"How much is a key to a bus locker worth? One day it's worth 25 cents, the next day thousands of dollars. In this story I got to thinking that there are times in our lives when having a dime to make a phone call spells the difference between life and death. Keys, small change, maybe a theater ticket — how about a parking receipt for a Jaguar? All I had to do was link this idea up with time travel to see how the small and useless, under the wise eyes of a time traveler, might signify a great deal more. He would know when that dime might save your life. And, back in the past again, he might prefer that dime to any amount of money, no matter how large." — Philip K. Dick , on the original short story

Paycheck , subtitled Remember The Future in promotional media, is a 2003 American sci-fi action film adapted from the Philip K. Dick short story of the same name, directed by John Woo and starring Ben Affleck , Aaron Eckhart , and Uma Thurman . The supporting cast includes Paul Giamatti , Colm Feore , Joe Morton , Michael C. Hall , Peter Friedman , Kathryn Morris , and Ivana Miličević .

Michael Jennings (Affleck) has a great job. He's a reverse engineer, paid large sums of money to figure out how rival technology works and improve on it. In exchange for his massive paychecks, Jennings must have his recent memory wiped after each job to prevent any information leaks. Since those memories are mostly of him doing long arduous work that he does not mind losing, he is left with "highlights" of time spent with friends and on vacations. Life is good.

Jennings' latest project at Allcom was supposed to be his biggest yet, lasting three years (which were wiped upon completion) but earning him enough money to finally retire.... but something has gone wrong. His 8-figure payment has been forfeited in favour of a manila envelope full of random odds and ends. The FBI wants to talk to him about his apparent involvement in the death of another engineer. A lot of people are trying to kill him. Now Jennings finds himself in the strange position of having to reverse-engineer his own future... before time runs out.

