How much does india cost.

Typically, expect to budget around £8,000 for a 10-day experience staying at two or three luxury tented accommodation. For a longer 22-day safari in India, expect to budget from around £14,000 per person. This will generally include domestic flights to and from Delhi or Mumbai, private jeep safaris in Pench, Kanha and Ranthambore National Parks, four camps and additional unique sightseeing stops.

Where to stay in India?

Complementing the obvious cultural charms that it has to offer; India is home to a truly impressive range of accommodations. Around the popular parks of Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Ranthambore you can find options ranging from authentic tented camps to treetop hideaways and luxury lodges. When to go to India?

The best time to go to India will depend on the region you wish to go to, but if your focus is tracking tigers, it is best to travel during the drier periods between February and April, when rising temperatures increasingly draw predators and prey to fresh water sources. During monsoon season, July to September, most national parks are closed. Read more about when to go to India.

What to expect from a trip to India

Harriet was a great source of advice throughout the planning and the trip. We had many changex and she was patient and flexible in adjusting the itinerary. It was the second trip with her as the Specialist and it won’t be the last. Guides were great!! Loved the vibe and the excellent expertise. Thanks again for creating this memorable experience. Hotels were superb, luxurious but in time and with a local touch. Would have loved to stay longer in each of them.

Dealing with NWS is always a very easy and pleasant experience. You get it dead right for us each and every time we travel with you. We wouldn't even dream of using another agent ever again!

Harriet was fantastic to work with in putting together our dream trip. She turned around an incredibly quick and extraordinarily competitive itinerary for us when we had been let down elsewhere and managed all of our queries quickly and calmly. She was a pleasure to deal with and extremely helpful. This trip was a ten out of ten. We felt incredibly well looked after and utterly immersed in everything we saw. Fabulous local guides and naturalists at every turn ensured we took so much knowledge and appreciation home with us along with brilliant memories. The perfect introduction to this beautiful country. Did I mention we saw a tiger? We'd love to travel again with such brilliant destination information and on-the-ground teams combined with a competitively and sensibly priced approach.

Overall experience was magical and your whole team were very attentive and helpful. The guides were excellent and went above and beyond to make our trips and flights as easy and comfortable as possible. We were delighted with our entire experience!

We have always had excellent experiences with Natural World Safaris.

India Safari Holidays FAQs

Can you drink the water in india.

It is not advisable to drink tap water as the quality can vary, and visitors may not have the same immunity as locals to the bacteria and contaminants that could be present in the water. To avoid potential health risks, it's recommended to drink bottled water or water that has been properly purified or boiled. Many hotels and restaurants provide bottled or filtered water, and it's a good practice to use this water for drinking, brushing your teeth, and consuming ice. Additionally, be cautious with consuming raw vegetables and fruits that may have been washed in tap water. Staying hydrated is important, so ensure you have access to safe water sources during your stay in India.

What wildlife can I see in India?

India has over one hundred national parks to explore on your wildlife safari. Here are just a few of the magnificent animals you can expect to see:

  • Bengal Tiger
  • Indian Elephant
  • Greater One-horned Rhino
  • Snow Leopard

Do you need a visa for India?

Most travellers to India require a visa to enter the country. India offers various types of visas, including e-Visas for certain nationalities that allow you to apply online before your trip. It's important to check the specific visa requirements and application process for your nationality and intended activities in India well in advance of your travel dates.

Is India safe for travel?

India can be a safe and enriching holiday destination, but travellers should exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings. Respect local customs, maintain good hygiene practices, and consume safe food and water. Purchase comprehensive travel insurance, avoid scams, choose reputable transportation, and stay informed about travel advisories. By being vigilant, culturally sensitive, and well-prepared, you can have a positive and memorable experience in India.

As biologists and conservationists, we adopt a scientific approach to the handcrafted design of your  India Wildlife Holidays  and  India tiger safaris . We look at climate change, tiger densities in each park and the seasonality of each key species – then put you in the right place, at the right time, with the right expert guide; to ensure you maximise your wildlife viewing in an ethical way.  Scroll down to our tours below to choose an India wildlife tour which best suits your own personal aspirations

We first visited for 3 months in 1997 and it has been a love affair ever since. We want to show you the real India, not just the famous cities which 90% of all tour companies include in their itinerary. This is not a country to be rushed; but slowly savoured like a good curry. Hop on a train, leave the hustle and bustle of the cities behind and experience the real India, by visiting the beautiful rural villages, which are often located next to tiger reserves, like Ranthambhore, Kanha and Bandhavgarh.

We are famous for insisting on longer stays in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries and personally visiting and checking every element of your safaris with our month long recce trips every year. Where else can you combine a Snow Leopard safari in the Himalayas, with Lions in Gujarat, tigers in central Indian and the magnificent Black Panther in the tropical jungles of the south. India is waiting for you and you could not be in better hands.

The Ultimate Guide to Tiger Safaris in India: Discover the Top 5 Places to Spot Tigers!

India is home to 75% of the remaining wild tigers on this planet, so this is the place to come for a tiger safari holiday. For those with a passion for wildlife photography, mammal watching, or simply the thrill of seeing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, a tiger safari in India is an experience of a lifetime. This expert guide explores the best 5 places to see tigers in India, complete with pro travel tips and personal experiences to help you plan your ultimate tiger safari adventure to India.

Tigers, Tigers Everywhere – But Where to Go on Your Indian Tiger Safari?

