6 Best Christmas family cruises

If you’re looking for a holiday break getaway which provides quality family time as well as value, consider picking a Christmas cruise for your family vacation. Baby, it’s not cold outside, as these warm-weather vacations are especially nice because sailing over Christmas break means December calendars match and your children and grandchildren won’t miss school.

Cruising is truly perfect for a family vacation: there is onsite childcare for young children, adults can carve out time together and off-ship excursions create wonderful family-bonding experiences. We’ve selected 6 of the best and most festive holiday week cruises to celebrate the holidays and bring in the New Year together.

1. Disney Fantasy

A Christmas cruise at Disney Fantasy

  • What adults will love:

If you wish to spend the holidays at sea this year, it may become your favorite new tradition, especially if you choose Disney Fantasy. There’s no shortage of Christmas fun aboard the ship including decorations, a gorgeous 3-deck tree and holiday-themed events daily. This is a great time to watch your children and grandchildren marvel at the seasonal festivities. There is ample time to spend with your spouse too. This gorgeous ship boasts two adult-only restaurants, an adult-only pool and couple massages at the lavish spa.

  • What kids will love:

Disney is a trailblazer for family cruising, and the holidays are a time when this amazing cruise line really shines. Special events include Mickey’s Tree-Lighting Magic, where Mickey and his famous friends lead carols and turn on the lights of the gorgeous Christmas tree in the atrium. Your kids will also love Santa’s Winter Wonderland Ball , a welcome party honoring Santa and Mrs. Claus, with cheery music and of course snow! Another young cruiser favorite is the trademark Deck the Deck Holiday Party , a celebration where Disney friends limbo under huge candy canes and dance to the “Yuletide Slide”.

2. Disney Dream

Kids singing along with carolers at Disney Dream

At Disney Dream adults can relax at the Quiet Cove Pool, an adult-only place where you can swim, soak in the whirlpool spas and bask in the glorious sun. Another place where kids aren’t allowed is Remy, an elegant French dining experience often chosen to mark a special anniversary. Adults can also opt for Palo, a northern Italian-themed restaurant. After dinner, dance the night away in the 18+ nightclub where your older grandchildren can tell you about the latest music trends. Disney Cruise Line also offers itineraries that feature adults-only excursions.

There are holiday activities for the entire family like building gingerbread houses, meeting Santa Claus and singing along with carolers. Plus, special activities just for kids include making holiday cards and decorating stockings and cookies. Make sure your kids don’t miss “Story Time with Mrs. Claus” , an enchanting experience as she reads Christmas stories from a rocking chair near the decorated tree.

Sometimes travel days can be tough, but make sure your children stay up the first night as Mickey, Minnie and all the characters strut out in their festive attire and light up the tree. The entire ship is decorated with wreaths and garland so young cruisers will know Christmas is here! Get to the atrium early as it gets very crowded and very snowy.

If your cruise includes Disney’s private island Castaway Cay, the celebration continues with “snow flurries,” a Christmas tree, Disney characters meet-and-greets and festive music.

3. Harmony of the Seas

Christmas at Harmony of the Seas

Dashing through the seas traveling on this amazing ship will be a gift for everyone in your family.  There are fantastic kid’s clubs that entertain and supervise children all day and night so adults can enjoy well-earned vacation time. One idea for adults is the Vitality Spa, which has dedicated couples suites. Another place which is child-free is the Solarium, where there is an adults-only swimming pool and whirlpools. For a special dinner, consider a late reservation at Chops Grille, Royal Caribbean’s signature steakhouse, located in Central Park.

This ship is known for the thrilling Ultimate Abyss , a slide that takes thrill-seekers 150 feet above sea level. Other brave cruisers can surf on two FlowRider simulators or slide down multi-story water slides. During the holiday sailings, young cruisers can see special appearances by Santa’s elves, and partake in gingerbread-cookie decorating, family story time and much more. The ship will also host tree and menorah-lighting ceremonies, and the entire ship is transformed into a winter wonderland. While on board, look for the Holly Jolly Holiday Parade, festive photo opportunities, caroling, holiday movie screenings, and holiday craft-making for all ages.

4. Norwegian Encore

Amazing aqua park at Norwegian Encore

Newest to Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet, pick Norwegian Encore and start a new holiday tradition for your family. Enjoy the tons of holiday activities like a Broadway show, an elegant dinner in the classic main dining room, or try one of the ship’s signature dining experiences. While the children are enjoying their own activities, carve out your own special time for an indulging day at Mandara Spa.

Norwegian Encore will debut Onda by Scarpetta , which marks the Italian restaurant’s first venture at sea. Onda, which is Italian for “wave,” boasts house-made pasta and seafood dishes. The highlight is Scarpetta’s famous Spaghetti Tomato and Basil, their goal is to provide guests with an authentic dolce vita experience.

