Java Overland

Travel by local train, road and boat from Central Java to Bali on our exciting new 2-week Indonesia tour

Indonesia. Java Overland. Borobodur Temple, Java

Ancient temples, towering volcanoes, vibrant street life

Our fascinating, varied and original Java Overland tour takes you on a 12-day journey by road, rail and boat through Central and East Java to finish at a charming eco-lodge in a little-visited corner of the island of Bali.

Beginning in delightful Yogyakarta Town, we’ll travel through emerald paddy fields, lush forests and past towering volcanoes, traditional villages and ancient World Heritage temples. We’ll visit the fun and friendly towns of Yogyakarta, Solo and Malang with their ancient, Dutch colonial-period architecture, colourful markets and vibrant street life, and of course, delicious street food.

A few of the many varied highlights on our Java Overland tour include awe-inspiring Borobudur – a 9th-century Buddhist temple and a dusk visit to Prambanan Temple – both World Heritage sites, an early morning jeep ride through an active caldera to watch the sunrise over Mount Bromo; a walk through Malang’s amazing labyrinthine ‘ Rainbow Village ‘; meeting the extremely friendly locals on a walking tour of Solo’s colourful market and a day’s exploration on foot, by boat and by jeep of the remote and rarely visited Alas Purwo National Park.

As with our other tours, the emphasis is on combining both the famous and off-the-beaten-track sites, while staying in smaller. boutique and eco-style hotels, sampling the superb, authentic local cuisine and meeting plenty of the island’s fantastically friendly inhabitants.

We’ll finish the tour in Bali, which, along with its convenient flight connections, offers the opportunity for a variety of beach or island extensions including our fantastic 1-week mini-tour to Flores and Komodo .  For those with more time, a 7-day Sumatra tour – including Lake Toba and UNESCO-listed Gunung Leuser National Park – can be added before joining the tour in Yogyakarta making for an 18-day Sumatra, Java and Bali tour while, last but not least, an optional 4-day/3-night tour of the capital Jakarta is also available.

Please note; since airfares are fluctuating wildly at present, as well as varying considerably from period to period, our ‘with flight’ prices, below, are approximate only. Includes: Meals: B x 11, L x 3, D x 6

*This list should be considered a guide only, hotels/rooms may change (without notice) depending on availability.

Visas: For most nationalities, a 30-day visa on arrival is issued on arrival at any international airport such as Medan, Yogyakarta or Jakarta. The cost is 500,000 rupiah, which looks like a lot of zeros but $35 (approx. depending on exchange rates) also does the trick. ( See list here .) As usual, 6 months validity from the date of arrival is essential as is at least 1 empty page in your passport and you may be asked to show proof of departure from Indonesia.

Your standard entry point for this tour is Yogyakarta International Airport and exit port is Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasara, Bali).

Tipping: we recommend a kitty system for the smaller, daily tips such as hotel/restaurant staff and local guides and drivers. Amounts inevitably vary with group size but would generally be in the region of around $2-3 per person, per day. With regards to guides accompanying you for longer periods we’d recommend a separate tip of approximately $2-3 per person, per day though of course, this is always discretionary and performance-related. (Local currency or USD are fine.)

Meals: as usual breakfasts are generally hotel buffets with lunch and dinners based on local food. Many Indonesian dishes are internationally famous such as sate, nasi goring, rendang, gado gado etc but there’s much much, more with the already varied cuisine supplemented by plenty of regional specialities as well. Dishes are generally mildly spiced with sambal, the ubiquitous chilli sauce, served separately and there’s a wealth of vegan and vegetarian choices.

For certain, included, meals your tour-leader will order a selection of dishes, local-style, while a number of meals are not included, which allows you to ‘do your own thing’ or take a break if you’re feeling ‘riced out’.

