Cemetery Tours

Your memories of new orleans' cities of the dead will linger long after your visit.

Marie Laveau Tomb - St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

New Orleans is a city surrounded by water and built below sea level. This is why our departed spend eternity entombed above ground. Here, graves are family affairs, with remains settling over time to make room for the next generation to move in to what we call the Cities of the Dead. Ornate and historic, funky and other worldly, New Orleans cemeteries are home to everyone from music hit makers to voodoo queens. Tour companies will show you who’s who and explain the history and traditions. Pay homage to fallen yellow fever victims at St. Louis No.1 on Basin Street, the city’s oldest boneyard or visit some of the newer, just as elaborate places.

Here is a list of companies that offer cemetery tours:

Frequently Asked Questions about NOLA Cemeteries

  • Chevron down How many cemeteries do we visit on a tour?

Some of our New Orleans cemetery tours focus on one graveyard, while others include a few over a two- to three-hour experience. Select a specific tour for more information.

  • Chevron down Can I visit St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 without a guide?

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is only accessible on a licensed, guided tour. Because of the graveyard’s notoriety, it has been subject to vandalism over the years and is no longer open to the public unless they visit on a tour. Other New Orleans cemeteries are open to visit without a tour guide.

  • Chevron down Are the graveyards in New Orleans haunted?

Many of New Orleans’ graveyards are considered haunted. Ghosts and spirit sightings have been recorded for hundreds of years, especially in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 and St. Roch Cemetery. However, it’s important to remember that the city’s cemeteries should be treated with respect and cannot be visited at night.

Tour New Orleans’ Historic Graveyards

There is no shortage of fascinating stories and striking sights to uncover in the city’s cemeteries. Explore some of the best cemetery tours in New Orleans and see for yourself why these sites are so well-known around the country.

Home to over 40 cemeteries – and attractions like Voodoo shops and the Museum of Death – it’s safe to say that New Orleans has a bit of a fascination with death. Of course, that might just have something to do with the city’s 300-year history of natural disasters, gruesome murders, bloody battles over territory, and legends of ghosts and vampires.

But beyond the unseen curiosities around the city, New Orleans’ many cemeteries have been an intriguing destinations for tourists and locals alike, especially the above-ground tombs of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Many of NOLA’s cemeteries date back to the 1700s, identified by elaborate tombs, large mausoleums and ornate crypts and sculptures. Cemeteries like St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 are characterized by their crosses, decorative ironwork, white tombs, and hauntingly beautiful surroundings.

Cities of the Dead

The rows upon rows of above-ground tombs were once called “cities of the dead” by Mark Twain, and the name has stuck ever since. But why are the tombs above ground in the first place? The reason for these cities of the dead can be traced back to the 1700s, when early settlers struggled to bury their dead due to environmental conditions.

The New Orleans water table is very high (the city was built below sea level), making it impossible to keep coffins weighed down in shallow graves – dig any deeper and you’re guaranteed to hit water. Early NOLA residents often had to contend with floating caskets and exposed remains of loved ones. Based on the Spanish custom of using burial vaults, the city’s residents arrived at the solution of using above-ground graves. But as the city grew and space became harder to come by, graves were stacked on top of one another and families shared crypts.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

Wondering who is buried in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1? It should come as no surprise that the city’s oldest cemetery is home to its most noteworthy residents like Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau and chess champion Paul Morphy. Even Nicolas Cage – who is not yet deceased, we might add – has already secured his final resting place in the cemetery: a tomb shaped like a white pyramid that stands out from the other tombs in the graveyard. You can’t miss it!

Best Cemeteries to Visit in New Orleans

Other famous New Orleans graveyards are St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 and St. Louis Cemetery No. 3. They both opened in the 1800s after outbreaks of yellow fever and cholera caused a demand for burial space. You’ll see Greek Revival-style tombs, impressive ironwork and carved stone angels. Lafayette Cemetery 1 is well known for being the burial site of immigrants from over 25 different countries. These are some of the best cemeteries to visit in New Orleans.

