The mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado , sits at 9,600 feet and is one of Colorado’s most well-known former Gold Rush mining towns. One of the best things about this ski resort basecamp is its proximity to Colorado’s Front Range, as the Denver to Breckenridge drive tends to take travelers just over an hour and a half to two hours at the most, depending on weather and traffic.

This drive up the Eastern Slope of the Rockies on Interstate 70 is also incredibly scenic and features plenty of chances to make short stops for sightseeing and exploring—some of which are conveniently located right along the highway. The first thing you’ll want to do when planning your Denver to Breckenridge road trip is select a primary route. The most straightforward choice for the least amount of time on the road is to simply take I-70 West out of Denver, which is the only main highway you need to follow on this drive until making an exit at Highway 9 just 10 to 15 minutes before you arrive at Breckenridge.

However, if you really want to make it a longer day of driving and take your time doing some sightseeing, you could opt for taking a scenic route from Denver to Breckenridge on US 285 South.

In this scenario, you would get on Highway 9 at the mountain town of Fairplay and drive up and over the 11,542-foot-high Hoosier Pass before arriving at Breckenridge from the south.

Matthews/winters park.

Located just a stone’s throw outside of downtown Denver, Matthews/Winters Park is a “local’s favorite” sort of area with a nice trail network that stretches out into the tracts of land at the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills.

The famous Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is even accessible for hikers and bikers setting out from Matthews/Winters via a trail loop. If you choose to spend more time downtown, Idaho Springs is a fun place to wander around, visit a few coffee shops, or grab a locally brewed beer. The Frothy Cup is a favorite for coffee and breakfast, and Tommyknocker Brewery & Pub and Westbound & Down Brewing company are excellent taphouses.

Mt Evans Wilderness Area

This is one of the more “off the main drag” things to do between Denver and Breckenridge, as a detour to this area away from I-70 on CO-103 will add about 20 to 30 minutes of additional drive time each way.

But if you choose to make the trip at the right time of the year when the seasonally closed Mt Evans Road is open, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most spectacular views in the country.

If you choose, you can even drive all the way up to parking areas located near the summit of Mt Evans and the turquoise waters of Summit Lake.

Getting out of the car for some hiking in the Mt Evans Wilderness Area is a great idea, even though it’s definitely an option to enjoy the expansive views and altitude from the comfort of your car.

Some wild animals you might spot while hiking and climbing around on this peak include small rodent relatives like pika and marmot, along with above-treeline dwellers such as mountain goats and bighorn sheep.

Alpine lakes are peppered in among the glacial cirques that dominate the surrounding landscapes, and some such as the Chicago Lakes are filled with eager cutthroat trout.

A former silver mining camp located along the beautiful glacial runoff waters of Clear Creek, Georgetown is similar to Idaho Springs in its size and abundance of classic homes done in Victorian style.

Attractions in this town include the Georgetown Loop Railroad, which takes visitors on a round-trip steam train ride between Georgetown and Silver Plume, taking a stroll around the historic district, and hiking nearby trails like Guanella Pass.

A tour of the Capital Prize gold mine is another great option where you’ll be able to see real gold veins that miners would have been searching for and take a walk deep into the mountainside to explore former mining tunnels.

In the spring and summer, Clear Creek Canyon, with its waters that run up and down much of the I-70 corridor, is a top-class destination for all kinds of outdoor watersports recreation. The 13,176-foot Kelso Mountain looms overhead by the trailhead, and dogs are allowed on this trail as long as they’re kept on a leash. Even more casual hikers might enjoy doing just a short 2-mile round trip hike here on their way to Breckenridge as a break from the car to get some fresh air.

If you’re planning for a longer day hike, keep in mind that most lower-clearance vehicles like vans or sedans won’t be able to clear the Stevens Gulch Road that leads right to the trailhead. The alternative is to park down at the dirt parking area along Bakerville Road and hike to the trailhead.

Even walking part or all of this additional 3 miles or so is worthwhile, as you’re always steeply gaining elevation here through the alpine basin. Birdwatchers and those seeking to see wildlife should bring their binoculars, as the Arapaho National Forest offers abundant chances to see wild animals.

