Luke Combs rattles stadium at Jacksonville concert, ready to come back and do it again

country music tours florida

Luke Combs was midway through his Friday night show , standing front and center by himself on stage and playing one of his earliest songs, "This One's For You," just as he has in a thousand bars and clubs on his way to the top.

When he finished, a sly grin briefly crossed his face, signaling that he was as surprised as anyone to find Luke Combs headlining before 45,000 people at EverBank Stadium, and coming back the next night to do it again.

Combs poured his heart out onto the stage for nearly two hours Friday night, walking on stage to a recorded version of "Sweet Caroline" that had the crowd singing along so loud that there must have been noise complaints in San Marco.

Combs, who was playing at the Mavericks nightclub in the old Jacksonville Landing less than eight years ago, was at the top of a bill of country up-and-comers. He had four opening acts on Friday and will be back at the stadium Saturday to do it again, with a whole different cast of openers. It's fair to guess that more than a few fans who were at Friday's show were impressed enough to buy tickets for Saturday.

Saturday night: Have tickets for Luke Combs' concerts in Jacksonville? Here's what you need to know

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Next week: George Strait, Chris Stapleton in concert at EverBank Stadium. Here's what you should know

Combs isn't a high-energy, tear-around-the-stage performer like Kenny Chesney, who is also headlining stadium tours. And he doesn't have decades worth of hits like George Strait , who brings his tour to the same stadium next week. That's what makes Combs drawing 90,000-plus fans over the weekend so impressive.

Combs became the hottest thing in country thanks to smart songwriting and a band that can absolutely rock and roll. He doesn't have a great voice, but he has a powerful one that had no trouble Friday reaching the folks in the nosebleed seats. If you needed further proof that the new generation of country has arrived, just look at the cover songs he chose to include in Friday night's set. He didn't play Hank Williams or George Jones when he wanted to salute his roots, he went to Brooks and Dunn's '90s hit "Brand New Man," Ed Sheeran's "Dive," Shania Twain's "Who's Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" and Dierks Bentley's "What Was I Thinking."

Combs, a Carolina Panthers fan, wisely wore a Jaguars hat for Friday's show, running through 25 songs and sticking around on stage well after the last number had run its course, shaking hands and signing autographs with fans on the field. He had the crowd on its feet and singing along from the moment he hit the stage to "Must've Never Been Me."

There's certainly a lot more rock in Combs' music than in, say, Strait's. Other than a little banjo or fiddle or pedal steel here and there, his band could easily be backing a heavy metal singer, with the guitar players in particular throwing thunderous riffs at the stadium all night.

Friday night's show was superbly paced, building up the excitement, then giving fans a chance to catch their breath with slow numbers like the tender "Man He Sees in Me" to a sea of waving cell phone lights, then cranking it right back up with big sing-alongs like "Hurricane" or stompers like "Cold as You." The tour has been playing back-to-back nights at stadiums around the country, and fans at Saturday's show can likely expect to see a lot of the same songs performed, just in a different order.

Desperately seeking shade: Where fans can find the coolest spots at EverBank Stadium

Friday's show reached a fever pitch a little after 10 p.m. when the crowd sang along with every word to "Beautiful Crazy," then erupted at the first notes of "Fast Car," the old Tracy Chapman song that helped Combs learn to play guitar. If you could have predicted that song as a big country hit that would get 45,000 people on their feet, you probably ought to be playing the lottery more often.

The way country music develops its young artists, it's likely that one of the openers from Friday or Saturday's show is going to be headlining their own tours in the next year or two.

Who opened for Luke Combs in Jacksonville?

Friday's show opened with Texas five-piece band the Wilder Blue. The band kicked off the evening with a gorgeous National Anthem, then rolled right into its brief set highlighted by a spirited "Dixie Darlin'." Maybe 20 percent of the seats were filled when the band came on.

There was very little time between acts at the show. Wilder Blue walked off and an army of roadies hit the stage immediately. Less than 10 minutes later, the stage was set up for the next act, Hailey Whitters, and the crew was already tuning her guitars. Thirty five minutes after Wilder Blue started its set, Whitters was on stage doing hers.

