Rewarding Experience

“My sons and I totally enjoyed our afternoon walking, wading, and fly fishing with James outside of Cherokee in the Smokies. We fished a beautiful creek — all to ourselves underneath a high canopy (aka plenty of room to throw flies without hooking trees!). Although there was no lack of fish, hooking them was another story! Our slow reflexes and novice skills were no match for the native little brown trout! Nonetheless, James’ patience and wry sense of humor made it a very rewarding experience. Highly recommend!”

Testimonials

Taylor took myself and my two young boys out fly fishing for half a day. He was great with the kids, got them hooked on a lot of trout! Strongly recommend him for anyone with kids. - Lakota Denton If this is any indication, Nate has been asking to go fishing every day since we left. - Rob Speir I booked a full-day back country trip with Mitch, and it was awesome. Mitch took me to this gorgeous mountain stream at 4,000+ feet of elevation. It was so beautiful -- pristine water plunging into cascading pools surrounded by rhododendron. I caught 20+ native brook trout on the day and 2 wild rainbows. - Mike Mirarchi We had an awesome time fishing with Cody. He was a great guide and guy. I highly recommend booking with Cody. He’s a born-and-raised local and knows the lay of the land like a pro. - Cyrus Niakan

Trout Fishing Guided Trips

NC Fly Fishing Guided Trips, Lessons, Schools & Trout Fishing Instruction

Fly fishing guided float trips.

Book Now Full Day Float Trip Book Now Half Day Float Trip

A guided float trip is recommended for those seeking to cover lots of prime water without the worry of taking an unexpected dip. The float trips are a better choice for the very young and old throughout the year because you remain warmer fly fishing from a boat in cool temps. I spend close to 75% of the time guiding fly fishing from a boat on the Delayed Harvest trips. Guided float trips prevent the worry of taking an unexpected dip hence more common for the new wade fly fisher.

Fly Fishing Guided Wade Trips

Book Now Full Day Wade Trip Book Now Half Day Wade Trip

The guided fly fishing wade trip is best for those with specific goals to improve which matches what they normally do when they go out on their own. Goals such as improving your casting, hook setting, water reading, and playing fish are typical on most days. All skill levels are welcome, hence beginner fly fishers to the seasoned angler.

Fly Fishing Guided Lake Trips

Book a Guided Lake Trip

I enjoy the winter months the most for opportunities to fly fish for trout! The guided lake trips are addictive because the trout are powerful in the lakes and reach much bigger sizes on average. The use of three flies per leader and long casts makes lake fishing a bit more difficult for new fly fishers. NC fly fishing guide trips, lessons, schools & trout fishing instruction happen all year on the beautiful lakes of the Smokies! The rewards are much greater overall though compared to a river trip.

Fly Casting Instruction

1-Hour Fly Casting 2-Hour Casting Lesson 3-Hour Casting Lesson

From single-handed casting, Skagit, and two-handed casting I enjoy teaching all levels of fly flingers! I am a Master Casting Instructor through the FFI. Rates are ($300.00 per hour) for fly casting instruction . Private instruction is common all months of the year. Perfect for the tune-up to your exotic dream trip! I do offer several clinics throughout the year based here in Bryson City which helps to raise the bar for my local area. NC fly fishing guide trips, lessons, schools & trout fishing instruction happen all year long! Message me for information on upcoming dates.

Fly Fishing Specialty Classes

Check the fly fishing specialty classes page out for a weekend class tailored to you. This page also has multiple fly fishing show locations where I will be teaching in a town near you! If you are interested in a specific technique that includes all of the classics then I would strongly suggest checking these classes out as they fill rapidly throughout the year and are limited.

Fly Fishing Guide School

The fly fishing guide school is the best plan of action for anglers that truly wish to improve their personal skills or desire the proper training to become professional guides. We place graduate guides all over the globe through the schools. Job placement opportunities are vast through the training which you receive through the schools. Learn how to be a fishing guide with these opportunities right here in Bryson City, NC! Skills such as rowing, fly casting, teaching, tactics, and fly fishing techniques will improve your knowledge of trout fishing.

