Huntsville’s identity has been shaped by the military, and it wouldn’t be nicknamed “Rocket City” if it weren’t for Redstone Arsenal and the Von Braun rocket team’s pioneering work for the Army. The city is proud to be a military community that plays a critical role in the defense of our nation. More than many communities, the residents understand the sacrifices Service members and their families make.

Perhaps Huntsville’s understanding and appreciation come from the large number of local citizens who have served in the military. Maybe they still have the patriotic excitement that the space race generated in the 1960s.  Or, maybe the patriotism comes from the defense jobs that give many of their citizens a closer look at the price of freedom that the members of the Armed Forces pay. Either way, in Huntsville, Alabama, military members are celebrated in the highest regard. Whether you're planning your next family vacation or looking to explore on your own, Rocket City welcomes veterans and active duty servicemembers with a variety of attractions, events, and military discounts.

1. Veterans Memorial Park

The Huntsville Veterans Memorial, dedicated on Veterans Day, 11.11.11, honors and pays tribute to all veterans for their "Courage", "Sacrifice", and "Duty". The Memorial has become a hallowed place that inspires visitors to reflect, remember and honor veterans. It provides an educational venue to teach visitors about our military past, the cost of war, and sacrifices made to ensure our freedom.

2. U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum

The Museum is dedicated to promoting and disseminating the accomplishments of American military men and women. The emphasis is on participants of World War I and subsequent conflicts, whose survivors and families can use the Museum facilities to reminisce on their own experiences and those of parents, grandparents, and other close relatives. The Museum displays more than 30 historical military vehicles from World War I to the present, including the oldest surviving jeep, the Ford Pygmy.

Free admission is available for those currently serving in the United States Military – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard as well as Active Duty and Reservists, National Guardsman (regardless of status), U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and First Responders, up to five family members with valid ID .

3. Armed Forces Week

Each summer visitors are encouraged to take the week to honor the service and sacrifice of men and women who are a part of the armed forces both past and present. From concerts to softball games, food trucks to fireworks, you won’t want to miss these local events. Along with the festivities, several local attractions offer free or discounted admission to active and retired military and their families including the Huntsville Botanical Garden, Burritt on the Mountain, the Earlyworks Children’s Museum, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum, and The Weeden House.

4. Military Appreciation Nights at Huntsville Havoc and Trash Panda games

Whether you’re a Baseball or a Hockey fan, get your competitive spirit flowing at a local sports game. Both the Huntsville Havoc and the Rocket City Trash Pandas offer Military Nights with special pre and post game festivities and tributes to the men and women who have served in the armed forces. Additionally, throughout the regular season, present a valid military ID at the ticket office to receive $2 off on admission to any game .

Havoc Hockey : During Military Appreciation night Huntsville honors Veterans, activity duty, retirees, members of the National Guard, reserves and their dependents with free ticket vouchers to the game. The players will proudly sport custom designed military themed jerseys on the ice and auction them off after the game.

Rocket CIty Trash Pandas : Head out to Toyota Field for a Military Tribute Night in partnership with Redstone Arsenal. Fans will be awestruck by the pregame activities featuring a parachute team, color guard, flag presentation and more. Finish the night with a patriotic firework display and live music performance.

5.  Military Camping Only at Redstone Arsenal

The sky’s the limit for your next family-friendly vacation. Enjoy the great outdoors while relaxing in the comfort of your RV (or tent) at Redstone Arsenal MWR RV Park. The campground is exclusively for active or retired military, DoD civilians and NASA employees.

6 . Memorial Day Weekend Celebration

Remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to their country during Memorial Day Weekend. Take a stroll through Huntsville and visit the museums, monuments, and memorials on an interactive journey of U.S. military history. Stop and see the oldest surviving military Jeep in the world at the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum or grab a picnic and head to the park for a relaxing day of remembrance.

7. Veterans Day Celebration

November 11th in Huntsville is a special day thanks to the longtime partnership between the local residents and military community in the area. Along with special celebrations like the Veterans Day Parade, Veterans Day Breakfast, and Veterans Dinner, many local businesses and restaurants will offer deals for veterans and specials to celebrate the day.

Don F. Pratt Museum

The Don F. Pratt Museum was established in 1956 as an official museum for the 101st Airborne Division. The museum’s central theme is the history of the 101st Airborne Division or the “Screaming Eagles.” As a result, exhibits in the Pratt Museum cover the period from the early 1940s to the present day.