When the kids aren’t marveling at the decorated tree, enjoying special meals and attending holiday happenings, they can enjoy all the fun this cruise line is known to highlight. Norwegian is adding more thrills with Encore, which has the largest race track at sea. It’s now over 1,100 feet of pedal-to-the-metal action. There’s also laser tag which guests can play day or night under the open sky. Your family will also love the aqua park where brave cruisers can ascend slides that reach 11 feet off the side of the ship and a breathtaking double loop. Plus, the multi-story Aqua Racer is made for dare-devil fun.

5. Pride of America

Great cruise activities in Hawaii cruise

Norwegian Cruise Line offers the only cruise ship sailing to four Hawaiian Islands during its seven-day, year-round itinerary, where you experience Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai — with two overnight stays designed to maximize your time in paradise. This is an ideal time to extend your cruise vacation in Hawaii by adding on a pre- or post-cruise stay. During Christmas, the magic of the holiday will fill the air on the ship with joyful décor including poinsettias, Christmas trees, twinkling lights and beautiful seasonal decorations. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, crew members treat guests to carols and children will be greeted by Santa. Guests will also enjoy a specialty dinner menu and delicious goodies including specialty holiday cookies, yule logs, pumpkin pie and much more. Don’t forget to bring your camera to take snapshots of a Gingerbread House and Holiday Village that will be displayed in the ship’s atrium.

I sailed this itinerary with my family and it is one of my all-time favorite ships. Pride of America cruises sail year-round from Honolulu, Oahu on a seven-day inter-island cruise with nearly 100 hours in port giving your children ample time to experience Hawaii. A special treat is the Kilohana Manor House & Kalamaku Show excursion, where guests will see torches blaze, hulas and energetic fire dances. December sailings are great picks for those who would enjoy a longer vacation during the holidays. Lastly, consider planning pre-cruise tours in Honolulu, Oahu to experience the Polynesian Culture Center & Kualoa Ranch, meander through the surfing town of Haleiwa and learn about history and honor lives lost at Pearl Harbor’s USS Arizona Memorial.

6. Carnival Panorama

Stunning Christmas decoration at Carnival Panorama

What’s especially nice about Carnival Panorama is that the ship is “decked out” in holiday splendor. The ship’s grand atrium is decorated like a Christmas Wonderland, and there are many opportunities for professional photographers to capture photos of the entire family in their holiday outfits.  While your children are having a blast in their supervised children’s clubs, parents can take in amazing Playlist Productions shows, check out the cool Alchemy Bar or make plans to enjoy great dining spots like Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, Cucina del Capitano and Ji Ji Asian Kitchen. For daytime relaxation, head to Serenity, an adult-only retreat.

If there are adventure-seekers in your family, the first-ever Sky Zone® at sea makes Carnival Panorama a winner with this indoor trampoline park and challenge zone. Here the kids play gravity-defying dodgeball or slam-dunk basketball.

The holidays are what really sparkle aboard Carnival Panorama as there’s a massive Christmas tree equipped with customized lighting and synchronized music. There are also strolling carolers, holiday music incorporated into the live entertainment plus “snowfalls” in the atrium. There’s even a special holiday show with performances by children from Camp Ocean, and appearances by Santa Claus and The Grinch, as part of the line’s fleet-wide Seuss at Sea program.

Taking a cruise with your family over the winter holidays is really something special. I am lucky that I have done this with my family the last few years.  A warm cruise escape from school and work is something my family continues to look forward to every December.

Why you should go on a Christmas cruise with Princess Cruises – from gingerbread house making to meeting Santa

Author: Lucy Abbott

Published on: 15 November 2022

Princess Cruises celebrates any special occasion in style – especially Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Expect copious amounts of tinsel and festive cheer, all washed down with a glass of eggnog, of course.

Can’t face cooking this Christmas dinner this year? Or can’t you bear to see the cat knock the Christmas tree over again? Either way, Christmas should be full of food, presents and joy with zero stress.

Wave goodbye to Christmas panic with Princess Cruises , who offer a range of Christmas and New Year’s Eve cruises packed with nothing but festive cheer.

Drift around your Princess Cruises vessel , jolly on Christmas spirit (and eggnog) and pick and choose which festive activities appeal to you onboard – from the Christmas tree lighting ceremony to an ugly jumper competition.

If this sounds like your ideal Christmas, then look no further than Princess Cruises – read on to discover how the line makes your Christmas extra special.

Princess Cruises unveils captains for Star Princess

Star on board: tim peake, amazing new onboard excitement with princess cruises – british style, princess cruises’ reveals name of second sphere-class ship, princess cruises offers £1 deposits as part of its coronation celebrations, princess cruises reveals coronation celebration details onboard uk-based ships, princess cruises announces 2024 alaska season, win a seven-night 'comedy stars' scandinavian summer cruise with princess cruises - now closed, first look at princess cruises’ new-gen ship sun princess, princess cruises reveals seven new celebrity guest speakers, christmas tree lighting.

