Want an inner look at Toyota North America’s past, present and future? The five experience centers at Toyota vehicle plants across North America give visitors just that. Through visual and hands-on displays, visitors get a chance to better understand advanced manufacturing.

And they’re now all open to the public!

Toyota Mississippi

Opening date: June 7, 2022

Location: Blue Springs, Mississippi

What’s special about the Toyota Mississippi Experience Center?

Toyota Mississippi’s 15,000-square-foot Experience Center was designed and built with a collaborative learning/training environment in mind.

One cool feature? An interactive light display that’s projected onto a specially painted matte gray Corolla (above). Other exhibits allow guests to try their hands at actual dexterity exercises used in Toyota training processes. And the center’s patio overlooks the marshalling yard, where Corollas are parked, sorted and loaded every day before the vehicles are transported to their new homes.

The building is in the process of becoming LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, the most widely used green building rating system in the world, which will make it the first building in Mississippi to have that distinction. The Mississippi site is also the only North America Manufacturing Center to have two indicator species, the northern bobwhite quail and wood duck, which are often visible from the Experience Center grounds and are a component of the education provided at the center. Partnering with the Wildlife Habitat Council, the indicator species help measure the health of an ecosystem.

The Toyota Mississippi Experience Center is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday.

Toyota Indiana

Opening date: Originally opened in 2009; reopened on Sept. 26, 2022

Location: Princeton, Indiana

What’s special about the Toyota Indiana Experience Center?

The Floating Tundra display (above) is a hit with Toyota Indiana visitors and is the No. 1 location for selfies at the center. Putting the artwork together was an experience. The parts were delivered on large sheets of plywood, along with 323 photographs. Using the pictures as a guide, an in-house, six-person team worked for six months to reassemble and suspend the display. It’s held in place with stainless steel aircraft cable. The exhibition showcases the relationship of parts coming together to make the vehicle. This idea of coalescing is an artistic rendition of assembly, which is a perfect fit for a leader in advanced manufacturing.

The Experience Center also has a Type G Automatic Loom on display (above). The fully functional loom was invented by Toyota’s founder, Sakichi Toyoda, and is one of only two located outside Japan; the other is on display at Britain’s Science Museum. At the time of its creation, it was the world’s most sophisticated and economical loom. Toyoda used money from selling the Type G patent as an investment for his son Kiichiro to begin a new division of the company – the automotive division.

The Toyota Indiana Experience Center is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday.

Toyota Texas

What’s special about this Experience Center?

Toyota Texas is the only place in the world where Tundras are built. And a new vehicle rolls off the line about every 60 seconds.

What makes its Experience Center special? There are informative hands-on exhibits on the fundamentals of building the Sequoia and Tundra vehicles. One of the more popular exhibits allows visitors to test a virtual paint sprayer (above). The display is a paint booth simulation where guests can experience what it’s like to paint a Tundra or Sequoia through VR technology.

The Toyota Texas Experience Center is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday.

Toyota Kentucky

Opening date: Started tours in 1990; the first visitor center opened in 1994; reopened in Nov. 2022.

Another exhibit allows visitors to see a historic Camry (above) — it’s the first vehicle assembled by a wholly-owned Toyota plant in North America.

12. Nissan North America – Smyrna, Tennessee

Limited tours of this vehicle assembly plant near Nashville are offered–only Tuesdays and Thursdays–but a motorized, narrated ride through the assembly of these renowned Nissan vehicles is worth the waiting list. You’ll get to see everything from the Pathfinder to the Altima and the Leaf rolling off the production line. More information.

11. BMW U.S. Factory – Spartanburg, South Carolina

Those interested in getting an inside perspective on the “Ultimate Driving Machine” will love touring the only American BMW factory, which is near Charlotte, NC. For a $10 fee, visitors will get to see the modern engineering marvels of the German brand at work within the production plant. 10. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama – Montgomery, Alabama

If you want to watch the construction of a car you probably own, check out this factory within the historic Montgomery city limits. After watching a prep video and donning your headsets, you’ll be taken on a guided tram tour of the assembly of the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra . 9. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky – Georgetown, Kentucky

Welcome to Toyota’s assembly plant in Georgetown, Kentucky!

In the heart of the bluegrass region, not far from Lexington, is a massive Toyota manufacturing plant that has given tours to hundreds of thousands of people since 1990. Visitors can take a free guided tram tour through the inside of the facility while listening to friendly guides over headphones explain the work being done. 8. Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) – Lafayette, Indiana

If you’re headed to Chicago sometime, swing by the home of North American Subaru production that’s southeast of the Windy City. A free, mile-long walk on an elevated catwalk through the facility offers a unique perspective on production operations, but skirts are highly discouraged for that reason! You’ll be accompanied by a knowledgeable Subaru tour director on your walk. More information .

