Jason Isbell & Father John Misty to Co-Headline Summer Tour

Rock and witty banter will abound on the road with Jason Isbell and Father John Misty this summer, as the artists have just announced they'll be touring together.

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit

Rock, wry humor and cutting stage banter will abound on the road with Jason Isbell and Father John Misty this summer, as the artists have just announced that the’re co-headlining a tour together.

Kicking off in San Diego on June 6, Isbell and his band, the 400 Unit — which includes country singer/songwriter  Amanda Shires on fiddle — and Father John Misty will lap the country over the course of three weeks, with Jade Bird and Erin Rae supporting for select shows.

Jason Isbell On His 'A Star Is Born' Song, Texting With Bradley Cooper & How Nashville Is…

The tour comes after a lucrative year for both artists — and a song that had one writing about the other. “Mr. Tillman,” a track off his 2018 album  God’s Favorite Customer,  had Father John Misty running into Isbell at a hotel. (Isbell had a good sense of humor about it, clearly.)  God’s Favorite Customer peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard 200, and Isbell won two Grammys at the 2018 awards (one for best American album for 2017’s The Nashville Sound and another for best American roots song for its single, “If We Were Vampires”).

Father John Misty is an indie rock singer-songwriter hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, U.S who was born on the 3rd of May 1981. Since his solo debut in 2004, he has released 10 studio albums and has also performed as the drummer for both Saxon Shore and Fleet Foxes.

Father John Misty was born Joshua Tillman to an evangelical Christian family in Rockville, Maryland. Despite being a “pretty aimless kid”, in his words, from a young age Tillman was taken with the idea of being a performer. However, since secular music was forbidden in his house, the closest thing to it that he could aspire to be was a pastor, which was his ambition until the age of 17. That was the age he was at when his parents allowed him to listen to secular music that had a “spiritual theme”, leading him to discover albums like Bob Dylan’s “Slow Train Coming”, which completely changed his life.

Tillman was already musical, having learnt the drums as a child, and then picked up the guitar at 12. Once he was able to listen to the albums that influenced him most he began to write songs, and then at the age of 21 he moved from his native Maryland, to Seattle, Washington in 2002. One of his first demos found its way to Seattle based singer-Damien Jurado, who was so impressed that by the age of 22, Tillman was opening for him on tour. After extensive touring and distributing his demos at shows for free, independent label Fargo Records released Tillman’s first solo album “Minor Works” in 2006, along with his albums “I Will Return” and “Long May You Run” in the same year as a double disk set.

In 2007, another album of Tillman’s was released called “Cancer and Delirium”, meaning that Tillman was an artist who’d released four studio albums of entirely original material in two years. For such a prolific artist, it’s a testament to his creative spirit and lack of ego that he’d then join Fleet Foxes the following year as their drummer, without any involvement in their writing process. Despite him touring with the band extensively, his solo albums still got him signed to Western Vinyl in 2009 where another two albums of his were released the same year. He stayed touring with Fleet Foxes until 2012, when he played his last show with them, changed his stage name from J. Tillman to Father John Misty and made a break for the mainstream.

Since then he’s become something of a songwriter’s songwriter, still releasing stellar solo albums, touring the world to ever increasing crowd sizes and working with everyone from rapper Kid Cudi to Parks and Recreation actress Aubrey Plaza. He’s the kind of artist that could have found success whenever he started, and we should be thankful that we’re around to see his prime. Highly recommended.

Live reviews

Thursday February 26th. Village Underground. Father John Misty. It’s the three amigos and the twin towers tonight. After the usual pre gig banter revolving around music and football it’s off to a sold out Village Underground. The venue is essentially a long thin railway tunnel and by the time we get in the place is heaving with tall thin beardy blokes and we take a perch at the back on the elevated section.

Josh Tillman latterly the drummer of the Fleet Foxes or the ooeeaaah band as I called them has ventured on his own under the Father John Misty moniker with two fine albums after what could politely be described as a number of dirgey ones under his own name.

