The PERFECT 1, 2 or 3 Week Australia Itinerary [2024]
- Last Updated: January 30, 2024
Whether you have 1, 2, or 3 weeks in Australia, here are some suggestions for an Australia itinerary that will help you make the most of this huge, diverse, and stunning country!
Planning a trip to Australia can be quite difficult, simply because the country is so huge.
Lots of its best attractions, cities, and natural landmarks are very spread out, so it’s impossible to see everything in a short amount of time.
Australia is also an expensive country to visit, so most backpackers and average travellers won’t be able to visit every single point of interest without spending a lot.
Despite these challenges, planning an epic trip to Australia is definitely possible.
You just have to be smart about your Australia itinerary, sticking to one or two major areas and picking travel routes that are logical.
For example, you won’t be able to fit Sydney, the Great Barrier Reef, Melbourne, Uluru, Tasmania, and beaches and national parks of Western Australia and the Northern Territory into a 1 week Australia itinerary.
To see all those incredible places, you’d need at least one month, and even then you’d be rushing to get everywhere.
What you can do, is pick the areas that appeal to you the most and plan your trip accordingly.
READ MORE: Check out our comprehensive guide with everything you need to know about travelling in Australia !
So you’d be better off picking either the east coast or the west coast and hanging around there if you only have 1 or 2 weeks in Australia.
In this article, I’ll provide a few sample Australia travel itineraries.
Each Australia itinerary will include a few of the country’s best places to visit, while maintaining reasonable travel times.
Whether it’s your first trip to Australia or you’ve been here for a while, there is always something incredible to see!
Table of Contents
How to Get Around Australia
Days 1-2: sydney, days 3-5: brisbane , days 6-7: airlie beach and the whitsundays, days 1-3: sydney, days 3-6: melbourne , day 7-8: the great ocean road, day 9-10: adelaide, day 11: kangaroo island, day 12-14: perth, days 3-4: byron bay, days 5-6: the gold coast, days 7-8: cairns, days 9-10: port douglas and the great barrier reef, days 11-13: cape tribulation and the daintree rainforest, day 14: darwin, days 15-17: kakadu national park, days 18-20: uluru and the red centre, the ultimate australia itinerary travel guide.
Having travelled all around the country, we’re excited to share these epic 1, 2 and 3 week Australian itineraries that’ll cover the best places around.
But first, a tip…
It’s also important to consider how you’ll get around Australia during your visit.
As I mentioned, the country is huge and public transport like buses or trains is expensive.
If you’re staying in one area, it’s worth renting a car for a few days so you can explore and do day trips, but driving from one city to the next may take 12+ hours of driving.
The best way to get around is to rent a car and explore on your own! We recommend Rental Cars , which has the largest range of vehicles for the best value on the market.
Catching cheap domestic flights is the best way to jump from one state to the next, and you can take public transport or drive within smaller areas.
Though every traveller will have their own unique preferences and modify these itineraries as necessary, here are some sample Australia itineraries that will hopefully help you plan your dream trip!

You’ll begin in Sydney, then head up to Queensland to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef.

After arriving in Sydney and getting settled, you have two days to enjoy the city.
You can spend one day visiting all the popular tourist attractions, like the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Tower Eye, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and maybe some of the museums.
Another day can be spent swimming and sunbathing on one of the city’s main beaches.
The northern beaches around Manly, or the western beaches around Bondi and Bronte are great options for a fun day in Sydney.
Bondi Beach has a very strong health and fitness scene, so they have lots of incredible healthy cafes where all the locals like to fuel up.
Visit Berri Bar Bondi Beach for a refreshing Acai bowl, Porch and Parlour for a healthy breakfast on homemade bread, or Umu for some nourishing organic lunch bowls.
After 2 days in Sydney, you can catch a quick, 1-hour flight up to Brisbane.
Check out this post on how to spend one day in Sydney if that’s all the time you have.

Brisbane is another incredible city to visit in Australia.
After 2 days in Sydney, however, you may be sick of the crowded city streets.
Luckily, Brisbane makes a great gateway for exploring more peaceful areas of Queensland.
There are tons of amazing day trips from Brisbane that allow you to explore nature and see more of Australia, including:
- Burleigh Heads: a charming coastal town with a massive beach and national park
- Hervey Bay: one of the best spots in Australia for whale-watching
- Lamington National Park: full of hiking trails and waterfalls
- Stradbroke Island: a beautiful location that’s great for kayaking, paddleboarding, and trying other water sports
- Fraser Island: the world’s largest sand island
After exploring Brisbane and the surrounding areas, catch another cheap domestic flight from the city up to Airlie Beach.
Read our list of the best things to do in Brisbane for more inspiration!
![travel plan for australia visa Brisbane Sign](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Brisbane.jpg)
Airlie Beach is known as one of Australia’s most stunning beaches, complete with soft white sand and clear turquoise water.
From here, you can soak in the postcard-worthy views in the Whitsundays Islands and do a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef and the famous Whitehaven Beach.
Book an ocean rafting day tour that include all your snorkelling gear and takes you to Whitehaven Beach and the best locations in the Whitsundays.
BONUS – Booking ahead of time ensures you won’t miss out on the tour, and get the best price too! And just for NOMADasaurus readers, if you use the Klook discount code “NOMADS10” on the website when checking out, you’ll get $10 off your first booking!
Snorkelling, scuba diving, and sailing through the Great Barrier Reef will make an unforgettable ending to your 7 day Australia itinerary.
At the end of your week in Australia, you can fly from Airlie Beach back to Sydney for your departing flight.

