14 Best Things To Do in Fort Worth

Updated Dec. 22, 2022

Fort Worth Stockyards Fort Worth Stockyards free

If you only have a day in Fort Worth, head straight to the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. This living museum pays tribute to Fort Worth's Wild West heyday with daily cattle drives and plenty of restaurants serving up cowboy cuisine like beef tenderloin and rabbit-rattlesnake sausage. Start your visit at Stockyards Station, which sits at the heart of this historic neighborhood – from here, you can join a guided walking or Segway tour or hop on a stage coach. If you're interested in the district's history, pay a visit to the Stockyards Museum, which is housed in the former Livestock Exchange building and now contains an extensive collection of documents and artifacts from Fort Worth's Old West era. Meanwhile, the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Texas Trail of Fame will also offer insight into the people who made an impact on the sport and business of rodeo, and the western lifestyle in Texas. If you have kids in tow, take a twirl through the Cowtown Cattlepen Maze or a ride on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad.

Recent visitors strongly recommend visiting the Stockyards on a Friday or Saturday night for the Championship Rodeo. Starting at 7:30 p.m., talented cowboys will show off their riding, roping and racing skills in the Cowtown Coliseum. Afterward, you can test your dancing skills at Billy Bob's Texas – at 3 acres, Billy Bob's claims to be the world's largest honky-tonk. While many reviewers said this was a great activity for first-time visitors, they also cautioned that it is quite touristy.

Sundance Square Sundance Square free

To get a sense of historic Fort Worth, pair your visit to the  Stockyards  with an afternoon at Sundance Square, which is located in the heart of the city. Named for the Sundance Kid – partner to the infamous Butch Cassidy – this 35-block district has been entertaining Fort Worth visitors since the city's Wild West days. During the 1800s, cowboys following the Chisholm Trail would stop here in town to linger in the saloons, gambling parlors and dance halls. Today, the area's red-brick buildings house a variety of shops, restaurants and bars. Sundance Square's pedestrian plaza (located along Main Street between Third and Fourth streets) also features several fountains – the jetted fountains being the most popular. Bring your bathing suit for an afternoon of ducking and diving beneath the spray of 216 jets, or bring your camera in the evening when the fountain is lit by underwater LED light fixtures.

Recent visitors to Sundance Square enjoyed their time, describing the ambiance as quaint and the dining options as varied and plentiful. Many say it's much more fun when there are events going on, which liven up the scene even more. Others were particularly impressed with the area's holiday displays.

Fort Worth Zoo Fort Worth Zoo

Since it opened in 1909, this Texas zoo has been exposing Fort Worth residents and visitors to wildlife from around the world. When it first opened, the Fort Worth Zoo housed one lion, two bear cubs, a coyote, a peacock, an alligator and some rabbits; now, it's a full menagerie with exhibits showcasing everything from jaguars to flamingos. Make your way to the Australian Outback to observe Aussie residents like kangaroos, or visit the African Savanna for views of the Southern black rhinos. Recent visitors also highly recommend spending time in the Museum of Living Art, an award-winning facility that houses some 5,700 birds, reptiles and amphibians who live among hand-painted murals.

Those who have visited the zoo find plenty of aspects to praise, including the well-shaded pathways (lined with water misters primed to keep you cool on hot summer days) and the option to bring your own food and beverages. But heed the advice from these travelers to not ignore the other pastimes found on zoo grounds. For example, spend some time in Texas Wild!, a model Wild West village complete with a petting corral and a laser shooting gallery, as well as several snack options. Other attractions include a carousel, a 25-foot rock climbing wall and a 14,000-square-foot splash area complete with slides, a dump tower and water cannons.

Kimbell Art Museum Kimbell Art Museum free

The Kimbell Art Museum has earned a reputation as one of the top small museums in the world. The facility itself is a work of art, complete with vaults and skylights and a sculpture garden designed by prominent Japanese-American artist, Isamu Noguchi. And despite its modest size, this museum is a must-see for any art buff: the permanent collection houses works that span history and features artists ranging from El Greco and Rembrandt to Monet and Picasso. Other collections include Egyptian and classical antiquities, Asian, Mesoamerican and African art.

Although art aficionados were already impressed by the original Louis Kahn building, which was constructed in 1972, the addition of the Piano Pavilion (named for Italian architect Renzo Piano, who helped design  Paris ' famous  Centre Pompidou ) in 2013 has made the Kimbell feel less cramped, recent visitors say. Many reviewers call this one of the best-kept secrets in Fort Worth, and one that is not to be missed.

Recent visitors were blown away by the beauty of the gardens. Notably, for an outdoor attraction, many travelers say this destination is worth a visit during any month of the year. It's also a family-friendly attraction, although some note upkeep could be improved.

