1. Winchester Mystery House

Winchester Mystery House

San Jose’s Winchester Mystery House was built in 1884 by Sarah Winchester, the widow of the Winchester Rifle magnate William Winchester.

Originally, it reached seven stories in height; however, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake did some damage. The house now stands at four stories.

During a total of the home’s 38 years of construction, Sarah’s belief that the house was haunted by those who had been killed by a Winchester rifle led her to have her house built without the direction of an architect.

As such, there are numerous peculiarities in the construction such as stairways and doors leading nowhere.

The house has 40 bedrooms, but only one working bathroom. She believed that these steps she was taking during construction served to confuse the spirits.

The house now serves as a popular San Jose’s tourist attraction.

On the premises of the Winchester compound sits the American Fire Arms Museum.

Learn the history of the Winchester rifle through exhibits and displays of the rifles throughout history.

San Jose’s Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is a magnificent museum that is constructed in the architectural style favored by the ancient Egyptians to give you an immersion in their culture.

It also houses the largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the western United States.

There is also a planetarium on the premises that has shows on the weekends.

3. San Jose Museum of Art

The San Jose Museum of Art has an impressive permanent collection of works from West Coast artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

There is a historic wing that was originally built in 1892 for the San Jose Post Office which was used for until 1937.

From 1937 to 1969, the building was used as the City of San Jose Public Library.

It was acquired by the Fine Arts Gallery Association and the new wing of the museum opened in 1991.

This is one of the only museums to focus on West Coast artists.

4. Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph

Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph was originally a small adobe church built for the benefit of the settlers as opposed to the native Indians.

Construction began in 1803 in the town originally called El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe.

Earthquakes in 1818 and 1822 damaged the original structure beyond repair, and a second adobe church was built to replace it beginning in 1835.

The second church was also damaged by a major earthquake in the 1868 Hayward Earthquake.

The third church was built in 1869 only to be destroyed by a fire in 1875.

A fourth temporary structure was built a few blocks away.

The fifth and final building is the magnificent Basilica that stands today.

Construction began in 1876 and the church was finally granted Basilica status by the Vatican in 1997.

The stained glass windows alone make this one of the most beautiful places in California .

6. Alum Rock Park

Alum Rock Park is the oldest municipal park in California. It has 13 miles of biking and walking trails of varying difficulty.

From 1891 to 1901, access to the park came in the form of a Narrow Gauge Railroad that originated in downtown San Jose.

Happy Hollow Park and Zoo

Happy Hollow Park and Zoo sits on 16 acres within Kelley Park, and encompasses a zoo and amusement park providing your family with plenty of things to see.

No trip to San Jose would be complete without a visit to the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden .

A Heritage Rose is one that has been bred for many years, sometimes centuries.

At the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, you will encounter over 3,600 different rose bushes representing more than 2,700 different varieties.

While most of these varieties originated in Europe, there are many here that were discovered in the gardens of older homes, old cemeteries, and some actually discovered alongside a dirt road.

The San Jose Heritage Rose Garden is maintained by a loyal army of volunteers with all gardening materials financed by the City of San Jose.

Public admission to the garden is free, but donations are always welcome, and if you want to volunteer, they can always use the help.

The San Jose Flea Market has been a local hotspot for the past 59 years.

The Almaden Quicksilver Mine is the oldest and most productive mercury mine in history.

The mining operations of 135 years are chronicled at this museum.

This historic mansion is actually built in 1906 in the general layout of a Maltese Cross with a long center section that houses a solarium.

The architecture is that of a Mediterranean Villa and is 41,000 sq ft. The property used to boast its own Post Office, Railway station, and power plant.

Exhibitions are both historic and contemporary and are changed every six to twelve weeks.

This San Jose museum celebrates the art of quilting with a collection of over 800 quilts, and celebrates textiles through the various innovative uses of cloth fibers throughout cultures and history.

There is also a research library with more than 500 books on quilting and textiles throughout history.

The first Friday of every month offers free admission from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm giving you the perfect excuse to go spend a fun and educational couple of hours while you’re visiting San Jose.

18. Mountain Winery

Formerly known as the Paul Masson Wineries, the Mountain Winery is well known for its wine tasting and for its outdoor theater that hosts numerous concerts throughout the year.

The winery itself is a historical site. They are now best known for their summer concert series.

Enjoy a night out with dinner at a show. Starting with a 3-course gourmet meal at La Cresta Restaurant followed by music provided by both classic bands and modern superstars.

For something different, you can experience the Wine Deck and enjoy wine selections paired with a selection of cheese and charcuterie or upgrade that selection to a seafood feast.

Both the restaurant and the wine deck are only open on concert nights and reservations are recommended. Truly one of the best things to do.

19. Villa Montalvo

Also just outside San Jose in the Santa Cruz Mountains lies the Montalvo Arts Center . This cultural center and park surround the mansion, which is a historic landmark.

There are a number of hiking trails as well as a number of gardens filled with elaborate marble statues and several different garden structures.

The mansion itself is primarily used for weddings and other events but the property as a whole is definitely worth the trip and should make its way on to your list of places to visit.

20. San Jose McEnery Convention Center

Located in the center of downtown, the San Jose McEnery Convention Center sponsors numerous events throughout the year.

From Auto shows to ComiCon, there is always something going on there.

This 550,000 square foot structure has resident art displays outside the entrance on San Carlos Street including the tile mural project and the interactive sculpture called The Idea Tree.

If there doesn’t happen to be a convention or show that piques your interest, a short visit to the mural and Idea Tree should be a part of the trip.

Los Gatos Creek Trail offers 9.7 miles of biking and pedestrian trails for hours of family fun.

22. San Pedro Square Market

San Jose’s San Pedro Square Market has a great selection of restaurants for a long leisurely lunch outdoors or a gourmet dinner.

There is live music 6 nights a week, and most restaurants are open until 9:00 pm.

San Pedro Square is also home to an important piece of San Jose history.

El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe was the first city founded in the Californias in 1777.

The Peralta Adobe House , built in 1797, is the last remaining structure from the original Pueblo.

The Peralta House can be toured by appointment only.

The Fallon House is another historic landmark in San Jose.

Thomas Fallon and his wife Carmel first moved to San Jose in 1855 and built their home shortly thereafter.

Their goal was to build the “grandest home in the county.” The house became the Italia hotel in 1900, and was acquired by the City of San Jose in 1990.

Like the Peralta House, the Fallon House can be toured by appointment only.

With the food, shopping, music, and history, the San Pedro Square Market is one of the best things to do in the downtown area of San Jose.

An important part of Santana Row is Park Valencia where live music and public events take place.

Skyline Boulevard is one of the most scenic drives in Northern California and possibly the entire state.

Also known as State Route 35, this two-lane highway runs along the ridge by the Santa Cruz Mountains from San Francisco south.

It goes through Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Jose, and San Mateo. It offers incredible views of the Redwoods, the Pacific Ocean, and San Francisco Bay.

During the winter, snow at the higher elevations draws families out for fun in the snow.

27. Computer History Museum

What would a visit to San Jose and the Silicon Valley region be if there wasn’t a Computer History Museum ?

Originally a part of the now defunct Digital Equipment Corporation, the museum moved to the Silicon Valley area in 1996.

This San Jose icon is one of the great places to visit is said to have the largest collection of computer artifacts in the world.

The exhibits and collections are updated regularly as additions such as the IBM exhibit and most recently the donations of source code by Adobe and Microsoft.

The museum is open daily, and there are family tours available every Saturday.

Make sure you check to make sure they are open because private events will close the museum to the public.

Home of the San Jose Sharks NHL Hockey Team, the SAP Center is considered one of the best places to attend an event.

The SAP Center in San Jose is also home to numerous other concerts and events. In 2012 and 2016, the USA Olympic Gymnastics Trials took place there.

Travel Tips

When traveling in the San Jose area, you will be best off with access to a rental car.

While most of the attractions are within the city itself, there are several important attractions that will require you to drive.

While in the area, it would be a shame not to venture out to visit parts of San Francisco , the Redwood Forest, or Yosemite National Park.

San Jose can be a convenient starting point for these excursions.

Several of the things to do in San Jose are reliant on what season you choose to visit.

While the climate is similar to that found in the Mediterranean, if you choose to travel in the Santa Cruz Mountains or into Yosemite, you will most likely run into snow.

If you are flying into the area, one of the travel hacks of note is that you can actually find better deals flying into San Jose Airport than you would flying into either San Francisco or Oakland .

Whether you've come for business or not, you'll find a lot to do in your spare time. San Jose hosts a bunch of attractions that don't take too long to enjoy: Burn an hour or two downtown at the San Jose Museum of Art and the Children'

Where do Silicon Valley tycoons go to spend their money? To Santana Row, a chic shopping development just a short drive west of downtown San Jose. Here you'll find delectable eateries, a movie theater and designer shops like Gucci and Kate Spade. And the apartments and the Hotel Valencia built above the ground-floor businesses create an urban vibe that particularly takes off at night when Santana Row becomes a nightlife hub. Many recent travelers claim that this is the best people-watching spot in the city. Also keep your eyes on the parking lot: Exotic sports cars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris are often spotted here.

The shops and restaurants open around 10 a.m. and close around 9 p.m., although many that cater to the late-night crowds will stay open well past then. Visitors should be aware that parking can be extremely limited at busy times, so you might have to leave your car across the street at the less-trendy Westfield Valley Fair mall. Architecture buffs will want to set aside some time to see the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph, a large Roman Catholic church located in downtown San Jose. This structure is actually the fifth reincarnation and sits on the site of former basilicas that were damaged by earthquakes or fire in the 19th century. It draws in visitors with its architectural beauty, both inside and out. Reviewers were particularly enchanted by its domes and stained-glass windows (of which there are 39 colorful panes to behold). Aside from its impressive structural elements, the cathedral wins praise for its peaceful atmosphere.

