JJ Wolf on Western & Southern Open: 'It's the tournament I look forward to the most'

j.j. wolf atp tour

It was a little hard for JJ Wolf to believe that this weekend will mark his fourth appearance in the Western & Southern Open.

"I hadn't thought about that," Wolf said. "Thanks for making me feel old."

It's his home tournament and his favorite, and maybe it means a little more this year after the tournament was moved to New York last year.

Whatever the case may be, Wolf's always happy to play at home.

"I go to a lot of places, but for me, I'm kind of a homebody," Wolf said. "So there's really no place like home. It's kind of the thing I'm working for always throughout the summer, all year really. It's the tournament I look forward to the most.

"It's a world-class tournament and also being in my hometown, not many tennis players get to have that so I feel very lucky."

Last year in New York was the first time Wolf made his way through qualifying – two wins – to play his way into the main draw where he lost in the first round. He'll attempt to play his way into the main draw again this weekend.

Wolf, who's the No. 151 singles player in the world in the ATP Tour rankings, only recently returned to competition after more than eight months away from tennis.

Wolf said he had a double hernia and a sports hernia that required a pair of surgeries. In the month since he's returned he's played in Mexico at the Los Cabos Open, in Atlanta and Washington D.C., and this week, ahead of the W&S Open, Wolf played in Toronto, Canada.

It started with an outfit. Now tennis has led Peyton Stearns to the Western & Southern Open

The W&S Open is a lot more to Wolf than simply a trip home. It's an opportunity to share something he loves with the people he loves. Wolf picked tennis over baseball, soccer and basketball, and he's happy he did. Even happier when he gets to share it with his family.

"Sometimes it can be tough," the former Ohio State star said. "There's a lot of losing that goes on in tennis. There's nowhere to hide when you do. So you always think ... I could be maybe on a boat at the lake hanging with my friends right now, instead I'm grinding out another tournament. But I'm thankful for it. And I think it makes me a stronger person. I wouldn't change it for the world."

The extended Wolf family will be out in full force again this weekend when Wolf takes the court.

"Being able to have my friends and family surrounding me. A lot of my friends throughout the year never actually get to see me play, so I've got a couple friends that are coming in from out of town and taking work off. So I'm going to try to give them a good show," Wolf said.

Wolf, who's still rocking the mullet hairstyle that he adopted a while back, will be on the court Saturday but his opponent and match time won't be announced until later Friday night.

WATCH: Ben Shelton hits incredible winner as Andy Murray tips rising star for SW19 success

Ben Shelton in action

Rising star Ben Shelton played his first-ever top-level match on grass at the Queen’s Club Championship on Monday and judging by his performance he certainly has a great future ahead of him.

It was a debut to remember at the ATP 500 event for the 20-year-old as he defeated fellow American JJ Wolf to reach the second round, although he didn’t have it all his own way as he won via two tie-breakers with the final score 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).

Both sets took over an hour to complete and Wolf had the initial advantage in the opening set as he broke in game two before Shelton returned the favour in game five. The youngster then edged the tie-breaker.

The second set had a similar theme although Shelton was the one to break early to race into a 3-0 lead.

The point of the match came in game four on the Wolf serve at 30-30 after a brilliant approach shot from Shelton just managed to clear the net.

Wolf, though, scrambled and played an equally impressive volley only for his opponent to reply with an attempted lob before the world No 47 pulled off an audacious 360 degree smash – not only playing the ball above his head, but also behind his back.

It would have been a good enough smash to beat most players, but the 6ft 4in (1.93m) Shelton stood still before a jump helped him to put the overhead away in brilliant fashion.

See for yourself…

Quite impressive for a player who only set foot on a grass court for the first time last week.

“Tuesday! Last Tuesday was actually my first time ever hitting on a grass court. Any type of play – I’d never even stepped on one before. So, that was my first day on a grass court,” he told Tennis TV earlier this week.

Shelton, who will take on Lorenzo Musetti in the second round, has enjoyed an astonishing 12 months as just over a year ago he found himself outside the top 500 in the ATP Rankings, but he strung together a series of great performances and currently sits at a career-high of No 35.

Former world No 1 and three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray has backed the youngster to impress on grass over the next couple of weeks.

“I think Ben Shelton will have a good grass court season. I think his game will be very well suited to grass with the way he plays, his serve and everything, he’s very athletic, likes to come forward so I think he’ll do well,” Murray said.

Player to watch: JJ Wolf

j.j. wolf atp tour

JJ Wolf had what you can call some kind of breakthrough on the ATP Tour last week. He reached the final in Florence.

Young American player JJ Wolf always had clean strokes, but for a while, more people noticed him more for his mullet. Do you remember that “serious in the front, party in the back” hairstyle from the 80s? Coupled with some tank-tops, it was the kind of white-trash-inspired attire that you don’t often see on tennis courts. In a way, it was refreshing. Not everyone needs to wear Lacoste.

But these days, his look is cleaner, and his strokes are as good as ever. The pretty straight takeback of the forehand (which looks like an Eastern grip) is unusual but seems to work well for him. He has a pretty complete game and can move fast on the court. It’s hard to see any particular weaknesses, and one of his strengths is that he often takes the ball early.

What racquet does JJ Wolf use?

j.j. wolf atp tour

The racquet JJ Wolf uses is some form of HEAD Speed Pro .  I don’t know which generation it is, but it’s a Speed mold and has an 18×20 string pattern. He has used some form of Speed since his junior days. If you’re interested in purchasing the current Speed Pro, check out my friends at Tennis Warehouse . It is one of the highest-rated racquets on the website.

