The 1,200-foot long Icon of the Seas set sail from Florida on May 25 bound for its first stop at Honduras, reports the Royal Caribbean Blog . However, just a day after departing U.S. soil, the ship was forced into a dramatic rescue mission after an unnamed passenger fell from one of its decks.

The passenger reportedly plummeted into the Gulf of Mexico, sparking a two-hour rescue mission that involved crews from the ship as well as U.S. Coastguard officers. Rescue boats from the Royal Caribbean-operated cruise liner were quickly deployed to recover the man. As Royal Caribbean Blog reports:

The incident allegedly took place in the morning on Sunday, prompting an immediate rescue mission from the vessel. According to guests onboard Icon of the Seas, a small rescue boat was launched from Icon of the Seas to search for the overboard guest. Guests online stated that Icon of the Seas halted its course for approximately two hours to complete the search and rescue mission. Crew members took swift action while the ship maintained its location for the duration of the rescue mission.

However, while crews were able to recover the man after he fell from the ship and bring him back onboard alive, he reportedly succumbed to his injuries and died as a result of the fall. In a statement shared with Jalopnik, the U.S. Coastguard said:

The Coast Guard assisted in the search for a man who fell overboard the cruise ship Icon of the Seas. The cruise ship deployed one of their rescue boats, located the man and brought him back aboard. He was pronounced deceased. Beyond assisting in the search, the U.S. Coast Guard did not have much involvement in this incident.

Jalopnik has reached out to Royal Caribbean, which operates Icon of the Seas , for a statement about the death onboard its ship.

Royal Caribbean launched Icon of the Seas earlier this year, with the 7,600-passenger ship undertaking its maiden voyage in January. The ship, which is roughly 1,200 feet long and requires a crew of almost 3,000, features a water park onboard, an ice rink onboard and the largest swimming pool aboard any cruise ship.

Why falling off a cruise ship is so deadly

cruise ship jump death

A 35-year-old Australian man who fell overboard on his way back to Brisbane. A Louisiana teen who jumped ship on a dare. A 7-year-old boy who died after falling into the ocean, followed by his mother, who tried to save him.

Overboard incidents on cruise ships are incredibly rare. But when they happen, they usually end in death, experts say.

The Coast Guard said last week it had given up on its search for 30-year-old Jaylen Hill, who went overboard during a four-day Carnival Cruise trip from Florida to the Bahamas. It searched more than 1,300 square miles for him.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the Hill family,” the Coast Guard said on Twitter.

Hill was reported missing by a travel companion hours after he was last seen. Experts say such time gaps between a fall and the start of a search are a big part of why overboard incidents are so deadly.

Even if crew members are immediately aware of the incident, it takes the average ship at least a mile to turn around. The ship usually dispatches life boats and alerts authorities, such as the Coast Guard, which may not be close enough to assist, said Ross Klein, a cruise industry researcher and retired professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland. In many cases, ships are not aware that someone has gone overboard until a travel partner reports them missing, which could be hours or days later.

By then, it’s often too late.

“It’s a huge ocean. Just being found at all would be incredible,” Klein said. “The longer you are out there, whether you’re alive or not, the lower the possibility of being recovered. The vast majority of people are gone forever.”

Even in cases where a fall is noticed immediately, a lot can go wrong.

“The fall itself can kill you, a cruise ship engine can suck you underneath the water, fear and anxiety or intoxication could prevent you from swimming — there’s many different scenarios,” said Brett Rivkind, a Miami lawyer who specializes in maritime law and represents families in overboard cases. A person can also become unconscious from hypothermia in as little as 15 minutes , depending on sea temperatures.

At least 386 people were reported to have gone overboard, voluntarily or by accident, from 2000 to 2020, according to data Klein compiled. He began tracking overboard cases in 1995 using media reports, tips, information requests and other methods, later serving as an expert witness before Congress.

“People overboard was an area that hadn’t been studied, and, really, there was no data,” he said. “Even within the industry, they said back in 2012 and 2013 before Congress that they don’t keep track of this.”

While it’s true that tens of millions of people vacation on cruise ships every year without incident, experts say a combination of mitigatable risks and loose safety regulations are contributing to deaths.

