The city's historic temples and palaces, such as the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, provide stunning backdrops for architectural and cultural photography. Bangkok's street markets, street food vendors, and colorful tuk-tuks create dynamic settings for street and documentary photography. The Chao Phraya River, with its bustling boat traffic, offers a picturesque backdrop for capturing the city's dynamic waterways. So so lucky to have Suri as the photographer for my 50th birthday celebrations. I wanted a mix of directed shots with the beautiful Praya Palazzo as a backdrop, and candid shots of my guests enjoying themselves. I love the photos! Suri has just the right personality - friendly without being intrusive, and he has the patience and initiative to capture the shots to tell a story. My 20+ guests and I were very comfortable with Suri and he was able to organize the group photos efficiently. He speaks English well and I felt very reassured right from the beginning. He even helped me to find a painting artist - what a helpful individual. Don't hesitate to click to hire Suri. -Molly View Photographer profile
I'd like to thank our guide for the work he produced: the photos were magnificent, full of intensity, and yet done with the utmost simplicity. He listened to our wishes and above all managed to get our teenagers on board. An unforgettable experience in some of Bangkok's most magical places. Special mention for the photos with the tuk tuk. Thank you !!!! -Stephanie View Photographer profile
Suri was incredible! He was so kind and told us about the history of the places we were visiting in Bangkok during the photoshoot! The photos are beautiful and contain memories that will last a lifetime! If we do family photos in Bangkok in the future, we will definitely book Suri again! Thank you so much, Suri! -Laura View Photographer profile
Siri was so friendly and accommodating. He shot such natural photos of my 8 bachelor party, which can be a lot to handle. Patient, excellent skills, and funny - highly recommend -Michael View Photographer profile
Suri, you are amazing! Thank you for taking the time to make our photoshoot an unforgettable experience. Suri was patient with helping us pose. He really took his time to get the perfect shot. He also was knowledgeable about the temples we were shooting at and that was a nice touch. He went above and beyond. The pictures he took of my fiance and me are timeless. Thank you, Suri! I recently had the pleasure of working with an outstanding photographer - Suri in Bangkok for a personal photoshoot, and the experience surpassed all my expectations. As someone new to professional photography, I appreciated the guidance and expertise provided every step of the way. From the outset, the photographer demonstrated an impeccable eye for detail, assisting with selecting outfits that perfectly complemented the diverse urban and natural backdrops of our chosen locations. His skill in helping me find the right poses added a professional polish to each shot, ensuring that I looked my best from every angle. His knowledge of Bangkok's picturesque locales was invaluable, steering us toward settings that provided a dynamic range of aesthetics, from the glimmering cityscapes to serene greenery. Suri did an amazing job for our Bangkok photoshoot. The photos turned out better than we could have hoped for. He suggested fantastic locations and recommended timings for perfect natural lighting. The colors are so vibrant and he captured natural poses. He took us around the city during our shoot and went the extra mile to make sure we had plenty of good shots. We are very appreciative of him and he did great work. -Abhay View Photographer profile
Suri was fantastic. He was professional and friendly. He was great with our children who aren't fans of pausing for pictures. Our pictures are an amazing memory that we will cherish forever. Anytime we return to Thailand we hope to schedule another session with Suri. -Lisa View Photographer profile
We were very happy to have Mr.Suri take our photo. We wanted to leave a memory of Bangkok where we lived for three years, so we asked him to take photos of our family in familiar streets and shops. Mr.Suri understood our intention and took a number of beautiful photos that brought out our natural expressions against the backdrop of nameless places. I noticed that his personality was coming out in the photos, and when I saw the photos, I felt like I had seen a beautiful movie and tears flowed. I will recommend him to my friends. Thank you! -H.I View Photographer profile

Bangkok is a cultural treasure with many beautiful temples that are a must-visit if you are looking for an enriching experience. But the choice is hard, as Bangkok has more than 400 temples. So, which one to pick? Luckily, we have made a top 5 pick of the best temples or ‘wats’ to visit in Bangkok. 1️⃣ Wat Arun Ratchawararam (Temple Of Dawn) — An ancient temple dating back to the Ayutthaya period and considered a Royal Temple of King Rama II with a stupa considered one of the most beautiful and gigantic stupas in that era. 2️⃣ Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Ratchaworamahawihan (Wat Pho) — Home of the Reclining Buddha, with various interesting ancient Thai cultural murals around the temple. 3️⃣ Wat Saket Ratchaworamahawihan (Phu Khao Thong) — One of the famous highlights of this temple is its spiral staircase, which has 344 steps. 4️⃣ Wat Trai Mit Witthayaram Worawihan — This temple is home to the solid gold Sukhothai-style Buddha called the seated Phra Phuttha Maha Suwana Patimakon, known as the world’s largest golden Buddha statue. 5️⃣ Wat Benchamabophit (The Marble Temple) — As its name states, the temple’s ordination hall was constructed of marble imported from Italy. 📸 Captured by Suriyathepjuti in Bangkok, Thailand 🌐 www.locallens.com ▶️ #locallensphotographers . . . #bangkokthailand #bangkokcity #bangkoktrip #bangkoktravel #travelphotography #travelandleisure #bangkokspirit #beautiful_bangkok #thailand_allshots #thailandtrip #thailandtravel #adayinthailand #thailandinstagram #amazingthailand #bangkokphotographer

The best photography spots in bangkok, thailand.
- 5 January 2024
- Asia , Photography
Thailand was one of my first destinations as a full time travel photographer. During my first months in Thailand, I stayed several weeks in Bangkok to find the best photography spots. In this list you’ll find my favourite spots. With these spots, I hope to motivate you and inspire you to create the most beautiful photos during your time in Bangkok.