The church offers a daily Mass (in both English and Spanish on the weekends), but you can also view its interior during a tour. You'll find the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in downtown San Jose on Market Street. If you'd like to schedule a formal tour, you'll have to fill out a reservation form online, which can be accessed on the cathedral's website . Entering the church is free, but it suggests a $2 donation per person if you schedule a tour.

Along with a tomb replica, the museum's many sarcophagi and mummies thrill most visitors. And many appreciate the detailed descriptions and timelines adjacent to the displays. A few recent travelers express mild disappointment, however, saying the museum may not appeal to those with a surface interest in ancient Egypt. Still, this off-the-beaten-path attraction (many locals said they didn't even know it existed) offers a unique and educational (not to mention affordable) alternative to some of the area's other top to-dos. What's more, you'll also find a planetarium on-site that screens three different space films.

The Tech Interactive The Tech Interactive

The Tech Interactive is right at home in San Jose, the capital of Silicon Valley. This blue-domed facility in downtown brings in schoolchildren by the busload – literally. This place thrives off the curiosity of young people and offers plenty of hands-on learning opportunities that serve to educate museumgoers about scientific concepts, such as space exploration, biotechnology, clean energy, genetics and the science of sound. 

Recent visitors raved about the fun, yet educational exhibits for their children like the Social Robots gallery, an area that allows kids to design, build and program a real robot using sensors, controllers and actuators. The museum also has an on-site Imax theater that screens both educational and feature films. Those who ventured in without young children offered a word of caution for future visitors, saying the facility is better suited to elementary school kids and not necessarily an entertaining stop for adults or teens. 

Children's Discovery Museum Children's Discovery Museum

Like the nearby Tech Museum , the Children's Discovery Museum offers hands-on experiences for kids as well as some interesting displays for adults. Recent travelers seem to have several favorite exhibits, but the WaterWays –  a large network of water-filled tubes through which colorful balls travel –  stands out above the rest. Parents like the sections of the museum that are designed for specific ages like the Wonder Cabinet, which caters to children age 4 and younger and encourages  exploration in a safe and stimulating setting (like an art studio) . And although there is a food court (which some say is a bit expensive), you're also permitted to bring your own lunch or snacks.

Located in downtown, the Children's Discovery Museum welcomes visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission costs $13 for both kids and adults. For more information, check out the museum's website .

San Jose Museum of Art San Jose Museum of Art

The San Jose Art Museum brings a bit of high culture to the downtown area. Its collection focuses on 20th- and 21st-century works in a variety of media –  painting, video installation, photography and more. The temporary exhibits frequently feature a local Northern California artist, which gives some personality to the space. Although some reviewers remark on the museum's small size and limited collection, they do say it's worth a visit thanks to its interesting exhibits and reasonable admission prices. What's more, most appreciated that the museum can be viewed in a matter of hours thanks to its manageable size. 

The art museum sits along Cesar Chavez Park across from the Tech Museum . Entrance costs $10 for adults and $5 for youths ages 7 to 17; children 6 and younger enter for free. Japanese Friendship Garden Japanese Friendship Garden free

Visitors frequently describe this small garden as "tranquil" and a nice place to let the kids run around. Built in 1965 as a symbol of everlasting friendship between the city of San Jose and its sister city, Okayama, Japan, the garden features Japanese bridges, waterfalls and koi fish (a favorite attraction among youngsters).

Recent visitors said the garden provided a peaceful backdrop for a relaxing stroll, though some were disappointed with its size, describing it as underwhelming. Because of its picturesque landscaping and romantic ambiance, it's also a popular spot for engagement photos and outdoor wedding ceremonies, according to reviewers.

California's Great America California's Great America

It's no Disneyland , but this theme park in the Santa Clara neighborhood (about a 15-minute drive from downtown San Jose) will surely satisfy your family's craving for thrilling rides, water park fun and live entertainment. While the high-flying coasters like Flight Deck steal most of the attention (and the wait times), the theme park offers a wide variety of carnivalesque booths along with a few entertaining performances. You'll find many of the families with younger children enjoying the smaller thrills of Planet Snoopy. And to make this into a great summer attraction, Great America also offers the Boomerang Bay Water Park and its fun slides, cabana and wave pool.

Most visitors recommend planning a trip to California's Great America if you've got kids in tow, praising the manageable size and fun water park. However, more than a few reviewers complained of the overpriced, tasteless food offered on-site and suggested skipping meals inside the park in favor of the neighborhood's more affordable options.

Winchester Mystery House Winchester Mystery House

Across the street from hip Santana Row , the Winchester Mystery House is both a piece of San Jose history and, according to some, a tourist trap. The incredibly superstitious Sarah Winchester –  heiress to the firearm fortune –  built this monstrous structure in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The estate boasts 161 rooms and a bevy of mind-boggling designs, such as a staircase to nowhere, secret passageways, a séance room and the Hall of Fires, which is equipped with four fireplaces and three hot air registers . While some visitors appreciate the architectural oddities, others quickly grow bored of the furniture-less rooms. Still, you might consider a visit: The house is one of San Jose's oldest homes, and some people won't believe you've truly seen the city if you don't make a quick stop here. What's more, it's a California Historical Landmark. Reviewers who visited with tweens and teens said it proved an entertaining activity for the whole family.

Just a short drive west of downtown, the Winchester Mystery House offers Behind-the-Scenes, Mansion and Grand Estate tours (prices vary by tour type, ranging from $25 to $44 per person). The estate maintains a complicated schedule of operating hours, so check the website before your trip.

1.  Visit the original headquarters of Apple, Google or HP

Silicon Valley owes much to the humble suburban garage. It’s where Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the first Apple computer, where Hewlett Packard (HP) developed their first audio oscillator and where Google first googled. Though they’ve moved on to grander office spaces, the original headquarters of all three companies remain an important part of San Jose history; the Apple and HP garages have even been listed as National Historic Landmarks. 

2.  Get lost in the Winchester Mystery House

Widow Sarah Winchester, heiress to her husband’s Winchester Rifle fortune, began construction on the sprawling Winchester Mansion in 1886. She believed the house was haunted by those who had died at the hand of the Winchester rifle and by the time of her death, 36 years later, the still incomplete house had 160 rooms, 2000 doors and dozens of staircases that often led nowhere in an effort to confuse the malevolent spirits. 

3.  Visit a tech museum

4.  Stop and smell the Heritage Rose Garden

Get a sense of the San Jose of yesteryear at the Heritage Rose Garden and Japanese Friendship Garden. At the rose garden (free, open daily) admire 2,800 varieties of heritage, modern and miniature roses. The Japanese Friendship Garden, built in Kelley Park in 1965, has a koi pond, flowing brook, waterfalls and bridges that honor the friendship between San Jose and its sister city Okayama, Japan.

5.  Act like a kid at the Children’s Discovery Museum

San Jose’s family friendly credentials boast two crowning jewels: the Children’s Discovery Museum and Happy Hollow Park and Zoo . Happy Hollow, located within the larger Kelley Park, introduces kids to a small but interesting collection of animals from around the world including meerkats, capybara, a giant anteater and their newest addition, a male jaguar named Kianto. At the Children’s Discovery Museum, kids play their way through smartly designed exhibits like “mammoth discovery” and an outdoor learning environment called Bill’s Backyard.

6.  Go for a hike at Almaden Quicksilver County Park

San Jose has several county parks that are perfect for hiking and other outdoor activities. At Almaden Quicksilver County Park , once the world’s second largest mercury mine, you can hike among the tunnels and tracks left behind by the massive mining operation. Alum Rock Park , one of the state’s oldest municipal parks, was once known as a health spa thanks to 27 natural mineral springs that are still around today. At Joseph D. Grant County Park , Santa Clara County’s largest, 51 miles of trails wind their way through the foothills of the Diablo Range.

7.  Ride at California’s Great America

Thrillseekers, look no further than San Jose for two of the best amusement parks in the state. At California’s Great America , seven roller coasters, including the “floorless” coaster Patriot, will send you screaming. Raging Waters , San Jose’s beloved water park, will help you beat the Valley heat on rides that range from the family-friendly wave pool and endless river to daredevil drops and steep, twisting slides.

8.  Explore the universe at the NASA Ames Research Center

The search is on for extraterrestrials at the NASA Ames Research Center , where you can also learn about past space missions and see what it’s like to live and work in space. For a glimpse beyond our galaxy, head up to the Lick Observatory high above the city on Mt. Hamilton. During their Summer Series, visitors can learn more about astronomy and view the stars through the historic observatory’s two powerful telescopes.

9.  Admire art at San Jose Museum of Art

Downtown San Jose has a vibrant art scene. The largest museum, the San Jose Museum of Art , houses a collection of modern works from the 20th century. At the more intimate San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art , three rotating galleries display exhibits from all corners of the visual arts. Next door, the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles , the first American museum dedicated to the craft, has a fantastic collection of vibrant cloth, blankets and garments. For a less structured view of the city’s artwork, take a walk downtown where a robust public arts program has drenched the streets in color. A free self-guided map is available online.