This new character and that’s what it is, is a compete contrast to the introverted hairy drummer hiding at the back of the stage behind his kit. He has metamorphosed into an extravagant front man who dances maniacally all over the stage and into the crowd in something of a cross between Basil Fawlty, Jarvis Cocker and a giraffe.

His humour shines through the whole set not just in his clever lyrical word play but the between song banter too. This can often be awkward with other performers but he handles hecklers and particularly a crowd surfer with equal disdain. With the latter commenting that when he wrote Chateau Lobby in C for two virgins he hadn’t envisaged a tall man with a beard in a leather jacket on someone’s shoulders coming toward him.

He makes ironic comments around this greatest hits set but with one night already sold out in Shepherds Bush later this year a second one added his new found appeal cannot be questioned.

It’s a good mix of songs from both albums and his voice shines through even on the electric numbers. My personal favourites the Richard Thompsonesque ‘I’m writing a Novel’ and the thrashy ‘Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings’ stand out but special mentions for ‘Only Son of the Ladiesman’ and ‘Strange Encounter’ from the new album. It’s a tight six piece band with the excellent David Vandervelde (check out his album ‘Waiting for the Sunrise’) on guitar.

A great night for an artist whose star is starting to shine in his own right.

Imagine standing 15 feet from the gloriously bearded Josh Tillman as he tells the crowd about how humanity has forgone the beautiful unicorn. He makes wisecracks about the crowd, who's clearly there to see the next act at the music festival, but they still eat it all up and fall in love with his soulful singing, with his sassy personality, with him. Then he kisses the unicorn. The crowd goes wild. That was Lollapalooza 2013. If that's Father John Misty at a music festival, I'd love to see what he can do when he has the place to himself. Josh Tillman, originally of Fleet Foxes fame, is constantly satirizing modern music in his live performances, but his music is still undeniably spectacular - as good if not better and more heartfelt than that of his albums. His performance style can get a little intense at times (for example, at Lolla, he wrapped his microphone cord around his body, singing "someone's gotta help me dig" on "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings." Several audience members were visibly shaken by his performance, as you could see from the baffled looks of their faces on the jumbo screen). Regardless of his occasionally overzealous tactics for crowd entertainment, or for his own, Father John Misty has an impressive stage presence, better than any act I've ever seen live. Tillman's constant witticism, blatant disregard for rules (drinking and having a smoke right on stage) and overall couldn't-care-less attitude make for an extraordinarily entertaining show, one that's certainly not to be missed by any fan of folk and fun.

After an extremely creepy intro with gurgled vocals over the PA and a stage bathed in blood red, the show opened with the aforementioned “Everyman Needs a Companion”. A crowd, still stunned by the sword-wielding duo Tess & Dave, were a little slow getting to their feet, but when Tillman suggested everyone stand, that’s just what they did. It was almost dizzying to look up at the rows of fans stacked above us in the opera house. It was immediately evident the show would be much different than the solo, acoustic one I saw at the Bluebird Theater in 2012. As the swirling lights came to a halt, and “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” was performed by mere shadows, there was a level of professionalism that was absent at that last show. It went beyond just production value; the superior sound was one thing, but the way he held himself was most impressive. The first half of the set was heavy on Fear Fun material (the same songs he performed four years ago) but this time the songs were able to breathe because they weren’t drown in the obnoxious, condescending banter we were subjugated to when he opened for Youth Lagoon. The Father John Misty persona was still in full effect as he danced around like a lounge lizard, before falling to his knees during “When You’re Smiling and Astride Me”, but he played the part with real purpose and he was able to do so without hurling insults at the crowd. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2016/04/10/father-john-misty-ellie-caulkins-04-09-16/#sthash.cSmkjgkG.dpuf

FJM provides one of the best shows I've ever had the pleasure of attending. The stage is filled, the crowd is packed and the music is a religious experience.

The gig itself was great. The venue was relaxed and open with food provided (but why you'd bother I don't know...). I've heard it took upwards of two hours to get served for a pizza there, though I mean, really, what did you expect? Waiter service? If you're at a concert to sample the cuisine you need to reconsider your choices imo.