7. Ford Rouge Factory – Dearborn, Michigan

The assembly area is only one portion of this thorough five-part, self-guided tour. Apart from seeing the new aluminum F-150 produced in the assembly floor, learn more about the plant’s innovations at the Legacy Theater, Manufacturing Innovation Theater, and Legacy Gallery. Tickets are a bit pricey but it’s one of the few facilities open for weekend tours. More information .

6. Mercedes-Benz US International – Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Get a close-up look at the most luxurious auto brand around by seeing the Visitor Center Museum and taking a guided tour along the assembly floor, which produces such greats as the M-Class . Despite the tour costing a small fee, the experience is highly memorable–and the two mile walk will give you a workout too! More information .

5. Bowling Green Corvette Plant – Bowling Green, Kentucky

Welcome to the home of the Chevy Corvette!

This place halfway between Louisville and Nashville received a lot of attention after a sinkhole appeared in its adjacent National Corvette Museum. Now that it’s being repaired, visitors are flocking to see the Chevy building and tour the assembly plant. For a small fee, you can take an hour-long guided walking tour of the Corvette sports car’s actual construction, from the initial steel structure to the final drive off the line. More information .

4. Honda Heritage – Marysville, Ohio

The Honda Heritage Center in Marysville, Ohio

Although you can’t actually tour the factory here near Columbus which has been producing vehicles for over 50 years, the facility recently opened up a stellar museum on its grounds . You’ll learn about the role the factory has played in the history of the Honda, as well as see fascinating models on display. 3. General Motors Fairfax Assembly Plant – Kansas City, Kansas

This GM assembly and stamping facility in the heart of barbecue city offers free walking tours on certain days. If you follow the strict set of safety guidelines, you’ll get to see the process of metal being molded into body panels and attached to vehicles like the Buick LaCrosse and the Chevrolet Malibu . The legacy of Carroll Shelby lives on! This facility has been modifying and selling Ford vehicles for 50 years. If you still have time after seeing the numerous cars on display on the showroom floor, you can get a free tour of the garage (donations accepted). More information .

Multiple Harley Davidson plants offer tours in the US. A free, hour-long walking tour of the manufacturing plant in York, PA is offered, but most visitors prefer the Steel Toe Tour which–for a decent price–gets you entrance to special areas, a commemorative pin, a group photo, a safety vest, and $5 toward the gift shop. A Kids Corner makes this facility suitable for your whole family.

In the heart of Harley history, Menomonee Falls, WI has the northwest plant. You’ll love the interactive museum in downtown Milwaukee and the grand tour of the production facility. Staying overnight? Consider the unique Iron Horse Hotel.

After a prolonged period of being stuck at home, some families are looking to travel again. And while the COVID-19 pandemic means that precautions still have to be taken, and not every destination is up and running at 100% capacity, there's still plenty of unique experiences out there that are once again open to the public.

When you get to your family vacation destination , what do you do? If you're traveling with kids , in addition to the usual sightseeing attractions, depending on your destination, you might want to look and see if there is a factory tour near you. These behind-the-scene looks show kids how their favorite objects are made; they may even get a lesson in industrial design, engineering and manufacturing. Plus, if you tour a creamery, ice-cream factory or sweet shop, you might get a tasty sample at the end!

The following factory tours and appropriate for kids, are well-reviewed by families and are currently open to visitors (or will be opening soon). But you might want to book ahead — some require timed tickets or reservations before you visit. But when you're done, you'll all know a little bit more about how the world around you is made.

Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory (Louisville, Kentucky)

Swing by to see how baseball bats are made — this company has been churning them out since 1884. Your family can walk through the factory production line and watch the wood chips fly! Everyone can try out bats from iconic players, like Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter. With plenty of photo ops (including your crew inside a giant baseball mitt) and a free mini bat souvenir for every guest, this tour will be a home run. From your perch above the production line, you’ll witness all the steps — slurry, steam bath, glossy application — it takes to create the gourmet jellybeans that have been a thing since the late 1800s. Your crew will be star-struck hanging out at a working movie studio. During the hour-long guided portion, you’ll see backlots, movie sets and maybe even spy someone famous. Then you’ll have two more hours to explore on your own — plenty of time to snap a pic of your family in front of the fountain from Friends . Open daily: $69 for adults, $59 for ages 5 – 10

The Great Utz Chip Trip Tour (Hanover, Pennsylvania)