10.  Root for the Sharks

During hockey season, the San Jose Sharks play home games at the SAP Center , the “Shark Tank,” downtown. Their practice facility, Solar4America Ice (Shark’s Ice) down the road, is also open to the public and when the team isn’t on the ice, you can rent a pair of skates and hit the rink. The San Jose Earthquakes play at PayPal Park  (formerly Avaya Stadium) which opened in 2015 with space for 18,000 screaming fans.

11.  Find a treasure at the San Jose Flea Market

Opened in 1960, the open-air  San Jose Flea Market has become a world all its own with up to 1500 vendors setting up shop on Sundays (the market is open Wed, Fri-Sun) selling everything from fresh produce to fine collectibles. On West San Carlos Street, several permanent antiques stores lineup along Antiques Row, including the massive Antiques Colony . Just down the street, Moon Zoom , and  Black and Brown's  racks of retro clothing will keep you entertained for hours.

12.  Shop unique goods at Midtown Arts Mercantile

Midtown Arts Mercantile , a renovated complex in a formerly industrial neighborhood which houses Apis Floral and Good Karma Bikes , is a good place to start. If you’re looking for bigger brands like Kate Spade, Madewell and H&M, visit the nicely designed open air mall Santana Row . 

13.  Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum

The Rosicrucians, a community of mystics hundreds of years old who study the metaphysical laws of the universe, are alive and well in San Jose. Their homebase, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, an oddball institution that is part-history, part-mindblowing fringe philosophy, houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in the Western US. Among the display cases you’ll find cat mummies, sarcophagi and a replica of a rock-cut tomb from Middle Egypt

14.  Eat Portuguese/ Japanese/ Vietnamese

In Little Portugal, check out the spectacular Five Wounds Portuguese National Church  and the Michelin-starred Portuguese restaurant, Adega . In Little Saigon, authentic Vietnamese restaurants and a New Year’s Tet celebration serve the largest population outside of Vietnam. In Japantown, one of the last three remaining historic Japantowns in the country, you’ll find the Japanese American Museum and seasonal events like the spring Nikkei Matsuri and the summer Obon Festival.

15.  Celebrate the seasons at the Plaza de Cesar Chavez

There’s no better way to celebrate the seasons in San Jose than by visiting the two acre park at the city’s center, the Plaza de Cesar Chavez. Around the winter holidays, the plaza is home to Christmas in the Park, a decades old tradition of animatronic elves and decorated Christmas trees alongside a skating rink and carnival rides for revelers of all ages. In the summer, free concerts play every Thursday and, when the San Jose Jazz Festival is on, the main stage is set up here. Between events, take the kids for a romp in the plaza’s spouting water feature.

16.  Step back in time with History San Jose

Fourteen-acres of Kelley Park along with 32 homes, businesses and landmarks arranged as a small town make up  History San Jose. Among the historic structures, you can participate in the inner workings of an early print shop, get a cone at the ice cream shop and look inside Victorian-era homes. History San Jose also manages the Peralta Adobe-Fallon House built in 1797 by San Jose’s first resident and second mayor, Manuel Gonzalez.

Established in 1927, the Municipal Rose Garden has blossomed to become one of the most visited attractions of the city. Rows and rows of roses define much of this five-acre park in the middle of a lovely city neighborhood, with peak blooming occurring throughout the month of May.

The Winchester Mystery House was the past residence of Sara Winchester, widow of William Winchester, and heiress to the massive Winchester fortune from the production of the Winchester repeating rifle–also known as "the gun that won the West."

After the untimely death of her husband and infant child, Sara Winchester moved to San Jose in 1886 and began a nearly 50-year renovation project on an eight-room farmhouse. Over the course of five decades, Sara Winchester created what is now known as the Winchester Mystery House, hosting thousands of visitors each year.

What makes this popular tourist attraction so mysterious is the renovation choices made by Sara Winchester. Local lore attributes the false stairs, misleading doors, and 160 different rooms as a measure to evade paranormal spirits stemming from her family's past. After living in the Bay Area for the last few years and making more than a dozen trips down to San Jose in that time, these are my recommendations for the top things to do in San Jose, California to really explore what this South Bay city has to offer.

As the best shopping and dining destination in the city, Santana Row is one of the best places to visit in San Jose if you enjoy poking your head into interesting stores.

This is the ritzy upscale part of town and even if you don’t have the cash to spend, it’s a fun place to simply walk around, window shop, people watch, and look at nice cars.

Think of it as the equivalent of what Beverly Hills is to LA or Nob Hill is to San Francisco.

In addition to the shopping, there are quite a few bars and restaurants in Santana Row, such as El Jardin, which is perfect to visit for a margarita on a hot summer night. Just note that most bars in the area close up by 11 pm.

Get Your Sugar Fix at Psycho Donuts

Although not as good as Bob’s Donuts in San Francisco, Psycho Donuts is a fun and tasty donut shop in San Jose, if only for their originality. 

They specialize in wacky and over-the-top unique donut flavors. When I was there last I tried their donut with peanut butter drizzle and cereal bits on top.

They also have flavors such as the Canadian Morning Squeal with maple icing and bacon bits, and the Dead Elvis with bananas, bacon, peanut butter, jelly, and a cream filling.

Their donuts are really  rich, so you probably only need one or you might want to share depending on what you order.

Update: Psycho Donuts used to be located in downtown San Jose but they’ve since moved to Campbell (not too far from downtown) and the Westfield Valleyfair Mall. 

Grab a Bite to Eat at San Pedro Square Market

One of the best things to do in downtown San Jose, San Pedro Square Market is the marketplace that just keeps on giving. 

There are so many eateries to choose from here that you’ll probably have trouble deciding what to try first.

This is also a good place to sample craft beer at either Market Beer Co. or the Market Bar. 

Some vendors validate parking so ask for validation with purchases so you can enjoy free parking.

If you’re after more of a caffeine buzz to start off a day in San Jose, B2 Coffee has some of the tastiest coffee in the city!

Get Spooked at the Winchester Mystery House

If you’re looking for unusual things to do in San Jose, the Winchester Mystery House is an odd mansion that exists right next to Santana Row.

The house was built by Sarah Winchester, the spouse of William Winchester, from the family that created the popular Winchester Rifle Company.

After Sarah lost both her child and her husband, she was convinced that the spirits of all the people killed by Winchester rifles were coming back to haunt and punish her.

She started building the Winchester House to confuse the spirits and continuously built and remodeled the house until her death. 

She kept carpenters on a rotating shift so there was always work being done on the house at any given time while she was living in it.

It’s an eccentric and interesting stop in San Jose and worth visiting at least once if you’re in the area…as long as you’re not easily spooked. 😉

Do a Self-Guided Tour of San Jose Craft Beer

The craft beer culture in San Jose is becoming more of a thing, as it is for the rest of the Bay Area. 

There are a few craft breweries to check out in the San Jose area now, and a few pubs for taste-testing a variety of craft beers.

One of my favorite beer spots is   Original Gravity , which offers enough tasty beers to last you for days.

With 15 rotating taps, you can pretty much find any style and a multitude of breweries on tap from around the West Coast and beyond. 

I was happy to find my favorite beer, Ballast Point Sculpin pouring on nitro. A craft beer girl’s dream come true.

There are a few breweries in the San Jose area that are a must-visit as well, including Hermitage Brewing , Strike Brewing , Clandestine Brewing , and Faultline Brewing in Sunnyvale.

And, if you’re as into craft beer as I am, other bars to find a crafty pint around San Jose besides Original Gravity are ISOBeers and Good Karma .

Another option, if you want a fun way to explore San Jose’s craft beer scene is to hop on the San Jose Brew Bike.

They offer private and group tours that take you around to two bars/restaurants in town to sample the beer. The catch is that you have to pedal the “brew bike” to get to your stops.

Cheer on One of the Local Sports Teams

If there’s one thing San Jose locals take seriously it’s their sports teams.

If you’ve never seen a professional hockey game before, catching a San Jose Sharks game at the SAP Center is a unique experience.  

Not a fan of hockey? San Jose also has a professional soccer team called the San Jose Earthquakes that play at Avaya Stadium. 

And lastly, even though the 49ers are technically San Francisco’s professional football team, they actually play in San Jose. 

So if you’re looking to experience an NFL game, head over to Levi Stadium. 

San Jose is a great city for sports enthusiasts since locals are loyal fans and there’s bound to be at least one professional sporting event going on at any given time of the year.

Have a Night of Opera at the California Theatre

If you’re looking for a fancy night out in San Jose, there’s nothing that says classy like the opera. 

The San Jose Opera is unique in that it maintains a resident company of principal artists and it features a lot of talented young performers. 

And besides the stellar opera performances, shows are put on in the historic California Theatre, which is one of the most beautiful performing arts venues in San Jose. 

It was built in the 1920s as a movie theater before being turned into the performing arts venue it is today. 

The California Theatre only makes San Jose opera shows that much more special, with its unique acoustics and ornate interior.

Grab Dinner in Japantown

In San Jose’s Japantown , you’ll find art galleries, souvenir shops, local boutiques, karaoke bars, and tons of delicious restaurants.  It’s also one of the last three authentic Japantowns in the US. 

And in terms of this Japantown, it’s unsurprisingly one of the best places to find good Japanese food in San Jose.

If you have a craving for sushi, regional Japanese fare, or unpretentious Japanese-American diners, spend at least one night eating out in Japantown.

Enjoy a Night of Laughs at San Jose Improv

If you want to enjoy a night of laughs, one of the best comedy spots in the city is San Jose Improv . 

You won’t find as big of names as you might at Cobb’s Comedy Club and the Punchline in San Francisco, but there are a good dose of regional comedians and some lesser-known national comedians that grace the San Jose Improv stage every night.