Nighttime Cemetery Tours in New Orleans

new orleans night graveyard tour

This post covers the best night cemetery tours you can take in New Orleans.

We include tips about what to expect, how much it costs, and other important details to keep in mind.

There are a few cemetery tours in New Orleans that take place after dark, but it’s actually a somewhat uncommon activity because they close the cemeteries at night.

Of the nighttime cemetery tours currently available, there aren’t any that provide access inside of the cemeteries.

Instead, your tour guide will take you to the cemetery gates and discuss some of the spookiest true stories and legends from the area. Although you will be able to visit the cemetery, you won’t be able to enter and take a look around.

That said, this type of activity is offered during the day, and you can learn more about those outings on our post covering New Orleans Cemetery Tours.

One of the nice things about nighttime cemetery bus tours is that they will often take you to multiple cemeteries rather than just one, sometimes with stops at locations that are off the beaten path.

Since transportation is included with the tour, prices range from $40 - $50 per person.

These outings are typically around 2 hours long, and they include multiple stops all around the city.

These nighttime cemetery tours are offered between the hours of 7 pm - 11 pm.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cemetery tours are popular in New Orleans because cemeteries here are unlike most cemeteries in the U.S. Many of the departed are buried above ground in tombs that range from simple to ornate. Plus, these sites are reportedly haunted, making cemeteries all the more popular with ghost hunters.

There are some cemeteries you can visit on your own. Others, such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, can only be viewed on an official tour. It's a good idea to find out whether your cemetery requires a tour guide before your visit; call the cemetery or speak with your hotel's concierge.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the most famous cemetery in the city. In part, this is because of the numerous important figures buried here. It's also the oldest existing cemetery in New Orleans; in fact, people are still laid to rest here each year.

Voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau, activist Homer Plessy, writer Anne Rice and Popeyes founder Al Copeland are just a few of the celebrities buried in the most famous cemeteries in New Orleans. There are other famous individuals (such as politician Huey Long and musician Fats Domino) who are buried in other sites around the city. Actor Nicolas Cage will also be buried here; he has already built a pyramid tomb for himself in St. Louis Cemetery No 1.

Exploring the Cities of the Dead: A Guide to New Orleans' Unique Cemeteries

Understanding Above-Ground Burials

New Orleans’ cemeteries are renowned for their distinctive above-ground tombs, a necessity due to the city’s high water table. These unique burial structures are often referred to as ‘cities of the dead’. Visitors can explore a variety of graves, from wall vaults to elaborate family tombs and group memorials.

The practice of above-ground burials is deeply rooted in local tradition and practicality. In a city where the graves are always above the ground , these tombs ensure that loved ones remain undisturbed by the challenges posed by the environment.

The above-ground tombs are not only a response to geographical constraints but also a canvas for architectural expression and cultural heritage.

Here are some key reasons for above-ground burials in New Orleans:

  • Protection from flooding and water damage
  • Preservation of remains in a secure structure
  • Cultural and historical significance
  • Space efficiency in densely populated urban areas

Holt Cemetery, in contrast, is an example of a below-ground burial site in the city, offering at-need burial space.

The Significance of Voodoo and Jazz in Cemetery Culture

New Orleans’ cemeteries are not just resting places for the dead; they are vibrant cultural hubs that reflect the city’s rich history and traditions. The intertwining of voodoo rituals and jazz music has created a unique cemetery culture unlike any other in the world.

  • Voodoo, with its deep African roots and Caribbean influences, has been a significant part of New Orleans since the 18th century. The cemeteries of New Orleans are often associated with the legendary Voodoo queen Marie Laveau, whose tomb attracts visitors from around the globe.
  • Jazz, born in the lively streets of New Orleans, resonates through the city’s cemeteries, where many jazz legends are laid to rest. The tradition of jazz funerals, with brass bands leading mournful processions, celebrates life with music that stirs the soul.