We are undoubtedly in a golden period for wild tigers in India. We can say that with more than 20 years of experience visiting India’s tiger parks and having seen our first wild tiger in Ranthambhore national park way back in February 1997. Every wildlife photographers Facebook page seems to be adorned with yet more photographs of tigers with their cubs and tiger sanctuaries like Ranthambhore, Tadoba and Bandhavgarh have ‘too many tigers’ to sustain within the core and buffer areas of the main national park – so what does this mean for you, if you are currently planning your tiger safari in India?

4 Most Common Mistakes People Make on an Indian Tiger Safari

Every year we receive numerous emails from clients who have already booked flights and maybe part of an India tiger safari holiday; but did not prioritise booking the jeeps. They then realise when they try to book the game drives online that all of the main zones are sold out and they basically don’t have a viable option to enter the park.

A Mini Yala for Leopards in Southern Rajasthan, India

It was way back in 2004 that I first heard about the wild leopards of Bera, Rajasthan. I had been visiting many of India’s best wildlife sanctuaries since 1997 and I had enjoyed plenty of luck when it came to seeing tigers in the wild, but a sighting of the elusive Asian Leopard had eluded me. This in part can be explained by the obvious fact that leopards are very cautious around tigers, so a sighting inside the best tiger parks, such as Ranthambhore or Bandhavgarh would be very lucky indeed. In addition, leopards are much more nocturnal in their behaviour – when compared to tigers – so the reality is you are leaving the national parks, just when leopards are starting to be more active

Walking in the Footsteps of Jim Corbett

There are probably fewer iconic parks in India than Corbett; named after the legendary English hunter – turned photographer and conservationist – Jim Corbett. One of the first national parks in India to be given Project Tiger status and a place with so much wildlife and human history wrapped up in its origins, that a visit here just to hear about Jim Corbett; let alone see the wildlife tigers he helped conserve, is both enriching and fascinating at the same time.

Best Place in India to See Tigers. Top 5 Tiger Reserves in India

Best place in India to see Tigers – Top 5 Tiger Reserves in India. India is blessed to be in a ‘golden period’ of tiger safari tourism; with more and more tiger reserves being run in a more professional manner and the number of tiger sightings increasing year on year. Here at Wildlife Trails we are lovers of all wildlife and like to encourage you to visit some of the Indian national parks which are ‘off the beaten track’.

Tiger and Leopard Safari in India and Sri Lanka – Which Parks to Visit?

Sadly when we first visited Sri Lanka back in 2002, the civil war that had torn the country apart for decades was still very much ongoing and national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the North of the island were very much off-limits. While travelling around Sri Lanka I spoke directly with naturalists and leopard researchers who told be about the ‘golden days’ of Wilpattu national park; when it was the ‘go to’ place for seeing the biggest leopards in Asia.

Snow Leopard Tour in Ladakh India

It’s minus 20 degrees Celsius outside and I slip on my fleece lined North Face slippers and venture out. I am greeted by a Tolkienesque type scene outside our simple Ladakh homestay. A half-circle of mountains surrounds us and snow envelopes the hill sides like newly washed linen.

India Wildlife Tour – So Much More than Just Tigers

India Wildlife Tour - is a car and your own driver the best way to see India? After enjoying my first tiger safari in Ranthambhore way back in 1997, I can fully understand how this wonderous animal attracts so many people to take an India wildlife holiday.

India Tiger Safari, Ranthambhore – Is This the Best Park for Tigers?

Is Ranthambhore the best place for a tiger safari on your India wildlife holiday? One of the most common questions we get asked here at Wildlife Trails from people planning their India wildlife tour is ‘which is the best tiger sanctuary to visit?’.

My First Ever Tiger Safari in India!

Rewind to January 1997. I was 26 years old. My ‘round the world trip ticket ‘had been paid for, I was flying out to Nepal to attempt the Everest Base Camp Trek before flying on to Thailand to start my Padi diving course on the beautiful Island of Koh Samui; after that Lao, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Bali and a working visa in Australia.

Our Clients Say About Us

We had a 13 day tour to India, mostly wildlife as this was what we wanted and a little element of city & culture. Day in Delhi staying at the Imperial, apart from noisy traffic getting to the el it was an iconic place to be, so much hitory and staff who had been there 30yrs and proud of what they did. then onto 5 days at Ranthambor - 2 incredible Tiger sightings with so many other species, onto Agra and the Taj Mahal and then the Saptura National Park. Great time was taken in the planning, we were given lots of options as to how to make the trip up including time of year and how to maximize wildlife sighting.

Three weeks in India with the fantastic wildlife photographer and teacher, Trai Anfield, concentrating on finding and photographing tiger and leopard, as well as experiencing all the cultural ders of this extraordinary country. The trip exceeded all expectations. We stayed in a wonderful selection of safari lodges, tented camps, forts and palaces, experienced the food and customs of the regions, visited and spent time with the local people and were in Udaipur to celebrate the paint festival, Holi. Out of all the game drives we did over the three weeks, on only two did we return without having seen either tiger or leopard. A truly outstanding experience in every respect, made even more special by the dedication of Trai Anfield to make sure that her clients had the best possible tuition and opportunities to take the photograph of a lifetime. Excellent in every respect. Everything worked perfectly. The booking arrangements, information and assistance before the trip, local guides and local arrangements all worked extremely well and the trip content, compiled in collaboration with Trai Anfield, was outstandingly brilliant.

