Beyt dwarka – visit the golden city of mahabharata.

Beyt Dwarka is the first place I visited on my trip to Dwarka. We drove from my hotel towards the holy place 36 km away. 30 km on land and 5 km on the sea is what you need to cover before you set foot on the island of Beyt Dwarka also called Bet Dwarka and Shankhodhar.

Dwarka to Beyt Dwarka

Boat Ride from Dwarka to Beyt Dwarka

We pass through the city of Dwarka which is locally called Gomti Dwarka on our left, Rukmini Temple on our right followed by vast stretches of dry land all around. Then came the hillocks of unprocessed salt – in shades of grey. Tata Chemicals – the producer of the popular salt brand Tata Salt has its manufacturing facility at Mithapur. Mithapur in Gujarati means salt city. There are Navy offices on the left and then we see the jetty full of colorful boats on our right.

Seagulls that fly with you from Dwarka to Beyt Dwarka

We walk through the lines of shops selling corals, sea plants, wooden toys, and Puja material.

At the jetty, there are many boats lined up but only one boat is taking passengers. We board the boat that seems nearly full but it would not move unless it is filled to the brim. A young boatman would go around making space in between people and ensure the full productivity of the boat trip. Well, this is the public boat that costs you just Rs 20/- to cross over.

You can hire a private boat to go to Beyt Dwarka but that would cost you upwards of Rs 2000/-

Sea Shells on Sale

The boat ride is about 10-15 mins. However, the seagulls that live between the two shores would never let you have a dull moment. If you buy the bird and fish feed that is sold on the shore, you can invite the birds closer to the boat. It is a delight to be surrounded by so many of these white seagulls. They seem to be used to entertaining the boat riders – of course, the fee is that you have to feed them.

The etymology of Beyt Dwarka

Jetty at Bet Dwarka

Beyt Dwarka is also known as Bet Dwarka or Bhent Dwarka and each of these names has a story associated with them.

Beyt or Bet in Gujarati means a space surrounded by water or an island. So the island that got cut off from Dwarka by water is called Beyt Dwarka.

Another legend associated with the name is that this is the place where Sudama – the poor friend of Sri Krishna came to meet him. Yes, the famous Krishna Sudama story took place here. You can hear the story inside the temple several times a day, every day. This story would make the name Bhent Dwarka. Bhent means meeting, referring to the meeting of Krishna Sudama.

The place is also called Beyt Shankhodhar. Read the legend below on how it gets this name.

Things you can buy at Beyt Dwarka – Corals, Conch Shells, Toys and Indrajaal

Some people also say that it is Shankh or Conch-shaped, but I would assume that the island would have changed shape over a period of time. On Google Maps, it does look like an elongated Conch.

Other names of the place include Ramandweep – the beautiful island, Krishna Vilas Nagari, or the pleasure city of Krishna and Kalarkot.

Beyt Dwarka History & Legends

Beyt Dwarka

Dwarka, as we know, was the golden city of Sri Krishna, where he ruled as a king. He is known as Ranchor Rai and Dwarkadhish here. Ranchor Rai literally means the one who ran away from the war – which is what Sri Krishna did when he left Mathura to re-establish his kingdom at Dwarka. Dwarkadhish means the lord of the Dwarka. Jai Dwarkashish is how people greet each other in this town.

Palaces of 16108 Queens

The popular belief is that Gomti Dwarka is where the Kingdom of Sri Krishna was and this is where he had his pleasure palaces. This is where he lived with his 16108 queens and each of them had a palace of her own. What you see today is a small part of the original golden Dwarka that is left.

Sudama visits Sri Krishna

Sadhu

Sudama studied with Sri Krishna in Sandipini Ashram that as per my research should be in Ujjain or Avantika. Sudama came from Porbandar which is about 100 km away from Dwarka and is better known for being the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi.

While Sudama was poor, Sri Krishna was the king. When Sudama had nothing to eat, he came to meet Sri Krishna and carried a few grains of rice as a gift for his friend – for that is all he had. Sri Krishna welcomed him into his palace as a treasured guest and sent him back after accepting his gift. What Sudama did not know is that help had already reached his village before he could return.

This story is always told to children to highlight the value of true friends in life. You can hear this story inside the Dwarkadhish temple. You are also encouraged to donate some rice to the Brahmins who take care of the temple. The belief is you will be rewarded in the same way as Sudama was.

Shankhasur and Shankhodhar Teertha

Legend is that an Asura named Shankhasur used to live at this place as it stands today. Sri Krishna slayed the asura at a place where Shankh Sarovar stands today. He did it in his Matsyavatar or fish form. Shakha Sarovar can be still seen with many birds around it. A small but ancient Shiva temple stands on its banks.

Last Days of Mira Bai

Mira Bai Temple at Beyt Dwarka

We know that Mira Bai of Chittorgarh in Mewar was an ardent Krishna devotee. Mira Bai spent her last days here. The story goes that she came here from Mewar and spent time singing the songs of Krishna. One day, she asked if she can offer the Bhog to Krishna. Priests knew she is a Raj Rani or a great queen and that she was one of the biggest devotees of Krishna, so they allowed her to offer Bhog.

As Mira Bai offered the Bhog to Krishna, she merged with Krishna. It is said that only a small piece of her Sari survived and that was put on the idol of Krishna. It is up to you to believe it or not. I think the story is just a way to say that Mira Bai spent her last days here.

Temples at Beyt Dwarka

We expect the place to be full of temples. Its life revolves around the temple of Dwarkadhish primarily. Most other temples are hardly visited. I tried to visit a few temples and here is what I saw.

Dwarkadhish Temple

Dwarkadhish Temple Entrance

Sri Krishna temple is the most important temple at Beyt Dwarka. It is the reason that millions of pilgrims take boat rides from Okha. This is not one temple but a group of many small temples.

The Murti of Sri Krishna here at the Dwarkadhish temple is believed to be built by Rukmini 5244 years ago after Sri Krishna left his body. Rukmini is one of the chief queens of Sri Krishna, who incidentally has no temple in this temple complex.