In the silence of the tombs, one can almost hear the faint whispers of a jazz tune or the distant echo of a voodoo chant, as if the spirits of the past still linger among the living.

The cemeteries serve as a testament to the city’s embrace of its diverse cultural heritage, where the dead are honored with the same vibrancy and passion as the living. From the historic French Quarter to the unique Bayou ecosystem, the cemeteries are a crucial part of the New Orleans experience.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1: A Guided Tour Exclusive

The St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 stands as a testament to New Orleans’ rich history, with its labyrinth of above-ground tombs and mausoleums. This 18th-century burial ground is the final resting place of notable figures such as the Voodoo queen Marie Laveau and Homer Plessy, of the landmark Plessy v. Ferguson case. Access to this historic site is exclusive to guided tours, ensuring a respectful and informative visit.

During the two-hour walking tour, visitors are accompanied by knowledgeable local guides who share insights into the city’s unique burial customs. It’s essential to come prepared; carrying a map and guidebook is recommended, as is being aware of the restrictions, such as the no pets policy.

The experience is both educational and immersive, offering a deeper understanding of the cultural tapestry that is New Orleans.

For those interested in the supernatural, it’s worth noting that while St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is steeped in history, it is distinct from the ghost tours that focus on New Orleans’ haunted tales.

The Haunting Charm of New Orleans Cemetery Tours

The Haunting Charm of New Orleans Cemetery Tours

Ghostly Tales and Haunted Tombs

The allure of New Orleans’ cemeteries extends beyond their historical and architectural significance; they are also a nexus for ghostly tales and haunted tombs. Visitors often report eerie encounters, from supernatural experiences and encounters to inexplicable cold spots amidst the labyrinth of above-ground tombs. These experiences are not just for thrill-seekers but also for those interested in the paranormal aspects of the city’s history.

New Orleans’ cemeteries are a magnet for ghost hunters and enthusiasts of the macabre. The chilling atmosphere and the occasional ghostly sighting contribute to the haunting charm that these ‘cities of the dead’ exude.

For those daring enough to explore these spectral sites, a variety of tours are available. Some focus on the historical and cultural aspects, while others promise a more chilling experience, delving into the legends and ghost stories that shroud these resting places. Here’s a glimpse of what you might expect on such a tour:

  • Hear chilling tales of paranormal activity and ghost sightings.
  • Explore the curious above-ground burial practices.
  • Visit the tombs of famous and infamous residents.
  • Experience the eerie silence and sudden cold spots that hint at the presence of the otherworldly.

Distinguishing Cemetery Tours from Ghost Tours

While both cemetery and ghost tours offer a glimpse into the eerie and historical side of New Orleans, they cater to different interests. Cemetery tours focus on the historical and cultural aspects of the city’s unique burial practices, including the architectural beauty of the tombs and the stories of notable individuals laid to rest. In contrast, ghost tours lean towards the paranormal, often blending historical facts with spine-chilling tales of the supernatural.

  • Cemetery Tours: Emphasize historical significance, architectural details, and cultural practices.
  • Ghost Tours: Highlight paranormal activity, ghost stories, and eerie experiences.

It’s essential to choose the type of tour that aligns with your interests, whether it be a deep dive into the city’s history or an exploration of its haunted legends.

Choosing Your New Orleans Cemetery Adventure

Choosing Your New Orleans Cemetery Adventure

Self-Guided Visits vs. Official Tours

When deciding between a self-guided visit and an official tour of New Orleans’ cemeteries , consider the depth of experience you’re seeking. Self-guided tours offer the freedom to explore at your own pace but may lack the rich storytelling and historical context provided by a knowledgeable guide. Official tours, on the other hand, can offer exclusive access to certain areas, such as the St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, which requires a guided tour for entry.

Here are some points to consider:

  • Self-guided tours allow for a flexible schedule.
  • Official tours often have set times and durations.
  • Some cemeteries have restrictions on access without a guide.

Choosing the right type of tour depends on your interests and how you prefer to engage with the history and culture of the cemeteries.