We have recently returned from a 16-night trip to India, organised by Wildlife Trails. It was a tailored trip, encompassing safari in Kaziranga and Corbett with city breaks in Mumbai, Kolkata and hi to catch some IPL cricket. Essentially we were on a 16-night, 5 centre itinerary, no more than 3 nights in any one location, involving many and varied transfers by road, rail and air. The chaos which characterises India, and is certainly part of its charm, can cause frustration for travellers – unless they are travelling with Wildlife Trails, who have partnered with ground agents in India who have the knack of short-circuiting the chaos and arriving everywhere with comfortable punctuality, every time. A thoroughly professional service, enabling our party of 4 to fully enjoy the wonderful experiences India has to offer. We had dedicated wildlife drivers/guides during our stays at both Kaziranga and Corbett – in both cases they were very friendly, we were very well looked after by them, and they greatly enriched our experience of the wildlife. We were blessed with tiger sightings at both Kaziranga (2 different tigers on 2 different days!) and Corbett – where we close enough to the tiger to consider it an encounter rather than a sighting. And Rhino galore (including being amongst a sizeable herd on elephant safari), and wild elephant galore, and deer, and monkeys, and fabulous birds. Accommodation at both National Parks was very good, as were the meals. During our city breaks we had guided tours of each city. Our guides were all punctual, very knowledgeable and friendly – our experience of all 3 cities was certainly enriched by our guides. The agents and drivers who assisted with our transfers to and from airports and railways stations were unfailingly polite and helpful – we were delivered to our seats on the train in Kolkata and met at the carriage door when we arrived 19 hours later in Delhi. Kirsty from Wildlife Trails worked with us over several iterations of our itinerary – always offering positive suggestions and responding promptly and fully to our questions. Putting the trip together with Wildlife Trail was a pleasure in itself – and I’m very happy and impressed to be able to say that everything went according to plan. We would all four have no hesitation in recommending Wildlife Trails to anyone considering a wildlife adventure in India.

WE had 2 nights in Delhi at Claridges, perfect as always, 3 nights at Kipling Camp, excellent staff, guide, rooms and best of all picnic by the river to bath the beautiful 'Tara' the phant. Went on to Bandhavgargh 'Bandhav Villas' where we have stayed 5 times, treated like Royalty, the rooms have been upgraded, 6* service and most of all 22 Tiger sightings including mother and 3 cubs, wild dogs and other wild life. What else can one ask for? We have used 'Wildlife Trails' now for at least 7 times. They are very knowledgeable, flexible, good listeners as to what you want to do/see, have really become our 'travel friends'. They arranged tours to India, Sri Lanka and Tanzania for us. They have give an excellent service and have good 'local partners' to be there for you.

It was a great itinerary that allowed us to see all the iconic and unique wildlife of India in the company of excellent guides, thoughtful drivers and accommodation hosts. In Gujarat we saw wild , birdlife including migrating bar headed geese, asiatic lions - which are not as easy to see as you might think and need persistence, Black buck, Indian wolf & jungle cat with leopard, tiger and a very fast moving sloth bear in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The accomodation was excellent particularly Blackbuck Lodge @ Velavadar and Reni Pani @ Saptura and everywhere had top notch hospitality. Travel was by car, train and plane - travelling in India takes some acclimatisation but the drivers and meet & greet guides were very professional and made it as easy as they could! overall it was a well put together holiday which flowed and allowed us to experience India and Indian wildlife at its best. Very efficient and put together; a well thought through itinerary.

Nestled in Assam, Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to the one-horned Indian rhinoceros. Safaris here offer close encounters with rhinos, elephants, and tigers. The park's diverse ecosystem includes lush grasslands and wetlands. Located in West Bengal, the Sundarbans is a unique mangrove ecosystem and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you can embark on boat safaris to witness the elusive Royal Bengal tiger, saltwater crocodiles, and numerous bird species. Jeep safaris take you through dense forests and picturesque landscapes, offering opportunities to spot tigers, leopards, and elephants.

Gujarat's Gir is the only place in the world where you can see Asiatic lions in the wild. Jeep safaris provide a chance to observe these magnificent creatures, along with leopards, crocodiles, and a rich birdlife. Kerala's Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a lush haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Boat safaris on Periyar Lake offer glimpses of elephants, sambar deer, and gaur (Indian bison) as they come to the water's edge.

Meet the Expert

Start your journey, example safari itineraries, our favourite safari locations, kanha national park.

Based in the Maikal mountain range of Satpuras in Madhya Pradesh, also home to the Pench National Park and Bandhavgarh National Parks,  Kanha National Park is a destination celebrated for its high density of tigers. Covering an area of 940 square kilometres, this national park is most notable in popular culture for being mentioned in Rudyard Kipling's  The Jungle Book . For anybody familiar with the story but have never seen this national park, you can get an idea of what to expect: a captivating blend of picturesque landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and a lot of wildlife!

Kanha is renowned for its density. With tall trees that grow up to a height of 100 feet (approximately 30 metres), thick bamboo forests, and lush green fields of tall grass, there is so much to explore. Home to a wide variety of wildlife, you can expect to see leopards, a variety of birds, wild dogs, and barasingha deer, also known as the swamp deer.

Known for its distinctive antlers, the name "barasingha" has Hindi origin and means “12-antlered deer,” it is a highly sociable deer and is listed as an endangered species. In fact, Kanha played a key role in saving the barasingha from extinction through various conservation methods, increasing the population from about 60 to an estimated 800, making it the only place in the world where the barasingha swamp deer can be seen in the wild, and it's not uncommon for you to see herds of 10 to 20 deer roaming the fields and meadows of the park! And the watering holes add serenity to the vibrant jungle, creating the perfect positions to observe wildlife.

Kanha National Park provides an unforgettable tiger safari in India.

TADOBA NATIONAL PARK

Tadoba National Park, also known as the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, is the largest and oldest national park in Maharashtra and is spread across 626 square kilometres in the Chandrapur district, approximately 150 kilometres from Nagpur, the third-largest city in the state.