Tickets are relatively affordable, usually starting at around $15-$20 for the cheap seats. 

San Jose Improv also has a full dinner menu, so if you want to make it a proper night out you can reserve a spot for dinner before the show. 

Plus, dinner can be used for the two-item minimum that’s required for every show.

Eat to Your Heart’s Content at the San Jose Farmers Market

San Jose is situated in an ideal location that’s not too far from prime agricultural areas in California. 

This means that the city has a solid weekly farmers market that features several regional growers and fresh produce. 

The San Jose Farmers Market happens every Friday, and besides the regional growers selling different types of fresh produce, you’ll find hot lunches and prepackaged food options as well. 

It’s a great way to experience the San Jose community, shop local, and support local businesses and farmers. 

Plus, it’s easy to get to. The San Jose Farmers Market is conveniently located in downtown San Jose in San Pedro Square between Santa Clara Street and St. John Street. Parking is free at the market and the San Pedro Garage.

Shop ’til You Drop at Westfield Valley Fair

Unlike Santana Row, which features a lot of upscale chains, Westfield Valley Fair is where you’ll find mostly budget and mid-range international and national chains, with a handful of luxury brands thrown in. 

I used to visit Valley Fair for my back-to-school shopping when I was growing up because they had such a good selection compared to anything you could find in Santa Cruz.

In fact, it’s one of the largest malls in the US – you could literally spend hours here and feel like you’ve barely scratched the surface.

Slip Down a Water Slide at Raging Waters

It gets hot in San Jose in the summer and early fall, and a fun way to cool off is to make a visit to Raging Waters.  

Established in 1985, this 23-acre park is the largest water park in Northern California and features various slides and different types of water activities.

Don’t miss the Endless River, the Family Raft Ride, the wave pool, and the many water slides on offer for thrill-seekers like Bombs Away, Dragon’s Den, and Barracuda Blaster.

Best Free Things to do in San Jose, California

Admire the architecture at the cathedral basilica of st. joseph.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is one of the prettier fixtures in downtown San Jose.

It was built for the Roman Catholic Diocese in San Jose, and it’s the oldest non-mission parish in the state of California, having been consecrated in 1877.

Regardless of your religious beliefs, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph one of the best things to see in San Jose if you appreciate architecture and lofty interiors. 

Cathedrals are such calm places and usually have a lot of thought and beauty put into their construction.

This is the perfect place to take a break while exploring downtown San Jose.

Smell the Flowers at the Municipal Rose Garden

Touted as “America’s Best Rose Garden,” the Municipal Rose Garden is a peaceful place to take a break from San Jose sightseeing, read a book, and smell the flowers . 

This historic rose garden was founded in 1927 and exclusively features roses – a total of 189 rose varieties to be exact.  

May and the springtime as a whole is the best time to visit the gardens for the most blooms. 

However, because there are so many different types of roses, there’s almost always at least some roses blooming at any time of the year. 

And if you’re looking to explore more gardens, San Jose has a lot of options. I’d recommend adding the Japanese Friendship Garden, Heritage Rose Garden, and Overfelt Gardens to your garden itinerary.

Step Back in Time at History Park

If you’re looking to experience what life was like in the Santa Clara Valley in the early 1900s, head over to the San Jose Historic Park (located in Kelley Park). 

At the park, you’ll find 14 acres of historic (and rebuilt) buildings, landmarks, and old-fashioned ice cream parlors and trolleys. 

While walking around the park, don’t miss the Trolley Barn, the Associated Oil Service Station, the Print Shop, the Pacific Hotel, and the historic houses that give you a glimpse into life in California in the early 20th century.

Enjoy a Day Around Willow Glen

Willow Glen has become the hipster and trendy neighborhood of San Jose in recent years. 

Spend a day exploring the historic downtown, checking out the local boutiques that line Lincoln Avenue, and poking your head into independent bookstores.

Don’t leave without trying a scoop at Willow Glen Creamery or a drink at The Table .  

This is where many of the city’s annual cultural and art events happen and there’s a Saturday farmers market in the neighborhood as well.

Learn About the California Missions at Mission Santa Clara

California has a total of 21 Spanish missions that were built by the Franciscan Order in the late 1700s and early 1800s when the Spanish took over what is now present-day California.  

Mission Santa Clara was built in 1777 and was the eighth mission built in the string of 21 missions.

Located on Santa Clara University’s campus, Mission Santa Clara was also the first Mission to honor a female saint – Saint Claire of Assisi. 

Although the original mission burned down, the current mission (rebuilt in 1929) is a replica of the original one and is still a good place to learn about Spanish history in California. 

Mission Santa Clara is an operating church of the university, but visitors are welcome to visit the historical mission and spend time in the rose garden next door. 

If you have time after touring the mission, spend an hour exploring Santa Clara University, which was founded in 1851 and is the oldest university in California.

Peruse the Unique Finds at the San Jose Flea Market

Happening multiple times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the San Jose Flea Market (also known as the Berryessa Flea Market), is one of the largest outdoor markets in the United States.

At 120 acres, you could easily spend the whole day perusing the rows of hidden finds and trinkets.

From clothing to fresh produce, antiques, furniture, electronics, and more, there’s a little something for everyone at the flea market. 

There’s also usually live music in the form of mariachi bands, a mini Ferris wheel, arcade, and various local food and drink vendors to keep you happy and full throughout the day. 

Especially with the good weather that San Jose usually enjoys, this is one of the best things to do in San Jose on a sunny day. 

Since the flea market is only an 11-minute drive from the airport, it’s also one of the best things to do near San Jose airport before you hop on a flight if you’re looking for unique souvenirs to take home.

Go on an Art Crawl at SoFA District First Fridays

If you happen to be in San Jose on the first Friday of the month, you won’t want to miss South First Fridays in the SoFA District of San Jose. 

This monthly self-guided art walk consists of an evening enjoying the best art galleries in the neighborhood.  

It’s an ideal way to support local creatives and businesses each month and to enjoy a cultured evening full of community, art, and performances. 

And even if your trip doesn’t line up with being in San Jose on the first Friday of the month, the SoFA district is a fun spot to explore for an afternoon or evening. 

Around the neighborhood, you’ll not only find art galleries, but trendy restaurants, museums, and a decent nightlife scene as well.

It’s one of the best things to do around San Jose if you’re looking to get an art fix, grab a drink, and immerse yourself in San Jose culture.

Walk Along the Los Gatos Creek Trail or the Guadalupe River Trail

Spanning over 11 miles, the Los Gatos Creek Trail is an urban path for walkers, joggers, and cyclists looking to stretch their legs and enjoy a different side to Santa Clara County.

If you want to just focus on the San Jose section of the trail, you can start from Dupont Street (Off San Carlos Street) and start walking south or from Meridian Avenue.

The full trail goes all the way down to Los Gatos and beyond, passing through scenic spots like Los Gatos Creek County Park and the Lexington Reservoir along the way. 

Another urban trail that is worth checking out is the Guadalupe River Trail . This 12-mile trail heads north instead of south and starts just south of where the Los Gatos Creek meets the Guadalupe River. 

Even if you just do only parts of either of these trails, it’s a nice way to spend a sunny afternoon, maybe with an iced coffee in hand.

Visit Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library

Part of the San Jose State University campus and San Jose’s main public library, if you love cool architecture and being surrounded by books, a visit to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library is a must.

Built in 2003, this eight-story library is fun just to walk around with its unique interior and endless supply of books. There are a number of exhibits and pieces of art throughout the library as well.

One of the best ways to take the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in fully is to hop on a docent-led tour. They have a Thursday drop-in tour at 11:30 am and an art and library history tour that can be scheduled online.

People Watch at Plaza de Cesar Chavez

One of the best places to people watch or simply relax between all of the sightseeing is Plaza de Cesar Chavez . 

This two-acre plaza and park is a popular spot for San Jose events throughout the year and a main hangout spot and thoroughfair in downtown San Jose. 

With the Plaze de Cesar Chavez’s history going all the way back to 1797, it’s also the oldest public space in Northern California.  

Local Things to do in San Jose

Catch a flick at the west wind capitol drive-in.

Drive-ins have started making a comeback since 2020 and  San Jose has one of the best drive-in options in the Bay Area. 

The West Wind Capitol Drive-In is actually a chain that has survived the test of time.

The franchise can be found around the Western US, including four locations in California. 

West Wind Drive-In in San Jose tends to feature a mix of recently released movies and popular classics in a variety of genres. 

And as a bonus, it’s an inexpensive night out at only $8.25 for general admission and $1.75 for kids under 12.

On Tuesdays, they do Family Fun Night where general admission drops down to $5.50 for general admission. 

This is one of the best things to do in San Jose at night if you don’t want to hit the bars and want to go to a good ol’ retro drive-in.

Experience a Speakeasy at Haberdasher

There are various places to go in San Jose to experience the city’s nightlife, but one of the best bars in the city if you’re looking for a 1920s speakeasy theme is Haberdasher . 

As soon as you walk into the bar, you’ll find yourself stepping back in time to the 1920s with plush red sofas and bartenders in themed uniforms. 

And it’s not just the atmosphere that makes this bar such a special place, the cocktails are delicious and some of the best in the city. 

You can either order a drink from the menu or ask the bartender to make their own concoction based on the flavors you want and the liquor base you prefer. 

If you only have time to go to one bar in San Jose, this one should be it.

Test Your Escape Skills at OMESCAPE San Jose

Escape rooms have popped up in most major cities around the world in recent years, but San Jose’s OMESCAPE is one of the best ones you’ll come across in California. 