2 Week Australia Itinerary
Two weeks in Australia allows you a bit more time to see different areas of the country.
This two week Australia itinerary will start in Sydney, move down to Victoria to explore Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road , and will then curve up to Adelaide in South Australia and end in Perth in Western Australia.
So with two weeks in Australia, you can still manage to visit 4 states! If you’d prefer to spend more time in one place rather than jumping around so much, you can always modify this.
For example, you could skip Perth and spend a few more days exploring New South Wales, Victoria, or South Australia.
But here is a sample two weeks in Australia itinerary.
![travel plan for australia visa Opera House](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Alesha-North-Sydney-Opera-House-1024x728-1.jpg)
Once again, you’ll fly into Sydney and begin your Australian adventure in the capital city of New South Wales.
In addition to all the touristy stuff like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House and touring a local art gallery, you could spend one of your days in the lush nature surrounding the city.
Two perfect day trips from Sydney are:
The Blue Mountains: Full of waterfalls, scenic lookouts and hiking trails, connected to Sydney by train so you don’t even need a car. Here’s what you should do there .
The Royal National Park: Dramatic coastal scenery with rugged cliffs and secluded beaches. Check out these awesome Royal National Park walks .
After 3 days in Sydney, hop on a plane for a 1-hour flight down to Melbourne.
![travel plan for australia visa Wattamolla-Falls-Royal-National-Park](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Wattamolla-Falls-Royal-National-Park.jpg)
As one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in Australia, Melbourne is a favourite among travellers and locals alike.
Spend your days in Melbourne visiting street markets, sipping cocktails from rooftop bars, checking out all the cool cafes and restaurants, and experiencing the wild nightlife.
You can also visit St. Kilda Beach in the south of Melbourne, or head to Brighton Beach to photograph the colourful Brighton Bathing Boxes.
Or take a day trip to Phillip Island or tour the Melbourne Cricket Ground .
After you visit Melbourne, continue on to the famous Great Ocean Road.
![travel plan for australia visa Melbourne Skyscape And Trees](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Melbourne.jpg)
One of the highlights of Victoria is the natural wonders of the Great Ocean Road.
This coastal road runs for 243 kilometers in total and is full of Australian wildlife, quaint little towns, surfing spots, picturesque viewpoints, campgrounds, and overall gorgeous scenery.
Be sure to see the Twelve Apostles, Split Point Lighthouse, Port Campbell National Park, Apollo Bay, Loch Ard Gorge, and other stunning landscapes along the way.
You can either rent a car from Melbourne and drive the road on your own, or book a day tour .
It only takes one day to see all the best spots along the road, but you’ll need to save some time to make your way back to Melbourne and you don’t want to rush.
You can also stop by the Australian National Surfing Museum in Torquay at the start of the Great Ocean Road.
Fly from Melbourne to Adelaide.
![travel plan for australia visa 12 Apostles](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/12-Apostles.jpg)
Spend the next days of your two weeks in Australia itinerary soaking in the culture of Adelaide .
Enjoy the delicious food, the museums and galleries, and the laid-back charm of South Australia’s capital.
One of your 2 days in Adelaide should definitely be spent touring a vineyard and wine tasting in the Barossa Valley.
Again, you can either rent a car in the city and drive yourself around the vineyards (make sure you don’t drink too much!), or you can book a day trip.
![travel plan for australia visa Adelaide University](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Adelaide-University.jpg)
As one of the most unique places in South Australia, Kangaroo Island makes a super fun day trip from Adelaide.
Take photos of the interesting rock formations in Flinders Chase National Park , stroll along the pristine golden beaches, or search for some local animals like wallabies, koalas, and of course, kangaroos.
Head back to Adelaide after Kangaroo Island and hop on another quick flight to Perth to finish up this two week Australia trip.

Your last few days of visiting Australia will be well-spent in Perth, the capital city of Western Australia.
Enjoy the beaches, explore the Fremantle Markets, visit wineries and wildlife parks, and more.
You could also treat yourself to one last epic adventure in Australia by taking a day trip to Rottnest Island .
This island is full of fun activities, natural wonders, beautiful views, and cute little quokkas, which are small, native Australian marsupials similar to wallabies.
After a few days in Perth, either catch your departing flight from here or fly back to Sydney if your flight leaves from there.
You could also consider a day trip to Margaret River , one of the top wine and surfing regions in Western Australia.
It’s a 3 hour drive from Perth to Margaret River, so only make the trek if you feel like you have time.

