Carnival Drink Package Explained

Package Options

When it comes to drink packages on Carnival Cruise Line, you have two main options to choose from: the CHEERS! package and the Bottomless Bubbles package.

The CHEERS! package offers a wide selection of drinks, including alcoholic drinks, while the Bottomless Bubbles package caters to those who prefer unlimited soda and juice.

Choosing the right package for your trip can depend on your personal preferences and planned activities during the cruise.

It’s important to consider the pricing of each package before making a decision. All drink packages are priced per person, per day, and must be purchased for the entire length of the cruise.

The CHEERS! package costs $59.95 USD per person, per day when you purchase it prior to your cruise through Carnival’s website.

However, it’s worth noting that if you decide to purchase the package onboard, the price increases to $64.95 USD per person, per day . In both cases, an 18% service charge is added to these prices.

Please note that the cost of the Bottomless Bubbles package varies depending on the sailing, so be sure to check the specific pricing for your selected cruise itinerary.

Your chosen package impacts which drinks you’ll have access to during your cruise. With the CHEERS! package , you can enjoy:

  • Alcoholic drinks such as beers, wines, and spirits priced up to $20 USD per serving
  • Non-alcoholic beverages, including a variety of soft drinks, juices, and specialty coffees

On the other hand, the Bottomless Bubbles package provides you with:

  • Unlimited soda and juice from the ship’s various bars and lounges

This makes it a suitable choice for those who do not consume alcohol or prefer a more budget-friendly option.

Consider your preferences and the types of beverages you want to indulge in during your cruise when deciding on the perfect drink package to enhance your Carnival experience.

Cost Savings

One of the main advantages of purchasing a Carnival drink package is the potential for savings.

With the popular CHEERS! package, you’ll pay a flat rate of $59.95 USD per person, per day plus an 18% service charge if you purchase it online before your cruise begins, or $64.95 USD per person, per day plus an 18% service charge if you buy it onboard.

This package includes a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and if you’re someone who enjoys multiple drinks throughout the day, the overall costs can add up quite quickly.

And honestly, on vacation, those drinks ad dup quick!

By opting for the CHEERS! package, you can better manage your budget and won’t have to worry about any surprise expenses at the end of your cruise.

A cost-effective alternative is the Bottomless Bubbles package, which offers unlimited soda and juice.

This option can save you even more money, especially if you plan on enjoying more non-alcoholic beverages.

Convenience

In addition to the cost savings, the convenience factor of the Carnival drink package cannot be underestimated.

As a cruise is supposed to be a stress-free vacation, having a prepaid drink package means you won’t have to worry about monitoring your beverage expenses each day.

Instead, relax and enjoy the ship’s amenities, as well as the wide range of drinks available with your chosen package.

Plus I’m the type that if I paid $18 for a drink, I’ll drink it even if I don’t like it. But with the package, if I hate a drink, that’s fine. I’ll just order another one.

On top of this, the CHEERS! and Bottomless Bubbles packages cover most types of beverages, from cocktails, beer, and wine to soda, juice, and specialty coffees.

You won’t have to spend time calculating how much each drink will cost you — instead, focus on which delicious concoction you’d like to try next.

Plus, with a prepaid package, you can freely experiment and sample new drinks without worrying about their price.

The convenience that the Carnival drink package offers allows you to fully immerse yourself in the onboard experience.

How to Purchase a Drink Package

Bartender making drinks

Online Pre-Booking

To purchase a drink package for your Carnival cruise, you can start by pre-booking online. By doing this, you’ll save 10% off the onboard prices.

The cut-off for pre-purchase is 11:59 PM the day before embarkation. Access the Carnival website, log into your account, select your cruise, and choose the drink package that is right for you.

Here are some main drink package options:

  • Soda Package : Starting at $6.95 per child per day and $9.50 per adult per day
  • CHEERS! Package : Starting at $59.95 per person per day

Once you’ve made your selection, add it to your cart and check out.

Onboard Purchasing

If you decide not to pre-book your Carnival drink package online or missed the deadline, don’t worry, you can still purchase drink packages once you’re onboard the ship.

Keep in mind that the price will be slightly higher than pre-booking online.

To purchase a drink package onboard, simply head over to one of the ship’s bars or guest services desk.

Ask the staff for the drink package options available on your cruise.

Some popular drink prices you might find onboard include:

  • Beer : $6.00 – $7.95
  • Wine by the glass : $8.00 – $14.00
  • Mixed Drinks : $6.95 – $20.00
  • Specialty Cocktails : $8.95 – $12.95
  • Soft Drinks : $2.50
  • Specialty Drinks : $2.00 – $4.95

Your Carnival drink package will be activated upon purchase, and you can start enjoying your beverages during your cruise.

Remember to stay within your drink package limit to avoid additional charges.

Restrictions and Limitations

Bartender making drinks

Alcohol Limit

When it comes to the Carnival CHEERS! drink package, you should be aware of the alcohol limit. This is important for ensuring you have a good time while staying responsible.

The program allows a maximum of 15 alcoholic drinks per day.

Keep in mind, this limit resets each day at 6 a.m., providing you with a fresh set of 15 drinks for the following day.