Can't get enough of Fort Worth's Cultural District? Art buffs should not miss the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Visitors will find quintessential artists like Grant Wood, Georgia O'Keeffe and Jacob Lawrence featured at this museum, and may discover a new contemporary favorite, too.  The museum exhibits American art from the 18th century to the present day represented across a variety of different mediums, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and works on paper.

Recent visitors raved about the collections, particularly the locally-relevant cowboy artworks. The museum is widely considered a must-see, and many noted that it is conveniently located near two other major art museums in the neighborhood (the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Kimbell Art Museum ).

Fort Worth Water Gardens Fort Worth Water Gardens free

The Fort Worth Water Gardens are a downtown "oasis" designed by famed 20th-century architect Philip Johnson. Spanning more than 5 acres, the site contains three "pools," including a Quiet Pool, an Aerated and an Active Pool. The Active Pool, which features a canyon of concrete terraces over which water flows to a basin 38 feet below, is perhaps the most visually striking. The Quiet Pool, which is surrounded by bald cypress trees, offers an ideal meditative spot. This shady urban paradise can be experienced year-round; an evening visit offers the chance to view the pools' dramatic architectural lighting. Note that though they are called "pools," swimming and wading is not allowed at the Fort Worth Water Gardens.

Recent visitors called this spot a hidden gem, especially in the summertime. It can be peaceful or quite lively, depending on the weather. Reviewers noted that following posted safety instructions is important, as ignoring them to enter the fast-moving waters is dangerous.

Whether you love live music, theater or architecture, the Bass Performance Hall is not to be missed. Inspired by European opera houses, the building, which opened in 1998, fuses a historicizing exterior with a decidedly modern – but no less spectacular – interior. Architectural highlights include two 48-foot-tall limestone angels on the hall's exterior and an interior dome that measures 80 feet in diameter and features paintings by two Fort Worth artists. After you've gawked at the architecture, step inside for shows ranging from Broadway tours, to concerts, to stand-up comedy.

Recent visitors praised the acoustics of the Bass Performance Hall, as well as its beautiful design. However, some reviewers found the security measures and staff less than welcoming.

Fort Worth Museum of Science and History Fort Worth Museum of Science and History

Kids and adults alike will enjoy the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. This interactive museum includes popular traditional exhibits featuring dinosaurs and Plains cultures, but also offers many opportunities for visitors to touch and experiment. Meanwhile, "Innovation Studios" allow kids to make memories – literally – with its focus on drawing, inventing and designing. The "Children's Museum" exhibit features a kid-sized grocery store, resources to design a building or train station, and a variety of age-appropriate play spaces. There is also a playground, a planetarium and the separate Cattle Raisers Museum on site, which features exhibits on the history and science of the cattle industry.

Recent visitors note that the museum is small, although it packs a lot of exhibits into the space. Some say it is best for young children and adults, though others found that toddlers to early teens alike enjoyed the outing for hours.

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame celebrates the women who helped shape the American West. The 33,000-square-foot museum features interactive galleries, theaters and archives that house thousands of artifacts that serve to tell the stories of more than 750 women. Artifacts include Annie Oakley's handwritten letters, her wedding ring and one of her shotguns. But it's not all ranchers and rodeo winners here; Laura Ingalls Wilder, Sacagawea and even Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor are honored in the museum's hall of fame. Among the museum's exhibits are some high-tech, interactive features, including the opportunity to create your own digital boot, shirt or horse projection, as well as the ability to superimpose yourself riding a bucking bronco in a digital rodeo.

Recent visitors enjoyed their stop here. Many noted that this is a unique museum experience and that there is a substantial variety of artifacts to reward a visit. Many were impressed with Annie Oakley hologram.

Jill Biden takes 7,200-mile round trip in private jet from D-Day event in France to Delaware for Hunter's trial

F irst Lady Jill Biden made a 7,200-mile trip from the D-Day commemorative event in France to Delaware for her stepson Hunter's federal firearms trial on Friday.

After attending a D-Day anniversary event in Normandy, France, where President Joe Biden spoke about the current threats to democracy mirroring those faced during World War II, she quickly returned to her home state.

Despite having a state dinner back in France on Saturday, she's chosen to make the 7,200-mile round trip to be present in court.

Hunter Biden , the president's only surviving son, is currently on trial facing three federal charges related to the alleged purchase of a firearm while addicted to drugs. These charges include making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm, providing false information required by a federal firearms licensed dealer, and possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.

If found guilty on all counts, he could face up to 25 years in prison and fines exceeding $750,000. However, it's highly unlikely that he will receive the maximum sentence if convicted, reports the Express US .

Given the First Lady 's unexpected visit and extensive travel, there's speculation that she may testify as a defense witness in her stepson's case. The first defense witness called to the stand today was the owner of the gun store.

The situation follows the recent verdict in former President Donald Trump 's hush money trial in New York last Friday, where he was found guilty on all 34 counts related to his payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to suppress the story of his extramarital affair before the 2016 election.

