What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

» Learn more: Should you insure your cruise?

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

» Learn more: How annual (multi-trip) travel insurance works

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.

Some credit cards offer trip cancellation and rental car insurance if you use the card to book the trip or car.

When you book a trip with your credit card, depending on the card you use, you may already receive trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

If you don’t know which provider to go with, it makes sense to browse a list of plans on a travel insurance comparison site. These online marketplaces will often include plans from the best travel insurance companies along with customer reviews.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.

It's already included in your credit card.

You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.

» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

Unpredictability is one of the mind-opening joys of travel, but travel insurance should contain no surprises. The time you spend to understand your options will be well worth the peace of mind as you embark on your next adventure.

Whether you’re seeking a single or a long-term policy, each travel insurance option offers different strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right policy depends on your trip needs, your budget and how important various benefits are to you.

While fishing is automatically covered under all our policies, sports equipment can be expensive, so if you’re travelling with yours it’s important that it’s fully insured. All our policies include cover for valuables, including sports equipment, so make sure you choose the right level of cover for your needs. If your fishing equipment is particularly expensive, you can even add extended valuables cover to your policy, which covers up to £1,000 per item – see our  policy wordings  for more details.

Trip Insurance

Highly recommended.

We strongly recommend purchasing Travel Insurance. We recommend IMG Signature Travel Insurance. Plans can include coverage for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Emergency Medical and Emergency Evacuation/Repatriation, Trip Delay, Baggage Delay, and more. During post-Covid, flight delays and other issues continue to persist. As a result, many lodges can no longer roll over your dates for a future trip. For this reason, purchasing trip cancellation insurance is now more important than ever. Very Important:  If you purchase Signature Travel Insurance within 20 days of your initial deposit, it can cover pre-existing medical conditions as long as you are fit to travel at the time of purchase. While a Signature Travel Insurance policy can be purchased at any time, purchasing a policy within 20 days of making your initial trip deposit gives you the most comprehensive range of policy options, including Cancel for Any Reason.

How is Fishing Insurance different?

Despite fishing being generally considered as a safe sport that is enjoyed by people of all ages, there are certain risks associated with it.

Incidents such as minor burns from overhead electric power lines or drowning following a slip or fall have been reported, therefore insurance is always recommended for your fishing activities.

Compare the Best International Travel Insurance Companies

As a general rule, the most important coverage to have in a foreign country is travel medical insurance , as most US health insurance policies don't cover you while you're abroad. Without travel medical coverage, a medical emergency in a foreign country can cost you. You'll want trip cancellation and interruption coverage if your trip is particularly expensive. How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

You should pay attention to any limitations regarding covered cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and adventure activities. For example, if you're worried you may have to cancel a trip for work reasons, ensure that you've worked at your company long enough to qualify for cancellation coverage, as that is a condition with some insurers. You should also see if your destination has any travel advisories, as that can affect your policy.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

Trip Insurance During Covid-19

Worried about COVID-19 messing up your travel plans and costing you money? Your normal insurance may not cover it -  while they may cover illness and emergency evacuations, the coronavirus pandemic does not qualify criteria unless you yourself have been diagnosed with the virus. So what's the solution? Independent travel insurance.

Benefits of independent insurance:

  • You can purchase a plan for any kind of trip
  • Your plan covers many different aspects of your travel, from the flights and hotel stays to the prepaid, nonrefundable tours and excursions.
  • There’s a wide array of policies available, from comprehensive coverage to plans that offer coverage for specific travel-related concerns.
  • The coverage you'll receive is far more comprehensive than the protection included with your credit card.
  • Comprehensive independent travel insurance typically covers up to ten travelers - so it is a great option for groups.
  • Your Cruise Planners Travel Advisor can help you find and book the best travel insurance policy for you, so you don't have to deal with any of the stress!