In order to ensure a smooth experience, it’s a good idea to keep track of your daily consumption.

Remember, if you hit the 15-drink limit, additional drinks will incur extra costs at their regular menu prices.

Non-Transferability

Another important aspect to consider with the Carnival CHEERS! package is its non-transferability.

This means that your drink package is exclusively for your personal use and cannot be shared with others.

Each adult assigned to the same stateroom must purchase the package if one person chooses to take advantage of the program.

To ensure that everyone in your party has access to beverages throughout the cruise, make sure each person has their own drink package. Attempting to share your CHEERS! package could result in the cancellation of your program without a refund.

In summary, while enjoying the Carnival CHEERS! drink package, it’s essential to keep in mind the 15-drink daily limit and the non-transferability of the package.

By understanding these restrictions and limitations, you can have an enjoyable cruise experience and make the most out of your drink package without any unforeseen issues.

Tips for Maximizing Your Drink Package

Trying new drinks.

To make the most of your Carnival drink package, consider trying new drinks that you haven’t experienced before.

Since you’ve already paid for the package, this is a great opportunity to explore different beverages without worrying about the cost.

Experiment with various cocktails, wines, and beers to find your favorites. You might even discover a new go-to drink for future vacations!

Keep in mind that the CHEERS! package offers a wide selection of beverages, from refreshing cocktails to sophisticated wines.

Don’t hesitate to ask the bartenders for recommendations, as they usually have insider knowledge on intriguing concoctions and popular choices among guests.

Additionally, you can always inquire about the daily special, which often showcases unique and delicious options.

Sharing with Friends

While sharing your drink package benefits with friends is not officially allowed, you can still engage in a social drinking experience with your companions.

For instance, if your friends are interested in trying the same drink as you, order one for yourself and allow them to sample it.

This way, you can all enjoy the experience and flavors together.

Another way to make the most of your drink package with friends is by organizing a mini-tasting event in your cabin or by the pool.

Each person can order their drink of choice, and then you can pass them around, allowing everyone to taste and discuss the different options.

This not only enhances the fun and camaraderie but also broadens everyone’s palate.

When deciding on a Carnival drink package, remember to weigh its cost against buying drinks a la carte. If you plan to consume multiple beverages daily, the package can be an economical choice.

By purchasing your beverage package pre-cruise, you can also save 10% off the onboard prices.

What’s Included On A Carnival Cruise?

Carnival cruises are not all-inclusive . Your fare covers all your onboard accommodations, including taxes, port charges, and gratuities. You’ll also have access to meals in the dining room or buffet restaurants.

Depending on your stateroom category and package, you may receive additional perks like priority boarding, complimentary wifi, and access to priority restaurants and lounges.

Drinks are not included unless you purchase a drink package making your cruise more ‘all-inclusive.’

Is Gratuity Included In The Price?

There is an additional 18% added to all the drink packages for gratuities .

So although the CHEERS! package is $59.95, plus the gratuities, it comes out to about $70.75 per person, per day.

The reason behind this additional charge is to appropriately compensate the hardworking bartenders and other crew members who provide exceptional service during your cruise..

Can One Person Get A Drink Package On Carnival?

If you choose to purchase the drink package, all other members of your cabin who are 21+ years old will also be required to purchase the package.

This ensures a fair system and prevents guests from sharing drinks with those who have not paid for the package.

What Drinks Are Included In The Carnival Drink Packages?

With the CHEERS! Beverage Program, you’ll have access to a vast selection of drinks that cater to all your preferences.

The package covers various cocktails and spirits, giving you the chance to explore new flavors while cruising. If you’re more of a beer lover, you can look forward to a range of beers by the glass, starting at 16-ounces.

Don’t worry, wine enthusiasts—we haven’t forgotten about you.

Your Carnival drink package allows you to choose from a diverse selection of wines by the glass, starting at $9.50.

If you’re looking for something sweet and refreshing, the drink package has you covered with zero-proof frozen cocktails .

You can also enjoy energy drinks, milkshakes, smoothies, and juices.

For coffee and tea lovers, the package includes specialty coffees and non-specialty coffee and tea options as well.

Comforting options like hot chocolate are also part of the package.

Apart from these exciting drink choices, the package includes staple beverages such as non-bottled water, lemonade, and iced tea .

The CHEERS! Package excludes:

  • Beverages promoted and sold in souvenir glasses
  • Bottles of liquor
  • Beverages offered at gangway
  • Beverages offered through room service, mini bars and/or in-stateroom beverage programs
  • Sharing cocktails, floaters, pitchers, tubes and buckets
  • Beverages offered through enomatic wine machines
  • All other beverage-related programs including merchandise, cigars and cigarettes

The Bottomless Bubbles, on the other hand, includes all non-alcoholic soft drinks and juices .

Does The Drink Package Work On Carnival’s Private Islands Or In Ports?

Unfortunately, the drink packages are not included on the private islands or ports. They can only used for beverages on the ship.

This means that even though Carnival has private islands for their guests, the drink package cannot be used there.

It’s important to note that this policy applies to all ports of call and private islands, so it’s a good idea to plan accordingly if you’re expecting to spend a significant amount of time off the ship.