Attention has now turned to the president's 54-year-old son who faces three charges of illegal firearm possession, allegedly obtained without properly disclosing his crack cocaine addiction on the federal background check form.

While President Biden is not directly involved in the case, the trial is likely to attract unwanted attention and be used against him in his re-election campaign, including the upcoming first debate with Trump later this month, where the two leading candidates are expected to engage in a heated exchange.

Traveling over the Fourth of July weekend? So is everyone else

More than 50 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the upcoming July Fourth weekend. Traffic in Austin, Texas, is seen here in April.

It seems perfect — the Fourth of July falls on a Tuesday this year, allowing for a nice long weekend to get away. But it might be a little too perfect: Record-setting numbers of people are predicted to travel in the coming days.

AAA, the auto association, is projecting record-breaking travel volumes for the holiday weekend. The numbers are eye-popping: More than 50 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home this weekend.

Most folks will be driving, with 43.2 million people projected to hit the road. Another 4.17 million will likely fly. And more than 3.3 million are predicted to travel by bus, cruise or train.

"A lot of people are going to be traveling, and that's despite high ticket prices, despite inflation. People still have that desire to get out of town and do something fun," AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz told NPR.

Expect packed roadways

Friday is expected to be the busiest day on the road, with traffic on Sunday and Monday looking considerably lighter. AAA counts the holiday weekend as stretching from Friday, June 30, to Tuesday, July 4.

Many of the routes that AAA predicts to be most congested are between cities and nearby beaches: New York City to the Jersey Shore; Boston to Hyannis, Mass.; Washington, D.C., to Rehoboth Beach, Del.; Houston to Galveston, Texas; Portland to Cannon Beach, Oregon.

U.S. pedestrian deaths reach a 40-year high

U.S. pedestrian deaths reach a 40-year high

One factor encouraging drivers is that gas prices have come down considerably from this time last year, when the national average was $4.85 a gallon . "This year we're looking at a national average of about $3.50-ish ," says Diaz. "That's good news for drivers who are getting out of town."

Why so busy? Pent-up demand

People have been flying with a vengeance as the COVID-19 pandemic moves into the rearview. The 4.17 million Americans projected to fly over the holiday weekend is an 11.2% increase over the same weekend last summer — and 6.6% higher than in 2019, before the pandemic began.

"Demand for travel is very strong. We've seen it rising each year as the pandemic has sort of neared the end, and 2023 has just been huge for travel," says Diaz.

The latest workers calling for a better quality of life: airline pilots

In May, industry group Airlines for America predicted that U.S. airlines would carry an all-time record 257 million passengers this summer, from June through August.

Travel went rather smoothly over the recent Memorial Day weekend. But there are reasons to worry that airports could get snarled in the days ahead.

People queue for rescheduled flights at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Tuesday.

Air travel could get messy

There has been a raft of canceled flights in recent days, particularly on United Airlines. The airline canceled thousands of flights over the past week as bad weather caused problems at New York-area airports. United's CEO blamed air traffic control staffing shortages at the Federal Aviation Administration; the flight attendants' union pointed to the airline's internal problems scheduling crews.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told NPR's Morning Edition on Friday that air traffic control staffing issues were not the main cause of the cancellations.

"They're not even the No. 2 cause of these delays," he said. "By yesterday, the cancellation rate across the system, except for United, was back to 2%, which you'd basically consider to be a normal level. They [United] were about 10 times that."

Another factor affecting air travel could be an aviation deadline related to 5G. Buttigieg sent a letter to airlines last week warning that flights could be disrupted because some planes aren't prepared with the right equipment to handle interference from 5G signals that will see their power boosted on July 1. New radio altimeters are required to protect from interference from wireless company transmissions.

Buttigieg says the airlines have known for the last year and a half that they need to update their technology. "The majority of the fleet has been upgraded, but there are still a lot of planes out there that have not," he told NPR.

But he says the FAA will not allow anything unsafe to happen, "which means some of those aircraft may be restricted from operating at certain airports under low visibility conditions. If that happens, we are instructing the airlines to make sure to deal with that in terms of realistic scheduling," Buttigieg said.

Telecoms delay 5G launch near airports, but some airlines are canceling flights

Telecoms delay 5G launch near airports, but some airlines are canceling flights

American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines told The Associated Press that all their planes have been retrofitted and that they don't expect any problems. United said its "mainline" jets were ready but deferred questions about its United Express planes to its regional carriers.

Delta Air Lines told the AP that some 190 of the more than 900 planes in its fleet won't have the updated equipment by the deadline, meaning there could be restrictions on operating those planes in bad weather. The airline said it would route the planes to minimize disruption.

Airlines for America (A4A), a trade group representing the airlines, said in a statement to NPR that its member carriers "are working diligently to ensure fleets are equipped with compliant radio altimeters, but global supply chains continue to lag behind current demand. Carriers have repeatedly communicated this reality to the government. ... Nevertheless, thanks to careful planning, A4A member carriers are confident in their ability to maintain the integrity of their schedules, despite the impending deadline."

