40 Years Ago: Dire Straits Ramps Up on ‘Love Over Gold’

Love Over Gold was something of a calm before the storm for Dire Straits .

Released on Sept. 24, 1982, the LP burnished their reputation as one of mainstream rock's leading musos, three years before the multiplatinum Brothers in Arms transformed Dire Straits into superstars.

"There was a great deal of space in the music on this album," bassist and co-founder John Illsley wrote in his memoir My Life in Dire Straits . "It was truly a collaborative effort. ... It was certainly a very different studio undertaking to anything we had experienced up to then, and all the more satisfying for that."

Love Over Gold was marked by its five lengthy tracks – the shortest, the peppy and tongue-in-cheek "Industrial Disease," came in at 5:50. Particularly noteworthy was "Telegraph Road," an intricately composed and arranged piece that frontman Mark Knopfler had begun working up at sound checks during Dire Straits' Making Movies world tour.

The final version is more than 14 minutes long, as Dire Straits weave an epic tale inspired by traveling on the titular roadway (also known as U.S. 24) that stretches from Michigan to Colorado, at the same time Knopfler was reading the Knut Hamsun novel Growth of the Soil .

"He actually wrote it by-by-bit when we were on the road," keyboardist Alan Clark, who made his recording debut with the band on Love Over Gold , told UCR in 2014 . "At every soundcheck for every gig afterwards, [Knopfler] and I would get together and we'd sort of formulate the next bit of the song. He'd written where we'd gotten up to, and we would then start making it work between us with the piano part and his [guitar] part – and that's how the song was built up."

Listen to Dire Straits' 'Telegraph Road'

Illsley, meanwhile, noted that "Telegraph Road" actually had to be recorded in two parts because drummer Pick Withers' snare would lose tension along the way. The two parts were sliced together by engineer Neil Dorfsman during sessions at the Power Station in New York.

"Private Investigations," which became the first single from Love Over Gold , was also developed during the Making Movies tour, while other tracks were eventually excised and landed elsewhere: "Private Dancer" on Tina Turner 's 1984 comeback album of the same name, and "The Way It Always Starts" for Knopfler's soundtrack to the 1983 film Local Hero , with vocals by Gerry Rafferty .

Love Over Gold also marked Knopfler's first outing as Dire Straits' producer after working previously with Muff Winwood, Barry Beckett and Jerry Wexler, and Jimmy Iovine. "He had very clear ideas about the sound and shape of the music he wanted the band to achieve," Illsley wrote.

Knopfler hand-picked Dorfsman, who had worked with him on Local Hero . Dorfsman was an "amusing man, too," according to Illsley, "and he made all the hard work an absolute delight to look forward to each morning."

Love Over Gold gave Dire Straits its first No. 1 album in the U.K., where it was also certified double-platinum. "Private Investigations" was a No. 2 hit in the U.K. as well. The album's U.S performance was a bit disappointing, however: Love Over Gold was certified gold and shared a No. 19 peak with Making Movies on the Billboard 200. But that was lower than the previous two albums, so Dire Straits elected not to tour North America to support the album.

This also proved to be Withers' last LP with Dire Straits. He departed after the sessions and was initially replaced by Terry Williams of Rockpile. The album's homeland success, however, netted Dire Straits its first Best British Group honors at the 1983 Brit Awards, setting the stage for even greater triumphs to come.

Former Dire Straits Members Unite as ‘Dire Straits Legacy’ for U.S. Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

As Mark Knopfler proved this year by not even showing up  when his band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Dire Straits are never, ever getting back together. However, that’s not stopping past members, including keyboardist Alan Clark, percussionist Danny Cummings, saxophonist Mel Collins and guitarist Phil Palmer, from hitting the road in late September for a tour under the banner DSL Dire Straits Legacy. The group will be joined by Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone and the Buggles’ Trevor Horn on bass along with Marco Caviglia on vocals and Primiano DiBiase on keyboards.

“The DSL Dire Straits Legacy project was born from our love and respect for the music of Dire Straits, and to bring the music to fans who have been starved of hearing it played live by the musicians who made it, for far too long,” Clark and Collins said in a statement. “Now, after many requests, we’re coming to the US! Along with all the Dire Straits hits, we’ll also be playing one or two songs from our new album 3 Chord Trick , and a couple of other tunes we’ve been involved with. See you there!”

Former members of Dire Straits have toured together in recent years under various names, including the Straits, but this is the first time they’ve come to North America. Their South American tour earlier in the year was packed with Dire Straits classics like “Walk of Life,” “Money For Nothing” and “Romeo & Juliet.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

None of this has sat well with bassist John Illsley, the only member of Dire Straits besides Knopfler to endure through every incarnation of the group.   “I said to them, ‘If you’re going to do it, will you please call it something else,'” he told Rolling Stone last year , referring to their incarnation as the Straits. “‘It would be like some people coming together and calling themselves the Stones or the Floyd. You can’t really do that. You were members of the band for a while, but you don’t own the name. You have no ownership. Can you please it call it something else? Call it what it is, which is basically a tribute act.’ There’s a lot of tribute acts. That’s what happens when there’s a vacuum. You just have to accept that, but I found it very difficult. It didn’t last very long.”