Corporate Groups

Backcountry trips, destination trips, delayed harvest fly fishing for trout.

I helped to establish the “delayed harvest” concept in 1991 with the NCWRC. The first pilot program was on the Upper Nantahala River. The town of Bryson City now has its very own Delayed Harvest section of the Tuckasegee river right through town! Furthermore, these programs are perfect for those new to the sport or those chasing big trout and lots of numbers. Check out the NCWRC map for the stocking dates of the Delayed Harvest !

Great Smoky Mountain National Park Wild Trout Fly Fishing

There are over 2,400 miles of wild trout waters in Swain County! North Carolina has the highest percentage of government lands East of the Mississippi River! In part, that is why I moved here straight out of college in 1987. Wild streams in the Smokies are more technical fly casting because of diverse currents and plenty of obstacles. It is better suited for intermediate to advanced casters overall. NC fly fishing guide trips, lessons, schools & trout fishing instruction are offered year-round! We look forward to seeing you on the water soon! In addition, call 828-736-1469 or [email protected] for questions about your next trout fishing trip!

We had an EXCEPTIONAL time with Tony our Instructor/Guide for the two days we were with him. Truly an Awesome Guy! LOVED him 🙂  I came away from the experience with enough confidence to say I can Fly Fish and I will continue to do so at home! Thank you so much for such a great time!
Just wanted to let you know that we had a fabulous day out with Tony. He was a great teacher and guide – both patient and encouraging. My son, Chris, and I feel that he taught us fly fishing skills and techniques that will serve us well for many years to come!
My husband Gary and I had a fabulous time last Friday fly fishing with Tony. The site he chose on a private stream in Hendersonville was beautiful and full of large rainbow trout. He was very patient and encouraging with us every step of the way. We will definitely plan to do it again!
We had a wonderful experience this weekend with Tony Brooks.  He did a great job explaining how to fly fish, showing us how to do it and then working with us as we practiced.  Thank you for providing this service to the community and sharing your talents.  I definitely think that my husband will be doing more fly fishing.
Just wanted to say what a great time we had on the river on Sunday! Benjamin was very happy, and loved doing some real fly fishing. Chris was a perfect guide – full of patience (especially important with Benjamin) and humor. He even gave us a quick drive through downtown Asheville (appreciated by me) and a stop by the Krispy Kreme shop (appreciated by Benjamin). Benjamin liked the school we were there to see, so we may be back in the Asheville area more often over the next few months. I hope we have a chance to use your guide service again.
Considering i have never touched a fly rod before, we managed to catch close to 20 fish including brown, rainbow and brook trout and a bass. Turned out to be a great day from what could have been lousy from heavy rains the night before. Thank you.
Hi Starr -Thanks again for a great guiding trip way back over the Easter holiday – my Dad and I learned a lot and had a fantastic time. This is a totally new world for us, thanks for helping both if us get introduced to it. Again, had a great time. All the best…
Starr, I can’t thank you enough for Saturday. I had so much fun and learned a lot. It was really one of my best fishing days! Craziness the number of fish in that river and not even moving when you cast a fly. I’m surprised we didn’t step on any!  I’ll figure out the mending upstream / downstream on a case by case basis! The picnic just topped off the great day!
Starr, Just wanted to let you know that we had a fabulous fishing trip with Rick Wedell last Friday..  He was a wonderful guide, very patient, professional and informative.
We may have acquired trout fever!  Hopefully we can make a future date with him and be better anglers.  Please let him know how much we enjoyed the trip and look
forward to our next fishing adventure in the beautiful NC mountains.
Tony (and Starr):I’ve been meaning to email you since our day in Cherokee. We both had a great time and learned a lot. I only wish I remembered half of it. Guess we’ll have to make another trip and spend another day with you next year. Thanks again. We’ll be in touch when we are planning our next trip to the area.

French Broad, Nantahala rivers voted top 10 in US for adventuring on the water: Here's why

fly fishing trips nc

Western North Carolina has made appearances on summer-related  USA TODAY 10Best  readers choice awards  once again , earning spots on three more lists of outdoor adventures. This time, WNC was praised for its options for adventuring on the water.