How Will The Bartender Know I Have Purchased The CHEERS! Package?

When you purchase the CHEERS! package, it will automatically be linked to your Sail & Sign card.

This card is your key to everything while aboard the ship, including your cabin door and making purchases.

Each time you order a drink at the bar, simply hand your Sail & Sign card to the bartender.

They will swipe or scan your card to confirm that you have the CHEERS! package.

As a visual indicator, after your first drink purchase using the CHEERS! package, a sticker will be placed on your Sail & Sign card.

This sticker serves as a quick reference for bartenders and servers to confirm your participation in the program.

So even if a new bartender is serving you, they will easily recognize the sticker as proof of your beverage package.

It is important to always carry your Sail & Sign card while on the ship. Not only will you need it to access your drinks through the CHEERS! package, but it is also required for various other onboard activities and purchases.

Furthermore, it’s a good idea to keep track of your daily drink consumption and make sure you are adhering to the program’s limitations.

With the CHEERS! package, you can enjoy up to 15 alcoholic beverages per day, as well as unlimited non-alcoholic drinks.

How to Buy A Drink Package For Your Carnival Cruise

To purchase the CHEERS! drink package, you should start by visiting Carnival Cruise Line’s official website.

You can find the available drink packages under the “Food and Beverages” section.

Make sure you’re already booked on a cruise, as you’ll need to log in to your account to access the beverage package options.

Once you’ve logged in, you’ll see the CHEERS! package, which typically has a starting price of $51.95 per person per day, plus an additional 18% for gratuities .

Keep in mind that the package must be purchased for the entire voyage, at a rate of $59.95 USD per person, per day (plus 18% service charge) if done via Carnival’s website, or $64.95 USD per person, per day (plus 18% service charge) if purchased onboard.

When you’ve selected the CHEERS! package, simply add it to your cart.

As you proceed to checkout, you’ll have the chance to review the details of your package. Make sure to double-check the number of days and the prices before finalizing payment.

Remember, it’s best to buy this drink package in advance to save up to 10%. If not, you can do so as soon as you board the ship to access all the refreshing beverages throughout your entire cruise.

Are Carnival Drink Packages Worth It?

Honestly, whether the drink pasckage is worth it depends and varies from passenger-to-passenger. You have to take into account how much you plan to drink while onboard.

Plus, with the drink package you’re paying for every day of your cruise and there are some days you may be on land exploring, thus not using your drink package much.

Firstly, the Carnival CHEERS! drink package offers an easy way to enjoy a variety of beverages on the ship.

It’s best to take a look at the Carnival drink menus and calculate how much you think you’ll spend while onboard, then compare it to the drink package.

For example, the CHEERS! package for a 7-day cruise would cost about $495 per person, including gratuities.

How Many Drinks Can I Buy At One Time?

The CHEERS! package only allows you to order one drink at a time. There is also a 5-minute waiting period between ordering drinks.

It’s designed to provide a simple, hassle-free way for you to enjoy a wide range of beverages without having to worry about constantly pulling out your wallet.

With this package, you can explore an impressive variety of drinks, including cocktails, frozen concoctions, wines by the glass, and non-alcoholic beverages.

An additional perk of the package is that you’ll have access to discounts on purchases of wines and champagnes by the bottle.

While the full bottles aren’t included in the CHEERS! package, it’s a nice option to have if you want to elevate your dining experience or celebrate a special occasion.

Can You Buy A Carnival Drink Package With Onboard Credit?

Yes, you can use your onboard credit (OBC) to purchase any of the Carnival drink packages.

This is a convenient option that allows you to enjoy a variety of beverages during your cruise without worrying about the costs adding up. It’s also the best way to use your onboard credit .

To purchase this package, you’ll need to have sufficient onboard credit in your “Sail & Sign” account.

The cost of the package depends on when you buy it – if you purchase it before your cruise through Carnival’s website, it’s $59.95 USD per person, per day plus an 18% service charge.

If you wait until you’re on board, the price increases to $64.95 USD per person, per day, with the same 18% service charge.

Keep in mind that the drink package must be purchased for the entire duration of your voyage, and there are some restrictions on what is included.

Can I Order A “Double”?

While the package doesn’t explicitly mention doubles, most bartenders on board are quite accommodating and will likely serve you a double upon request.

Keep in mind, though, that there might be an additional charge for the extra shot, as the package typically covers single servings of alcoholic beverages up to a certain value.

Be sure to ask your bartender about any extra charges for doubles before placing your order to avoid any unexpected surprises on your final bill.

Plus, the Cheers! beverage package has a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per 24-hour period for each guest. When you order a double, it could potentially count as two drinks toward your daily limit.

To pace yourself and fully enjoy your cruise experience, make sure you’re aware of your drink count and spacing out your alcoholic beverages throughout the day.

In addition to requesting doubles, you can also explore the wide range of unique cocktails available at various bars on board.

This is an excellent way to discover new flavors and have a memorable and enjoyable cruise experience.