Remember that while self-guided tours can be a spontaneous adventure, official tours often provide a more structured and informative experience.

It’s also worth noting that some tours, such as the Bayou swamp tours , cater to all ages with educational and wildlife experiences, and are distinct from cemetery tours.

Exploring the historic and hauntingly beautiful cemeteries of New Orleans is an experience like no other. From the ornate above-ground tombs to the rich stories of the city’s past residents, cemetery tours offer a unique glimpse into the cultural tapestry of New Orleans.

Whether you’re interested in the history, the architecture, or the paranormal, these tours provide an insightful and respectful way to appreciate the cities of the dead.

Remember to check if the cemetery you wish to visit requires a guided tour and consider supporting organizations like Save Our Cemeteries to help preserve these monumental sites.

With a variety of tours available, each promising a ghoulishly good time, you’re sure to find one that resonates with your interests and leaves you with a deeper understanding of New Orleans’ storied past.

Do You Need a Car in New Orleans? What You Need to Know

W elcome to the Big Easy! Before we headed down to New Orleans over Spring Break , I were scratching my head trying to decide if renting a car was necessary. Everywhere I looked, advice was vague or conflicting, leaving me more confused than ever. I couldn’t find a definitive answer to the question “Do you need a car in New Orleans?” – so, to be safe, I rented one.

After spending an amazing time soaking up everything this lively city has to offer, I want to make it easier for YOU to decide if you should rent a car, and spoiler: for most trips to New Orleans, you probably won’t need a car.

Whether you’re here to groove to jazz on the streets, feast on beignets, visit City Park or soak up the rich history (or like me all of the above) , I’ve got the lowdown on why going car-free might just be your best bet. Let’s dive in and get you prepped for your own adventure in one of America’s most charming cities.

Why You Should Consider Not Renting a Car in New Orleans

Why skip the rental car in New Orleans? Well, it turns out that in NOLA, your feet and a few smart transit choices might be all you need. First off, the heart of the city’s charm—the historic French Quarter—is totally pedestrian-friendly, and walking through those lively streets is half the fun.

Parking can be a headache and quite pricey, especially near major attractions and during big events like Mardi Gras. Plus, New Orleans’ public transit system, including its iconic streetcars, covers most of the must-see spots efficiently and affordably. Going car-free not only eases your travel stress and saves you money , but also keeps you right in the thick of the city’s never-ending energy and spontaneity.

So when you are planning your New Orleans travel itinerary, keep in mind that the city’s charm unfolds on foot and through inexpensive public transit, offering a more intimate and engaging experience than you could ever get behind the wheel of a car.

Pros of Having a Car in New Orleans

Here are a few reasons why renting a car might be a good idea when visiting New Orleans:

  • Flexibility : Go anywhere, anytime. Having your own wheels gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and on your own schedule. I hate to feel “stuck” so this is one of the reasons I chose to rent a car.
  • Day Trips : Access to nearby attractions outside city limits, like historic plantations and mysterious swamps, becomes much easier with a car. Or if you wanted to combine a beach visit with your New Orleans trip. This was my other reason for renting – I was afraid we’d want to explore beyond the city and a car would be something we needed.
  • Families : Traveling with kids or elderly family members? A car can simplify logistics, making it less stressful to manage naps, snacks, and comfort stops.

If you decide to rent a car in New Orleans, check for the best rates at DiscoverCars .

Cons of Having a Car in New Orleans

While renting a car in New Orleans offers certain perks, it also comes with its fair share of drawbacks:

  • Parking Challenges : Finding a parking spot in the busier parts of the city, especially the French Quarter, can be frustrating and expensive. Many streets have limited parking, and garages often charge premium rates. One of our hotels had valet-only parking at $49/night – this is a BIG extra expense ( I was lucky my status with that hotel waived it)
  • Traffic Congestion : New Orleans has some pretty heavy traffic, particularly during major festivals or events. Navigating crowded streets can add unnecessary stress to your vacation, and driving in a place where you don’t know where you are going is stressful enough!
  • Cost : The cost of renting a car adds up quickly when you consider rental costs, fuel, and parking fees. This can take a significant chunk out of your travel budget, which could be used for more fun activities or dining out in the city.