Keep in mind that if you’re hiking in this area between roughly October to March, you’ll want to have traction equipment and even poles and/or an ice axe if you’re planning to summit a peak.

The resort town of Keystone is a stop that’s akin to Vail and other renowned Rocky Mountain ski areas. The main part of Keystone is full of high-end retail shops, gourmet restaurants and bars, and all sorts of lodging options.

When it comes to the ski mountain itself, Keystone Ski Resort basically encompasses three separate mountains—Dercum Mountain, North Peak, and the Outback—that are chock full of terrain options and five separate bowls.

If you’re passing through in the summertime and skiing isn’t an option, Keystone has plenty of other options for outdoor recreation, or if you’re simply exploring the town you can stop through a local eatery for happy hour.

Some possible spring/summer/fall activities in Keystone include a horseback riding trip with Keystone Stables, a visit to the Keystone Spa, or a mountain biking session on any of the numerous local trails.

Silverthorne/Dillon Reservoir

Likely to be one of your last stops on the scenic drive from Denver to Breckenridge, Silverthorne serves as a gateway to Colorado’s Western Slope after motorists have descended from the Eisenhower Tunnel and its traverse through the Continental Divide.

The Blue River flows into and out of Lake Dillon here, and both this river and reservoir are ideal for a wide array of mountain sports. Paddleboarding and sailing are common on Lake Dillon in the summertime, and there’s great ice fishing on the lake in winter and year-round fly fishing in the tailwater section of the Blue River.

The town of Silverthorne itself is also a great option for lunch or dinner if you’re feeling too hungry to wait for Breckenridge after driving up and over the Divide. Some local favorite restaurants include Murphy’s Irish Pub (unbeatable fish and chips), Sunshine Café, and the Blue Moon Bakery.

Frisco is a convenient last stop thanks to its location just off I-70 right along your route south on Highway 9, though you can also get off the highway one exit to the west to access Frisco’s Main Street.

Of all the mountain towns in the area, the main strip of shops, restaurants, and other businesses here has somewhat of a newer ambiance. Everything in Frisco is also very well laid-out along the primary drainage of Tenmile Creek.

Frisco’s western edge is also dotted with easily accessible trailheads and arguably Summit County’s best-paved recreation trail in the Tenmile Rec Path/Temple Trail.

Notable hiking routes that are located near this paved trail include the Rainbow Lake and Miners Creek trailheads, and the popular Frisco Adventure Park is just beyond Highway 9 where the town borders on the far corner of Dillon Reservoir.

The old silver mining town of Breckenridge is now one of the best ski resorts in Colorado and easily accessible from major Colorado cities like Denver and Colorado Springs, which are both under a two-hour drive. There are a number of ways to get between Denver and Breckenridge, which is located 80 highway miles away via I-70 and Highway 9.

Denver International Airport is the main air travel entrance point for Breckenridge. There is a small regional airport in Eagle County, which is west of Vail, but the drive is not much shorter than from Denver, and the flights in and out are generally less direct and more expensive. As such, it is best to go by land from the Mile High City to "Breck," as locals call this mountain town.

You can either rent a car and drive yourself between the two destinations, or you can allow someone else to do the driving and get there via public bus transport or with a group shuttle or a private luxury SUV service . You can even join an organized tour .

1. From Denver to Breckenridge by Organized Tour

If you don't have time to stay overnight in Breckenridge - maybe you are in Denver for business and have an extra day to explore before flying out - then consider an organized tour. First up, you'll pay a visit to the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater, then stop for coffee in a mining town en-route to Breckenridge. Upon arrival, you'll have three hours of free time to explore.

Besides the ski mountain, which has year-round activities, Breck is also home to a vibrant Main Street with shops, galleries, and restaurants. There is also the Breckenridge Arts District, where you can watch artists work.

2. From Denver to Breckenridge by Car

From Denver, it is a beautiful one-hour-and-45-minute drive (depending on traffic and weather it can be much longer) via I-70 and Hwy 9 to Breckenridge. The route takes you over the Continental Divide as you cross the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and is stunning in any season.

