Boat Excursion Lesson Plan

Did you know a boat can be built out of concrete and it will still float? As long as the boat is lighter than the water it displaces, it will stay above water. And what makes a boat move through the water? Throughout history, boats have been powered by wind, propellers, oars, motors, paddles, and ocean and river currents. Sailboats, which have been around for 5,000 years, can reach speeds of over 47 knots (about 54 mph) from wind power alone!

When is the Philly Pride March and Festival? Parade route info, timing and more

By Alexandra Simon

Updated on: June 2, 2024 / 11:18 AM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- This June, Philadelphia will mark 52 years since the city's first Gay Pride Parade. As one of the country's largest pride festivals, the City of Brotherly Love has lots in store for 2024.

The upcoming march and festival will feature America's largest rainbow pride flag, which measures 400 feet long. The celebration will also have its first-ever headliner in RuPaul's Drag Race finalist Sapphira Cristal , and feature the most businesses in event history.

If you're heading to Philly Pride, here's what you need to know.

When is the Philly Pride parade and festival?

The Philadelphia Pride March and Festival will take place Sunday, June 2, 2024. The march begins near Washington Square Park in Center City and ends in Philly's Midtown Village neighborhood, aka the Gayborhood.

Where does the Philadelphia Pride march start and end?

The march begins at 10:30 a.m. at 6th and Walnut streets and continues northbound on 6th to Walnut, westbound on Walnut to 10th, southbound on 10th to Locust and ends at 1100 Locust Street.

Where is the pride festival?

The Pride festival begins at noon Sunday immediately following the 2024 march. The festival continues until 7 p.m. Sunday and will be centered around 13th and Locust streets, featuring hundreds of food vendors, artists, community groups, bars and more.

What is the theme for Philly Pride 2024?

The theme for the 2024 Philadelphia Pride March and Festival is "Be You."

According to Philly Pride 365, this year's march is also "an ode to the Reminder Day Demonstrations that were held in front of Independence Hall on Chestnut Street from 1965 until 1969 to raise awareness of bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination toward the LGBTQ+ community and to send the message that 'Gay is good.'"

The march will start with speeches from community leaders, guests and a land acknowledgment from the Lenape Tribe.

How to get to the march and festival

Because street parking around the march and festival is limited, and multiple road closures will be in place, attendees are encouraged to use public transportation.

Several SEPTA bus routes will drop riders off near the march's starting line, and SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line stops at the 5th Street Independence Hall station.

For those just attending the festival, the Walnut Locust station on the Broad Street Line stops just a few blocks from 13th and Locust.

Road closures for the Philly Pride March and Festival

More than a dozen road closures will go be effect from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. The following streets will be posted as "Temporary No Parking" zones during that time:

  • Juniper Street from Walnut Street to Cypress Street
  • Cypress Street from Juniper Street to 12th Street
  • 13th Street from Walnut Street to Pine Street
  • 12th Street from Walnut Street to Pine Street
  • Quince Street from Walnut Street to Pine Street
  • Locust Street from Juniper Street to 11th Street
  • Pine Street from Juniper Street to 11th Street
  • Spruce Street from Juniper Street to 11th Street
  • Chancellor Street from Juniper Street to 12th Street
  • St. James Street from 13th Street to 12th Street
  • S. Camac Street from Walnut Street to Pine Street
  • Irving Street from Juniper Street to 13th Street
  • Schubert Alley from S. Camac Street 12th Street
  • Manning Street from S. Camac Street to 12th Street

SEPTA bus routes will be detoured from their normal routes starting at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday because of these closures through about 8 p.m.

Dior Cruise 2025: Capturing the Castle

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Maria Grazia Chiuri became Maria Queen of Scots — for a day — raising an army of models dressed in lace, black velvet and tartan, and letting them loose in the grand, Italianate gardens at Scotland’s 15th century Drummond Castle.