  • Achievements in Ignorance : Shortly after Jennings reunites with Rachel, they try to use BMW key/car alarm to find an escape vehicle, but when Rachel notices an orange and black R1150R Rockster motorcycle with its lights flashing in a nearby display room, she reminds him he learned to ride a motorcycle. Once they're blasting along at 70+ and ducking between cars trying to ram them, she points out that he learned how to ride as in "drive from place to place without crashing" - not become a Badass Driver . Jennings ignores her - he's been doing just fine so far .
  • Adaptational Villainy : In the original short story, the only real threat for Jennings comes from the security police, not from Rethrick (who after the end of Jennings' contract actually offers him to work for the company again at any time). In the adaptation it's almost inverted - to such an extent that Rethrick seems to be motivated primarily by For the Evulz .
  • Aerosol Flamethrower : Used by Jennings to take out a couple hitmen.
  • Bad Boss : Wolfe guns down one of his thugs for being overpowered by Jennings.
  • Badass Bookworm : Jennings and Rachel are both physically fit scientists who are good at fighting against multitudes of assasins and security guards.
  • Another example would be Michael using the gambit on his future self to use the twenty items to solve the mystery.
  • Call to Agriculture : At the end, the main good guys are working in a greenhouse.
  • a pack of cigarettes labelled "Smokeless" - actually regular cigarettes used to escape from the FBI by setting off the fire suppressants in an interrogation room, creating a smoke screen – without it he would have died during interrogation .
  • a pair of tinted sunglasses - allows Jennings to see through the smoke, enabling a quick escape .
  • a bus pass - an item common to both the film and original short story; allows Jennings to escape quickly through a bus terminal – the FBI must jump the turnstiles .
  • a diamond ring - allows a street kid to steal it; had it not happened, Jennings would not have returned to the bank where he received the envelope so he could ask more questions about its origins; also used in the alternate ending in which Jennings proposes to Rachel.
  • a fortune from a fortune cookie with lucky numbers printed on the back - initially it only seems to be proof of the envelope's prophetic nature, lucky numbers matching the lottery winning ones , but in the end it's also a clue to the location of the winning lottery ticket which totally reimburses all Jennings' financial losses .
  • a janitor's key - allows friend to access circuit breakers, creating a distraction .
  • a can of hair spray - used with lighter as a makeshift flamethrower .
  • a cigarette lighter - used with hair spray as a makeshift flamethrower .
  • a paper clip - used to short-circuit electronics to avoid being hit by subway train .
  • a matchbook - specifies a restaurant where he has a reservation, disguised with water-soluble paint as "new liberty saving" bank .
  • a BMW key with alarm - allows him to identify and utilize a means of escape: a motorcycle .
  • a loupe - allows him to notice discrepancy on stamp .
  • an unnecessary postage stamp on the envelope - contains a microdot with snapshots from the future – the fact that it's Albert Einstein on the stamp is a clue .
  • a small container of ball bearings - used to set off metal detectors, creating a distraction at security .
  • a keycard - shared with the original short story; allows him to re-enter his lab in the film and escape from the plant in the short story .
  • a hex key - used to open lab door security panel .
  • an Eisenhower Dollar - used to jam lab door security panel .
  • a Crossword Puzzle - locates hardware bug on the machine, allowing him to repair it .
  • a .45 Caliber bullet - used to destroy the machine – fired into hydrogen tank by a cycling piston .
  • Not related to the envelope is the remote-controlled grabbing device in Rachel's lab, along with her thunder, lightning, and wind effects.
  • a length of fine wire - used to break the lock in the security police cruiser .
  • a bus token - same context as in the film.
  • a ticket stub - from his journey to the plant - allowed Jennings to learn the whereabouts of the facility .
  • a green strip of cloth - typically worn as a sign of a temporary worker at the Rethrick's plant; allows Jennings to mingle with the workers .
  • a code key - in a small twist, it turned out to be needed not to enter , but to exit the facility .
  • half a poker chip - used as proof that Jennings is a casino customer, which allows him to stay in the casino at night and thus evade the security police during the curfew .
  • a parcel receipt - an item from the future, retrieved by the time scoop. Allows Jennings to get access to the storage vault in the bank where the blackmail materials are deposited by Kelly McVane , Jennings' accomplice who turns out to be Rethrick's daughter and promptly betrays Jennings. Also an initial clue to the nature of his work at Rethrick's, as the date on a receipt shows that it is issued a few days after Jennings regains memory .
  • Chekhov's Skill : In the beginning of the film there is a short scene of Jennings training at the gym, hitting targets with a staff. Guess how he beats up mooks near the ending?
  • Chronoscope : The Time Scope, of course.
  • Collapsing Lair : During the climax, the lab with the machine in it goes down in an explosion.
  • Condensation Clue : Jennings wrote a note to Rachel on her bathroom mirror so she would know that he hadn't abandoned her.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive : Rethrick.
  • Death by Adaptation : Rethrick . In the short story Jennings simply blackmails Rethrick into letting him become a partner in running the company , while in the movie Jennings leaves himself a watch timed to tell him to move just in time to get out of the way of a bullet and allowing it to hit Rethrick .
  • Disturbed Doves : Well, it is a John Woo film...
  • Dodge the Bullet : Jennings ducks in time to avoid the FBI Agent's bullet that then kills Rethrick .
  • The Dragon : John Wolfe.
  • Every Car Is a Pinto : Car vs. pipe. Point goes to the pipe.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing : The bad guy stands in front of the machine that shows the future, but only sees himself throwing down the controls and trying to escape just as the machine explodes in his face. Horrified, he throws down the controls and tries to escape just as the machine explodes in his face.
  • For the Evulz : Is there any other reason for Rethrick to kill the former employees who weren't able to remember anything substantial anyway? Who knows whether Jennings would have turned on Allcom at all if it hadn't been for Rethrick's willingness to murder him... Notably averted in the original short story (see Adaptational Villainy ).
  • Framed Clue : The extra stamp on the envelope.
  • Gambit Roulette : Jennings uses a Memory Gambit , prophecies, and a time portal in his plan to outsmart his opponents.
  • "Good Luck" Gesture : You can see that Jennings has his fingers crossed when he raises his head after almost being run over by a subway train .
  • Gunpoint Banter : Happens twice.
  • Has a Type : Both Rachel and the executive Jennings has a brief fling with in the first scene have short blonde hair.