Whitters, the reigning Academy of Country Music Awards New Female Artist of the Year , was by far the poppiest act on Friday, working the stage in a sundress, boots, long ponytail and what looked like a pretty good sunburn. "I'm freaking out seeing all y'all here," she said as the seats steadily filled. She's a strong songwriter and kept her numbers short and sweet to squeeze in as many as she could in the 26 minutes she was allotted. "Everything She Ain't" and her new single, "I'm in Love," were highlights.

West Virginian Charles Wesley Godwin followed, opening his set with his own "Cue Country Roads" and closing it with John Denver's "Country Roads." He and his band, the Allegheny High, have clearly been playing together for a while, with a real tight delivery and a knack for walking the fine line between rock and country, setting mandolin and banjo against a heavy beat.

Cody Jinks was Friday's final opener and was maybe too big for the role. He and his band, the Tone Deaf Hippies, played for about 45 minutes, but could have gone on much longer and no one would have minded. Jinks, looking menacing dressed in black with dark shades and a ferocious beard, opened with "Fast Hand," which featured a pedal steel solo leading into an organ solo, something you're not likely to find in country music or anywhere else. He has the stage presence of a guy who has played on a million stages and it doesn't matter to him one bit if there are 20 people or 45,000 watching.

The stadium was nearly full by the time Jinks got the crowd singing along to "Mamma's Song." His new single, "Outlaws and Mustangs," has everything it needs to become a big summertime smash. He was halfway through his set before it finally got dark enough for the light show to be noticeable, around the time he was playing "Must Be the Whiskey."

Who's opening for Luke Combs's Saturday show in Jacksonville?

Saturday's show starts at 5:45 p.m. Openers are Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.

George Strait, Chris Stapleton in concert at EverBank Stadium. Here's what you should know

country music tours florida

The echoes from two Luke Combs concerts will barely have time to fade before another big country crowd heads to Jacksonville's EverBank Stadium, this time for a triple bill of George Strait , Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town on Saturday, May 11.

Strait is about as big a star as you'll find anywhere in country music, and Stapleton isn't far behind. In fact, all three acts have headlined shows at venues in the Jacksonville area.

Strait is a "neotraditional" country star, sort of a throwback to the days when country music leaned heavily on pedal-steel guitars and fiddles. He's sold something like 120 million albums and has a record-setting 60 number-one hits. He's in the Country Music Hall of Fame, was named Artist of the Decade by the Academy of Country Music and has won more Country Music Association awards than anyone. Only Elvis Presley and the Beatles have released more gold or platinum albums.

Here's what you need to know about the show.

Where is George Strait playing in Jacksonville?

The concert is at EverBank Stadium , home of the Jacksonville Jaguars .

Who is opening for George Strait in Jacksonville?

First up is Little Big Town, a quartet that's toured with Strait in the past and has been named Vocal Group of the Year several times each by the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Awards. The band has played Jacksonville shows at Freebird Live , Metropolitan Park, the arena, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Daily's Place, plus they did a 2012 show at Mayport Naval Station before a Georgetown-Florida basketball game aboard an aircraft carrier and played at Florida Country Superfest in the stadium in 2013.

Chris Stapleton is a Kentucky native who wrote hit songs for Strait, Kenny Chesney and Luke Bryan before busting out on his own with his quadruple-platinum debut album, "Traveler." He's won ten Grammy Awards and is the reigning Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year and Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year. Four of his five studio albums have gone platinum or better and all five topped the country charts. He's played at least three times at Jacksonville's arena and once at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.

How much are George Strait tickets in Jacksonville?

Tickets are available through the stadium's website, everbankstadium.com , ranging from $125-$650.

Has George Strait ever played a concert in Jacksonville?

Strait has been coming to Jacksonville since at least 1988. He played at the old Jacksonville Coliseum in '88, '94 and '95, headlined a huge country show at what was then called Alltel Stadium in 2000 and played the arena in '11 . He was scheduled to play at the arena in 2008 but came down with the flu backstage and had to reschedule for the following year; Little Big Town was the opening act for that show and played anyway.