She had fortune on her side. It usually rains during the Dior resort shows, no matter where they take place, but Monday’s skies were blue and blazing with sunshine — a minor miracle in Scotland, which is even rainier than England. The evening was chilly, but that’s Scotland, and there was no room for compliant. The rain is set to return on Tuesday.

New Study: Why Premium Brands Have Seen the Biggest Gains with Gen-Z Over Others

In a wink to all those wet shows, various versions of the Eurythmics’ “Here Comes the Rain Again” played as models strode around the geometric paths and mazes of the gardens.

Chiuri had been wanting to stage a show in Scotland for years, and for myriad reasons. She was keen to carry on the Dior tradition, learn more about the local textiles, and pursue her women’s history studies.

The collection was inspired, in part, by Clare Hunter, the textile expert and author of “Embroidering Her Truth: Mary Queen of Scots and the Language of Power.” Chiuri also worked closely with her friend Justine Picardie, who wrote “Miss Dior: A Wartime Story of Courage and Couture,” to explore Christian Dior’s ties with Scotland.

She pored over behind-the-scenes, black-and-white images from the 1955 spring Dior show, which took place in the ballroom of the Gleneagles Hotel, and used the images as patches on a cape coat, and on the T-shirts and printed bags and blankets that Dior handed out to guests at the show.

Chiuri, who’d only been to Scotland a few times before she began work on the collection, was captivated by the romance of it all.

“The country is very cinematic and so present in our imagination,” she said during a preview at her temporary studio in Edinburgh, an hour’s ride from Drummond Castle.

“It’s poetic, romantic and like a fairy tale place with all the castles. Think about how the outdoor culture of the country has influenced designers like Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen — to name a few. I wasn’t surprised that Mr. Dior was fascinated by this country and its textiles,” she added.

Chiuri channeled her own fascination into a handsome, wearable collection that was made from hard and soft elements, fit for warriors and regal ladies alike. Minidresses had stiff sculptural skirts nodding to suits of armor, while sparkling knits dotted with sparkles resembled chain mail. The Elizabethan puff sleeves on sheer tops were the ultimate in power shoulders.

Footwear was ferocious, fit for battle — or for fly fishing. Models in the most delicate of creamy lace dresses walked in black stompy boots, some with lots of hardware, unzipped wellies, or tall waders with saucy garter strap details.

One flat, square-toed style with thick buckled straps resembled a ballet shoe, and gave some of the long, romantic dresses a monastic edge.

“Mary Stuart’s wardrobe mixed very fragile lace with velvet, and there was a dialogue between very different materials,” said Chiuri, referring to Mary Queen of Scots. “So in the show we mixed together sportswear with fragile materials. Corsets act like accessories, while cotton and wool fabrics come with embroideries.”

There were contrasts from top to bottom. Some models’ braided hair was threaded with gold studs, while others wore delicate veils dotted with sparkles that resembled tears, courtesy of Stephen Jones.

Chiuri visited Scotland multiple times over the last few months, making trips to Johnstons of Elgin weaving mill; examining Esk Cashmere’s Fair Isle and other traditional knitwear designs; and delving into the archives at Robert Mackie, which makes ceremonial headwear worn by the Scottish military regiments.

She flew to the Outer Hebrides to watch how Harris tweed woolens are made (by artisans, often farmers, who weave in their homes on treadle looms) and worked with the collective on a special tartan for the collection, in colors of the Scottish countryside, such as green, yellow and violet.

Those tartans opened the show: some resembled blankets wrapped around the body and were secured with belts and harnesses, while others came as draped skirt suits with fringed edges. They had a wild feel to them, while other long tartan skirts had parachute and toggle details and a waft of punk.

Chiuri loves the idea of a kilt as the original multipurpose garment. “It’s like the sari, or the toga. It’s one piece, like a blanket secured with a belt. It was the first way that different cultures dressed themselves — with a single textile,” she said.

Chiuri tapped local designer Samantha McCoach of the brand Le Kilt to create a dedicated design for the show, inspired by the moss and the various green shoots from the Scottish countryside. She also put her own spin on the classic shape, creating dark cotton “working” kilts — long or short — with pockets and contrast stitching.