Opening for FJM were The Orielles, Hookworms and Edwyn Collins. The first two were great - Hookworms especially (Check out their track 'Negative Space' if you haven't heard of them), and Edwyn Collins was cool too, with James Kirk (if I'm not mistaken the original guitarist from Orange Juice) nigh-on stealing the show with his solo parts.

Not to be outdone, Josh followed James with the best show I've seen him do ever. Accompanied by the usual supsects (no, not the covers band), FJM provided beautiful guitars and magical vocals with an exceptional group of musicians behind him.

Ultimately it was an amazing gig that I can't have enjoyed any more. To those that I've seen moaning about food queues, get over yourselves. To those moaning about people talking during sets, move away from the fringes of the crowd into the middle sections, where there was nothing but singing. To those moaning about people smoking at an outdoor gig; stop.

My partner and I caught FJM's very first show in Montreal at Le Petit Campus in.... 2012 I believe it was?

A tiny bar (100 capacity, if that!), tucked away on top of a much bigger one, it was an intimate show to say the least. He even played drums for his opening act, Har Mar Superstar.

When he got on, he was pretty disheveled, wearing a tan/brownish wife-beater and punctuating his set with witty repartees - chatting with the audience and largely being quite clever and quick... albeit a very dry and caustic.

He went through the entirety of Fear Fun, and finished with Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings. He shredded his way through the song, distorting it and growling in the mic as if he did not very much enjoy playing his mega-single and was uncomfortable with the fact that fame was just around the corner.

It was a very human show, and we walked away thinking how we had just caught him at the right time, before the whole Misty bubble blew up. We were right: the next gig in Montreal was as opener for the Walkmen at the Corona Theatre (much, much bigger venue) and he was super polished... as if he'd made peace with his newfound fame.

We've seen him 4-5 times now. We'd love to catch him again in London!

some people in the audience had maybe never been to a show before. some people in the audience maybe didn't know that massey hall is a beautiful, historic venue that deserves their respect.

i had to watch the show through cell phone screens (of which he pocketed an especially intrusive one) and struggle to hear the man, whom i had paid money to hear, over the girls in front of me screaming WOO and I LOVE YOU! at any serene, quiet moment. he commented on this ("you have bad timing") when someone screamed WOO-YEAH!!! after the lyric "they put me to work in a government camp".

outside of this yes, father john misty is a gifted entertainer. the updated arrangements of songs from FEAR FUN were great and the NIN cover during the encore was a very awesome surprise. hopefully all the music festival patrons he's recently won over will find some other flavour of the week to hop onto and we'll get our charismatic cult leader back on the next tour.

PS. bonus points for growing his hair and beard out again.

Caught him at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with an entire Los Angeles Philharmonic to back him up. Honestly wasn't very impressed.

He didn't really even greet the audience until four songs in. His stage performance is reminiscent a lurpy, Willy Wonka-esque, even more spastic impression of Elaine from Seinfeld.

You'd expect a mostly drab singer with good relatable lyrics to emphasize the volume of his own vocals, but instead we heard a muffled beard practice its own ventriloquism with a human dummy.

He mentioned toward the end of the set that he wouldn't be performing an encore and even made fun of the concept of leaving the stage only return minutes later.

But then he did it anyway only after we had already left our seats and the 15 year old Disney employees guarded the doors from any returning patrons with the useless programs they continually spent the entire evening trying to shove down our throats.

What a joke.

Cool looking venue though.

Father John Misty Kicks Off Summer 2022 Tour at Red Rocks With Colorado Symphony

  • By Ryan Dillon

Father John Misty’s music was built to be enjoyed around nature as his soft croons just sound prolific when dabbling in the outdoors, so it was fitting that the artist formerly known as J Tillman kicked off his 2022 tour at Red Rocks. The current tour is in support of the artist’s latest release Chloë and the Next 20th Century , an album that mixes Misty’s signature take on folk with classic classical style production.

Father John Misty has always been one for experimenting with his sound. Whether it is his earlier works as J.Tillman, the down-trotted bluesman, or his dive into the folk-rock world with his 2015 release I Love You, Honeybear , Misty isn’t afraid to go head first into a concept album. That’s exactly what he did on 2022’s Chloë and the Next 20th Century, a combination of all of his past work with hints of classic jazz and dive bar-style piano tunes.