Top 10 reasons why experienced travelers choose Travel Insurance from Allianz Global Assistance :

  • Life is unpredictable. Some trips need to be canceled. With travel insurance, you don’t necessarily have to pay for a trip you are unable to take. Instead, enjoy more confidence knowing that you stay a step ahead of unpredictable situations before and during your trip.
  • Don’t let sickness stop you. From coughs in the crowds to exotic eats that don’t agree with your stomach, sick happens. It’s less scary to be sick with travel insurance by your side to help you through these troubles.
  • Your health insurance has its limits . When you travel outside the U.S., you may be leaving your health insurance at home. Many U.S. plans (including Medicare and Medicaid) don’t cover international travel. Why risk it when a medical evacuation can cost $50,000+?
  • Forgot your medication? Lost or forgotten medication can set off an alarm when you’re far from home. Let travel insurance help you locate a pharmacy to purchase a new Rx. It’s always nerve-wracking when something goes wrong. But when you’re in a foreign country, you don’t want to face any kind of crisis alone.
  • Lost luggage can leave you in a lurch. Allianz Global Assistance provides benefits that can help you replace needed items if your bags are delayed, damaged, or stolen while you’re away. With reimbursement for your trip essentials, you can still suit up for wherever your journey takes you next.
  • The plan crumbles. If a travel supplier ceases operations, you may not get a refund for the money you fronted for a cruise, flight, or tour. Travel insurance is in place so you’re less likely to pay for an experience you’ll never have.
  • You don’t want the credit (voucher). Airlines aren’t required to refund a ticket in the event of an emergency. In fact, your carrier can choose to offer a credit voucher toward future travel instead of cash in pocket. With travel insurance, you have more control over your Plan B.
  • Speaking of change of plans... Flight delays can add up. Beyond being annoying, prolonged delays can cause you to accrue expenses while you wait, or worse, miss a connection. With travel insurance, a covered travel delay can mean cash for rebooking fees, meals, and accommodations.
  • Your credit card may not cover you. Some travelers opt-out of travel insurance, thinking credit card coverage would suffice in a crunch. Truth is, even if you have this free coverage benefit, it won’t be as extensive as a separate travel insurance plan.
  • Tap into smart travel tools. Allianz Global Assistance provides travelers with a simple-to-use tool that pairs perfectly with wanderlust. Download the TravelSmart™ app for free on the AppStore and GooglePlay to view your policy on the go, file a claim, track your flight in real-time, and get one-touch emergency assistance. All this and more is at your fingertips. Take a look.

Visit El Golfo de Santa Clara on the Sea of Cortez

  • Last Updated: April 13, 2023 by Roxanna Brock McDade
  • Categories:
  • Destinations , El Golfo de Santa Clara

El Golfo de Santa Clara, called El Golfo , is a small, peaceful fishing village located just 60 miles south of Yuma, Arizona. Expansive white beaches on the lovely Sea of Cortez host pelicans and many other shore birds. The area is also known for its miles of sand dunes.

One can camp anywhere along the beach. RV parks and hotels can be found along the beach, as well.

Some of the activities one can enjoy while in El Golfo include:

  • Visiting shrimp farms.
  • Exploring abandoned salt mines.
  • Fishing in the protected Biosphere.
  • Bird watching in the protected Biosphere.
  • Scuba diving or snorkeling on massive reefs.
  • Touring the extensive sand dunes.
  • Guided fishing trips.
  • Renting ATV's.
  • Lounging in the sun and surf.

Children running on beach in El Golfo de Santa Clara

The beach stretches on for 30 miles or more south, one can drive or walk, watching the fishing boats ( pongas ). Beaches are virtually deserted—the perfect place for a Mexican holiday. Be sure to drive on the beach rather than the hard pack, which is deceptively difficult to maneuver.

Check the tide charts before you set up camp. The tides are crazy, fluctuating 20 feet or more. A camping spot could quickly be under water if one does not pay attention to the tides.

A 28-mile beach excursion from El Golfo to the 2nd light house is a nice day-trip. There are miles of trails with amazing views of the sea, mountains and desert around El Golfo.

One of the El Golfo websites describes the area as follows: If you like sand and sea, you will love El Golfo! El Golfo is one of the best-kept secrets in the Western Hemisphere.

