers at this elevation, and being a part of a guided tour ensures safety and access to the most beautiful parts of the park. A guide will help you explore the uniqueness and sacredness of the mountain, and connect with the ‘aina (land).

Haleakala Maui Tours
The “ best tour ” of Haleakala Maui depends on your preference . Due to this distance between the two sides of the Park, visitors are unable to visit both in a single day. East Maui and the Kipahulu section of the park boasts incredible, tropical beauty, while the summit offers raw and dramatic views of the volcano at the dramatic Kalahaku Overlook. Both Kipahulu Area and the Summit District are equally amazing places to take a guided tour on Maui.

Charter / Private Tours
Your party can have a more intimate experience by renting the entire tour vehicle. Your group can enjoy the day together with a private local guide.
Note that biking tours do not occur within Haleakala National Park. Per National Park rules, biking tours begin just outside the park at around the 6900’ level, well below the summit district. Biking tours occur throughout the day and, due to their dangerous nature, should only be attempted by those who are comfortable biking.
Haleakala Weather
The weather on a mountain can change quickly and without warning. At just over 10,023 feet above sea level, the peak is also much cooler than the beaches at sea level. As a general rule of thumb, the temperature drops 3 degrees for every 1,000’ of elevation gained. On average, the mountaintop is therefore about 30 degrees cooler than the temperature at the beach. Be prepared for this change and remember to pack layers if you’re headed up – even if it’s a balmy 75 degrees along the coast. During the winter months, there is even the possibility of snow! Always be sure to check the weather conditions before heading to the top, and pack coats, windbreakers, closed toe shoes, long pants, blankets, and warm clothes.

Haleakala Sunrise
Sunrise is a special time on the mountain as the sun’s rays demonstrates the origins of the story of Maui, the demi-god, who held the beams of light until the sun agreed to move slower across the sky. The best place to watch the event anywhere in the Hawaiian islands is up at the top of the mountain in the park .
It has become a very popular activity so people will need to take their planning seriously or choose a tour that handles everything for you. Most people don’t expect how cold it is or how fierce the weather can be ( even for a beautiful sunrise ) and never packed appropriate clothes. A Haleakala sunrise tour operator will provide that for you.
The other issue visitors didn’t think about was parking. There is so much interest that the park service had to create a reservation system ( currently at $1.50 / car in addition to the $25 / car entrance fee ) to help limit the numbers entering the park between 3 and 7am. The damage from visitors parking wherever they could caused environmental damage that is not easily repaired in this ecosystem. Safety was also a major concern that was addressed with the system. You can get a reservation online months in advance and additional spots are released the day prior for last minute adventurers.
Preparing for a sunrise experience takes a little bit of planning. The stated times on your phones are not quite correct as they don’t take into account the height at the top. On average it is almost 14 minutes ahead of the phone time. Coming from most hotels you need to plan to leave about 2 hours to get to a great spot in the park to watch the event with brief stops along the way. You will need to look at hitting the road between 2:30 and 3:30am depending on the time of year as you will want to get to a spot in good time to enjoy the entire show which starts about 30-40 minutes before the sun rises.
![Haleakala Summit Sunrise Summit Sunrise](https://www.haleakalamaui.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Haleakala-Summit-Sunrise-Crater-Clouds_1224-300x300.jpg)
Sunrise & Sunset Time Differences From Official Times
Everyone uses the Bishop Museum’s time table for celestial events like sunrise and sunset. They are based in Honolulu.
The difference matters when you are trying to catch an event that won’t wait for you. Remember that sunrise at Haleakala Summit Visitor Center will happen 14 minutes sooner than what is stated and sunset will occur 1 earlier.
- Haleakalā : -14 min. sunrise/ -1 min. sunset.*
- Hāna : -8 min. sunrise/ -7 min. sunset.
- Kula /Keokea: -11 min. sunrise/ -2 min. sunset.*
- Kahului : -7 min. sunrise/ -6 min. sunset.