Does it get any more festive than watching the warm gold and red lights fill up a room for the first time in the year?

Get in your festive feels with Princess Cruises while watching the magic of the Christmas tree lighting - gather in the Piazza for a ‘lighting of the lights’ event that you’ll never forget.

And you won’t have to wait too long to be dazzled by the bright lights as the lighting takes place on the first evening of each voyage – get out your glitziest dress for this one.

The cherry on top is the live festive music and a choice of hot chocolate, mulled wine or eggnog to sip on that accompanies this festive event.

Another light-filled event is the Hanukkah candle-lighting service, which is a daily service.

Gingerbread house making

Feel like you’re right in an episode of ‘The Great British Bake off’ and get your apron on to construct an impressive (or embarrassingly lacklustre – hey, we don’t judge) gingerbread house.

Team up with your partner or family unit and get creative as you’ll be judged by a range of onboard chefs and maybe even the captain themselves.

The winning team’s gingerbread house will take pride in place near the food and beverage professional display – ensure you snap a victory picture next to your masterpiece.

T’was the night before Christmas

Who doesn’t like a good story? Sit back, relax and keep the kids entertained with a dramatic reading of T’was the night before Christmas, Frosty the Snowman or Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

What’s more, children are encouraged to wear their pyjamas and cosy up on the floor beneath the impressive Christmas tree to create a truly special Christmas eve.

If you are a keen caroller, then you’ll be pleased to know that there is the opportunity to take part in a Christmas carol in The Piazza – snow machine at the ready.

Meet Father Christmas

What’s Christmas without the big man himself, Father Christmas?

Head to the Aft Lounge on Christmas Eve to meet Father Christmas in his big red chair and snap a photo that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Not forgetting the most important thing – presents! There will be a youth gift giveaway to get excited about too.

Children will also be delighted at the possibility of Santa popping into the youth centre throughout the cruise.

Fun activities for all the family

That’s not all the festive fun to be had onboard (believe it or not), Princess Cruises also host a holiday card-making session, an ugly sweater holiday-themed sweater competition and themed trivia.

Additionally, there’s a whole host of film screenings across the festive period – from ‘A Christmas Carol’ to ‘Love Actually’.

Children of all ages are accounted for with a wide range of youth and teen centre activities such as ornament making and colouring sheets for the little ones and cooking decorating for teens.

The main event for the whole family is the Holiday Wishes show. Unique to whichever ship you are sailing on, this show includes countless Christmas songs sung by the talented entertainment crew.

Party into the new year

Three, two, one and happy New Year! Welcome in the New Year like never before the Princess Cruises’ way.

Start the special night off in the Main dining room for a Gala Night Dinner, dressed to the nines of course, and indulge in some delicious food – you might as well make your last meal of the year a good one (calories don’t count on NYE, right?).

Stomachs full and spirit high, you’ll then head to boogie to the live music with a countdown to midnight. When midnight rolls around there will be one big countdown in the form of The Traditional Big Count Down Party with the Cruise Director and Party Band. Alternatively, you can party into the New Year in Rock in the New Year in Club 6 or The Sophisticated Party in the Wheelhouse.

What better way to start the New Year than being surrounded by fellow cruise lovers?

Cruise with Father Christmas

We booked this having seen it advertised, rather than through word of mouth and it was a lovely afternoon! We joined the boat for a 1.5 hour cruise down the river Thames with 'Fred in the Shed' child's entertainer on board before a visit from Father Christmas. The boat is beautiful inside, all shiny polished wood with velvet covered seating - so inviting, warm and comfortable... with lots of lovely Christmas decorations up too. Each adult was given a little bag of mince pies each along with glass for mulled wine (children had a gingerbread and shortcake biscuit with black currant or orange squash drink). There was Fred at the front area of the boat with space for the children to sit and watch/participate - he was funny, enthusiastic and seemed a happy chap ... he seemed to capture the attention of most of the children. He was funny but not smutty, not an easy balance in this age! At the end Father Christmas joined us and went to his grotto (nicely decorated) where children went to see him and a present was given (he was ably assisted by two elves!). This was a first class event, one I'm happy to have discovered and which I will book for next year! Would highly recommend!

Hobbs of Henley Take you to the best of Henley ! They use the best of catering company's and entertainment . You can choose which boat fits your personal party....or you can just join a trip that's already been put on for all to book ...like Christmas party's , or Henley regatta or festival trips . THe staff are outstanding and will look after your every need ! They do charter hire , short river trips ....or you can turn up and hire a small boat and take a leisurely paddle up the river Do it !

