We have lots more on the site to show you. You've only seen one page. Check out this post which is one of the most popular of all time.

The Ultimate 1-Day Itinerary in Bendigo

Bendigo is the fourth largest city in Victoria (ranked after Melbourne , Geelong , and Ballarat ). It is well-known for its glorious gold mining history, impressive Victorian architecture, and strong Chinese heritage.

Walking around Bendigo city, you will find many grand Victorian-era buildings and statues , all built from the wealth of Bendigo’s gold rush. There are also many stunning Chinese temples and gardens around Bendigo, which are the legacy of those Chinese miners during the gold rush era.

There is a lot to see in Bendigo, but you can certainly visit Bendigo’s major attractions on a day trip . To help plan your trip, I have put together this 1-day itinerary for visiting Bendigo, based on my recent visit.

Information on how to get to Bendigo & where to stay in Bendigo is also provided for your convenience. Hope you can find this article useful.

Bendigo Vintage Talking Tram

One-Day Itinerary in Bendigo

Bendigo vintage talking tram.

Bendigo’s Vintage Talking Tram is among the most iconic attractions in Bendigo. It is also the best and most scenic way to learn the culture and history of Bendigo .

Sitting in a restored tram from the early 1900s, you will be passing by a plethora of historic buildings along High Street and Pall Mall, glancing over the beautiful Lake Weeroona, and stopping by the peaceful Joss House Temple.

The Vintage Talking Tram is operated between Central Deborah Gold Mine and Bendigo Joss House Temple . It also stops at Charing Cross, Lake Weeroona, and Tysons Reef. The ride takes about 20-25 minutes one-way & passengers can get on and off the tram at any stop.

Opens in a new tab.

When I visited Bendigo (May 2022), the first Vintage Talking Tram did not depart Central Debrah Gold Mine until 10 am, although the ticket office at the gold mine opens from 9.30 am already.

With that being said, the ticket to this Vintage Talking Tram also included access to the above-ground gold mine museum at Central Deborah Gold Mine. So I used the 30-minute waiting time walking through the miner’s change rooms, blacksmith shop, first aid room, and the gold museum instead. It was an interesting experience on its own.

Central Deborah Gold Mine

Central Deborah Gold Mine (optional)

Central Deborah Gold Mine is a real gold mine that operated between 1939 and 1954. Nowadays, visitors can join one of its underground gold mine tours to peek through the life in the mine & learn the process of gold mining.

As mentioned above, the Vintage Talking Tram departs from/arrives at Central Deborah Gold Mine, so you may wish to join the tour either before or just after your tram ride. However, the tour does take a significant amount of time, so you may need to skip certain attractions from this itinerary if the underground tour is what you prefer to partake in.

Classic Chinese Garden at Gold Dragon Museum

Bendigo Joss House Temple

From Central Deborah Gold Mine, the Vintage Talking Tram will take you across the buzzing Bendigo CBD to the heritage-listed Chinese temple, Bendigo Joss House Temple.

Bendigo Joss House Temple is a small temple worshipping Kwan Gong, the god of war and prosperity. First opened its door to the public in 1871, Joss House Temple is one of the few remaining temples of its kind in Australia. It is a great place to broaden your understanding of Chinese culture and beliefs .

In saying that, when visiting Bendigo Joss House Temple via the Vintage Talking Tram, the tram conductor should be able to inform you if the temple is open as well.

Gold Dragon Museum

Gold Dragon Museum

It doesn’t matter if you have much understanding of Chinese culture, a visit to the Gold Dragon Museum will still impress you with its vast collection of antiques and artefacts . These displays will take you back to the gold rush era to experience Bendigo’s immense prosperity back in the day.

Entry to Gold Dragon Museum requires a ticket, which is AUD 12 per adult (July 2022). This ticket will also provide you access to the adjacent Chinese garden and Kuan Yin Temple, which are also worth checking out.

If you only have time to visit either Bendigo Joss House Temple or the Gold Dragon Museum, I would suggest visiting Gold Dragon Museum for sure. Joss House Temple is fabulous, but it is very small and functions more as a place of worship. In comparison, Gold Dragon Museum provides a more comprehensive experience with its museum, classic Chinese garden, and Kuan Yin Temple.

Rosalind Park

Rosalind Park

After visiting Gold Dragon Museum, you may wish to also check out the beautiful Rosalind Park nearby.

Rosalind Park is a stunning Victorian-style garden along Bendigo Creek , between Park Road and View Street.

Within Rosalind Park, you can find a range of adorable plants and trees, many of which are also listed on the heritage register. There is also a beautiful 3-tiered water fountain near Poppet Head Lookout & worth checking out.

Poppet Head Lookout

Poppet Head Lookout

Poppet Head Lookout is situated on top of Camp Hill , right next to the beautiful Rosalind Park. Poppet Head Lookout got its name because it was originally used as a Poppet Head at the Golden Gully United Mine before being re-erected at its current location in 1931 as a lookout platform.