- Lahaina : -6 min. sunrise/ -5 min. sunset.
Maui At Sunset
Though the summit is Maui’s most popular spot to watch the sunrise, it is also a spectacular place to watch the sunset. As Maui locals will tell you, sunset on Haleakala is one of the island’s best kept “secrets”. Everyone knows the beach is great, not everyone understands how exciting the experience is up there. Not only is the summit less crowded during sunset compared to sunrise, but the colors are just as incredible. In fact, during sunset the sun shines from behind the crater overlook. In contrast, during sunrise the sun shines directly into the crater (and your eyes!), creating heavy shadows. Another benefit to sunset is that can take your time heading to the summit. There’s no rush to roll out of bed and into your car at 2:30am in the morning, and you have time to check on the weather conditions to ensure that you’ll enjoy a clear view.

Cabin, Camping & Sunrise Reservations
Reservations are required for the 2 most popular attractions in Haleakala National Park on Maui – sunrise and wilderness cabins.
Wilderness Cabin Reservations
![Haleakala Crater Paliku Cabin Area Scenic Hiker 3 Crater Paliku Cabin Area Scenic Hiker](https://www.haleakalamaui.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Haleakala-Crater-Paliku-Cabin-Area-Scenic-Hiker-3-300x225.jpg)
The park maintains 3 historic wilderness cabins on the valley floor: Holua, Kapalaoa, and Paliku. Each of the cabins are only accessible by trail and require a hike across rugged terrain among the many cinder cones.
- Holua = 3.7 miles(5.9km)
- Kapalaoa = 5.5 miles (8.9km)
- Paliku = 9.3 miles (15km)
The cabins are booked months in advance and are very basic with a water pump, firewood, and an outhouse. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance using Reserve America’s website at www.recreation.gov . If you are willing to provide a little labor in return, you can join one of the service trips sponsored by Friends of Haleakala National Park .
In addition to cabins, there also has a number of camping options. Camping spots at Kipahulu and Hosmer Grove are based on a first come-first-served basis with a maximum 3 night limit. You can also obtain wilderness camping permits for Holua and Paliku areas of the park at the park headquarters.
Sunrise Reservations
![Haleakala-Summit-Sunrise-Crater-Clouds-1224 Summit Sunrise Crater Clouds](https://www.haleakalamaui.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Haleakala-Summit-Sunrise-Crater-Clouds-1224-259x300.jpg)
To help control crowd sizes and ensure visitor safety during sunrise, the National Park instituted a sunrise reservation system in early 2017. Reservations are required to enter the Summit District between the hours of 3-7am. You can reserve your sunrise parking spot at Recreation.gov for only $1.50. Visitors can reserve a space up to 60 days in advance. On average, reservations fill up a few weeks in advance. If you’re planning to travel to the summit during your Maui vacation, be sure to make your sunrise reservation at least 2-3 weeks before your trip.
Though you can explore the summit on your own, a guided tour of Haleakala is the best option for most travelers. Choosing a tour for sunrise lets you relax and enjoy the incredible experience of Haleakala National Park. Guided tours include hotel pickups, expert narration and, for sunrise tours, a full breakfast.

Haleakalā Crater
Spectacular, humbling, awe-inspiring, grand—myriad superlatives are often bandied about to describe Maui’s famed volcano, Haleakalā.
And is it any wonder?
Haleakala Crater looms 10,023 feet above the Pacific Ocean , taking up three-quarters of Maui’s 727 square miles. Haleakala sunrise inspire 1.5 million visitors annually. Its ascent takes trekkers through 6 of the world’s 14 climate zones , while its depression was deemed the quietest place on the planet by acoustic experts, who found that its ambient sound levels were “near the very threshold of human hearing.” The entirety of the park, which comprises 33,265 acres, holds more endangered species than any other U.S. National Park . Its summit is considered one of the leading destinations in the world for observing and monitoring astronomical wonders. Designated “the sublimest spectacle” Mark Twain had ever seen—and a place of “incomparable grandeur” by The Call of the Wild’s Jack London—Haleakalā might not be one of the world’s seven wonders but it ought to be: Maui’s giant, majestic shield volcano is nothing short of astonishing.
