Delft is a beautiful city in the province of Zuid-Holland, The Netherlands. In Dutch Delft has the nickname Prinsenstad or prince city. Delft is the city of the Dutch Royal Family, called the Oranjes. It started all back in the 15th century when Willem van Oranje lived and was murdered in Delft. Now, if you think everything in Delft is connected to the Royal Family, that’s not the case. But there are some special sights that have a connection to the Dutch Royal Family.

What to do in Delft, The Netherlands

Here you will find a complete itinerary to one day in Delft, The Netherlands. There are plenty of attractions that you can and should visit in Delft. However, for spending one day in Delft I personally think that the activities below are a good way to get an introduction to this gorgeous city.

Best cafe for breakfast in Delft

You cannot start the day in Delft without a good breakfast. One of the best, and cutest, breakfast spots of Delft is Bij Best . Bij Best can be found in one of the small streets behind the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church). The best part? Bij Best serves breakfast the entire day. You can find amazing street food, fresh juices and plenty of more. But what makes Bij Best truly special is the fact that they incorporate the Indonesian kitchen in their food. So, if you’re looking for good places on where to eat breakfast in Delft, then bring a visit to Bij Best.

Walk through Delft

As Delft is one of the many beautiful and old cities in The Netherlands, that means you find pretty canal houses, gorgeous streets, many monuments, and beautiful looking canals. Here you can find a walking tour that you should walk to explore the most beautiful streets and monuments of Delft. This way you can explore Delft, like a local and off the beaten path. The tourists that visit usually don’t go further than the markt square and one of the Delft porcelain shops and museums.

Most beautiful streets of Delft

Achterom, Bagijnhof, Beestenmarkt, Binnenwatersloot, Boterbrug, Brabantse Turfmarkt, Breestraat, Burgwal, Choorstraat, Heilige Geestkerkhof, Hippolytusbuurt, Jabod Gerritstraat, Kerkstraat, Kolk, Lange Geer, Paardenmarkt, Nieuwstraat, Noordeinde, Oosteinde, Oude Kerkstraat, Oude Langendijk, Papenstraat, Phoenixstraat, Pluympot, Rietveld, Verwersdijk, Vlamingstraat, Voldersgracht, Voorstraat, Vrouwjuttenland, Vrouwenregt, Westvest and Wijnhaven.

Special monuments in Delft

Oostpoort : This is the only city gate that Delft has left. It dates back to the 1400s and can be found at Oostpoort 1.

Kleine Oostpoortbrug : In front of the city gate of the Oostpoort you will find a beautiful bridge. This was part of the Oostpoort in 1514.

Stadhuis (city hall) can be found at markt 87. It was first built around the year 1200. It was rebuilt, burned down and eventually reconstructed in 1629.

Visit the Oude and Nieuwe Kerk of Delft

When I’m in a new city, I need to know what the city and surrounding looks like from above. If you’re like me, keep on reading. And if you want to know where the best view of Delft can be found, continue as well.

Visit the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) as the 85-meter tower will give you the best view of Delft. And if the weather is great, you can even see Rotterdam and Den Haag (The Hague). From the tower, you will look at the markt, the city hall and much more. But if you want to climb the tower of the Nieuwe Kerk you have to be physically fit, as there are 376 stairs.

The Nieuwe Kerk dates back to the 1300s, so it’s not that new anymore. Besides the tower, I find the Nieuwe Kerk very interesting because of its history. You will find the royal tombs at the Nieuwe Kerk where almost every member of the Royal Family eventually find its peace. Although you cannot enter them, and which members exactly lay in those graves is unknown to the public, this makes it an interesting mystery.

The Oude Kerk (old church) dates back to around 1050 when it was only a small church. It has beautiful, typical, old Dutch glass windows. And is also beautiful to visit, although the Nieuwe Kerk is more special.

Find opening times and admission fees for the Old and New Church in Delft here.

Visit the courtyards (hofjes) of Delft

Courtyards, or hofjes in Dutch, can be found all over The Netherlands. In big and small cities. They were extremely popular in the 17th century, so logically Delft has them as well. Here you can find the courtyards in Delft that you should visit.

Hofje van Almonde

This courtyard dates back to 1607 and was a gift from the sister or a mayor. She gifted her home to virgins and maidservants.