Fast Lane for Sustainable Cross-Forth Travel

Forth Road Bridge - public transport corridor - January 31, 2018 01

The Forth Road Bridge will fully reopen tomorrow as a dedicated public transport corridor, giving passengers a head start on their journeys between Edinburgh and Fife.

The news means buses and taxis are now able to enjoy dedicated lanes between the M9 near Newbridge and Halbeath in Fife. This will be particularly welcome at peak times when public transport passengers will be given priority, making their journeys quicker and more reliable.

The reopened bridge also marks the launch of a new campaign, Fife in the Fast Lane , promoting smart public transport journeys in and around Fife. The collaborative marketing campaign by Transport Scotland, Stagecoach and ScotRail highlights using smart tickets for travel on either bus or train, providing more options for buying, collecting and storing your travel tickets.

Routes for walking and cycling across the bridge will also be opened, allowing for active travel participants to enjoy a cleaner, quieter crossing, without the regular vehicle traffic experienced previously.

The move also signals the “Managed Crossing” vision for cross-Forth travel being realised in full. First announced by the Scottish Government in December 2008, two years before the £1.35 billion Forth Replacement Crossing was approved by the Scottish Parliament, the Queensferry Crossing and connecting road upgrades aim to substantially improve the reliability of the M90 for cars and HGVs, providing a resilient route for cross-Forth traffic. This new structure replaces the existing Road Bridge, without attracting additional traffic to the area. It has always been envisaged that any demand for extra capacity on the route would be met by sustainable forms of transport.

With the road orders approved for the Queensferry Crossing for it to officially become a motorway, there are changes to the type of vehicles that can use the new bridge, with non-motorway traffic no longer allowed access to the Queensferry Crossing, instead using the Forth Road Bridge as an alternative.

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said:

“It is tremendously satisfying to see our vision for a managed, dual-bridge strategy come to pass just over nine years after it was first announced. The original decision allowed us to substantially reduce the cost of the overall project by retaining the FRB, therefore reducing the size and cost of the new bridge. Our commitment to encouraging the use of sustainable transport remains resolute and today’s news means that additional demand for cross-Forth travel has the very attractive option of enhanced park and ride facilities at Ferrytoll and Halbeath as well as dedicated priority across the Firth of Forth and beyond.

“To promote this, a joint smart travel campaign ’Fife in the fast lane’ is now underway, highlighting the difference that this - the first dedicated public transport corridor on a bridge in Scotland - plus smart ticketing can make for public transport journeys in and around the Fife area. And for those who like the active life, it’s great to see the cycling and walking route over this iconic bridge also officially opened today.

“As the Forth Replacement Crossing project winds down – with this news and motorway status on the new M90 across the stunning Queensferry Crossing bridge – we can start to see the full benefits of this once in a lifetime infrastructure project and the true value of such a significant piece of investment in the national infrastructure.”

Paul Thomas, Managing Director, Stagecoach East Scotland said:

"Our Express City Connect services crossing the Forth are such a key part of our network in East Scotland, connecting our customers in Fife, Dundee, Perthshire and beyond, to the capital as well as our regular journeys to Edinburgh Airport.  We're delighted to now see the full benefit of the Queensferry Crossing, in creating dedicated bus lanes on the Forth Road bridge, with the aim of reducing congestion for part of the route and improving journey times for public transport users. We are confident that the collaborative approach to a marketing campaign will raise awareness of the high quality public transport options in the area, the range of smart ticketing available and the level of convenience afforded by P&R sites and connectivity across modes. We'll continue to invest in our network of luxury coach services ensuring we can provide the best possible, sustainable travel option across the Forth."

Mark Powles, ScotRail Alliance commercial director, said:

“We’re building the best railway that Scotland’s ever had – and that applies to all of Scotland. Fife is a key part of our network, with direct services to six of Scotland’s seven cities and easy access to the rest of the country.

“To make travel even simpler, we’ve invested in our ScotRail Smartcard – which offers our best value fares, and no more queuing for tickets.”

Amey’s Mark Arndt, Account Director for the Forth Bridges Operating Company, said:

“It’s a privilege for Amey to be responsible for operation of the Forth Bridges at the beginning of this exciting new era.

“Over the past few months we’ve been getting ahead with maintenance on the Forth Road Bridge. Now we’re looking forward to applying our resources and expertise to make a success of its new role as a public transport corridor. This and the new managed motorway over the Queensferry Crossing are truly innovative developments that will make a real difference to the reliability and sustainability of cross-Forth travel for years to come.”

John Lauder, National Director of Sustrans Scotland said:

"The re-opening of the Forth Road Bridge as a sustainable transport corridor is a hugely positive development that sets a precedent within Scotland and acts as an example to the rest of the UK.

