Khiri Travel crafts new ecotourism experiences in Sri Lanka

khiri travel logo

Khiri Travel Sri Lanka has created four ecotourism tours in the country for visitors interested in respecting nature, going local and giving back.

From Mirissa on the southern tip of Sri Lanka, guests can sail in a catamaran with a marine biologist to spot blue whales and dolphins. The trip includes swimming, stand-up paddling, and a seafood lunch on board.

In the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka, the Trails of Matale trip lets guests talk to villagers and hike through pepper, cinnamon and coffee plantations before savouring a banana leaf lunch.

In the Kandy hill country, Khiri has created an educational tour of herb gardens in the forest to show how spices such as cinnamon are cultivated. The trip includes a mug of locally grown “wild coffee”, a forest curry lunch and a donation to a reforestation foundation.

Guests can also help with a seagrass restoration project in the Puttalam/Kalpitiya area in the north-west of the country. The experience involves getting muddy and wet in a lagoon planting seagrass, which is an important breeding ground for sea life; followed by a Sri Lankan meal.

Khiri has since January 2021 been offsetting guests’ holiday carbon emissions by charging US$1.50 per person per day. The process is being carried out in cooperation with ClimateCare which helps companies such as Khiri Travel with the technical fulfilment of carbon offsetting.

Since October 7, fully vaccinated tourists can enter Sri Lanka without quarantine, and they only need to present a negative Covid-19 PCR test result taken within 72 hours of embarkation for Colombo.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Our region of expertise, Indochina, encompasses some of the world's poorest nations, where the gap between rich and poor is huge and the threat of destruction of natural resources a real concern. The rapid growth of tourism in Southeast Asia has led to rising environmental concerns including habitat degradation, the over-consumption of resources, and pollution.

Tourism also introduces foreign visitors to traditionally sheltered areas which may threaten the ability of indigenous communities to protect their cultural heritage.

However, tourism done responsibly can be a life-enriching experience for both the traveler and the host community. Furthermore, tourism fights poverty and brings hope. Khiri Travel, like many responsible organizations, believes that, with the right choices, tourism can enhance cultural understanding, respect the environment, and bring economic growth. A friendly smile between visitor and host is also priceless.

We support the Luang Prabang Orphanage School in Northern Laos. At the orphanage, 300 children and over 30 teachers get some relief from the hardship they face on a daily basis.

Conservation The unique culture of local people and the biodiversity of forest and sea are under threat across Southeast Asia (and the world). Conservation of cultural and natural heritage should be a major the pillar s to sustain tourism in our region.

As a responsible operator, Khiri Travel values and respects the unique traditions and customs of indigenous groups. We do our best to help and sustain them. For example, we actively support the Apsara Arts Association in Cambodia. In the program, disadvantaged and orphaned children are taught traditional Khmer music and dance by Apsara teachers, supported, in part, by Khiri Travel.

Khiri Travel is also a member of Wildlife at Risk which aims to protect endangered animals. We encourage tourists to visit the Wildlife at Risk sanctuary near the Cu Chi tunnels in Vietnam.

Environment Climate change and the threat to the environment is a global challenge. We try to minimize the impact of our tours on the environment. We have very strict rules for our guides and groups, such as a "zero litter" policy.

We encourage our clients to support Climate Care in order to offset greenhouse gases by planting trees and in other ways. Where possible, we use recycled materials and promote electronic communications to reduce paper usage. We limit our printed materials. We encourage our clients to use Khiri.com as their primary source of information about our products and services.

Empowerment Across Indochina, Khiri Travel prefers to use accommodations, restaurants and small businesses that train and employ disadvantaged youngsters.

Women need more empowerment. We hire them when we can. Likewise, Khiri Travel employs the physically challenged. Mrs Nok, our blind telephone operator and receptionist in our head office in Bangkok, is one of our very capable team members. Our operational offices in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia are co-owned and managed by locals.

We are currently actively involved in setting up a sustainable tourist project in Sambor Prei Kuk in Cambodia that supports local people and enhances their skills.

Support and input of our clients is of the utmost importance to the overall success of Responsible Travel.

When to Buy Travel Insurance: Timing Your Purchase Perfectly

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

  • Purchase travel insurance when traveling internationally or on long and expensive trips.
  • Buying travel insurance right after booking your trip is best, as some coverage options are time-sensitive.
  • Cancel For Any Reason policies and coverage for pre-existing coverage require early purchase.