Results released June 12 include Best River for Tubing, Best Fishing Lodge, Best River for Fly Fishing and more. Candidates for  10Best lists  are chosen by expert panels and voted on by readers to determine the final top 10 for each list.

Here are the WNC choices this time around, information on each winner and more.

More: Hiking trails, concert series, scenic train rides: Western NC summer options voted top 10 in US

Best River for Tubing

The French Broad River placed 10th in this voting, perhaps no surprise to visitors and residents of the area, due to the amount of nearby tubing providers.

The writers mentioned the French Broad's long history, believed to be the third-oldest river in the world. It also mentioned the multiple access points on the urban stretch of the river, providing the ability to float past Carrier Park, the River Arts District and more.

Of course, options in more outdoorsy areas are also excellent, with put-ins and outfitters in towns like Marshall and Rosman providing views of mountains, cliffs and forests.

10Best Rivers for Tubing

  • Shenandoah River (Virginia and West Virginia)
  • Potomac River (Harpers Ferry, West Virginia)
  • Root River (Lanesboro, Minnesota)
  • Bogue Chitto River (Washington Parish, Louisiana)
  • Apple River (Somerset, Wisconsin)
  • Guadalupe River (New Braunfels, Texas)
  • Rainbow River (Dunnellon, Florida)
  • Chattahoochee River (Helen, Georgia)
  • Delaware River (Milford, New Jersey)
  • French Broad River (Asheville, North Carolina)

More: Taking a road trip? These Western NC places voted among top 10 in US to stay. What to know.

Best Fishing Lodge

Chetola Resort at Blowing Rock , 185 Chetola Lake Drive in Blowing Rock, was voted second place in the nation for best fishing lodge. Guests can fish on private or public waters during half and full-day trips, with gear and pro instruction provided.

Mountain streams, a private lake and plenty more rivers and streams to explore are all options, with the Blue Ridge Mountains as a picturesque backdrop. Additionally, the 10Best story mentioned tennis and pickleball, indoor swimming, hiking trails, fitness classes and a restaurant with waterfront dining. Amenities include computer use, babysitting and child care, a business center and more.

10Best Fishing Lodges

  • Blue Bank Resort (Hornbeak, Tennessee)
  • Chetola Resort at Blowing Rock (Blowing Rock, North Carolina)
  • Dogwood Lodge (Hopedale, Louisiana)
  • Northland Lodge (Hayward, Wisconsin)
  • Gallatin River Lodge (Bozeman, Montana)

  • Ballard’s Resort (Baudette, Minnesota)
  • Alagnak Lodge (King Salmon, Alaska)

More: Site near Bryson City voted top 10 in two outdoor adventure categories: Why it's special

Best River for Fly Fishing

The Nantahala River ranked 10th in voting for best fly-fishing rivers. The river, which runs just under 50 miles through WNC, was described as "idyllic for fly fishing year-round." The Nantahala entry praised the experience of fishing in the summer in particular, due to the cold water feeding the river from the Nantahala Lake in the higher reaches of the mountains.

10Best Rivers for Fly Fishing

  • Au Sable River (Michigan)
  • San Juan River (New Mexico)
  • Yakima River (Washington)
  • South Fork Holston River (Tennessee and Virginia)
  • Snake River (Idaho and Wyoming)
  • Yellowstone River (Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming)

Best River for Fly Fishing (2024) June 12, 2024

Fly fishing on rivers across the United States offers a diverse and enriching experience. Anglers can enjoy the tranquility of nature, the thrill of the catch, and the satisfaction of mastering the art of the sport. These 10 rivers, selected by an expert panel and voted by readers as the best for fly fishing in the country, each present a unique challenge and stunning backdrops.

Nantahala River

No. 10: Nantahala River - North Carolina

Visitors to Nantahala National Forest can spend their day exploring the splendor of the Nantahala River, a scenic water feature that runs just under 50 miles across western North Carolina. The river is idyllic for fly fishing year-round — even in the summer, as the river is fed by cold water streaming down from Nantahala Lake up in the mountains.