"It will benefit not just those commuters who choose to travel on foot or by bike, or those who choose sustainable modes of travel, but outside peak times, it will provide an attractive resource for walking and cycling, providing unparalleled views of the Scotland's magnificent new bridge.

“National Cycle Route 1, which is part of the North Sea Cycle Route, linking all the nations bordering the North Sea, has used the bridge for many years, the re-opening now improves the offer and also provides a nearly continuous off-road greenway route through From Fife to north Edinburgh and into Edinburgh City Centre.

To assist road users understanding of the new road and bridge layouts, as well as the features of the Queensferry Crossing, a guide has been recently published and is available here:  Road Users Guide

25,000 copies of the guide have been produced and have been distributed to stakeholders. The guide has also being sent for display at libraries, petrol stations, bus & train stations and tourist information offices and along the Forth corridor and across the east central Scotland region.

A guide to the active travel corridor is also available here: Walking & Cycling Guide

Still have questions? We got you.

What is a travel agency.

A travel agency supports a team of travel advisors who sell, curate and book travel. Travel advisors consult with clients on where to go, what to do and where to stay. In addition to planning and booking trips, advisors communicate with hotels and other partners (tour companies, cruises, etc.) to ensure each trip goes smoothly.

What is the difference between a travel advisor and a travel agent?

The terms travel agent and travel advisor are used interchangeably. The original term was ‘travel agent,’ but the industry has gone through a bit of a rebrand to showcase the breadth of work that a travel advisor does. We use both, but typically refer to our network of travel advisors simply as Fora Advisors.

Fora Advisors (a.k.a. travel advisors / agents) work with clients to understand their travel needs and handle all the travel arrangements, from booking a hotel for a long weekend to planning a honeymoon to securing a room block for a corporate conference.

What are the benefits of working with a travel agent?

Working with a travel agent helps you level up your travel experience. A travel agent handles all the logistics — on-the-ground transfers, hotel and tour bookings, itinerary planning — so you can get the most out of your trip, without any of the stress.

Plus, our Fora travel agents have insider access to over 5,000 preferred partnerships, meaning you get complimentary perks, priority upgrades and so much more at thousands of locations around the globe. We put serious time and airline mileage into visiting these properties in person so we can give you the up-to-date intel on your destination. We also maintain close relationships with hotel management so you’re treated like the VIP you are from the moment you arrive.

In other words, working with a travel agent unlocks a secret travel world you need to be a part of. But don’t just take our word for it… we have tons of 5-star reviews from happy clients.

Will I get perks & benefits when I work with a Fora Advisor?

Yes — big time. Our travel advisors have access to upgrades & perks at over 5,000 partners around the world. Plus, our partnerships with brands like Virtuoso , Four Seasons , Rosewood and beyond — as well as with smaller, independent boutique hotels — ensure you get treated like a VIP wherever you travel to next.

What types of travel can I book with Fora?

You name it, we book it: resort vacations, safaris , city breaks, vacation home rentals, once-in-a-lifetime adventures, weekend escapes…We do it all.

Do Fora Advisors count as Disney travel agents? What about cruise travel agents?

Absolutely. We provide comprehensive training on just about everything in the travel industry, so our advisors are well equipped to curate any client’s dream trip. (Read more about the benefits of booking with a cruise travel agent .)

I’m planning a group trip. Can Fora Advisors help?

Of course! The more the merrier. Whether you’re organizing a family reunion, honeymoon , bachelorette party or company-wide retreat, we’re happy to help. Just get in touch with your Fora Advisor to begin the process.

How do I make the most of my experience when planning a trip with Fora?

Tell us everything. Let us know if you love golf, must have access to a kids’ club or have a soft spot for off-the-beaten-path travel . Serious allergies or dietary restrictions are also very helpful information to share. That way, we’ll only show you options that fit your wants and needs. We also love to hear about your favorite hotels and trips you’ve enjoyed in the past, because that clues us in to your travel style.

If you’ve never worked with a travel advisor before, get our guide on what to expect when booking with a travel agent .

Wait, I kind of want to be a Fora Advisor myself. How can I join?

We love to hear it! We have a guide on how to become a travel agent . Then, when you’re interested in transforming your passion for travel into a meaningful career, apply to become a Fora Advisor today .

Traveling for July 4th? Here are the worst times to hit the road

forth travel

  • More than 47.7 million Americans are expected to travel between July 1 and 5 for Independence Day.
  • More than 91% of those Americans will be traveling by road.
  • Friday is expected to see the heaviest traffic, with roads especially congested in the afternoons.

Planning to get away for a Fourth of July? Be prepared to share the road with a whole lot of other drivers.

With more than 47.7 million Americans expected to travel between July 1 and 5 for Independence Day, more than 91%, or 43.6 million travelers, will be hitting the roads this year. It’s the second-largest travel volume on record, even with commuting traffic still below pre-pandemic rates.