It's easy to pick up a rental car at Denver International Airport or from one of a number of agencies around the city center depending on if you're arriving in the Mile High City by air or land. From the airport, you'll follow the signs to I-70 westbound and stay on this highway for more than an hour. Along the way, you'll drive through the Eisenhower Tunnel. You might notice a stark difference in weather between the sides of the tunnel as it goes through the Continental Divide.

After the tunnel, you'll continue west on I-70 to exit 203 and follow the signs to Highway 9 south. From here, it is a nine-mile drive to Breckenridge. Many people, especially during the winter ski season when prices are highest, don't stay in Breckenridge itself but book in one of the nearby feeder towns. These include Frisco, Dillon, and Silverthorne, which are all located just off I-70 (before you reach Breckenridge on Highway 9).

You can also take Highway 285 south from Denver to Highway 9 north. At 109 miles, this drive takes about 30 minutes longer than the I-70 route, however, on weekends, when I-70 gets very busy, you may save time going this way.

Driving yourself between the destinations will be a different experience in winter versus summer . Winter driving conditions between Denver and Breckenridge can be intense. The weather in Denver, for instance, may be sunny and mild, while in the mountains, heavy snow and whiteout conditions can exist.

Winter driving conditions usually begin in November and can run through the end of April; however, it can snow in the mountains at any time, even in the middle of July.

During the winter, expect icy roads at any time, especially going over the mountain passes. During blizzards, or if there is a bad accident, the department of transportation will often shut I-70 down for hours or even a day at a time. When this happens, getting between the city and the mountains, or even between exits in the mountains, can become impossible.

It is also important to understand when renting a car in the snowy season that Colorado has strict winter driving laws. During periods of heavy snow, these laws require your vehicle to be equipped with special tires or to be an SUV or AWD or, in some instances, both. If you attempt to drive in a vehicle that doesn't meet the requirements, you can face a steep fine (it is also really dangerous!).

3. From Denver to Breckenridge by Luxury SUV Charter

For luxe, door-to-door service, skip the rental car and book a luxury SUV charter Summit Express . The cheapest way to get between Denver and Breckenridge is to take public transportation utilizing the Colorado Department of Transportation's Bustang system, although it is not completely direct.

From Union Station in downtown Denver, you will take the CDOT West Line bus (departs twice daily at 7am and 5.40pm) west to the Frisco Transit Center . The trip takes about one hour and 45 minutes. From here, you'll catch the Summit Express bus towards Breckenridge Station. The station is still a little ways outside of town, so you may need to take an Uber or Lyft to your hotel.

Denver is Colorado’s biggest city and home to a major international airport. As such, it’s a popular jumping-off point for quick getaways and longer trips into the Rocky Mountains and beyond.

In less than two hours, you could be lacing up your hiking boots at a trailhead, sitting down to a multi-course meal, drawing inspiration from world-class sculptures or finding a moment of zen on your yoga mat. The hardest part about day-tripping from Denver is deciding which direction to go — so many options to choose from, and usually not enough time.

During a trip to Colorado , Denver is really just the starting point. To get a sense of all this state has to offer, consider adding one of these day trips to your itinerary.

1. Focus on wellness in Breckenridge

Travel time: 1 hour 45 minutes by car

Perched high in the Rockies at 9600ft above sea level, Breckenridge will feed your mind, body and spirit. In this historic mining town, you can take a mindful hike guided by a naturalist , do yoga on a standup paddleboard or in a grassy park, and dine on nutritious meals at eateries like Semplice Cafe , which serves up an array of refreshing vegan and vegetarian options. Depending on the timing of your visit, you may also be able to attend a soul-nourishing retreat at Clairvergence Wellness Center or tap into your creative side during an art class at Breck Create . Even if you just sit and breathe for a few quiet moments while staring up at the stunning mountain scenery, you’ll leave Breckenridge feeling rejuvenated and restored.

You can get a quick taste of Breck’s many wellness experiences in a day, but if you find yourself with extra time, there’s plenty to do and see here during a longer stay.

