What are shore excursions?

Shore excursions are available through our partnerships with local suppliers and guides, in the majority of ports we visit. They cover an amazing array of places, landmarks, activities and experiences — from wildlife encounters in the Outback and salsa lessons in Havana to wine-tastings on a French estate and zip-lining in the Costa Rican rainforest. We offer something for every interest, taste and capability level.

How do I book shore excursions?

Choose from city tours, culinary explorations, shopping outings, outdoor expeditions, cultural activities and more. We recommend you book early for the best selection, as our excursions and tours have limited capacity and fill up quickly. Shore excursions may be easily booked online in advance of sailing on the book shore excursions page. If tour details are not yet finalized, please check again closer to your departure date. Shore excursions may be booked and prepaid online up to three days before sailing. Your Digital Tour Tickets will be available under My Account in Navigator. Please download the  Navigator app  prior to boarding. You will also be able to request tours on the ship at the shore excursion Office.

Many tours have limited availability, and booking tours in advance reduces the chance of disappointment. All tour bookings are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Prices are subject to change without notice. Tours are booked and paid with a credit card and a confirmation will be sent to your email address.

If a tour is sold out, many tours offer a waitlist option. If a tour is waitlisted and space becomes available, an email notification will be sent to you at which time you will have 72 hours to book and confirm the tour.  Your credit card will be charged once you have confirmed your tour.

Is there a dedicated resource I can speak with about shore excursions?

The shore excursion reservation office is available to assist you Monday-Friday, 7 AM to 5 PST; Saturday-Sunday, 7 AM to 4 PST. Guests may call 1 (888) 425-9376 to speak directly with an agent.

Is there a customized brochure of shore excursions available for a specific cruise?

To download a voyage specific eBrochure, go to  www.hollandamerica.com  and select Already Booked then Book Shore Excursions. You will be prompted to enter your Email or Mariner ID along with your password. Go to Explore Shore Excursions then select Download Personalized eBrochure.

What is the timing of shore excursions?

Shore excursion departure times coincide with the ship’s schedule as well as other tours, enabling you to take multiple tours if desired with worry-free return to the ship. In the very rare event that your tour is late and the ship must leave, we will arrange at our expense to get you to the next port of call. With independently booked tours, you are responsible for rejoining the ship at the next port of call.

Does Holland America Line offer accessible shore excursions?

Holland America Line is committed to providing safe, easy, and accessible accommodations for all persons with disabilities, to the extent that is feasible. The tours are graded according to their relative level of activity. The activity icons that appear at the beginning of each tour description provide a general idea of the level of activity to expect. It is important to keep in mind that tour operators are subject to the laws of their own country with respect to accommodating the needs of guests with disabilities. In most foreign countries, the laws are not as stringent as those in the United States. We cannot guarantee that all are able to provide facilities that are accessible to individuals with disabilities and third party shore excursion facilities may not be fully accessible to guests with disabilities. For detailed information on accessibility of shore excursions, we strongly recommend contacting our shore excursions reservations department well in advance of embarkation at 1-888-425-9376 (or locally at 206-626-7320). Once onboard, please visit the shore excursions office.

What is Explorations Central?

Explorations Central (EXC™) is a one-stop, multi-faceted program that combines indispensable travel resources and on-board enrichment opportunities, making your time ashore more engaging, vivid and meaningful. The program —including our EXC Guides, shore excursions staff and other resources— is located in the Crow’s Nest (on some ships) or another specially designated place.

What are the cancellation policies for shore excursions?

Cancellations for pre-paid tours are allowed up to 3 days prior to cruise embarkation and will be refunded to the credit card used for the purchase. If within 3 days of embarkation, all changes/cancellations must be done onboard the ship and refunds will be applied to your onboard account. If the credit is not fully utilized during the cruise, the balance will be paid to that passenger by the ship's Purser at the end of the voyage. If cancellation occurs onboard after the cancellation deadline for specific shore excursions, a 100% cancellation fee will apply. The ship's shore excursions office will be able to advise you of the cancellation deadline applicable to each tour. Optional shore excursions during the land portion of a Land & Sea Journey are non-refundable within 3 days of your Land & Sea Journey departure date. Group shore excursions cancelled within three days prior to embarkation (sail) date are nonrefundable. Custom tours may have different cancellation deadlines which will be stated in the proposal. In the rare instance that tours are cancelled by Holland America Line or the tour operator, the full amount will be refunded within four to six weeks after the voyage ends.