Misty is also taking a note from the Chopin era with his stage design, minimalist and full of instruments. Misty was joined by a full orchestra at Red Rocks to bring his new sound to life. The Colorado Symphony added that extra element to separate this tour from Misty’s past outings. He performed almost all of his 2022 album along with classics from past releases. Hits like “Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)” got their time in the spotlight but Misty really made the most out of having a full orchestra there to bring the concept of Chloë and the Next 20th Century to life.

Nets check one box with Jordi Fernández hire, but their immediate future remains hazy

Brooklyn introduced its new coach on wednesday.

jordi-fernandez-nets-g.jpg

NEW YORK -- Jordi Fernández got his start in the NBA in 2009 when Mike Brown hired him as a player development coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers . Fifteen years later, after adding assistant and head coaching experience in the G League and international competition to his resumé, the Brooklyn Nets hired him off of Brown's staff in Sacramento. At his introductory press conference at their training facility on Wednesday, the Nets' new head coach called Brown "my American basketball father" and Sergio Scariolo, with whom Fernández won a gold medal as an assistant coach of the Spanish national team at the 2019 FIBA World Cup, as "my European basketball father."

Fernández, a first-time NBA head coach, thanked Brown, Scariolo and his other mentors: Byron Scott, David Blatt and Tyronn Lue with the Cavaliers, Steve Hetzel with the Canton Charge, Michael Malone with the Denver Nuggets . (Hetzel left the Portland Trail Blazers to join him in Brooklyn, per ESPN .) He said that he "would not be here without Canada Basketball," for whom he served as head coach last summer when they won bronze at the World Cup and qualified for the Olympics.

As a get-to-know-you session for Brooklyn's fan base, the press conference was effective. Fernández talked about the pride he takes in representing "Spanish basketball, Catalan basketball and the basketball of my hometown," i.e. Barcelona, which he described as "probably one of the best basketball cities in Europe and I would say in the world."

As a primer for the Nets' offseason, though, Wednesday's festivities were less enlightening. After finishing 32-50 and 11th in the East, without a lottery pick to show for it -- Brooklyn owes its pick to the Houston Rockets as a result of its 2021 trade for James Harden -- the franchise's near-term outlook is hazy. Fernández repeatedly said he's excited about the youth of the team and the opportunity to develop players. He also said that the Nets' "flexibility" and "resources" give them "a perfect recipe for success."

The most notable comments, roster-wise, were the ones that both Fernández and general manager Sean Marks made about free-agent-to-be Nicolas Claxton .

"Nic is the No. 1 priority for us," Marks said. "There's no doubt about that. We hope he's a Net for a very long time. We hope we can continue to build around him and build with him and so forth. I think it's been fun to watch Nic develop from from his days at Georgia coming all the way through here. I think he's scratched the surface on who he could end up being one day."

Claxton, drafted No. 31 in 2019, became Brooklyn's full-time starting center in 2022-23. Defensively, he's one of the most versatile big men in the NBA . The 25-year-old is not the only player on this season's roster approaching free agency -- Dennis Smith Jr. , Lonnie Walker IV and Trendon Watford will all hit the market -- but he is by far the most significant for the Nets' future.

"I believe he'll be Defensive Player of the Year," Fernández said.

Fernández praised Claxton's ability to put pressure on the rim as a roll man, but emphasized that he can also be an offensive hub with his dribble-handoff game. Fernández spent the last few years with the Kings , whose offense runs through big man Domantas Sabonis , and it sounds like he wants to generate ball and body movement in similar ways in Brooklyn.

"When everybody touches the ball and everybody's involved, everybody's happier," Fernández said. "You're harder to guard because you're not that predictable [compared to] just playing pick-and-roll. So [Claxton] fits perfectly what we want to do moving forward."

'He could do various different pathways'

Will Marks' front office make a blockbuster trade this summer? Will Cam Thomas have a 29.6% usage rate again next season? Will veterans Dorian Finney-Smith and Dennis Schroder be back? Beyond what happens with Claxton, there are all sorts of variables here. Neither Marks nor Fernández made the answers to these questions obvious, nor did they gave any indication that there's pressure for the team to a big, immediate leap.