How to get to Breckenridge from Denver: Drive west on I-70 for 70 miles. At Frisco, exit the interstate and head south on CO-9 for about 10 miles. If you’re flying into Denver, the Peak 1 Express airport shuttle can transport you to Breck. 

2. Indulge in fine dining at Beaver Creek

Travel time: 2 hours by car

Treat yourself to a delicious day trip to Beaver Creek , a mountain resort that’s home to several unique fine-dining restaurants. Beano’s , situated roughly 9000ft above sea level, is housed in a stunning log cabin with a cozy fireplace and rustic decor. In the winter, the only way to reach this cabin is via a sleigh pulled by a snowcat; in the summer, you can take a horseback ride or a shuttle. Once you arrive, you’ll tuck into an upscale, multi-course meal while gazing out at sparkling ski slopes or fields of colorful wildflowers, depending on the season . (And be sure to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, as diners regularly spot bears and moose out the window.)

Other tasty options include Citrea , which serves up Mediterranean-inspired fare, and WYLD , which specializes in elegant, New American dishes. Little ones love the Candy Cabin , a colorful on-mountain paradise with nearly every sweet imaginable. And you’ll definitely want to make sure you’re at the resort’s main base area at 3pm, aka “Cookie Time,” when chefs bring around warm platters brimming with freshly made (and complimentary) chocolate chip cookies for everyone to enjoy.

How to get to Beaver Creek from Denver: Drive west on I-70 for roughly 100 miles, then exit the interstate at Avon. The main Beaver Creek base area is roughly 2.5 miles south on Village Road. The Colorado Department of Transportation’s Bustang Pegasus shuttle can also drop you off in nearby Avon.

3. Immerse yourself in art in Loveland

Travel time: 1 hour by car

Loveland has a few claims to fame — it’s a hot spot for postmarking letters around Valentine’s Day, for example — but art is this community’s biggest year-round draw. It’s home to two world-class sculpture gardens: Benson Sculpture Garden and Chapungu Sculpture Park . 

Located in the middle of town, Benson has more than 170 sculptures situated on the banks of several small ponds. They’re connected by walking trails, and slowly weaving your way through them all is a serene, relaxing endeavor. Chapungu, meanwhile, is located east of Loveland’s main core and spotlights 82 stone sculptures created by Zimbabwean artists. Also, check out indoor venues like Artworks Center for Contemporary Art , Independence Gallery and the Loveland Museum .

How to get to Loveland from Denver: Head north on I-25 for roughly 40 miles, then head west on US 34. (To reach some parts of Loveland, including Chapungu, you’ll need to head east of I-25.) You can also take the Bustang North Line .

4. Feast on green chile in Pueblo

Coloradans put green chile on everything, from scrambled eggs to burritos and enchiladas. But one of the absolute best ways to chow down on this beloved spicy stew is by eating a “slopper,” or a burger that’s smothered in the stuff. Pueblo is slopper central, with restaurants like Gray's Coors Tavern and Sunset Inn Bar & Grill serving them up in droves. If you’re visiting in September, you can also attend the annual Pueblo Chile & Frijoles Festival , which has been going strong for nearly 30 years.

How to get to Pueblo from Denver: Drive south on Interstate 25 for 115 miles, passing through towns like Castle Rock and Colorado Springs on the way. Though Greyhound operates a bus between the two cities, public transit options are limited.

5. Savor craft beers in Fort Collins

Colorado is home to some of the earliest craft beer pioneers — and there’s no better place to sip hoppy IPAs and malty brown ales than in Fort Collins. Located north of Denver, not far from the Wyoming border, this funky college town is home to more than 20 craft breweries — and counting, since new ones are opening up all the time. 

Some of the well-known forefathers of the entire US craft beer industry are located right in town, such as New Belgium Brewing Company and Odell Brewing Company . But you’ll also find plenty of smaller, newer spots where brewers are getting extra creative, like Funkwerks , Horse & Dragon , and Peculiar Ales . You could easily spend a few days to a week in Fort Collins, but it’s also a great place to spend a sunny afternoon.