Daily rituals at this temple include 13 times Bhog, 9 times Arti, and 22 darshans of the deities.

Sri Krishna temple here has no Shikhara just like Nathdwara . It has a normal flat roof as houses have. Well, it is not without reason. This is not the temple technically speaking but the house where Sri Krishna lives with his family.

Temples in Dwarkadhish Temple Complex

So, you see the temples dedicated to the following members of his family:

Radhika Rani Temple

Radha is known as Golok Maharani here. There is a beautiful temple with wooden door frames and carved wooden brackets dedicated to her. For where there is Krishna, Radha cannot be far. However, her temple is not attached to the main temple of Sr Krishna. She is there but she stays outside the complex that houses Sri Krishna, his brother, his sons, and his wives.

Radha’s Murti is Achal or Utsav Murti i.e. it is not a fixed Murti but it goes out and comes back. It comes out on Sharad Purnima and for one month during the month of Saavan, it is out of the temple.

Image of Dwarkadhish in all his finery

The heart of Dwarkadhish temple is the Murti of Sri Krishna which is believed to have been built by Rukmini herself. You can see him in different Shringar throughout the day, On special days like Janamashtmi, there is even more elaborate Shringar that is done. The silver door of Krishna’s temple has a Sun, Moon, Shankha or conch shell, Chakra or wheel, Gada or mace, and Padam or lotus flower carved on it. On the bottom panels is Sri Krishna as the cowherd playing his flute next to his cow.

Krishna’s elder brother is here as Trivikram – it is an old murti in black stone with four arms.

Krishna Rukmini’s son Pradyuman is present as Kalyan Rai.

Purushottam Rai

The deity of Adhik Maas or Mal Maas, the additional month that comes every 3-4 years in the lunar calendar followed in India is present in the brownstone with a cot by his side.

The mother of Sri Krishna is also in the brownstone in a small murti in the same courtyard as Krishna. At Dwarka, there is no mention of Yashoda, it is always the Devaki who is there at the temples dedicated to her son.

When you take Parikrama of the central courtyard you come across other temples in this sequence:

Mahalaxmi Temple

Mahalaxmi is identified as his Patrani or chief queen. Rukmini is also considered the avatar of Mahalakshmi. There is a black stone idol and has a temple of her own.

Madhav Rai Ji who I was told was the Kaka or uncle of Krishna is present as the presiding deity of Kumbh Mela that happens in Prayag.

There is a temple dedicated to Amba Ji – the Kul Devi of Sri Krishna.

Here at one of the courtyards, a priest tells the story of Beyt Dwarka in 3 mins. People gather and sit down to listen to Katha or the story. The priest tells the story of Shankhasur, Krishna, and Sudama and the importance of visiting Dwaraka & in the end advises people to donate rice.

There are temples dedicated to Govardhan and Sheshavatar with a Sheshnag Chhatri.

There is a temple dedicated to Satyanarayan – the deity of the Kaliyug . The murti of Satyanarayan is in white marble.

Sakshi Gopal

An Utsav murti that travels on behalf of the Achal Murti of Dwarkashish here. This is supposed to be the deity of your pilgrimage to Dwarka Dham. It is a witness to the Dwarka yatra or pilgrimage you do. This is the first time I saw deities who stand witness to your Dwarka visit as if they keep count of your travels.

Laxmi Narayan is how Vishnu and his Shakti are present as a couple in black stone at Dwarkadhish Temple here.

There is a temple dedicated to his son and grandson – Pradyuman and Aniruddh and another one to his Kul Guru – Rishi Durvasa.

Jamvanti – Second queen of Sri Krishna and daughter of bear king Jambavan.

Satyabhama – Third queen of Sri Krishna and daughter of the treasurer of Dwarka – Satrajit.

He also gets a place in the temple. As the vaahan or vehicle of Vishnu, people believed he took Sri Krishna every morning to Gomti Dwarka where his capital was and every evening brought him back to his palace at Beyt Dwarka.

Matsyavatar Temple

It is interesting how the Pandas describe each deity with reference to Sri Krishna. When they talk about a deity in the temple, they tell you how he or she is related to Krishna, what they are responsible for, and who else they are related to.

Krishna Leela

The walls of Sri Krishna temple are relatively new and have scenes of Krishna Leela carved on them. I could see Krishna as Makhan Chor stealing butter from Handi, Krishna playing bansuri or flute in Kadamba Van , and Krishna holding the Govardhan Parvat on his little finger as Govardhandhari . Some interesting panels include Krishna holding an elephant with its tail. I must add there are limited scenes and most other carvings are geometric designs and floral patterns.

Outside the walls of the Queen’s temples, I saw the red hand marks. I was curious and the priest could only tell me that these are made during festivals like Diwali and Holi.

The first temple you see as you enter the temple premises is Ganesha Temple which has a standing idol of Ganesha.

Dandi Hanuman Temple

Dandi Hamunan Temple or Makardhwaj Temple

We took an auto outside the Dwarkadhish temple to go to Dandi Hanuman temple which is a good 5 km away. Road, if it can be called so, goes through the narrowest part of the island of Beyt Dwarka. We go along the seashore and auto stops in front of a small non-descript temple. There are a couple of small shops outside the temple.

Temple inside is a very small one – almost a cave temple. It has two murtis – one of Hanuman that looks like it is sinking into the floor. The other one belongs to his son Makardhwaj . So, this is a temple dedicated to father and son.

Dandi Hanuman Makardhwaj idol

A story from Ramayana when Sri Ram and Lakshmana were abducted by Ahiravan and Mahiravan – the kings of Patal happened at this place. Makardhwaj was the guardian of their palace. The Ramayana link makes the island even were ancient than Sri Krishna’s time.

When I reached this temple, Hanuman Chalisa was being chanted. I joined in chanting and waited for the temple door to open. It is a people’s temple without any royal patronage and continues to be so. Although a Dharamshala has turned up around it.

It is believed that if you offer a Supari to Hanuman here, your wish will be fulfilled.

Mira Bai Temple

In the lanes of the town is a small temple dedicated to Mira Bai.