His string setup looks like Luxilon Alu Power, but it’s hard to tell for sure. If you have inside information about JJ Wolf’s gear, let me know in the comments below.

What do you think of JJ Wolf’s game? I would recommend you to check the highlights of his win against Tsitsipas from Miami on YouTube or watch the breakdown of his forehand technique from 2minutetennis. It’s always fun when an up-and-coming player has a different style and take on the game.

French Open 2024: Andy Murray and Jack Draper knocked out in first round but Carlos Alcaraz advances

Andy Murray beaten in straight sets by Stan Wawrinka in what is likely his last French Open singles match; Murray's fellow Brit Jack Draper knocked out after five-setter against Jesper de Jong; world No 3 Carlos Alcaraz shrugs off any injury fears in breezing past JJ Wolf

Sunday 26 May 2024 22:11, UK

Andy Murray, French Open (Associated Press)

Andy Murray was knocked out in the first round of what is likely to be his final French Open with the three-time Grand Slam champion overpowered by fellow veteran Stan Wawrinka at Roland Garros.

Murray, who says he does not expect to play much beyond this summer, lost 6-4 6-4 6-2 to 2015 French Open winner Wawrinka, the same player who eliminated him in the opening stage when the Briton last played in Paris back in 2020 and also in the 2017 semi-finals on his previous appearance before that.

Murray was broken in the first game of the match as Wawrinka unfurled some booming groundstrokes - a sign of things to come - with the former world No 1 then unable to take the two break points he carved out in the fourth game of the opener.

The 37-year-old could not manage a solitary break point in the second set, one he fell behind in when he was broken by Wawrinka in the third game, while he lost each of first two service games in the third as the Swiss ran out a handsome winner and Murray missed out on a potential second-round meeting with Cameron Norrie.

Murray's French Open is not over just yet, though, as he is scheduled to play in the doubles with Dan Evans.

Norrie, who plays Russia's Pavel Kotov on Monday, is now one of only two Brits left in the men's singles draw, alongside Evans, with Jack Draper following Murray in being eliminated on the opening day following a five-set defeat to Jesper de Jong.

Draper, aiming to reach the second round for the first time in Paris and set up a clash with world No 3 Carlos Alcaraz, recovered from two sets down but then lost the decider, beaten 7-5 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 3-6 6-3 as he fell in the opening round for the second year running.

Alcraraz cruises through opener | Rublev reaches second round

The 23-year-old De Jong, ranked 177th in the world, will next face Alcaraz, who shrugged off any injury fears in breezing past JJ Wolf in straight sets on Sunday

Carlos Alcaraz, French Open first round

The 21-year-old Spaniard's participation at Roland-Garros had been in doubt due to an issue with his forearm that forced him to miss clay-court tournaments in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome, with his Madrid title defence also derailed by the problem.

Alcaraz, a two-time major winner and semi-finalist in Paris last year, was in no obvious discomfort as he dropped only four games in winning 6-1 6-2 6-1 against 25-year-old American Wolf.

"I'm really happy to be back here in Paris to compete again," Alcaraz said after his victory. "It's been a very difficult month for me because I love competing.

"I've tried everything I could to be at 100 per cent, to show my best tennis, and I think I did that today.

"I would have loved to have played more matches but I don't need too many matches to get to 100 per cent. I did really good preparation this past two weeks and practices with top players. My forearm is getting better and better."

Andrey Rublev, of Russia, applauds after winning a match against Taylor Fritz, of United States, during the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament in Madrid, Spain, Friday, May 3, 2024. (AP Photo/Bernat Armangue)

In a more challenging match, Russia's Andrey Rublev, the sixth seed, rebounded from a second-set downturn to defeat Taro Daniel of Japan 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 7-5 in three hours and 11 minutes.

Osaka overcomes early scare | Former champion Ostapenko through

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka survived an early scare when she laboured past unseeded Italian Lucia Bronzetti 6-1 4-6 7-5 to claim her first French Open win in three years.

Naomi Osaka, of Japan, celebrates after winning a point during her match against Daria Kasatkina, of Russia, at the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome, Saturday, May 11, 2024.(AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia)

Returning this year from a 15-month maternity break, Osaka had fallen in the first round at the Australian Open in January but looked set to breeze into the second round in Paris as the former world No 1 bombarded Bronzetti from the baseline in a 28-minute opening set.

However, after being forced into a decider, Osaka nearly imploded when throwing away a 4-0 lead before going on to clinch victory, setting up a potential clash with world No 1 Iga Swiatek in the second round if the reigning champion beats French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean on Monday.

"I'm honestly really excited," Osaka told reporters. "I watched her [Swiatek] a lot when I was pregnant.

"And honestly, I think it's an honour to play her in the French Open, because she's won more than once here. It's a very big honour and challenge for me."

She added on her tournament-opening win: "There were moments I played pretty well, but I was nervous and got very tight in the third set.

"I'm pretty happy, but I would love to not have to go through that rollercoaster again."

Elsewhere, former French Open champion and ninth seed Jelena Ostapenko overcame a rusty start in both sets to beat Romania's Jaqueline Cristian 6-4 7-5 and reach the second round.

The Latvian, who claimed her lone Grand Slam title in Paris in 2017, won the final four games of the first set, but again fell behind to an early break in the second before rallying once more to wrap things up in straight sets.

Je vais me coucher, je suis crevé. Bonne nuit Messieurs !