How to get to Fort Collins from Denver: Drive north on I-25 for 60 miles, then take one of several exits to head west into Fort Collins. A handful of public transit buses run between the two cities, including the Bustang North Line and FLEX .

6. Marvel at rock formations at Garden of the Gods

Travel time: 1 hour 15 minutes by car

Though Colorado is famous for the craggy, snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the Centennial State is also home to some other road trip-worthy geologic formations, like Garden of the Gods . Situated northwest of Colorado Springs, near the small town of Manitou Springs, this public park protects towering red sandstone formations that formed roughly 65 million years ago. 

Just marveling at the otherworldly shapes and figures is more than enough, but you can also rent bikes, take a guided segway tour, take a hike, and go rock climbing, among other activities. Garden of the Gods is a perfect day-trip destination, but to experience the broader Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs area, you may need more time.

How to get to Garden of the Gods from Denver: Head south on I-25 for 64 miles. Get off at exit 146, then head west on Garden of the Gods Road. Turn south once you reach N 30th Street, and you’ll arrive at the visitor center. If you don’t have a car, the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Bustang South Line can get you most of the way there — but you’ll need to take a few more buses or call a ride once you reach Colorado Springs.

7. Watch wildlife in Estes Park

Travel time: 1 hour and 30 minutes by car

Estes Park is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park , which protects 415 square miles of wilderness in northern Colorado. Because of its close proximity to the park and other public lands, like the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests , Estes Park is a prime wildlife viewing destination. Animals loom so large in this mountain town that it even hosts an annual elk festival every fall, when males are searching for mates and making loud noises to prove their dominance, a behavior known as “bugling.”

Year-round, you may catch a glimpse of elk, mule deer, marmots, beavers, bears, coyotes, moose, mountain lions, bobcats and more. Dozens of species of birds call Estes Park home, too, including birds of prey like Cooper’s hawks and peregrine falcons. If you do decide to make a day trip, set your alarm clock early or plan to stay until after sunset: wildlife tend to be most active around dawn and dusk.

How to get to Estes Park from Denver: Head northwest on US 36 for roughly 60 miles, passing through Boulder on the way. Or ride the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Bustang .

Frisco Main Street

Drive time: 15 minutes  

You’ll likely drive right through Frisco on your way to Breckenridge if you are taking I-70, but don’t just breeze by. Frisco has all the small-town charm of Breckenridge with some unique features. Main Street is a great place to shop, enjoy a bite to eat and even learn about local history. In addition, Frisco sits on Lake Dillon and offers a marina with a beach, paddleboard and kayak rentals and even a tiki bar.  

If you’re looking to make the most out of your day, try renting e-bikes and taking the scenic route from Breckenridge to Frisco via the Blue River Recreation Path. In the summer explore hiking trails right from Main Street and in the winter enjoy snow tubing and sledding at Frisco Adventure Park .    

Drive time: 30 minutes  

Located in South Park sits the historic mining settlement of Fairplay. This isn’t the South Park that you might imagine from the popular cartoon “South Park,” instead you’ll find remnants of one of the earliest settlements of the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. For history buffs, the main attraction is South Park City , a 19 th century mining town with over 60,000 artifacts listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Before you leave, check out the local watering holes like South Park Brewing and Snitching Lady Distillery .   

Georgetown  

Drive time: 45 minutes  

Colorado towns are full of history and Georgetown is no exception. This is a great spot to stop on your way to or from Breckenridge if you are arriving in Denver. You can explore Georgetown’s rich mining history through museums and mine tours or via the Georgetown Loop Railroad , one of the most popular attractions. On the Georgetown Loop Railroad, you’ll take a step back in time as you board a historic steam engine. Be sure to check their calendar of events as the trains are transformed during special times of the year like the holiday season.   

Leadville’s Downtown During the Ski Joring Event

Drive time: 50 minutes  

Leadville is the highest incorporated city in North America sitting at 10,200 feet but that is not its only attraction. As you walk downtown, it’s easy to picture Leadville as the wild west town it once was with its prominent Victorian architecture. Be sure to stop into the legendary Silver Dollar Saloon where figures like Doc Holiday and Molly Brown were frequent patrons.  