Address Bagijnhof 10- 22 Delft

Hofje van Pauw

Elisabeth Pauw was the daughter of a mayor of Delft but never had any children in her lifetime. So, she wrote in her testament that a hofje should be built with the money she left behind. It was built in 1707 and exists out of 8 houses.

Address Paardenmarkt 54-62 Delft

Klaeuwshofje

This courtyard in Delft was built by the owners of brewery De Klaeuwe in 1603. The courtyard exists out of 12 small houses and a big house for the founders of the courtyard in Delft.

Address Oranje Plantage 58 – 77 Delft

Visit Museum Prinsenhof in Delft

One of the best museums in Delft is Museum Prinsenhof. This museum cannot miss on your one-day itinerary in Delft. Here you will find a beautiful collection of art and ‘Delfts Blauw’. Besides that, you will learn everything about the history of Delft and will see the bullet holes of the murder on Willem van Oranje. He was murdered in De Prinsenhof, which was his own house, on the 10th of July 1584. The body of the prince can be found in the Nieuwe Kerk, where he rests in the Royal grave chambers. Don’t forget to visit the beautiful garden of the museum.

Address Sint Agathaplein 1 2611 HR Delft

For more information about Museum Prinsenhof  click here.

Art gallery Het Prinsenkwartier

As you’re in the area anyway, visit the art gallery of Het Prinsenkwartier. It’s located next to the Museum Prinsenhof. Het Prinsenkwartier in Delft is a centre for the creative industry. Here you can find several expositions, debates and plenty more things to do. What I love about Het Prinsenkwartier is the fact that you’ll see all sorts of people. `so many different age groups and types of people that walk through the expositions.

Admission fee/ ticket price None for the expositions.

Opening times

Address Sint Agathaplein 4 2611 HR Delft

Winkeltje Kouwenhoven

Winkeltje Kouwenhoven is part of Museum Prinsenhof Delft and is located next to the museum. This cute, little shop is an authentic shop that sells typical Dutch nostalgic products. The interior is more than hundred years old and makes this shop one of the cutest shops of Delft that you should bring a visit. You can buy old Dutch candy, toys, books and much more.

Tuesday – Sunday 13:00 – 16:45

Winkeltje Kouwenhoven is opened on Sunday every second and fourth week of the month.

Eat lunch at one of the best cafes of Delft

One of the best lunch cafes in Delft is Kek . This is a coffee bar and also very famous for latte art. The atmosphere feels cosy and homey, but most importantly, the food at Kek is also very good. No matter what time of day it is, it’s always time for good food at Kek in Delft. Here you can find one of the best organic lunches of Delft.

So, if you’re looking to be environmentally friendly while travelling through The Netherlands, visiting Kek is a great idea. Take a seat at one of the benches at the window and I can assure you that the hours will pass by. One little thing, the menu of Kek changes very often which makes it one of the best lunch spots in Delft for me. I like lunch restaurants that change it up.

Visit Royal Delft De Porceleyne Fles

De Porceleyne Fles is the only Delft blue pottery factory left. And it has been constantly used since 1653, in the 17th century. This factory still makes the Delft porcelain, but the best part is, you can go for a factory tour. At this Royal Delft pottery factory, and museum, you will get to know the history of the Delft blue pottery.

Besides that, you will see historical items, can get a factory tour and can even buy some Delft blue pottery. There’s an audio tour, beautifully painted pieces of Delft porcelain as the Nachtwacht, and plenty of more. Keep in mind that on Sunday no employees are working. So if you want to see the employees work on the Delft porcelain, then visit this factory on other days. Don’t forget the garden at the factory. The entrance is still the same as in 1653 and the garden is lovely.

Address Royal Delft is located just outside the centre of Delft. It’s a 20-minute walk from de Markt and 15-minute from the Delft train station. Otherwise, they are a few bus stops nearby as well.

Visit the botanical garden in Delft

One of my most favourite things to do, no matter what city I visit, is to look for botanical gardens. And you’re in for a treat. Delft has a beautiful botanical garden, called Hortus Botanicus Delft . And it is one of the things you have to see in Delft.

This is not one of the oldest botanical gardens of The Netherlands, as it’s been established in 1917, but still, one you have to visit. It is part of the TU Delft, which is one of the best technical universities of The Netherlands.