In fact, it’s been voted the #1 escape room in the Bay Area.

OMESCAPE is actually a Bay Area chain, with a total of three locations, including two others in Richmond and Sunnyvale. 

At their San Jose location, they offer five themed experiences that go further than your average escape room.

Although San Jose has its fair share of actual golf courses, if you’re looking for something a little more colorful and family-friendly doing some rounds of mini golf at Emerald Hills Golfland is a fun afternoon or evening activity. 

At Golfland, you’ll find two mini golf courses, an arcade, a snack bar, and even a few water slides if you bring your bathing suit.

Play Some Games at Miniboss

If you’re looking for something a little more adult but still in the vein of a game night, you won’t want to miss Miniboss – San Jose’s best barcade option.

At Miniboss you can grab a pint or cocktail while you play Killer Queen, pinball, or a number of other vintage arade games.

I absolutely love barcades and Miniboss has a lot to offer with its 26 arcade games, 10 different pinball machines, and a full bar and restaurants.

What used to be known as the HP Pavillion when I was growing up in the 90s, has since become the SAP Center – aka the place to go for large events, such as concerts or San Jose Sharks games.

I’ve gone to a variety of concerts here (including seeing John Mayer in his prime right after his Continuum album came out!), as well as Disney on Ice when I was a kid and it’s always been such a fun experience. 

If there’s anything happening at the SAP Center when you’re in town, you should definitely experience this huge venue for yourself. It’s conveniently located right outside of downtown San Jose, next to Diridon Station.

Gear Up and Declare War at Santa Clara Paintball

If you’re looking for fun things to do in San Jose with friends, look no further than Santa Clara Paintball . Running since 2003, this is the best place to challenge your friends to a paintball war in San Jose, whether you’re an experienced paintballer or a newbie. 

Santa Clara Paintball features 12 playing fields with plenty of obstacles to hide behind, plus a laser tag course for anyone who wants the no-contact version of paintball.

If you’re doing paintball, just make sure to cover yourself in thick clothing because those paintball welts can hurt!

Try Not to Get a Gutter Ball at one of San Jose’s Many Bowling Alleys

With four bowling alleys within San Jose city limits and plenty more outside of it, there are a lot of options for hitting the lanes and putting on some of those snazzy bowling shoes.

These are three bowling alleys you’ll find in the city: 

• 4th Street Bowl – The most conveniently located bowling alley near downtown, 4th Street Bowl has 32 lanes, a lounge with a full bar, pool tables, karaoke, and a coffee shop. This one definitely has a more local feel. 
• Bowlero San Jose – The largest of the bowling alleys in San Jose, Bowlero is a national chain and has 50 lanes where you can do blacklight bowling, a full bar and restaurant, and arcade. And even though it’s a chain, Bowlero feels more like a boutique place to bowl. 
• Round 1 Eastridge – Another chain bowling spot (but one that’s not as fancy as Bowlero), Round 1 is located in the Eastridge Mall and offers bowling, an arcade, pool, darts, ping pong, and a bar and restaurant.

Spend the Day Golfing

One of the benefits of having such a spread out area and so much space (at least compared to other parts of the Bay Area) is that there are a number of quality golf courses in San Jose.

If you’re looking for a day out on the green, I’d recommend checking out Cinnabar Hills Golf Club , Los Lagos Golf Course , Rancho Del Pueblo Golf Course , San Jose Municipal Golf Course , or Santa Teresa Golf Club .

Lace Up and Hit the Ice at Solar4America Ice Rink

California isn’t exactly known for its cold weather activities, but in San Jose you can go ice skating year round at the Solar4America Ice Rink .

This is multi-use rink that is used by everyone from the San Jose Sharks to new skaters taking group classes. For those who are looking to drop in to experience the rink for themselves, they also offer public skate sessions.

It’s best to check their website for current schedules since it’s constantly changing these days, but it’s a fun way to spend an afternoon while trying not to fall on your butt.  

Also, don’t miss getting some poutine from Stanley’s before you leave!

See a Show at City Lights Theater Company

Looking for a unique night out in San Jose? The City Lights Theater Company is a small non-profit theater that produces six creative shows per year that are usually written by local writers.  

Many of their productions focus on relevant modern-day topics or put a spin on a classic storyline. Recent productions have included stories about internet trolls, classist entitlement, and Vietnamese refugees.

San Jose has a few unique museums and one of the most interesting ones in the city is the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum . 

If you’ve ever been interested in life in ancient Egypt, this is a good introduction to all things Egyptian. 

The museum is home to the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in the Western US and includes exhibits that span from the predynastic period to the early Islamic era in Egypt. 

Exhibits go into depth about everything from Egyptian history to the beginnings of mummification and home life in ancient Egypt.

And don’t be fooled by how small it looks when you walk in. 

As you go through the exhibits, you’ll realize just how much there is to read and see. 

It could easily take a whole afternoon to go through the museum. 

If you only have time for one museum in San Jose, this is the one I would recommend visiting.

San Jose Museum of Art

If you want to get cultured during a day in San Jose, the San Jose Museum of Art is the ideal place to go look at classic and modern artwork from local, regional, and international artists.

The main draw to this museum is its large permanent collection of West Coast artists from the 20th and 21st centuries. 

This is San Jose’s main art museum, but it’s relatively small and manageable enough to walk through all of the exhibits within an hour or two.

San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art

One of the few free museums in San Jose, the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art is where you’ll find unique local and regional artists on display in a minimalist space. 

This art museum is on the smaller side with only three galleries, but the variety of thought-provoking pieces means it’s well worth stopping in for 30 minutes to an hour.  

And all of their exhibits are constantly rotating so you’ll always find something new to appreciate with each visit.

San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles

It may not have the most interesting name, but the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles is a quirky museum that houses artwork made from, you guessed it, quilts and textiles. 

Founded in 1977, the museum features a number of rotating exhibits and hosts various workshops, talks, and events throughout the year. If you’re into different patterns and fabrics at all, make this a stop on your San Jose itinerary.

Japanese American Museum of San Jose

In the middle of Japantown, you’ll find the Japanese American Museum of San Jose .

At the museum, you can learn more about Japanese culture through art, historical artifacts, photographs, and a discussion about what it means to identify as Japanese-American in this country.

Bring your kids to the children’s discovery museum.

If you’re wondering what to do in San Jose if you’re traveling with kids, the Children’s Discovery Museum is another highly ranked attraction in the city and one of the best things to do in downtown San Jose.

It’s ranked as one of the top 10 children’s museums in the US and has various interactive science exhibits geared towards the younger ones.

Enjoy a Sunny Afternoon at Happy Hollow Park and Zoo

A popular 16-acre zoo and amusement park, Happy Hollow is one of the best San Jose tourist attractions to visit if you’re traveling to the city with kids under the age of eight.

Operating since 1961, the park features kids’ rides, puppet shows, animal exhibits, a petting zoo, and educational programs that put an emphasis on conservation and sustainability.

Have a Day on the Farm at Emma Prusch Farm Park

If you’re looking for a full day of animals and fun for the whole family, Emma Prusch Farm Park is another great option for a San Jose activity with kids. 

This 47-acre park was once a working dairy farm in the San Jose area. 

Today, it offers a glimpse into San Jose’s agricultural past.  

At the park, you’ll find fruit orchards, community gardens, small animal areas, a plant science center, butterfly gardens, and plenty of open spaces for picnics. 

One of the best ways to experience the park is by visiting on the first Saturday of the month when they have their farmers market event that features food from the gardens and live music.

Get Nerdy at the Tech Interactive

If you want to learn about Tech, there’s really no better place to do that than the Capital of Silicon Valley. 

One of the more popular San Jose attractions, the Tech Interactive is located in downtown San Jose and features hands-on science and technology exhibits.  

The museum is more geared for children than it is for adults and there tends to be a lot of school field trips that take place here. 

Because of this, it’s the perfect interactive museum to visit if you have school-age kids in tow. 

There’s also an IMAX theater inside that features educational films about science, animals, and the Earth. 

Best Outdoor Things to do in San Jose

Alum rock park.

Alum Rock Park is one of the best historic parks and outdoor places to visit near San Jose. 

It has roots that go back to 1777 when it was a pueblo.

And it’s California’s oldest municipal park, having been established in 1872. 

Besides its layered history, Alum Rock Park is an ideal place to have a day in nature that’s not too far from the city. 

The park features 720 acres of hiking trails, picnic areas, bike paths, as well as a few scenic views. 

Don’t miss walking the South Rim Trail (4.3 miles) or the lookouts from Eagle Rock, Inspiration Point, or Canyon View.

Almaden Quicksilver County Park

An even better place to go for a hike near San Jose is Almaden Quicksilver County Park . 

The park covers over 4,000 acres and includes the historic remnants of 135 years of mining, including various former mercury mines.  

At the park, you’ll find over 35 miles of hiking trails, 30 miles of equestrian trails, and 16 miles of bike trails with scenery that varies from open meadows to oak woodland.  

If you’re looking to hike for a few hours, a good trail to start with is the Quicksilver Trail (5 miles).

Otherwise, the Senador-Guadalupe and Guadalupe-Mine Hill Loops are short and easy trails to tackle. 

If you’re able to visit the park during the spring, do it.

This is where you’ll find some of the most impressive wildflower displays in the San Jose area.

Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve

If you’re more interested in wide-open spaces and valley views than long hikes, the Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve is a good spot to visit near San Jose. 

Located in the Eastern foothills of Santa Clara County, just above Alum Rock Park, Sierra Vista is 1,611 acres of panoramic views, peaceful walks, and grassland. 