Deschutes River

No. 9: Deschutes River - Oregon

A prominent water feature that cuts through the center of Oregon, the Deschutes River has played a vital role in human society for thousands of years. Indigenous groups and 19th century settlers made full use of its rich bounty of fish. Today, the Lower Deschutes River is a popular spot for fly fishing.

Bighorn River

No. 8: Bighorn River - Montana and Wyoming

A particularly popular destination for Montana fly fishers, the Bighorn River offers a wealth of fascinating fish, flowing north from Wyoming into Montana. Brown and rainbow trout can be found in abundance on the river, which runs clear and cold in warmer months and free of ice in the winter.

Madison River

No. 7: Madison River - Montana and Wyoming

When it comes to Montana fly fishing, the Madison River has earned widespread acclaim, thanks to its rich array of local species and plenty of areas for walk-and-wade fishing. Rainbow and brown trout are the most commonly sighted, but you'll also find westslope cutthroat trout and mountain whitefish during a typical float trip.

Yellowstone River

No. 6: Yellowstone River - Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming

While Yellowstone National Park draws millions of tourists each year, fly fishing enthusiasts flock to the rushing waters of Yellowstone River to try their hand at landing a cutthroat, rainbow, or brown trout amidst a wide range of other species. With roughly 200 miles of prime trout waters, there's many opportunities to claim your spot for a peaceful day of fly fishing.

Snake River

No. 5: Snake River - Idaho and Wyoming

Spanning more than 1,000 miles across four states, Snake River serves as one of Idaho's most prominent water features. Many agree that South Fork of the Snake River is the best place for fly fishing. Here, you'll find cutthroat, brown, and rainbow trout.

South Fork Holston River

No. 4: South Fork Holston River - Tennessee and Virginia

Cutting across Virginia and Tennessee, Holston River is an angler's dream. And when it comes to fly fishing, South Fork Holston River is tough to beat. Thanks to the river's many insects, fish can spend their days feasting to their hearts' content, imbuing the river with particularly large rainbow and brown trout for anglers to encounter.

Yakima River

No. 3: Yakima River - Washington

Located in Washington and the state's only blue ribbon trout stream, the Yakima River is known for its gorgeous river canyon scenery and stellar fly fishing. Anglers can take to the shorefront in search of cutthroat trout and rainbow trout, two particularly prominent species in the region.

San Juan River

No. 2: San Juan River - New Mexico

A crucial water source in a particularly arid region, the San Juan River provides some much-needed relief to the flora and fauna of Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. The water's steady and consistent temperatures year-round make it conducive to fishing in all four seasons. Anglers will find rainbow, brown, and cutbow trout, as well carp, pike, and bass.

Au Sable River

No. 1: Au Sable River - Michigan

The Au Sable River spans 138 miles along the northern reaches of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, with no shortage of fascinating fauna thriving within its waters. For visiting fly fishers, brown trout are a particularly common catch, with the surrounding shores offering perfect conditions for the fish to thrive each year.

Matt Canter was born in High Point, NC (furniture capital of the world).  Even at a very young age Matt was always attracted to the outdoors.  He grew interested in pond and lake fishing with live and artificial baits as his father and grandfather introduced him to it.  One particular afternoon, Matt and his Dad were going to join up with Matt’s uncle Eddie for a little brim fishing.  When Eddie showed up with nothing but a fly rod, and started catching brim left and right, Matt was impressed and traded in his conventional tackle for a fly rod.    From that point on, a fly rod travelled almost anywhere Matt did.  In fact, the fly rod was the main reason Matt chose to go to Western Carolina University (because of the areas rivers and streams).  Immediately after graduating, Matt started guiding for Brookings in Cashiers, NC which is one of the oldest fly shops in the area.  A couple years later he took on the role of head guide.  Shortly thereafter, Matt was offered the General Managers position, and slowly started to buy equity into the business over the last 20 plus years.  Present day, Matt is the majority owner in one of the southeasts’ largest fly shop and guide services and has hosted groups on destination fly fishing trips all over the world.  Please check them out at www.brookingsonline.com or on Facebook and Instagram as @brookingsanglers.
