Escape (2022 Remaster)

“Don’t Stop Believin’” wasn’t the biggest single on Escape, or even the second. But the fact that we’re still prepared to hear it anywhere and at any time—grocery stores, baseball games, karaoke bars, finales of revered prestige-television series—is a testament to how deeply the song lodged in the cultural imagination. Like The Beatles in the 1960s, Led Zeppelin in the 1970s, or Nirvana in the 1990s, Journey captured their era, but they also transcended it. Listening to Escape, released in 1981, you can hear the blockbuster sound of the early Reagan years—the passion, the hair, the lights. But you can also hear the seeds of everything from Bon Jovi to Foo Fighters and Imagine Dragons—that blend of muscle and sensitivity that has defined arena rock for more than four decades. Interestingly, the singles that outshined “Don’t Stop Believin’” at the time—“Who’s Crying Now” and the Motown-esque “Open Arms”—pointed toward the past. And as an album in the era of so-called album-oriented rock, Escape is actually kind of weird, governed at one extreme by rowdy hard rock (“Dead or Alive”) and at the other by the fusion-curious sound the band had perfected long before vocalist Steve Perry was called up from the minors (“La Raza del Sol”). Talking to an interviewer in 2008, Perry described the feeling of being at a club and seeing a new generation sing along to “Don’t Stop Believin’” on the stereo: “There’s something reverent about that to me,” he said. “And I only wish to protect it, because it means something to them like it means something to me.”

Journey Releases First Studio Album in Over a Decade, Ahead of 50th Anniversary

journey 2022 song list

Journey’s Arnel Pineda, Neal Schon, and Jonathan Cain

Journey have released  Freedom , their first studio album of all new songs in over a decade. Listen to many of the tracks below. The album arrived July 8, 2022, via BMG (and on Frontier Records in Europe and Japan).

The band returned to U.S. arenas on Feb. 22 with the Freedom Tour 2022 with Toto as special guest. Though that tour is complete, they have many more dates scheduled for the summer and into 2023, when they’ll be celebrating their 50th anniversary.

In June 2021, Neal Schon noted that they had written dozens of new songs , and were “whittling it down to 10 or 12.” [It actually features 15 songs.] Over that summer, the band’s new lineup headlined the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago and played Central Park at We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert, in addition to honoring 9/11 first responders at the Tunnel to Towers concert in August.

Journey features founder Neal Schon (lead guitarist), Jonathan Cain (keyboards, backing vocals), Arnel Pineda (lead vocals) Jason Derlatka (keyboards, backing vocals), and Deen Castranovo (drums, backing vocals). Randy Jackson returns on bass guitar, on the album but is not touring with the group while he recovers from surgery.

“United We Stand” was released on the 4th of July. “More than ever, we need to take care of each other and look after one another,” the band wrote on their social media platforms. “‘United We Stand’ is a reminder that together we can make a difference.”

Of “Don’t Give Up On Us,” Schon says, “It is a very melodic song. It’s soulful, coming more from that R&B place and a little more Motown sounding but it definitely rocks. I feel like it’s got Journey all over it.”

Of their 50th anniversary next year, Schon told USA Today , “there’s room for [the band’s storied alumni] to jump in if they want to participate. If Steve Perry wanted to come on and sing a song, yes. If (original Journey singer) Gregg Rolie wanted to come sing a couple of songs, yes.”

Schon was asked about his current relationship with Perry. “We are in contact,” he said. “It’s not about him coming out with us, but we’re speaking on different levels. That’s a start, even if it’s all business. And I’m not having to go through his attorney! We’ve been texting and emailing. He’s a real private guy and he wants to keep it that way. We’re in a good place.”

Watch them perform “Any Way You Want It” on the tour’s opening night, Feb. 22

“I wanted kind of a punky rendition of ‘Any Way You Want It’,” says Schon, the group’s guitarist, songwriter, and producer, about the first single, “You Got the Best of Me.” “I usually don’t go in saying I’m going to look for something like that, but then it just came to me, like ‘Wheel in the Sky’ did years ago. It just kind of flew out of my mouth.”