Travel insurance protects you against financial losses and medical emergencies while on a trip. You'll want to book travel insurance when going on long, expensive, or international trips. However, the exact timing of your purchase is also important.

Generally, you'll want to buy travel insurance soon after you book your trip to get the maximum coverage out of your policy. Here's what you need to know about travel insurance and when you should buy it.

Though you can insure your trip anytime after booking, the best time to purchase travel insurance is immediately after booking your trip.

For one, unexpected circumstances may arise between when you book your trip and when you leave. If an injury or inclement weather cancels your trip before you have a chance to purchase travel insurance, you may not get a refund. Purchasing travel insurance early reduces the chances of that happening.

Michelle Osborn, owner of boutique travel agency Outta Here Travels , says, "Most travel insurance policies have a time limit of when you can purchase to get the maximum benefits."

It's important to note that you do not have to have every detail of your trip planned before purchasing travel insurance. Most policies are flexible, so you can add details and update your costs in the days leading up to the trip. Don't let some unplanned details in your trip prevent you from purchasing travel insurance.

When you purchase travel quickly after booking, you'll have additional coverage options.

  • Purchase cancel for any reason coverage , which reimburses you for 60% to 75% of your costs if you back out on your travel plans for a reason not usually covered. CFAR policies must be purchased within 15 to 21 days of putting down the first deposit on your trip. You can find our picks for the best CFAR travel insurance here.
  • Guarantee coverage for pre-existing conditions. Many travel insurers won't cover pre-existing conditions unless you purchase coverage within two weeks of booking your trip.
  • Cancel your travel insurance if you're not happy with it. Most plans allow you to cancel your insurance and get a refund — as long as you do so within 15 days and your trip hasn't started.

If you cannot purchase your travel insurance right after booking, you should still qualify for a policy if your trip hasn't been canceled. Most companies allow you to buy insurance until the day of your trip. You just won't have access to CFAR or pre-existing condition coverage.

When to buy annual travel insurance

Annual travel insurance , sometimes referred to as multi-trip insurance, covers you for all your trips over a 12-month period. This type of travel insurance may be a good option if you regularly travel for work or have a handful of trips, particularly international trips, planned for the next 12 months.

"Travel insurance should definitely be purchased anytime you travel out of the United States," Osbon says. "The main reason is most US health insurance policies don't cover treatment internationally."

You may want to buy annual travel insurance just before your first trip begins. Since these plans last 365 days, you can stretch your policy to cover the most travel. However, this may limit your coverage, so tread carefully. For example, you may not be able to get medical coverage for pre-existing conditions.

"In the case of a pre-existing medical condition, you'll need to meet a few requirements to be covered," says Jeff Rolander, director of claims at Faye Travel Insurance . "Faye's travel protection covers pre-existing conditions as long as you purchase your plan within 14 days of your initial trip deposit and are medically able to travel when you purchase your plan."

You should be able to purchase travel insurance any time before the date of your trip. Once the day of your departure rolls around, the window will close. You also can't purchase travel insurance during your trip or after an injury or loss has already happened.

The moral of the story: It's always better to buy sooner rather than later.

"Right when you book your flights or hotel stay is when you should get your trip covered," Rolander says. "The sooner you buy coverage for your trip, the sooner your coverage starts."

When to buy travel insurance frequently asked questions

You should purchase travel insurance within two weeks of booking your trip to receive maximum benefits, especially pre-trip cancellation coverage.

While you can purchase travel insurance up until the day of departure, doing so may limit certain benefits. Additionally, last-minute travel insurance won't cover pre-existing health conditions.

Lengthier and more expensive trips generally call for travel insurance because you have more to lose. Purchasing travel insurance earlier mitigates the potential damage of a cancellation.

Most travel insurance policies allow for modifications or additions within a specific period after purchase, but it's important to check the policy terms.

Purchasing travel insurance early is generally beneficial for comprehensive coverage, but you may see your premiums rise if you make significant changes to your travel plans.

Nearly 71 Million People Expected to Travel over July 4th Week

This year’s extended independence day forecast exceeds pre-pandemic numbers, sets new record.

khiri travel logo

WASHINGTON, DC (June 20, 2024) – AAA projects 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday travel period*. For the first time, AAA looked at the entire July 4 th week, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period is a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4 th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Share of Travelers by Mode pie chart and Number of Travelers by Mode table

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019 when 55.3 million people traveled by car over July 4 th week. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are the cities displaying the highest rental demand during the holiday week. The busiest pick-up days are projected to be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 3.