Carnival Cruise Line 2024 Drink Menus and Pricing

Last Updated on April 17, 2024

In the past, embarking on a cruise meant encountering the same routine selection of beverages across all venues. Your options typically included classics like daiquiris, pina coladas, and, if the menu dared to be bold, perhaps a mojito. Today, the drink landscape has undergone a significant transformation. Cruise ship bars now boast a diverse array of choices, featuring craft beers, premium spirits, and meticulously concocted cocktails. It’s an entirely new experience.

Carnival Cruise Line, in particular, has taken this evolution to heart, revolutionizing its drink offerings with a tailored menu for almost every bar on their ships. This accomplishment is noteworthy, especially when considering that a single ship can host between 10 and 15 bars.

Carnival will be increasing drink menu prices in the first part of 2024. The new menus are already in place on the Carnival Jubilee and we expect other ships to follow in January and February.

See a new menu on your ship? Email it to us so we can share with everyone, [email protected]

Below you’ll find the bar menus found on the Carnival Cruise Line’s ships. Carnival has a pretty robust beverage program and usually has different drinks available at nearly every bar on a ship, so you’ll see a ton of drink options below. For drinks offered at multiple venues, the prices are consistent (i.e., a Coors Light and the Atrium Bar will cost the same as a Coors Light at the Pool Bar). When looking at the prices, remember to consider gratuities. Carnival automatically adds an 18% gratuity added to all beverage purchases.

Carnival Cruise Line Raises Drink Gratuities

Picture of Richard Simms

Richard Simms

  • November 30, 2018

If you’re sailing on Carnival Cruise Line and decide to order a drink, you will now pay an 18 percent gratuity on alcohol and non-alcoholic drink services – even those who purchase the CHEERS! beverage package. The company quietly boosted the gratuity by three percent overnight on Thursday. Previously, the drink gratuity price was 15 percent.

How Much You’ll Now Pay

carnival cruise cheers package

A change to Carnival’s gratuity section on their website now states, “For beverage purchases, an automatic 18% gratuity will be added to the bill.” In the case of individual purchases, it will simply be added to the price charged to your Sail & Sign account. When purchasing a beverage package, the gratuity will automatically be factored into the overall price.

For comparison’s sake, this is in line with the gratuity charged by Royal Caribbean, and slightly less than that of Norwegian (which adds an automatic 20 percent gratuity).

Earlier this year, a change was made to the CHEERS! program involving the cap on the price of covered drinks. While it had previously covered anything up to $50, the cap is now $20 per-drink, with a 25 percent discount (off the menu price) for “any spirit or wine by the glass above $20.” The package covers up to 15 alcoholic beverages per day, as well as a wide selection of other drinks (including milkshakes and a variety of coffees).

The change in the gratuity also applies to the Bottomless Bubbles soda package. While the gratuity for this increases from 15 to 18 percent, the price remains the same at $4.95 per person, per day for children, and $7.50 per person, per day for adults. The Bottomless Bubbles package includes all soda and juices.

Both packages must be purchased for the length of the cruise, and both are non-refundable. Looking to save a little money? Order the packages in advance. You’ll pay slightly more per person, per day if you decide to buy the programs once on board.

Carnival has also raised their daily gratuities and revised their smoking policy , both effective December 1.

Cruise Drink Packages: Your Options by Cruise Line

C ruise drink packages can provide incredible value for people who plan to regularly imbibe on their voyage and want the convenience of an unlimited open bar package – whereas they may not be a good deal for light drinkers. Other options include alcohol-free drink packages, which let cruisers indulge in soft drinks, hot chocolate, specialty coffees and a range of other nonalcoholic beverages.

Whether or not to get the drink package is a question all cruisers face, and there's no perfect answer for everyone. Read on to learn about the drink packages offered by the major cruise lines and what each beverage package includes.

Expert tip: The price of each beverage package will vary from sailing to sailing and may change at any time. Also note that cruise drink packages are almost always nontransferable and nonrefundable, and that everyone in your cabin needs to buy a package. If kids are cruising with adults who purchase an alcoholic drink package, a nonalcoholic package must be purchased for them.

Here are the documents and costs to keep in mind when planning a cruise

carnival cruise drink package gratuity

As I made plans this summer to take a cruise, I worked my way through my pre-travel checklist. I booked my flights, researched ground transportation options and selected a hotel for the night before boarding.

But I had yet to tick one important box: renewing my expired passport .

I had not traveled internationally since the pandemic began and needed a deadline to motivate me, so shortly before my  sailing from the Netherlands to New York , I filled out the application, paid the fees, and did a quick photo shoot at my local Walgreens.

Passports are just one of the documents travelers may need when taking a cruise, which can add to the overall cost of a trip. Here's what travelers should have on hand and what costs they might encounter before and during their trip:

What documents will travelers need to board a cruise?

The U.S. State Department recommends cruise passengers sailing from America have a passport.

U.S. citizens booked on closed-loop cruises – those that start and end at the same U.S. port – can enter the country with a government-issued photo ID and birth certificate instead, but the State Department encourages having a passport "in case of an emergency, such as an unexpected medical air evacuation or the ship docking at an alternate port," according to its website . Cruise lines may also require it.