Don't skip the destination research

Cruise line shore excursions try to cover the most popular sights and attractions in a destination, but your ship might not offer a tour to every interesting spot in or near the port. If you don't do your own destination research and only make your tour decisions based on what the cruise line is offering, you might miss out on an activity you'd enjoy more.

Take the time to do some independent sleuthing for each port on your itinerary before deciding how to spend your limited, precious time ashore. Perhaps you'd prefer a local hike you can do on your own, a religious site that's especially meaningful to you, or an attraction or tour that relates to one of your specific hobbies or interests.

Can you tell the difference between an overcrowded tourist trap and a fabulous site from the shore excursion description? I can't, and neither can anyone else. The marketing copy is designed to sell the tour.

Read what other travelers have to say about a specific excursion or attraction before plunking down your money and signing up for that tour. You don't even need to seek out a third-party site. Some cruise lines have shore excursion reviews right on their websites.

Don't gloss over the fine print

Cruise lines provide a lot of details about a shore excursion, from how long it lasts to how much physical activity is involved and how you'll be exploring. Yet so many cruisers don't bother to read the full description or the fine print. If you skip this step, you won't realize that the bus tour only passes by, rather than stops at, a famous cathedral or museum. Or, you might miss a note explaining that there's no free time or food included.

I went on a tour in Cagliari, Sardinia, sold as a long morning of walking on cobblestoned streets. One elderly passenger, struggling and out of breath, turned to me and said, "I had no idea this tour would involve so much walking!" I had to bite my tongue. Who would have guessed that about a tour called "Exploring Cagliari On Foot?"

Don't neglect the independent option

Cruise line tours are convenient, but they're not always the most customizable or economical options. If you're traveling as a family or with a group of friends, you might be better off hiring your own guide for the day. Not only could it be less expensive than five or six shore excursion tickets, but you'll also be able to create a tour based on your interests.

Even couples traveling alone might find more affordable group tours offered by independent operators or tour options not offered by the cruise line. Online message boards and Facebook groups can be great resources for finding other travelers on your cruise ship interested in joining you on a private tour.

Don't book your excursions too late

Not all shore excursions are large group bus tours with multiple departures. Boat trips and cycling tours might have caps on the number of participants, and some tour times are more popular than others. In some ports, cruise lines might arrange a special experience — such as Cognac blending or pasta making — that is meant for a small group.

If you have your heart set on a particular tour, don't assume it will have space available if you wait to book until you board your cruise ship. Look over the shore excursion options in advance, and be ready to reserve your spot online as soon as they open for booking. If not, you risk losing out on the opportunity to have that cool once-in-a-lifetime experience, such as salmon fishing in Alaska or wagyu sampling in Japan.

Don't ignore your personal limitations

Easily carsick? Hawaii's winding Road to Hana is not for you. Not physically fit? Skip the hiking and biking tours, no matter how fun they sound. Usually the first to get seasick? A catamaran ride is the wrong choice.

Don't let the romance of a tour description convince you to overlook your physical limitations. Overdo it, and you'll waste a vacation day feeling miserable — or, worse, end up with an injury. No beautiful waterfall or ancient ruin is worth that.

Don't assume you need an organized tour

Don't feel compelled to take a tour just because one is offered. Plenty of ports don't require a shore excursion. Some — like St. Tropez or Mykonos — are truly lovely places to wander, get lost in the shop-lined streets and end up at an alfresco restaurant for a long, wine-soaked lunch.

Just be sure to read up on the area around the dock so that you know whether you'll be pulling right up to the center of the action or if sightseeing on your own requires a shuttle or a cab. Grab a tourist map, or use a map app on your phone so you don't get lost.