Fernández said that the Nets will be "process-oriented" and that it's on him and his staff to develop their returning young players. "Winning is extremely important, but the way we want to do it, like, we want to sustain success and we want to do it in the long run," Fernández said. Marks said that he and Fernáandez were "brutally upfront with each other" when discussing players throughout the hiring process, and the two are "in complete alignment with how we're going to continue to build this thing and who we're going to build with." Part of the appeal of this particular candidate, though, was that he profiled as someone who could coach teams with varying levels of experience and talent.

"I think there's context around every hire that's made, and it suits maybe the roster better than others at certain times, where you are on your timeline," Marks said. "I think something that separates Jordi from a lot of the candidates [was] that we found that he could look at a developmental roster, he could do various different pathways. I mean, he's coached stars before. I mean, he's been the director of [player] development before."

Marks added that Fernández has "worn many hats, and I think there's no roster that he's not going to be able to get the respect of those guys."

For now, Marks said, the team is focused on the draft, free agency and "to be quite frank, seeing how all of these playoffs transpire, because that will dictate, sort of, the direction of a lot of the teams and the league landscape." Brooklyn does not have any first- or second-round picks in the upcoming draft, but that could change.

"If there's a guy that you like, you've got to have the conviction to go after it and go after them," Marks said.

Marks pointed to the rebuilding process that put the Nets in a position to sign Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in the summer of 2019, saying that it's possible to "build quicker than in some other markets" because star players see Brooklyn as a destination. At the same time, he said, "Let's not lose sight of developing our own and having success and continuing to draft well." Marks didn't plead for patience or make any promises, other than saying fans should expect the team to play with a high level of competitiveness.

"The fans got behind a group, early days here, that they weren't household names but they came and they brought it every single night," Marks said. "I think that's important. Fans got behind the stars as well. We can take a variety of different pathways. We have to be prudent, patient, systematic with who we go after, when we go after them and just make sure we do it the right way."

Nets supportive of Fernández's Olympic plans

Fernández said he plans to "get to know everybody" right away, from the players to the front office, the performance staff, the medical staff and people who work on the business side. Building relationships will be trickier than it might be for other new hires, though, because he has another job this summer: coaching Canada's national team at the Paris Olympics.

"The challenge will be to be extremely organized," Fernández said. "I think the opportunity that I have in front of me will make myself better and the organization better. Being able to coach in the Olympics is a dream come true."

Fernández thanked Marks and Tsai for allowing him to do it despite his new responsibilities. Last summer, Fernández got the gig because Nick Nurse, having been hired by the Philadelphia 76ers , decided that his new NBA team needed his full attention.

"Right now we have time to organize our summer, start working, then I'm going to have six weeks to work on the tournament and then be back here right around before mid-August," Fernández said.

Marks said that there will need to be "communication back and forth" with Fernández, and that, "for us, it's going to be a matter of making sure our summer program is an incredibly robust one." He said that Fernández will be "in alignment" with the players' individual development programs "the whole summer," even when he's not physically present in Brooklyn.

"I would never take the opportunity to play for or coach a national team away from anybody," Marks said. "I think that's a chance of a lifetime to go and do that. Especially on that stage, right? When you get to go to the Olympics, that's very rare. And the more opportunities Jordi has behind the clipboard, the better."

Simmons' health is 'paramount'

Ben Simmons , who had back surgery in March and played in only 15 games this season (and only 57 since the Nets acquired him during the 2021-22 season), is rehabbing in Miami, per Marks.

"All signs point towards him being available for the start of next season," Marks said. "With Ben, it's very unfortunate. We looked like we were a completely different team when Ben was healthy out there. So it's paramount that we get him back and we get him healthy and I think Ben wants it just as much if not more than anybody else."

Dariq Whitehead , who had surgery on his shin in January, "should be available in summer league," Marks said. Picked No. 22 by Brooklyn in the first round of last year's draft, Whitehead missed the entirety of the 2023-24 season.

Whitehead was at the Nets' training facility on Wednesday, as was Cam Johnson.