When Do You Need Travel Insurance?

T ravel is an adventure filled with unexpected detours. Whether it's a volcano erupting in Iceland or a sudden illness before a big trip to Kenya, the unpredictable happens. That's why travel insurance isn't just a checkbox on your planning list; it's a parachute in your backpack for your personal finances . Let's dive into when you really need travel insurance and how it shields your travel investments.

What travel insurance can cover

Travel insurance can give you peace of mind when it comes to several elements of travel.

Natural disasters and severe weather

Did you know that 12% of trips are affected by natural disasters? Take, for instance, my personal mishap in 2010 when the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland erupted. Ash clouds billowed into the sky, grounding flights across Europe, including my own in London. Stuck unexpectedly and without travel insurance, the financial and logistical stress was immense. This experience underscored a harsh truth: Travel disruptions are not just possible; they are a real risk that can happen anywhere, anytime.

If your travel destination has a reputation for weather-related unpredictability, travel insurance is a must. It ensures you can recoup the costs if you need to cancel or your travel is disrupted. This kind of foresight is invaluable, particularly considering that 41% of U.S. travelers do not purchase travel insurance when going abroad.

Health emergencies

The risk of falling ill or having an accident is more common than most travelers anticipate. In 2022, 1 in 5 paid travel insurance claims was for medical emergencies. U.S. health plans often provide limited coverage overseas, which means you could be facing hefty medical bills far from home without travel insurance. Plus, emergency medical evacuation -- which can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $200,000 -- is typically covered under travel medical insurance, safeguarding your health and your wallet.

High-cost trips

Travel insurance is crucial if you're investing in a once-in-a-lifetime trip or your travel plans include high-cost, non-refundable elements like tours, cruises, or multiple connecting flights. In 2022, the average claim payment for travel insurance was $2,157, while travelers only spent an average of $266 per policy. This relatively small investment can protect against significant financial losses, especially if your non-refundable trip costs are more than your budget can stand.

The "cancel for any reason" safety net

Sometimes, plans change not because of a disaster or illness but simply because you decide to. That's where "cancel for any reason" (CFAR) coverage comes in. This add-on allows you to recover part of your investment even if your reason for canceling isn't covered under a standard policy. While CFAR can add about 50% to your insurance cost, it offers flexibility and peace of mind, reimbursing you for 75% of your prepaid, non-refundable expenses if you cancel at least 48 hours before departure.

Long journeys and remote destinations

Extended vacations or travels to remote locations with limited medical facilities also warrant travel insurance. The further you are from home, the more complicated and expensive it is to handle unexpected issues like medical emergencies or trip interruptions. The average trip cancellation claim was $6,448 in 2022 -- highlighting how crucial it is to have coverage that matches the scope and scale of your journey.

This is also important if you plan to be abroad for a long time. For example, I live with my family in Switzerland for the summer, so we get insurance to cover our entire stay in the event we need to go to a doctor for anything from strep throat to a broken bone.

Other costs covered by travel insurance

Here's a quick list of what's typically covered.

  • Trip cancellation: Reimburses 100% of prepaid, non-refundable deposits if you cancel for a covered reason.
  • Travel delay: Covers expenses incurred due to delays if the policy covers the cause.
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR): Allows cancellation for any reason not listed in the base policy and provides partial reimbursement.
  • Trip interruption: Reimburses non-refundable parts of your trip if interrupted for a covered reason.
  • Interruption for any reason (IFAR): This policy offers reimbursement for any interruption, regardless of the reason, as long as it's not listed in the base policy.
  • Missed connection: Compensates for costs incurred due to missing a scheduled flight or other transportation due to a covered event.
  • Baggage delay: Reimburses for necessary purchases like clothing and toiletries if bags go missing during travel.

These coverages help manage the risks and potential inconveniences associated with traveling, providing peace of mind no matter where your journey takes you.