Alex jones will sell off infowars to help pay $1.5 billion he owes to sandy hook families, 'house of the dragon' season 2 repeats same thrills — and mistakes — as season 1, phish fan banned from sphere for taking bong rip: ‘no regrets’.

It’s unclear if Illsley is satisfied now that they are called DSL Dire Straits Legacy, but the addition of Horn to the lineup does pose some intriguing questions regarding the setlist, especially since they pledged to play “a couple of other tunes we’ve been involved with.” As the frontman of the Buggles, Horn was the lead vocalist on their classic “Video Killed The Radio Star.” He also fronted Yes for their 1980 LP Drama . And with Ferrone in the lineup, there could potentially be a show that features Tom Petty’s “You Wreck Me,” Yes’ “Machine Messiah” and “Video Killed The Radio Star” in addition to all the Dire Straits tunes. As weird as that sounds, we now live in a world where Vince Gill is in the Eagles and Neil Finn is touring with Fleetwood Mac .

As Knopfler and Illsley would be the first to point out, many members of DSL Dire Straits Legacy had very brief tenures in Dire Straits: Mel Collins, best known for his work in King Crimson, didn’t play on any studio albums and was only around for the 1982/83 Love Over Gold tour. Danny Cummings and Phil Palmer only contributed to 1991’s On Every Street and its supporting tour. Alan Clark had, by far, the longest stint in the Dire Straits, playing with them from 1980 until the final show in 1992.

With four and a half decades of hindsight, Communique (released 6/5/79) now more than ever stands as the great lost Dire Straits album. In part, that’s because, except for “Lady Writer,” the overly obvious evocation of the modern update of country blues that dominated its predecessor, the prevailing mood is one of abiding languor.

Consequently, the LP’s charms are somewhat difficult to grasp. The deceptively torpid atmosphere is an undercurrent throughout the album, arising most pervasively (and fittingly) on the ever-so-hazy closer, “Follow Me Home.” It quite probably proceeded directly from its recording locale: the pastels in Geoff Halpin’s front cover illustration appropriately evoke the tropics of Compass Point Studios in Nassau, the Bahamas. The cover art was yet another point of criticism/comparison between this album and its predecessor.

As if in the overt embrace of the cinematic quality within in his best combinations of words and music, chief songwriter and guitarist of Dire Straits Mark Knopfler invokes the muse with his instrument to open “Once Upon A Time in the West” (the title of a 1968 spaghetti western directed by Sergio Leone). The languid mumble of Knopfler’s vocal delivery only enhances the prevailing pace of the track, a tempo that nevertheless sets off in stark relief how instantly recognizable is his sinuous guitar work.

Likewise, the economy of Knopfler’s supporting cast—sibling guitarist David, bassist John Illsley (a stalwart comrade throughout the group’s existence), and drummer Pick Withers—offsets the literacy in the narratives of “Where Do You Think You’re Going.” The quartet is too genteel to qualify as a bar band. Still, with the emotional expressions of the material couched in deep reflection, the earthy undercurrents in the musicianship complement such tunes as the wry title track, where co-producer Barry Beckett plays a jaunty piano.

Meanwhile, character portraits like that of the “Single Handed Sailor,” “Angel of Mercy” and “Portobello Belle” are the stuff of movie treatments waiting to be developed (the latter a swinging contemporary take on ageless traditional tunes). Notwithstanding its brisk forward motion, the aforementioned cull of a single recounting a media interview interrupts the pervasive mood of  Communique  generated by the otherwise quiet percolation of the foursome.

It took Dire Straits five months to become a hit after the 1979 breakthrough wrought by “Sultans of Swing.” Consequently, that lapse found the ensemble recording its sophomore album later in the same year as its debut, which was supervised by Muff Winwood (brother of Steve). Produced by Jerry Wexler and Beckett, veterans of Muscle Shoals Sound Studio,  Communique  would be the last Dire Straits album to feature the group as a quartet.

The younger brother Knopfler departed shortly after sessions began for the third album that would become  Making Movies.  Replaced for the duration of the project by Roy Bittan, the keyboardist for Springsteen’s E Streeters, this abrupt transition subsequently led to more emphasis on production than ensemble interaction for future Straits projects like  Love Over Gold  and the 1985 blockbuster that was  Brothers In Arms .

The latter’s success was largely courtesy of the popularity of “Money for Nothing” (MTV-wise and otherwise); the title was the first to outsell its vinyl counterpart in the compact disc format (with a million tally). That breakthrough in technology was emblematic of Mark Knopfler’s abiding interest in excellent sound as an indispensable component of his records.

Such was his desire in that regard that expert remastering of the entire Dire Straits’ studio work took place in 1996; like its counterparts,  Communique  was issued sans any scholarly historical analysis, but given the immersive nature of the music itself, any such academic addenda would’ve been superfluous.

The pristine audio of the longplayer is certainly not the only reason to listen to it (or remember) it, but it certainly renders vivid the virtues of Mark’s songwriting and how the instrumental action and production of  Communique  brought his compositions to life. The results were so picturesque, they still carry a deep resonance forty-five years later.