Where to stay.
- If you’re a first time traveler to Bangkok, it can be overwhelming to find the right accommodation. There are many good areas, but it totally depends on your plans in the city.
- My personal favourite area: Around the areas of Asok and Phrom Phong. You’ll find proper hotels, parks, malls and great public transportation options.
- For party and nightlife: Around Khao San Road
- For the famous tourist sights: Around Silom Road
- Nice riverside hotels: Around ICONSIAM mall.
- Conrad Bangkok ($$) – Conrad is part of the Hilton brand and known as one of their top properties. The rooms are spacious, offer a view and there’s a big pool to cool down during the hot days. One of my favourite things is that everything in the room is smart. Electric blinds, toilet seats, you name it. You can find a room in this 5 star hotel for about $160 a night, which makes it one of the cheapest Conrad hotels to stay at.
- Millennium Bangkok ($$) – Just like Conrad, Millennium is part of the Hilton brand. This hotel has amazing riverside views and is located next to the IconSiam mall. I spent some nights here for Christmas and it was one of my best experiences. The breakfast buffet is one of the biggest I’ve ever seen in a hotel. The price range is similar to Conrad, starting from about $150 a night.
- Ariston Hotel ($) – Looking for a cheap place to stay while still being in a good area? Ariston might be a great fit. This hotel offers free breakfast, a swimming pool and is located close to a BTS station. The rooms are nothing special, but I’ve used it a couple of times and have always been satisfied with my experience. Room rates start from about $40 a night.
Getting around is cheap and easy. The public transportation system is very advanced – except the buses – but hey, they’re a great experience! If you’re with two or more, the taxi will usually be your cheapest option. Always make sure they use the metered rate!
Bangkok is supposed to be the city with the biggest China Town in the world. It offers loads of good photo opportunities at day and at night. The best way to explore the area is to get lost in the streets. You’ll find temples, Chinese billboards, loads of jewellery stores and a lot of different nations all in one place.
I haven’t been able to take my bucket list shot in China Town. At the beginning of Yaowarat Road, the most famous street of China Town, you’ll find the Gateway Arch. The gate to China Town. It’s also known as the Odeon Circle, and it’s a beautiful spot to start or end your China Town trip.
Many photographers have been able to capture beautiful light trails of cars around the roundabout, with the Gateway Arch as the main subject of their image. To achieve this result, you have to enter a parking garage . Without a car, you won’t be able to enter this parking lot. The security guards have refused entrance to numerous photographers, and it doesn’t seem like you can easily convince them to take photos. I took my loss and went for a lower angle instead.
How to get to China Town in Bangkok?
The most common way is to take the metro line until Hua Lamphong, walk to the main gate and take it from there. Once you’re done you can leave by taking the metro again at Sam Yot or Sanam Chai. Of course this works vice versa as well! The other option is to take a taxi/Grab, but make sure to get dropped off at a strategical point, so you won’t be stuck in a traffic jam. This link leads you to the Odeon Circle, a good starting point for your day trip!
The Trains Of Bangkok
Photographing the trains of Bangkok has been popular for a while and I have to admit that it was my number one favourite place to shoot in Bangkok. You can find wonderful green spots in traditional areas where people don’t see too many tourists. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to shoot some daily life of the people living along the tracks. It felt like the best escape from the crowded and polluted streets of Bangkok. Again, I loved it here.
How to get there?
It’s a bit hard to get to the best locations. Of course a taxi would help you out. Try to get dropped off around the Wat Sai station and walk along the track until you find a place you’re happy with! More on a budget? Take the BTS until Wutthakat and walk southwards until the Chom Thong station. This is one of the famous stations to shoot, but not the best one in my opinion. Instead: walk southbound next to the tracks until you find your interesting places. This is a link to my favourite station and area.
Bring a smartphone with 4G/5G, go to Google Maps and tap on the station when you’re around. It will give you a timetable with the estimated time of arrival of the train. This can save you huge amounts of time while you’re waiting in the heat. It also turned out to be pretty accurate. Of course there’s more to shoot than just the trains, but most of the people want to have at least some decent train shots when they’re coming here!
The Skyline of Bangkok
Just as any other huge city in Southeast Asia, Bangkok offers some amazing skyline views. In my opinion, the best views can be found from the IconSiam mall. Head up to the Starbucks on the 7th floor, take a coffee and embrace the views on the rooftop terrace. There are some fancy bars and restaurants on the 5th floor as well, but the views are best on the 7th. Keep in mind that this is not a sunset spot, but you’ll have the sun in your back shooting the skyline. This gives you the best view possible of lebua at State Tower, as seen in the Hangover pt II. It also gives you a view of King Power Mahanakhon, the famous tower that offers a skywalk. If you look closely, you can see it on the picture above. If you fancy a lower point of view, you’ll have multiple options as well. Have a look next to the river or visit the terraces of the first floor, there are endless possibilities!
There are a couple of ways to get here. There is a BTS stop, but it requires you to transfer at Krung Thon Buri and it’s quite a detour. You could also take the boat at Sathon pier, which requires you to stop at the Saphan Taksin stop. I prefer this last option, to have a small trip on the river as well. Sometimes there’s a free shuttle boat for IconSiam (especially on the weekends), but you can take the regular ones as well. Before you take the boat or once you return at Saphan Taksin, you can take a walk through the area too. It brings you close to lebua at State Tower and it’s where I took the close up shot! Quick link to the IconSiam mall? Click here!
Street Life of Bangkok