All those vehicles mean travel volumes are expected to jump 15% over normal, according to Bob Pishue, an analyst with transportation analytics company INRIX.

“ Since Memorial Day , we’ve continued to see growth in the amount of people who are traveling,” Pishue said. “(At) almost every metro area that we looked at, we see (traffic) increases” during the upcoming holiday weekend.

Roads will be packed, in part, because many travelers are still avoiding other transportation options, which are more crowded and come with COVID-19 restrictions like mask mandates.

So how can drivers be sure to avoid the worst bottlenecks? It's all about timing.

“Friday’s the largest spike, no surprise,” Pishue said. “From 1 to 3 p.m. in some areas and 3 to 5 p.m. in others, Friday is going to be the most congested day.”

Heat waves could also play a role in traffic volumes, with some travelers hitting the roads earlier or later to avoid high temperatures while in the car.

Pishue warned that return trips on Monday will face plenty of traffic as well.

“You can definitely expect to hit a few snags in those typical hotspots,” he said.

Vacation rental costs are surging: '‘You better book something now’

Traveling this summer?  Federal mask mandate extended into September for planes, trains, buses

When should I hit the road for the Fourth?

These are the daily worst and best times to travel over the Fourth of July holiday, according to INRIX:

  • Best time: After 7 p.m.
  • Worst time: 4-5 p.m.
  • Best time: Before 12 p.m.
  • Worst time: 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Best time: After 2 p.m.
  • Road congestion not expected Sunday.
  • Best time: Before 1 p.m.

What are the worst corridors and times to travel?

Jill Biden, a Fierce Protector of Hunter Biden, Leaves France for Wilmington

The first lady’s departure from a high-profile foreign trip was a dramatic illustration of the Biden family’s personal priorities. She is expected to return to France on Saturday.

By Katie Rogers

Katie reported from Washington and is the author of a book on modern first ladies.

Jill Biden, the first lady, left President Biden’s side in France on Thursday to make the trans-Atlantic trip back to Delaware, where Hunter Biden is standing trial on gun charges.

The first lady is then scheduled to return to France for a state visit on Saturday, according to her communications director, Elizabeth Alexander.

The departure of the first lady from a high-profile foreign trip was perhaps the most dramatic illustration yet of the Biden family’s personal priorities , which lie some 3,600 miles away from France, in Courtroom 4A of the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building in Wilmington, Del.

Hunter Biden is on trial on charges of lying about his drug use on a form to buy a gun in October 2018, and of illegally possessing the weapon.

The boomerang trip also says something about the resolve of the first lady, who is not a blood relative of Hunter Biden but who is the woman who raised him since he was a small child. Over time, she has become her family’s protective backbone.

“I’m his mom,” she said in an interview in 2022, when Hunter Biden was the subject of a federal investigation. “I mean, I have to support him and love him, and, you know, I’m constantly talking to him, sending him texts; ‘How you doing?’ Because it’s tough.”

A plane ride across the Atlantic Ocean shows just how tough.

The first lady is expected to be in the courtroom again on Friday after spending three days there so far this week. On Monday — her 73rd birthday — she followed hours of mundane interviews with dozens of prospective jurors. At breaks, she offered hugs to Hunter Biden. She comforted her daughter, Ashley Biden, who has also been a fixture in court this week and has at times grown emotional as her brother’s struggles have been cataloged. The first lady’s eyes stayed dry.

The Bidens like to stress that they deal with many of the same challenges — namely, addiction — that most Americans face, but this week, the family’s singularly complicated dynamics have been on display.

On Wednesday, the first lady stepped out of the room for the testimony of Hunter Biden’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, with whom she is said to have an icy relationship. On Thursday, she missed testimony from her former daughter-in-law, Hallie Biden, who dated Hunter Biden after the death of his older brother, Beau.

Because their relationship darkened and descended into drug use, Hallie Biden was a key witness for the prosecution: She had disposed of Hunter Biden’s Colt Cobra gun in a trash can outside a grocery store. The collapse of a plea deal between Mr. Biden and prosecutors last year led to charges that he had lied on a federal application while purchasing that gun.

Dr. Biden will want to be present when defense attorneys begin to call members of the Biden family. The expected list includes Naomi Biden, the first couple’s eldest granddaughter and a vocal defender of her father, and James Biden, the president’s brother, who was the Biden tasked with trying to bring his wayward nephew back from the grip of addiction.

Hunter Biden and the first lady, whom he calls mom, have a close relationship, according to people who know them. But the nature of their bond is different than the one Hunter Biden has with others in the family — namely Valerie Biden Owens, his aunt. She was the Biden who first moved in to raise Mr. Biden’s boys after his first wife, Neilia, and infant daughter, Naomi, were killed in a car accident in December 1972.

Hunter and Beau Biden were attached to Ms. Biden Owens, and their uncle, James Biden, who had also stepped in to raise the boys before their father started dating Jill Biden in 1975. The Bidens married in 1977.