Talaav or Lakes in Beyt Dwarka

There are two main Talaavs that I could see here. I am sure there must have been more when the island had no undersea pipeline bringing drinking water to them. Since they have easy access to water, the ponds have lost their practical value and they lie in neglect. Never mind the ancient stories associated with them.

Shankh Sarovar

Shankh Sarovar

This is a fairly large lake for the size of the island with stepped ghats all around it. When I visited in March, there was hardly any water. Birds still hovered around the lake. A small temple of Neelkanth stands at the entrance of the Sarovar. There is a ruined temple and another practicing one.

This is the place where Sakshi Gopal Murti comes in for Parikrama when it comes out of the Dwarkadhish temple.

This is also where the procession comes for Krishna – Rukmini wedding that takes place two days after Ram Navami.

Ranchhor Talaav

It is also a reasonably sized pond with a carved entrance path. It was built by the Gaikwads of Baroda who ruled this region for some time.

My guide and driver Jayesh is a native of the place. When he saw me asking too many questions, he took me to his grandfather Sh Varsingh Mala Rabari, who is 92 years old and worked at the library of the heritage place. Unfortunately, the library was lost in the earthquake of 2007. I am fortunate that I could meet Varsingh Ji and listen to his stories.

Rabari man from Gujarat

He told me about Bhai Mohkam Singh – one of the Panch Pyare of Guru Gobind Singh was from this holy island. In fact, there is a Gurudwara next to Shankh Sarovar on the island. 5 Pyares were considered the first 5 Sikhs, so that makes the holy island important for followers of Sikh Dharma too.

It has a population of roughly 10,000 people. Of this, 8000 are Muslims who are mostly engaged in fishing. The 2000 Hindus primarily live in the Dwarkadheesh Temple economy. In a way, Krishna is still a source of their survival.

Rabaris – the pastoral community that traces its lineage to lives on the island of Beyt Dwarka.

Boats lined up to ferry pilgrims

  • Ferry boats from Okha are the only way to reach the island of Beyt Dwarka. A bridge connecting the island to the mainland is in the plans, but it would be a few years before it comes up.
  • Boats operate from 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM or so. Most boats operate during the first half of the day when pilgrims visit the temple or in the evening when the temple opens again. All temples close around 12 noon and re-open in the evening around 5 PM.
  • No photography is allowed inside any temple.
  • There are not many eating places in the town, so it is best to have a heavy breakfast and go and come back by lunchtime.
  • Water bottles are available but I suggest you carry your own.
  • To travel within the island, you can use auto-rickshaws. If you have time and if the sun is bearable, you can easily walk around the island.
  • There are no good hotels in the town, most people stay at Hotels in Dwarka .
  • There are many organized tours.

Such an amazing place. Wanted to visit Dwarka last year. Now I am definitely visiting this year. Thank You for such an informative blog.

Very good information,it is nice to read about deities.Have u come across anything that relates to end of Krishna’s tenure on earth… is there any specific detail about how the whole city Dwarika was drowned in the river.

Sarita – there is archaeological evidence of a submerged city of the times of Mahabharat. Stay tuned for my next posts on Dwarka, I would try to write about this aspect.

So beautiful place. Thanks for your informative post.

Thank you, Rupam. Glad you enjoyed the post on Bet Dwarka.

There is a pond in which the GOPI(white coloured soil)will be collected by SriKrishna Bhaktas.

Yes Sir -Gopi Talaav is on the mainland close to Dwarka and Nageshwar Jyotirlinga. I would be writing about it soon. I also brought some Gopi Chandan from there for my family and friends.

This article took me down the memory lane of all the places that I had visited during my visit. The article is beautifully scripted.

Thank you, Savita Ji. Let us plan a trip together sometime soon.

Such a beautiful place which I never heard of it before. Very informative, beautiful pictures and well written . I could visualize the sea gulls following the boat. Thanks!

Thank you Sarguna Ji.

Such a nice travel story from my hometown 🙂 yes, my hometown is located around 35KM from Dwarka and I have been to these places many times.

Have you got a chance to visit 84 Dhunas? A place located at walking distance from Hanuman Dandi. Very ancient and historical place.

You have a beautiful home, Jignesh. No, I missed the 84 Dhunas – No one at Dandi Hanuman temple told me about it. What is it – can you please share more information on it.

Although I knew of the Krishna Sudama meeting but didn’t really know that the name Bhent means meeting, and that is why the place is referred to with this title, referring to the meeting of Krishna Sudama! The depths of ancient cultures never cease to amaze me. I was amazed to learn how the pandas in the temple could explain the association of each of the deities with Krishna. It must be a great cultural and religious trip to take.

Neha, we have all grown up on the stories of Sr Krishna and his golden Dwarka, so it is an experience to stand in those places even though they look nothing like we imagine them to be.

the old man mr varshing bhai rabari is my grand father . he was share many secret of beyt dwarka and he pass also 7th standard but his knowledge is unbelivable not only knowledge of beyt dwarka but also knowledge of gujrat in history and i thankedd to you meet my grandpaa and collect the knowledge

Bharat Bhai – you are very blessed to have a learned grandfather. I am thankful to Varshingh ji and all your family for spending time with me and allowing me to learn a bit from Dadaji. Jai Dwarkadheesh.

Such an interesting article, Anuradha! I have heard about Beyt Dwarka from my dad who visited the place sometime in the 90s. Temple towns have such intriguing history.

Mohana -yes, temple town like Beyt Dwarka have been witness to our history since time immemorial.

Very informative blog post, you have covered almost every aspect of Dwarka. I am a big fan of the Indian heritage and this was one of the places to visit on my bucket-list. The best part is- your style of writing.

I read that the excavation process was stopped all of a sudden, and all the people involved are not reachable. Is that true? Any updates on this Dwarka excavation?

The excavation was done for few years. To the best of my knowledge, it was not stopped suddenly. NIO – the organization that did the excavations can be reached. Some of the people involved in the excavations have passed on or retired, so in that sense maybe not. But Dr. S R Rao has documented everything in his book – The Lost city of Dwarka. I have read the book, and I see lack of funds as the only reason for no further excavations.