In a 2020 study , a professor examined more than 620 cruise deaths from 2000 through the end of 2019. He found that overboard incidents — falling, jumping or being thrown — were the leading cause of death among passengers and crew members, accounting for 23 percent of all deaths.

“It’s a lot more common than people think,” said the professor, Travis Heggie, who tracks tourist deaths around the world at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Death rates for overboard incidents vary significantly among cruise lines, according to Klein’s calculations, which he said proves more can be done to protect passengers.

Only a handful of cruise lines have installed man-overboard systems, which use sensors or other technology to immediately detect when a person has fallen or jumped off the vessel, Klein said. (The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 requires vessels to “integrate technology” for detecting falls overboard “to the extent that such technology is available,” and some operators have argued that existing technology is not reliable enough yet.)

The safest cruise lines were able to rescue only 40 percent of overboard passengers, and most save far fewer, he said. The rescue rate was as low as 6 percent on at least one cruise line.

7 facts about the world's biggest cruise ship

The amount of alcohol being served on cruise ships is also a concern cited by several experts, who said passengers are being overserved. Alcohol is involved in up to 60 percent of overboard cases, according to Klein, and alcoholic drinks have become one of the leading sources of onboard revenue for cruise lines in recent years.

“Cruise lines make a lot of money serving alcohol,” Rivkind said, “and what they’ve done over the years is, they’ve moved to all-you-can-drink policies. They often allow them to drink as many as 15 alcoholic beverages a day. To me, that’s a big source of the problem.”

Defenders of the industry often characterize cruise ships as a microcosm of a city, with the same problems that come up on land. But Heggie and others disagree.

“Nobody is saying 23 percent of hotel client deaths are from falling off balconies,” he said.

Royal Caribbean passenger plunged 90ft to death after 'jumping from running track'

A passenger who died after going overboard from the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas plunged 90 feet to his death after he jumped from the running track on the fifth deck, according to a source

The passenger who leapt from the biggest cruise ship in the world on Sunday dropped a whopping 90 feet to his death after jumping from the running track, according to a source.

On the first day of the week-long journey, the man—who has not been named—leapt from the running track on the fifth deck of Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, a security team member said on Saturday morning as the ship arrived back in Miami . The service member indicated that since each deck is around 20 feet high, the man fell from a height of about 90 feet. They claim staff on board knew what had happened before he even hit the water.

Crew members told the New York Post the man's body was driven in a van to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's Office. At the ports, police also met the ship, obtained statements, and obtained a copy of the CCTV film showing the tragic event. A member of the security team said: "Almost immediately after the man jumped on May 26, the overboard detection system was activated, prompting onboard staff to take action."

"We knew what had happened literally seconds after he hit the water. The protocol is that we’re supposed to immediately make visual contact to see if we can spot him,” the source said, noting that one guard also saw the man jump on a security camera feed.

“It’s the captain’s call whether to stop and turn around, and he did,” he added. The ship's specialized security team got ready to launch a rescue boat to retrieve the individual as soon as the alarm was raised.

According to the crew member, who wished to remain anonymous, the Coast Guard was also informed and promptly dispatched an aircraft to the scene, while the remainder of the security team was positioned at designated lookout points to conduct a 360-degree survey of the surrounding waterways.

The medical staff of the Icon of the Seas was placed on high alert while the possible rescue was ongoing. According to a member of the ship's medical staff, there were paramedics, nurses, former ER doctors, and even a surgeon on board, along with all the life-saving supplies one would expect to find in a tiny hospital. The source went on to say that it's probable the man was dead when he was pulled from the sea.

The crew member stated that after his body was taken to the medical bay, the onboard physician declared him dead. The passenger's body was subsequently kept in the eight-drawer on-board morgue. The medical team member reported that during the week-long journey, which included stops in Honduras, Mexico, and the Bahamas, there were no other deaths on board.

Carnival Cruise Lines' ship Mardi Gras

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a man who jumped overboard from a cruise ship early Saturday as it approached Florida.

The man jumped from the Carnival Cruise Lines ship Mardi Gras just after midnight about 55 miles (89 kilometers) east of Port Canaveral, according to the Coast Guard and Carnival.

The Coast Guard responded with two cutters and an airplane to search for the 43-year-old man. The Mardi Gras and the cruise ship Elation also participated in the search, said Coast Guard spokesman David Micallef.