This park showcases the rich biodiversity of the region in all of its glory. The dense woodlands are home to a variety of wildlife, including a diverse bird population, crocodiles, sloths, leopards, and the majestic tiger. The lush flora alone is dominated by a variety of mango, mahua, bamboo, teak, and sal trees, offering a perfect picturesque setting for your safari exploration.

It is a prime opportunity to witness the iconic Indian bison known as gaurs, the largest extant bovine known for its massive build, strong stature, and distinctive high grey ridge on its forehead between the horns. A relative of domestic cattle, the gaur is a prominent and iconic species in this location with the distinct characteristic of using high whistles to warn other members of the herd of approaching danger.

With a history dating back to 184 BC, Tadoba is an intriguing mixture of culture, mythology, and nature, which only adds to its allure. A rich amalgamation of culture, mythology, and nature with many historical landmarks in the forest landscape, it is a great place to observe wildlife, flora, and its rich biodiversity.

RANTHAMBORE NATIONAL PARK

Ranthambore National Park is situated about 14 kilometres from the Sawai Madhopur district of eastern Rajasthan and is a renowned wildlife destination known for its diverse flora and fauna. Named after the historic Ranthambore Fort located within its boundaries, this park boasts a rich history dating back to the year 1955 when it was established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary. It was declared a national park in 1980 after becoming a Project Tiger reserve in 1973 with the aim of protecting the endangered Bengal tigers.

The park covers approximately 1,334 square kilometres and is characterised by the largest stretch of Anogeissus pendula (Dhok) forest in the whole of India. Ranthambore is home to a variety of wildlife, including Bengal tigers, hyenas, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 300 species of birds. The lush flora includes 539 species of flowering plants that create a beautiful backdrop for your safari adventure.

While notably smaller in comparison to other reserves, this only increases the chances of tiger sightings, making it a prime location for tiger safaris in India, and Reni Pani, a popular wildlife lodge, provides an amazing base to explore all the wonders Ranthambore has to offer. An amazing blend of history, nature, and wildlife, it is a must-visit destination for wildlife lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.

SATPURA NATIONAL PARK

Satpura National Park , based in the Satpura Range of Hoshangabad district in Madhya Pradesh, is a testament to India's ongoing commitment to preserving diverse ecosystems. Covering a vast area of 1,427 square kilometres, Satpura National Park is known for its rugged terrain, deep valleys, sandstone peaks, and a huge network of rivers and rivulets.

In addition to its wonderful scenery, it's home to a huge variety of wildlife, including mammals such as sloth bears, wild boars, spotted deer, porcupines, smooth otters, and Indian giant squirrels, as well as over 300 species of birds and reptiles, including various species of snakes, marsh crocodiles, turtles, and Indian chameleons. And as the park's diverse flora features trees such as sal, teak, bamboo, and various medicinal plants, Satpura National Park has a stunning biodiversity on offer and is a veritable paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.

With a variety of options for safari on foot, in vehicles, as well as on elephant and boat safaris, allow visitors to explore the park's diverse terrain in the way they see fit, and the park's water sources, such as the Denwa River, create picturesque scenes and natural gathering spots for wildlife.

Satpura provides unique sightings all year round, with the summers being fantastic for seeing wildlife in their habitat, with winters also boasting their own mystical charm too! The peak times to visit are between the months of October and June, offering a serene and naturally spoiled environment to explore.

Exclusive Tiger Safaris in India

On trails that resonate his roar...

At Tiger Safari India it is our endeavor to provide you with the best tiger safari holidays in India that have learning, adventure, and unlimited memories. We encourage you to store your experiences in form of videos and still photos which you will fondly go over at a later stage in life with friends, families, and your future generations.

While it is easy to capture people, landscapes, and monuments, capturing wildlife involves certain dynamics. The wildlife documentaries by channels are made with painstaking efforts covering months of filming in unhostile terrain, expensive equipment, special permissions from the authorities, weeks of post-production, and a great deal of resources. The end result is a dream setup. But this is not what you always see when you are on a tiger safari .

The videos below are shot by our team during a safari using a regular video camera, in a regular safari vehicle, no tripods, no extra permissions, and importantly during a 3-night stay in a national park. This is how you see tigers during a wildlife safari .

Tiger safaris in India actually happen throughout the year, but it is recommended to plan a safari tour between the cooler months of October and March. Each and every National Park in India has dedicated tiger safari zones that remain open to the public in longer durations.

It is important to plan your tiger safaris in India a good five months in advance, as it will give top tiger tour operators, like Tiger Safari India , ample time to prepare the best possible trip for you.

The Kanha National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Ranthambore National Park and Jim Corbett National Park are the four most visited and most popular tiger reserves. Each park also brings with it a unique tiger safari experience. Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve has the maximum tiger population and hence the chances of sighting increases.

India is fortunate to have a diverse landscape given that it is located in the south-eastern subtropical range. This helps to preserve a variety of animals in various landscapes and guarantees that each species is cared for in such a wide range of habitats.

Corbett National Park , a forest treasure that gracefully abuts the Himalayan Foothills, is located in the north. It is known as the country of the roar, trumpet, and song because it honours the giant Asian elephant, more than 500 species of birds, and the most tigers per square foot. Now let’s go on to Central India, where Kanha National Park served as the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s “Jungle Book.” Some of the largest male tigers the nation has ever seen can be found in this area.  Kanha National Park & Tiger Reserve  is a park that has been in the forefront of animal protection in India, aside from the tiger.