Growing up, it was Beau Biden, Mr. Biden’s elder son who died in 2015, who shared her sense of humor. Hunter Biden wrote in his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” that he at times felt left out of their jokes. But he also praised her “for doing a great job, especially with everyone watching.”

In her own memoir, “Where the Light Enters,” Dr. Biden wrote that Hunter Biden was the Biden son “more like me.”

“He didn’t want to talk about his feelings as much,” she wrote, “and he didn’t always know how to express them as a kid, but he would always show you with his actions — he was warm and loving.”

Decades later, he would clash explosively with Dr. Biden when she helped lead a family effort to get him clean. In early 2019, when Hunter Biden was again reeling from addiction, Dr. Biden called him and invited him for dinner at the family home in Wilmington. It turned out to be an intervention. Hunter Biden stormed out of the house and left for California, where he continued to use, he wrote in his memoir, until he met his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden.

The extent of his addiction problems was not made public until the contents of a laptop he had left at a repair shop were publicly disseminated on conservative websites ahead of the 2020 election.

In the tumultuous years since, the first lady has tried to keep him close and telegraph her support by including Hunter Biden and his family, who live in Los Angeles, in East Wing events like the White House Easter Egg Roll. After he took up painting , she hung one of his pieces in her East Wing office.

She also publicly asserted his innocence as Hunter Biden was investigated for the gun purchase and tax evasion issues, the source of another round of charges for which he will stand trial later this year.

“Everybody and their brother has investigated Hunter,” the first lady told NBC News in the fall of 2022 . “They keep at it, and at it and at it. I know that Hunter is innocent. I love my son, and I will keep looking forward.”

That is now for a jury to decide.

What to Know About Biden’s Trip to France

The international trek offers the president a chance to commemorate D-Day and to contrast with his predecessor.

What to Know: Biden’s Trip to France

forth travel

Evan Vucci | AP

President Joe Biden is welcomed by French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, left, after arriving at Orly Airport south of Paris on Wednesday, June 5.

Key Takeaways

  • The trip marks Biden’s first state visit to France.
  • The president will deliver remarks commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
  • Along with French President Emmanuel Macron, Biden is also expected to talk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

President Joe Biden arrived in France on Wednesday for a visit during which he will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces landed in Normandy and paved the way for the liberation of Europe in World War II. The trip also marks Biden’s first state visit to France.

The historic D-Day operation included nearly 160,000 troops from Britain , the U.S. , Canada and other nations, and helped lead to the defeat of Nazi Germany. On Thursday, Biden is expected to deliver remarks at a ceremony in Normandy commemorating the event, and to participate in a wreath-laying. At least 25 heads of state are expected to be in France to mark the occasion.

Did You Know?

The anniversary provides the perfect opportunity for Biden to weave together symbolism with policy and politics. Along with falling in the midst of his reelection campaign – and offering him opportunities to contrast with his opponent, former President Donald Trump – the visit to America's oldest ally comes as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is in its second year, the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East continues to escalate and China looms large over Taiwan, threatening its independence.

World War II “showed the world the value of strong alliances and partnerships, which is a lesson that continues to resonate strongly today, both in Europe and, quite frankly, well beyond Europe,” John Kirby, White House national security communications advisor, told reporters earlier this week during a preview of Biden’s trip.

“President Biden has made revitalizing our relationships a key priority, recognizing that we are stronger when we act together and that today’s challenges require global perspectives, global approaches, global responses, and multilateral effort and cooperation,” Kirby said. “France is our oldest ally, and this visit will underscore continued U.S.-French leadership on a range of consequential global issues.”

forth travel

Biden, who will be in France for five days, is also scheduled to deliver remarks Friday at Pointe Du Hoc – where American soldiers on D-Day scaled cliffs to seize German artillery. He’s expected to focus on the importance of fighting for democracy.

“You can point to real lives that were impacted at Pointe du Hoc,” Kirby said. “You can point to real blood that was spilt in pursuit of that loftier goal. And you can tell stories about real men who climbed real cliffs and faced real bullets and real danger in the pursuit of something a whole hell of a lot bigger than themselves.”

Following the anniversary commemorations, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, will host Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for the state visit. During a bilateral meeting between Biden and Macron, the two presidents will discuss continuing to support Ukraine, the war in Gaza and efforts to combat climate change, Kirby said.

Macron is reportedly weighing sending French military trainers to Ukraine – a potential move that’s sparked concern among some allies as it could lead to increased tensions with Russia. Notably, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be in France this week as well, and is expected to meet with both Macron and Biden.

Biden follows a long line of U.S. presidents who have visited France to commemorate D-Day. His trip comes 40 years after former President Ronald Reagan’s famous speech at Pointe du Hoc, where he stressed the importance of allies.