  • Intangible Time Travel : The time scope. In the original short story, played straight with the time mirror and downplayed with the time scoop (no time travel for humans, but an object from the future could be mechanically retrieved).
  • It May Help You on Your Quest : Justified here; the character knew exactly what was going to happen in the future and when (see Note to Self , below).
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia : Literally. It involves a submicronic laser being used on individual memory-neurons in Jennings' brain and happens to him after every job to prevent data leaks.
  • Magical Security Cam : The memory reader, which somehow works in third-person.
  • Memory Gambit : Knowing his memory would be wiped, Jennings left clues to lead himself to the info or escape route he needed.
  • Memory Wipe Exploitation : At the beginning of the film, the protagonist has a brief affair with an executive while working on a project. They both know that his memories will be wiped once the project is complete, so it can be treated as an inherently short-term thing.
  • Mexican Standoff : Happens three different times in the film!
  • Mood Whiplash : An assassin attempts to take a shot at Jennings from behind his newspaper disguise while in a subway station. Then, suddenly, a small kid with a toy revolver approaches the assassin in disguise, and "shoots" him (saying something along the lines of "Bang! Bang! You're dead!"). The assassin ignores him and takes out his long badass silenced pistol ( BFG ) to take aim at Jennings. The kid only seems annoyed .
  • Named by the Adaptation : In the original short story, we're never told Jennings' first name; the movie gives him the first name Michael.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles : Jennings sabotages the time scope by adding a simple circuit to the vast array of circuit boards that control it. The techs in Rethrick's employ can't simply do a quick one-over of the boards and find one out-of-place object, so it buys time for Jennings to figure out what's happening to him without Rethrick using the time scope to get ahead of him. On top of that, he's given himself instructions on how to correct the sabotage when he needs to use the time scope.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain : See For the Evulz . Honestly, Rethrick's pathetic attempt at The Reason You Suck speech in the end should have been directed towards himself.
  • No Full Name Given : In the original short story, we're never told Jennings' first name.
  • Note to Self : Made difficult as the only things Jennings could sneak out were innocuous items.
  • Oh, Crap! : Wolfe has a justifiably panicked reaction when the device that shows the future projects an image of himself being killed by an explosion as he tries to run away from that very control panel. Seconds later, that image comes to pass due to Jennings' sabotage.
  • Old Cop, Young Cop : There is a twenty-year age difference between the two FBI agents. Dodge, the older one, has some good gut feelings and reasonable insights. His partner Klein is less imaginative, but is practical and efficient.
  • Ontological Mystery : Jennings' last job and what happened on it kicks off the bulk of the plot, especially since due to the memory-erasure procedure he doesn't know why anyone would kill him over it or why he's been accused of killing someone.
  • Plot Tailored to the Party : Justified! As a reverse engineer with an access to the time scope, Jennings is uniquely suited to analyze the numerous potential bad futures and give himself innocuous-looking doodads to allow himself to survive.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation : Though the basic idea is more or less the same (Jennings completes a job and has his memory wiped, finds himself in trouble with the law with the only clues being a series of seemingly useless items he left for himself as the result of seeing his own future ), the movie is a lot more elaborate than the short story. Some of the key plot elements are seen earlier in the movie, but the ending is completely different in both versions.
  • Psycho for Hire : Wolfe, The Dragon , is a brutally efficient thug who takes pleasure in mocking Jennings about his approaching death. Of course, his boss isn't much better.
  • Quest for Identity : Jennings is trying to find out what happened on his last job.
  • Raster Vision : Used for the holographic interface.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure : The two FBI agents are quick to decide that Jennings doesn't show signs of guilt. They are equally quick to accept that Jennings' actions indicate he has knowledge of the future, and they are Properly Paranoid about how their own government might abuse that technology.
  • Screw Destiny : What the machine would hopefully do, though Jennings's initial use of it indicates it's closer to a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy . The eventual conclusion seems to be that you can do it, but it's really hard .
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy : The stamps on Jennings' envelope demonstrate this. Images of newspaper articles show that the predictions the machine makes come true but it's because the people they are given to are too quick to jump to conclusions, thereby creating the very catastrophe they were trying to avert. Jennings, an engineer, had both the time and intelligence to logically deconstruct his prophecies and give himself specific tools to avert them.
  • Someday This Will Come in Handy : Inverted. Jennings was working from (temporary) foreknowledge of his own future, and after his memory wipe he has to figure out what is needed where.
  • Spot the Imposter / Trust Password : Maya fails at this by not knowing Michael's favorite baseball team.
  • Stupid Evil : Wolfe and his men try to kill Jennings multiple times in broad daylight and in front of multiple witnesses. The most egregious of which takes place in downtown traffic in unmarked cars with their license plates in clear view with the police also on their target's tails.
  • 20 Minutes into the Future : Set between 2004-2007, a few years after the film's 2003 release. Deliberately in contrast to Dick's original 1953 short story, which depicted a much more distant (and near-dystopian) future with many more obvious sci-fi elements.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight : Michael and Rachel sneak into a chemistry lab at a high school to use the microscope to examine a clue. When they're leaving, there are kids all over the hallways. No one seems to notice or care that there are two adults wandering the hall, while school is in session, that no one there knows...
  • Viewer-Friendly Interface : Every computer in this movie.
  • The Watson : Shorty serves as someone for Jennings to tell his theories about what's going on during one pivotal scene.
  • Wealthy Ever After : At the end Jennings recalls a fortune cookie note from the envelope and discovers that he has foreseen the results of a $90 million lottery. Bingo!
  • With This Herring : Jennings begins his quest with odds and ends. They come in handy but the trope is still valid.
  • You Will Know What to Do : Pulled off artfully in the movie (he gets twenty of these), but with a bit more flair in the short story.