Such is the diversity India rests on. Below are some of the most toured  national parks for tiger safaris in India .

Tiger Safari India FAQs

FAQs on Tiger Safari Holidays

Either you notice them or you don’t, the odds are always 50%. Although it is advised to do at least 06 continuous drives to maximise your chances of seeing something. However, we must inform you that over the past 19 years, not a single one of our guests has returned without witnessing at least one Tiger.

The animals stay closer to the water sources in the summer (March–May), when the forest dries out and the daytime highs are around 45°C. Our routes have more water bodies and clearer underbrush, which increases the likelihood of spotting tigers. Particularly in the cases of Bandhavgarh, Kanha, and Ranthambore. We have many opportunities to see tigers walking on the Jeep tracks because of the coolness that the winter months [November to February] bring and the abundance of water that is still dispersed throughout the jungle. It also retains a sense of mystery because you could run into the Big Cat at any point during your drive. Wintertime in our Indian Jungles is a visual and intellectual spectacular.

To help you, we have both short and long itineraries available. We have learned from our visitors and from our own experience that the best way to maximise your chances of seeing a tiger is to spend at least 06 nights in the jungle. We’ve had visitors travel India for more than a month at a time, visiting various national parks to witness the diversity of our biosphere and some noteworthy cultural sites.

Tigers, Ranthambhore National Park

India’s wildlife: our safari guide to the central parks

  • Ranthambhore National Park

By India specialist Sophie

Hundreds of national parks and sanctuaries are scattered across India, many with the raison d'être to protect the country’s most remarkable beast: the Bengal tiger. India’s national animal is the star, but the wildlife opportunities in Indian national parks are many layered. Sloth bears and leopards lurk in the shadows while herds of deer and elephant roam freely. The air flutters with electric-blue butterflies and brightly feathered birds.

It can be hard to decide which area to focus on but, for me, the parks of central India offer particularly biodiverse landscapes, as well as the most successful tiger safaris.

India’s central parks

Leopard, Satpura National Park

The network of national parks spread across India’s three central states, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, are well set up for wildlife spotting. The lodges and hotels have honed their skills, employing enthusiastic staff and knowledgeable naturalists.

For the best experience, I suggest dedicating your time to just a couple of the parks — otherwise you can bet a tiger is sighted the day you’re driving in-between two of them. I’ve chosen the four parks that have impressed the most, each offering its own distinct wildlife experience, to choose from.

Safaris in Kanha National Park

Tigers, Kanha National Park

Visit Kanha in February or March and you’ll find the plains ablaze with shocks of red flowers. The flame of the forest, a type of deciduous butea tree, is in full bloom. Outside this period, the landscape of yellow-green meadows and lakes with petrified trees jutting up from them still holds its interest.

Kanha is well-known for its flourishing tiger population and, while not guaranteed, you stand a good chance of sightings. On one afternoon jeep safari, we’d almost given up hope of spotting one. Suddenly, an awful smell hit us and a tiger emerged from the undergrowth dragging a huge wild boar carcass. I hadn’t appreciated how large tigers were until I’d seen one pulling a 90 kg (14 stone) boar with ease.

Aside from tigers, large numbers of deer and blue bulls graze the meadows, and Indian marsh crocodiles lurk near the lakes. You might also spot Indian jackals in small packs and, if you’re very lucky, a leopard.

All safaris in Kanha are by jeep, but many lodges offer walks through the park’s buffer zone that concentrate on birdlife and flora. Lodges also supply bicycles for you to visit some of the local traditional villages populated by the forest-dwelling Gond and Baiga tribes.

How to get to Kanha

The park is best reached by a domestic flight from Delhi to Jabalpur, the closest airport city. From Jabalpur, it’s a three-hour drive to the park.

Where to stay in Kanha

Tented accommodation at Shergarh, Kanha National Park

There are plenty of places to stay around Kanha but, for me, the six canvas tents at Shergarh are hard to beat. Run by a local naturalist and his English wife, the camp is set in a forested area overlooking a freshwater lake. Guests eat together in the main house, and the menu of home-cooked dishes often has an Anglo-Indian twist.

The camp’s naturalists are on hand to take you on walks into the surrounding deciduous forest, along trails well-worn by local villagers. On foot, my naturalist, Rajan, could point out details we’d missed by jeep, including some fresh leopard scat and claw marks in the dust. Turquoise mormon and blue oakleaf butterflies danced around us as we walked, one briefly landing on my shoulder.

Satpura National Park

Sambar deer, Satpura National Park

There’s less focus on tigers at Satpura , although they do live in the vicinity. Sloth bears and leopards take the stage instead, as well as packs of wild dog, the bison-like Indian gaur and sambar deer.

Walking deep into the forest with my naturalist, I could appreciate the smaller animals, including Malabar giant squirrels and clouds of endemic butterflies.

The Denwa River and its tributaries run through Satpura’s gorges and ravines, enabling you to explore by canoe as well as jeep. It’s also the only national park where you can walk on foot inside its boundaries.

I rose early one morning for a canoe safari. The only boat on the river, our canoe’s quiet motion did nothing to interrupt the still of the morning. We pulled onto a riverbank for breakfast as the sun began to rise. As we sat, a family of more than 20 wild boars swam across the river, completely oblivious to our presence. The group swam in a diamond shape, the babies in the middle to protect them from gharials.

The birdwatching at Satpura is among the best I’ve experienced in India, as the waterholes, rivers and lakes provide a variety of environments for endemic and migratory birds. As well as a small colony of the rare Indian skimmer, more than ten types of eagles live here.