Didn't George Strait retire from touring years ago?

Strait made quite a big deal about retiring from the road, even going on a Cowboy Rides Away Tour in 2014 and releasing a live album from the final show. He was back on the road a few years later, sort of, playing almost exclusively at the arena in Las Vegas from 2016-21. He now plays "limited engagements" that are a week or two apart.

Can I hold up my phone and record the whole George Strait concert?

There’s no rule against that, but the people sitting behind you will hate you for it.

Florida Georgia Line restaurant founded by Brian Kelley, Tyler Hubbard, permanently closes

Fgl house restaurant by brian kelley & tyler hubbard of florida georgia line was open in downtown nashville from 2017 to 2024..

  • FGL House had "Southern style cuisine with a California flair" in downtown Nashville. Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean & Miranda Lambert also have restaurants in that area.
  • Florida Georgia Line was founded in 2010 by Brian Kelley of Ormond Beach, Florida, and Tyler Hubbard of Monroe, Georgia.
  • Florida Georgia Line's Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard had a viral Instagram incident after the 2020 election with Joe Biden & Donald Trump.

Florida Georgia Line fans, another venture by the " bro-country" duo has come to an end : The band's restaurant, FGL House in Nashville, has permanently closed.

But don't worry. There are plans already in place for that hot property in the Lower Broadway section of downtown Nashville.

When the Southern-style restaurant with a California flair opened in summer 2017, Florida Georgia Line bandmates Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard reflected on why they chose FGL House for Nashville, Tennessee, and not in Florida or Georgia in a Tennessean story. Said Hubbard: "It was a cool opportunity in our hometown here in Nashville that we love — a place we could call our own and gather with our friends, our family and our fans and create a cool environment where people can make great memories."

"What excites Tyler (Hubbard) and I the most is always staying creative," Kelley said in a statement to the Tennessean when FGL House opened in downtown Nashville. "We love seeing what fresh things we can come up with to take our music to a new level and turn our dreams into reality."

Here's what we know about the band and the closing of the restaurant founded by former Florida Georgia Line bandmates Tyler Hubbard of Monroe, Georgia, and Brian Kelley of Ormond Beach, Florida .

What is Florida Georgia Line?

Florida Georgia Line, consisting of bandmates Tyler Hubbard of Georgia and Brian Kelley of Florida, had a "bro-country" music style with elements of rock and hip-hop.

The band was founded in 2010 in Nashville and its debut single "Cruise" in 2012 had more than 7 million downloads and spent 24 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard 's Hot Country Songs chart.

Did country music band Florida Georgia Line win any awards? Did Florida Georgia Line win a Grammy?

In addition to breaking records, over the years, Florida Georgia Line were recognized with wins and nominations for several Academy of Country Music Awards. The band also was nominated multiple times for "vocal duo of the year" for Country Music Association Awards during its time together.

Other notable awards include:

  • In 2018, when Florida Georgia Line was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Best Collaboration with Bebe Rexha
  • The band was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2019 for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for "Meant to Be."

What was Florida Georgia Line's most popular song? What are Florida Georgia Line's albums?

With more than 7 million downloads after its initial release, "Cruise" remains Florida Georgia Line's most popular song.

Florida Georgia Line produced five albums between 2012 and 2021 before each member embarked on solo careers aka "breaking up" in 2022:

  • "Anything Goes" in 2014
  • "Dig Your Roots" in 2016"
  • "Can't Say I Ain't Country" in 2019
  • "Life Rolls On" in 2021
  • Florida Georgia Line Greatest Hits in 2022

Why did Florida Georgia Line break up? What happened to country music's Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard?

Florida Georgia Line fans experienced turmoil when bandmates Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley had disagreements during the 2020 presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Hubbard unfollowed Kelley on Instagram after Biden defeated Trump for the presidency. Hubbard supported Biden, while Kelley supported Trump.

The public reaction to the social media unfollow incident − which included their wives − led to speculation that the band would break up in January 2021. Kelley's father, Ed Kelley, told The Daytona Beach News-Journal that while Hubbard and his son Brian Kelley were working on other projects, Florida Georgia Line was committed to a Live Nation tour.