Hello Anuradha ji. I also happened to meet Jayesh bhai Babaria. I went for two days trip to Dwarka from Ahmedabad. I put up in Mercure hotel and it was then that I hired the hotel cab to go around Dwarka and visit places. Jayesh bhai indeed is an interesting person and shared lot of information about all the places wherever he took me. So, next time when I visit Dwarka again, I would love to visit his grandfather at Beyt Dwarka…

That is a lovely co-incidence Neeru. Jayesh keeps me connected to Dwarka. I hope this blog helps him in some way.

HELLO I WANTED TO KNOW AS THERE ANY SUCH PLACE NEAR BYET DWARKA . WHERE WE GO UNDERWATER BY SUBMARINE AND SEE. WHERE THE OLD TEMPLE OF DWARKA WAS THERE.

PLEASE HELP ME OUT WITH IT .

Aditi, as far as I know, tourists can not go underwater at Dwarka.

Just came back yesterday from Dwarka / Bheyt Dwarka … You have described the Lost city quite well without bias. One more observation I made was the pathetic situation of Cows in this old Krishna Nagari… All the cows I saw were surviving on packaging paper or newspapers on the road mixed with plastic or foil…. Can’t seem to forget this since last 2 days

Anyway … well written article.. Anuradha Commendable effort… ????????

Thank you for writing good information about lord Sri Krishna and Dwarka city.

At a distance of 33 km from Dwarka Railway Station, Beyt Dwarka is an inhabited island located off the coast of Dwarka on Gulf of Kutch. Also known as Beyt Shankhodhar, it was one of the main ports of the town before the development of Okha and is among the popular places to visit in Dwarka. Bet Dwarka or Beyt Dwarka is an extremely sacred pilgrimage destination as it is believed to be the original home of Lord Krishna during his ruling years at Dwarka. It is said that lord Krishna resided with his family at Bet Dwarka. The place derived its name from the word 'beyt' which means meeting and this is the place where Sudhama came to meet his friend Lord Krishna. Beyt Dwarka is also mentioned in the ancient epic, 'Mahabharata' as 'Antardvipa' to which people of the Yadava clan needed to travel by boat. The island is also known as Shankhodhar as the island is source of conch shells. The ASI explorations revealed that the presence of certain settlements whose age can be traced back to the era of the Harappan civilization and that of the Mauryan rule. Dwarka is mentioned in the copper inscription dated 574 AD of Simhaditya, the minister of Vallabhi under Maitraka. The region was previously under the administration of the Gaekwad clan of the state of Baroda. During the revolt of 1857, Vaghers attacked the region and captured it. After independence of India in 1947, the region became part of the Saurashtra state which later merged with the state of Bombay. When the state of Gujarat was carved out of the Bombay state, Bet Dwarka came under Jamnagar district of Gujarat and became part of Devbhoomi Dwarka district in 2013. Surrounded by sea from all sides, the island of Beyt Dwarka has a lot of temples, coral reefs and white sand beach. The main temple at Beyt Dwarka is Dwarkadhish Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, which is believed to be built on the residence of Lord Krishna and His family. This temple is over 500 years old and was built by Sri Vallabhacharya. In addition, one can also visit the temples of Shri Keshavraiji, Narasinhji, Hanuman Dandi and Vaishnav Mahaprabhu Baithak in Beyt Dwarka. There is a narrow street which leads to these temples that are crowded by vendors selling local crafts, idols, cassettes, coconut and seashells. The bet is surrounded by several sand beaches. Beyt Dwarka Beach is known for its isolation from usual noisy cities. The southeast most end of bet is known as Dunny Point which is three side surrounded by sea. Managed by Sundarvan and camping, it is the first place in Gujarat developed for ecotourism and is also the only marine sanctuary of Gujarat where one can spot few types of corals, crabs, turtles, dolphins etc. The island is has no electricity and mobile network. This is the end of the Beyt Dwarka Island and the site offers basic amenities like tented accommodation, and food for tourists. Tourists can reach this site by boat ride from Okha jetty it will take around 45 minutes. Tourists can also indulge in several activities like bird watching, water polo, kite flying, meditation and cruise vacations. For visiting Beyt Dwarka, travellers have to first reach Okha port jetty by rail or road, which is around 32 km from Dwarka. From there, tourists can hire a ferry or small boat to visit Beyt Dwarka, which is just 5 km from Okha. Public boats are available which is always crowded around 100 to 150 members per boat. One can also hire a private boat to reach Beyt Dwarka, but it is very costly. One can explore the island by walk or hire an auto from the jetty. • All About Bet Dwarka

All About Bet Dwarka

Bet Dwarka is an extremely sacred pilgrimage destination which is believed to have been the original home of Lord Krishna during his years spent in Dwarka as a king. The land is located off the coast of Dwarka on Gulf of Kutch. The other name for Bet Dwarka is Bet Shankhodara.

Bet Dwarka

Bet Dwarka is believed to have been the actual residential place of Lord Krishna during his ruling years at Dwarka. It is said the lord resided with his family at Bet Dwarka. The place derived its name from the ‘bet’ or ‘gift’ that Lord Krishna received at this place from his friend Sudama. In our ancient epic, ‘Mahabharata’ we often come across the reference of Bet Dwarka known by the name of ‘Antardvipa’ to which people of the Yadava clan needed to travel by boat. The island is also differently referred to Shankhodhar. The reason is that it is dotted with a huge number and variety of conch shells. Explorations and excavations carried out under the sea revealed the presence of certain settlements whose age can be traced back to the era of the Harappan civilization and that of the Mauryan rule. Inscription of Simhaditya dated 574AD also makes a mention of Dwarka. The region was previously under the administration of the Gaekwad clan of the state of Baroda. During the revolt of 1857, Vaghers attacked the region and captured it. Around 1859 the rebels were overthrown and the region was retrieved by its actual rulers. Post independence, the region became part of the Saurashtra state which later merged with the state of Bombay. When the state of Gujarat was carved out of the Bombay state, Bet Dwarka was included as part of Gujarat’s Jamnagar district.