Bangkok is known as a city with bustling street life. That’s why I love to check out the open garages, peak hour traffic light situations, or people running their street food businesses. For this kind of photography, you don’t need a certain location. It’s all about keeping your eyes open, create your own compositions and shoot what makes you happy!
There’s one important side note: if you want to take a picture of someone and his face is recognisable, make sure he or she (be extra careful with ladies) agrees to take a picture. Don’t harm people’s privacy and make sure they understand what you’re doing. If they agree, you should show them the picture after it’s taken, or send them the photo after you’ve edited it. I’m not the biggest fan of giving payment. If it’s a person with a shop, you could buy something to support their business.
The Big Golden Buddha
The newest spot in this list is the giant Buddha, located on the east side of Menam River. It’s better known as Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen. You came here for this, am I right? This 69m tall Buddha statue has just been finished in 2021 and is visible from a lot of viewpoints in Bangkok. This makes it an extremely interesting location to shoot, with both tele lenses and wide angle options. The best view of Wat Paknam is in my opinion from Tha Phra station, but there are other interesting spots as well! I didn’t get to visit the other locations, but with some Instagram research it must be possible to find the spots.
The best way to enter the area of Wat Paknam, is by taking the MRT to Tha Phra station. This station has multiple levels and will give you amazing views with the condo’s behind the statue. Make sure you bring your tele lens (at least 200mm) for this! Of course you should head closer as well and you’ll find many other options to shoot this magnificent statue. Click here for Google Maps directions.
King Power Mahanakhon
This famous tower is a tower you can’t miss during your time in Bangkok. I don’t say that you have to climb it, but it will give you a stunning view over the city! I didn’t climb the tower myself, but I did walk around to get the best shot. Again, I wanted to enter a parking garage to shoot it with the BTS, but they didn’t let me enter it.
The best way to enter the area of Wat Paknam, is by taking the BTW to Chong Nonsi . This station lies right underneath the King Power MahaNakhon tower, so you’ll be at the right spot! If you have a car and want to try to get into the parking garage, head here . In terms of lens recommendations, a wide angle like a 16-35mm is probably your best bet to get the full tower in frame! If you climb the tower or want to shoot details like I did, bring a tele lens like a 70-200.
Wat Arun Temple
The beautiful Wat Arun temple can not be missed. The wonderful temple lits up every night and with the sun setting behind, you can expect wonderful scenes. Just make sure you arrive around 5pm! If you’re not able to visit this place at sunset, make sure you visit it in the morning as the sun will be in your back. During the bright afternoon, you have to deal with hard shadows and it just won’t look as nice. If you only get the chance to visit the temple during daytime, make sure you visit the temple itself!
Visiting the temple is nice and I highly recommend, but if you want the pictures as you’ve seen them online, you should head to the other side of the river. When I visited in December 2021, they were building a new temple on the place I took my shot, but we were still allowed to take pictures. Another option could be visiting one of the Wat Arun-view restaurants. You’ll find lots of them. Extra recommendation: Take a walk around the area right after sunset. There are some alleys giving you wonderful street shots with Wat Arun in the back!
Ancient City
Thanks to Instagram, this place gained a lot of interest over the last years. Ancient City is a Thailand shaped park where you can travel through the cultural highlights of the country within a day. You’ll find temples as in Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, but also Bangkok. Some of the most unique creatures are captured above. The park is so huge that you’ll need a bike (included in ticket price) or a golf cart to see all the hotspots. Make sure you take your time here and don’t just visit for ‘the shots’!
The best way to reach this spot is by BTS and Songtaew. Songwhat? Let me translate: Song = Two, Taew = Bench. Two benches. Still no clue? You will find them everywhere in Thailand and once you understand the system, it’s a very very convenient way of travelling from one place to another, especially if there is a shortage of public transportation available. They will wait for you at the end of Kheha station and tell them you want to visit Ancient City. You hop in and check your Google Maps when you arrive in front of the place. You press the stop button, pay 10B and you’re good to go. On the way back it’s a bit harder as you have to cross the road, stop a songtaew and from there it’s the same game until you reach Kheha BTS Station. Easy as that!
Bhumibol Bridge
Well, this one is a bit controversial. If you came here to find how to find the classic Instagram photography spot of the Bhumibol Bridge, I have to disappoint you. Here’s why. The Bhumibol Bridge is a golden bridge, or actually two bridges, having two huge pillars each. You can see them from many rooftop bars in Bangkok and they get lit up at night with some beautiful lights. Getting to the photography spot is a shared secret between local photographers. You need private transportation and being at the spot is not safe. I’ve been there, but won’t recommend you to go to the same place. Also, the sky usually gets polluted so most people will use a sky correction to make it more impressive. The photos taken below were taken while driving the bridges (as a passenger) with my camera out of the window! To get the best shots, I would recommend to visit the neighbourhoods around the bridge. You could bring your drone, something I’d love to do on my next visit! Be creative!
Bonus: Salt Flats of Phetchaburi
If you have a lot of time in Bangkok or if you’re traveling towards the islands after, why not hop on a train to Phetchaburi first? The salt flats are beautiful, especially when captured with a drone. Besides that, there are other cool sights to capture, such as the Tham Khao Luang cave or Wat Khao Wang . Head over to my post where I tell you all you need to know about visiting the salt flats of Phetchaburi.