When you should get travel insurance

Like auto or home insurance , travel insurance is often considered a prudent investment, especially under certain travel conditions where the risks and potential losses could be significant. Here are some scenarios where buying travel insurance proves to be especially worthwhile.

  • High nonrefundable costs: If your trip's upfront costs are substantial and nonrefundable, insurance can protect you from severe financial loss if your plans fall through.
  • International travel: Having insurance is crucial when traveling abroad, where unexpected issues can complicate matters.
  • Remote destinations: Travel insurance is essential for peace of mind and safety in areas with limited healthcare facilities.
  • Hurricane-prone areas: Insurance can protect you from last-minute cancellations and disruptions when traveling to regions known for hurricanes or other severe weather.
  • Complex itineraries: With connecting flights or multiple destinations, the chances of encountering issues increase, making insurance a smart choice.
  • Flexible cancellation options: Certain travel insurance policies can offer partial reimbursement if you need to cancel or cut your trip short for any reason.

Choosing whether to buy travel insurance is about assessing risk. Will the peace of mind of knowing you can handle almost any issue while away from home make your trip more enjoyable? If the answer is yes, then travel insurance is worth it.

We've just been hearing from Sir Keir Starmer, who stopped to speak to reporters at the Labour Party "battle bus" launch in Uxbridge.

He was asked about the row around Diane Abbott, and his decision to confirm she is not barred from standing for the party - after first saying he wouldn't give a view.

"I dealt with that issue yesterday," Sir Keir says, before changing the subject.

"Today is about taking our argument to the country and getting people back to work.

"There are millions of people who aren't in work, who are on benefits, who desperately want the dignity and respect of being back to work."

Pressed again on the situation around Ms Abbott, Sir Keir says: "I dealt with this yesterday."

He was then asked more widely about a reluctance from black voters to back Labour after the Diane Abbott row.

He dodges the question, pointing again to change.

Sir Keir Starmer jokes that Angela Rayner should "check that Boris Johnson" isn't stowing away in the Labour "battle bus" as the party launched its tour.

Of Angela Rayner, he says: "All week she's been showing me photographs of her bus, and now I've come to see this fantastic bus."

He compares this to Tory defectors, saying you wait for one "for ages" and then "three come along all at once".

Sir Keir adds: "But this one I'm reliably told has got a fridge at the back of it, so check that Boris Johnson isn't in there - he used to be around these parts."

The joke is in reference to the former prime minister hiding in a fridge as he tried to avoid a TV interview with Good Morning Britain.

The Labour leader then says again that the 4 July election "is about a choice".

"A choice before the country - a clear choice. More chaos and division with the Tories after 14 years of failure, more of the same - or change, hope, turn the page and re-build with Labour."

He claims that the Tories are "praying on people's hopes" over levelling up, with "another unfunded commitment" around investing £20m in 30 towns.

"This election is all about change," Sir Keir says. "A changed Britain.

"It starts with the first steps."

Sir Keir Starmer is in west London, where he is launching the Labour Party's "battle bus" - which will travel 5,000 miles throughout the election campaign.

The Labour leader is in Uxbridge, Boris Johnson's former constituency, joined by his deputy Angela Rayner and shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves.

First up is Ms Rayner, who will be on the "battle bus" for its journey.

She says: "This election is about putting the UK first."

The deputy leader adds: "We've got to turn the page, we've got to have change in this country."

Ms Rayner says she has been "looking forward" to getting on the bus, and sending a message that "we are a changed Labour Party".

She hands over to the shadow chancellor, who says the UK is "crying out" for change.

"I will never play fast and loose with the public finances in the way the Conservatives have done," she says, repeating the Labour line that "stability is change".

The Labour Party could win the upcoming election by a landslide with a 302-seat majority, a new poll has suggested.

The large-scale MRP polling, published by Electoral Calculus and Find Out Now , predicted that the Conservatives will be reduced to just 66 seats, compared to Labour with 476.

In this scenario, the Tories would return just seven more seats than the Liberal Democrats, who would have 59.