It’s also home to various protected wildlife species and only a 25-minute drive from downtown San Jose. 

A good hike to start with that provides some of the best views in the park is the two-mile Aquila Loop Trail.

Best Things to do Near San Jose, California

Wine tasting around the santa cruz mountains.

One of the best things to do in the South Bay, and just outside of San Jose, is wine tasting.

I don’t know why I never realized how many great wineries there are just outside the city, but there are a ton in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

With the sometimes pretentiousness of Napa Valley, the Santa Cruz Mountains is the perfect alternative to trying some tasty local wines with the backdrop of rolling hills and forested vistas.

When I did my own tour, I was impressed at how beautiful some of these wineries are.

They convinced me just how gorgeous the South Bay can be. 

If you want to do your own self-guided winery tour around the Santa Cruz Mountains, a few that shouldn’t be missed include Regale, Loma Prieta, and Picchetti.

Lick Observatory

About a one-hour drive east of San Jose, you’ll find the Lick Observatory perched atop Mount Hamilton. 

The observatory was built in 1888 and is an active research facility owned and operated by the University of California. 

If you’re into astronomy or you just want a stunning view of the Santa Clara Valley, this is a great option for a day trip from San Jose. 

At the observatory, you can view exhibits, hear talks about the history of the observatory and James Lick, take a look at the Great Lick Refractor in the 36-inch telescope dome, and view the 120-inch Reflector in the Shane Dome. 

During the summer, they usually have a concert and lecture series in the evenings by renowned scientists – it’s one of the best ways to experience the observatory to its fullest. 

Just note that the road up to the observatory is winding and remote so drive safely and fill up on gas ahead of time.

Explore Downtown Los Gatos

Ranked the 33rd wealthiest city in the US, Los Gatos is an upscale hideaway and one of the best day trips from San Jose. 

Not everyone can afford to live there, but it has a beautiful little downtown area that’s fun to visit for an afternoon if you’re looking for a different pace from San Jose.

Incorporated as a town in 1887, it’s also one of Santa Clara County’s oldest communities.

Spend the afternoon walking along N Santa Cruz Avenue, poking your head into the boutiques and local shops that line the main downtown thoroughfare. 

You really can’t go wrong with the food in downtown Los Gatos, but I’d recommend lunch from Campo di Bocce , Los Gatos Cafe Uptown , or Oak & Rye . 

Afterward, you can go for a tasting at one of the many Los Gatos wine bars to try the delicious wine varieties found in the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains. 

A couple favorites include Rootstock Wine Bar or Cin-Cin Wine Bar .

If you have more than just an afternoon, there are plenty of things to see just outside of the downtown area as well. 

Vasona Lake County Park , Castle Rock State Park , or wine tasting around the vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains are just a few options.

Get Your Thrills at California’s Great America

If rollercoasters are your thing, then California’s Great America is a good day trip to include if you have more than one day in San Jose.

Only a 15-20 minute drive from downtown San Jose, t his 100-acre amusement park , has eight rollercoasters in addition to its many other thrill rides.

It’s something to experience at least once if you’re in the area and perfect to visit if you’re traveling with older kids.

If you’re looking for a decent hotel, expect to shell out at least $150 – $250 a night. If you have more of a cushy budget, I would highly recommend staying at one of the classy hotels on Santana Row.

Hotel Valencia Santana Row

I had the chance to stay here once on a trip to San Jose and could not recommend it enough.

Hotel Valencia not only offers great customer service, but it’s also from one of my Mediterranean daydreams – with a rooftop and balcony rooms that feature grand views looking out over Santana Row and the valley.

Pavilion Inn 

An affordable option for those who don’t want to go completely budget.

Pavilion Inn is located a little bit outside the city center (about an eight-minute drive), but offers a clean, quiet, and comfortable stay with a quality continental breakfast (including waffles!).

The Flamingo Motel 

If you’re looking for an inexpensive stay right in the heart of downtown, this motel is right next to the SAP Center (formerly the HP Pavilion) and offers free parking.

The motel is 100% nonsmoking and features basic amenities, as well as kitchens in some rooms.

Best Time to Visit San Jose

Like most of California, San Jose has a temperate climate that stays within a fairly comfortable range year round.

It’s generally a few degrees warmer than San Francisco on any given day and the city enjoys hot summers and winters that rarely get below freezing. 

My favorite seasons for nice weather and fewer crowds are spring and fall. Summer, especially July and August, can be very busy so you might want to avoid those months if you don’t want to deal with crowds.

San Jose is also known for its temperate and Mediterranean-like climate.

In general, 1-3 days is usually a good timeframe for exploring San Jose.

San Jose is 48 miles from San Francisco.  It usually takes around an hour to drive from San Francisco to San Jose. 

Or you can take the Caltrain from San Francisco to Diridon Station in San Jose.  The journey on Caltrain is around an hour and a half.

I know I was surprised too! It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Bay Area, I feel like San Jose is one of those underrated destinations 🙂

San Jose is a tourist hot spot. There are many things to do in San Jose, from heritage attractions to natural scenery and hiking trails. It is also known for its cutting-edge tech movement and educational opportunities. It is home to San Jose State University, Santa Clara University, and even Silicon Valley, the home of the tech industry.

Visiting San Jose is definitely one of those places to visit if you are road tripping through this part of the United States. 1. Shop on Santana Row

San Jose’s Silicon Valley is pretty darn famous. It’s known for the largest collection of tech companies and is always involved in the latest and greatest projects. But, if you want to pick up a new gadget as a souvenir, shopping on Santana Row is one of the best things to do in San Jose.

Santana Row is where you can pick the fruits of Silicon Valley labor. It is a commercial district, booming with life and flooded with restaurants, shops, and plazas. Shopping lovers and tech enthusiasts alike will enjoy strolling the streets.

There is enough to see (and buy) on Santana Row to keep you occupied for at least half a day. However, if you include a trip to the Santana Row cinema, allow a full day to appreciate the district.

2. San Jose Improv

Fancy a laugh? San Jose Improv has been a reliable venue for a giggle since it opened in 2002. The venue hosts celebrity comedians and newcomers, acting as a ladder for up-and-coming west coast artists and a venue for in-demand performers.

The NYC-born chain opened in the 60s and branched out to San Jose at the turn of the century. Catching a comedy show is a fun way to spend an evening. We recommend checking the schedule for events that coincide with your visit to San Jose.

The San Jose Improv theater is lavishly decorated, with comfortable seats and every seat in the house offers good views of the stage. Don’t worry too much about last-minute tickets having inadequate seating – after all, sitting further back just means you are less likely to get called upon when you don’t want to be.

3. Institute of Contemporary Art

If you are an art lover then you will want to spend some time in Downtown San Jose at one of the many art galleries. You can be transported from San Jose’s streets to a beautiful, hilly landscape in less than half an hour. Almaden Quicksilver County Park is great for hiking to scenic viewpoints and has lots of mining history. You can incorporate visiting old mining infrastructure into your walks. The park is best for those who want hills and history.

Almaden Quicksilver County Park has nearly forty miles of hiking trails and thirty miles of bridleways. You can explore the country park on foot or organize a trail ride with local stables. Either way, the park is easily a full-day activity. You should allow at least a morning to appreciate the flora and relaxing, natural environment.

6. Lexington Reservoir County Park

Speaking of spaces of natural beauty, Lexington Reservoir County Park is another excellent place to visit just outside the San Jose center.

The 950-acre park gets its namesake from the massive artificial lake in its center. While swimming is prohibited, you can enjoy a walk around the reservoir – stopping at picnic areas and fishing spots. The reservoir itself is 338 acres and fully stocked with trout and black bass, amongst other fish.

This county park is a great place to spend a day by the water. Fishing lovers and families will particularly appreciate the lake access. It is also well combined with a visit to Testarossa Winery, located just ten minutes up the road.

7. Tech Interactive

8. Cathedral Basilica of St Joseph

Guadalupe has 2.6 miles of hiking and biking trails, which is perfect for those wanting a stretch of their legs. It is common to see morning joggers or professionals taking lunch breaks in the park. But, as a tourist, it is nice to join them.

This park is a great place to experience the urban community and appreciate inner city greenspace. Thanks to its downtown location, it is easily added to even the most packed itineraries.

10. Happy Hollow Park and Zoo

Happy Hollow Park and Zoo wears many belts. The park is an amusement park, petting zoo, and exotic zoo all in one.

Happy Hollow Park is located in Kelley Park, a 250-acre green space near the city center. While the zoo is relatively small, it houses over 150 animals – many of whom are rescued or endangered members of a conservation breeding program.

19. SAP Center

The reservoir is recognizable by many distinctive features, including Goose Island (a tiny natural island on the lake) and the Vasona Lake Dam. While Vasona Lake Country Park is much smaller than Lexington Country Park, it is the best choice if you want a short lakeside experience. The construction process took a grand total of 38 years. Even for a 160-room mansion, you’d be right to think that this timescale was on the excessively long side. 22. San Jose Flea Market

San Jose Flea Market is as much a cultural spot as it is a market. Yes, you’ll find all the stalls with a diverse range of goods to buy. But you’ll also find free dance lessons, trivia events, and a beer garden.

The city’s flea market has been in full swing since it opened its doors in the 1960s. You’ll find over 800 sellers attending every weekend. However, there are also designated weekday market days, so don’t fret if you are visiting San Jose during the week.

San Jose Flea Market has everything – even live music. The market has a stage that local performers can choose to perform to shoppers on, and, more often than not, this stage attracts a little gathering. Visiting the market is a fun thing to do in San Jose, whether you want to shop or just enjoy the atmosphere.