I am travelling to Bangkok and I would like to take a picture of Mahanakhon building from another tall building in the surrounding area. Can you give me some advice? Searching in Google Maps is difficult.
Hi Marcos, thanks for your reply! I’ve written about the parking garage, that would be your best bet. Try to find yourself a driver that’s willing to drive into the parking garage and you’ll get a perfect shot like this one. (not my shot) The Amara hotel has a rooftop bar and a great view on King Power Mahakanon as well. I guess most buildings are condominiums or offices, which make it hard to get a great view if you don’t know anyone there. My best advice would be the parking garages or finding hotels with rooftop bars in the surrounding area!

Travel photography weekend in amazing Bangkok
Bangkok , the amazing and vibrant capital of Thailand has many identities, from a holy city to the city of Sin 😅. The mix between the fantastic temples and history with the modern city with incredible energy is, as well, one contrast that makes Bangkok very special.
That post does not intend to provide a holistic view of the tens of attractions and things to do and see in Bangkok but just highlight 7 places or activities not to miss if you’re e passionate about travel or if you’re a photographer or just a visitor with interest for travel photography .
Visit the Grand Palace
While the victim of its magnificence (crowded with tourists), the Grand Palace and it’s royal chapel Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) are absolutely a must-see place in Bangkok
If you like travel photography , the Wat Phra Kaew will provide you with endless opportunities …
The Golden Garuda sculptures around the chapel are incredible
and the amazing Golden Kinnari statues looks alive and ready to have a chat 😊
The Palace has been in permanent evolution under every Thai king so it is today a (great) patchwork of Thai, Khmer, Chinese, and even European architectural styles but my favorites as a photographer remain the amazing demon guardians statues everywhere.
Keep looking for perspectives on the amazing temples!
If you are a photographer or simply what to avoid the crowds, I strongly advise you to arrive before the opening and start around Wat Phra Kaew before the crowds of tourists arrived (even the statues look to have enough of those 😢😂).
Visit the Wat Pho
This is another must-see temple complex on the bank of the Chao Phraya River just south of the Grand Palace. The Wat Phra Chetuphon temple (or Wat Pho) is surrounding the of the amazing 46-meters (151 foot) long gold reclined buddha
That famous status that stares up at the beautiful ceiling is mind-blowing!
There are several beautiful Buddhas at the foot of the statue
Those are offering photographers like me that like shooting buddhas covered with gold leaf offerings beautiful pictures opportunities …
There is much more to see in the (huge) temple complex, especially the lines of gold, seated Buddhas, with beautiful wall and ceiling paintings.
As a photographer , the blend of gold and black Buddha statues with orange and saffron yellow robes are worth the visit on their own.
So, keep exploring the complex for more …
Visit the Wat Arun
Another classic must-see is Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn that sits on the western banks of the Chao Phraya River (just opposite to Wat Pho) in the old capital of Thonburi. That majestic white temple with five towering prangs (towers) is covered with vibrant porcelain and colorful ceramic tiles, many of which look like pieces of foliage
Like most major attractions, it’s best to go when it opens, before the buses of tourists arrive
Explore the river Khlongs
Tired of temples and or tourists 😳 ? Take a private long-tail boat tour and get for a few hours in the authentic canals (Khlongs)
You’ll discover people real life and beautiful travel photography opportunities like the many tiny floating boat shops all around
Enjoy Rooftops bars and restaurants!
There are many amazing rooftop bars and restaurants like the one below…
Those are obviously the place to be if you are looking for some parties (😎) but as well as a photographer paradise for sunset shooting…
For photographers , a tripod is not often allowed in most bars unfortunately so I advise you to bring a bean bag (buy rice on the market) to stabilize your camera. If you’re crazy about photography , become friends with the rooftop bar staff and negotiate access for sunrise shooting as well when it is closed 🤩…
If you’re trully a mad photographer like some guy I know, find people that know people to get access somehow to skyscrapers roofs (but stay safe 😉)
Explore a Floating market
While getting very touristic and honestly less traditional, floating markets remain however great places to visit like the famous Damnoen Saduak floating market below.
If you’re a photographer , this will offer endless travel photography and portrait opportunities.
Keep exploring …
There are obviously many other great places in Bangkok beyond the selection above like Wat Suthat temple, Chatuchak Weekend Market , Jim Thompson House Museum , Wat Traimit, Khao San Road bars, China Town, Lumpini Park, and much more but I’ll stop there for today …
If .like me, you love Thailand, check my post on the amazing Loy Krathong festival in Chiang Mai and Sukhothai. And yes, I do love shooting Buddhas 😂