Kids will discover how potatoes get turned into chips at this famous maker’s plant near the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. They can watch factory workers from an observation gallery; closed-circuit TV monitors provide close-ups. Everyone receives a free sample of chips at the end. Open Monday – Thursday, free

Ben & Jerry’s Factory Experience (Waterbury, Vermont)

With a tentative re-opening planned for the end of June 2022, this beloved attraction wets appetites with a short movie about how Ben & Jerry got their start. From there, it’s off to the mezzanine where you’ll watch how the ice cream is made. Samples of ice cream (sometimes a flavor that’s exclusive to the factory) is the proverbial cherry on top. The Crayola Experience (Easton, Pennsylvania)

There are many activities to take part in at The Crayola experience, including a live show where a "crayonologist" demonstrates how crayons are made. The 65,000-square-foot attraction also includes a toddler and a big-kid playground, interactive games and a studio for art projects, among manny other stations — they recommend blocking out three or four hours for a visit. Open daily. Admission is $25 if you buy tickets in advance; a timed ticket is required for all visitors ages 3 and up. The White House (Washington, DC)

Though not a factory in the traditional sense, White House tours are back, and you can meander around the famous Blue Room, Red Room, State dining room and — best of all — the Rose Garden. But you can’t wait until the last minute to book. Twenty-one to 90 days before you’d like to visit, you need to request one of the free tours by contacting your congress member’s office. Active Assembly Information

Ford Rouge Factory Tour is an experience housed within Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Truck Plant in partnership with The Henry Ford and the United Auto Workers union.

The Dearborn Truck Plant is a real working factory. As a result, there are many factors that can cause inconsistent active assembly hours. This includes vehicle demand, supply shortages, factory floor renovations and construction, and staffing considerations. The Dearborn Truck Plant does not build vehicles during daily breaks, shift changes, holidays and weekends.

Please note that The Henry Ford cannot control Ford Motor Company’s production schedule and cannot guarantee that guests will see the assembly line in full operation during their visit. The Henry Ford is also not able to refund tickets in the event that vehicles are not being actively assembled.

Regardless of whether vehicles are being actively assembled, guests will be able to view the Dearborn Truck Plant’s final assembly area via a fully accessible suspended walkway at all times. The final assembly area is only one part of the Ford Rouge Factory Tour’s five-part experience. All other parts of the tour remain unaffected.

The Dearborn Truck Plant will not be in active assembly during these dates in 2024 and 2025, following the plant’s holiday and maintenance schedule. The dates include but aren’t limited to:

Texas has factories to visit and tour. Below, first are the active, working factories. The next section has historical operations which often have demonstrations or renactments. These incluse both large and small operations, from several person chocolate factories and cheesemakers to large manufacturers making paper towels, wood products, beverage cans and bottles, are open to the public with real tours, exhibitions and fun education.

In some cases, such as a manufacturing process that is no longer in use, the only way to see it and learn about it is a museum or living history center. So, we also provide information about engineering facilities and museums, dinosaur digs, even government facilities, like NASA, astronomy oberservatories and more that are open to the public on certain days and times. Tesla to open its new car factory in Austin, Texas, with 'Cyber Rodeo' party

• Tesla is kicking off production at its new car factory in Texas with an event called "Cyber Rodeo." 
• The electric-car maker moved its headquarters to Austin, Texas, last year. 
• In March, Tesla opened its first European plant just outside of Berlin.

Tesla will mark the opening of its new car factory in Austin, Texas, with an event called "Cyber Rodeo" on Thursday. 

The plant, which Tesla calls Gigafactory Texas, should help the automaker keep pace with a fierce consumer appetite for its vehicles. In 2021, Tesla shipped some 936,000 vehicles worldwide from its factories in California and Shanghai, and new plants in Texas and Germany are expected to greatly increase the carmaker's production capacity.

Gigafactory Texas will produce Tesla's Model Y compact SUV with a new battery pack that acts as a structural component. Tesla also intends to manufacture its long-awaited Cybertruck pickup at the new Texas location, but that model is delayed at least until 2023 and Tesla says it is still in development. 

In October, Tesla announced it was moving its corporate headquarters from Silicon Valley to Austin. 

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Cyber Rodeo might be "literally the biggest party on Earth." In March, officials in Travis County approved a gathering of up to 15,000 people, according to the Austin American-Statesman . 

The invite-only party will start at 4 pm local time, with Musk planning to address the crowd at 9 pm, he said. Photos and videos Musk shared online show the sprawling building decorated with colorful light displays and car parts. 

At a similar event kicking off production at Tesla's factory outside of Berlin last month, customers took delivery of the first Model Y SUVs built in Europe.