Whether you’re dreaming up your Valley Isle vacation or simply gathering facts about one of the world’s largest “dormant” volcanoes, here’s the lowdown on Maui’s biggest bulwark and why it receives endless awe and praise.

Shaka Guide's Sunset and Stargazing Haleakala Tour Itinerary
December 03, 2023
Shaka Guide
Standing at an elevation of more than 10,000 feet, Haleakala is the world’s largest dormant volcano.
This national park is home to some of the most magnificent sunrise and sunset views.
Perhaps that’s where this volcano got its name? Haleakala means house of the sun in Hawaiian!
Whether you plan to visit Haleakala for sunrise, sunset, or anytime in between, Shaka Guide is your perfect companion with turn-by-turn directions, places to explore, and interesting stories and Hawaiian legends.
With over 60 audio points, a variety of hikes, and many lookouts, plan on spending about 4-6 hours driving to the summit and back.
![haleakala hike tour sunset haleakala tour stops](https://shakablog.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/shakablog/2MyPNl78gkGOYDXthMdgowxXul3LTQXjVnFSsahy.webp)
MID-AFTERNOON
The sun begins to set at around 5:30 in the winter and 7:00 p.m. in the summer.
On this tour, you’ll make a bunch of stops on your way up to the summit, so you can expect to spend 4-6 hours, depending on what you do.
Keep this in mind if you want to reach the summit for sunset. We recommend you start the tour around noon.
Also, if you’re staying in West Maui (the resort areas of Kaanapali and Lahaina) it’s about a two-hour drive to Haleakala.
Stop in Pukalani Town
Approximate time: 15 minutes
Make a quick stop here for some snacks and water. There is no food once you’re in the park.
Makawao Town
Approximate time: 1 hour
![haleakala hike tour makawao town signboard](https://shakablog.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/shakablog/EUrfMCx0VPJwHMJT8HCEJfoXFtDg2Q3IGNCAxyEJ.webp)
Just before Haleakala is a charming little town named Makawao.
Makawao is dubbed the biggest little town in Upcountry Maui and has its roots in the cattle industry.
In recent years, Makawao has evolved into a charming art town where you will find galleries and workshops of local artists, many with hawaii-inspired themes, as well as lots of tasty local food.
Hosmer Grove
Approximate time: 30 minutes
Hosmer Grove is located just outside the national park entrance at an elevation of 6,800 feet.
Here you will see trees from all around the world, including:
- juniper and fir from North America
- cedar and seigi pine from Japan and
- eucalyptus trees from Australia
This is a short, relaxing, half-mile loop trail. It’s a great spot to stop and breathe in the fresh air from all the foliage around you.
It’s also a completely different landscape from the ones you’ll see later in the tour.
![haleakala hike tour download shaka guide](https://shakablog.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/shakablog/MJlpw6zBjPB9v4g9lpEZOyAKpVEVdDkAgCPLkgKX.webp)
Halemau'u Crater Hike
This 8-mile trek is actually rated hard, but we suggest you just hike the first mile, then turn around the way you came.
You’ll still get a great view of a crater rim in the condensed version and you'll have more time for the rest of the activities on this tour!
Leleiwi Overlook
![haleakala hike tour overlook from leleiwi](https://shakablog.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/shakablog/UNiPmNnL1ZVVfbDmQCPDQph4jH7m7Ho3zXo7nI6s.webp)
Head in the clouds? It will be at this overlook. Most visitors pass up Leleiwi Overlook but in our opinion, it’s actually one the best on the mountain!