Accommodation: our selection consists of comfortable 3-4* options with en-suite bathrooms, air-con and, in most cases, pools with the emphasis on smaller heritage and/or eco-style choices.  We have posted a selection of sample accommodation on the lefthand hotel tab but please note that as we try and avoid the larger hotels, availability, in high season particularly, means we use several options in each destination

Activities: note that no activities are compulsory and that any offered, including trekking, can be tailored for any fitness level or alternatives suggested. Be warned there are a couple of very early starts for sunrises on this one!

Further info: detailed descriptions and photos can be found on the corresponding Java page of our travel blog.

When embarking on this tour, it’s important to know what to expect in terms of climate, accommodation, transportation, and the essential items you should bring along. Here is a breakdown of these aspects to help you prepare for your trip.

Bali typically experiences temperatures ranging from 26°C to 28°C. To ensure your comfort throughout the tour, it is recommended to pack light and comfortable clothing. This will help you stay cool in the tropical climate and enjoy your activities without feeling weighed down by heavy garments.

Accommodation:

During the tour, accommodation options range from 3-star to 4-star hotels, depending on the specific package you choose. These accommodations have been carefully selected to provide you with comfortable and convenient stays throughout your journey. Rest assured that the hotels chosen offer quality services and amenities to enhance your overall travel experience.

Transportation:

To facilitate your transportation needs, the tour includes the exclusive use of air-conditioned private cars. This ensures a comfortable and pleasant journey as you explore various destinations. The cost of toll fees, parking fees, and fuel is already included in the package, allowing you to relax and enjoy the sights without worrying about additional expenses or logistics.

Essential Items to Bring:

To make the most of your time in Bali, it is recommended to bring a few essential items that will contribute to your overall comfort and protection. These items include:

1. Hat: The tropical climate of Bali can be quite warm, and a hat will provide shade and protection from the sun’s rays. This will help prevent sunburn and keep you cool during outdoor activities.

2. Comfortable Shoes: Exploring the various attractions and landmarks in Bali may involve a fair amount of walking. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes that provide proper support and cushioning to avoid discomfort or fatigue.

3. Sunscreen/Sunblock: Given Bali’s proximity to the equator, the sun can be intense. Applying sunscreen or sunblock with a high SPF will help protect your skin from harmful UV rays and prevent sunburn. Remember to reapply throughout the day, especially if you engage in water activities.

4. Raincoat: While Bali is known for its sunny weather, occasional rainfall can occur. Having a lightweight raincoat or poncho on hand will keep you dry during unexpected showers and ensure you can continue your activities without interruption.

By considering these recommendations and being prepared with the appropriate clothing and items, you can fully enjoy your tour of Bali. Remember to pack wisely and prioritize your comfort, protection, and enjoyment throughout the journey.

Please keep in mind that specific details regarding the tour itinerary, additional inclusions, and any other pertinent information will be provided to you upon booking. We are a group of 11 people from Taiwan and join the trip arranged by Hernan-Indoglobal Adventure for the Java Bali Overland Tour. Originally we asked for a Mandarin guide which was not available, so Hernan took the job guiding our group. He spoke fluent English that was easy to understand even we are not English native speakers. He was cheerful and acting like a friend, playing and laughing with us which made our trip more pleasant and memorable. He even efficiently helped us get back a backpack left in the Java hotel and returned to Bali hotel in one day. The hotels we stayed are the most luxurious ones we ever had. We left our heart in Indonesia and decide to visit his hometown Sulawesi, of which he suggested worth a visit next year.

If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Buitenzorg literally means without worry and you’ll come to understand why this title is so fitting! Bogor is a welcomed escape from the metropolis of Jakarta. Located at the foot of the 2,211 m high Gunung Salak, Bogor’s higher elevation also makes its temperature more pleasant than Jakarta’s. Settle in and enjoy your first evening in Bogor.

Explore Kebun Raya

Today you have ample time to visit the world-famous botanical garden: Kebun Raya. This beautiful garden of 80 hectares is home to over 15,000 different plants including 400 different kinds of palms. The grounds wrap around the former presidential palace which is a true sight to behold. A walk through the park leads you along rivers and delicate lotus ponds. At the highest point of the garden lays an atmospheric colonial tea and coffee house where you can enjoy refreshments.