Don't go-go-go all day, every day

In a misguided attempt to maximize their vacation time, some cruise travelers make a point to book all-day tours on every port day, exhausting themselves with endless sightseeing or active endeavors in the hot Caribbean sun. Especially on port-intensive itineraries, this can lead to excursion burnout.

Your best vacation is made up of activities that make you happy. When you're in the sun-drenched Caribbean , it's perfectly OK to skip the waterfall hike or the visit to a rum distillery and book a resort pass to spend the day on a cushy lounge chair by a quiet pool, frozen drink in hand.

Don't cancel at the last minute

Most cruise lines allow you to cancel your shore excursion plans with a certain amount of notice. You can take advantage of that flexibility by booking tours early to reserve a spot and canceling if you find a more interesting private tour or decide that you'd rather have a day to wander on your own.

If you don't want to forfeit the price of the tour, however, you need to cancel in advance, usually one or two days before that port of call. If you contact the shore excursion desk that morning to say you're not feeling well and want to skip out, you'll still get charged on your final cruise bill.

Don't be penny-wise and pound-foolish

If you came all this way on a cruise to see the local sights, don't let the cost of exploring limit that experience. Staying on the ship — or wandering the sometimes-sad area right by a port — is no way to get good value from your cruise vacation.

Budget wisely for in-port exploration when you plan your sailing so you can experience the attractions and activities that sold you on the destination in the first place. If you have to, skip that massage or cocktail — things you can easily get back home — in order to afford a couple of excursions. After all, who knows when you'll be back in that part of the world again?

Ship-sponsored vs. independent shore excursions on cruises: Which should you book?

O ne of the reasons why we board cruise ships is to experience the world, whether that's island hopping in the Caribbean, animal watching in Alaska or stepping into fairy-tale towns across Europe. But is it better to do your in-port exploration on a ship-sponsored tour booked through the cruise line or independently, either by booking shore excursions on your own with a third-party company or exploring the port without a tour?

There's no right or wrong approach. When I think back to my two favorite tours, one was ship-sponsored (a plant-based cooking class with a Rastafarian in Jamaica through Princess Cruises) and the other (a walking and history tour with a lifelong resident in Havana) was independently booked online. On both, I found what I was looking for — a glimpse into local culture.

Consider the pros and cons of both types of shore excursions as you're sifting through the choices on a cruise line's website. And remember: This isn't an all-or-nothing game. You might choose a ship-sponsored tour in select ports or when traveling with certain people but opt to venture out on your own on other trips or in other destinations.

Ship-sponsored tours: Pros

You'll be back to the ship on time.

Because everyone on the tour is a passenger on your ship, there is no way the ship will leave without your group back on board. Communications between the shore excursion guide and your ship are tight, and if the tour runs late due to traffic or another reason, the ship will wait for your bus to return.

If the ship's itinerary changes, you won't miss the tour

On one visit to Grand Cayman, high winds forced the ship's tender boats to shuttle passengers to a different pier than originally planned. Thankfully, my plans were fluid — take a taxi to Seven Mile Beach — but had I booked an independent tour, I might have missed the scheduled pickup time due to the new arrival location. Guests who booked a ship's tour were simply picked up at the new arrival point.

The same principle holds true for any itinerary changes that cause you to miss a port or arrive later than planned. Ship-sponsored tours either will adjust to accommodate you or issue you a refund. With independent tours, you're at the mercy of that tour operator's cancellation policies.

Changes to the tour can be made while sailing

A ship's cruise shore excursions desk is for booking — and canceling — tours. If the weather looks bad for the day of your bicycling tour or you've had enough beach time and decided you want something different, you can usually cancel your tour within 48 hours for a refund. (Be sure to check the cruise line's policies.)

It's trickier to change your mind when you have to call or email a third-party provider, and that company may have different cancellation policies.

Bottom line: It's easier to cancel tours on board.

You'll optimize a short stay in port

Ship-sponsored tours usually focus on more than one activity. There's often a restaurant or boutique stop, as well as one or two other highlights. If you're a person who likes to check off lots of boxes, this is ideal.