All Ben Affleck Movies Ranked

Ben Affleck chose the right friends early on: His first notable appearance was in 1992’s School Ties , which happened to co-star Matt Damon. The two would go on to become household names after co-writing and co-starring in the Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting . And a few years after School Ties , Affleck starred in Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy , and is now a regular fixture in Smith’s View Askewniverse. Damon, Smith, and Affleck would all work together in 1999’s iconoclastic Dogma .

Later on in his career, Affleck would pal around with Michael Bay, creating two bombastic feasts together: Armageddon and Pearl Harbor . He’s worked with some of the most legendary directors of their time, like John Woo ( Paycheck ), John Frankenhemier ( Reindeer Games ), Richard Linklater ( Dazed and Confused ), and David Fincher ( Gone Girl ) — experiences we’re sure all went into Affleck’s own directing career, which culminated in the Best Picture-winning Argo .

Affleck’s recent stint in the DCEU has left his image relatively unscathed: His Batman was considered among the best things out of Batman v Superman and Justice League . And after some highly public personal issues and with his last directorial effort, Live By Night , a Rotten bomb, Affleck’s now on something of a comeback trail for 2020. The Last Thing He Wanted ‘s single-digit Tomatometer was probably the last thing Affleck wanted at this point. But his 2020 sports drama The Way Back transcended the inspirational sports template, giving him a meaty role to sink his teeth into, and it impressed critics along the way. Recently, he’s been in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel , George Clooney’s The Tender Bar , and Deep Water , which makes it onto our list of the 100 sexiest movies , and Air . Until then, we’re ranking all Ben Affleck movies by Tomatometer! — Alex Vo

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck teamed up again for the big screen before recent reports of a strain in their marriage .

The couple — who previously starred together in Gigli (2003) and Jersey Girl (2004) — both worked on Unstoppable , a movie from his  production company Artists Equity , which he co-founded with longtime friend and collaborator  Matt Damon . Affleck, 51, and Damon, 53, are among the 14 producers on the film, while Lopez, 54, is one of the actors.

Unstoppable centers around the life of wrestler  Anthony Robles , who was born with one leg and won a national championship in 2011 while competing at Arizona State University. Actor Jharrel Jerome ( Moonlight ) is set to portray Robles in the upcoming film. Its supporting cast includes Bobby Cannavale , Don Cheadle and Michael Peña .

The Amazon MGM Studios film wrapped production this past January and is slated to be released later this year.

Affleck was asked by CBS Sunday Mornings in March 2023 about collaborating with Lopez on the film. "What fun, what a joy to do something with her , see her be great, go to work with your wife, go to work with your best friend," he said.

"If you don't like who you're working with, and if you have difficulty or trouble at work, I think it's one of the things that can really cause depression, anxiety and pain for people," he added at the time. "And conversely, [if] you love the people at work, you probably have a pretty good life, you know?"

"Can't make it look like she's doing it as a favor to me, but actually she is," Affleck also said during the interview as he praised the opportunity to work with his wife, whom  he married in Las Vegas  in July 2022 after they famously  rekindled their romance  in 2021.

Unstoppable  will be directed by William Goldenberg, who previously worked with Affleck as an editor on his 2023 movie  Air , as well as  Argo  (2012).

Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic

Aside from the already-wrapped Unstoppable — which is also co-produced by Lopez's producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas — the Hustlers  actress is set to star in a new film adaptation of the Broadway musical  Kiss of the Spider Woman .

The latter will be directed by Bill Condon ( Dreamgirls ) and also star Diego Luna , while Affleck and Damon are among the co-producers through Artists Equity.

Affleck also helped his wife prepare for her role in her new movie Atlas , while Lopez said with a smile in a Vogue "73 Questions" video back in November 2022 that she would most want to make a sequel to their movie Gigli .

Asked by Variety earlier this year whether she and Affleck would ever star in another movie together , Lopez said, "Maybe, in the right thing."

"I mean, we love working together and being together, so maybe," she added.

The company's first film, Air , was one of the best drama movies of 2023 , with Damon starring and Affleck directing and playing a supporting role. Their next collaboration, a crime film titled Animals , is set to release on Netflix, with both stars appearing in the film and Affleck behind the camera once again.

The list is ordered chronologically, from their first collaboration in 1989 to their most recent in 2023.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are working on a new movie together, which will continue one of the longest-running trends in their shared careers.

10 Field Of Dreams (1989)

Damon & affleck were extras in kevin costner's baseball classic.

The first movie Matt Damon and Ben Affleck appeared in together is an iconic one, however, their presence in the movie is not exactly noteworthy. The actors both appeared as extras in the Kevin Costner baseball film Field of Dreams .

In an interview with Dan Patrick , Damon shared his experience appearing in the film, explaining that the young actors took the gig just so they could go to Fenway Park, the baseball stadium of the Boston Red Sox.