Kelley did release a solo album in June 2021 called "Sunshine State of Mind," and Tyler Hubbard released a solo song "5 Foot 9" in May 2022.

The band's last performance together was Aug. 31, 2022, at the Minnesota State Fair.

Brian Kelley released a single called "Kiss My Boots" in March 2024.

What was the Florida Georgia Line restaurant? Where was FGL House?

In a May 2017 story from the Tennessean , Florida Georgia Line announced a summer 2017 opening for its FGL House restaurant, bar and entertainment venue in downtown Nashville.

FGL House occupied a four-story, 22,000-square-foot building.

FGL House, 102 3rd Ave. South, Nashville, Tennessee, was the former site of the restaurant that boasted a "Southern style cuisine with a California flair" in the Lower Broadway area in downtown Nashville. Other famous country music stars also opened restaurants and bars there: Luke Bryan's Luke's 32 Bridge (casual home cooking), Jason Aldean's Kitchen and Rooftop Bar (Southern food), and Miranda Lambert's Casa Rosa (Tex-Mex).

What food did FGL House, Florida Georgia Line restaurant, serve? Was there live music at FGL House in Nashville?

When FGL House opened, the multi-platinum duo Florida Georgia Line joined  Alan Jackson, Dierks Bentley and John Rich  as country stars expanding their brands through bars and other venues on Lower Broadway in downtown Nashville.

FGL House featured live music daily and amazing views of the downtown skyline. The kitchen offered Southern-style cuisine with a California flair while bars on each of the four floors served local craft beers and mixed cocktails — many featuring the duo’s own Old Camp Whiskey.

A basement-level lounge with a baby grand piano previously offered a cocktail menu inspired by ‘90s pop culture and specialty martinis. A large video wall showcased music videos by Florida Georgia Line and other country stars along with sporting events.

What will replace FGL House, Florida Georgia Line restaurant in downtown Nashville?

Grammy-winning country artist Lainey Wilson  announced Tuesday, May 7, that she's opening her own bar in the heart of downtown Nashville in summer 2024: Bell Bottoms Up.

“I’ve always wanted to create a destination for all my fans to visit and create new memories at, in the heart of country-music city," Wilson said in a statement. "So, to have a permanent destination in Nashville, is such a dream come true. I can’t wait for all my "Wild Horses" to get to experience my home away from home.”

Spanning 27,000-square-feet, the three-story venue will include a western disco-themed rooftop, two stages and four bars. Elements of Wilson's bar will also call back to her home state of Louisiana, including menu items like her favorite salads, crawfish, shrimp boils and boudin.

The "Heart Like a Truck" singer has been a rising star over the last few years, and now, she's cementing her place at the center of Music City. The project is in partnership with TC Restaurant Group, which also operates Luke Bryan's 32 Bridge, Jason Aldean’s Kitchen and Rooftop Bar, Miranda Lambert's Casa Rosa and Morgan Wallen’s This Bar & Tennessee Kitchen.

Wilson joins Lambert as the second female country star with a venue near the Broadway thoroughfare.

Named after Wilson's fourth studio album Bell Bottom Country, the bar will take over the space of the former FGL House, 120 S. 3rd Ave. South, Nashville, Tennessee.

The Florida Georgia Line bar, which was also a TC Restaurant Group project, remained open for almost two years following  its namesake band's breakup back in 2022 . Country music fans speculated about the bar's potential closure for months after the duo split, and it ultimately closed in the first week of May.

“We are honored that Lainey has trusted us to deliver a venue that is faithful to her story, fans and love for country music,” TC Restaurant Group Vice President of Operations Grant Burlingame said, in a statement. “Fans gravitate to Lainey because of her authentic, down-to-earth personality, and Bell Bottoms Up will be a representation of her character and legacy. Lainey Wilson is one of the biggest names in country music, and we’re proud to partner with her on a venue that celebrates her genuine mark on the industry and brings another female artist to the forefront of Nashville’s Entertainment District.”