She even dashed up a few for the men on her team. “There’s a very famous song in Italy about women wanting to see men in skirts,” said Chiuri with a big laugh.

Her men, she said, “are working backstage and it’s a good solution, right? It’s better than carrying a bag! I even had a kilt made for myself — it means your hands are free and you can run.” The Dior men (including Jones) embraced the look, teaming their kilts with argyle socks and black loafers, or with Converse high tops. Nobody seemed to be complaining.

“Next, I want to do a calendar, with all my men wearing their kilts,” said Chiuri, the queen in full command of her army.

Novak Djokovic: French Open withdrawal reminds us of inevitability of time

PARIS, FRANCE - JUNE 03: Novak Djokovic of Serbia falls after stretching for a forehand against Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina in the Men's Singles fourth round match during Day Nine of the 2024 French Open at Roland Garros on June 03, 2024 in Paris, France. (Photo by Clive Mason/Getty Images)

This story has been updated to reflect Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal from the French Open on Tuesday June 4.

It’s the question that lingers over the final years of the all-time greats, especially in an individual sport where no one cuts them and no one steals their job. It’s up to them to decide when enough is enough.

What they have less control over: will the end come slowly, or all at once?

In this era of men’s tennis that has been unlike any other, it looked like there was an eerie pattern developing for the three best players that was starting to make the answer seem as unavoidable as the lines that deepen on any forehead over time.

It happened to Roger Federer, and then it happened to Rafael Nadal, and from the looks of Monday’s morose late afternoon on Court Philippe-Chatrier, it figured to be happening to Novak Djokovic , too, at a miserable moment.

Just when it seemed like he had jettisoned a five-month funk in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday morning in Paris , Djokovic seemed to be falling into the kind of mundane-yet-freak injury that always seems to arrive in a career’s twilight.

city cruises philadelphia

It was early in the second set during his round-of-16 match against 23rd seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina. He didn’t trip over a line or crash awkwardly into a line judge.

After a few weeks of soreness from the wear and tear of two decades of professional tennis, and the impact of a 3am finish, a little slip was all it took. Djokovic asked officials if they would brush the courts more often to spread the clay and cover up the slick spots — as he had done in that late-night epic against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti — but was rebuffed. Two dozen Grand Slam titles will only get you so far.

One moment he was doing the same sideways and backwards pivoting across the red clay that he has done since he was a small boy learning tennis in the low mountains of Serbia. The next he was clutching at his right knee and motioning to his team with two hands going in different directions, seemingly telling them that one part of his joint had gone one way, while the other had gone another.

Soon a trainer was on the court treating him, lying him on the ground, trying to ease the tension around the knee. He took some anti-inflammatories, but when Djokovic returned to the court, it quickly became apparent that he could no longer move — and not move like something even close to a world-class player, just really move at all.

Three or four or five careful steps followed every stretch for a ball. Often, he just watched shots dart past him from a few feet away without giving chase. So many of them, he would have put back and even put away on nearly any other day, chasing across the court with the ferocity that, for a while now, no one else has been able to match.

“At one point I didn’t know, to be honest, whether I should continue or not with what’s happening,” he said.

He continued through the match, but could not continue through the knee problem. The following afternoon, the world No. 1 withdrew from the tournament, citing a tear to the medial meniscus in his right knee. No decision has been made on surgery, but the layoff in any case will be several weeks, putting his chase for an eighth Wimbledon title and that elusive Olympic medal in doubt. Then there’s the question of the recovery from the recovery. He’ll repair the tear. Whether he can repair his game? Maybe he can. But that’s not how it went for Nadal, Federer or Andy Murray.

Federer ultimately fell to the degenerative after-effects of surgery to repair a torn meniscus while running a bath for his children. That’s right, nothing more than a twist following the run of a faucet, multiple surgeries and then ultimately an ugly, dispiriting afternoon at Wimbledon in 2021 that ended with him barely able to move during a final set that ended with no games for him and six for Hubert Hurkacz.