At Poppet Head Lookout, there are a few flights of stairs between the base and the top lookout platform. Unfortunately, no lifts or wheelchair access is available to the lookout platform.

Once arrived at the top lookout platform, you will be greeted with an unparalleled panoramic view of Rosalind Park, Bendigo city, and the surrounding suburbs. It is the best place to admire this remarkable city and to re-orientate yourself.

Access to Poppet Head Lookout is free . It opens early in the morning (but after sunrise) & closes just after sunset. If time allows, you may wish to also come back to Poppet Head Lookout for a spectacular sunset view at a later time & it will not disappoint.

Bendigo Art Gallery

Bendigo Art Gallery

Bendigo Art Gallery is one of the oldest and largest regional art galleries in Australia. It houses a good collection of European, British, and Australian paintings from the 1800s onwards .

In addition to its permeant collections, Bendigo Art Gallery also houses a range of popular temporary art exhibitions.

Bendigo Town Hall

Bendigo City Centre

After visiting Bendigo Art Gallery, make sure you take a stroll from Charing Cross to explore Bendigo’s grand Victorian-era architecture.

From Charing Cross, I suggest taking a walk towards Bull Street along Pall Mall, then turn right onto Bull Street to check out Hargreaves Street and Chancery Lane. Along this walk, you will be walking past a range of historic landmarks, such as Alexandra Fountain, Soldiers Memorial, the old Post Office building, Bendigo Magistrates’ Court, and Bendigo Town Hall.

Among these historic buildings, I highly suggest checking out the Old Post Office building . Although it is currently used as Bendigo Visitor Centre , this marvellous Victorian building is still radiating an old-world charm. There are also small museums/exhibitions within the Old Post Office building, showcasing Bendigo’s glorious past and a good collection of local arts.

Make sure you also check out the buzzing Chancery Lane , which is tucked between Pall Mall and Hargreaves Street. In Chancery Lane, you can find a range of quirky cafes, unique stores, and interesting mural arts. It is a great place to take a break after a busy morning.

Sacred Heart Cathedral

Sacred Heart Cathedral

Sacred Heart Cathedral is a grand sandstone cathedral, built in 1897 . With its main spire at 87 metres tall , Sacred Heart Cathedral is the third tallest cathedral in Australia and the largest Gothic cathedral in the Southern Hemisphere .

This grand cathedral is the most prominent building you will notice from Poppet Head Lookout & you will also be seeing this picturesque cathedral from many street corners around Bendigo.

Sacred Heart Cathedral is open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday when no mass or other church events are happening (as of May 2022). Make sure you take a walk to admire this majestic cathedral from within if you happen to be there during its visiting hours.

Access to Sacred Heart Cathedral is free , but donations are welcomed.

When I visited, there was also a friendly gentleman providing helpful information about Sacred Heart Cathedral to all its visitors.

Great Stupa of Universal Compassion

Great Stupa of Universal Compassion

The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is a replica of the 600-year-old Great Stupa of Gyantse in Tibet . With 50-metre in height and width, the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is the largest stupa outside of Asia .

In addition to its sheer size, the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is also famous for its 2.5-metre high Jade Buddha statue. It is the largest gemstone Buddha statue in the world.

Around the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion, you can also find a large garden with a range of statues and prayer wheels around. It was really calming to take a walk around this garden and enjoy some solitude.

Cafe and gift shop are also available at the entrance, so you can grab a bite and some unique gifts.

Entry to the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is free , but donations are welcomed.

Access to the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is by driving or taxi only. There is no public transport available to the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion.

The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is about a 20-minute drive from Bendigo . There is also a section of rough dirt road before arriving at the stupa, but it will be well worth the drive!

Classic Chinese Garden at Gold Dragon Museum

How to Get to Bendigo

Visiting bendigo by car.

Visiting Bendigo by car is the easiest and most convenient way of visiting Bendigo.

Bendigo is only a less than 2-hour drive from Melbourne ; a 1.5-hour drive from Ballarat ; a 2.5-hour drive from Geelong and Halls Gap ; a 7-hour drive from Adelaide .

Visiting Bendigo by Public Transport

Direct train service is available between Melbourne and Bendigo , which makes it really easy to visit Bendigo from Melbourne by public transport. A visit to Bendigo from Melbourne CBD only takes less than 2 hours by train.

Once you have arrived at Bendigo Station, most of the attractions on this itinerary are only a short bus ride away. Since Bendigo is a relatively small city, you can even walk to many of these attractions from Bendigo Station. The only place you will need to catch a taxi or use a ride-share service to visit is the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion.