Puncak Pass and Tea Plantations to Bandung

Passing several tea plantations and Sawa's, you will soon arrive in Bandung. On the way, you’ll pass through tea plantations as far as the eye can see and can even visit a tea factory along the way! When Bandung was erased in 1920, the plan was to make a modern city, and architects were called from Europe to use the art deco style here for the design of the buildings. There are still some nice examples to be seen. The museum Geologi and the museum Asia Afrika here are both well worth a visit.

Tangkuban Perahu Volcano and Hot Springs

By car, you can get up as high as the crater of the active volcano Tangkuban Perahu. It is beautiful to walk along the rim of the crater of this 2,076m high volcano. Nearby the volcano you can take a relaxing hot bath at the natural hot springs of Ciater.

Further on you can visit Naga, a traditional Sudanese village that still lives a step back in time. Late In the afternoon you will arrive at the small peninsula where Pangandaran is located.

In the morning you’ll leave the south coast and drive up to the mountains to the city of Wonosobo. Wonosbo lays on the edge of the 2,000 m height situated Dieng Plateau. The night here can be cold thus a sweater can come in handy!

Java’s Temples and Mountain Paths to Borobodur

In the early morning, the mysterious landscape of Dieng is at its best. The oldest Hindu temples of Java appear serene from the mist. A walk down along mountain paths with beautiful views on the slopes and along the vegetable gardens of the farmers is hard on the knees but very pleasant. Before you head on to Yogyakarta you will visit the nearby Pawon temple, which is in the middle of a typical village, and Mendut temple with its magnificent statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni.

Mid-day you will continue to Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java.

This private museum houses a great collection of excellent Batik, antique and Royal textiles from Java and China etc. A guide will lead you to the 11 rooms with all kinds of Batik. At the end and in the back of the museum you see about 200 people working in a big hall processing the batik textiles using different techniques.

Travel time today is approximately 7 hours.

Drive along the north coast of East Java to Banyuwangi today to reach Java’s east coast port. Here you’ll be fascinated by locals diving into the water off high construction poles to fetch the coins dropped into the water by passengers. A short boat journey with the local ferry will then bring you to Bali, the fabled Island of Gods and Demons. Travel time today is approximately 5 hours.

Adventures in Lovina

A day with lots of optional activities for you to choose from (not included). If you want to see dolphins, prepare to get up early, and go out on the sea by small boat. Or for excellent snorkelling and diving head to Menjangan (Deer) Island, part of the West Bali National Park. Or take a step back in time and visit the old Colonial houses or the only Buddhist temple there is on Bali. The warm springs of Banjar, finally, are also worth visiting.

Gigit Waterfall and Bratan Mountain Lake

First, you visit the Gitgit Waterfall and proceed on to Bratan Mountain Lake, which is situated at a height of 1,240 meters. The Pura Ulun Danu temple in this lake is said to be home to the Danu goddess, who is responsible for the water distribution to Bali’s many rice terraces. Travel time today is approximately 6 hours.

Free Day in Ubud

A wide range of optional excursions (not included) are possible for exploring Ubud today and its surroundings. Interesting temples and palaces such as the Elephant Cave, Tampak Siring or the famous Pura Besakih (the mother temple) and Kintamani are only a few of the interesting sights to visit. Trekking around Ubud rice fields, white water rafting and spa treatments are also available. Interesting dance performances in former palaces or temple ceremonies are worth a visit, too! And last but not least, the many galleries in and around Ubud offer a wide range of handicrafts and arts.

Ubud to Sanur

A short drive will bring you to Sanur, a tranquil coastal town on the southeast coast of Bali. A perfect place to relax and let all the impressions of the adventure thus far settle down in your mind forever. The accommodation for the night is a pleasant cozy bungalow near the beach.

Explore Sanur

You will have the opportunity to visit Bali highlights, rafting, cycling etc. Sanur has a wide range of excellent restaurants and shops for your souvenirs. It also has a peaceful, quiet beach.