“The Carnival Care Team is supporting the guest’s family. Mardi Gras,” said Carnival spokesman Matt Lupoli. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the guest and his family.”

Lupoli said the Coast Guard released the ship from the search efforts and it continued to Port Canaveral. It will continue sailing as scheduled.

Man plummets to his death after jumping 90 feet from the world's largest cruise ship

The man jumped from the fifth level of the cruise ship on the first day of the week-long journey..

The male passenger who jumped off the largest cruise ship on Sunday plunged to his death after falling 90 feet and hitting the water. The New York Post reported that the cruise ship's staff knew what transpired before the man hit the water.

The passenger jumped from the fifth level of Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas on the first day of the week-long journey. The report mentioned that each deck on the ship is about 20 feet, which means the man fell approximately 90 feet into the water. The passenger has not yet been identified.

'We knew what had happened literally seconds after he hit the water.'

After the man dropped into the water, the ship was stopped for around two hours so a recovery effort could be completed, according to WFLA . According to crew members, the man was soon transported in a van to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's Office.

The police arrived on the scene and took statements from those who witnessed the tragic event. They also obtained surveillance footage of the incident.

The man jumped from the ship on May 26, which set off the overboard detection system. The onboard staff immediately took action, according to a security team member.

“We knew what had happened literally seconds after he hit the water," one source said. "The protocol is that we’re supposed to immediately make visual contact to see if we can spot him."

“It’s the captain’s call whether to stop and turn around, and he did,” he added.

After the security team was notified of the incident, they prepared a rescue boat and went out to retrieve the man.

The ship includes what is called a Category 6, which Royal Caribbean notes as the "largest waterpark at sea." The ship can hold up to 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members, per WFLA.

Following the incident, a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean issued the following statement: “The ship’s crew immediately notified the U.S. Coast Guard and launched a search and rescue operation. Our Care Team is actively providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

One source indicated that the man was likely not alive when the rescue team pulled him out of the water.

The  20-year-old passenger who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise  last week after an argument with his dad has been identified as a former high school football player and avid hunter living in Florida.

Levion Parker, of North Port, Florida, has been missing since he jumped overboard April 4 in front of his brother and father on the cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

The release of his identity comes shortly after the  Coast Guard called off its search  for Parker.

Social media posts show Parker often went on hunting and fishing trips. He also played football for North Port High School before he graduated in 2022, according to the Daily Mail .

Parker jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas after reportedly getting into an argument with his father.

Parker’s father was “fussing at him for being drunk,”  fellow passenger Bryan Sims told The Post .

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all,” Sims said.

“He was pretty drunk,” Sims added.

Levion Parker has been identified as the 20 year old from Florida who jumped to his death from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. Liberty of the Seas was en route back to Fort Lauderdale after four days at sea when the drunken incident occurred.

Sims hung out with Parker and his brother, Seth, 18, in the hot tub in the early hours of April before going their separate ways around 4 a.m.

After Sims had used the restroom and dried off, he headed toward the elevators.

On his way there, he noticed the two brothers and their dad, Francel Parker, coming out of the sliding doors near the elevators.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess,” Sims said of the moment before Parker jumped.

Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for him with help from the US Coast Guard.

Tropic Supply had invited dozens of contractors to mark the company’s 50th anniversary, according to Daily Mail.

Levion Parker has been identified as the 20 year old from Florida who jumped to his death from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

The Post has reached out to the family for comment.

Nearly 400 people have gone overboard on major cruise lines between 2000 and 2020,  according to the Washington Post .

As many cases are often deadly, many cruise lines have installed surveillance cameras and employed additional safety measures to help reduce risk.

Passenger speaks out on what happened moments before man, 20, ‘jumped off’ cruise ship in front of family

Passenger speaks out on what happened moments before man, 20, ‘jumped off’ cruise ship in front of family

The royal caribbean have provided a statement following the devastating incident.

Kya Buller

A 20-year-old man went overboard on an 18-story cruise ship, sparking a search and rescue mission.

Reports have stated he ‘jumped off’ Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas in front of his family.

The ship was sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas' Grand Inagua Island and the man is said to have jumped around 4:00 am on Thursday (April 4).