If you are visiting Bendigo via public transport from other Victorian cities, it can be tricky. There is no direct train service between Geelong/Ballarat and Bendigo . Hence, visiting Bendigo by train will take almost 3 hours from Geelong and 2.5 hours from Ballarat.

This Summer in Paris: More ‘Open’ Signs, Thanks to the Olympics

With millions of visitors expected in the city, restaurant and shop owners are hoping they made the right decision to forgo their cherished annual vacations.

A view of the rooftops of Paris. Multistory stone buildings with iron balconies line a leafy street that leads to an imposing building with columns. The Eiffel Tower pokes above the horizon, which is bathed in pink light.

By Lindsey Tramuta

Anyone who’s visited Paris in late July and August knows the word “fermé.” It adorns the darkened windows of chic indie boutiques and cozy bistros whose owners, along with other locals, have fled the city on their annual vacations.

This summer, with Paris expected to draw nearly 15 million visitors between July 26 and Sept. 8 for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, that ritual is anything but certain. Many shopkeepers, bakers, restaurateurs and tour guides — citing patriotism as well as profit — say they’re planning to stay open.

It’s a decision that comes with unpredictability. The 2012 London Olympics have cast a long shadow in Paris. Before those Games, warnings of overcrowded roads, congested transit and security concerns emptied out much of the popular city center and the West End, causing a tourism slump in those areas. Small-business owners in Paris are hoping history does not repeat itself.

The French capital is in a better position than the British capital was, insisted Pierre Rabadan, Paris’s deputy mayor for sports . Most of the events in London were held in one section of the city, he said, while in Paris, they’re taking place all over. “So when businesses have asked if they should stay open,” he explained, “we tell them we’re trying to create the conditions for this to be a real opportunity and for the city to function normally.”

With streets restricted, Metro stations closed and public transportation likely to be jammed, “normally” might be a stretch. But if you’re traveling to Paris for the Olympics or Paralympics, you will most likely find more dining and shopping options than you would otherwise see at that time of year. Here’s what to expect.

Preparations and a few disruptions

“If you want to have your ‘Emily in Paris’ trip to Paris this summer, you absolutely can,” said Olivia Grégoire, France’s minister in charge of tourism . Most popular attractions will remain open as normal, but a few closures could complicate plans.

The Place de la Concorde was set to be blocked off, even to pedestrians and cyclists, as of June 1, and three nearby Metro stations will close until Sept. 21.

The Eiffel Tower will remain open except for the eve and day of the opening ceremony, on July 26. The region’s airspace will also be closed for six hours before and during that event. And because the opening ceremony is set to take place on the Seine, river cruises, among the city’s most popular sightseeing experiences, will stop seven days before the ceremony and resume on July 27 at noon.

Owners of businesses that focus on tours and cultural experiences are banking on early-summer visitors to soften the blow that might come from a drop-off during the Games, after the Paris Tourist Office reported that participation in cultural activities was down 15 percent during the London Olympics.

Fat Tire Tours , a leading bike tour company, will run special Olympics-themed tours in early summer, then pivot to bike rentals during the Games to compensate for an expected drop in tour bookings.

Jane Bertch, a co-owner of La Cuisine Paris cooking school, which offers English-language classes in a location near City Hall, said she had noticed a sharp drop in bookings for late summer, but will “run as many classes as possible.”

Rising to the challenge

The Olympic crowds will bring appetites for Paris’s renowned cuisine, but for months, restaurateurs worried that restrictions on motorized vehicles in security zones around the city’s 25 competition venues could curtail deliveries. City officials have calmed some of those nerves.

“We don’t want restaurants to close during this monumental event because they’re worried about deliveries,” said Grégoire Ambroselli, a co-founder of the food logistics start-up Choco , during an Olympics-related conference in March.

Now, armed with more clarity on how to adapt to delivery challenges, most restaurants and bakeries report they will stay open during the Games, with one big caveat: Many plan to take a break between the closing ceremony, on Aug. 11, and the start of the Paralympics, on Aug. 28.

Maslow , a soaring, centrally located vegetarian restaurant facing the Seine, wouldn’t dream of closing, given its proximity to the Olympic action. But that decision comes with some unease. “We’re staying positive because the energy will be incredible, but we’re a bit worried about how hard it will be for our staff to get to work,” said the executive chef, Mehdi Favri, who is also a co-owner.

Commuting has ranked high among businesses’ concerns. However, locals have faced similar hurdles getting to work before. In 2019, trains across France and public transport in Paris were severely disrupted for nearly two months during a nationwide pension reform strike, forcing workers to walk or cycle long distances.

André Terrail, the owner of the Michelin-starred restaurant La Tour d’Argent , which overlooks the Seine, doesn’t think the Olympic commutes will be quite that complex but admits such challenges, in general, are the price of doing business in Paris. “It’s going to be complicated. We’re all going to be running around. But it’s also going to be amazing,” he said. “If other host cities have found solutions, so will we.”