Bet Dwarka has always stirred the curiosity of archaeologists probably because of the mythical claim that points out that this place actually had been lord Krishna’s original house in the yesteryears. It is also believed that a major part of the bet Dwarka land is now drowned into the sea due to continual coastal erosion. Thus archaeologists have carried out several explorations on the island and into the sea around the island so as to find some clue to the efficacy of these claims. The Marine Archaeology Centre of the National Institute of Oceanography had carried out series of explorations along the Bet Dwarka shore and intertidal zone around 1981-1994. As a result of these explorations, remains of several artifacts such as earthen pots etc were unearthed and these remains seem to belong to the Harappan age. Around the year 1982 a protection wall of length 580 meters was discovered and the wall dates back to as far as 1500BC. The various other artifacts excavated out consist in a seal of the late Harappan era, a jar with inscriptions on it, a sturdy copper fishhook, a coppersmith’s mould. The excavation site also brought to the fore many stone anchors and remains of wrecked ships thereby hinting at well developed trade connections with the Roman Empire. These findings thus reveal that all the mythical claims about Bet Dwarka may not be entirely false after all.

About Beyt Dwarka Temple

Sri Krishna lived and reigned as a king in the golden city of Dwarka, as is well known.

Lord Krishna lived in the mythical city of Dwarka. Dwarka is one of India’s seven holiest Hindu sites. Varanasi is considered the holiest of the seven sacred cities. It is believed that as a result of the sea’s damage and destruction. Dwarka has been submerged six times, making the modern Dwarka the region’s seventh such city.

The underwater city’s corals are diverse, ranging from tall sea fans to hydroids to sea anemones.

Beyt Dwarka Temple History

It is believed that Lord Krishna lived in Bet Dwarka, also known as Shankhodhar, while he was king of Dwarka. It is said that Lord Krishna got it as a present from his friend Sudama, and its name derives from the word “bet,” which means “gift.” The ancient epic Mahabharata refers to Bet Dwarka as “Antardvipa,” and it describes how Yadava clan members had to travel there by water. Settlements from the Harappan civilization and the Mauryan era have been found by underwater explorations and excavations.

Eventually, the region was ruled by the Gaekwad clan from the state of Baroda. The Vaghers attacked the region and took control of it during the rising in 1857, but after two years they were forced to accept defeat and return the land to the Gaekwads.

Here, he is referred to as Ranchor Rai and Dwarkadhish . Ranchor Rai, which refers to Sri Krishna when he left Mathura to reestablish his kingdom at Dwarka, literally means “the one who left the war.” The lord of Dwarka is referred to as “Dwarkadhish.” Jai Dwarkashish is the formal salutation used in this town to welcome one another.

Several temples in the complex worship Hanuman, Vishnu, Shiva, Lakshmi Narayan, Jambavati, Devi, and others in addition to the main temple.

Legend and etymology of beyt island.

Bet Dwarka or Beyt Island is called so because ‘bet’ or ‘beyt’ in Gujrati means a land surrounded by water on all sides. So this name is considered to be derived from the same word. Another story suggests that in olden days Lord Krishna used to live here. And as the legend goes, this is the exact same place where Lord Krishna also exchanged the famed bag of rice with his best friend Sudama. And a gift in hindi is called ‘bhent’. So the island came to be called ‘Bhent Island’. And over the year, ‘Bhent’ came to be called ‘Beyt’.

Beyt Dwarka Devboomi Dwarka

  • About Place

About The Place: A small island off the coast of Dwarka and accessed via Okha is home to the namesake temple, and supposedly the residence of Lord Krishna when he arrived here. The establishment of the temple is credited to Guru Vallabhacharya. Apart from the main temple, others in the complex commemorate Hanuman, Vishnu, Shiva, Lakshmi Narayan, Jambavati, Devi and others.

Brief History: Bet Dwarka, also known as Shankhodhar, is said to have been the residence of Lord Krishna during his ruling years at Dwarka. It derived its name from the word ‘bet’ which translates to ‘gift’ and is believed that Lord Krishna received it from his friend Sudama. In the ancient epic, Mahabharata, Bet Dwarka is known as ‘Antardvipa’ to which people of the Yadava clan needed to travel by boat. Explorations and excavations carried out under the sea have revealed the presence of settlements whose age can be traced back to the era of the Harappan civilization and that of the Mauryan rule. In the later years, the region was under the administration of the Gaekwad clan of the state of Baroda. During the revolt of 1857, Vaghers attacked the region and captured it, but had to concede defeat in two years and return the region back to the Gaekwads.

In February 2024, the grand inauguration of Sudarshan Setu marked a historic moment as it became the nation's longest cable bridge, seamlessly spanning the distance between Okha and Bet Dwarka. This monumental achievement further enriches the success narrative of Devbhoomi Dwarka, symbolizing its journey towards progress and development. As a prominent landmark within the district, Sudarshan Setu exemplifies the visionary aspirations of a developed Bharat and a flourishing Gujarat, encapsulating the essence of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Gujarat.

Best time to visit:  The best time to visit is between November and February, and during Janmashtami which is celebrated with great fervour.

bet dwarka places to visit

The Cultured Traveler  – A column exploring the many miles of what South Asia has to offer.

If you appreciate the vastness of the sea, boat rides, and heritage temples of India, then this place is for you. A place where you feel immersed in serenity one moment and the adventure in the next.

Okha is a small coastal town in the Dwarka district of Gujarat. It is surrounded by the sea on three sides and has a sandy beach on the Arabian Sea coast. BET Dwarka Island situated 3 km across a small creek from Okha port and reached by ferry, which was a memorable experience for me.  For the about 20-minute journey, you only have to pay Rs 20 per person. If you want to hire a personal boat, you will have to shell out Rs 4000.

For me, amidst the clean blue sky, hovering seagulls, and the coos of birds, the soothing cool breeze was like a tranquilizer.