Onlookers state that his father and brother looked on ‘helplessly’.

cruise ship jump death

It is hard to imagine what could have possibly led to the unnamed man leaping from the 15-deck ship.

The tragic news has been further confirmed by passengers, who said it appeared to be an ‘impulsive’ and ‘spur of the moment’ decision.

The Royal Caribbean have given a statement, provided to The NY Post, following the incident. They said : "The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

There are a number of passengers who were onboard at the time of the tragedy who have recollected the events.

One man, Bryan Sims, said: "I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30.

"It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time.

“He was pretty drunk.”

Sims then continued: “As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk , I guess.

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now'. And he jumped out the window in front of us all.”

Reflecting on what he witnessed, Sims concluded: "It was insane. It was just surreal.”

A second passenger onboard, Deborah Morrison, added: "There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately.

“ His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

While it is impossible to picture the horror on board the Liberty of the Seas, a third passenger has tried to shed some light. Amy Phelps Fouse said: "The early morning was definitely sombre as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person.

“Royal Caribbean has been excellent at communicating updates throughout the day.

“They have asked that people act with compassion in light of the tragic situation.”

LADbible Group contacted Royal Caribbean and the Coast Guard for comment.

Authorities say the man who recently disappeared from a Carnival cruise ship appeared to have jumped overboard.

Security footage from the Carnival Glory “shows the man jumping off the cruise ship ,” according to a Tuesday night update from the Coast Guard.

The agency has officially identified the missing man as Tyler Barnett of Houma, Louisiana.

A Carnival spokesperson tells PEOPLE that footage appeared to show Barnett jumping from the ship’s Deck 4 around 1:40 a.m. local time on Monday.

“He can be seen climbing on a lifeboat and jumping from there,” the spokesperson said.

Barnett’s mother Elisha Reid told Business Insider that her daughter was previously informed that there was no footage of what happened.

In Carnival's statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson said that on Tuesday, they were "advised of the possibility of him wearing a different shirt, which allowed our security team to change the profile of the guest as we searched onboard video."

"We have informed the U.S. Coast Guard and are providing assistance to the guest’s family that was traveling with him," they added.

Family members previously said Barnett’s passenger card was swiped at the ship’s casino at 12:15 a.m., and his room just before 12:30 a.m., according to CBS affiliate WWL-TV . Carnival crew members began searching for Barnett around 7:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard said watchstanders with its New Orleans sector were alerted to the incident just after 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

So far, crews have searched more than 200 miles of water for the missing passenger, according to the agency. But adverse weather conditions have hampered the search.

"I just want answers, and I'm holding out for hope," Barnett's grandmother Dirlean Tate Mason told NBC News in a story published on Tuesday.

The Coast Guard has since narrowed its search area roughly 30 miles southwest of the Southwest Pass.

Meanwhile, Carnival Cruise Line said its Care Team “is supporting the missing guest's family on board” the ship, which "arrived today to Montego Bay, Jamaica as planned."

On Facebook, Mason said she and her family are in need of prayers as they await answers. “We are holding on to hope and prayer that he will be found safe,” she wrote. "Our hearts are breaking."

Son's final 5 words before jumping to death off cruise ship in argument with dad

A 20-year-old Florida sportsman fell to his death overboard the 11th deck of a Royal Caribbean cruise during a drunken spat with his dad.

Levion Parker, of North Port, Florida was identified by Police in Broward County after he was declared missing when the US Coast Guard could not recover his body in the Bahamas waters. Levion, a football player who graduated high school in 2022, and his brother encountered their dad Francel Parker, on the Liberty of the Seas ship as they got out of a hot tub at around 3.30am.

One fellow passenger, Bryan Sims said “His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess. When we got to them, he said to his dad, 'I'll fix this right now.' And he jumped out the window in front of us all.” Bryan recounted the horrific event to the NY Post : ”'It was literally 8 to 10 feet in front of me. It was one of the sliding windows by the soft serve ice cream machine.

“The ship was moving pretty fast cause it was during the night, and we were traveling a long distance. We were screaming and his dad was calling everyone to stop the ship. I do know from what I've heard it takes about a mile to get the ship stopped and turned around.