Etheliya Hananova, a co-owner and sommelier at the contemporary French restaurant Comice , is perhaps the most enthusiastic about the summer ahead — enough to remain open seven days a week for three weeks through Aug. 10. “It’s one of the biggest events in the history of Paris. We’re here to be part of the welcoming committee,” she said.

The scaling-back of the opening ceremony on the Seine has given the antique booksellers, or “bouquinistes,” that line its banks a reprieve, and many plan to stay open. Shoppers will also be able to browse in department stores such as Galeries Lafayette , Printemps and Le Bon Marché . For those seeking something unconventional, the St.-Ouen flea market will sprawl out as usual, offering antiques, vintage clothing and more.

Outside the tourist areas, popular restaurants and bars like Holybelly , Folderol , Kubri , Abricot Le Mary Celeste and Fulgurances aim to draw visitors seeking a break from the crowds. “We’ve decided to open more — six days a week,” said Rebecca Asthalter, a co-owner of Fulgurances . Likewise, independent boutiques such as Landline , which sells home goods in a residential neighborhood east of the Bastille, are hoping travelers branch out to calmer parts of the city.

Back in the thick of the action, Marin Montagut, an artist and illustrator who sells hand-painted table accessories, stationery, silk scarves and candles from an apothecary-style boutique near the Luxembourg Gardens, is planning a Paris-inspired display of his wares. “I’m looking at this like it’s the World’s Fair. I want to honor the city and be open to all,” he said. “If I’m not optimistic during this period, when will I be?”

Amy Virshup contributed reporting.

Auburn freshman Jackson Koivun makes cut at the Memorial in PGA TOUR debut, one step closer to earning card

Change Text Size

DUBLIN, Ohio – Jackson Koivun’s list of accolades is already extensive. The 19-year-old college freshman became the first golfer in NCAA history to sweep the three collegiate Player of the Year awards and Freshman of the Year in the same season. He also led Auburn to its first national championship title.

He can add a made cut in his PGA TOUR debut to that list.

Koivun birdied two of his final five holes to finish 4-over and inside the cutline through 36 holes at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. With the made cut, Koivun earned his 15th point in PGA TOUR University’s Accelerated Program. He is five points from reaching the 20-point threshold and earning a TOUR member. He would join Gordon Sargent as the only golfer to hit the threshold.

“I think today is probably the hardest golf conditions and course I ever played," Koivun said. "I'm pretty happy with how I played. It means so much to come out here with that sponsor's exemption and hopefully make the cut and play this weekend.”

Jackson Koivun cards birdie at the Memorial

Koivun earned a spot in the Memorial by winning the Jack Nicklaus Award, given by the Golf Coaches Association of America to the player of the year. Koivun also won the Ben Hogan Award, Haskins Award and Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award. He’s the first golfer to win all four in a single season.

Koivun won twice in his freshman season, including the SEC Championship. He finished in the top 10 in 12 of his 13 stroke-play starts and had the lowest adjusted scoring average (67.3) in Division I. He earned the clinching point in Auburn’s semifinal match in the NCAA Championship, which went to extra holes. Then he earned Auburn’s first point in the national championship against Florida State.

Koivun shot 4-over 76 on Friday after opening with a round of even-par 72. It was needed breathing room during a difficult second round with strong wind gusts and firming greens. Koivun was 5-over through 10 holes after making a double on the opening hole of the back nine, but the teenager found something with his swing on 11th hole. He made three straight pars before holing back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 to play himself back inside the cutline.

“In the back of my mind I'm like, you got a lot of birdie holes coming up and it could move to 5, so as long as you get through 10 or 11 and 12, they were playing straight in the wind and playing really hard, I had some good opportunities coming in, just needed to play smart coming through.”

He holed a 14-foot birdie on the 14th, found the green in two on the par-5 15th, and made a comfortable two-putt birdie. Koivun nearly grabbed another on the 18th but ran his mid-range birdie putt 5 feet by the hole. He missed the comebacker for a closing bogey, but that didn’t dampen his mood.

“It’s awesome,” Koivun said of his made cut.

Koivun’s quest for 20 PGA TOUR University Accelerated points now looks like a matter of 'when' not 'if'. Koivun has more than two years to earn five points after earning 15 in his freshman season. He is likely guaranteed to earn two more this summer. Currently No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Koivun will jump to No. 2 and earn another point once Christo Lamprecht makes his first professional start. Koivun will earn another point when he competes in the Palmer Cup in July.

Another point is still up for grabs this weekend. Koivun could earn his 16th point with a top-10 finish. He was tied for 45th when he walked off Muirfield Village on Friday afternoon.

“Every point is so valuable now, trying to make that push to get to 20,” Koivun said. “Hopefully I can get a couple more starts and kind of earn that TOUR card … but I'm looking forward to what the future has.”

The future is very bright.
