Jasper Carrott
Jasper Carrott began his performing career with his own folk club, The Boggery, in Solihull, Birmingham, where he performed songs as well as compering. It didn't take long until his banter overshadowed the songs, and he became known more as a comedian than a singer.
His big break came in August 1975, when he had a surprise top five single with the novelty record Funky Moped - whose success was largely due to the B-side, a risqué monologue about animated children's TV series The Magic Roundabout, being banned by the BBC.
Throughout out the rest of the Seventies, his would regularly release successful albums of his stand-up, requiring him to maintain a high turnover of material. Rather than gags, he pioneered the now familiar style of telling personal anecdotes such as the problems of dealing with a mole in his garden, sitting next to the nutter on the bus, or a visit to Old Trafford.
In 1976, he had his first half-hour stand-up show for BBC Midlands, A Half Hour Mislaid with Jasper Carrott . But two years later his TV career really took off when he was give a stand-up special by LWT, which became a regular event.
In 1982 he moved to the BBC with Carrott's Lib - a Saturday night comedy show broadcast live – which he followed up with such shows as Carrott's Commercial Breakdown,Carrott Confidential, 24 Carrott Gold, and Canned Carrott, which introduced viewers to the double act of Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis
Canned Carrott also featured a regular police drama spoof called The Detectives, co-starring Robert Powell, which was spun off into its own series.
Between 2002 and 2004, he starred in three series of the multicultural sitcom All About Me opposite Meera Syal and Nina Wadia
In 2004, he revived some of his greatest routines for a series of gigs at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, a venue to which he has returned for several Rock With Laughter Christmas concerts, mixing comedy and music.
From 2007 to 2009, he hosted the ITV1 show Golden Balls - but that is not his only connection with gameshows: he was part owner of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? producer Celador. He and his wife Hazel sold their shares in 2006 for more than £10million.
Accolades include the British Comedy Awards' lifetime achievement gong in 2008 and an OBE in 2002.

31 Oct 2019
Comedy great Jasper Carrott and genius impressionist Alistair McGowan have announced an additional 16 dates to their current tour due to popular demand.
An Evening Shared With Jasper Carrott & Alistair McGowan is already wowing audiences up and down the country as a show packed with stand-up comedy, impressions, and anecdotes. But fans and audiences just can’t get enough. So a further 16 dates have been added to the tour, taking dates through to mid-December.
The tour opens with two shows in Harlow on Friday 15 November and Saturday 16 November, and then travels to Kingston, Croydon, Bath, Retford, Harrogate, Portsmouth, Mold, Lancaster and Ulverston, before finishing on Saturday 14 December on the Isle Of Man, where an extra show has also been added.
Jasper and Alistair have each won a legion of fans in their own right with their own individual style of comedy – but combine their talents and wealth of experience, and the show promises an evening of pure entertainment not to be missed.
The pair first teamed up for a one-off festival appearance, and it proved so popular with fans that a match was made in comedy heaven and Carrott and McGowan didn’t want to miss the opportunity of working together on more projects.
This latest tour for An Evening Shared With Jasper Carrott & Alistair McGowan follows extensive touring together for the comedy duo, who have sold out many UK theatres throughout this exciting journey for this joint project.
Alistair McGowan commented: “It’s a terrific show and both Jasper and I really enjoy working alongside each other. The audience go away exhausted from laughing having had over two hours of full-on comedy and impressions – which is an extremely satisfying part of live comedy, you experience that instant feedback in front of your very eyes. The show has become so popular that I hope we’ll find the time to get together again next year and do it all again. But for now, we look forward to seeing audiences round the country this Autumn.”
An Evening Shared With Jasper Carrott & Alistair McGowan will visit the Playhouse in Harlow on Friday 15 November and Saturday 16 November; Rose Theatre in Kingston on Sunday 17 November; Fairfield Halls in Croydon on Wednesday 20 November; Forum in Bath on Friday 22 November; Majestic Theatre in Retford on Saturday 23 November; Royal Hall in Harrogate on Sunday 24 November; New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth on Thursday 28 November and Friday 29 November; Theatr Clwyd in Mold on Tuesday 3 December and Wednesday 4 December; The Grand in Lancaster on Thursday 5 December and Friday 6 December; The Coro in Ulverston on Saturday 7 December; with the tour concluding with its final two tour dates at the Gaiety Theatre in Douglas, Isle Of Man, on Friday 13 December and Saturday 14 December.
The tour comes ahead of a busy 2020 for Alistair McGowan. Following his Number One album in the classical charts for ‘Introduction To Classical Piano, Alistair will also be touring a brand new solo live show. Alistair McGowan – The Piano Show will combine a unique mix of stand-up comedy and the performer’s classical piano playing. The tour is scheduled for Spring 2020, full details will be announced shortly.
Alistair began his career by providing voices for puppets on Spitting Image. He went on to become fondly known for his popular BAFTA-winning TV show The Big Impression, in which he impersonated everyone who was anyone in the early Noughties.
He has worked extensively in theatre and appeared in the West End in Art, Cabaret, and Little Shop Of Horrors for which he received an Olivier Award nomination. He worked at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Merry Wives: The Musical; has twice played Professor Henry Higgins in Pygmalion; and received huge critical acclaim for his performance in the title role in An Audience with Jimmy Savile. He also directed and sang in The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance for Raymond Gubbay.
Alistair was a mainstay of BBC Radio 4 comedy shows during his early career and has written three plays for the network – Three Pieces In The Shape of A Pear about Erik Satie; The Peregrinations Of A Most Musical Irishman about John Field; and The ‘B’ Word about the first production of Pygmalion. He also wrote and performed a one-man stage play about Erik Satie, Erik Satie’s-faction.
His own piano ambitions reached new heights in 2018. Having gone back to the piano at the age of 49 – after reaching Grade 2 as a nine-year-old – Alistair released The Piano Album. The collection featured 17 short pieces by composers including Satie, Liszt, Field, Chopin, and Mompou – which has prompted the next step in Alistair’s journey next year with a live show combining comedy and classical music.
After a 40-year career which took him round the world, Jasper Carrott took a break from live performance. His awards credit include the prestigious BBC TV Personality Of The Year and the British Comedy Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2003, Jasper was awarded an OBE in Her Majesty’s New Year’s Honours List in recognition of his outstanding work for charity.