Gas prices are lower than last year when the national average was $3.53. Pump prices will likely continue going down leading up to Independence Day.  At that point, they will likely level off and remain relatively stable until after Labor Day, similar to last year.  An important caveat is hurricane season – underway now – which could affect gas prices should a storm negatively impact Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers.

The number of air travelers is also expected to set a new record. AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4 th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019. AAA booking data shows domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.

More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This category is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million. Cruising continues its remarkable post-pandemic comeback. This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruise travelers are also finding deals this summer. With new ships coming onto the market – and going for a premium – some cruise lines have been offering targeted discounts to fill older inventory for remaining cabins.

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4 th are between 2pm and 7pm. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8 th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3 rd , as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “R oad trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

For example, Atlanta routes = ET and Los Angeles routes = PT.

  Top Destinations

This July 4 th week, travelers are cooling off in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska – and by the ocean! Seattle, Vancouver, and Anchorage are top destinations because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Beaches in South Florida, Honolulu, Punta Cana, and Barcelona are in high demand. Historical sites in European cities like London, Rome, Dublin, Paris, and Athens are also popular. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Family Road Trip Checklist

With road trips expected to set a new record this July 4 th week, AAA teamed up with Chicco to share safety tips for families with young children.

  • Check car seat fit. Before you hit the road, check your child’s weight and height to ensure they’re in the right seat and mode of use – especially when it comes to transitioning from rear to forward-facing. Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible for better protection of their head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash. If you are unsure which car seat is best for your child, Chicco offers a car seat comparison guide.
  • Double check car seat installation. Even if your car seat is already installed in the car, it’s worth checking everything is safe and secure. An easy at-home way to do this is with the “inch test.” Simply grab the seat at the car seat belt path and pull side to side and front to back. If it moves more than one inch in any direction, uninstall and start over until a secure fit is achieved. For any questions, utilize the car seat manual, QR codes, or online resources like those offered by Chicco.
  • Secure loose items in the car. Take time to organize and clean up your car before hitting the road. Storage organizers that secure to the back of the driver and passenger seats are simple solutions to make sure everything has a spot, especially loose items that can become projectiles in case of a sudden stop.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Pack an emergency kit with first-aid supplies, water, snacks, blankets, jumper cables, and flares. Make sure your phone is fully charged – and keep a charger in the car – to call AAA or request roadside assistance digitally if your battery dies, you lock yourself out, or you need a tow.
  • Map your route. Families with young children should plan for frequent and longer stops along the way. Map out your route ahead of time with AAA TripTik and browse hotels, restaurants, and other activities along the way on AAA Trip Canvas.
  • Bring entertainment. Make sure to place toys and books within reach to keep children entertained. If your kids use tablets or other electronics, make sure the devices are fully charged and pre-downloaded before leaving home. Another fun way to get the whole family excited for the road trip is to create a family playlist of everyone’s favorite songs!

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 27, 2024.

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

*Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. Historically, the Independence Day holiday period included only one weekend. This is the first year the Independence Day holiday travel period is a longer timeframe with two weekends included.

Upgrade your M4 iPad Pro travel carry with these accessories

Avatar for Fernando Silva

As someone who uses their iPad Pro as their main computer, I tend to bring it with me wherever I go. One of my favorite aspects about the iPad is that it is basically a modular device without actually saying it’s modular. Between the pin connectors, Thunderbolt port, the magnets, and its lightweight chassis, this makes it the perfect computer to pair with many accessories. So here are some of my favorite accessories I have been using with my new M4 iPad Pro, specifically centered around travel.

If you want to see a hands-on video of all of these accessories and more, be sure to check out our video below!

Native Apple accessories

I want to mention briefly that I use Apple’s native accessories for the M4 iPad Pro. If you use your iPad as your main computer, like I do, then getting the new Magic Keyboard is a must. It completely changes how you use the iPad by turning it into a laptop-like experience. It is pretty pricey, but it’s the only true way to make the iPad compete with something like a Macbook Air. Secondly, I am using the new Apple Pencil Pro. I am no designer or artist, but I tend to take a lot of notes and work with Affinity Photo. The new updates to the Apple Pencil Pro , like haptics, the squeeze gesture, and Find My support, have been welcome upgrades. But now that we have those out of the way, lets get into the fun part!