I recently booked an Alaska shore excursion ("Best of Ketchikan: Totems, Wildlife Cruise & Alaska Appetizers") for a visit to Ketchikan through Princess Cruises that satisfies my love for fresh seafood, sailing and local art — all in the span of a few hours.

Tours are vetted by the cruise lines

Sure, you could pop off the ship and flag down a person holding a sign advertising a tour, but how will you have time to check review sites to make sure they're legit? When booking through the ship, you know the tour has been vetted and, more importantly, endorsed.

I would have been hesitant to hop into a small van and trek up a muddy mountain to a stranger's house in Dominica to learn cooking skills if I hadn't booked through Celebrity Cruises . That excursion was an amazing glimpse into local culture that was made possible by a ship-sponsored tour.

Ship-sponsored tours: Cons

Ship-sponsored tours might offer less physical activity.

Although hiking and kayaking outings have been added to ship-sponsored shore tour rosters in recent years, these active excursions cater to the average cruiser and not athletes. What's strenuous to you and what's strenuous to the average Holland America traveler might be completely different. If you're a fitness buff or an experienced hiker, biker and/or kayaker, you might be disappointed.

When choosing tours, consult the activity level for terms like "moderate" or "strenuous," and also look for the number of miles walked, kayaked or biked. That said, I brought up the rear on a Scenic Cruises vineyard bicycling tour in Bordeaux, France, due to the ship's surprisingly active seniors. To go at your own pace, rather than the group's, you're better off on your own.

Groups tend to be large

Instead of a more personalized experience, passengers on some ship-sponsored tours are packed onto motorcoaches with little or no opportunity to engage the guide if they aren't sitting in the first few rows. If possible, look for a tour with a limited number of spots, especially if you'll be walking, so you can interact. A tour guide speaking through a microphone to a completely full catamaran or through a VoxBox headset isn't necessarily intimate.

There's a chance they'll sell out

There's a reason you're advised to pick tours early: They book up. Even if you log into your cruise line's website to book tours the second they open up (which could be at midnight), shipmates in more expensive suites or with higher loyalty program status might have snatched up all the spots on the hottest tours.

Independent options can also book up in advance, but you usually have more choices of operators and flexibility on when to book, so you can find something you like.

Cruise ship tours don't venture off the beaten path

A 5,000-passenger ship can hardly offer three tours with 15 people on each, especially when partnering with the island's most eccentric artist or chef. They have to offer tours en masse to attractions used to handling thousands of travelers each day.

When I dock in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, I hail a taxi to Grand Case on the French side and opt out of ship-sponsored tours. That means I'm not one of 50 people still in line for a pain au chocolat at a bakery while the motorcoach driver tells me I have "five more minutes."

Look to the smaller cruise lines for more options for small-group tours, and know that those excursions are likely to be expensive and sell out quickly.

You're likely to pay more for ship-sponsored tours

Speaking of price, ship-sponsored tours are often more expensive than the same tour offered directly through the operator. That's because the cruise line serves as the middleman and inflates the fees so it can take a cut before it pays the tour company.

Independent tours: Pros

Independent tours take smaller groups.

When you sign on to an existing third-party tour, instead of filling up a motorcoach, you will probably be one of fewer than 20 people hopping in a van or spreading out on a bus. Book a private tour for your travel party, and it might be just you and your group.

This small setting allows you to ask a lot of questions and even customize the day's schedule with activities for antsy kids or photo stops at sights of interest. You can slow or quicken the pace and potentially choose what you see.

They're more physically active

A rock-climbing tour probably isn't going to partner with a large cruise ship. People who wish to scale boulders are a small niche of travelers. Even that hike or bike ride offered through the cruise line will be fairly easy. If exerting adrenaline is a must, go off on your own or find a local guide. You can tailor the day's activities to your fitness level and skill and go at your preferred pace.

Independent tours can go to less touristy places

Tour buses stick to the tourist hot spots to accommodate the general interests of first-time visitors. If you've already visited a cruise port before or prefer less-crowded or gimmicky options, you might need to ditch the ship-sponsored tour for a private guide or explore on your own.