What I love about botanical gardens is that they are a quiet space in a bustling city. Delft is a city that is renowned for having a big student population, so it’s great to ease and relax your mind in the Delft Hortus Botanicus. That makes visiting the botanical gardens one of the best things you can do in Delft. The whole garden is bigger than you’d expect, so definitely worth an attraction that you should visit when you’re in Delft. You can buy tickets in the museum shop.

Go vintage shopping in Delft

One of the best places to go vintage shopping in Delft is Vintage Island . Although this is a typical vintage shop with brands such as Levi’s you will find whatever your heart desires. This vintage shop has several other locations through The Netherlands. But it will still make your vintage heart flutter in happiness.

Address Hippolytusbuurt 4 2611 HN Delft

The next vintage shop you have to visit in Delft, which is one of a kind, is Offline is the New Black . This shop is a mixed store, so not completely vintage. It has a lot of designer vintage clothing, handmade jewellery, furniture, and Dutch design. They sell products from young Dutch designers and believe in a mixture of old and new. The vintage clothing comes from France and the jewellery is made in the same shop. This store is one of my most favourite spots of Delft if I want to find some different clothing than the big brands such as Zara and H&M.

Address Oude Delft 149 Delft

Best place to get dinner in Delft

One of my most favourite restaurants in Delft is The Living . The Living is one of the best restaurants in Delft, but it’s slightly different than you would imagine. The Living is a takeaway and has a few seats, but no toilets. Why do I recommend this restaurants/ takeaway in Delft then? Because at The Living you pay for your food in weight. 2,15 euros per 100 grams and 3,50 euros for a soup portion.

The reason they do that is because at The Living they want to reduce food waste. They also only have products with the smallest ecological footprint. That means if you’re looking for a vegan or vegetarian restaurant/ take- away in Delft, The Living is your spot. Around 80% of their food is vegan and everything is 100% vegetarian. The menu changes every two weeks.

Address Asvest 8 2611 PK Delft

Go for drinks or dance your worries away at Steck in Delft

Steck is one of the best places for live music in Delft. The atmosphere is great and so is the music. If you want to relax after a busy, long but exciting day, you have to visit club/ bar Steck in Delft. In my opinion, it’s not only the best place for live music but also one of the best bars of Delft. You will find anything from 90’s music to jazz and Dj’s. If you’re not into dancing but just fancy some beers or cocktails in Delft, don’t you worry. Without dancing, you’ll be perfectly fine at Steck as well.

Address Kromstraat 25 2611 EP Delft

How to get to Delft

From Amsterdam: The easiest way to get from Amsterdam to Delft is by train. Take the train from Amsterdam Centraal in the direction of Vlissingen. Get out at Delft train station. This will take you around one hour.

From Rotterdam: The best way to get from Rotterdam to delft is by taking the train from Rotterdam Centraal. Get the train in the direction of Amsterdam Centraal or Den Haag Centraal. Get out at Delft. This will take you around 15 minutes.

From The Hague: If you want to travel from The Hague to Delft I would also recommend you to take the train. Take the train from Den Haag Centraal in the direction of Eindhoven or Dordrecht. Get out at Delft. This will take you around 12 minutes.

This itinerary to spending one day in Delft is pretty packed. So, don’t worry if you’re not able to do all these great things in Delft, as long as you’re enjoying yourself and the city, that’s all that matters. If you’re not into vintage shopping, scratch that, if you’re a fast traveller you might do all these attractions in Delft. Travel how you like. I hope this article was useful again. Not far from Amsterdam , the picturesque canal town of Delft became a thriving center for ceramics in the 17th century, when the Dutch East India Company began importing blue-and-white porcelain from China.

Today, the Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles (Royal Delft) is the last remaining earthenware factory in the town. Established in 1653, it continues to produce famous Delfts Blauw (Delft Blue) ceramics based on historic methods.

Royal Delft Pottery Factory Tour

Royal Delft Pottery Factory Tour

Most of our travel is kid-friendly but there are a few things to check out that just are not. With two of my girlfriends in town for the weekend, I left the kids at home and we set out to tour the Royal Delft Pottery Factory .

The factory is adjacent to the TU Delft campus and is easily reachable by car, bike or public transportation. There is a discount for Museumkaart members. Admission includes an audio tour available in many languages.

If you are interested in starting the tour with a movie, which I recommend, ask at the front desk. The movie has to be started by someone in the room, which they only seem to do on request. We went back at the end and asked about the movie.

The tour takes you through the process of painting the pottery, including seeing a master artist at work. You will also learn about the history of Royal Delft Pottery and view a huge collection.