Indeed, Bet Dwarka is a magical, beautiful, untouched, and enchanting island. This is a place on the western coast of India where I get the opportunity to see both the sunrise and sunset from the ocean. It is a lifetime memory. The long stretch of the Bet Dwarka beach is perfect for a long walk. The best part was that I did not find a lot of commercial activities here and it might be because Bet Dwarka beach was the first in Gujarat that the Government earmarked for eco-tourism development.

Archaeological Importance

The place derived its name from the ‘bhent’ or gift that Lord Krishna received at this place from his friend Sudama. The island is also called Shankhodhar as it is dotted with a huge number and variety of conch shells. Archaeological remains found under the sea suggest that there were settlements of the Harappan civilization from the Late Harappan Period or immediately after it, from the Indus Valley Civilization. It was an important shell-working center during the Harappan period. During the explorations in and around Bet Dwarka, a large number of antiquities of late Harappan period which include pottery, a seal, coins, etc, were found.

That is the reason Bet Dwarka has always stirred the curiosity of archaeologists. Probably because of the mythical claim that points that this place had been Lord Krishna’s original house in the yesteryears.

The Beauty of Nature

While getting to the jetty to board the boat, I saw people selling packets of bird feed. Not knowing why, I also bought some packets. And as soon as the boat left, seagulls flocked to the boat for the feed that’s in our hand. It’s was an incredible experience to see the gulls flying extremely low at such close range and even picking the feed from your palm. After getting down at the jetty, I walked for nearly 700 meters to reach the Lord Krishna temple. I saw hand-pulled trollies taking elderly persons to the temple. The main temple which closes at 12 noon, is believed to be built by Rukmini, wife of Lord Krishna. This is the place where Mirabai, the devotee of Krishna, disappeared at the feet of the Lord’s idol.

bet dwarka places to visit

Story of Sudhama and His Gift

The main temple here is Sri Keshavrai Ji Temple. Interestingly, here the idol holds the shankha (conch) in an oblique position. The temple is like a palace, built in pink limestone and filled with carvings. Small shrines are built for every queen of Krishna. Rukmani who is believed to have carved the idol here is not found, instead, Satyabhama, the second wife of Krishna, is very prominent here.

Devotees offer ‘rice’ here, which reminds one of the legendary tale that tells how Sudama, a friend of Krishna, had bought him ‘rice’ as a gift.

When Sudama decided to seek Krishna’s help, to come out from his poverty, his wife packed him a handful of Poha to offer to the Lord. Sudama was hesitant about how to give his gift to Krishna. Krishna asked what gift his friend has brought for him. Sudama tried to hide it but Krishna took it and ate the Poha and offered it to his wife. Sudama returned without asking for help. But a surprise awaited him back home! Instead of his broken hut, there stood a palace and his wife and children were dressed in expensive clothes. That’s when he realized of Lord Krishna’s magical powers.

Other Shrines

Apart from the main temple, there are various small shrines dedicated to Radha, Rukmani, Jambavati, Lakshmi-Narayan, Devki, Matsya form of Lord Vishnu, and many more. Hanuman Dandi temple of Bet Dwarka enshrines idols of Lord Hanuman and that of Makardhwaja – Hanuman’s son. According to myths, a drop of sweat from Hanuman Ji’s body was gulped by a fish who later delivered a son known by the name of Makardhwaja. Interestingly, the Bet Dwarka region has two Dargahs – Sidi Bawa Peer Dargah an Hajo Kirmil Dargah.

Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the temple, so better leave either in the hotel or you will have to keep them in the lockers specially made for this purpose.

Dwarka /Bet Dwarka

A temple that was….At least for me :(

Let me first tell you the route there is to reach Dwarka and Bet Dwarka and then probably you will realize the efforts I took to reach Bet dwarka.

I started from Porbandar around 9 in the morning and reached the Dwarka temple compound by 12.15. The ride in the bus was good, the roads being very well built and country side view very nice. The road runs parallel to sea shore mostly, so there were many windmills. The visiting time for Dwarka Temple is till 1 PM and hence I rushed in. Thankfully, there were not hours of crowd and I was able to get darshan.

To reach Bet Dwarka is another level of challenge even if you have an own vehicle. From Dwarka Temple, you first have to go to Bus stand just outside the temple compound from where you will get a bus to Okha , some 30 km far. Once you reach Okha, you can get a jetty to the island which houses the Bet Dwarka Temple.

You also see the salt town of Mithapur where there are many chemical factories of Tata, including that of salt. The town gets its name from gujarati word for salt “Mithu”.

I saw practically a whole village from Rajasthan (group of some 40-50 people) at Bet Dwarka. The Krishna/Sudama/Rukmini temples seem to have lots of pilgrims from Rajasthan. I got to know of one such tradition when I was in Sudama temple, Porbandar. Before a boy is married, he has to visit all such famous Krishna/Sudama temple in Gujarat and get stamps from same on a paper he has. Interesting!!

Well let me come to reasons why the day was bitter for me.

1) The bus I took from Porbandar to Dwarka, stopped at a hotel where there was no toilet, not even a dirty one. Please don’t ask me what happened next.

2) I was ill informed about the timings of both the temples. Now I don’t know why but they are being shut down from 1-5 pm. So for a person coming by bus who has to travel back some 3 hours to Porbandar, it becomes a problem. So even if the distance wise journey is not much, it is advised that you have a night halt at Dwarka. And this custom makes Dwarka unavailable for one day visit.