Denise Jewell, owner of Opulence Travel Agency, also recommends having a passport, even on closed-loop cruises, in case you don't make it back to the ship in time during a stop.

"It'll be much easier to deal with the locals if you have a passport as opposed to a birth certificate," Jewell said.

If travelers need to apply for or renew a passport, "the sooner you get started the better," said Danny Genung, CEO of travel agency Harr Travel. He suggested beginning that process as soon as you book your trip, even if it's a year in advance.

"This is one of the big pain points and stress points of travel if you wait too long," Genung said.

Even travelers who have procrastinated, though, may not be out of luck. I mailed my passport renewal application on Sept. 7 and paid about $208 in fees overall, including expedited service. I received my new passport on Oct. 3, about two weeks before my trip.

What costs will travelers encounter while taking a cruise?

Many costs associated with a cruise are included in the fare travelers pay when they book. "I think one of the things I would point out is, spending money on a cruise ship is a choice," said Genung, noting that he has been on many cruises and spent nothing additional except on gratuities. However, with mainstream cruise lines, there are generally some key expenses to keep in mind (on luxury lines, many of these costs are likely to be included in the fare).

►  Taxes, fees and port expenses : In addition to the fare, travelers must pay taxes, fees and port expenses, said Brigitte Feinberg, a travel adviser and independent affiliate of Avenue Two Travel. Those can vary based on the specifics of your trip.

► Gratuities: On mainstream lines such as Royal Caribbean International, Feinberg said, gratuities are automatically added to travelers' bills on a per person, per day basis.

Those prices can vary. Royal Caribbean  charges $16 per guest each day staying in non-suite staterooms, and $18.50 for those in suites, while Carnival Cruise Line applies a $14.50 daily charge per passenger for non-suite rooms, and $16.50 for guests in suites, according to their websites.

Marvel Day at Sea returns: Disney Cruise Line event is back with more superheroes, villains than ever

Cruise line guide: Traveling with family, or maybe looking for adventure? There's a cruise line for that

Guests can prepay those gratuities, so they "don't have to worry about that bill at the end of the cruise," Feinberg said, or pay them as part of the final bill. Passengers can also adjust the gratuities up or down, though Feinberg does not recommend the latter.

She added that some guests also bring cash to tip crew members directly who "went above and beyond" during the trip.

► Some food and drinks:  While much of the food is included on mainstream lines, some restaurants and items may cost extra.

On my October Holland America Line cruise, I visited specialty restaurants with prices ranging from $19 to $49 per person, plus an 18% gratuity.

Lines such as Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line also include basic drinks like iced tea and regular coffee while charging for others. Genung said, "in a lot of cases there's good value" in pre-purchasing specialty dining or beverage packages.

► Shore excursions:  On mainstream cruise lines, Feinberg said, excursions are not included either. "Yes, the room's only $300 for a week, but by the time you're all said and done you're going to be spending a lot more than that," she said.

She said excursions can run from $50 to hundreds of dollars per person.

Most cruise lines have promotional sales on excursions and other packages before the cruise, Genung said, which can offer "significant savings," particularly for families traveling together.

"I have two little kiddos myself, and it's a lot more expensive to travel than when it was just my wife and I," he said. "So, you know, when you multiply an unexpected cost times four, or five or six, it gets pretty exponential."

► Wi-Fi:  Many cruise lines charge extra for Wi-Fi, but the price may depend on your needs.

Norwegian Cruise Line, for instance, sells both basic and premium options for one, two, and four devices, starting at $25.50 per day if guests purchase online and about $30 per day if they purchase on board, according to its website . The line also sells a 250-minute option.

Genung noted that it is almost always cheaper to purchase the internet prior to boarding than it is after getting on the ship.

► Laundry:  Depending on the length of the sailing, travelers may run out of clean clothes as I did on my October transatlantic cruise.

Like many mainstream lines,Holland America offered laundry services with several options, to choose from. I picked the Laundry By the Bag package, which cost $30 for as many clothes as I could fit in a bag the line placed in my stateroom closet.

There was also an Unlimited Pressing package for $75 and an Unlimited Laundry option for $135, including pressing, both for the duration of the sailing, according to an info sheet in my stateroom.

Feinberg noted that some cruise lines also have laundry rooms where guests can wash and dry their own clothes, such as Carnival, which charges $3.50 for each washer load, and $3.50 per dryer load, according to its website .

Royal Caribbean drink packages: Prices, inclusions and what to know before you buy

Melinda Crow

Royal Caribbean drink packages allow you to drink what you want, when you want without feeling like you are being nickeled and dimed. Isn't that most cruisers' dream? The all-inclusive, extra-fee beverage plans aren't necessarily for everyone, but they offer a nice way to enhance your cruise and take some of the stress out of in-the-moment vacation decisions.

Royal Caribbean ships offer a variety of packages, from a simple Water Package that keeps you and your crew hydrated during your cruise to a comprehensive plan that includes most alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks. Other than the Water Package, which is priced based on the quantity you order, drink packages on Royal Caribbean are priced per person, per day.

The most common questions about Royal Caribbean's drink packages revolve around what each package includes, whether they are worth the price and when is the best time to buy your package. I've tried all of Royal Caribbean's drink packages. I've also cruised without a package. Here's what you need to know to decide if a beverage plan is right for you.