With thousands of extras in the scene, it'd be impossible to actually spot the pair, though Damon mentions that they got to spend a few minutes with Costner, picking his brain about the film industry years before they'd become superstars in their own right . Recently, Costner revealed that he does remember Affleck and Damon on the Field of Dreams set despite the fact that they were unknown actors at the time.

9 School Ties (1992)

A prep school drama exploring anti-semitism in 1950s america.

Even before Good Will Hunting made them superstars, Damon and Affleck were beginning to find some success in film roles in the '90s. The 1992 film School Ties saw the two in their first prominent roles , acting with other young stars like Brendan Fraser, Chris O'Donnell, and Cole Hauser. While Damon's part is much bigger than Affleck's, it was still a significant step in both of their careers, setting the tone for the types of films they'd be in leading up to their rise to stardom.

Before breaking out in Good Will Hunting , Affleck continued to land parts in teen "slacker movies," a subgenre of the 1990s that primarily included the works of directors like Richard Linklater and Kevin Smith. Affleck continued to have supporting roles in similar movies to School Ties , such as Dazed and Confused and Mallrats . Damon and Affleck's School Ties co-star, Cole Hauser, also appeared as part of their friend group in Good Will Hunting and co-starred with Affleck in Dazed and Confused . Even if it's not their most prominent movie, School Ties was essential to their budding careers.

School Ties is set in the 1950s and stars Fraser as a young Jewish man who earns a scholarship to go to an elite prep school. He is initially accepted by the others as a popular student and an accomplished athlete. However, when Damon's jealous character discovers Fraser's Jewish heritage, he reveals it to the others who turn on him with vile antisemitism . Not only is it interesting to see Damon and Affleck so early in their career but also playing such unlikable characters.

School Ties

8 glory daze (1995), a '90s indie slacker movie.

Another of the 1990s slacker movies, the 1995 film Glory Daze, featured Ben Affleck in his first starring role . Different from School Ties , where he starred, Matt Damon appears in Glory Daze in a very minor role, not even speaking.

The movie seems to try to be capturing the same vibe as Affleck's earlier and more successful film, Dazed and Confused , following a group of friends at college who face the idea of breaking up and going their separate ways with graduation approaching.

It's not the most well-reviewed film, but it's still a fun watch for fans of the '90s independent slacker genre, and Damon and Affleck are among the famous faces that can be spotted in it. Sam Rockwell and John Rhys-Davies play roles in the movie, and Matthew McConaughey and Brendan Fraser also appear very briefly . Though they were both becoming more established actors, it is interesting to see they were already popping up in each other's movies in smaller roles just for the fun of it.

7 Good Will Hunting (1997)

A quintessential coming-of-age romance.

For Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Good Will Hunting was the pivotal film that launched them into Hollywood stardom. Famously, Affleck and Damon wrote the movie to give themselves quality roles that Hollywood wasn't offering them at the time. Good Will Hunting stars Damon as a math genius working small jobs in Boston until his talents are discovered, giving him a path to a brighter future. Affleck costars as his best friend.

Much of the film's strength comes from Damon and Affleck's sharp writing.

Damon's career instantly flourished, receiving prominent roles from filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and Steven Soderbergh in the following years. Affleck also had a slew of blockbuster films, though it took more time for him to receive his fair dues as a filmmaker and screenwriter. However, Affleck's performance in the movie is also underrated as he delivers a famous speech .

Widely considered one of the best movies of the 1990s, Good Will Hunting proves that a film can be highly entertaining through the power of script and performance. Much of the film's strength comes from Damon and Affleck's sharp writing , which strengthens the incredible performances of Damon and star Robin Williams. Good Will Hunting' s many great quotes , from the powerful to the hilarious, have added to its popularity and relevancy while showing the actors to be an excellent writing duo, something they would not do again together for decades.

Good Will Hunting

6 chasing amy (1997), an indie rom-com from kevin smith.

Like Glory Daze , the 1997 film Chasing Amy is a Ben Affleck-led movie with a minor cameo from Matt Damon . Directed by Kevin Smith , who'd become a frequent collaborator with the two stars, Chasing Amy hasn't aged particularly well but was an important role for Affleck to get him out of the bully/villainous roles and become more of a likable leading man.

The movie stars Affleck as a comic book writer who falls for a girl (Joey Lauren Adams) only to discover that she is a lesbian. Carrying on a friendship with her, he attempts to convince her that he is the one she should be with. The film has its strengths as an independent romantic comedy, but Kevin Smith is out of his depth writing a story about LGBT characters . However, Affleck is very strong in the funny, sweet, and layered leading role. Damon appears in one scene as an executive trying to buy the rights to Affleck's comic.