Get recommendations from a co-worker, a friend or online travel forums ahead of time. Don't be shy about asking crew members or shop, gallery or restaurant workers for the best conch salad in Nassau in the Bahamas or a locals' beach. You might find yourself gazing out to sea at a family-owned shack by the side of the road while having an amazing local meal or enjoying a quiet strip of sand while your shipmates are herded around in tour buses.

Private cruise excursions cost less or offer more value

As I mentioned earlier, going straight to the tour provider can snag you the same tour your ship is offering for a lower price. Small-group or private tours, on the other hand, tend to be pricier than large-group cruise ship excursions.

However, you'll get better value for your money when you can customize the tour to your preferences or spend more time sightseeing and less time waiting around for other people in your group. If you can get together a group of eight or 10 people, you can split the costs to make a private tour more affordable per person.

Sometimes you don't need a tour

For ports close to a downtown area or the beach, you don't need a tour to enjoy your day. Take a cab to the beach, window shop in town or grab lunch at a local eatery. All you need is a map and some cash.

After lunch on the beach in Bridgetown, Barbados, I took a short taxi downtown, stopped in the locals' version of a dime store and strolled through a farmer's market. I didn't need a guide for that, and I was happy to get away from the tour bus hordes for a few hours.

Independent tours: Cons

You might be out of luck if your itinerary changes.

Ship tours will accommodate schedule changes, but that's not always the case with private excursions.

The tour operator might not know that your ship had to head back to its departure port due to a medical emergency or that it changed its docking location or time. It might deem you a no-show and charge your credit card for the tour you missed. Even if you do manage to get in touch, your guide's cancellation policy might not allow last-minute refunds.

Most tour operators catering to cruisers understand that weather patterns can change your ship's itinerary, causing you to arrive on a different day or skip the port completely. Often, their cancellation policies cover these itinerary changes — especially if it's a group tour, rather than a private guide. However, there might not be room to accommodate you on a popular tour on the revised date or arrival.

Bottom line: Ship tours will always accommodate itinerary changes; independent tours don't always.

Unexpected problems can make you miss the ship

Most tour guides catering to cruise passengers are conscientious about getting passengers back to the ship on time, but a traffic jam, bad weather or a medical emergency can derail even the best-laid plans. If a private tour takes longer than projected, the ship likely won't wait, and you could be faced with making your own arrangements to meet back up with the ship or return home.

Independent travel can stress you out

While I love straying from the port and getting away from the hustle and bustle, independent travel can stress me out. On my own, I constantly check the time or fret that the taxi will get a flat tire and I'll miss the ship.

Some people worry when navigating a foreign language without a guide to help translate. Others are concerned about getting lost in an unfamiliar city or fear they're missing out on the cultural and historical context if they can't read signs in another language.

If independent exploration makes you anxious, by all means, sign up for that guided tour. Even if you see less, you'll be happier about the sites you do experience.

You need to do your research

If you walk off the ship and sign up for a tour with the first company you see, you could end up on a dud of a tour because you don't know a thing about the provider or, worse, find yourself in an unsafe situation. Whether you book your guide in advance or make a last-minute game plan on the pier, you are on the hook to do your homework, look up reviews and make sure the provider is legit.

My independent cruise excursion in Havana was memorable because I did the research and booked a guide who earned top ratings on TripAdvisor. But some folks end up disappointed because they book with an unknown company only for the excursion to not live up to their expectations.

This New Cruise Lets You Spend the Rest of Your Life on a Ship

Villa Vie Residence’s new “Endless Horizons” program offers unlimited cruises.

Want to spend the rest of your life on a cruise ship? It may sound like a fantasy, but a new residential cruise line is making this dream a reality.

For a one-time fee, travelers can enjoy unlimited lifetime cruises through Villa Vie Residence’s new “ Endless Horizons ” program. For $299,999 for a solo cabin or $499,999 for a double, travelers can live out the rest of their days in comfort while sailing around the world .