What's included in Royal Caribbean's drink packages?

Royal Caribbean offers a few different drink packages, and the inclusions vary based on your choice. All options include gratuities, and no Royal Caribbean drink package covers room service or minibar drinks. Also, unlimited alcoholic beverage packages may not be available while the ship sails in some locations, so package details may change based on the itinerary.

Water Package

Royal Caribbean's Water Package is available in 12- and 24-packs of 1-liter bottles of Evian water. The bottles will be delivered to your cabin on embarkation day.

carnival cruise drink package gratuity

If you don't want to pay for a Water Package, you can find drinking water at complimentary drink stations in the buffet area and often in other locations on Royal Caribbean ships. Bring your own reusable bottle and fill it from these stations or straight from the faucet in your cabin. The water throughout the ships is not only drinkable but also better than what's available in many cities. You can also purchase bottles of water a la carte.

Why might you consider a Water Package? If you drink bottled water at home, you may prefer the taste. The package also allows you to have plenty of water on hand in your cabin or to take on excursions.

The downside is that 1-liter bottles are not the ideal size for lugging off the ship with you. You must either bring a reusable bottle or purchase single-serving bottles for port days. You can get these at bars or the gangway as you disembark in each port.

Classic Soft Drinks Package

Royal Caribbean's Soft Drinks Package is for the serious soda drinker. On select ships, the package comes with a souvenir Coca-Cola cup with a chip on the bottom to allow the holder to use the Freestyle soda dispensing machines throughout the ship. The "magic" cup gets you all the refills you want 24 hours a day, with your pick of sodas with add-in flavorings. (Orange Coke is my fave.) Coca-Cola Freestyle machines are available on 18 ships in the fleet.

You can also order a glass of soda at any restaurant or bar on board. Some venues only serve fountain sodas, but others have cans. One big bonus of the package is that sodas on Royal Caribbean's private island destinations ( Perfect Day at Coco Cay and Labadee ) are included. The only time you can't get a free soda with this package is with room service (because room service, other than continental breakfast, comes with a $7.95 service fee, no matter what you order) or from your cabin's minibar.

You can bring up to 12 cans of soda (or bottles up to 17 ounces) per person on board with you in your carry-on luggage when you board the ship. So, why would you want a Classic Soft Drinks Package?

It's a question of convenience. I've been known to take a couple of 16-ounce bottles of soda on board with me, but carrying on much more than that is a big hassle. With a Classic Soft Drinks Package, you can easily access your beverage of choice anywhere you are on board — including ordering sodas from roaming bar servers at the pool, in the casino or at events and shows — or on Royal Caribbean's private islands . You don't have to return to your room to grab a soda. It's also great for older kids and teens who might be roaming the ship with friends.

Refreshment Package

This is my favorite Royal Caribbean drink package. It includes still and sparkling water, sodas (with the included Freestyle magic cup), mocktails, premium coffees and teas (but not those from Starbucks stand-alone stores or kiosks) and freshly squeezed juices.

With this package, you can order almost anything nonalcoholic at bars and most restaurants on board. The Refreshment Package does not include shakes at Johnny Rockets, which are only included with the Deluxe Beverage Package.

Even the smoothies and protein shakes at Vitality Cafe and milkshakes at Johnny Rockets are included in this package, as is the sweet tea at Portside BBQ on Oasis of the Seas. Want a strawberry slushy? Order a virgin strawberry daiquiri. Want hot cocoa? Covered. How about a virgin mudslide? A bartender will happily blend up vanilla ice cream, coffee, hazelnut syrup and chocolate syrup into a perfect mocha shake.

As with the Classic Soft Drinks Package, you can order your nonalcoholic beverages, from sparkling water to fancy mocktails, from your pool lounger or blackjack table.

Plus, with the Refreshment Package, you've solved the problem of needing water to take off the ship with you for excursions and what to drink while on the private islands. It's all included in this package.

Deluxe Beverage Package

This package takes all that's available in the Refreshment Package (sodas, water, mocktails, premium coffee and tea, and fresh-squeezed juice) and adds cocktails, spirits and liquors, as well as beer by the bottle or can and wine by the glass.

There are some limits on brands available with the package, but the list includes imported, domestic and craft beer, an extensive wine list and commonly ordered spirit brands on drinks up to $14. Any bar server can tell you what's available on your cruise.

You also get a hefty 40% discount on bottles of wine up to $100 and a 20% discount on bottles over $100. It's handy for sharing a bottle with your travel partner at dinner.

As with the Classic Soft Drinks and Refreshment packages, you can use the Deluxe Beverage Package anywhere on board (except stand-alone Starbucks locations). Use it in restaurants, bars and any other venue where a bar server is present, as well as at either of Royal Caribbean's private island destinations. The Deluxe Beverage Package also includes milkshakes at Johnny Rockets.

This package comes with a few caveats. If one person in a cabin buys this package, everyone of legal drinking age in the cabin must buy the same package, according to cruise line policy. If someone in your room does not drink alcohol, don't worry. I've encountered many people who have called customer service and downgraded one or more non-drinking adults to a Refreshment Package.