Opting out of a car rental might just save you a headache and keep a little extra cash in your pocket for enjoying what New Orleans has to offer.

Alternatives to Driving in New Orleans: How to Get Around New Orleans Without a Car

Once I got to know New Orleans, I quickly realized how unnecessary our car rental was. There are plenty of alternatives to driving, and unless we plan a lot of day trips , I won’t bother renting a car next time.

Public Transportation Around New Orleans

The streetcars are not only a great way to get to some of the major tourist spots, but they are fun and can be an attraction themselves. Plus, they are CHEAP – like $3 per day cheap. Almost every local we spoke to ( even our walking tour guide ) gave us the rundown on how awesome the streetcars are, so the locals recommend them too!

After our small bus tour , I had a great feel for how to get around New Orleans on foot and had the layout of the city and French Quarter in my head. At that point, we walked pretty much everywhere . Not only did it enable us to get to most of where we wanted to go, but it also allowed us to really soak up the NOLA vibes. Plus, many of the things we ended up doing were walking tours, so we were on foot anyway!

New Orleans Weekend Itinerary

Visit my Etsy store to get a “done-for-you” weekend itinerary for New Orleans with your teens. All the planning is done for you – just print it out and follow along!

There were two occasions where we took an Uber, and based upon the things we did, if we hadn’t had a car we could have used a rideshare to and from the airport and to brunch one morning. Other than that we could have easily taken the streetcar or walked everywhere we wanted to go.

Insider tip: if you don’t know where exactly to tell your Uber/Lyft driver where you are, walk to the nearest hotel before you schedule your pick-up . It makes it super easy to find your driver.

In New Orleans, there are plenty of fantastic tours you can take, and I’d highly recommend indulging in a few (which is easier to stomach if you’ve saved on a car rental ). Simply by t aking a small bus tour for an overview of the city you’ll get a feel for where you want to go back to and can then either look for a bus tour to take you there or just take a streetcar or ridshare.

Book a fun small bus tour of the city like this one on your first day like we did and it will make the rest of your trip easier!

Tips for Visitors Choosing Not to Rent a Car

If you’re leaning towards exploring New Orleans without the hassle of a car, here are some tips to make your stay smooth and enjoyable. First, consider booking your accommodation in neighborhoods like the French Quarter or the Central Business District (CBD). We stayed in both areas and found walking to where we wanted to go was easy and felt safe.

The Hyatt Centric is located in the French District and makes walking that area a breeze!

To navigate the city efficiently, download the RTA app on your smartphone. It’s a handy tool that provides real-time updates on bus and streetcar routes, helping you plan your travel around the city with ease.

Lastly, while walking is a great way to soak in the local ambiance, always stay alert and stick to well-lit, busy streets, especially at night. Remember to keep your valuables close to your body (as you would in any big city) .

Following these tips can make your car-free trip not only feasible but also thoroughly enjoyable.

My Experience: Do you Need a Car in New Orleans Cost Analysis

To really help you make your decision, I’ll share the cost analysis of our last trip – the exact money we paid with renting a car versus what it would have been without.

COST WITH A CAR: Car rental: $430 (it is REALLY expensive to rent a car in New Orleans); Uber: $32 (one night to Frenchmen Street from the French Quarter and back). Gas: $5 (cause we barely used it!). I didn’t have to pay for parking, but if I had, it would have been another $50. So total spent by having a car: $467

COST WITHOUT A CAR: Had we gone without a car, we would have taken an Uber to the hotel, so about $35 each way, totaling $70. Same Uber for Frenchmen Street: $32. Another Uber for brunch one morning: $30 and a final Uber to take us to the Garden District and back ( or we could have taken the streetcar and saved even more) : $33. Total spent if we hadn’t had a car: $165. That’s over $300 in savings!