At the lookout, watch as clouds roll by. In one moment, the fog will be so dense you can barely see the terrain around you, in the next, it will clear giving you a panoramic view of the crater. It’s truly a sight to behold!
Kalahaku Overlook
At this overlook, you’ll see the crater floor from a completely different perspective. It’s definitely worth a stop!
Pa Ka’oao Trail
This mini hike starts at the visitor center and takes you to an overlook with a great view of the crater.
The walk is just .5 miles, and it’s well worth it. If you’re thinking to yourself, “another overlook?” Yes, but we promise -- this one has great views!
Pro tip! The nearby visitor center is a great spot to use the restroom.
Sliding Sands Trail
As you make your way back from the summit, you can return to the visitor center parking lot to hike Sliding Sands Trail.
It is a rigorous 11-mile hike, but we recommend you just hike to the first switchback or until you get tired.
You don’t need to travel far to see the expansive view of the massive crater open up before you!
When you are ready to return, just retrace your steps back the same way you came.
If you plan on doing the whole hike, or a large portion of it, remember to bring water.
The area isn’t shaded and you’ll be walking for a long time.
NOTE: we recommend you do this hike during the day.
Watch the Sunset atop Red Hill - Summit
Approximate time: 20 minutes
![haleakala hike tour haleakala](https://shakablog.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/shakablog/R152u3K63Ou4OPp7oREetgK4KzrbpK5AwBpiqnIj.webp)
About a minute past the visitor center at the end of the road, you’ll find an overlook called Pu‘u‘ula‘ula or Red Hill.
This is the actual summit of Mount Haleakala at 10,023 feet above sea level.
From here, you can watch as the sun sets for the night into the arid, mars-like landscape of Haleakala.
Drive Down The Mountain
Approximate time: 45 minutes
As you descend the mountain we’ll tell you more stories and legends about the sacred Hawaiian volcano you’ve just explored.
There are only two stops on the return trip — a viewpoint and Upcountry Maui.
If it’s past sunset and dark out, you’ll want to skip these spots.
Final Viewpoint
Approximate time: 5 minutes
As we make our way to the bottom of the mountain there is a lookout that offers one final glimpse of Maui.
Feel free to pull over for a quick view or to snap a photo.
Optional Trip to Upcountry Farms
As we near the base of Haleakala, we will approach Upcountry Maui. In Upcountry Maui there are a couple of interesting farms in the area.
Here you can find the Ali’i Lavender Farm, a great place to unwind and enjoy the fragrance of lavender.
For plant lovers, there’s Kula Botanical Garden. And, for cheese enthusiasts check out Surfing Goat Dairy.
This spot has a petting zoo and sells gourmet goat cheese and specialty items like chocolate goat cheese truffles.
Finally, you can check Maui Winery which is famous for its pineapple wine.
PLEASE NOTE: many of these shops close by 5 p.m. If you’ve stayed to watch the sunset, you can always visit these another day.
When you’re in Hawaii, we ask that you act respectfully toward the locals, land, and wildlife. Please pick up your trash; never touch any marine life, plants, or other animals; and avoid spots that are unsafe. Hawaii’s natural resources are precious, it’s up to all of us to help preserve these resources.

14 Amazing Maui Hiking Trails
Here are Maui’s hiking trails you’ll want to enjoy during your trip to this island.
1. Haleakala – Sliding Sands Trail
The Haleakala Sliding Sands Trail is situated inside Haleakala National Park in Upcountry Maui. It is rated as a pretty challenging hike but is also widely revered as being worth the challenge.
The entire trip runs for about 5 miles, with the first 4 miles going down 2800 feet to the valley floor.
The final mile is an arduous hike-climb up Haleakala’s crater rim which is where the real challenge is. However, the views from the rim when you finally make it up are absolutely worth this hike at Mount Haleakala.
For less experienced hikers, it’s advised that you take a hiking pole and hiking boots, and essential items like water and sunscreen , and make sure you have a healthy meal before going on this Maui hiking trail in Haleakalā National Park.