The audio tour goes into detail about the many pieces on display. Some of the works are owned by the Royal family and are on loan to the company.

These painted “wooden” shoes were one of my favorite items.

The tour also takes you onto the factory floor. This is where it becomes particularly not child friendly. The pottery is all poured and fired on location. There are shelves upon shelves of pottery waiting to be painted, with nothing separating you and the shelves except a yellow line on the floor.

Some of the pottery is hand-painted while others use a transfer process to mass produce it. These are denoted by the markings on the bottom of the pieces.

The tour drops you off in the gift shop, which honestly was one of my favorite parts. This is a great chance to see all the different types of designs you learned about on the tour.

We ended our time at Royal Delft in their on-site cafe. The cakes and coffee were excellent. If I had thought ahead I would have made a reservation for a full tea. These reservations must be made 24-hours in advance. There were a few families enjoying the tea and it looked like a wonderful way to end a visit.

A visit to Royal Delft is a perfect afternoon adventure while kids are napping or otherwise engaged. I hope to visit Delft Blue , the other Delft potttery factory so I can tell you more about this wonderful town.

Delft Blue Pottery; The 10 Most Asked Questions & Answers

Photo of author

Delft Blue pottery is part of our Dutch cultural heritage, like windmills, wooden shoes, and Dutch cheese. However, Delft Blue is less known than these other Dutch icons.

Everything you always wanted to know about Delft Blue Pottery

I live near Delft and researched Delft Blue pottery to answer the 10 most frequently asked questions.

Delft Blue Pottery

Read on to learn more about the fascinating history of Delft Blue pottery, or click on the question about Delft Blue pottery that interests you most.

1. What Is Delft Blue Pottery?

Let’s start with the most obvious question: What is Delft Blue pottery?

Delft Blue pottery, also known as Delft Blue, Delftware, or Delft porcelain, is the characteristic white tin-glazed ceramic pottery with blue decorations, traditionally produced in Delft in The Netherlands. Delft Blue pottery was first made around 1600 as an alternative to Chinese porcelain.

The technique to produce white tin-glazed ceramics originated in the Middle East and spread through Europe via Spain and Italy to Antwerp. Many potters from Antwerp fled to Dutch cities after the Spanish conquered Antwerp in 1585 and introduced these new pottery techniques in The Netherlands.

Delft was a city in the Netherlands that became popular among Antwerp potters looking for a new hometown.

The Flemish potters in Delft succeeded best in refining their techniques to produce much thinner, more luxurious earthenware that could be used as tableware, and we now know as Delft blue pottery. Potters in other Dutch cities also made tin-glazed pottery, but the pottery from Delft was considered the best in The Netherlands.

Delft Blue pottery was first produced around 1600 to copy Chinese porcelain introduced by Dutch merchant ships that returned from China. Delft blue pottery became popular because Chinese porcelain was costly, and only the rich could afford it. However, it was impossible to copy Chinese porcelain because the clay used to produce porcelain contained kaolin, which was unavailable to the Delft potters.

Most of the Delft blue pottery is the characteristic white and blue faience , although other color schemes were used. Most of the Delft Blue Pottery was household tableware for everyday use, but pieces like vases, pictorial plates, and tiles were also in great demand.

The handpainted illustrations on the Delft Blue pottery were often typical Dutch, like Dutch landscapes, windmills, and fishing boats. Furthermore, tiles with proverbs and sayings were trendy and present in virtually every Dutch household.

The Delft Blue pottery production peaked around 1700-1750, producing millions of Delft Blue pieces annually. However, in 1745, kaolin-containing clay, used to produce Chinese porcelain, was also discovered in Cornwall, England. This discovery made creamware production cheaper and more robust than tin-glazed earthenware from Delft.

Josiah Wedgewood founded his English creamware factory in 1759, and English creamware took over the Delft Blue market because it was much more robust and suitable for everyday use. Wedgewood is still a well-known tableware brand today. My tableware is Wedgewood tableware because it is ideal for everyday use due to its robustness.

After the introduction of English creamware by Wedgewood, other European creamware producers in Europe also started producing various types of creamware. At the same time, Chinese porcelain became much cheaper.

Consequently, the global market for Delft Blue decreased after 1759, and virtually all 33 Delft Blue factories disappeared. Only a single Delft Blue factory, De Porceleyne Fles, survived and still produces Delft Blue pottery today.