The Answer: Do You Need a Rental Car in New Orleans?

And there you have it, a full scoop on whether you really need a car in New Orleans. Going into our Spring Break trip, the decision to rent a car seemed like the best option. But after immersing ourselves in the city, it became clear that for most visitors, a car might just complicate things more than it helps.

From our adventures through the bustling streets to the quiet moments enjoying local cuisine , we learned that New Orleans is best experienced at a slower pace and without the burden of a car.

In retrospect, skipping the car rental on our next trip could save us a bundle and spare the headache of navigating through traffic and hunting for parking. The real charm of New Orleans lies in its walkable districts so you are going to find yourself spending more time walking than driving regardless.

Before you book that rental car, consider how you plan to explore the city. If your itinerary keeps you mainly in the heart of New Orleans and you’re up for a little walking, then you might find, like we did, that a car is something you can easily do without. Save that extra money for an additional plate of crawfish étouffée , a creepy cemetery tour , or a night out on Frenchmen Street—you won’t regret it.

On Saturday night, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce attended a Las Vegas gala to support friend and teammate Patrick Mahomes’ charity.

The 15 and Mahomies Foundation Golf Classic gala included a swanky evening of food and cocktails and an auction, during which Swift sold off Eras Tour tickets for $80,000.

Some photos and videos of Swift and Kelce at the event circulated on social media. One fan posted on X, formerly called Twitter, that the pair were “super adorable” and “down to earth and kind” in the caption of a video .

Auctioneer Harry Santa also shared a selfie with Swift in his Instagram Stories, and in another video , Santa wrote it was Kelce who “convinced” Swift to donate four tickets to her massively popular show.

While making an onstage appearance, the Kansas City Chiefs star referred to Swift as his “significant other” as he shared the surprise donation

“I was just talking to my significant other and uh,” Kelce said. “We might have one other auction item that wasn’t on the docket—has anyone heard of the Eras Tour?”

In another video on X, Swift can be seen sitting with Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, cheering during the auction.

Santa then says, “Who would actually pay hundreds of thousands just to know Taylor Swift is actually cheering you on as you’re winning 4 of her tickets—this is insane! Let’s go!”

Kelce replied, “Let’s go baby!”

In another video , Santa announces the tickets sold for the “insane” $80,000 price tag. All-in-all, it was a very successful evening.

2024 Zurich Classic leaderboard, scores: Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry among leaders after Round 1

Mcilroy and lowry headline a crowded leaderboard as the competition moves to foursomes for friday.

rory-mcilroy-shane-lowry-round-1-2024-zurich-classic-g.jpg

There aren't many firsts left for Rory McIlroy to achieve in his PGA Tour career, but he checked one off the list Thursday at TPC Louisiana. Making his debut appearance in the Zurich Classic, the 34-year-old looked like the seasoned veteran he is alongside Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry. The two fired an 11-under 61 in the four-ball format amid the windy afternoon conditions to sit with the teams of Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard, Aaron Rai and David Lipsky and Ben Kohles and Patton Kizzire atop the leaderboard after Round 1.

While this week marks McIlroy's first attempt at claiming the PGA Tour's annual team event, it also represents his 11th start of the year as he continues to play through some relative early season struggles. McIlroy had no issues in the first round as he drove the ball beautifully, struck towering iron shots and picked apart the par-72 layout in unison with Lowry.

"You know that you sort of need to get off to a good start, and thankfully we did," McIlroy said. "We were 4 under through 4, which was really nice to see, and from there you've got some momentum and you're just trying to keep it going. But for the most part today, we kept both balls in play. We were having two looks basically on every hole at birdie, and that's the way you need to play better ball. Everyone thinks it's maybe a bit more gung ho than that, but as long as you have two balls in play off the tee, two balls on the green, I think you're always going to do pretty well in this format."