Bangkok Photo Tours: Get The Best Shots In BKK
I have to admit, I’m not a great photographer. My camera makes my photos look good. Or rather, the camera helps make it look like I know what I’m doing. I spent a year and a half in Bangkok and took some amazing (in my own words) photos. Purely by accident, I assure you. See the bottom of this post for examples.
Part of the reason I love Bangkok so much is that it’s visually exciting . There is always something to see. There are always new angles to every street scene. Even on those cloudy and rainy days, there’s something about Bangkok that asks to be captured on film. Rainy days make for the perfect black and white shot.
If you want to get awesome photos in Bangkok, you have two options:
- Be an awesome photographer 😉
- Learn from amazing photographers 👍
If you’re like me and you choose the second option, a photography tour is a great idea. Especially if you’re new to the city. Photo tour operators know where to get the best shots and where you can find unique photo opportunities. Forget about shooting the same old landmarks. Go deep with someone who knows the city and understands the art of photography .
Photo Tours of Bangkok
The most successful photo tour operators make their clients look good. Clients that take good shots are more likely to get their photos noticed and shared. This, in turn, helps the tour guides as the cross-promotion gets them exposure for their business.
Photo tour guides offer advice and guidance that people like me need. Turn this down, push that button, zoom to here, don’t point at that. Unless you’re a pro, you need guidance. And if you’re not a local, you’re probably looking in the wrong places for the best shots.
If you’ve just landed in Bangkok and want to get the best bang for your buck with your camera, you can wander the streets (see option 1) or you can take a tour (option2).
Tim Russell Photography
I asked Tim of Tim Russell Photography some questions about getting the best photos and making the most of your photo tour in Bangkok.
Where is the best location for street photography in Bangkok?
It depends on what kind of street photography you want to pursue. A creative photographer can get great shots anywhere. Personally, I like the more traditional Bangkok areas , those that have kept their character & their street life – so for me, it’s Khlong Thoey , Chinatown & Talat Noi, Wongwian Yai , and Samrong . The extension of the BTS (Skytrain) is making areas like Samrong easier to get to and their long ‘isolation’ from the rest of Bangkok means they still have loads of character.
Stepping off the BTS into Samrong or Wongwian Yai is like going back in time.
What’s the most important thing that a photo tour operator does?
As someone who both runs photo tours and books them when I travel, the key thing is that the tour operator introduces photographers to areas that they might not otherwise find themselves. Or which they might not feel comfortable visiting alone, such as my Khlong Thoey ‘slum’ tour . Most clients are capable photographers who just want to get some interesting & original shots to go home with.
Some clients are beginners and so the tour operator should be able to offer technical guidance on camera settings & composition. The tour operator offers encouragement in overcoming shyness and approaching strangers. And I think it’s important that a photo tour operator should also be good company, a good storyteller , and have good local knowledge and contacts.
What kind of people take your tours? Where are they from?
People with a decent level of photography experience. It varies from experienced professionals to complete beginners! And I’ve had clients from the US, Australia, UK, Russia, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Canada, Germany, Holland, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore. Just about everywhere.
What do you offer over other tour operators in the city?
Not sure as I don’t look at what other operators are doing – I have my little niche and I stick to it. I offer good local knowledge, good camera skills, affordable rates and, I hope, 3-4 hours of good company .
Which is better, daytime or night photography?
All down to preference. Night photography is more of a challenge in terms of camera settings but with the streets of Bangkok being so active at night, and being a very safe place to wander around, this is a good city to try it out. But my tours happen during daytime as that’s when the markets I visit en route are busiest.
Best photo spots in the city?
See my answer to Q1! I’d say for first-time visitors to Bangkok, Chinatown ticks most boxes as it’s a good mix of temples, markets, busy streets and tiny hidden alleyways with lots going on.
Can you recommend a photo gallery of Thailand and Bangkok?
Street Photo Thailand is a really good local street photography collective. For more travel-oriented shots, there are loads of material on the usual places – 500px, Pinterest and Instagram.
What’s your favourite street photo of Bangkok?
Probably this one:
Khun Lem lives in the middle of the Khlong Thoey slum, and every inch of his body (or at least every inch that he’s been prepared to show me!) is tattooed. Although he looks quite intimidating he’s a lovely, gentle guy who is always happy to be photographed when he sees me walking by. A photo session with Mr Lem is always one of the highlights of the tour for my clients.
Tim’s Photo tours in Bangkok cost around US $140 per person for solo travellers. Groups get a better rate so it’s wise to try to get a few people together to take the price per person down. Tours last around 4 hours and include a post-tour photo critique.

Portfolio Therapy
Dennie Cody and Duangkamon Khattiya are professional travel and lifestyle photographers. They run workshops, private sessions, tours, and photo expeditions around the capital as well as many other locations in South East Asia.
Dennie explained to me that he does not consider his business to be a typical tour operator but a pair of photographers who live in Bangkok and lead free photo walks. The pair organise walks and tours for two different groups. They also offer private photo walks for those who want to get a taste of the real Bangkok. The groups currently have 5000 members and Dennie and Duangkamon teach basic photography and post processing through photo shoots and private sessions.
Having conducted 75 photo walks in 75 unique communities in Bangkok, they can point to hundreds of locations for the best street photography in the city. No particular place stands above the rest.
We get people from all over the world. Our 5000 members are mostly expats who live here and who join the walks.
We are just two photographers, both professional, one of whom speaks Thai, while we both speak English. We live here and we know the city like very few others in the tour community.
Which is better, daytime or night photography?
Early morning and evening light are the best for photography.
Almost where ever you go there are photo ops if you are always looking.
That is an impossible question to answer as there are too many to narrow it down to one.

Top 10 Places to Take Photos in Bangkok
Dec 9, 2022
Photo Spots Bangkok
Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is one of the most bustling places on earth, and it’s filled with photo opportunities: Buddhist temples with golden spires and stupas sit right beside hyper-modern skyscrapers with fancy rooftop bars from where you can take the best photos of the cityscape. Considered one of the must-see places in Asia, the city also offers superb street food, a variety of night markets, and iconic sites like the Reclining Buddha and the always lively Khao San Road, aka “Backpackers Paradise.” In Bangkok, you’ll understand why they say Thailand is “the land of smiles.”
Here at Flytographer, we connect people with trusted photographers for fun photo shoots and have captured over three million memories worldwide. We asked Bangkok’s local photographers to recommend the best spots for pictures. Let’s see what they said. Here are the top five places to take photos in Bangkok, Thailand. 🇹🇭
Are you ready to say Sawasdee ? 🙏
9. Chulalongkorn University
Chulalongkorn University, or just Chula as it is affectionately called, is Thailand’s number one educational institution, and its vast campus features beautiful places with many photo ops. The Faculty of Arts, for instance, is housed in two exquisite buildings, both unofficially considered “ancient” monuments since they display the old-Bangkok style with stunning courtyards and manicured lawns, bushes, and ponds. ⛲
For a more modern vibe, the Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park is an environmentally friendly urban park with elevated gardens, wetlands, and lots of trees helping the city battle climate change and flood risks. The park’s highlight is its green rooftop, the biggest in Thailand, from where you get panoramic vistas of Bangkok’s cityscape. Join the locals in their pursuit to reconnect with nature and take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. 😌

Top 10 Photo Spots in Bangkok
Looking for the best photo spots in Bangkok? I’ve been traveling to Bangkok several times during my travels and even lived there for a shorter period.
I love Bangkok, it’s an interesting city with a mix of everything. You’ve got everything from history and culture to cool architecture and beautiful viewpoints.
Table of Contents
Wat Arun is one of Bangkok’s most photogenic temples. You can capture Wat Arun from the other side of the river and also take incredible photos around the temple. The details of this temple are insane and is a must to experience and photograph while you’re in Bangkok.