“Lots of crew were up top and they started launching the smaller boats to search after we got turned around and back to the area I'm assuming.

Bryan reflected on the evening up until that point, saying the brothers had been chatting in the hot tub just moments before Levion jumped off the deck. He added: “I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3.30am.

“It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time. We chatted about different things, and he told me that he worked on yachts and other types of boats in Florida. I would say around 3.30 to 3.45am him and his brother left the hot tub. I just assumed they were headed to bed. Everyone had left the hot tub by 4am and went their separate ways.

“I got out, went to the restroom, dried off, put my shirt on and was walking from the front of the ship to the back elevators to go down to my room. When I got near the back of the ship on the pool deck I noticed him his brother and dad coming out of the sliding doors there near the elevators. They were walking in my direction and his dad had his arm around him and they were talking."

Levion's father had invited dozens of employees on a trip for his air conditioning business to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary. The boat was 57 miles away from the coast of the Dominican Republic when the alarm was raised, with passenger Deborah Morrison saying the crew were “alerted immediately'” by the “yelling” which erupted, as the man's family appeared “beside themselves.”

The ship was stopped and the search began for Levion, but most of the 4,000 passengers were only told of the events the next morning. One passenger wrote on Reddit: “They announced it over the PA system while we were at breakfast at the entire room went silent. Then the rest of the cruise felt oddly casual.”

One passenger Amy Phelps Fouse said the early morning was “definitely somber”. She added: “So many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person.

Linda Meissner Nuffe wrote: “I was on the ship and when the coast guard arrived and we got under way I couldn't help think how they must be feeling they were leaving their son behind.” Linda believed she was staying in the cabin next door to Levion, and woke to find his room locked and a crew member standing guard outside.

She said: “I saw a person go in that cabin on day one. I thought it was a teen or he could have been 20. My daughter and I were telling him how I sometimes put my deco on other doors the last night to confuse people. He laughed.

“He was quiet and polite, not someone who seemed like a raging alcoholic like the press seems to be saying. We never heard a noise out of that cabin, no partying, no arguing, no slamming doors. I looked over our balcony at theirs after I saw the lock, there was nothing but chairs there.”

Francel told Dailymail.com that the family is consulting lawyers and is planning to issue a statement. A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said: ''The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard. Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.''

Leading Danish actor Trine Dyrholm , who headlined Oscar winner “In a Better World” and Sundance Audience Award winner “Queen of Hearts,” is to star in four-part miniseries “Dependency.”

Maren-Louise Käehne , whose credits include “Queen of Hearts,” “Blackwater” and “The Legacy,” has written the screenplay, which is adapted from the autobiographical novel of the same name by Danish poet and author Tove Ditlevsen.

The miniseries starts on the final day of her life as she tidies up her financial affairs and delivers her last manuscript to her publisher. The events of this day, culminating in her suicide, frame the miniseries.

Ditlevsen was born into a poverty-stricken family, but developed a strong reputation as a writer. She was married four times and became a drug addict, before going into rehab. “She always wanted something more,” Bernth said, “but writing was the love of her life.” In Danish, “Dependency” has the title “Gift,” which translates as both “marriage” and “poison.” “It’s a female story about trying to find your place in life,” Bernth said.

Dorthe Riis Lauridsen, whose credits include Netflix’s “Equinox” and “Baby Fever,” and “Chorus Girls,” is producing “Dependency” for Apple Tree.

The project was previously being developed by Nordisk Film, which is no longer attached.

Dyrholm’s recent credits include “The Girl With the Needle,” which played in competition at this year’s Cannes, and mother-daughter cruise ship rape drama “Birthday Girl.”

Bernth also told Variety that Apple Tree is reteaming with the creative duo behind feelgood period drama “Chorus Girls,” Ditte Hansen and Louise Mieritz.

TV2 is a partner on the show, which will go into production next year.

Bernth said Apple Tree’s Danish-U.S. co-production about a Danish hit man, which was to have been co-produced by ITV Studios America, is on hold. The director was to have been Mikkel Norgaard. The writer is Eric Devlin Taylor.

Bernth also revealed that Apple Tree has a feature film in development, which has been pitched to Netflix, but its core business remains fiction series, she said.

Apple Tree is majority-owned by ITV Studios.
