CST Czar 700x28C Dual Compound tyre

The CST Czar 700x28C Dual Compound is a very good tyre for commuting and long training rides, its 285g weight no hindrance and its 60tpi casing boding well for longevity. Grip and cornering prowess has been dependable, even in heavy rain, ditto the puncture-repelling belt, which is all very reassuring given the asking price.

It's also available in a narrower 25mm width, though a 32mm option might broaden the appeal, and some folks may bemoan the lack of tubeless compatibility, but these are very minor grumbles.

The specification is good, especially from a tyre giving change from £30.

Dual compounds promise lower rolling resistance without compromising grip, and I was pleased to discover the EPS (Exceptional Puncture Safety) puncture-repelling belt runs edge to edge. It's described as a tightly woven lightweight 'rubbberised polyfibre', which I am told is a 2mm Kevlar belt.

My descent test revealed a less 'planted' feel compared with more expensive models such as Bontrager's AW3 Hard Case Lites and Vittoria's Rubino Pros.

Wet, or dry, they're easy to coax up to speed, which is reassuring all round but particularly useful around town, where swift getaways and changes of course can be imperative. Holes, absent-minded pedestrians, opening car doors and similar all calmly navigated.

In the wet, inspection covers and similar greasy ironworks required restraint, but no more than usual.

On the open road and down the lanes these characteristics make for an engaging experience. Typical of other 60tpi casings, washboard tarmac and bumpier surfaces are more noticeable than on tyres with a higher thread count, but never harsh.

The casings employ a very faint tread pattern, but in my experience these supply psychological reassurance rather than any performance advantages over a slick.

Puncture resistance & durability

Winter may tell a different story, but in 500 miles of riding I've had no issues, despite deliberately making for shards of glass, not avoiding dung-covered wet lanes, and being intentionally lax when it comes to brushing the casings. As well as no punctures, there are no visible signs of wear.

Value and conclusion

The Czars retail at £29.15, though I've seen them discounted generously online. There are plenty of 60tpi tyres around, but at this end of the market they tend to be a good bit heavier.

I remain very fond of Kenda's Kwick Journey KS Plus tyres , which are surprisingly compliant, hardwearing and reliable. They've gone down to £25 since I reviewed them in 2020 , but at 757g apiece for a 700x32 they're on the portly side.

Specialized's Roadsport (review to come) is only £20, and features a 60tpi casing and puncture-repelling belt, but according to Specialized the 28mm size weighs 420g, presumably due in part to the wire bead.

The Czar isn't quite as good value as Lifeline's Prime Armour Road Tyre , which I reviewed back in 2016 . That also comes in a 28mm version, sports a Kevlar breaker strip and 120tpi casings, and gives change from £20.

I've also been impressed by Vittoria's Rubino Pro Control , another 60tpi model, featuring graphene and a puncture-repelling belt, but they are slightly heavier than the Czar and, at £44.99 each, a good bit dearer, too.

There's a lot to like about the CST Czars, and they're hard to beat when it comes to price – although if you really want to blast along, their Cito stablemates also come in a 28mm width but feature racier 170tpi casings, tip the scales at 240g, and at £33 are only a few quid more.

CST says: "Constructed with a dual-compound rubber, this tyre enables precise cornering and rider feedback in all weather conditions. Add to the construction, the carcass is a strong but supple 60 Treads Per Inch...The Czar tyre is also constructed with EPS puncture protection, to remove the worry of having a ride interrupted by a puncture."

Tell us some more about the technical aspects of the product?

EPS (Exceptional Puncture Safety) technology protection offers an added layer of proprietary rubberised polyfiber material between the tread and the casing. The tight weave of this lightweight, puncture-resistant layer prevents sharp objects from penetrating the casing and damaging the tube.

Dual Compound - Two compounds used within the tread of select tyres to offer lower rolling resistance and increased cornering grip.

Seem well made and decent specification for the money.

Quick, agile, and compliant – especially for a 60tpi tyre. Puncture resistance is proving reassuringly dependable to date.

Too early to comment longer term, but 500 miles in, no undue signs of deterioration.

Surprisingly compliant.

Performance and specification are impressive compared with others at this price.

Overall, I've been very impressed by the CST Czars. They're surprisingly quick, yet have performed very well on wet, greasy roads. Even at higher pressures they're surprisingly compliant. They might be a little narrow for some tastes, but shaping up as a very good fit for winter riding and training.