Grand Palace
Grand Palace is Bangkok’s biggest attraction, and it’s such a place all travelers visit while they’re traveling in Bangkok. It’s a beautiful palace with temples, golden stupas, and incredible details. If you want to get the best shots of this place, make sure to visit early in the morning before the crowds. And don’t forget to wear proper clothes, otherwise, they won’t let you in.

Wat Ratchanatdaram
Wat Ratchanatdaram is another beautiful temple in Bangkok where you can take lots of nice photographs. This temple is famous for its 37 metal spires, signifying the 37 virtues toward enlightenment in Buddhist belief. It’s a beautiful temple, so make sure to take your time and see it from different angles – you can take really cool photos at this place!

Have you seen the movie Hangover? This is one of the most famous film locations in Bangkok from that movie. Not only is this place famous for the Hangover movie, but also for their amazing views and delicious drinks. At this bar, there are plenty of good photo opportunities. My best tip is to visit before it gets dark since the most locals and tourists come for sunset.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
If you’re down for a little day-trip, then you simply have to visit the famous floating market outside Bangkok. This is one of the most photogenic markets in Bangkok where you can see all the locals floating around with their boats trying to sell their products.
It’s a cool experience and makes great photos!

Yaowarat Road in Chinatown
Chinatown is like a playground for photographers with its interesting environment. One of the most popular spots is along Yaowarat Road where you can see all the Chinese signs, scooters and taxis.

Maeklong Railway Market – One of My Favorite Photo Spots in Bangkok
One market that isn’t that famous in Bangkok is the Maeklong Railway Market, similar to the one you can find in Hanoi, Vietnam. This market is narrow with street stalls on the sides and a railway in the middle. One of the most iconic shots from this place is when the trains are passing by through the market, which looks really cool!

Rod Fai Train Market at Ratchada
Another cool and photogenic market is the Ratchada Train Market. This market is best photographed from above. To shoot this kind of picture of this place you have to take the lift up to level 4 at the Esplanade Mall, which is located right next to the night market. When you’re up at level 4 you have to walk up to the car park ledge (left side upon entering the parking lot), and from there you’ll be rewarded with a great view of the night market with all its colorful stalls.

Wat Benchamabophit
One temple that I discovered during my recent trip to Bangkok was the Wat Benchamabophit temple. This is one of the best photo spots in Bangkok when it comes to temples since it’s one of the most beautiful that offer great photo spots. Make sure to visit the temple either during sunrise or sunset for the best photos.

Ayuthaya & Lopburi
Ayuthaya & Lopburi is two destinations located outside of Bangkok. Ayuthaya is famous for it’s temples and trees where you can see the famous Buddha heads. Lopburi is located even further away from Ayuthaya and is famous for its Monkey Town and sunflower fields during winter in Thailand.
If you have enough time while you’re in Bangkok I can definitely recommend you to visit both of them. It’s possible to visit both on a day trip if you go early in the morning by train.