Chasing Amy

5 dogma (1999), a kevin smith comedy with fantastical & religious elements.

Dogma was the next Kevin Smith movie in which Damon and Affleck collaborated, both taking on much larger roles. Smith goes for an ambitious story that mixes Biblical elements and rich mythology with the kind of juvenile humor and pop culture gags he is mostly known for . Affleck and Damon star as two fallen angels living aimless lives on Earth when they discover a loophole that they think will allow them to return to heaven. However, it will really cause the end of existence which leads to a band of heroic misfits setting out to stop them.

Damon is very funny as the unhinged and vengeful angel while Affleck is excellent as the movie's complex villain.

The 1999 film was the last time Damon and Affleck starred in a film together in leading roles for decades ; as their careers expanded, they tried to pursue individual projects, feeling that they'd be limited by continuously working with each other. Dogma is a comedy film with fantastical elements, revolving around the star duo as fallen angels who are banished from Heaven and sent to Wisconsin. Damon is very funny as the unhinged and vengeful angel while Affleck is excellent as the movie's complex villain.

4 Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

Damon & affleck appear in a meta cameo.

In 2001, both Damon and Affleck made cameo appearances in Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back which was meant to be the closing chapter of his View Askewniverse cinematic universe and thus brought many of the characters from these movies together . The movie follows Jay and Silent Bob as they head out on a road trip to stop a Hollywood from making a movie out of the comic book characters they inspired, Bluntman and Chronic.

While the film itself isn't one of the best Kevin Smith movies, their cameo appearances make it worth the watch. The two stars appear as themselves in a scene where they're shooting a fake Good Will Hunting sequel , joking about themselves selling out. They re-create the bar altercation scene from the original movie with a hilarious comedic twist, even including filmmaker Gus Van Sant in the sketch.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Matt Damon has a tendency to appear in minor, often comedic, cameo roles in various film projects, from Thor: Ragnarok to EuroTrip to Deadpool 2.

3 Jay And Silent Bob Reboot (2019)

Another kevin smith comedy with meta-commentary on reboot culture.

2019's Jay and Silent Bob Reboot , not to be confused with the previous, similarly named rendition, is another Kevin Smith film where Damon and Affleck make brief cameo appearances . The Jay and Silent Bob movie followed the stoner duo as they set out on yet another road trip, this time looking to stop a reboot of the Bluntman and Chronic movie.

Affleck appears as himself in a monologue scene where he makes references to playing Batman and his role in Chasing Amy . Matt Damon's cameo scene has him pick up his role from Dogma , joking that he played a character named Loki in a movie before Tom Hiddleston made it cool . Unfortunately, Smith's writing is not as sharp as in the previous two collaborations and these cameos, along with many of the others in the movie, feel much more forced.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

2 the last duel (2021), a medieval war film from ridley scott.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's first prominent collaboration in over 20 years was for The Last Duel . The pair co-wrote the film alongside Nicole Holofcener , their first filmed script together since winning the Oscar together more than two decades earlier. To add to the pedigree of the movie, Ridley Scott directed the medieval epic. Matt Damon stars with Jodie Comer and Adam Driver, and Affleck appears in a significant supporting role.

The movie is loosely based on a true story about two rival knights (Driver and Damon) who find themselves in a deadly confrontation when Damon's wife (Comer) makes a shocking accusation. The story is told through the perspective of the three main characters, each with a different view of the events . It's a great historical epic that bombed at the box office , but the movie received rave reviews and many called it an underrated gem. While Affleck's performance as a count overseeing the feud was nominated for a Razzie, many defended it as a highlight of the movie.

The Last Duel

1 air (2023), a biographical drama about the world of sports & fashion.

The first film from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's production company is also the first time Affleck directed Damon in a movie . The movie delves into the true story of how Nike was able to persuade Michael Jordan to sign with their company which led to the creation of the iconic sneaker line, Air Jordans. Damon stars as the talent scout who worked to put the deal together while Affleck plays a supporting role as the CEO of the company, Phil Knight.

Air wasn't a box office success, but it was a well-reviewed movie. The two stars are at their best with intelligent dialogue and performance-driven films, and Air has set the precedence for the style of films Artists Equity will be producing . The duo also spoke openly about how much they enjoyed the writing process together (though they didn't take credit for their rewrites) which could mean another collaboration like this won't be long.

A Comprehensive History of Every Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Collaboration

ben affleck time travel movie

F or Matt Damon and Ben Affleck , a life-long friendship has also fostered an award-winning, critically acclaimed creative partnership and a rich shared body of work. Since 1989, Damon and Affleck have appeared in nine movies together, including Good Will Hunting, a coming-of-age film the pair not only starred in, but wrote the screenplay for, resulting in their first Oscar wins for Best Screenplay in 1998. Their latest collaboration is Air , which released in theaters on April 5 and centers on the true story of how Michael Jordan signed an industry-changing shoe deal with Nike . In the film, Damon plays sports marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro, who recruited Jordan for the now-legendary Nike deal, while Affleck, who directed the film, portrays eccentric Nike co-founder Phil Knight.