‘One of the finest and funniest entertainment shows I’ve seen in a long time’ Stage Review
‘Anyone who has never experienced Jasper Carrott, either live or on television will not be disappointed by this show. Complete with his guitar, this Carrott is certainly not past his sell-by date. Alistair McGowan’s performance in which he displayed linguistic genius as the multi-lingual Roger Federer is superb’ The Reviews Hub

Tour Review: Jasper Carrott & Alistair McGowan

Home » Comicus Blog » Review » Tour Review: Jasper Carrott & Alistair McGowan
Jasper Carrott and Alistair McGowan, the bacon and eggs pairing, are a surprising mixture of comedy talent touring the country together with their different but complementary styles of stand up.
Well Observed Impressions
McGowan’s well observed impressions drive his act forward, one after the other, some nicely catching the ear, especially those where other impressionists haven’t yet trodden such as Dara O’Briain, Milton Jones and a wonderful Jo Brand. Alistair goes through a number of current Newsreaders followed later by a traditional ‘Dads Army’ routine, mimicking most of the famous sit-com characters in story line fashion. He wastes little time getting into a sporting theme of football managers not only impersonating them but parodying their styles, Mourinho, Hodgson and Southgate among his targets.
There is no better impressionist than McGowan in the country. Although this talent has led to TV series, tours and plenty of voice over work, it is often forgotten he started as an Actor, trained at the Guildhall. A performer who was blessed with the gift of doing voices, taking his talent into the comedy clubs at a time impressionism was losing its appeal. It’s what McGowan did with his work that brought him success and with it the inevitable pigeon holing that occurs in the entertainment business. It may surprise some, to hear of his solo tour as a pianist, playing some of his favourite pieces after enjoying a classical chart-topping debut CD, simply named Alistair McGowan: ‘The Piano Album’. He’s acted in the theatre for the RSC and TV dramas such as Dickens ‘Bleak House’. Alistair may say in a Michael Caine accent – ‘Not a lot of people know that’.

Jasper Carrott & Alistair McGowan: Attention to Detail
What both these artistes have in common is their attention to detail, what works, what doesn’t, new bits and old bits discarded at a time most would be happy to sit back and ponder their career while criticising the youngsters coming up, with the beginning phrase, ‘In my day ..’ Not these two. Still fighting for their audience and enjoying it. Jasper the elder statesman quite comfortably admits ‘times have changed, my television days are over’.
That doesn’t mean he’s a lesser comic. Carrott has looked after himself, voice fully intact and the delivery remains the same, with clever building of anecdotal routines through a street attitude and mentality that once sold millions of comedy LP records. The style may seem common today, but back when he made his name, it wasn’t. The traditional one liner and drawn out joke was the norm. He started his career in the folk clubs rather than the social & cabaret scene, hence his delivery was something different, refreshing and nothing has changed.
Comfortably Carrott
Jasper, now in his seventies, moves around more than he did in his heyday. Comfortably strutting the stage in traditional comic style, mike on a lead as opposed to his 1970’s static stance with guitar around neck, which he seldom played. Now he collects his stringed instrument from the wings, to regale us with some hilarious short, sharp parodies of recognisable songs. His anecdote on meeting Diana Princess of Wales for the first time was typical of his style, contrasting a down to earth attitude against a pompous hierarchy. His other targets include Birmingham Airport, Wolverhampton, wigs and Trump – ‘Where’s Lee Harvey Oswald when you need him’? He also gave a replay rendition of his famous ‘car insurance’ routine with updated cases of drivers trying to explain their actions in an accident. Appealing to the audience to send him more.
There’s plenty in this show to be enjoyed by younger comedy fans, as both artists are far from their performing sell by date.