Ultimate Bangkok street photography guide: Inspiration, Tips & more [2021]
Heading to Thailand? If you want to do Bangkok street photography, in this guide I will reveal the top spots, some tips and more.
People are nice
Adventurous go to this notorious street, incorporate thai culture.
I’ve been living in Thailand for the better parts of two years and Bangkok is one of my favorite places to shoot street photography. The street photography in this article have all been shot in Bangkok, Thailand and then post processed with these .
Bangkok Street Photography Guide
As someone who lives country to country, living in the north of Thailand is great, but the biggest playground for street photographers is of course Bangkok.
Why makes Bangkok so good for street photography?
Bangkok, being the capital of Thailand is great as a street photography location for multiple reasons: Street life is huge, there is a lot of contrast between the new and the old, and the city comes out at night. People are really nice too!
Street life is huge
Street life is really big in Bangkok. There’s so many markets and interesting roads it’s mind boggling. I once spent hours in a flea market and never went the same place twice.
Unlike a place like New York City for example, where you can pretty much be dropped anywhere to shoot, Bangkok is more cluster-like. Lots of empty roads to walk and then finding interesting spots.
Contrast between new and old
If you search “Bangkok” on Google you’ll find lots of images of modern bars, skylines, and trains. It’s all true, but what makes it interesting is the contrast between the new and the old, right near the shiny new buildings you will find crummy old markets and shops.
This is unlike Hanoi street photography where you mainly have the old style by itself. This really makes Bangkok street photography interesting, the contrast between the crummy old buildings and streets contrasted with the glitzy new construction.
If there was ever one city that you want to do night street photography , it’s Bangkok. Why? Because the night life is huge, and I am not talking about the bar scene either. It’s just that the city really comes alive when it’s night, markets light up and everyone is in the streets.
People are REALLY nice in Thailand. Less so in Bangkok than in Chiang Mai, but still they are extremely nice. You can probably get a portrait if you simply ask, and I found that generally people are comfortable with your camera.
Best places to shoot street photography in Bangkok
So where to go for Bangkok street photography? Here are recommendations.
Don’t miss these 3 spots
It’s better to plan where you are going to go before heading out with your camera. There’s long stretches of road in Bangkok that have nothing to them, until you hit clusters of activity. My number one recommendation is Khao San Road . It’s busting with activity and had a little Hong Kong vibe.
You will have to watch out for scams because this is one of Bankok’s most famous roads and there’s a lot of hustlers, but it’s really a picture haven. Other places to check out is Bangkok Chinatown ( Yaowarat road ), and around the MBK Center Mall . This mall has interesting old style streets and shops all around them and the contrast is interesting.
If all you want is a simple destination for Bangkok Street Photography, these 3 will hit the spot. You can get lost for hours going from Khao San, heading to Chinatown area and finishing around the MBK Mall.
As I jumped into my taxi driver’s car, I felt uncomfortable. I could see him grinning and I had the distinct feeling that he was judging me. Why? Because my destination was Soi Cowboy , a.k.a the red light district.
It was a long ride. But hey, you should see my wife’s face when I asked here if I could go to a place known for strip clubs, prostitutes while she had to stay and watch the kids. Ah, things you do for photographs!
This is for you if you want to do some Bangkok street photography in color. This district is LITERALLY red, and filled with women in bikinis calling you to come inside their clubs where they can screw… your wallet. Thou shall resist the siren’s songs, for thou art there for picture-making. It’s less shady than you think it is, there’s a lot of foreigners and couples just looking around and shooting pictures just like you. The shady stuff is *inside* not outside.
Your camera is of course, for a large part not welcome. So act friendly and touristy, and shoot. You’ll probably get a girl or two that will try to get you in while you do so, but again be friendly and courteous, respect is universal.
Personally I didn’t want to have any identifiable person in the shot (but somehow still have people in my photograph) so I got the shot I wanted and went back home, it’s really a small street and once you get the shot you want, there’s not much around.
Tips for BKK Street Photography
Here’s a few tips for making the most out of your Bangkok street photography adventure
Bangkok really comes alive at night, and there is a LOT of light all around, so even if you are not into night street photography , you will want to hang around when the light starts going down. There are lots of markets spread throughout Bangkok and they will provide for lots of street photography opportunities even if your camera doesn’t do well in low light.
If you found an interesting location and Bankok and feel that there is something missing, chances are if you come back at night it will be full of life and interest. Things really come alive at night, so pack a fast lens and potentially a flash.
Head to the floating market
Tired of traditional Bangkok street photography? This is a heavily trafficked touristic area and a bit far from the main city. But the photo opportunities are plenty. Not only are the sellers are used to cameras, it’s borderline expected. Plus the fact that everyone is a cramped space it makes for really interesting images. You’ll have to pay attention to the light because where the area where the boats are is open, while the parts where people walk are is in the shades.
Use the overpasses
There’s many large roads crisscrossing the city, and because of that there are abundant overpasses. This gives you three opportunities. During the day you can do some street shooting with a high vantage point and shoot down on subjects as they move in and out of your frame, and at night, or you can shoot the passerby by placing yourself on the side or shooting directly at them as they are walking.
Alternatively, you can do like I did and go for slow shutter speeds. I’m not usually a slow shutter speed photographer but many locations beg for the treatment and I was happy to oblige.
The chaos of wires
When you shoot in the city, don’t forget to look up. Bangkok has some of the craziest, most chaotic wiring system you can find. Hundreds of cables running in the same pole. This can make for a nice shot depending on the available light.
The “danger” of doing street photography abroad is making images that could be done everywhere. Incorporate and shoot distinctively Thai elements in your images, specifically the architecture and Tuk-Tuks. Tuk-Tuks are closed bikes where you go in the back and ride.
Always ask for the price up front and bring your wide angle lens for some really interesting shots while being in the back.
I hope you have enjoyed this article about Bangkok street photography. It’s a big city with a few areas that one can get lost in for hours. It’s full of contrasts between old and new and provides a lot of photography opportunities.

12 photos exploring the lives of Thailand’s Ladyboy community
Elizabeth Waterman
Thailand is often celebrated as a bastion of tolerance and a paradise for the international LGBTQ+ community. However, beneath the surface of this welcoming image lies a more complex reality marked by conservative values and discrimination that activists have fought to overcome for decades.
In a landmark decision that could herald a new era for LGBTQ + rights in Southeast Asia , Thailand’s House of Representatives recently passed a same-sex marriage bill by an overwhelming majority, with 399 votes in favor and only 10 against. This significant step forward now requires approval from the Senate and a royal endorsement before it can become law. This legislative victory in the lower house represents a crucial moment of recognition and potential change.
Photographer Elizabeth Waterman captures the importance of this historical turning point through a series of compelling photographs showcasing the lives of Thailand’s Ladyboys, or “Katoeys.” These transgender women embody the tension between Thailand’s image of tolerance and the actual experiences of its LGBTQ+ citizens. Each portrait and accompanying narrative explores individual stories of love, identity, and struggle, providing a poignant commentary on the broader societal shifts occurring within the country.
Waterman’s work offers viewers a deeply personal glimpse into the daily lives and challenges faced by the Ladyboys in urban centers like Bangkok and Pattaya City. Through her lens, the exhibition not only documents the current state of LGBTQ+ rights but also highlights the impact of potential legal changes on individuals and communities. This gallery not only serves as a reflection of current events but also as a call to consider the ongoing fight for equality and acceptance in Thailand’s evolving cultural landscape.

Civilian casualties rise in Myanmar’s civil war as resistance forces tighten noose around military

Six months into an offensive against Myanmar’s military government, opposition forces have made massive gains, but civilian casualties are rising sharply as regime troops increasingly turn toward scorched-earth tactics in the Southeast Asian country’s bitter civil war.
There is pressure on all fronts from powerful militias drawn from Myanmar’s ethnic minority groups and newer resistance forces. Troops are retaliating with air, naval and artillery strikes on hospitals and other facilities where the opposition could be sheltered or aided.
“When the mass of people rise up against them, I think it terrifies them,” said Dave Eubank, a former U.S. Special Forces soldier who founded the Free Burma Rangers, a humanitarian aid organization that has provided assistance to both combatants and civilians in Myanmar since the 1990s.
“They know that hospitals, churches, schools and monasteries are important places for human care, and gathering, and symbols — and they hammer them,” said Eubank. “That’s new.”
Military forces now control less than half the country, but are holding on tenaciously to much of central Myanmar including the capital, Naypyidaw — recently targeted by drone attacks — and largest city, Yangon, and is far better armed than the resistance forces, with support from Russia and China.