Related: 15 ways that cruising newbies waste money on their first cruise

The package also does not include drinks that come with souvenir glasses, but you can order the same drink in a regular glass.

If your vacation plans include alcoholic beverages, buying this package is a nice way to pay your cruise bar tab in advance rather than deal with the shock of a high bill at the end of the cruise.

Cafe Select Coffee Card

This option is ideal for cruisers who prefer a little fancier caffeine fix than what a simple cup of coffee provides. This card entitles you to any 15 specialty espresso-based coffees throughout your cruise. (This package excludes beverages from Starbucks stores or cafes.) One shot of espresso equals one card punch. If you order a specialty coffee that includes two shots of espresso, you will pay for that one drink with two punches.

Unlike Royal Caribbean's other drink packages, the Cafe Select Coffee Card is not restricted to one person, and anyone in your cabin can use it.

What do Royal Caribbean drink packages cost?

The cruise line uses dynamic pricing on beverage packages the same way it does on cruise fares. That means you won't know the prices for each package before you book a cruise. Demand, destination and promotions play a big part in the pricing, especially for the Deluxe Beverage Package, causing them to fluctuate slightly.

Here's what you can expect a Royal Caribbean drink package to cost:

  • Water Package : 12 bottles for $39; 24 bottles for $69
  • Classic Soft Drinks Package : $12.99 per person, per day
  • Refreshment Package : $29 per person, per day
  • Deluxe Beverage Package : $56 to $105 per person, per day (depending on your ship and trip)
  • Cafe Select Coffee Card : $31 per card

The prices listed above do not include an automatic 18% gratuity (which is also applied to the coffee card). You'll want to factor that amount into your travel budget if you decide to purchase a package.

You will notice that the Deluxe Beverage Package price range listed above is a bit wider than what is posted on Royal Caribbean's site. Posted price ranges include the disclaimer that prices on individual sailings may vary. We used a realistic range of prices from Royal Caribbean guests who have booked cruises and paid for drink packages in the past 12 months.

The best time to buy Royal Caribbean drink packages

You can purchase a beverage package as soon as you book your cruise, but should you? A lot depends on how soon your ship will depart. If you're sailing within a few months, go ahead and get any packages you plan to buy — unless Black Friday happens before you sail. Black Friday deals on drink packages are generally the lowest you'll find all year.

The package that varies most in price is the Deluxe Beverage Package. Its price is higher during peak travel times and on cruises with stops at private islands. Buying this package ahead of time is always cheaper than purchasing it once you're on board.

Royal Caribbean does advertise price drops and deals for pre-cruise purchases. If you're waiting and hoping for a deal, frequent cruisers report that you should look at the actual price per person, per day, not at the percentage off or BOGO deals, to determine if the package price is where you want it.

Is a Royal Caribbean drink package worth it?

Now that you know your choices and why you might want each package, let's get down to the nitty-gritty of whether these packages are worth purchasing.

The 1-liter bottles in the Water Package cost roughly the same as a 12-ounce bottle from a bar. That makes this package a deal, but only if you prefer bottled water over taps or dispensers. It's also convenient to have the water delivered to your cabin, eliminating the need to bring a case of bottles on board or search for a bottle when you want water on the ship.

When ordering an individual soda on the ship, your charge will be what you'd expect to pay at a land-based restaurant, plus an 18% gratuity added automatically. When you ask a bar server for a soda on the ship, you'll be charged just over $4 per soda with the tip, regardless of whether it comes in a can or from a fountain.

As the starting point for the Classic Soft Drinks Package is just over $15 per person, per day with the gratuity, you'll need to count on drinking a minimum of four sodas a day for it to be a good value.

If you prefer nonalcoholic beverages, you can expect to pay around $7 for mocktails and protein shakes, $5 for lattes at non-Starbucks locations and close to $9 for smoothies. These prices are before the automatic 18% gratuity.

Here's what your daily consumption might look like on the Refreshment Package: You could start with a morning latte ($6 after you add gratuity), grab water for your excursion ($3.84), enjoy a soda at lunch ($4), sip a couple of mocktails during the afternoon ($8.25 each), have another soda with dinner ($4) and enjoy another mocktail for the show or in the casino ($8.25).

That puts you at over $40 for the day, making the Refreshment Package a deal at $34 (with tip) per person, per day. Drink much less than that, and this Royal Caribbean drink package won't be worth it. The Refreshment Package price varies only slightly between sailings.

For alcoholic drinks, prices vary a lot based on your order. Beer and hard cider average $7 to $9. Wine by the glass is $9 to $25. Cocktails are $10 to $14, except for the drink of the day, which is $8. These prices do not include the 18% gratuity.

carnival cruise drink package gratuity

When deciding if Royal Caribbean's Deluxe Beverage Package is worth it, be sure to factor in nonalcoholic drinks you are likely to have, not just those with alcohol. How many premium coffees do you drink each day, including one with your dessert at dinner? How many bottles of water and sodas?

The value of those often adds up to $25 or more per day. That leaves you with somewhere between $30 and $80 per day to spend on alcoholic drinks to break even.