Of “Let It Rain,” Schon notes, “We didn’t immediately work on the song, it just sat there as a jam for a long time, and then every once in a while, I’d come in to work on something, and Narada (Michael Walden) would play it for me, and I’d go, ‘Wow, we should really f**king work this thing up, there’s something there.’”

Journey Preview New LP ‘Freedom’ With ‘You Got the Best of Me’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Journey ‘s new LP Freedom is arriving on July 8, and they’ve just shared their new single “You Got The Best of Me.”

“I wanted kind of a punky rendition of ‘Any Way You Want It’”, guitarist and Journey founder Neal Schon said in a statement. “I usually don’t go in saying I’m going to look for something like that, but then it just came to me, like “Wheel in the Sky” did years ago. It just kind of flew out of my mouth.”

Freedom is their first collection of original songs since 2011’s Eclipse . They created much of it during the pandemic, working at different studios from around the globe. “During the pandemic, there wasn’t much to do,” Schon said. “I spent a lot of time in my little studio at home, learning how to play keyboards and looping. Some of those ideas ended up being songs. So it kind of came out of nowhere.”

It’s also their first album since parting ways with founding bassist Ross Valory and longtime drummer Steve Smith following a business dispute over the band’s trademark. They were replaced by Raised On Radio -era bassist Randy Jackson and drummer Narada Michael Walden.

“It’s somewhat like the sound back in the Eighties when Randy Jackson joined the band for the Raised on Radio album,” frontman Arnel Pineda told Rolling Stone last year. “Narada is producing my vocals and mentoring me on how to do it. He’s telling me to sing it this way and that way. It’s amazing. I’m learning a lot from Narada. It’s truly an honor and I appreciate him for doing so. It’s amazing.”

Walden stepped away from Journey when they hit the road earlier this year. He was replaced by Deen Castronovo, who toured with the band from 1998 until 2015. Jackson plays bass on the album, but he hasn’t been on the road with them this year. Todd Jensen has been filling in for him.

Journey has been playing American arenas with Toto since late February. The set is heavy on their classic hits, but they did play new song “The Way We Used To Be” at some of the early shows. The tour wraps up May 16 in Quebec City, Canada. In July, they are playing a brief residency Resorts World in Las Vegas where they will be joined every night by a symphony.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

In the longer term, a biopic about Arnel Pineda is in the works by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu and Joker / The Fighter screenwriter Scott Silver. “I’ve spoken many times with Scott Silver,” Pineda told Rolling Stone last year. “What’s interesting about my story is that I’ve survived two coup attempts here in the Philippines before I went to Hong Kong for 10 years. I don’t know he if plans to tell what happened to me in Hong Kong, but I had 10 years there. He might focus on my love story with my wife now.”

He thinks the movie might end when he made his debut with Journey at a Chilean stadium gig in 2008. “I’ve been implying it to him that we should end everything in Chile,” Pineda said. “And I remember when my wife decided to join me on tour in 2011. We were playing to a 30,000 crowd that night. I was telling my wife, ‘Remember Hard Rock Cafe when there were only three tables? Now it’s 30,000 people.’ It was just unbelievable. It doesn’t get old to me. It’s still so surreal and bizarre.”

All these spectacular Journey albums have been presented below in chronological order. We have also included all original release dates with each Journey album as well as all original Journey album covers. Every Journey album listed below showcases the entire album tracklisting.

JOURNEY STUDIO ALBUMS

Released: April 1, 1975

Journey’s self-titled debut album was released in April 1975 and was the band’s first outing into the musical world. At the time, Journey was yet to adopt the arena rock sound that they would later become famous for. Instead, the album exhibited strong influences of jazz fusion and progressive rock, with extensive instrumental solos and complex musical arrangements.

Notable tracks include “Of a Lifetime” and “Mystery Mountain,” which offered a glimpse into the technical proficiency and artistic aspirations of the band. Though the album didn’t achieve significant commercial success, it laid the groundwork for what the band could accomplish. The album featured Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Aynsley Dunbar on drums, and George Tickner on rhythm guitar. It was produced by Roy Halee and recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco in late 1974. .