Shinjuku Messenger Bag

I am always looking for new backpacks and messenger bags to carry all of my tech goodies. This new Shinjuku Messenger by Waterfield checks off many boxes for people looking for a high-quality leather bag that’s lightweight and has the perfect amount of storage for a work commute or a quick work weekend. The combination of full-grain leather on the outer flap and their new X-Pac canvas material makes for a nice, well-rounded package.

  • The compact is made for the 11in iPad Pro and smaller devices
  • Full is made for the 13in iPad Pro and also fits the 13in Macbook air and other similar-sized devices
  • It comes in three colors: Brown Waxed Canvas, Storm Grey and Black
  • Dedicated compartment for iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard
  • Larger, more open area for larger items
  • Internal water bottle holder
  • Exterior zipper on flap for quick access to items

khiri travel logo

Overall, I think this is a great option for someone who isn’t looking for a large backpack but more of a slick and minimal messenger bag look. You can also fit much more than I thought you could fit in the bag itself. The compact size is $229 and the full size is $239, which is very competitive pricing when considering the build quality and materials.

Woolnut Leather Folio Case

The M4 iPad Pro is not a cheap package, especially when considering the additional Apple accessories. I spent around $1800 on my 1TB iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro. So, the first thing I did was to make sure I had a safe way to store my iPad while still being able to bring it with me. The new Leather folio by Woolnut was perfect. This is essentially a perfectly sized leather sleeve that fits your M4 iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro. The outside is made of full-grain leather, which smells fantastic, and the inside is made of this extremely soft and satisfying wool felt. So, it will still be protected even if you place your iPad in the sleeve without the keyboard.

  • It comes in 3 leather colors: Black, Cognac & Green
  • It comes in 3 Matte PU material colors: Black, Blue & Green
  • Room for Magic Keyboard & Apple Pencil
  • Zipper protection avoids scratches
  • Dedicated Apple Pencil holder

khiri travel logo

Woolnut does offer these in two different material finishes, in leather and in this matte PU material as well. Both are functionally identical, so if you want to save some money, the matte PU version is on sale for under $60, while the full-grain leather version is $160.

ProtoArc USB- C Hub Mouse

I love it when a product can serve multiple functions. This mouse by ProtoArc does just that. On the surface, it looks like a normal lightweight and portable mouse. It has all your normal functions, like connecting to 3 different devices, a scroll wheel, an extra shortcut button, and charging via USB-C. But the mouse actually houses a mini USB-C hub! If you look at the rear of the mouse, you can actually pull out a 3 in 1 USB-C hub, which is perfect for those on-the-go situations. It has:

  • HDMI 2.0 port
  • USB-A 3.0 port (up to 5GBps)
  • USB-C power passthrough port with 60W support

Of course there are USB-C hubs out there with many more ports and with faster data and power speeds, but for something small compact that is just part of another product, I love this thing. Not only that but it’s only $50 (sometimes on sale for $40). This has been one of my favorite recommendations for anyone looking for a portable mouse.

5 in 1 Magic Power Bank

In the same light as the ProtoArc mouse, I wanted to find a charger that did more than just plug into a wall and charge my iPad. Raycon, yes, the headphone company recently released a slew of power-related products, and they are actually great! I recommend checking them out but we are going to focus on their 5 in 1 charger.

So, how is this a 5 in 1 charger? Firstly, it looks and acts as a typical wall charger. It connects to any AC outlet and has a USB-C and USB-A port that outputs 20W. Charges of this size typically can charge at higher wattage, but since this is only for an iPad, the 20W is more than enough, especially considering everything else. Not only does it charge your plugged-in devices, but it also houses a 10,000mAh battery that is constantly charging itself when it’s plugged into the wall. It doesn’t stop there; then it has two short built-in cables, a USB-C cable, and a lightning cable to charge your devices on the go. It also has a Magsafe puck on its side that supports up to 15W of charging. Then the last two things to mention are that it has a small kickstand for your phone and an LED screen that gives you the battery percentage of the power bank.

This is the perfect travel charger for iPads and iPhones. My only gripe is the output. It only charges at 20W, so I wouldn’t consider this a solution for a MacBook.

Other accessories

As I mentioned above, be sure to check out our video here to see the rest of the accessories in my pack. I bring up products like the Sonos Ace, a Magsafe battery bank a cleaning kit and more! Let me know what you think of these accessories. What type of accessories do you use with your iPad? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