23. San Pedro Square Market

San Pedro Square market has a slightly different vibe. This market specializes in food and looks like an informal food court.

You could be sampling a banh mi from On A Roll, a craft beer from Market Beer Co., or tucking into hand-rolled sushi at Hyland House of Sushi. San Pedro Square Market has the best multi-cultural cuisine in all of San Jose, which is saying something, as San Jose has a lot of delicious food.

24. Los Gatos Creek Trail

Do you love a fitness challenge? You should consider walking Los Gatos Creek Trail. The 11.2-mile trail starts in Downtown San Jose and ends just past Lexington Reservoir. You’ll pass Los Gatos County Park and Vasona Lake County Park – combining visiting multiple parks in one day.

After hiking in remote, natural areas, it is nice to mix things up and take a suburban walk. The trailhead is also remarkably easy to access, which is helpful if you are short on time or not hiring a car in San Jose.

As you may have guessed, Los Gatos Creek Trail follows Los Gatos Creek, a small river running south of San Jose. The trail itself is tarmacked and bike-friendly, so you can always cycle it if you want to complete the route quicker. Otherwise, allow up to five hours to complete Los Gatos Creek Trail on foot.

25. Children’s Discovery Museum

If you are traveling with young companions, the Children’s Discovery Museum is a fantastic, age-appropriate thing to do in San Jose.

The Children’s Discovery Museum aims to provide just that, with Montessori-style learning opportunities and specialized educational areas. How to Get to San Jose

The easiest way to get to San Jose is to fly. San Jose Airport is just 3 miles from Downtown San Jose, so it is quick and convenient to transfer from the airport to the city center.

Of course, if you are road tripping the west coast or another popular American road trip route, you may wish to drive to San Jose. Driving to San Jose is a good option if you want to stop at destinations en route, as the city is surrounded by attractions and natural scenery. Make sure that your accommodation offers parking; otherwise, parking can be problematic in the city.

Getting Around

San Jose is extremely well-connected by the VTA Light Rail and Bus system. While there isn’t a subway system, you don’t notice it and most definitely aren’t inconvenienced without one. The light rail or bus is the best option for a low-cost way to get around San Jose.

If you stay centrally, you’ll be able to explore many popular attractions on foot. In Downtown San Jose, there are tourist attractions practically on your hotel’s doorstep.

Driving is good for day trips and reaching attractions on the city outskirts. Avoid driving in the city center though, as traffic is awful and sometimes walking can be quicker than driving.

Best Time to Visit

In short, spring or fall are the best times to visit San Jose. Summer is warm but far too busy, and in winter, you miss out on enjoying the outdoor activities. Spring and fall are the best of both worlds – not too busy but still well-suited to being outdoors.

To narrow it down further, May and October are the shoulder seasons and cheapest months to visit San Jose. Overall, May is a little warmer, so we recommend visiting then if you can.

San Jose is full of incredible things to do and see. The city is one of the best destinations in Northern California. It is an excellent alternative to the well-trodden streets of San Francisco.

Downtown San Jose may be the central business district of the city and one of the biggest technological hubs in Silicon Valley, but that doesn’t mean it’s all work and no play there. The district has been through an era of redevelopment spanning several decades and has evolved as a modern environment with first-class social and cultural activities.

Take an insightful art walk or hike the riverside trail, visit tech and history museums before sampling Downtown San Jose’s sophisticated night spots or restaurants. Believe it, you’ll be spoilt for choice, and there won’t be enough hours in the day to cram it all in.

While Downtown San Jose was founded back in the late 18th century, its kept up with the times and is one US city urban nucleus where getting a good internet connection is not a problem. In fact, almost everywhere you go in the district, there’s free WIFI which is ideal for keeping up to date on the latest events or for downloading an interactive map. 1. San Jose Brew Bike

Combine sightseeing in Downtown San Jose with a fun ride on a Brew Bike. Join the tour on DT’s Park Avenue and although there’s no steering involved, that’s down to the driver-guide, be ready to pedal.

Cycle around Downtown San Jose catching all the district’s major sites and stop off at three or four selected pubs for refreshment along the way.

The Brew Bikes carry up to fifteen people so be prepared for a party on wheels. Tours last between two to three hours and cater for both groups and individuals so are a great way of meeting people if you’re traveling alone.

2. Tech Museum of Innovation

The Tech Museum of Innovation in the Plaza de César Chávez in Downtown San Jose is a museum which is just as much about the future of science and technology as it is about the past.

The museum has innumerable exhibits distributed over three floors exploring such diverse scientific subjects as the effects of technology on the world, synthetic biology and augmented reality.

The Tech also aims to spark creativity in the minds of visitors by inviting them to build their own robot and promotes internet safety by encouraging participation in the interactive cyber sleuth exhibit.

3. San Pedro Square Market

The San Pedro Square Market on San Pedro Street in Downtown San Jose is a hive of activity seven days a week from early in the morning until late at night.

While it’s labeled as a market, think more food hall with live music than stalls with fresh produce. With almost twenty food outlets offering cuisine ranging from pizza to Nepali steamed dumplings and four bars serving everything from beer to Australian coffee, the choice is almost limitless.

The market has two stages and puts on live music performances every night as well as outdoor events when the weather permits.

4. SAP Center

The SAP Center on West Santa Clara Street in Downtown San Jose is a major sporting and concert venue which features NHL ice hockey games and top artists like Fleetwood Mac and Elton John.

The twenty-thousand seater arena is the home base of the San Jose ice hockey team, the San Jose Sharks and has private lounges and VIP suites as well as normal stadium seating.

There are food and beverage concessions on every level selling a variety of products from Panda Express serving Chinese spring rolls and Beijing beef to Iguana’s serving nachos and burritos.

5. Black Power Olympic Statue

Operating in Downtown San Jose on South 1st Street since 1956, Original Joe’s serves up their Italian-American meals in style. Take a seat in one of the booths and be formally attended by a tuxedo-wearing waiter.

Go hungry because the portions are gigantic. Think thirty-ounce Porterhouse or twenty-six-ounce Rib steak grilled on Mesquite charcoal with a side of house ravioli. Original Joe’s also serves up great traditional Italian pasta dishes or house specials of Chicken Parmigiana and Veal Scallopini.

8. Plaza de César Chávez

The Plaza de César Chávez in Downtown San Jose is one of the districts oldest areas. Created along with the founding of San Jose in the late 18th century, the two-acre plaza and park is the ideal spot for taking a relaxing outdoor breather.

The plaza has broad paved pathways for walking, immense lawned areas lined with palm trees and several stunning fountains. There is an open-air theater in the plaza where frequent festivals, music performances, and dramatic acts are held.

Considered the birthplace of modern technology, San Jose is one of the most advanced tech hubs not only in California, but the whole world. People from across the globe rush to the city for job opportunities and top-notch educational institutions—it just so happens that San Jose is also one of the most educated cities in the Golden State . But tech isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and it might have you wondering “What else is there to do?” The answer is pretty simple. You’ll actually never get bored of this city. The number of fun things to do in San Jose will keep you busy all day, every day.  

Cool Stuff To Do in San Jose During the Day

1. Participate in Hands-on Activities at The Tech Interactive

You’ll never know how innovative you can be until you visit one of the most creative places in California, The Tech Interactive . The family-friendly science and technology center offers hands-on activities, experimental labs, and design challenges that encourage people to get creative and curious. The excitement doesn’t stop there at this San Jose attraction. The Tech Interactive’s IMAX Dome Theater has the world’s first laser projector for a dome theater, where you’ll have a unique movie experience. In a nutshell, The Tech Interactive provides a glimpse into how things are run in Silicon Valley.

2. Learn How the Pharaohs Lived at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum 

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum houses the largest collection of authentic ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world. Founded by the Rosicrucian Order at the peak of the Egyptomania era in 1928, the museum consists of a planetarium, research library, as well as more than 4,000 artifacts. Inside the Egyptian-inspired building are the mummified bodies of four humans, cats, sharks, and baboons. If you’ve always been fascinated with ancient Egyptian culture, a trip to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum will be the best thing you do in San Jose .

3. Relax at Alum Rock Park

Did you know that California’s first municipal park is located in San Jose? Alum Rock Park was initially a public space when San Jose was established in 1777, but started serving as a park in 1872. As the ideal family attraction for those who love being in the great outdoors, this park boasts 13 miles of hiking and biking trails, plenty of picnic spots, and spacious playgrounds for kids—you’ll even find a small museum within its premises. Spend a relaxing day with your family and enjoy the scenic views of Silicon Valley. 

4. Spend the Day at Kelley Park

Kelley Park is another must-visit spot with the family. The 156-acre natural beauty is more than just a regular park. Happy Hollow Park and Zoo , Japanese Friendship Garden, San Jose History Park, Viet Museum, and Portuguese Historical Museum are all found here. You’ll also notice gorgeous lakes and hiking trails at Kelley Park. Watch your kids have the time of their lives petting the animals and playing around as you stroll the trails and check out the museums.

5. Experience the San Jose Vibe at the Flea Market

The only way to actually experience the San Jose vibe is by visiting the Flea Market . Organic fruits and vegetables, barbershops, electronic supplies, and bookshops are at your disposal at one of the best places to visit in San Jose —so are restaurants for when you’re done shopping. If you’re a more on-the-go eater, grab a corn dog or barbecue on your wait. There’s basically nothing that you won’t find at the San Jose Flea Market. And the best part is the kids can tag along and enjoy riding the carousel and Ferris wheel.