Chinese President Xi’s trip to Europe: ‘Charm offensive’ or canny bid to divide the West?
Touring Europe for the first time in five years, Chinese President Xi has sought to both woo and divide. Ukraine and trade are wedge issues for China.
May 9, 2024
“People have been saying that the regime was on the brink of collapse since two weeks after the coup,” in February 2021, said Morgan Michaels, an analyst with the International Institute of Strategic Studies who runs its Myanmar Conflict Map project.
“On the other hand, obviously the regime is weaker than it’s ever been.... so there’s no doubt that it’s in serious, serious trouble,” he said.
Thet Swe, a spokesman for the military government, denied that troops were targeting buildings and areas where civilians were sheltering, blaming their destruction instead on the opposition forces, without citing evidence.
“The military never harmed hospitals, churches and civilians in our country,” he told the Associated Press in an email. “They did not use that strategy and are fighting the rebels only for the sovereignty of our country.”
As the fighting has moved into more populated areas, about 1 million people have been forced to flee their homes since the start of the offensive in October, contributing to the more than 3 million internally displaced people in the country of some 56 million, according to the U.N.’s humanitarian aid agency.
With the collapse of its healthcare system and food supplies dwindling, 18.6 million people are in need, up 1 million from a year ago, including 6 million children, the agency said.
How it began
Opposition in Myanmar, also known as Burma, had been growing since the army seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, but it gained new momentum in October when major militias known collectively as the Three Brotherhood Alliance launched a joint offensive.
Together, the Arakan Army, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army — among the most powerful militias formed by Myanmar’s ethnic minorities — made quick advances.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from a Myanmar prison to house arrest due to heat wave
Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from prison to house arrest amid a regional heat wave, the military government has announced.
April 16, 2024
As they captured huge swaths of territory largely in the north and northeast, including economically important border crossings with China and several major military bases, other ethnic armed groups sensed momentum and joined the fighting.
At the same time, People’s Defense Forces — armed resistance groups that support the shadow National Unity Government, which views itself as Myanmar’s legitimate administration — have been increasing in number and launching their own attacks, often supported and trained by the ethnic armed militias.
Both sides claim they have inflicted heavy tolls. And the military government under Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing has acknowledged it is under pressure, recently reintroducing conscription to increase its ranks.
That has pushed some young people into the resistance. Many more have fled to rural areas or neighboring countries to avoid fighting.
With the violence across its border, China helped broker a cease-fire in Myanmar’s north in January with the Three Brotherhood Alliance. But the alliance’s Arakan Army continues to fight in its home Rakhine state in the west and has made significant gains, while the People’s Defense Forces and other ethnic armed groups continue their own attacks elsewhere.
The latest fighting
The fiercest fighting in recent weeks has been in the southeast, where the main ethnic Karen fighting force, the Karen National Liberation Army, claimed in early April to have seized all the military bases in Myawaddy, the main town on the border with Thailand in Kayin state, also known as Karen state.
One army battalion clung to a position beside one of Myawaddy’s two bridges, assisted by the Border Guard Force, a rival Karen group that had been in charge of border area security for years, conducting lucrative business by providing protection to area casino resorts with links to organized crime.
The force, which declared itself neutral in January, now controls the town with military government administrators still in place, highlighting how some militia groups still prioritize their own interests.
“This is not a black and white situation. This is not the regime reconquering and reconsolidating control,” Michaels said of the fighting in the area. “This is the regime hanging on, keeping a foothold by the razor’s edge.”
Meanwhile, the military has pushed KNLA and People’s Defense Forces out of Kawkareik, a strategically important town along the road that connects Myawaddy with the rest of the country.
Thousands of civilians have fled Myawaddy and Kawkareik. But many civilians haven’t managed to escape.
At least 1,015 civilian deaths have been documented from Nov. 1 through May 1, according to the Assistance Assn. for Political Prisoners, a watchdog group that tracks political arrests, attacks and casualties. It says 4,962 civilians have been killed overall since the military took power three years ago.
The watchdog blamed the deaths on the military’s increasing use of scorched-earth tactics and fighting moving into more populated areas.
“The military has increasingly lost areas of control in recent months, which has only increased their use of this strategy, responding with airstrikes, shelling and so on in civilian areas,” the Assistance Assn. for Political Prisoners said in an email.
The group added that the number of civilian deaths in the recent months of fighting is likely double what it reported, if not more, but that it can’t document the numbers due to the intensification of the conflict.
Kyaw Zaw, a spokesperson for the shadow National Unity Government, said the military had destroyed 343 hospitals and clinics since it took power, and that those attacks had accelerated in the last two months, though he didn’t have specific details.
Eubank, with the Free Burma Rangers, said he and his teams operating near the front lines have witnessed the military, known as the Tatmadaw, fighting with a “speed and force and a viciousness that we’ve never seen.”
But in fighting a common enemy, the resistance is showing growing unity, he said.
“The Burma army is still stronger than any of these resistance groups, and if they want to bring a division or two to bear, they will win the battle, but they’re not stronger than everybody else together,” he said.
What comes next
Whether that unity will continue if the regime falls, and if the disparate resistance forces can agree on a common path ahead for Myanmar, is an open question, Michaels said.
“On one hand, Myanmar is not Syria — there is common cause in fighting the regime,” Michaels said. “But at the same time, as the regime has receded from some areas, there are at least indicators of potential future conflicts between groups.”
He noted an incident in northern Shan state last month in which troops from two members of the Three Brotherhood Alliance — the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army — traded fire over a territorial dispute. One person was injured.
The groups quickly agreed to stand down, but the incident illustrates that territorial tension is real, Michaels said.
An opposition politician still inside the country, speaking on condition of anonymity for his own safety, said Myanmar’s people have a common desire for peace and stability, but the various factions still pursue their own interests.
“They still don’t have a single political direction or goal,” he said.
“Myanmar is now at a crossroads.”