2. Why Is Most Delft Blue Pottery White And Blue?

Virtually all Delftware (> 90%) was white and blue. Other colors like red and orange were also used but were less popular.

There were three reasons why most Delft Blue pottery was white and blue.

  • Delft Blue was an alternative to Chinese porcelain, and Chinese porcelain was also white and blue.
  • The use of Blue was much easier in the production process than red.
  • White and blue Delft Blue pottery was much more affordable than white and red pottery.

A Delftware tile with a Dutch saying. a picture is worth a thousand words

The white color of Delft Blue is due to the tin glaze used to coat the pottery. The earthenware was dipped into a bath of tin glaze containing lead, tin oxide, sand, soda, and salt before being fired in a kiln at 800 – 1000 o C. Once fired, tin oxide is white, shiny, and opaque; the well-known glossy white background of Delft Blue pottery appears.

The blue color of the decorations of Delft Blue is due to the use of paint containing cobalt oxide . Cobalt oxide is grey but will turn blue once fired in a kiln at 800 – 1000 o C. The more cobalt oxide the paint contained, the brighter the Blue on the Delftware.

Delft Blue’s illustrations were handpainted until ± 1750 when the first techniques were introduced to print images on ceramics. However, Handpainting Delft Blue was not wholly abandoned after 1750 but was reserved for unique and more expensive pieces.

3. How Is Delft Blue Pottery Made?

A potter from Delft, Gerrit Paape, published a detailed overview of the Delft Blue pottery’s production process in 1794. The book is called De Plateelbakker of Delftsch Aardewerkmaker (The Potter or Delftware Maker ).

The traditional Delft blue production process was a multi-step sequential process that could take two weeks and included the following production steps :

  • The different types of clay were first purified and mixed.
  • Delft blue pieces were then shaped by hand or using a mold.
  • Before baking, newly shaped pieces needed to dry for several days.
  • The new Delft blue pieces were baked at 800-1000 o C for the first time.
  • Subsequently, the new Delft blue pieces were dipped into a bath of tin glaze.
  • When the glaze had dried up, illustrations on the new Delft Blue pieces were painted by hand.
  • Finally, the Delft blue pieces required final baking at 800-1000 o C

Nowadays, some steps in the production process are more optimized, nicely illustrated in the video of the Royal Delft factory below. If you spend two minutes watching this video, you will get an excellent impression of how Delft Blue is made.

4. How Valuable Is Delft Blue Pottery?

Prices of new Delft Blue pottery pieces are reasonable.

I have looked up prices on several websites, and prices of new Delft Blue pottery are in the ranges in the table below.

You can buy much more expensive new Delft Blue pottery if you want to. For example, check out the Royal Delft factory webshop to look at tulip vases for € 16.000 or a tile painting of Rembrandt’s Night Watch for a mere € 13.500…..!

Antique Delft Blue pieces are much more expensive than new Delft Blue pieces. High-quality antique Delftware pottery typically sells for US$ 3.000-6.000, but exceptional antique genuine Delftware pieces have been sold for US$ 100.000-200.000 .

The best antique and most valuable Delft Blue pieces end up in one of the best museums in The Netherlands .

For example, The Kunstmuseum in The Hague has one of the world’s largest and most beautiful Delftware collections.

The exhibition is called Delftware Wonderware, and I highly recommend visiting it.

5. How To Tell If Delft Blue Pottery Is Genuine?

Delft Blue is not a protected trade name; any producer can call his pottery Delft Blue. White and blue faience was also produced in other Dutch cities and European countries. Thus, Delft Blue became a synonym for any white and blue faience, whether made in Delft or not.

To determine if Delft Blue is genuine, experts analyze the marks of Delft potters at the back or bottom of Delftware products. In addition, experts will study the materials and decorations of the Delftware object to verify its authenticity .

The increased competition was an important reason that Delft Blue potters started to paint marks at the back or bottom of Delftware products to distinguish genuine Delft Blue from white and blue faience produced elsewhere.

These marks were usually painted at the back or bottom of Delft Blue pieces and contained the pottery owner’s initials or full name. A symbol associated with the pottery was also sometimes depicted.

You can find an overview of all genuine Delftware marks here .

This picture shows the marks of the remaining Delft Blue factory, De Porceleyne Fles . The little bottle is a reference to its name.