How to get to Satpura

Satpura connects well with Kanha , and visiting both parks gives you a good chance of seeing a mix of wildlife. From Kanha, you take a two-hour train journey to Satpura, passing through the Madhya Pradesh countryside.

Where to stay in Satpura

Cottage, Reni Pani

While Reni Pani isn’t in the national park proper, its secluded location surrounded by the thick forest has a middle-of-the-jungle feel. Each of the 12 cottages has a veranda where you can sit and listen for wildlife.

The lights go out around the lodge at evening time so as to not disrupt the wildlife (sloth bears have been sighted in the grounds), which means on a clear night you can see the smallest of stars. Dinner is served under the boughs of a fig tree before guests gather for a nightcap around the bonfire.

Pench National Park

Gaur, Pench National Park

Sat between Kanha and Satpura, Pench is a good addition for a safari if you have the time. It’s a well-populated tiger park, although its huge size and dense forest can make the animals tricky to spot. Fewer visitors lend the park a particularly tranquil feel.

A healthy colony of wild dogs and large herds of gaur roam here, and the teak forests hide the rare flying squirrel. With extreme luck or patience you might see a civet, jungle cat or porcupine.

Due to the small visitor numbers, Pench is a park where you can take a jeep safari to a quiet corner and wait to see what emerges from the jungle. As I watched, a blue-black Asian forest scorpion scuttled across the ground and proceeded to attack the wheel of the jeep with vigour.

Where to stay in Pench

Jamtara Wilderness Camp

Visiting Pench gives you the opportunity to stay at Jamtara Wilderness Camp, ten luxurious safari tents set in an arjuna tree forest.

You can spend a night of your stay sleeping under the stars on a local farmer’s machaan, a stilted platform positioned above a paddy field (traditionally used to guard crops from elephants). A guard is nearby if you need assistance.

A private entrance into the park is only a five-minute drive away, giving you more time in bed than the other camps allow. After a day’s safari, guests congregate under the trailing arms of a banyan tree for drinks around a fire pit.

Tadoba National Park

Sloth bear, Tadoba National Park

It may be one of India’s oldest national parks, but Tadoba has remained off most itineraries — the limited number of places to stay keeps visitor numbers low. The park boasts the highest density of tigers in India, although the dense forest setting means sightings aren’t guaranteed.

In the hotter months, from March to May, the vegetation dies back and the smaller pockets of water dry out, bringing the tigers to the larger waterholes. Sightings are frequent, and I saw a leopard skulking across to the waterside to drink, as well as a pair of civets.

All safaris in the park are conducted by jeep, accompanied by a trained naturalist. When I visited in October, the forest was lush with post-monsoon growth. As the tigers were particularly difficult to spot, my naturalist used track marks and jungle noises to predict where a tiger might emerge, leading us to the spot where a female emerged from the undergrowth into the sunlight.

I’ve long been fascinated with sloth bears. Rudyard Kipling celebrated the species through his character Baloo in The Jungle Book, and modern adaptations of the story have helped conservation efforts to protect the bear, which is native to India’s central parks.

On one afternoon safari in Tadoba, as the light dimmed, we happened upon a pair of sloth bears sloping across the path in front of us, with their distinctive shaggy fur and loping gait. The driver slowed and we trailed them — the pair remained completely unfazed by our presence — until dark.

As you track the larger animals, you’re likely to encounter a variety of birdlife as well as gaurs, langurs, four-horned antelopes (chausinghas in Hindi) and mugger crocodiles. I also spotted a wolf spider the size of my hand.

How to get to Tadoba

Tadoba is a domestic flight from Nagpur, which connects with Delhi and Mumbai , then a three-hour drive. You can combine a safari in Tadoba with Pench National Park (a five- to six-hour drive), carrying onto Satpura or Kanha from there.

Where to stay in Tadoba

Family-run Svasara Jungle Lodge has 12 well-kept cottages in a relaxed environment and the appeal of a swimming pool for the hotter months.

Audley and TOFT

Bengal tiger, Ranthambhore National Park

Audley is a member of Travel Operators for Tigers (TOFT), which together with Global Tiger Patrol supports a sustainable approach to tourism in the Indian Subcontinent’s wildlife reserves.

Key to TOFT’s work is showing the local community that tigers are more valuable alive than dead. A current focus involves encouraging local people to become watchmen or guides so they can make a living while protecting the tiger population.

We make a donation for everyone who travels with us to one of India's national parks where tigers are present.

TOFT also visits a number of lodges in India, helping to promote sustainable practices. All the properties we work with have an eco-rating (known as a pug mark), which you can see on TOFT’s website. You can also download one of TOFT’s Good Wildlife Travel Guides to take with you.

Best time to spot wildlife in India

In February and March, the temperatures average a comfortable 27°C (80°F), rain is rare and the foliage starts to thin out, making wildlife easier to spot. If you can handle warmer temperatures, in April and May the water sources dry out, drawing animals from the jungle to larger lakes, which can lead to some very successful sightings.

The parks close to visitors roughly from June to mid-October, when the monsoon rains fall. India then descends into wintertime. December and January are the coldest months, and I suggest packing thermals, hats and gloves if you visit during this time. Due to the cold weather, mammal sightings are rare but the great migration of sub-Himalayan birds brings eagles, herons and storks down to the plains.