3) The jetty system from Okha to Bet Dwarka island is absolutely in chaos and 0% pilgrim friendly. There are like 100-200 boats, and there is a queue system for boats for their turn, a classics example of excess supply not able to meet demand. It pains me to realize, that despite the fact that state government had built excellent infrastructure to reach Dwarka, the last mile being Bet Dwarka was totally ignored. So its like “haathi nikal Gaya par Poonch reh gayi”. Let me elaborate the specific reason

a) So the system is like ‘ when the whole jetty fills up, only then it will leave from Okha’. So when you reach you wait for some uncertain time for the jetty to start.

b) Secondly, there are two kinds of boat, one for the villagers and one for the tourist. So villagers wala jetty doesn’t has to queue up or anything and can go anytime.

c) Tourist and villagers can’t switch on the boats. So when I went into the villagers wala jetty, the guy in charge scared me. He told me “madam aap chup jao is boat mein. Waise aap ko allowed toh nahi hai is mein le jaana, par fir bhi main aapko le chalta hu (Please hide in the boat, as it is meant for the villagers and not tourirst. But anyways I will take you.)”. Being alone I got shit scared, that should I continue or not, and even before I could decide, the jetty started. I was praying that please let it take me to my destination. The village people looked very strangely at me, adding more to my fears. The ride was some 10-15 minutes and even beautiful, but fear was my only feeling at the time.

4) After reaching the temple, I was told that it would only open at 5 pm, meaning that I would have to wait for nearly 2 hours before being even allowed inside. This again means that I would not be able to reach Porbandar before night. I requested the guard to at least let me see the temple from inside if not the idol, and he refused very brazenly that I will not be allowed inside.

That got me thinking. I don’t need to go inside a temple to see god. I am not at mercy of a doorman or a pandit to let me see god. I agree, I seek darshan whenever I visit a temple, but if the pujaris, pandit, guard are the ones to decide that I will get that darshan or not, then I have a problem, a person who doesn’t even has the decency to go and smoke somewhere else, yes he was smoking right on the gate of the temple. I got up, folded hands and left the temple.

I am educated enough to distinguish between belief and superstition

13. Monterey

Monterey, California

The perfect day trip for those looking to learn about California’s colonial past whilst enjoying spectacular coastal and mountain views, Monterey has a little something for everyone.

The gorgeous “Monterey’s 17-Mile Drive” is a scenic route featuring beaches, cliffs, headlands, and the world-famous Pebble Beach Golf Course.

Seal Rock Picnic Area is also a popular stop-off on the coast where you can see wild birds, seals and sea lions in their natural habitat.

For a dose of culture, head over to the Monterey Museum of Art, and for a foodie experience, try one of the many mouthwatering downtown eateries.

14. Berkeley

Berkeley, California

This famous university town north of San Francisco is as rich in history and culture as it is in academic knowledge.

Art lovers, foodies and shoppers all regularly take a trip here to make the most of the diverse range of activities and entertainment on offer.

A visit to the famed university itself is worthwhile, if only to see the beautiful grounds.

Downtown is a great place to try new things, whether it’s window shopping at quirky stores or browsing through the fresh produce at the absolutely enormous market, the Berkeley Bowl.

15. Pescadero

Piegon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero, California

Another charmingly quaint seaside town that offers both entertainment and exceptionally beautiful natural reserves is the area known as Pescadero.

About an hour away from San Jose, it is home to sandy beaches and blustery, rocky headlands where wild birds seasonally come and nest.

Home to endless hiking trails around the coast and further inland past coastal scrub and eucalyptus groves, Pescadero is exceedingly popular with hikers.

End your day at one of the many cafes or restaurants in town while you watch the sun set over the ocean.

10 Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose, CA

Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose, CA

Searching for the perfect weekend getaways from San Jose or elsewhere in the Bay Area? You’re in luck – there are plenty to choose from. In fact, one of my absolute favorite things about living in the South Bay is the abundance of day trips and weekend trips in close proximity to here.

Want to walk among the redwoods and scale epic mountain ranges? Or perhaps you’re in the mood for a quiet seaside escape, where you can stroll foggy shorelines and search for whales in the distance? Maybe you’re ready for a city break, where you can explore cultural attractions and sample world-class food? Or a wine country getaway, filled with leisurely brunches and boujee tastings?

Dog Friendly Accommodation Sonoma

Well, there’s a weekend getaway from San Jose to appeal to all of those desires…and many others! I’ve spent the past 2.5 years scouring California tourism websites, crossing off bucket list destinations, and discovering my own hidden gems throughout the state.

This list doesn’t cover every weekend trip from San Jose that I’ve enjoyed, but does include my top 10 favorites. Happy travels!

  • Yosemite National Park
  • Sonoma County
  • Napa Valley
  • San Luis Obispo
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea
  • Santa Cruz Mountains

Distance from San Jose: 2.5 hours

2 Day Big Sur Itinerary

I’m not sure I’ll ever find the words to do justice to the magic of Big Sur  – the land of foggy coastlines, enchanting redwoods, kitschy family lodges, cozy log cabins and breathtaking scenic drives. It’s a place where you can choose your own adventure, from redwood hikes to seaside strolls and so much more.

Important side note: Big Sur is not a single town or national park, but rather an unincorporated area spanning 70 miles along the central California coastline. Within this region are multiple state parks, natural preserves, beaches, and hiking trails, all linked by the iconic Highway 1.

Best Hiking in Big Sur

And while the scenery and activities are amazing , my favorite memory from Big Sur is glamping in a hand-woven twig hut at Treebones Resort . I’ve stayed in some pretty unique accommodations  around the globe, but the twig hut definitely tops the list. That property is pure magic!

2. Yosemite

Distance from san jose: 3.5 hours.

What to Know Before You Visit Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is situated in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, and is famed for its incredible cliffs, deep valleys, waterfalls, rivers, and ancient sequoia groves. During my own visit to Yosemite, the word that kept coming to mind was “majestic.”

The mountains, the trees, the waterfalls, the rivers—they’re all so powerful, grand, and wild within the park national boundaries. It’s just a larger than life kind of place!

The First Timer's Guide to Yosemite

We visited Yosemite during early summer, when the landscapes were lush and the waterfalls were roaring. But I’m itching to return in the winter months; I can only imagine how breathtaking and peaceful the scenery is when its blanketed in a thick layer of fluffy white snow. Add in a cozy lodge and a cup of spiked hot chocolate, and I’m all set!

Distance from San Jose: 45 minutes

Temescal Alley Itinerary Oakland

One of the destinations I was most eager to visit after moving to San Jose was Oakland , the “other” city by the bay (with the original City By the Bay being San Francisco, of course).