CD Track Listings:

  • “Of a Lifetime” – 6:48
  • “In the Morning Day” – 4:23
  • “Kohoutek” – 6:40
  • “To Play Some Music” – 3:16
  • “Topaz” – 6:09
  • “In My Lonely Feeling / Conversations” – 4:56
  • “Mystery Mountain” – 4:25

Look into the Future

Released: January 1976

Released just a year after their debut, “Look into the Future” was Journey’s second studio album. The band continued in a similar vein, leaning heavily towards progressive rock with intricate instrumental arrangements. The title track and “On a Saturday Nite” are often cited as highlights. However, the album failed to bring substantial commercial success, although it was a step forward in terms of songwriting and complexity. Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, and Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals returned for this album, with Aynsley Dunbar continuing to provide the drum work. The album was produced by Glen Kolotkin and was recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco during late 1975.

  • “Look into the Future” – 8:08
  • “On a Saturday Nite” – 4:02
  • “It’s All Too Much” – 4:03
  • “Anyway” – 4:12
  • “She Makes Me (Feel Alright)” – 2:43
  • “You’re on Your Own” – 5:54
  • “Look into the Future” – 8:13

Released: February 1977

“Next,” Journey’s third studio album, represents the end of an era for the band in terms of their experimentation with progressive rock and jazz fusion. Songs like “Spaceman” and “Hustler” continue to echo their earlier styles but also hint at the more commercial sound the band would later adopt. While not commercially successful upon its release, it gained some retrospective recognition for marking a transitional phase for the band. As with the previous albums, the lineup featured Neal Schon on guitars, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Ross Valory on bass, and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. Produced by Glen Kolotkin and recorded at His Master’s Wheels Studio in San Francisco in late 1976, “Next” was the last Journey album to feature solely Gregg Rolie on lead vocals.

  • “Spaceman” – 4:01
  • “People” – 5:19
  • “I Would Find You” – 5:20
  • “Here We Are” – 4:16
  • “Hustler” – 3:14
  • “Next” – 5:26
  • “Nickel & Dime” – 4:13
  • “Karma” – 5:12

Released: January 20, 1978

“Infinity” marked a major turning point in Journey’s career, introducing vocalist Steve Perry and adopting a more mainstream, radio-friendly sound. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker and recorded at His Master’s Wheels Studio and Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles in late 1977, the album was a commercial success. It featured hits like “Lights” and “Wheel in the Sky,” which have since become staples of classic rock radio. The album peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified 3x Platinum in the United States. “Infinity” was the last album to feature Aynsley Dunbar before he was replaced by Steve Smith. Alongside Dunbar, the album featured Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, and the newly added Steve Perry on vocals.

  • “Lights” – 3:09
  • “Feeling That Way” – 3:26
  • “Anytime” – 3:28
  • “Lă Do Dā” – 2:55

  • “Winds of March” – 5:04
  • “Can Do” – 2:39
  • “Opened the Door” – 4:34

Released: April 5, 1979

Top 10 Songs Journey Haven’t Played on Their 2022 Tour Yet

It would be impossible for Journey to play all of their popular hits in just one night.

The ever-evolving group has released 14 studio albums and more than 50 singles since launching in 1975. Any venue's curfew would kick in long before Journey were done playing all of their Top 100 charting hits.

Journey kicked off their Freedom tour in February 2022, led by guitarist Neal Schon – the only member to appear in every lineup since the group's formation. Logically the set list is packed with the band's biggest hits and most beloved album tracks; there's also been with a renewed focus on songs from 1986's two-times platinum-selling Raised on Radio album.

Still, you could fill up the set list for a pretty great show using only songs Journey aren't currently performing on tour. Based on setlist.fm information, here's a look at the 10 best songs Journey haven't played on their 2022 tour yet.