2. Pipiwai Trail – Oheo Gulch
Situated above the Seven Sacred Pools (traditionally referred to as “Oheo Gulch”), Pipiwai Trail is one of the most beautiful hikes you can find in Maui.
With a slight elevation of 650ft, the trail runs a four-mile roundtrip hike that takes from 2.5 hours to about 5 hours to complete. The timing depends on how lost in nature you get and the Oheo Gulch has lots of natural beauty to ensnare anyone.
From the majestic waterfalls to the dense bamboo forests to the calm streams that invite passers-by to take a dip; there will be something to feast your eyes on at any point in time during this Maui hike.

3. Twin Falls
Twin Falls is a privately owned out-and-back trail that runs for about 2.4 km. Rated as a moderate hike, it is located close to Haiku and sees a lot of traffic throughout the year.
Primarily, it is used for nature trips as well as hiking . It features a gorgeous waterfall that many hikers have found pleasure in simply standing under.
However, the waterfall can bring too much water to the trail in the rainy season . Because of this, the upper trail is sometimes closed in the rainy season. This trail is dog-friendly, but dogs must be kept on leash.
If you want one of the best kid friendly hikes in Maui, just do the trail leading to the lower falls! It is only .25 miles and is very easy. It is located at mile marker 2 on the Hana Highway. It is a very easy hike with incredible scenery for everyone to enjoy.
4. Waihee Ridge Trail
Situated near Wailuku, another one of the top hikes in Maui is Waihe’e Ridge Trail, an out-and-back trail that extends for about 4 miles in the West Maui Mountains.
Rated as difficult, the trail features a waterfall as well as multiple activity options. You can go ridge-line hiking, enjoying the marvelous views of the great valley and the flora it contains. The trail is also suitable for trail runners of all skill levels.
It is the perfect hike for dogs, as hikers are permitted to bring along their dogs for the hike. However, they must be kept on a leash always.
5. Hosmer Grove & Supply Trails
Related to the Sliding Sands Trail by proximity, Hosmer Grove Trail is another trail that can be found in Haleakala National Park in East Maui.
Unlike the Sliding Sands, this one is less challenging. However, Homer Grove gives hikers an enjoyable hike with beautiful scenery.
On this simple hike, you will be able to see some of the famous sandalwood trees in Hawaii. You will also find your way to the Supply Trail, an alternate trail that takes veers from Hosmer Grove and leads to a small forest of trees that are locally found in Hawaii but were brought by a foreigner in 1910.
It is another one of the fairly easy hikes on Maui.
6. Kings Gardens on Maui
Located in the old and secluded Kings Garden just outside Haiku, this beautiful trail features a picturesque garden and a breathtaking waterfall. It was rated the best hike on Maui for waterfall hiking adventures.
Open only to a few people every year, visitors to this amazing place are taken on a guided, moderately difficult hike through the gardens and up to the waterfall, getting a chance to look at fauna and flora that can only be found in this beautiful and ancient rainforest.
It is one of the best Maui guided hiking tours you’ll find!
7. Kapalua Coastal Trail
Kapalua Coastal Trail is a short hike that runs for 2 miles with very light traffic and an elevation of 46 meters. It is situated near Lahaina and offers some of the most scenic views. It is accessible to people of all skill levels and can be used for multiple activities.
Not only is hiking done here, but you can also bring kids here on nature trips, go trail running, or just hang out by Kapalua Beach.
Enjoy views of the forest as you walk, or look out to the coast, where the water meets the sky in the most beautiful and magnificent views possible.
It is one of the best Maui walking trails along the Pacific Ocean. Take a leisurely stroll at sea level with this walking path.
8. Iao Valley State Park
One of the kid friendly hikes Maui has to offer is the Iao Needle at Iao Valley State Park. It is a short hike that is actually paved and very easy to do. It does have some stairs but has places where you can rest if you need to.