How to make the most of a wildlife trip to India

  • Safari permits go on sale well in advance, and there are more hotel rooms than permits for most parks: I advise planning your trip 9 to 12 months ahead.
  • Consider adding in some cultural exploration. If it’s your first time in India, the Taj Mahal is a simple addition before flying home from Delhi. If you’re a more seasoned visitor, you could fly home via Mumbai.
  • Regardless of when you visit, it can be surprisingly chilly on early morning game drives so I suggest taking a jacket or fleece. In dry weather it can also get very dusty, so a scarf can be helpful.
  • To reduce the impact on the environment, safaris are conducted in shared jeeps of usually no more than eight people (including the driver and naturalist), with space to stretch out and take photographs. Some parks occasionally offer private jeeps, but these are hard to guarantee.
  • The parks of central India never teem with international visitors, but the country has a budding wildlife culture and many Indians visit. During festival time, when many Indians take time off, the parks can get very busy.

Importantly, you don’t see those things when you yourself are on a tiger safari tour.

Tiger Safari India Tour Destinations

There are over 600 national parks in India which are home to close to 200 endangered mammal species. The Royal Bengal Tiger is one of the flagship species as not only is it the apex predator of the very forests that thrive here, but it is also the biggest cat among its brothers.

Recently conducted, the latest Tiger census saw a substantial increase of about 22% in the big cat population. While this is attributed to the commendable effort of the people involved in conservation, this feat is also credited to the resilience and adaptability of the Royal Bengal Tiger throughout the entire Indian subtropical eco-system.

National Parks in India vary with varying tropics and landscapes. We have the dry deciduous forest of Ranthambore National Park in the western part of India, while the evergreen Sal forest of Kanha National Park thrives in Central India. Corbett National Park is unique as it rests in the foothills of the Great Himalayan Range, making it an awe-stunning frame to capture. India has some of the most biodiverse lands, making it a hotspot for wildlife and tiger safaris and nature enthusiasts.

It is also important to note that Wildlife Tourism in India has played a key role in the conservation of important flora and fauna in our national parks. The flow of money into local communities because of tourism-related activities, has considerably reduced the pressure on the forests for bio-mass. This development has allowed the resurgence of wildlife within national parks of India , which in turn allows visitors to immerse in complete wilderness experiences as animals go about their extraordinary lives. Mentioned below are some of the most enthralling national parks for wildlife and tiger safaris in India, that invite eco enthusiasts from around the globe.

Falling in the south eastern sub-tropical range, India is lucky to have a varying geography. This not only helps in conserving a plethora of wildlife in different landscapes but also ensures each of the species are well taken care of in such diverse habitats.

In the north, we have Corbett National Park, a forested gem that falls beautifully in the laps of the Himalayan Foothills. It is called the land of the Roar, Trumpet and Song for it pays homage to most number of tigers per square foot, the great Asian elephant and more than 500 species of birds. Moving on to Central India, Kanha National Park is the milieu on which Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Jungle Book’ was penned. This jungle has some of the biggest male tigers the country has ever seen. Other than the tiger, Kanha is one park which has been at the forefront of wildlife conservation in India. It not only brought back species like the Hard Ground Swamp Deer (Barasingha) but also helped it sister parks with their Tiger and Bison population by successfully translocating a few of them. In the eastern part of India, Kaziranga National Park is a jewel for it is home to the largest population of the Indian One Horned Rhino. The park is also witness to a multitude of Himalayan Bird Species, that bless the jungle with their chirps.

Such is the diversity India rests on. Below are some of the most toured national parks for tiger safaris in the country.

Tiger Safari India FAQs

Faqs on tiger safari holidays.

There are 7 other countries besides India where the Tigers roam free. But India with a population of 2967 tigers has about three-fourth of the world’s wild tigers roaming in 50 tiger reserves. The sheer number of tigers in India increases the chances of sighting them substantially. Out of the 50 tiger reserves you have excellent chances of sighting tigers in at least 15 of them.

The top 3 national parks for a tiger safari India tour are Corbett National Park , Bandhavgarh National Park , Kanha National Park , Pench Tiger Reserve and Ranthambore National Park.

Yes, it is safe to stay inside the national park during your tiger safari trip to India. However, one must be aware that roaming free outside your room post-sunset is strictly prohibited. You could encounter the wildlife of any kind and it could be dangerous. These rules are more specifically followed if you’re lodging in rest house like the Dhikala Forest Rest House in Corbett National Park, but not so much in lodges that are located slightly away from the jungle’s main boundary.

A jeep is an open roofed car which is the most agile form of tiger safari within an Indian national park. It has the capacity to seat a naturalist (also your driver), a guide (as provided by the forest department) and 06 guests while on safari. A canter on the other hand is an open roofed mini bus which has the seating capacity of a driver, guide and 16-20 guests.

In India, the ideal time to view tigers is variable, depending on the season and the forest’s natural rhythms. The months of November through April, the dry season, are ideal for a tiger safari in India. At this period, tigers are more prone to come out of the jungle in search of water, since the foliage is less thick and water sources are sparse.

Tiger sightings, however, are most common between the months of February and April, when temperatures are higher and foliage is thinner. It’s also the mating season for tigers, so you could get to see some amazing antics if you go now.

Several national parks are closed from June to September, the height of the monsoon season, since the forest becomes dangerously muddy and overgrown. When the monsoons have passed in October and November, the jungle is still green and there is a decent chance of seeing tigers.

The dry season in India, which runs from November to April, is the greatest time to observe tigers, with the months of February and April being the peak months for tiger sightings. As tigers are wild creatures, their movements are never certain. Yet, if you schedule your visit well, you may boost the likelihood of a fruitful safari.

Accommodation, safari duration, number of persons in your group, and specific national park all play a role in determining the total price for your India tiger safari. Feel free to enquire any tour and our wildlife tour expert will guide you on everything.