“This is more than just a travel opportunity, it's a new way of life,” Mikael Petterson, chief executive officer of Villa Vie Residences, said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure . “For less than the price of an average home, you can secure a lifetime of experiences."

This summer, Villa Vie Residences is slated to launch a perpetual world cruise that will circumnavigate the globe every 3.5 years. During that time, the cruise will visit all seven continents, with stops scheduled at more than 425 ports in 147 countries.

Through the “Endless Horizons” program, travelers get guaranteed access to a cabin with an ocean view aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey , a recently refurbished ship that can accommodate up to 924 guests. The one-time fee also includes high-speed Starlink internet service, meals and snacks, select shore excursions, laundry, and access to the ship’s pool and fitness center, among other perks.

Guests can stay on the ship for as long as they’d like. But they can also hop off for extended periods, so long as they give 30 days' notice before rejoining the sailing. And they can invite friends and family to join them for $129 per day.

There’s no age requirement for the package, though the company expects “Endless Horizons” to be particularly appealing to retirees.

"One aspect most people nearing retirement age are concerned about is ongoing living expenses and the possibility of outliving their savings," Kathy Villalba, Villa Vie Residences’ chief operating officer, said in a statement. "This program eliminates that concern altogether while offering the ultimate dream: exploring every corner of the world by sea."

If you’re not quite ready to commit to a lifetime of cruising , Villa Vie Residences also offers pay-as-you-go segments that range from 35 to 120 days long—for instance, you could join a 69-day journey from Sydney to Bali or a 51-day voyage through India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia.

Not every traveler is made for an expedition cruise . However, those who are looking for a connection with nature and aren’t afraid of a little discomfort could find themselves at the most extreme locations in the globe.

But what if you landed in the Arctic Circle on a whim?

Thankfully, long-time friend Victoria Dixon was there with the idea to cross eight time zones from Melbourne, Australia, to embark on Aurora Expeditions ’ Sylvia Earle for an Arctic exploration. 

“The idea presented itself, so why not,” MacKay told USA TODAY. 

Nature can make you feel small. You should seek that feeling when traveling.

Expedition cruising is one of the fastest-growing segments in the cruise industry. It's one of the few vacations where passengers can experience pristine wilderness face-to-face. According to an Aurora Expeditions spokesperson, the line estimates that by December 2025, "we will have tripled our capacity since 2019 with our three purpose-built ships."

"We know that consumers are increasingly conscious about spending money with companies they know are operating ethically and sustainably, and this is also true for those they choose to travel with," a spokesperson for the line told USA TODAY.

For many of the 58 passengers, boarding the Sylvia Earle was purposeful and intentional. 

“I saw a YouTuber do this exact trip, and I knew I had to do it,” Patricia Spiekermann, a photography enthusiast from Frankfurt, Germany, said. 

How are expedition itineraries created?

Aurora Expeditions product teams work two to three years in advance to design their programs, "with considerations including the popularity of destinations/voyages, market trends, scheduling logistics, port availability and more," the spokesperson said.

Onboard Expedition Manager (and locker room DJ) Samantha Deer added that product teams will also rely on local guides for suggestions and insights into a new area.

While many of the passengers were content with the breathtaking views – which some described as “otherwordly” – quite a few had to adjust their expectations. 

Throughout our Arctic expedition, the group was able to watch Arctic foxes, reindeer, seals, walruses, puffins, and even a pair of humpback whales, but not the emblematic polar bear. A testament that nothing is guaranteed in the outdoors. 

The crew, however, was incredibly diligent in scoping out locations and ensuring passengers had every opportunity to spot as much wildlife as they could. 

“I think that what we're trying to do is we're trying to instill a sense of privilege,” Expedition Leader Howard Whelan told USA TODAY. “You know, what a privilege it is to see these places and, for the most part, (passengers) look after it.”

What can passengers expect from an expedition cruise?

“Goood morning, passengers!” All passengers were treated to Whelan’s cheery wake-up calls every day of the voyage with a quick rundown of what to expect that day. 

Travelers need to be ready to adjust and follow a schedule that’s subject to continuous changes. 