"We in America have learned bitter lessons from two World Wars: It is better to be here ready to protect the peace, than to take blind shelter across the sea, rushing to respond only after freedom is lost. We’ve learned that isolationism never was and never will be an acceptable response to tyrannical governments with an expansionist intent," Reagan said during remarks on the 40th anniversary of D-Day.

In the background of Biden’s trip, of course, is the 2024 presidential election – the outcome of which could impact the relationship between the U.S., France and other NATO allies. Trump, for example, has repeatedly called out NATO members for not devoting enough money to defense, and has threatened not to come to the aid of those who don’t meet the alliance’s defense spending target – something he’s also sought to frame as a negotiating tactic.

While in France, Biden also plans to speak with U.S. and international veterans who served in World War II, and to visit a cemetery honoring fallen American soldiers during World War I. During a Trump trip to France in 2018, the former president did not visit the WWI Aisne-Marne American Cemetery due to what the White House at the time said was poor weather. Later reporting from The Atlantic said Trump criticized the dead buried there as “losers,” which Trump denied.

The Best No-Fee Travel Credit Cards

a person reaching for a credit card in their wallet

Opinions, reviews, analyses & recommendations are the author’s alone, and have not been reviewed, endorsed, or approved by any of these entities. This page does not include all card companies or all available card offers.

One of the easiest ways to save money traveling is by using credit cards (responsibly) to collect points and miles . This essentially transforms your everyday spending into free flights, free hotel stays, and other awesome travel perks.

Not only does this stretch your travel budget but it levels up your travel experience, providing free upgrades, lounge access, and much, much more.

Whether you want to be on the road for longer, take more trips, or simply save money on your next vacation, points and miles can get you there.

However, most of the best travel credit cards have annual fees (sometimes huge ones).

While annual fees are usually worth it for frequent travelers (you can get much more value out of a card than its annual fee), if you’re new to all of this or don’t travel that much, you may want to get a no-fee card first.

And there are a lot of no-fee cards out there. Which one do you pick?

Here is my list of the best no-fee travel credit cards so you can start earning points toward free travel today:

Table of Contents

1. The Bilt Rewards Mastercard

2. capital one ventureone rewards credit card, 3. chase freedom unlimited®, cards with low fees.

Bilt credit card

You can transfer points 1:1 to travel partners, including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, United, Emirates, Hawaiian, Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, Air France/KLM, Hyatt, and IHG. The fact that you can transfer Bilt points to American Airlines and Alaska Airlines really sets this card apart as no other card’s points transfer to these airlines. Amassing Bilt points is the only way to get these points without having an American or Alaska card.

Bilt also integrates with point.me , a handy search and booking engine for award flights.

This card offers:

  • 1x points on rental payments
  • 2x points on travel
  • 3x points on dining
  • American Airlines and Alaska Airlines as transfer partners (it’s the only card that does)
  • Rent Day benefits: monthly giveaways and challenges as well as 6x points on dining, 4x points on travel, and 2x on spending on the 1st of the month
  • Access to the Bilt Milestone Rewards program (where you get more perks and earning power the more points you accumulate)
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption Protection and Trip Delay Reimbursement
  • No foreign transaction fees

The Bilt card is absolutely a no-brainer for renters who love to travel. To learn more, read my full Bilt Review . It is the card I use the most right now (especially on rent days).

—> LEARN MORE

  • Earn 20,000 miles once you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening
  • 1.25x points on all purchases
  • 5x points on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • Travel accident and car rental insurance

LEARN MORE —> LEARN MORE

  • bonus_miles_full
  • 1.5% cash back on all purchases
  • 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Travel
  • 3% cash back on restaurants and drugstores

If the cards above are a little too basic for your needs and you want something more intermediate, here’s a quick list of travel credit cards with affordable fees:

card_name ($95 annual fee) – 3x points on dining, online grocery purchases, and select streaming services, 2x points on travel (5x when booked through Chase Travel (SM) , travel protections, and a $50 annual hotel credit when you book and prepay through Chase Travel (SM) .

card_name ($95 annual fee) – 2x points on all purchases, 5x points on hotels/rental cars booked on Capital One travel, $100 Global Entry/TSA pre-check credit, 2 airport lounge visits per year.

card_name ($95 annual fee) – If you’re a business owner, this card offers 3x points per dollar on the first $150,000 spent each year on shipping, internet, phone, travel, and online advertising. It also offers free cards for employees.

While fee-based cards have better earning structures and travel benefits , if you’re new to the points and miles game, the idea of forking out for an annual fee might put you off from travel cards entirely. But if you love to travel (or want to travel more), not collecting points and miles is the biggest mistake you could make .

No-fee cards are a great place to start so that you can begin to work towards free flights and hotel stays today, without having to think about whether you’re getting enough value out of the card to justify the annual fee.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Need Help Finding Activities for Your Trip? Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can find cool walking tours, fun excursions, skip-the-line tickets, private guides, and more.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