A year later, he announced he was done.

city cruises philadelphia

All Nadal was doing was sprinting across the backcourt during a second-round match at the Australian Open in 2023.

One moment, running for a bull-whip forehand as a defending champion. The next, pulling up as if he’d been shot, playing as Djokovic did on Monday, limping through the final sets, somehow managing to win games he had no business winning at half-speed with tears in his hip — and then missing a year of tennis.

go-deeper

Naomi Osaka and the cruelty of tennis comebacks

Murray’s hip simply gave way after so many years of pounding and sprinting and sliding, unable to withstand one more punishing match at this very tournament against Stan Wawrinka in 2017. In the run-up to their meeting at Roland Garros this year, Murray said he couldn’t sleep with pain after the match, that he knew somewhere in his mind that, despite being able to complete the match, he had done something more terminal. Without hip resurfacing surgery, his career would have been done.

He and Nadal are still making a go of it after those major surgeries and long layoffs. Both lost in straight sets as unseeded floaters at this French Open, a shadow of the players they once were.

city cruises philadelphia

Monday, life in the mid-late 30s came for Djokovic. He has already defied time as no one else, winning three Grand Slam titles last year and, in the Wimbledon final, likely coming within a floating forehand he rarely misses of a fourth. He stretched his record career slam count to 24. He finished the year as the world No 1 for a record eighth time.

Only a fool would have argued that he couldn’t keep rolling this year, even knowing he would turn 37 two weeks ago. His closest competitors spoke of him like he was some other sort of species. When would he stop smothering them? Most of them had some version of the same answer: when he decided he didn’t want to anymore.

For a good two hours Monday evening, that looked very wrong. The indignities of age and wear and tear had finally gotten him. The proud warrior that he is, he would make Cerundolo win it in his own right rather than raise the white flag and default.

go-deeper

Ghosts of clay courts past: Rafael Nadal's comeback is really about his legacy

Still, this was the thing that couldn’t be beaten even with the maximum dose of pain medication a doctor gave him after the third set. It would take 30-45 minutes to kick in. Could he last that long? Likely not. It was sweet the way he climbed back into the fourth set, rallying from a service break down to draw, even then rousing the crowd as if coming back with one functioning knee might be possible.

Maybe it was that Serbian fighting spirit that Djokovic and his fellow countrymen often speak about. Maybe it was the anti-inflammatories and pain medication finally kicking in. Maybe the crowd brought him back. Maybe — more definitely — it was Cerundolo overawed by a match against one of the final bosses of tennis in the 2000s feeling like playing in easy mode. This often happens in tennis — and when the player at the other end who is struggling isn’t Novak Djokovic.

During a match in Bucharest earlier this year, Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild had to finish off Luca Nardi, who played on after twisting his ankle so badly that he couldn’t run. Seyboth Wild kept hitting the ball back to Nardi, even letting him hit winners. Cerundolo seemed unable to take control, scarcely believing that it was an option, hitting placid rally balls into Djokovic’s backhand instead of targeting the forehand, where his weight would have to be transmitted through the knee.

Probably it was a lot of all four.

Then slowly, and all at once, Djokovic bent into his backhands again. He was chasing and lunging after drop shots. He was smacking his forehand into the corners, forcing Cerundolo to scramble and hit one more shot and then another until he had the fourth set and began to cruise in the fifth and, of course, he was going to win.

There was a lunging-into-a-split drop volley late in the fifth set that will be shown on Roland Garros highlight reels as long as there are Roland Garros highlight reels.

Cerundolo and life in the mid-30s would come at him again. The Argentine fought back. Djokovic slipped and spilt into the clay on that wobbly knee, once with a high-speed crash on the red dust. But, finally, after four hours and 39 minutes, he had beaten them both.

“I guess that’s probably a weaker part of my body that has had some few weeks of history,” he said.

A few weeks and a lifetime. And so the weakness proved. Now he will see whether he gets to rebuild it and go again: slowly, all at once, or not at all.