Delftware marks of the Royal Delft factory on the back of a Delftware plate

However, the competition outside Delft often falsified these marks, and only 1/3 of all Delft potters used marks. Therefore, experts must also study the object’s materials and decorations to ascertain it is genuine Delftware (see below).

6. How To Tell If Delft Blue Pottery Is Antique?

To verify if a Delft Blue piece is antique, experts carefully look at three different aspects:

  • The marks on the bottom of the Delft Blue pieces
  • The materials the Delft Blue piece is made of
  • The decorations on the Delft blue piece

Marks : The marks allowed the Delft potters to distinguish their Delft Blue faience from white and blue pottery made elsewhere. However, these marks were falsified because pottery from Delft was more expensive. Therefore, experts need to check if these marks are genuine and look for additional symbols, words, dates, or numbers to discover the pieces’ origins.

Materials: Delft Blue pottery was produced from three clays, usually beige, yellow, or light red. Antique Delft Blue pieces often have minor damage at the rims, allowing you to observe what kind of clay has been used.

Delft Blue can easily be distinguished from Chinese porcelain because Chinese porcelain is made from bright white clay. Small notches at the bottom of the piece are another feature to recognize Delft Blue because its production process caused these notches.

Decorations : Authentic antique Delft Blue is always handpainted, and these decorations, therefore, provide important information about the authenticity of an antique Delft Blue piece. Printing of decorations only became possible after 1750.

7. Where Does Delft Blue Pottery Come From?

The name Delft will not be familiar to everyone because many people don’t know that Delft is a small city in The Netherlands.

Delft Blue pottery comes from Delft, a small city in The Netherlands. However, Delft Blue is not a protected trade name, and Delft Blue has become synonymous with white and blue faience, independent of where it was produced.

You may wonder why Delft succeeded better than other Dutch cities in producing refined, luxurious tin-glazed earthenware. What was so special about this quaint little Dutch city that became spectacularly successful in pottery?

First and foremost, many of the most innovative potters that fled Antwerp after 1585 ended up in Delft. However, that raises the follow-up question of why these Antwerp potters moved to Delft rather than any other Dutch city.

Delft was ideally located for pottery bakers because it was next to the river Schie. This river was the source of (part of) the clay to produce Delft blue pottery. Ships also transported the additional clay types sourced abroad to Delft.

The river Schie also provided Delft with a convenient connection to Dutch sea harbors, like Delfshaven and Amsterdam, to export Delft Blue worldwide. At its peak at the end of the 17th century, the 33 potteries in Delft produced and shipped millions of Delft Blue tableware pieces yearly.

Delft blue pottery is still produced in Delft because one of the original 33 Delft blue potteries still exists. The Royal Delft company still operates a Delft Blue factory in Delft and produces high-quality Delft Blue tableware .

If you are interested in purchasing Delft Blue from Delft, make sure that the mark of the Royal Delft factory (see above) is on the bottom.

8. Where To Buy Delft Blue Pottery?

There are several possibilities to buy Delft Blue Pottery:

  • If you visit Delft, you can buy Delft blue pottery at Heinen Delfts Blauw or the Royal Delft Blue factory shop
  • If you visit Amsterdam, you can buy Delft Blue Pottery at Heinen Delft Blue in Amsterdam .
  • You can buy Delft Blue Pottery online at Heinen Delft Blue webshop
  • You can buy Delft Blue Pottery online at the Royal Delft webshop .

Of course, the best place to buy Delft Blue pottery is in Delft itself. There are several places in Delft where you can go shopping and buy your favorite Delftware.

There is a shop of Heinen Delfts Blauw at the market square in the city center of Delft. This shop has an extensive collection of Delft Blue pottery. Ask for the genuine Delft Blue because part of their merchandise comes from China. It would be a pity if you are a visitor from China, and you return home with a Delft Blue souvenir made in China…!

Another possibility for buying Delft Blue is at the Royal Delft Blue factory (see above). The Royal Delft factory has guided tours to see the Delft Blue production process yourself. You can buy their products after the guided tour in their shop.

That is an excellent combination if you want to understand how to produce Delft blue pottery and, perhaps, buy Delftware yourself.

The museum of the Royal Delft Blue factory is relatively small, but their shop is very impressive, much more impressive than those of Heinen Delft Blue. The Royal Delft factory shop is much nicer but more expensive.