If you're lucky and can purchase your package at the lowest possible price, almost anyone who drinks a combination of nonalcoholic drinks and a couple of cocktails daily would break even. But if your purchase price is somewhere in the middle of the price range (where most people land), you would need to consume a minimum of $55 per day beyond the average nonalcoholic beverages to break even. That equals six beers, or four or five glasses of wine or cocktails.

carnival cruise drink package gratuity

For fans of specialty coffees, this package could save you money. Based on the price of a single espresso shot latte (about $6 after you add gratuity), you would only get five coffees for roughly the same cost as the coffee card. Since you get 15 single espresso shot beverages with the coffee card, you get more than double the number of coffees for the same price.

Whichever package you choose, your value may also depend on your itinerary and activities. On a Caribbean cruise that includes a sea day or two and a stop at CocoCay, you'll likely drink more — simply because you're relaxing more than touring, and the hot temperatures will make you thirsty.

But what about a port-intensive cruise in Europe where you are off the ship for long hours and likely to be sampling local beverages? In that case, the ship's beverage package might not come through for you.

Combined packages

If you mainly drink specialty coffees and sodas, one way to save a little money on your beverages is to combine the Cafe Select Coffee Card with the Classic Soda Package.

For example, you would need to purchase the Refreshment Package to get both sodas and premium coffees and teas, which is $29 per person, per day. The cost for the Cafe Select Coffee Card with the Classic Soda Package would run you $12.99 per day, plus a one-time cost of $31 for the card. So, for a five-night cruise, the Refreshment Package would cost you $145 per person; the combined Cafe Select Coffee Card and Classic Soda would cost $95.95 per person. You could spend even less if you're traveling with a partner and want to share one coffee card and each get your own soda package.

Additional factors

Before you decide if a Royal Caribbean drink package is worth it, there are two more things to consider: your Crown & Anchor loyalty status and your Casino Royale player status .

If you are a Diamond C&A member, your SeaPass card will be loaded with four free drinks per day. Diamond Plus members get five drinks, and Pinnacle members get six. Those can be water, specialty coffee or tea (other than from Starbucks and Desserted), sodas from bar servers, beer, wine or cocktails up to $14 (except at Bionic Bar).

As for casino perks, if your status is Prime or higher, you can drink free from the casino bar anytime it is open.

Those free perks could make the difference in which package you choose, if any. For example, a Diamond member might use her free drink allotment on cocktails and wine and save money with a Refreshment or Soda Package for her other daily drinks. Or, perhaps, the free drinks are enough that it's cheaper to buy a few nonalcoholic beverages a la carte.

Diamond Plus members also have a discount of 30% on Deluxe Beverage Packages when purchased on board. That's rarely a good deal unless you simply forget to buy in advance, as pre-purchase in the cruise planner or app is almost always at least 30% lower than the onboard price.

Bottom line: Is a drink package on Royal Caribbean right for you?

carnival cruise drink package gratuity

Now that you have all the facts, there are several ways to look at Royal Caribbean's drink packages to determine if you should get one.

First, consider every kind of drink you will likely pay for on board. Are you happy with beverages that are included in the cruise fare? Those include tap water, drip coffee, tea, milk, lemonade and juice from a dispenser at breakfast. Or, will your vacation only be complete with morning lattes, smoothies, fruity drinks by the pool and wine with dinner?

For some people, it's easy. If you're likely to drink four or five cocktails most days, plus specialty coffee, waters for excursions, soda and a glass of wine at dinner, your total, if purchased individually, would easily exceed $80 per day. Unless your sailing has a higher-than-average price for the package, go for it.

However, if you typically only drink a couple of glasses of wine at dinner, you aren't likely to break even — at least, not on the Deluxe Beverage Package. In that case, skip the package that includes alcohol and do the math on the Refreshment Package.

If you drink soda, the difference in price between the Classic Soft Drinks Package and the Refreshment Package is $16. Almost any combination of two other drinks — lattes, mocktails, smoothies or bottled water — makes the Refreshment Package a deal for you. If you can live without the extras, stick with the soda-only package.

If none of those looks like a bargain, pay as you go. Some people set a daily drink budget and check themselves (or their kids) against their folio in the Royal Caribbean app or on the interactive TV in their cabin. I've even met people who bring cash along to pay their drink balance daily at guest services to stay on track.

The other side of the equation is to factor the price of the drink package into the total vacation cost to make the cruise more of an all-inclusive vacation experience. Think about it like you would an all-inclusive land-based resort. When you vacation at one of those, you not only wouldn't know the price of the drinks you consume, but you also would not care.

If you're more interested in a stress-free vacation where you don't have to agonize about the cost of every drink you consume than you are in paying the least amount of money possible for your vacation, a Royal Caribbean drink package is totally worth it.

The bottom line is that drink packages on Royal Caribbean expand your choices. You can use packages to make your cruise as all-inclusive as you'd like (and maybe save some money in the process), or you can opt to cruise and drink in pay-as-you-go mode. Either way, you'll find plenty of fun cocktails and mocktails, as well as your favorite wine and beer, to enhance your vacation at sea.