“I'm looking at the ice charts right now, and our second excursion in Svalbard is at a place called Samarinbreen, which is (an expedition on a) Zodiac cruise in front of a glacier, but right now, it looks like there's still fast ice at that end of the fjord,” Whelan explained. “We may either try and make a landing on fast ice, or we may not get in close, in which case I have to come up with an alternative, check around the area and see what's another really fantastic place to go to and I'll make that call. Ultimately, we may be going into a place in the wind direction, which may not be suitable for us to make the landing. So then we'll change that and find a place with a different exposure.”

Of course, if someone wasn’t feeling up for it, they could notify the crew that they would be staying on board. But even for those who ended up on the Sylvia Earle by happenstance, nature forced everyone to bear witness to its splendor.

“We know (passengers) have wonderful trips, but the one thing that most of us love to do is, when we're in the Zodiacs, we love to just turn the engine off and just stop and get everybody in the Zodiac to be quiet for a few minutes. Don't say a thing and just sit there,” Whelan said. “And quite often, at the end of the trip, when we asked people what was the most the most powerful experience that you had, often (people will) say when we sat silently, and we listened to the ice cracking in the glaciers … that was the best thing.”

It is worth noting that the Sylvia Earle is a purpose-built ship. It was made for these expeditions, and as such, amenities on board are fewer than those of an ocean cruise ship. 

In lieu of musical shows, passengers can attend daily lectures on different aspects of what they’re experiencing. Instead of food halls with long operating hours, there is the main dining room where meals are scheduled and a premium restaurant option for an additional cost. And instead of a casino, there’s a daily coin toss to spot wildlife.

“Sometimes (the lectures are a) little too much since we're on vacation,” said Peter Cvek, from Newark, New Jersey, who was on board with his wife Mary. “But I find a lot of it very interesting and very good to know that the people (here) have a lot of knowledge.” 

The purpose is to be outside, as all of the expedition guides made clear with their infectious enthusiasm for the outdoors. 

“This is an opportunity to do something that I would have never thought to do. And it's sitting there right in front of you. So why not take the chance?” Cvek added.

What is a regular day like on an expedition cruise?

No two days are alike – unless you have four consecutive sea days like we did – but on our trip, they all started with a daily rundown before breakfast, getting some time to get our waterproof clothing and hiking gear ready, and then it was off to that day’s adventure. Some days, you could expect to be out until the late afternoon, but in our case, we usually did a morning trek, ate lunch at the ship, and did an early afternoon activity like hiking, kayaking, or Zodiac cruising. Then, it was back on board for a recap of the day, dinner and bedtime.

Expeditions to the Arctic or Antarctica do attract travelers looking to cross a destination off their bucket list, or as Whelan said, those "who make a place a goal rather than a place to experience."

“I think, for me, the most important thing is that people connect in a deeply personal way with these remote, wild places because I think that it feeds the soul,” Whelan said. “We do offer all of these activities and some people get caught up with thinking, ' Oh well, that's so exciting if we go kayaking or if we go skiing or whatever. ' And it's true, it is. But what's really wonderful about that is it puts you in contact with a different way of experiencing the place that we go to and I think that's the beauty of Aurora.”

The trips themselves are a financial commitment, with most Arctic expeditions starting at over $8,000 per person . Aurora Expeditions does not charge a single supplement on select voyages.

"Though our predominant demographic is still in the over 50s-60s, we are seeing that some voyages are skewing younger, depending on the destination and the activities and experiences offered," the spokesperson said. "There is certainly a subset of older millennial travelers who are adventurous and able to afford more premium experiences like an expedition to Antarctica or the Arctic, and they are attracted to our more informal and relaxed approach to expedition cruising."

Aurora Expeditions does have ADA-accessible cabins, but it's important for passengers to carefully review the itinerary and assess accommodations as soon as possible. Also, keep in mind that many of the ports will require Zodiac transportation to shore.

Both MacKay and Spiekermann, who embarked on the Sylvia Earle by opposite paths, said they enjoyed their holiday. The same goes for every passenger USA TODAY spoke to onboard – even those who got seasick.