Air marks a new era of creative collaboration for the duo, who recently teamed up to create Artists Equity, a production company that seeks to give its cast and crew a fair share of the profits of the movies made; at the company, Affleck is the chief executive, while Damon is the head of content. But this new stage of their careers is just another milestone in a bromance for the ages. The duo met over 40 years ago as children in Cambridge, M.A., outside of Boston, and knew their friendship was the real deal after Affleck defended Damon in a school yard fight. As teenagers, they pursued film careers together, traveling from Boston to New York City for auditions. Once they broke into Hollywood, the two continued to support each other’s work and often pursued projects that allowed them to work together both on and off the screen.

“This friendship has been essential and defining and so important to me in my life,” Affleck told Damon in a 2022 Entertainment Weekly interview. “There were a few critical times, which are private and I don’t want to share, but where your support was so profoundly meaningful to me that I don’t think I would’ve been able to be successful without it.”

Here’s a look back at every Matt Damon and Ben Affleck movie.

Field of Dreams (1989)

The duo made their big screen debut as uncredited extras in Field of Dreams. According to an interview with Damon on the Dan Patrick Show , the main reason why they were in the film was because the call for extras was at the Red Sox’s baseball arena, Fenway Park.

“Just to go to Fenway,” Damon said. “We were extras in ‘Field of Dreams.’ I bet there were probably 3,000 extras in a big crowd scene when Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones are at the baseball game.” Damon also said that their first film experience had a big impact on them, including getting to meet Costner.

“Costner came out and hung out with the extras,” he said. “And Ben and I went and struck up a conversation with him. And he probably gave us five minutes. He was incredibly generous with his time.”

School Ties (1992)

Affleck and Damon’s next film together was School Ties , where they co-starred as Chesty Smith and Charlie Dillon, two anti-semitic bullies who target David Green (played by Brendan Fraser), a Jewish classmate, at their prestigious prep school.

Good Will Hunting

With Good Will Hunting, Affleck and Damon established themselves as not just talent on the silver screen, but behind-the-scenes as well. Damon stars as the titular character, a mathematic genius who works at MIT as a janitor, while Affleck played his friend, Chuckie. The pair wrote the screenplay together, with Damon beginning the initial script while a student at Harvard; the film draws inspiration from their shared upbringing in the Boston area.

“We came up with this idea of the brilliant kid and his townie friends, where he was special and the government wanted to get their mitts on him,” Affleck said of the film during a 2013 interview with Boston Magazine . “And it had a very Beverly Hills Cop , Midnight Run sensibility, where the kids from Boston were giving the NSA the slip all the time.”

The film became a critically acclaimed darling, garnering the pair a Golden Globe award and an Oscar for Best Screenplay.

Chasing Amy (1997)

Affleck and Damon appeared on-screen together yet again in Chasing Amy , a film that centers on the romantic woes of Holden McNeil, played by Affleck, who falls for Amy, a lesbian; Damon has a bit part as a business executive. While the film hasn’t aged well, especially in relation to its depiction of sexuality, it’s largely considered a cult classic as part of the Kevin Smith (better known as “Silent Bob”) Clerks cinematic universe.

Dogma (1999)

The duo appeared in another film for the Clerks film world with Dogma , the fourth film in the series, which centers on Damon and Affleck as Bartleby and Loki, two fallen angels who are banished to live in Wisconsin.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

In Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back , the fifth movie in the Clerks film series, Damon and Affleck’s on-screen roles get meta. The pair co-star as themselves, as well as their respective characters from Good Will Hunting and Affleck reprises his role as the hapless Holden from Chasing Amy .

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019)

Eighteen years after their last appearance in a Clerks film, Affleck and Damon appeared in the aptly named Jay and Silent Bob Reboot . For this film, Affleck reprised Holden from Chasing Amy yet again , while Damon plays his Loki character from Dogma, but with a tongue-in-cheek twist—the fallen angel is also Jason Bourne, a wry nod at Damon’s immensely popular film persona.

The Last Duel (2021)

With The Last Duel , Affleck and Damon starred as French noblemen caught up in a battle for honor. Damon starred as Sir Jead de Carrouges, a nobleman who’s so obsessed with securing the approval of his liege lord, Count Pierre d’Alencon, played by Affleck, that he’s an absent husband to his wife, who claims she is raped by a knight.