Tigers are wild creatures, thus their whereabouts and behavior can’t be predicted. As a result, it is hard to predict how many tigers you will see on a tiger safari in India . But, the likelihood of seeing tigers on your tiger safari will vary depending on a number of variables, including the specific national park you visit, the season you go, and the length of your trip.

Certain national parks have a larger tiger population than others, therefore your chances of seeing one are greater if you visit such places. A greater probability of seeing tigers may be had in national parks like Bandhavgarh , Kanha, and Ranthambore. Yet seeing a tiger is by no means a sure thing, even in these parks.

The season also has a role in how many tigers you may encounter. As was previously indicated, the dry season (November–April) is the optimal time to see tigers. It is easier to detect tigers at this time of year since the jungle is less thick and they are more likely to go out to get water.

Your chances of seeing tigers on safari may also be affected by how long you go on the trip. Spending more time in the park increases your chances of seeing tigers, so go for a longer safari if you can.

In conclusion, it is difficult to promise a particular number of tigers you will encounter on a safari in India since the amount changes based on a variety of circumstances. Yet, you may improve your chances of seeing these magnificent animals by going on a safari for a longer period of time, going to the correct national park, and visiting at the proper time of year.

There is a wide variety of wildlife in India, so a safari will likely include sightings of more than just tigers. Some animals you could see on a safari in India include:

Leopards are the second biggest big cat in India and may be found in the same national parks as tigers. They’re more difficult to notice than tigers because to their penchant for hiding in plain sight.

The biggest number of Asiatic elephants may be found in India, and they are often seen in the country’s numerous national parks. They are fascinating to see and are usually located close to bodies of water.

Dholes, or Indian wild dogs, are a critically endangered canine subspecies that may be seen in a few of India’s national parks. They’re quite gregarious and always found in groups.

Bears with very long snouts called sloth bears, and they may be seen in most of India’s national parks. They like to be left alone and operate mostly during daylight hours.

The Sambar deer is the biggest kind of deer in India, and it is common to see them in the country’s many protected areas. Tigers and leopards rely heavily on them as prey.

The Nilgai, or “blue bull,” is the biggest antelope species in Asia and may be seen in a number of India’s national parks. A common sight in open grasslands, these birds are easily recognizable because to their distinctive blue-gray coloring.

Opt for early morning or late afternoon safaris, as tigers are more active during these periods. Additionally, hiring an experienced guide that can track tiger movement within the national park and choosing less crowded zones within the parks enhances the likelihood of tiger sightings.

Responsible tourism promotes conservation efforts and minimizes environmental impact. Choosing eco-friendly accommodations, supporting local communities, and respecting wildlife habitats contribute to sustaining the ecosystem for future generations of tiger enthusiasts in India.

While photography is encouraged, some parks may have guidelines to prevent disturbance to wildlife. Using silent shutters and avoiding the use of flash is recommended. Always follow the rules set by the park authorities for responsible wildlife photography. It’s important to note that while mobile phones and small cameras are often allowed for personal use, there may be a fee for the usage of documentary and film cameras inside the national parks. Always check with the specific park regulations for details on camera usage fees.

The duration of a tiger safari can vary. Safaris usually last for 3 to 4 hours, with morning and afternoon sessions. Some parks also offer full-day safaris. Visitors can choose the duration based on personal preferences and the availability of safari options at the chosen destination.

Back to the ranch. The Yellowstone universe keeps expanding, and the franchise’s flagship series is no exception — Paramount renewed the show for a fifth season in February 2022. Starring Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly and Wes Bentley, the drama series premiered on the Paramount Network in June 2018. The modern western has since become a phenomenon, inspiring multiple spinoffs and racking up nominations at various awards shows. In 2021, Yellowstone was one of the most-watched cable shows of the year, with more than 11 million viewers tuning in for the season four finale. Costner has been famous since the 1980s, but Yellowstone has helped him reach a whole new audience. “If I’m out, within an hour, somebody is going to talk about it,” the Oscar winner told Entertainment Tonight in an interview published in March 2022. “You kind of hope that happens a little bit and it has. I think it’s what happens when you have great dialogue and you put it against mountains and rivers and running horses. I think there’s a little gold dust on it.” The show follows the exploits of the Dutton family, who own the largest ranch in Montana. Costner plays family patriarch John Dutton, while Reilly stars as his daughter, Bethany, and Bentley appears as his son Jamie. The ensemble cast also includes Luke Grimes, Gil Birmingham, Danny Huston, Cole Hauser and Kelsey Asbille. When season 4 ended, the ranch had weathered a militia attack led by Jamie’s biological father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton). Beth married Rip Wheeler (Hauser) after tipping a journalist off to the fact that Market Equities planned to squash a protest with help from the National Guard. Jamie, meanwhile, killed Garrett, which Beth plans to use as blackmail in the future. The cast have said they don’t know what’s going to happen until they get the scripts, but Reilly thinks her character is planning revenge in season 5. “Beth has decided she cannot rest until she gets justice,” the actress said in a promotional video for the show. “She wants blood. It’s really kind of intense.” While fans wait for the next installment, there’s plenty of other Yellowstone content to go around. A prequel series titled 1883 premiered in December 2021, starring Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Sam Elliott. Yellowstone cocreator Taylor Sheridan confirmed in February 2022 that 1883 was conceived as a one-season limited series, but a sequel titled 1932 is also in development. Another spinoff titled 6666 was announced in 2021. That series will debut on Paramount+ and will be set at the real-life Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas. In May 2021, a group led by Sheridan purchased the property for $200 million. Portions of season 4 were filmed at the ranch, which was established in 1900.