It is a 0.6 mile trail in the West Maui Forest Reserve that is quite beautiful. There is also a swimming hole to enjoy, gardens, and much more! It’s one of the top West Maui mountains hiking trails for sure!
It is definitely one of the best Maui hikes for families.
Read my review of the Iao Needle hike with kids
9. Waikamoi Ridge Trail
Waikamoi Ridge Trail is another one of the Maui kid friendly hikes along the Road to Hana. It is located by mile marker 9 and is less than a mile long.
It can be slippery after it has rained, so be sure to prepare for mud and wear good shoes. There are parts that offer a paved path and it usually has a nice breeze too! The Waikamoi Ridge Trail is a relatively easy hike, so if you want to enjoy hiking through a forest, this is one of the places to hike in Maui!
10. Pali Trail
If you are looking for a challenging hike, try the Lahaina Pali Trail. The trail starts at two locations, each offering a different view and challenge.
It is a rocky trail that doesn’t offer much shade and has a lot of dry grass and lava rocks. But the views of the island and ocean are worth it!
If you want to do some difficult hiking in Maui Hawaii, the Pali Trail is for you!
11. Hoapili Trail
If you are in South Maui, head to the Hoapili Trail. It is a moderate hike that is around 6 miles round trip. The trail begins at La Perouse Bay and you will head to the Hanamanioa Point Lighthouse at Kanaio Beach before heading back.
This is one of the best trails in Maui for those wanting to be by the ocean. It does have lava rocks so be sure to wear good hiking boots, but it is a great hike to enjoy whether you do the entire hike or just a part of the trail.
12. Nakalele Blowhole
Another one of the West Maui hikes to enjoy is the Nakalele Blowhole. It is not a very long hike per se, but I think it’s worth it to include it in our list.
It does have some pretty tough terrain but it will be so much fun for your kids to see water shooting out of the blowhole.
You can’t go wrong with this simple West Maui hiking!
13. Hosmer Grove Trail
For another short hike, try out the Hosmer Grove Trail. It is close to the summit at Haleakala National Park and is only .6 miles for the entire loop trail.
It is one of the best hikes in Maui for family because it is so short and is great to see some birds and unique trees and plants you might not find anywhere else!
14. Ohai Loop Trail
The Ohai Loop Trail takes about an hour or so and is only 1.2 miles. It’s another one of the top Maui hikes for families located in West Maui.
It has a bench along the way so you can stop and enjoy the wonderful ocean views.
If you are looking for easy hikes in Maui to stretch your legs after driving, the Ohai Loop Trail is the perfect one for you.
Maui Hiking FAQs
Absolutely! In fact, Maui has some of the best hiking in Hawaii! From Haleakala Crater to trails off the Road to Hana, you won’t be disappointed with the top Maui hikes.
If you are planning on doing a lot of hiking on Maui, I’d suggest staying near Kihei or Paia. These areas will get you closer to the Road to Hana and Haleakala than staying in Lahaina or Kaanapali.
Sometimes. It’s really important to check online before you make the drive as 7 Sacred Pools (aka Oheo Gulch) is often closed after rain or stormy weather.
Twin Falls trail is probably the easiest hiking in Maui and offers an awesome waterfall to see! It’s one of the best waterfall hikes on the Road to Hana.

They climbed Haleakalā to survive being hunted

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Two Maui visitors who were carjacked and robbed at gunpoint had to run, hide and hike for their lives to the top of Haleakalā. Itʻs an ordeal authorities did not reveal publicly until KHON2 started asking questions. Now the victims are speaking out to warn others about danger on Maui.

Alex and Justina Lucero were on Maui for music gigs earlier in June and decided to use their free day, June 4, to explore Paia and Hana.
They went to the parks, went on a couple trails on the bamboo forest and walked to a few waterfalls.
“Everybody was was wonderful. All the locals and all the tourists that we ran into were great.”