We have the privilege of displaying personal memorabilia donated by the following military leaders in our collection:

  • Brigadier General Don F. Pratt
  • General William C. Lee
  • General Maxwell D. Taylor
  • General Anthony C. McAuliffe
  • General William C. Westmoreland

Other exhibits include a completely restored CG-4A cargo glider—which carried glider-borne Soldiers into combat during World War II and two 17th century bronze eagles. The collection also includes an illuminated Dutch Manuscript recognizing the Division’s role in Liberating Holland in World War II as well as captured enemy weapons. Other key exhibits feature equipment from a Vietnam recruiter’s jeep from the 1970s, and items that belonged to Adolph Hitler and other high-ranking Nazi officials.

“Brass Hat”—a fully restored C-47 aircraft at Fort Campbell in KY

An outdoor park across the street from the museum displays various military aircraft and equipment used by the division.

The centerpiece of the park is the “Brass Hat”—a fully restored C-47 aircraft resembling the plane used to carry the division commander, Major General Maxwell D. Taylor, into Normandy during World War II. The museum also includes a reference library and archives, both guided and unguided tours (reservations required), daily historical films, gift shop, gallery talks, lectures and educational programs.

The Early Years of Airborne Warfare

Although the main museum theme focuses on the history of the 101st Airborne Division, there are also individual displays that address early developments in airborne warfare. Included in these displays are the following Airborne units:

11th Airborne Division

12th Armored Division

14th Armored Division

20th Armored Division

Early on this offseason, Lions general manager Brad Holmes added a pair of veteran corners to the secondary. First, he traded for Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Carlton Davis III. Then, he inked former Las Vegas Raiders CB Amik Robertson to a free-agent deal.

Holmes followed up those two moves by further beefing up the team's cornerbacks group via this past April's NFL Draft. The fourth-year GM opted to use both of his first two picks on the position. He selected Alabama’s Terrion Arnold at No. 24 overall and Missouri's Ennis Rakestraw Jr. with the 61st overall pick.

Simply said, Holmes made a serious effort to upgrade the team's pass defense – a component of defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn's unit that struggled mightily a season ago. In fact, Detroit allowed the sixth-most passing yards (4,205) and passing touchdowns (28) in the league in 2023.

As a result of the aforementioned acquisitions, the Lions should be equipped with a vastly improved group of cornerbacks this upcoming season. And, these corners – such as Davis and Arnold – should be more than able to handle themselves in man coverage situations, easing things up for the rest of Detroit's defenders.

“It can do wonders,” Lions linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard said of Detroit's corners being able to play in man. “We’ve added (DJ) Reader, we’ve added (Marcus) Davenport. These guys are high-end players in the NFL who’ve proven it already. So, it’s not skepticism, you’re not looking over your shoulder. Not saying that’s what’s happened, but it is what it is. Guys trying to overcompensate for what they thought were places they needed to help instead of doing their job. That bit a bunch of people in the butts last year.”

Throughout the spring, Sheppard noticed the Lions’ cornerbacks – i.e. Arnold – playing with a greater sense of energy and more bravado than in previous years.

That, to Sheppard, can also have an immensely positive impact on a team's defense.

“It’s the confidence thing, too,” Sheppard said. “Like being on this practice field, hearing corners talking trash out the huddle, saying, ‘I’ve got this guy, and it’s nothing you’re gonna do about it.’ I haven’t been around that since I’ve been here. And, I’ve rarely been around it in the league. It’s rare you get guys like that that walk, talk and act with that type of confidence. And, we have multiple of them right now, so it’s a thing of beauty for sure.”

The Lions will enter the 2024 season with a linebackers room that consists of starters Alex Anzalone and Jack Campbell, plus reserves Derrick Barnes, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Malcolm Rodriguez.

Sheppard is a firm believer that these linebackers will benefit from Detroit's cornerbacks being adept at lining up in man coverage. And, according to Sheppard, the team’s corners will benefit from the likes of Anzalone and Campbell each being at least 6-foot-3 and able to take away the intermediate throwing lanes of opposing passers.

“Just like they’re helping us deep to short, we’re helping them short to deep with insulating those intermediate throwing lanes,” Sheppard expressed. “So now, they can stay top shoulder, know the leverage they play and things like that, knowing these guys are gonna be in those windows underneath.”