The surrounding areas of Leadville offer excellent opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Nearby Turquoise and Twin Lakes make for a great day on the water in the summer. In the winter, don’t miss the Leadville Ski Joring weekend w here skiers are pulled by horses and riders over a series of jumps right on Leadville’s snow-packed downtown.

Drive time: 1 hour and 20 minutes  

Our last stop on this day trip journey is Buena Vista, Spanish for good view, and we can promise the good views! Buena Vista sits in a valley with a backdrop of the stunning Collegiate Peaks rising from the horizon. The town is best known for outdoor adventures including white water rafting in the summers with many guided tours in the area. We recommend taking time to explore the historic St. Elmo ghost town and soaking in the surrounding natural hot springs.

Getting to and around Breckenridge is easy and convenient , due to free transportation options and our easily walkable town. Breckenridge’s shuttle and transportation systems will help any visitor make the most of their trip. Here’re the ins and outs on how to get around town and make the most of the Breckenridge transportation services available.

How Far is Breckenridge from Denver?

Once wheels touch down at Denver International Airport, there’s only one thing left separating you from the mountains: the drive! The good news is, there are plenty of mountain shuttles ready to take you up to Breckenridge, so you can ditch the rental car and hitch a ride with one of these airport transportation options to make your travels a breeze.

Prepare for about a 2 hour drive from DIA to the mountains, and about 1.5 hours if you’re coming from the city of Denver. Winter weather and skier traffic can often delay travel, so be sure to always give yourself extra time if you need to catch a flight.

• Local’s Tip: Skier traffic is at its worst going Westbound on Friday afternoons and Eastbound on Sundays. Plan to visit on week days or extend your stay to avoid the front-range crowds coming up on the weekends.

Shuttle Services from Denver International Airport (DIA) to the Mountains

Most DIA to Breckenridge shuttles offer door-to-door service and enough room for skis and luggage.

Save time, money and stress by booking a shuttle from the airport to Breckenridge. You won’t have to worry about finding a rental car to fit all your gear, driving in winter weather conditions and traffic, or finding parking once you’re here. Plus, you’ll be free to take in the epic views and catch up with family and friends. Shuttle services are well equipped to fit all your luggage and ski gear and most offer door-to-door service. Choose a private shuttle for your crew, or opt for a shared ride to save a few bucks. Booking online in advance is always the best option, but if you need a last minute ride, check with the transportation desk at the airport or call  a mountain shuttle service provider to see if they have any seats left for you.

If you’ve got a late flight, your plans change or you simply want a private ride, Uber and Lyft are always great options. Book an Uber Ski ride to get a vehicle specifically equipped with ski racks to get you and your gear into to the mountains.

Public Transportation

For those on a budget, public transportation is a great option. Bustang busses run from Denver to multiple destinations, including Glenwood Springs, Fort Collins, Vail and Colorado Springs. The RTD rail and bus service is another cheap way to travel throughout the Denver area.

To get to Breckenridge from DIA, start by taking the A Line on the RTD rail service from DIA to Union Station (downtown Denver) for just $10.50. From Union Station, take the Bustang West Line toward Grand Junction and get off at the Frisco Bus Station. From there, take the free Summit Stage bus to Breckenridge. Once you’ve arrived at the Breckenridge Station, you can easily get to your lodging property on the FreeRide bus, free lodging shuttles or ride share service.

Also, in addition to CDOT’s Bustang West service, which stops at Frisco, the Pegasus service also runs from Denver Union Station to Frisco and the  Snowstang service runs direct from Denver to Breckenridge

While we highly recommend going carless in Breckenridge , if you do need to rent a car or are driving in from another state, make sure you’re comfortable with mountain driving conditions and choose a vehicle that’ll fit your checked baggage, skis and snowboards. Walking & Biking

Once in Breckenridge, you’ll find it’s easy to get around town by foot or on bike and that everything is just a few blocks away. FreeRide busses are equipped with bike racks if you decide to change your mind, but often fill up in the summer.