6. Tour the Creepy Winchester Mystery House

San Jose has a creepy side thanks to the Winchester Mystery House . The story behind this spooky mansion is Sarah Winchester, the widow of a firearms magnate, moved from Connecticut to a small eight-room house in San Jose in 1884. Over the next 38 years, Sarah continued adding to the house until it had 160 rooms. When touring the Winchester Mystery House , you’ll find doors that open to walls, indoor balconies, and stairs that go nowhere. If you're looking for exciting things to do in San Jose at night, you know where to go.

7. Hike the Sierra Road Loop

Who’s all excited about night hikes? You better be, because the Sierra Road Loop’s magnificent views can’t be found anywhere else. To be clear, we’re not saying hiking the trail during the day isn’t as enjoyable; we’re just saying that the San Jose night sky is worth viewing from this very spot. The moderate loop is a 4.6-mile hike that takes about two hours to finish. If you’re a beginner, arrive in the afternoon hours so you manage to arrive during sunset and enjoy stargazing . 

8. Catch a Flick at West Wind Capitol Drive-In

The most traffic you’ll see in San Jose is at West Wind Capitol Drive-In during midnight screenings. Family-owned and operated, the open-air movie theater is the go-to for people who love watching horrors, comedies, and romance flicks under the NorCal night sky. There are several snack bars at the drive-in theater , but feel free to bring your own. Watching your favorite movies the good, old-fashioned way has never been better—shh, the show’s about to begin.  

9. Party at The Ritz

San Jose knows how to throw a good party. The city’s famous club The Ritz is every couple’s favorite spot to go on Friday nights. With a huge dance floor and awesome atmosphere, you’ll have an unforgettable night in Downtown San Jose. Local and international musicians and DJs keep everybody dancin’ all night. And on select nights, you can even drop by for a movie screening followed by a party. As a top spot for unique dates , The Ritz gets pretty crowded, so make sure you arrive early. And if you want to have dinner and party, reserve your seats ahead of time.

Top Things to Do in San Jose, Costa Rica

S et in the heart of the Central Valley of Costa Rica, San Jose (the capital city of Costa Rica) boasts rich culture and history that easily blend with modern architecture, and despite what you may have heard (or read), there are plenty of fun things to do and places to go here that’d genuinely make your stay memorable.

To make it easy for you to plan your vacation, I’ve researched some of the top things to do in San Jose Costa Rica so you don’t have to. Make arrangements for a free walking tour or a paid San Jose city tour and check out all of them!

Please do remember that the San Jose International Airport is about 30 minutes from downtown San Jose, where most of these activities are located. If you want to truly explore San Jose, the best thing to do is to spend a day or two in the city to try all of the great San Jose restaurants and explore the city more in-depth. If you choose to stay longer, there are a ton of great day trips from San Jose that you can explore too. (My favorites are the Poas Volcano, La Paz Waterfall Gardens , and the Espiritu Santo coffee plantation .)

Once you are finished visiting San Jose, you may want to look into another Latin American capital city . One that’s on my bucket list is Havana, Cuba as I’ve heard there are lots of things to do in Havana .

National Stadium

The National Stadium is not only a sight to behold; it’s also one of the best places to catch some of the most mind-blowing sporting concerts and events Costa Rica offers. Located west of La Sabana park, the newly built master arena is the most modern and one of the largest in Central America, accommodating more than thirty-five thousand sports fans in its three decks of seating.

Here, you can get tickets for fabulous soccer matches or cool concerts from famous artists like Shakira, Coldplay, or Lady Gaga. And don’t worry if you can’t find a seat next to the field or stage; each end of the arena has enormous TV screens where you can see a close-up of every action!

You can drive here yourself or use public transportation. However, bringing a car may not be the best way to get here, especially on match or concert days, as there isn’t enough parking. To avoid the hassle, just hop into a taxi or catch one of the trains that run to Sabana station.

La Sabana Park

Another awesome place to spend your time during your stay in San Jose would be the La Sabana Metropolitan Park. If you’ve been to New York’s Central Park, you’ll definitely love being here, as the vibe is pretty much the same – there’s a vibrant atmosphere and verdant, well-maintained greenery where you can just relax and soak in the gorgeousness of the giant skyscrapers surrounding the area.

On the days when there are no matches at the stadium, you can come here and feed the geese by the pond, indulge in various outdoor activities including jogging, biking, rollerblading, tennis, and picnicking, or just hang out with loved ones on one of the benches. Although this park can be a little crowded during the weekends, it’s a great place to mingle with the locals or simply wind down and reconnect with nature in the bustling city center.

Jade Museum

If you’re a history buff, the Jade Museum is a must-see. Located west of Plaza de la Democracia on the Avenida Central, just down the road from the iconic National Museum, this historic building houses a wide and diverse collection of artifacts showcasing rich Costa Rican history.

Here, you will find Pre-Columbian jade, adzes, tables, wood, ceramics, decorative pieces, and other artifacts dating from 500 B.C – 800 B.C carefully displayed in a renovated space. Expect to spend up to two hours touring all five floors of displays. There’s a café and restaurant on site where you can grab a drink or some munchie to keep those energy levels up as you explore the exhibits.

Got children? You’ll be happy to know that there are giant puzzles, excavation role-play, and other exciting kid-friendly activities to keep the little ones entertained.

Pre-Columbian Gold Museum

The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum is situated under the Plaza de la Cultura and houses one of the largest and most diverse collections of gold items in Latin America, making it an important destination for history and art lovers.

A guided tour of this museum will give you a chance to explore over 1,600 Pre-Columbian gold artifacts including jewelry, religious icons, handmade ceramics, and the country’s very first coin; it’s a great way to learn the history of the precious metal.

If you’ve got some time left, check out the two other currency-related museums located in Plaza de la Cultura – the Casa de Moneda and the National Coin Museum. The Casa de Moneda will showcase the minting history and the National Coin Museum will have displays dating back to 1236, all of which will get you learning more about the history of Costa Rican currency.

National Museum of Costa Rica

In the heart of downtown San Jose at Bellavista Fortress is another incredible art gallery, the National Museum, that offers impressive displays of indigenous and Pre-Columbian artwork, archaeological and geological items, and religious artifacts linked to the Ticos’ colorful history.

What was once a military barracks is now a center for studying, classifying, and protecting natural and artistic products, allowing visitors to explore ancient cultures dating thousands of years back.

While the fantastic collection of pre-Columbian artifacts including medallions, ornate jewelry, and gold statues will truly transport you back in time, do not miss the beautiful glass atrium butterfly garden at the entrance that showcases the country’s natural beauty or the building itself that still has bullet holes from the Civil War of 1948.

National Theatre (Teatro Nacional)

If you’re a fan of performing arts, then you definitely want to put the National Theater on top of the list when planning your day trips to downtown San Jose. Located on Avenida Segunda, the historic building has been entertaining both locals and foreigners with opera, symphony, and other fine art since 1897.

Apart from enjoying the alluring theatrical performances, the building’s neoclassical architecture, lavish finishings, and ornate interior will also be a true feast for the eyes. Several performances are held here every week!

Visit during the International Festival of the Arts that happens in March every year and watch San Jose transform into a giant stage with festivities and live concerts put together by the National Theater.

Children’s Museum

Visiting the Children’s Museum is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in San Jose with kids. The interactive, hands-on museum situated in the Costa Rican Center of Science and Culture and which was once a military prison now allows kids to learn, play, and explore our everyday science and interact with other children in a safe environment.

There are over forty exciting exhibits that can be enjoyed by both children and adults including one that showcases the suffering the prisoners experienced in a building that’s now a fun and happy place. Don’t forget to check out the earthquake simulator; it’s just as fascinating!

Central Market

Although Costa Rica is not known for its vibrant markets a la Mexico and Colombia, the Central Market is the closest you will get to find the best of Costa Rica under one roof. And it’s a great representation of Costa Rica culture!

The traditional Costa Rican cuisine here is sublime, and local food is super cheap , so plan to have a meal here for sure. Then shop the herbal remedies, Costa Rican national dance costumes, and even some souvenirs before you head back out into the hustle and bustle of downtown San Jose.

Museum of Costa Rican Art

Located near La Sabana and the national stadium, the Costa Rican Art Museum is worth visiting for art fans. You’ll find traveling exhibits from some of the area’s best artists, and a gorgeous sculpture garden out back. In all honesty, this isn’t the best of the tourist attractions for families traveling with young kids- teens and university students might enjoy it more.

The building itself is the crown jewel of the museum- it’s two stories built in traditional Spanish style. Make sure ot visit the library ot see the gorgeous carved wooden ceiling.

Brewery Tour

There are tons of craft brewers in San Jose, and many of them are welcoming to children. You’ll enjoy everything from IPAs to stouts throughout San Jose. Some of our favorites are included in our favorite Costa Rican breweries list.

Street Art Tour

There is so much street art in San Jose that it’s almost hard to miss. Almost any neighborhood will have street art if you just venture off the beaten path a little bit. Some of the best viewings are near the university in the suburb of San Pedro.

Street Food

Wander just a bit and you’ll find street food stalls almost everywhere in downtown San Jose. Vendors sell everything from fresh fruit to fresh empanadas and pork tamales. Since you can drink the water in Costa Rica, you don’t have to worry as much about consuming street food- so eat away!

Artisans Market

Just south of the area where the National Theater and museums are is a cute little artesian market that sells the best of Costa Rican souvenirs and decent prices. I recommend stopping by to find some fun additions to your collection. They have everything from t-shirts to earrings to painted masks.