In Air , the pair reunite on screen again for the first offering from their production company, Artists Equity. Centering on the story of how Michael Jordan signed his now-legendary shoe deal with Nike, the film stars Damon as Sonny Vaccaro, the sports marketing executive who was the architect of the deal and co-stars Affleck, who also directed the movie, as Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike.

Jennifer Lopez was spotted on a commercial flight traveling from Naples, Italy, to Paris on Saturday, photos obtained by TMZ show.

The “Let’s Get Loud” singer, 54, is worth an estimated $400 million, but she opted not to take a private jet to the City of Light.

Not only did she not fly private, Lopez traveled on an Air France flight and sat in a window seat in the economy section.

She appeared to have also reserved the seat next to her, where she placed her large handbag. Her bodyguard traveled with her and sat in the aisle seat, according to the Daily Mail .

Business class seats were not an option on the flight.

The “Hustlers” star left Italy after enjoying a relaxing vacation without her husband, Ben Affleck.

She took a boat ride with friends in Positano and couldn’t stop taking selfies while rocking a $99 white one-piece Gooseberry bathing suit.

Also during the trip, Lopez went out to dinner with two pals — one man and one woman — at an upscale restaurant.

“Jen loves vacationing in Europe during the summer,” a source told “Entertainment Tonight” on Monday. “It’s been nice for her to experience a change of pace and have some breathing room. She has been having a blast with her friends.”

The insider added, “That’s never really been Ben’s scene, even when him and Jen weren’t having any issues. Jen isn’t letting the fact that Ben’s not there bring her down.”

The trip comes weeks after Lopez canceled her summer tour.

On Tuesday, a source told People that Lopez was “grateful” for time to herself, and that she and Affleck are “doing their own thing so far this summer.”

“Jennifer’s having a wonderful time in Europe. She loves Italy and visits every year. She’s grateful for a break,” the insider said. “The past few weeks have been emotional for her. Ben has been working in LA and is spending time with his kids. Everyone seems to be doing OK.”

Lopez and Affleck, 51, have been spending time apart as reports claim that they’re heading for a divorce two years after tying the knot.

While Lopez was in Italy, her husband has been trying to lie low in Los Angeles, where he’s filming the sequel to his 2016 movie “The Accountant.”

The Massachusetts-raised actor made headlines, though, for confronting paparazzi who were using flash cameras as he was behind the wheel pulling out of his and Lopez’s Beverly Hills mansion that’s rumored to be up for sale . Affleck got out of his car and chastised the photographers, warning them that they’re putting his life in danger.

The breakup rumors about the couple started when Lopez attended the Met Gala by herself in May.

Since then, the pair have been seen out together only a handful of times, including at Affleck’s 12-year-old son Samuel’s graduation earlier this month.  Lopez arrived separately and kept her distance at the event.

A source told People on June 11 that Lopez and Affleck “are still friendly and see each other every few days.”

The stars have not publicly addressed the speculation about their relationship.

He described the phenomenon as "amazing" but admitted that he doesn't enjoy the constant attention that comes with fame. This aversion often leads to him appearing unhappy in photographs.

"This is why people see me [and] they're like, 'Well, this dude is always mad…' Because somebody has their camera and is sticking it in my face," he explained, emphasizing his protective nature, especially towards his children.

Jennifer and Ben don't share any children together, but have made a conscious effort to bring their own families into their blended household.

The singer is a proud mother of twins, Max and Emme, with her ex-husband Marc Anthony, while Ben shares Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner.

“Don’t do that. That’s dangerous,” he added. “I can’t see! You’re gonna get somebody hurt doing this shit!”

While walking back to his vehicle, Ben emphasized that he was also looking out for his daughter's safety, who he noted would soon be coming down the driveway as well.

“If you flash the lights on her, you’re putting her in danger,” he told the group at the bottom of the hill, referring to one of his two teenage daughters he shares with his ex, Jennifer Garner . “Do you understand that?”

The exchange comes amid a reportedly stressful time in Ben’s life due to alleged issues in his marriage to J.Lo, who was not at their home at the time of the paparazzi incident.

Following reports that Ben and J.Lo — who married in 2022 — are “living separate lives,” Jen is currently vacationing in Europe. Just yesterday, she was seen attending the Dior fashion show in Paris , with sources claiming she’s enjoying “some breathing room.”

“Jen loves vacationing in Europe during the summer. It’s been nice for her to experience a change of pace and have some breathing room,” an insider told Entertainment Tonight this week. “She has been having a blast with her friends… Jen isn’t letting the fact that Ben’s not there bring her down.”

Earlier this month, it was also reported that Ben and Jen are “quietly” attempting to sell their shared home , outside of which Ben confronted the paparazzi. They purchased the property in May last year and moved in soon after.