Summit Stage Bus

If you’re planning to visit neighboring towns during your trip or your lodging property is a few towns over, the Summit Stage is a free county-wide bus system servicing Breckenridge, Blue River, Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin (winter only), Summit Cove and Copper Mountain.

Hotel & Lodging Shuttles

Many lodging properties and hotels around town provide free shuttles to and from downtown Breckenridge and tend to pick up and drop off at main attractions and Main Street Trolley stops. Be sure to call your property to see if shuttles are available during your stay.

Uber, Lyft and multiple taxi services are available to help you travel around Breckenridge or between towns.

BreckConnect Gondola

The Breckenridge Gondola is one of the easiest and fastest ways to get to Breckenridge Ski Resort from downtown.

The BreckConnect Gondola transports guests from town to the base of Peak 7 and 8 in both winter and summer. The gondola typically shuts down late spring and late fall- check current lift status before heading out .

Depending on snowfall and conditions,  Breckenridge Resort is typically open for the ski season from the beginning of November to late May. In the summer months, the resort is home to Epic Discovery park. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to get to the resort is to take a free shuttle or bus into town from your lodging property and then take the free gondola up to Peak 8. From there, you can access all parts of the ski area and fun park.

Paid skier parking is available outside of town, in-town and slope-side, however spots fill up quickly. Free parking is available on Airport Road with shuttles provided.

IN-TOWN AND PAID PARKING 

The Town of Breckenridge has implemented an innovative smart parking system that can be used with credit cards at pay stations or on smartphones on the app. Rates average at $1 or less per hour and max out at a daily rate. Payment is required each time a vehicle changes location. Fifteen-minute free parking is available in most locations but parkers must still register their license plate on the app or at a meter.

SKIER PARKING 

Skier parking is available outside of town, in-town and slope-side. The closer you get to the slopes, the more you’ll generally pay for parking. Free skier parking is available on Airport Road with shuttles provided.

Free Parking on Airport Road Your best bet for free parking is the Satellite lot at 1690 Airport Road. The town recently increased shuttle service to and from these lots to 15-minute intervals.

Beaver Run Lot (Access to Peak 9): Monday-Thursday: $15 Friday-Sunday and Peak Days: $20 Handicap parking available at the Beaver Run lot

Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge is a picturesque mountain town in Colorado that offers an abundance of outdoor adventures and breathtaking scenery. While Breckenridge itself is a destination worth exploring, the surrounding area is also teeming with natural wonders and attractions that are perfect for day trips. As a local resident and avid explorer, I’ve had the pleasure of embarking on many day trips from Breckenridge, and I’m excited to share my experiences with you.

Day Trips from Breckenridge: A Journey Through Colorado’s Natural Wonders

Discovering the majesty of rocky mountain national park.

One of the most iconic destinations near Breckenridge is Rocky Mountain National Park, a stunning wilderness area that spans over 415 square miles. Just a scenic 2-hour drive from Breckenridge, this national park offers a plethora of outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts. From hiking to wildlife viewing to simply taking in the awe-inspiring vistas, there’s something for everyone here.

One of my favorite hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park is the Emerald Lake Trail. This moderate 3.6-mile round-trip hike takes you through pristine alpine forests and along babbling streams, leading to a series of stunning emerald-green lakes surrounded by towering peaks. The views along the trail are simply breathtaking, and I highly recommend packing a picnic to enjoy by the lakeside.

 Exploring the Enchanting Garden of the Gods

Located about 2 hours south of Breckenridge, Garden of the Gods is a mesmerizing natural wonder that will transport you to a surreal landscape. This iconic park features towering red rock formations that have been sculpted by erosion over millions of years, creating a unique and otherworldly setting.

I was mesmerized by the beauty of Garden of the Gods as soon as I arrived. The park offers a variety of paved and unpaved trails that allow you to explore the formations up close. The Perkins Central Garden Trail is a popular choice, as it takes you on a loop through the heart of the park, showcasing some of the most famous rock formations such as the Balanced Rock and the Siamese Twins. Along the way, you’ll also encounter an abundance of flora and fauna, making for a truly enchanting experience.