The poll also suggests that 18 cabinet ministers would lose their seats. They include: Oliver Dowden, James Cleverly, Grant Shapps, Penny Mordaunt, Kemi Badenoch, Claire Coutinho, Mel Stride, Gillian Keegan, Mark Harper, David Davies, Victoria Prentis, Esther McVey, Andrew Mitchell and Johnny Mercer.

All of these seats would be lost to Labour, the poll suggests.

The Multi-level Regression and Poststratification is a method of polling which Electoral Calculus claims has "successfully predicted the last two general elections".

The polling of 10,000 people was conducted between 20 and 27 May.

"I smell a virgin…" Katie Hopkins said, looking straight at me. "I smell lefty, pressy scum!"

The far-right commentator was addressing an audience of 500 people in a soggy tent in a rural corner of North West England.

I was standing at the back but that didn't stop her singling me out. The crowd theatrically booed me, as if I was a pantomime villain. I blushed.

Officially called the Weekend Truth Festival (WTF), this was one of many strange moments I witnessed at the three-day event that some may call a conspiracy theory gathering.

As well as being called out by Hopkins, I saw children chanting anti-vax slogans and had a magnet applied to my arm to prove my COVID vaccinations are the antenna of a bioweapon.

This was the first WTF and its organisers hailed it as a success.

With the general election campaign officially under way, what better time to keep a close eye on the latest polling?

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about the different political parties.

Tim Farron, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats, has said his party will try to "return the people's game to the people".

The Liberal Democrats have set out a new manifesto pledge for 10 Premier League games a season to be available to watch on free-to-air TV.

Asked about this, Mr Farron said: "We know there are other issues at stake, but there is something to be said for trying to return the people's game to the people.

"It is now just over 30 years since pay-per-view has been dominating Premier League football on television."

The Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey has accused the Conservatives of having "completely failed football fans".

He said: "From breaking their promise to create a football regulator, to allowing greedy broadcasters to hide Premier League football away from millions."

But why are the Lib Dems focusing on football?

Mr Farron says: "We're not saying this is the only thing we're going to do.

"We think it's absolutely outrageous that we have cancer waiting times that means that two thirds of people in my constituency at times are waiting for more than a month to get that first treatment, a third waiting more than two months to get their first treatment.

"People dying because of the lack of investment in GP's and cancer services and other parts of the health service.

"We are absolutely for promoting the fact that we need to clean up our rivers and waterways we need to tackle the cost of living crisis."

By Paul Kelso , business correspondent

Launching his plans for Great British Energy, a state-owned clean power company, Sir Keir Starmer promised the new entity would reduce bills, create jobs and deliver increased energy security.

Specifically, Labour's press release for an idea first announced in October 2022 said: "Great British Energy will cut energy bills for good, as families face the threat of £900 annual energy price spikes under Tories."

That claim is based on analysis of fluctuations in the energy price cap set by Ofgem and the prospect of soaring energy prices, triggered by global events - specifically, the Russian invasion of Ukraine - being repeated.

Labour's analysis of the price cap calculates that in the two years since April 2022, consumers have paid around £1,880 - or around £900 a year - more than they would if prices had remained at pre-war levels. The government also spent £94bn on the energy price guarantee, further capping bills at £2,500 per household.

While the £900 figure is correct, and energy bills remain well above the long-term average, the likelihood of further spikes depends on your reading of world events.

Where Labour and the Conservatives agree is that the way to increase energy security and cut bills is to accelerate the transition to renewable and low carbon sources of power. Where they differ is how fast that should happen.

The prime minister has taken a defensive approach, signalling the Conservatives' worry about being so far behind in the polls.

Sir Keir Starmer's visits show the scale of their ambition and highlight Labour's awareness of the challenge they face. They need to gain 125 seats to win the smallest possible majority.

This campaign is being fought on new electoral boundaries, with many constituencies undergoing significant changes since 2019.

For the purposes of this analysis, we use notional results based on calculations by Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher, honorary professors at the University of Exeter, which estimate the 2019 election seat results if they had taken place on the new constituency boundaries.