The two began their days with four birdies out the gate and tacked on a couple more to turn in 6-under 30. A birdie on No. 10 was followed with a disappointing par on the par-5 11th, but that did nothing to dampen their spirits. McIlroy struck his best iron of the day into the 12th when he feathered an 8 iron against the wind and to tap-in distance.

Lowry picked him up on the very next hole with a birdie of his own to get the team to 9 under and added another on the difficult par-3 14th to get to double digits under par. With four holes remaining, the two appeared likely to overtake the clubhouse lead, but a couple middling pars to go along with one last birdie on the par-5 18th meant there will be four teams sleeping on the lead tonight before the competition transitions to foursomes on Friday.

Let's take a look around the rest of the leaderboard after the first round in Louisiana.

The leaders

T1. Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry, David Lipsky/Aaron Rai, Ryan Brehm/Mark Hubbard, Ben Kohles/Patton Kizzire (-11)

Outside McIlroy and Lowry, the top of the leaderboard is surprising, to say the least. Hubbard has notched a couple top 20s, a top five and has yet to miss a cut this season while Rai has been solid, but the rest of the lot haven't seen the weekend with much consistency. Hubbard's teammate, Brehm, has seven missed cuts in 11 starts. Rai's teammate, Lipsky, has missed eight cuts in 11 starts and is without a top 40. Kizzire has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in nine starts, and Kohles has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in 11 starts. Four-ball can hide deficiencies, but the same cannot be said for foursomes, which will be played Friday and Sunday.

"Just like usual, we ham-and-egged it," Hubbard said. "I don't think either of us were feeling amazing about our games coming into the day, but we just feed off each other really well. We relax each other out there, and best ball is just a fun format. I didn't putt great last week, but he had a lot of holes where he snuggled it up there nice and close for par and it really freed me up. You just kind of get confidence that way, and I think even you watching me make some putts gave you confidence and you poured them in at the end."

Other contenders

T5. Davis Thompson/Andrew Novak, Thomas Detry/Robert MacIntyre, Cameron Champ/MJ Daffue (-10) T8. Sam Stevens/Paul Barjon, Garrick Higgo/Ryan Fox, Luke List/Henrik Norlander, Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith, Zac Blair/Patrick Fishburn, Marc Meissner/Austin Smotherman, Callium Tarren/David Skinns, Keith Mitchell/Joel Dahmen (-9)

Detry and MacIntyre got off to a dream start by playing their first four holes in 4 under. After hitting a lull, the two turned it on and carded six back-nine birdies to shoot 10-under 62. MacIntyre has the team experience from this past fall's Ryder Cup, while Detry has been enjoying a very solid 2024 campaign. The staying power of all these teams on this leaderboard is interesting given the volatility of foursomes, but the two Europeans should be up to the task.

I think it's about leaving each other to it," MacIntyre said regarding Friday's strategy. "We're both good players, both know what we're doing with the golf ball. It's just trusting each other. If I hit a good shot, you hit a good shot. If you hit a bad shot, don't say sorry, you're not meaning to do it. You just keep walking forward and keep trying to hit good shots and committing to them and see where we end up. Can't really do anything about it. It's difficult because you might not hit a 5-foot putt until the 17th hole. It's completely different. All you can do is try your best."

2024 Zurich Classic updated odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry: 13/5
  • Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay: 10-1
  • Aaron Rai/David Lipsky: 15-1
  • Thomas Detry/Robert MacIntyre: 16-1
  • Andrew Novak/David Thompson: 16-1
  • Nick Taylor/Adam Hadwin: 18-1
  • Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith: 18-1
  • Joel Dahmen/Keith Mitchell: 20-1

Let's roll with the 2022 champion at 10-1. Schauffele and Cantlay burned a ton of edges on Thursday but kept themselves in it with a late flurry of birdies. They now transition to foursomes for two of the next three days where they were dominant a year ago. In 2023, the two fired a 9-under 63 in Round 2 and a 6-under 66 in Round 4 in this format. If they card something similar in the mid 60s tomorrow, they should be in business heading into the weekend.