Unwinding in the Soothing Hot Springs of Glenwood Springs

If you’re in the mood for relaxation and rejuvenation, a visit to the nearby town of Glenwood Springs is a must. Just a scenic 2.5-hour drive from Breckenridge, Glenwood Springs is famous for its natural hot springs, which are said to have healing properties and offer a soothing respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

One of my favorite hot springs in Glenwood Springs is the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, which is the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool. The water is a constant 90 degrees Fahrenheit and is rich in minerals, making it incredibly therapeutic and soothing. I spent hours soaking in the warm waters, surrounded by the majestic mountains, and felt completely rejuvenated afterward.

Embarking on an Alpine Adventure in Aspen

If you’re up for a scenic drive through the stunning Colorado mountains, a Day Trip from Breckenridge to Aspen is a fantastic choice. Located about 1.5 hours southwest of Breckenridge, Aspen is a world-renowned ski resort town that offers a wide array of outdoor adventures year-round. During the warmer months, Aspen is a haven for hiking and biking enthusiasts. The Maroon Bells, a pair of iconic peaks, is a must-visit destination. For a more adrenaline-pumping adventure, you can also try your hand at white-water rafting in the nearby Roaring Fork River, or go mountain biking on the extensive network of scenic trails that crisscross the surrounding mountains. And if you visit Aspen during the winter months, you can take advantage of world-class skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the nearby Aspen Snowmass ski resort, known for its challenging slopes and picturesque scenery.

Soaking in the History and Culture of Leadville

Located just about an hour south of Breckenridge , Leadville is a historic mining town that offers a glimpse into Colorado’s rich mining heritage. With its well-preserved Victorian architecture and charming downtown, Leadville is a delightful destination for history buffs and culture enthusiasts.

One of the must-visit attractions in Leadville is the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, which showcases the history and technology of mining through interactive exhibits and displays. You can learn about the challenges and triumphs of the miners who once called Leadville home, and gain a deeper appreciation for the role that mining played in shaping Colorado’s history.

Leadville is also known for its scenic outdoor recreational opportunities. You can take a scenic drive along the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Or, if you’re up for a challenge, you can hike to the top of Colorado’s highest peak, Mount Elbert, which towers at 14,440 feet above sea level. The views from the summit are truly awe-inspiring and well worth the effort.

Chasing Waterfalls in the Beautiful Box Canyon Falls

Nestled in the charming town of Ouray, which is about 2 hours southwest of Breckenridge, Box Canyon Falls is a hidden gem that is worth exploring. This breathtaking waterfall is located in a narrow box canyon and can be reached via a short, scenic hike from the town.

As you hike along the trail, you’ll be surrounded by towering cliffs and lush vegetation, until you reach a viewing platform that offers a mesmerizing view of the waterfall plunging down into the canyon. The sheer power and beauty of the falls are truly awe-inspiring, and you can feel the mist on your face as you stand in awe of this natural wonder.

In addition to the waterfall, Ouray is also known for its natural hot springs, which offer a perfect way to relax and unwind after your hike. You can soak in the soothing mineral-rich waters and take in the stunning mountain views, making for a truly rejuvenating experience.

Discovering the Beauty of the Dillon Reservoir

Located just a stone’s throw away from Breckenridge, the Dillon Reservoir is a man-made lake that offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With its pristine blue waters and scenic mountain backdrop, the reservoir is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and hiking.

One of my favorite ways to explore the Dillon Reservoir is by taking a scenic boat tour, which allows you to take in the stunning scenery while learning about the history and ecology of the area. You can also rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the tranquil coves and inlets at your own pace, or simply relax on the shores and enjoy a picnic while taking in the breathtaking views.

If you prefer to stay on land, the Dillon Reservoir also offers several scenic hiking and biking trails that meander along the shoreline, offering stunning vistas of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The Sapphire Point Overlook Trail is a popular hike that offers panoramic views of the Dillon Reservoir and the surrounding peaks. It’s a moderate hike that takes you through lush forests and open meadows, with several viewpoints along the way where you can pause to take in the stunning scenery.