Oakland is a true multicultural melting pot, and has developed a reputation for its trendy neighborhoods, colorful street murals, and bustling waterfront district. The hip and historic Temescal neighborhood swept me off my feet with its plentiful boutiques, funky dive bars, beer gardens, art galleries and cafes.

Temescal Alley Itinerary Oakland

And don’t even get me started on the food – Oakland has it all, from southern style mac-n-cheese ( promise me you’ll try the buffalo mac at Homeroom if you ever visit Oakland) to authentic Ethiopian, Burmese, Korean and other global cuisines.

4. santa cruz.

Santa Cruz CA

A quick trip over the hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and you’ll feel like you’re a world away from Silicon Valley. For me, Santa Cruz almost feels more like SoCal than NorCal; the kitschy beach boardwalk, long stretches of shoreline, and laidback surfer vibes probably play a role in that.

My perfect day in Santa Cruz? Strolling down the beach with a coffee and a pastry, window shopping and eating my way through downtown, cheap thrills on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and sunset at Natural Bridges State Beach.

Santa Cruz CA

Honestly, the entire stretch of coastline between San Fransisco and Santa Cruz makes for a great weekend getaway. Pescadero and Half Moon Bay are two of my favorite charming little towns north of Santa Cruz.

Distance from San Jose: 2 hours

Dutcher Crossing Vineyard Sonoma Dog Friendly

Ah, Sonoma . You will forever be one of my favorite weekend getaways from San Jose! No matter how many times I visit, I discover more charming towns, more sprawling vineyards, more excellent wines, and more reasons to return to this iconic region of California.

Don’t be fooled – there is a town called Sonoma, but most often when people talk about visiting “Sonoma” they’re referring to the entire county…which is quite large! You could drive for an hour and still be in Sonoma County, and there are plenty of charming towns to choose as your base.

Christopher Creek Winery

Healdsburg is my favorite town in Sonoma, with Sebastopol coming in as a close second. Not only is this region of California ridiculously beautiful, it also produces some truly world-class wines, and is more laid back (read: less pretentious) than neighboring Napa.

Wine Tasting in Calistoga CA

…that said, I’ll never pass up an opportunity to visit Napa Valley. My favorite towns (so far) are Calistoga and Napa , though I’ve heard great things about St. Helena too.

Some of Napa’s wineries truly look like they were plucked out of the Tuscan countryside; they’re incredibly regal and luxurious. Others are a bit more understated, but either way you can always be sure that the wine will be amazing .

Napa Private Wine Tasting

Accommodations in Napa can be quite pricey, so I usually opt for Airbnbs or budget chain hotels. With any luck, you’ll be tipsy enough that it won’t matter where you’re sleeping anyways!

7. San Luis Obispo

Distance from san jose: 3 hours.

How to Spend One Weekend in San Luis Obispo

For wine enthusiasts, San Luis Obispo  is an excellent off-the-beaten-path alternative to Napa and Sonoma. San Luis Obispo County is actually the third largest wine region in all of California, but it’s much less popular among tourists than its northern counterparts.

The Edna Valley area is absolutely gorgeous, and is home to a number of highly-rated wineries in very close proximity to one another. It’s known primarily for its Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs – two personal favorites of mine.

How to Spend One Weekend in San Luis Obispo

Downtown San Luis Obispo is also cute as can be, with its plentiful hip cafes, charming brunch spots, lively bars, and quirky shops. If you’re able to visit on a Thursday, you can’t miss the iconic Thursday Night Farmer’s Market. It felt more like a festival or street party than a farmer’s market, really!

Adventure seekers can outdoor lovers can enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking and SUPing in the hills and coastal areas surrounding San Luis Obispo.

8. Carmel-by-the-Sea

Distance from san jose: 1.5 hours.

Carmel by the Sea Weekend Getaway

Carmel-by-the-Sea . The name alone sounds like something out of a fairytale…and after seeing the town myself, I can safely say that the name is a perfect fit. This ritzy little village is known for its old world charm, scenic and walkable downtown, and dramatic coastal views.

Quaint cottages line the streets of Carmel’s one-square mile downtown area, along with boutiques and wine tasting rooms. You won’t find any street numbers here; instead, businesses and residents name their homes (i.e. “Sea Urchin”) or use cross-streets or descriptive details to provide directions.

Carmel by the Sea Weekend Getaway

Carmel is also the perfect jumping off point for exploring the famous 17-Mile Drive. This scenic road winds down the Pacific coastline past gorgeous vistas, world-famous golf courses and luxurious homes. You can also combine a trip to Carmel with a visit to nearby Monterey.

9. Santa Cruz Mountains

Distance from san jose: 30 minutes.

Savannah Chanelle Vineyards

True, the Santa Cruz Mountains are close enough to San Jose to be a day trip destination rather than a weekend getaway. But spending a night or two in this forested region is the perfect way to escape the madness of the city and rekindle your connection with nature.

There are a surprising number of charming Airbnbs in the Santa Cruz Mountains, most of which are cozy wood cabins surrounded by redwood trees and trickling streams. But we opted for something a bit more whimsical: glamping in a treehouse …on a working vineyard, no less!

Glamping Vineyard Treehouse California

The Santa Cruz Mountains are a hub for under-the-radar wineries and scenic hiking trails, so you can tailor this trip to your perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. How lucky are we to have such a stunning weekend getaway so close to where we live?

10. Lake Tahoe

Distance from san jose: 4 hours.

Lake Tahoe | Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose

Lake Tahoe is one of those rare destinations that truly shines in any season. During the summer, you can booze cruise around the lake and cool off in the chilly, perfectly turquoise water. The hiking is excellent in almost any month of the year, and can be especially nice when the autumn leaves come out to play.

Winter is perhaps the most popular time for visit Lake Tahoe, when visitors flock to iconic ski resorts like Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood and Squaw Valley.

Lake Tahoe | Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose

Whether you prefer summer sports like swimming, kayaking, hiking and SUPing, or would rather cozy up in a log cabin and spend your afternoons hitting the slopes, Tahoe is easily one of the best weekend getaways from San Jose.