Hobbs of Henley operate daily trips down the river at Henley-On Thames at frequent intervals during the Summer season. I was there in October this year, so only two cruises were operating per day due to the season. I chose the 2.30pm departure and it was great - we went on a smaller vessel as there was just a few travellers, but we still got the full commentry etc. The cruise first takes you down to the Marsh Lock, passing many riverfront houses to admire along the way. Back towards the bridge over the river and past the area where the Henley -On Thames Regatta is staged. Many fine waterfront houses and gardens to see along the way. Pass the village of Remenham and view Temple island where the Regatta starts. There is a temple building on the island which is now used mainly for weddings and other events. The cruise turns back just before Hambledon Lock and takes about an hour - a very pleasant way to while away an hour or son at Henley - On Thames and is not expensive. You will see some amazing waterfront homes, gardens - lots of ducks and swans and perhaps even some rowers out on the river! If you are feeling fit and want an adventure, you can also hire a row boat and row yourself along the river - or hire a motorised boat. After the boat trip - take a wander down the riverside - there are lot's of places to stop and rest and also plenty of photographic opportunities along the river walks. Explore both sides of the river - take a walk along to Marsh Lock or wander along the other side of the river - you do have to walk across the bridge for that. You can walk as far as Remenham and have a look at the lovely little village there - it has a nice historic old Church. If you are really keen - walk as far as Marlow!

My wife and I had an hour boat trip up to Henley reach and back. The captain and crew where very friendly and informative. The weather was lovely so we sat on top I would not liked to have been inside on such a day. All in all we thought it was very good value for money and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Took a trip of an hour , which with kids is long enough Departed on time, just us on board, no commentary but the skipper would answer questions Value for money, £9.50 per adult mmmh. Over 65 £7.50, babies free. Great way to show guests Henley from the river

We had tea in the tearoom while we waited for our boat. It was very busy, these boat trips are very popular. On the boat, I stood out on deck for a good part of the journey, by choice, as I found it more exciting there and could hear the commentary better. We saw the large mansions bordering the Thames and some very stylish boats and yachts. The whole sail was very enjoyable.

The Most Magical Santa’s Grottos in Greater Manchester

It isn’t Christmas without paying a visit to Santa. Part of the magic of the festive season is taking your little ones to meet Father Christmas, seeing their faces light up and letting them tell him everything on their Christmas list. Luckily, in the run-up to his busiest time of year the man himself is taking some time out to stop by some Greater Manchester Grottos, so you won’t have to travel too far to find him.

Here are the Santa's Grottos and Father Christmas experiences you can have safely in Manchester this Christmas.

That’s right Santa is test-driving a 757 this Christmas. He’ll be bringing along Mrs Claus and his elves to a festive-filled hangar full of Christmas games, songs and fun including time to write a letter to Santa so he doesn’t forget what kids would like to wake up to on Christmas morning. Santa will be waiting on the aircraft and kids can get photos in the flight deck.

Cruise with Father Christmas on Manchester River Cruises

For another twist on a Grotto, why not join Santa for a cruise on the Manchester Ship Canal and make this Christmas one to remember? This breathtaking voyage features the Kimberley’s Ord River, home to freshwater crocodiles and fruit bats. Step on a zodiac to King George Falls, with its twin 260-foot drop surrounded by soaring ochre rock formations. Additionally, don't miss Hunter River’s thick mangrove system, which shelters rapacious saltwater crocodiles and Indigenous rock art scribed thousands of years ago in Vansittart Bay.

Abercrombie & Kent

In the stark Antarctic Peninsula, younger passengers will get to handle a zodiac tiller (weather permitting) in the shadow of colossal icebergs and gob-smacking glaciers in search of penguins, seals, and whales. Part of the luxury operator’s family program, there will be A&K Young Explorers guides, kids’ activities, such as marine mammal identification—and Father Christmas makes an appearance onboard. After a thrilling day of wildlife spotting, gather to sip velvety hot cocoa in the panorama lounge, soak up pristine views from your spacious suite, and splash in the heated outdoor pool.

Itinerary : Christmas Magic with Renaud Capuçon

Experience : Pack your crew's thermals for this nine-day expedition on Ponant’s exquisite 245-passenger icebreaker, Le Commandant Charcot (minimum age to sail is eight). This parent-pleasing voyage features Ponant’s stellar Kid Explorers Club in partnership with the Maud Fontenoy Foundation, with special appearances by French classical violinist Renaud Capuçon. The LNG-powered (liquefied natural gas) ship departs Helsinki for Stockholm , before zigzagging north to the Narnia-like wilderness of the Gulf of Bothnia. Marvel at starry pitch-black skies from the promenade deck as you sail by snowy peaks toward Lapland’s thick boreal forests. Visit cinnamon-scented Christmas markets in the capital cities and the Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Finland. A highlight is Lulea, Swedish Lapland , where snowmobiling, naturalist-led snowshoeing walks, and ice fishing on a frozen lake are on offer.