• CST E-Series Reach

The CST E-Series Reach is an E-bike tire from the world's largest bicycle tire manufacturer. CST (Cheng Shin Tire) is a Taiwanese company with factories in Taiwan and China. There's a big chance you've ridden on CST tires without knowing, a lot of tires from smaller brands are actually rebranded CST tires. They also own the Maxxis brand, which is their high-end brand. The CST branded tires are marketed as the more value-oriented tires.

The E-Series Reach comes with a 22 TPI carcass, single compound rubber, ECE-R75 certification (up to 50 km/h), and the CST APL technology. The APL system is basically a 1 mm thick layer of rubber that is harder to penetrate. Although 1 mm is better than nothing, there are also tires on the market that come with 3 - 5 mm thick AP layers. Maybe this layer is extremely hard to penetrate while at the same time keeping rolling resistance at a low level? Let's put this tire on the test bench.

CST E-Series Reach Test Results

Size, Weight, and Thickness Measurements

CST specifies the weight should be close to 715 grams, my sample comes in at 734 grams. On a 17C rim, at an air pressure of 60 psi, the 37-622 E-Series Reach measures 37 mm wide and 34 mm high. It's nice to see a tire actually measure close to its rated size.

The E-Series Reach comes with an almost slick tire profile, there are only some slight grooves at the edge of the tire. I've measured these grooves at 1.1 mm deep. This definitely is less that most other touring tires that come closer to 2 mm tread depth. The total tire thickness at the center of the tire is also quite thin with a thickness of 4.4 mm. The sidewalls do are thick with a measured thickness of 1.8 mm.

Rolling Resistance Test Results

At the maximum rated air pressure of 75 psi, rolling resistance comes in at a low 19.0 watts. This is actually the lowest rolling resistance of all touring tires that have been tested to date. At 75 psi, it outperforms the Schwalbe Marathon ( read review ) by 0.6 watts. At lower air pressures, rolling resistance starts rising much faster than comparable tires. At an air pressure of 60 psi, the Schwalbe Marathon already has a 0.6 watts advantage which increases to 5.6 watts at 30 psi.

Rolling resistance is close to what I expected from the E-Series Reach. It's just unfortunate rolling resistance increases so much at higher air pressures. It's nice to be able to lower air pressure to increase comfort, 60 psi on 37-622 tires already gives quite a bumpy ride.

Puncture Resistance Test Results

While performance in the rolling resistance test is strong, the E-Series Reach performs very poorly in the puncture resistance test. In the tread puncture resistance test, which is the most important measurement, it's the lowest scoring tire to date. It does perform much better in the sidewall test, but I'm sure 90% of real-life punctures are in the tread area.

Puncture Factor Tread also comes in very low because the tread is not only easy to puncture but also very thin. With a score of 44 points, it scores less than half what the Schwalbe Marathon scores (102). Just like the puncture resistance sidewall score, Puncture Factor Sidewall is on the high side as well because the sidewalls are quite thick compared to other tires.

Static Grip Test Results

Rolling resistance at very high air pressures is very good. At lower air pressures, rolling resistance starts rising faster than comparable tires. In the puncture resistance test, the E-Series Reach performs awfully with the lowest tread puncture scores to date. On top of that, it doesn't have much tread depth. We do rate the CST E-Series Reach recommended 3/5 because.. this is Bicycle Rolling Resistance .

There still doesn't seem to be a tire that comes close to the Schwalbe Marathon ( read review ) in both the rolling resistance and puncture resistance departments. The Schwalbe Marathon is still our nr 1 recommended tire for a low rolling resistance and high puncture resistance. On top of that, you also get a decent tread profile and tread depth.

From lights, fenders, kickstand and rear rack to disc brakes, adjustable bars and front suspension for making your already laid back ride just a little more cush, Laguna is, in a word, loaded. This step thru hybrid multispeed e-bike offers a serious 43-mile range for all day riding, and a great power to volts ratio at 350 watts per 36 volt ride assist and throttle for plenty of get up and go. The quintessential e-bike at a great price, Laguna is quite possibly the perfect form of transportation (not to mention a blast to ride). All Hurley bikes have been ACT, CPSC & UL certified; the gold standard in bicycle safety. ASSEMBLY: Your new Hurley Bike will arrive at your door 85% assembled out of the box. What does this mean? You can still put a little sweat equity into building your new ride, but you don't have to start from scratch. Each bike comes with clear directions, but assembly will vary based on your experience. For the skilled bike mechanic, you may be riding your new bike in as soon as 30 minutes or less. For everyone else, plan for about an hour before pedaling away on your new ride. If you don't have the time or the confidence to build your own bike, please take your Hurley to a local bike shop to build it for you.