1. "Feeling That Way" / "Anytime" From: Infinity (1978)

These two songs, forever paired on radio playlists, capture Journey at an important moment of transition. Infinity was their first album to feature Steve Perry as lead singer. Greg Rolie , who had been occupying that position, remained in the group as a keyboard player and shared vocal duties with Perry on both of these tracks. The moment serves as a torch-passing between the two singers and more importantly as a bridge between the earthier sounds of the band's earlier years and the soaring pop music they'd ride to worldwide fame in the next decade. The band performed the songs live during an intimate July 2021 show at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, prior to their headlining appearance at Lollapalooza.

2. "Just the Same Way" From: Evolution (1979)

Rolie and Perry once again shared lead vocals on the first single released from the band's next record, 1979's Evolution . The album title proved to be very appropriate, as longtime Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker and engineer Geoff Workman helped emphasize the band's increasingly sharp vocal hooks. "Just the Same Way" was most recently performed at Journey's July 2021 Lollapalooza show .

3. "Daydream" From: Evolution (1979)

Journey takes a languid, progressive-rock leaning trip through the stars on Evolution 's penultimate track. Drummer Steve Smith told Something Else! the song was born from group jam sessions: "Most of Journey's music was developed collectively at first, and then fine-tuned into songs." According to setlist.fm , Journey has only performed "Daydream" live 15 times, most recently in 2015. Schon also played the song with various current and former band members on his Journey Through Time dates.

4. "The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)" From: Captured (1981)

The only studio-recorded song from Journey's 1981 live album Captured was written by Perry backstage before a show at Detroit's Cobo Hall, according to the liner notes for the band's 1992 Time3 box set. The band then tried the song out at soundcheck, and liked it enough to record it and release "The Party's Over" as a single. The public agreed with their assessment, sending the song to No. 34 on the pop charts. But the song has reportedly only been played by Journey at 57 concerts , most recently on March 6, 2015.

5. "Still They Ride" From: Escape (1981)

This album was a massive commercial breakthrough, as the addition of Jonathan Cain helped Journey crystalize an irresistible new sound. In fact, Escape was so packed with hit singles – including permanent concert staples "Who's Crying Now," "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms" – that "Still They Ride" had to wait until nearly a year after the original LP's release to get a shot at the pop charts. It still reached the Top 20, and the song has been performed live with some regularity in recent years, most recently at Journey's Dec. 1, 2021 show in Las Vegas.

6. "Someday Soon" From: Departure (1980)

This was final song to feature Rolie and Perry sharing lead vocals, as the keyboardist left Journey soon after working on 1980's Departure . "That song was really difficult to write," he told Something Else! "The lyrics just wouldn't come. Finally, that's what popped into my head – 'someday soon.'" Setlist.fm reports that there have been just five live performances of "Someday Soon," with its last appearance taking place way back in 1999.

7. "Do You Recall" From: Evolution (1979)

It's reportedly been more than 40 years since Journey performed "Do Your Recall" live, on Oct. 9, 1981 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. It's not hard to picture an arena full of fans rocking out to the song's main guitar riff, which is vaguely reminiscent of the Move's "Do Ya."

8. "Departure" / "Good Morning Girl" / "Stay Awhile" From: Departure (1980)

Perry and Schon's songwriting chemistry was in full bloom on this three-part song suite, which culminated with "Stay Awhile," the singer's tribute to old school rhythm and blues. Schon's opening guitar solo was trimmed for a 1980 single release, which peaked at No. 55 on the singles chart. "Stay Awhile" was performed numerous times on Journey's 2013 tour.

9. "After the Fall" From: Frontiers (1983)

Not many bands could afford to drop a Top 30 hit from their set list, but Journey's decade-long run of chart success leaves them no choice except to relegate successful singles like the yearning "After the Fall" to a spot on the bench. Setlist.fm says "After the Fall" was last performed live during Journey's 2017 Las Vegas residency. While you're waiting for them to bring it back, you can listen for the song during a party scene in Tom Cruise 's Risky Business .

10. "Too Late" From: Evolution (1979)

There's a very personal motivation behind Perry's "Too Late." In the Time3 liner notes, the singer explains he was trying to warn a friend struggling with drug addiction to leave town and get himself straight. "Too Late" was performed frequently on Journey's 1981 tour, but has scarcely been heard since: Journey only played it once in 1996, and once again in 2012.