A few people suggested they check out a black sand beach toward the end of the road to Hana.
They said GPS took them through Kaupō where they noticed a road closed sign that was pushed off to the side.
“And we were told earlier that day by some local, yeah, you can go all the way through. It used to be closed, but it’s not anymore. So we weren’t suspicious of anything like that,” Justina said. “And we were told that, you know, the locals there will use the same road, and if they come up behind you, just pull off to the side and let them pass, because they’re going to be not looking at the same scenery the way that you will.”
So when a truck pulled out of a driveway just after they passed, they pulled off the road and Alex waved the truck on.
Minutes later as they got around a blind curve the truck was coming back toward them, stopping in a spot that was only big enough for one vehicle.
“He jumps out and comes right at us with the gun and stops us in the middle of the street.”
Alex said he was wearing a mask, a hood, a sweatshirt.
“Leave all valuables, leave the keys, empty your pockets, empty your pockets, leave everything in the car, and start walking that way now.”
They did what he told them to and left their phones behind to set off on foot back toward Hana.
Then they heard the car start behind them.
“Now he’s coming towards us. So we very, very quickly went from a fast walk to a sprint up this gulch.”
They had a choice to make, stay on the road theyʻre being chased on, head toward the water, or head up the hill–that hill being Haleakalā.
They hopped a guardrail and hid behind boulders in the nick of time.
“He’s yelling for us to show ourselves. Yeah, I’ll find you. I’ll find you. And he, at some point, he counts down from, I don’t know if it was 10 or I heard him at five, so I don’t know down from 10 or to count down from five. And at the end of it, he shot the gun off. And so we knew it was loaded. We knew he meant business.”
When they thought it couldnʻt get any worse, their pursuer was joined by a white multi-passenger van with a taxi sign.
“They rendezvous. They came up with some type of they, they had some type of interaction this vehicle and our rental car, and we knew at that point that this guy was in on finding us. Now there’s, well, both driving up and down the road slowly looking for us.”
They continued darting up the mountain, both in swimming suits, her in slippers. And nobody to help.
During a break, they noticed that there was a third vehicle pacing the stretch of road, getting out with flashlights and even putting a drone in the sky.
“This feeling of being hunted and not knowing the extent of, you know, the, what they would do, what they wanted and who he had at his fingertips to help.”
Throughout the night, they climbed higher and higher as the air grew colder. They drank from a small waterfall.
Then at daybreak they saw tour helicopters but the helicopters did not see them. They saw two men on horseback with dogs but, unsure whether they were help or hunter, they continued on without initiating contact.
Over a ridgeline they saw a big white structure and three people. As they waved for help, a park ranger came to their rescue.
Their ordeal was finally at an end, more than 24 hours after it began.
Law enforcement pondered who their tormentor could be.
“At this point he had a suspect in mind who fits the profile, who fits the the heinous act, because he is such a menace. That’s what his that’s what he said.”
The following week, MPD arrested Christopher Helmer on warrants for a separate kidnapping and terroristic threatening from May.
The Luceros were told that Helmer was caught in their rental car, a silver Mustang and that he and others had tried to use their credit cards all over Maui.
Helmer was indicted on Friday for robbery, firearms, car theft and drug charges in connection to the Lucerosʻ carjacking.
Maui prosecutor Andrew Martin told KHON2, “I want to applaud the tremendous efforts of the Maui Police Department and our Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys in identifying, apprehending, and indicting this defendant. His victims have endured harrowing experiences and we look forward to bringing him to justice. “
“The successful capture and arrest of Christopher Helmer, who was implicated in multiple incidents across the island, is a testament to the dedication and unwavering commitment to upholding justice by our personnel. …with Helmer in custody, we want to reassure our residents and visitors that they can take comfort in knowing that this individual is no longer a threat to public safety,” MPD said in a statement.
Helmer remains in custody.
The Luceros said they were told to share their story so people can beware.