The Nightwatch in Delft Blue

9. Is The Royal Delft Factory Museum Worth a Visit?

The Royal Delft Factory is the only remaining factory in Delft still producing Delft Blue pottery by hand. There is a lovely museum next to this factory, the Royal Delft Factory Museum, with exhibits about Delft Blue and its production in Delft.

Fully restored in 2022, the Royal Delft Factory Museum has become a unique combination of a museum and factory. Part of the tour takes you through the factory where Delft Blue pottery is manually produced during opening hours.

The Royal Delft Factory Museum is unique. I have written an extensive review about Royal Delft Factory Museum in another article on this website.

10. What is The Meaning of Delft?

The name Delft is derived from the Dutch word delven , meaning to delve or dig.

The name Delft was entirely appropriate because Delft was located next to a canal called Delf , called like this because it was delved.

It’s was all I had hoped for and I got my Tile. We also had an Afternoon Tea, to celebrate my Birthday. I loved the outside garden area where there were fascinating samples of different styles of architecture on display. I liked the filmed sections which were also informative. I confess that not everything they produce is to my taste but I bought a blue tile to add to my collection of Royal Doulton, Wedgwood etc. The prices are quite high but the items are hand painted and signed. The Tulipiere and a Visit to Delft

I had to have a tulipiere! Just had to. But the one that I wanted…the largest one in the Delft store, which looked like a tall pyramid and had probably over 50 flower spouts, was close to $50,000. So I had clearly lost my mind. But hold on…I’m starting in the middle of the story. Let me start at the beginning.

A couple of years ago, Robert and I joined some dear friends for a once in a lifetime European trip on a luxury barge (just 12 of us!) from Bruges to Amsterdam. Every port along the way was magical, and we so enjoyed the company, the fabulous food, and the days filled with touring places we had always wanted to see. However, despite the fact that we had been presented with an itinerary of our journey before we purchased the trip, the captain was very accommodating to the individual tastes of every traveler. Each night he asked us if we wanted to change our plans, visit a place that was not on our itinerary, or skip some of the pre-planned stops.

During one of these conversations, I remember hearing some talk about whether or not we should visit Delft, the city famous for its blue design porcelain. Well, in case you don’t know this about me, I’m a china fanatic. I have more beautiful dishes than I need, but, like my plants, I love them all – and many of them have been passed down to me by women in my family so they have a sentimental value as well.

In any case, when I heard other shipmates talking about whether or not we would stop in Delft, I said (out loud!), “Visiting Delft is the only reason that I agreed to this trip, so I’m stopping in Delft no matter what anyone else does.” (My husband cringed.) Ok. I might have exaggerated a little bit. But the general sentiment was quite true. I really wanted to visit the Delft porcelain factory AND GIFT SHOP!!!

And so, I got my way. Don’t judge. I know I’m spoiled. (I don’t think my shipmates minded too much!) It was the highlight of my trip!

Delft porcelain has a long and glorious history. Too much for me to elaborate here. Suffice to say that the production of Delft porcelain began in the 1500’s and continues today. By the 1800’s Delftware porcelain, which was decorated in blue on a white background, was very popular among the Dutch, and soon gained world wide fame. You might like to check out the Delft website to see all the gorgeous examples of Delft for sale. I began browsing the website before I wrote this today, and it really delayed my start time. BUT I did NOT buy anything!!!

https://www.royaldelft.com/en_gb/

The Delft Porcelain Factory offers a Delft Museum, a Delft Factory Tour, and the most exquisite Gift Shop. It was in the museum that I saw the pyramid tulipiere, and I was smitten.

A tulipiere is a vase, for tulips (or any flower really) with multiple spouts for the flowers. There are many shapes for tulipieres, round, box-like, flat, -- but you can’t top the pyramid tulipiere.

Once we got to the gift shop, and I saw the price, I knew it wasn’t going to happen. It was sooo much money, that I didn’t feel bad about not being able to purchase it…but I still couldn’t leave without some kind of tulipiere.

There are two parts to the gift shop – one side has the hand painted porcelain, very pricey, and of course, gorgeous. The other side has mass produced pieces, probably not hand painted, but still looking very Delft-y. That’s the tulipiere that I got. The mass produced Delft-y looking kind. And I love it!!!! I keep it on my table all the time, and when I have special occasions, I buy fresh tulips.

When spring rolls around again, I am looking forward to using it for my own tulips. Even in Delft land, I’m thinking about my garden.