3 Week Australia Itinerary
3 weeks in Australia allows you to visit some big cities and tourist spots, but it also allows you to venture out to more remote and isolated areas.
In this 3 week Australia Itinerary, you’ll visit Sydney and Byron Bay at the start.
Then you’ll head up to The Gold Coast, and tropical north Queensland to the Daintree Rainforest.
Continue your journey up north by travelling to Darwin and Kakadu National Park, and then venture inland to Uluru (Ayer’s Rock).
![travel plan for australia visa Koala Australia](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/koala-Australia.jpg)
Again, spend your first couple days in Australia checking out Sydney and maybe doing a day trip to the Blue Mountains of the Hunter Valley Wine Region.
Be sure to visit Sydney Harbour, Darling Harbour, and the famous Bondi Beach during your time in Australia’s largest city.
Then fly to Ballina, a small airport 30 minutes away from Byron Bay.
Check out our Sydney to Brisbane road trip guide if you’d prefer to rent a car and drive up the east coast.
Byron Bay is a hub for backpackers, and it is a very fun place to experience when you visit Australia.
From bar crawls and drum circles on the beach, to night markets and street art, to coastal walks and lovely beaches, a couple days in Byron Bay will feel like bliss.
Even if you aren’t on a strict backpacker budget, Byron Bay has so many great hostels that it’s worth immersing yourself in the backpacker scene.
Some of the best hostels in Byron Bay include Wake Up! Byron Bay and Byron Bay Beach hostel.
Both of these have hundreds of great reviews from travellers cost around $30 per night, which is pretty cheap for Australia.
If you want to meet other cool people and take part in all the fun social activities of Byron Bay, you may want to stay in one of these fun hostels instead of a hotel!
You can choose to hang out in Byron Bay for a few more days, or catch a flight from Ballina to the Gold Coast for a taste of the Sunshine Coast surf vibes.
![travel plan for australia visa Byron Bay Lighthouse](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Byron-Bay-Lighthouse.jpg)
The Gold Coast is one of the best places to learn how surfing when you visit Australia.
You can take a surf lesson from an experienced local and ride the waves, or just relax on the beach, eat some great food, and hit the bars and nightclubs in the evening.
The Gold Coast combines the excitement of the city with the salty air and water sports of a beachside town, so it’s a diverse and fun place to visit.
Fly from the Gold Coast up to Cairns.
![travel plan for australia visa Gold Coast Cityscape](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Gold-Coast-cityscape.jpg)
The next few days of your 3 week Australia Itinerary will take you up along the coast of Tropical North Queensland.
This corner of Australia is hot, humid, and jam-packed with rich jungles, Aboriginal culture, waterfalls and the marine life of the Great Barrier Reef.
Keep in mind that during the rainy season, from October to April, you can’t swim in the ocean here because there may be crocodiles and jellyfish.
Cairns is the gateway to tropical north Queensland.
The real beauty lies outside the city, but spend a couple days adjusting to the heat, partying with the many backpackers, shopping at Rusty’s Fruit Market, and swimming in the big public swimming pool called the Lagoon.
Also check out Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park and the nearby Barron Gorge National Park near Kuranda.
Then you’ll take the local bus up to Port Douglas. You can buy your bus ticket from any tourism agency or from the main bus station, and take the Cairns to Cooktown route.
![travel plan for australia visa Barron Falls Cairns Australia](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Barron-Falls-Cairns.jpg)
Only about an hour north of Cairns is Port Douglas, a small, relaxed town with one backpacker hostel, a few amazing restaurants, and a nice park lined with palm trees for viewing the sunset.
This is one of the best places to book a Great Barrier Reef snorkelling or diving tour because up here, the reef isn’t as crowded as near Cairns. A snorkelling reef trip is one of the most popular Australia tours and shouldn’t be missed!
So spend one of your days in Port Douglas swimming in the crisp, blue waters of the reef and seeing some incredible, colourful marine life.
From here, get back on Cairns to Cooktown bus and continue north up to Cape Tribulation in the Daintree Rainforest.
![travel plan for australia visa Great Barrier Reef](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Great-Barrier-Reef-Queensland-Australia-1024x659-1.jpg)
Located in the midst of the jungle, Cape Tribulation is the perfect place to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature.
There is only one main road running through the town, if you can even call it a town.
Cape Tribulation has a few resorts and hostels, a couple tourism companies and about two shops, and that’s it.
But the powerful presence of the rainforest is more than enough to entertain you for a couple days.
The Daintree is the oldest rainforest in the world, and is one of the true natural wonders of Australia.
Go hiking, ride horses on the beach, book an ATV sightseeing tour, do an exotic fruit tasting at Cape Trib Farm, visit the Daintree Discovery Center, or take a boat cruise on the Daintree River to spot some crocodiles.
Try to avoid visiting Tropical North Queensland in December through February, however. This is the wet season and many roads may be flooded and tours will be closed.
On your third day, take the bus back to Cairns then fly to Darwin.
![travel plan for australia visa Cape Tribulation Daintree Rainforest](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Cape-Tribulation-Beach-Drone.jpg)
Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, and it is a convenient starting point for a trip into Central Australia and Ayers Rock, in the south of the state.
Use this day to walk around and sightsee a bit, relax and unwind, and plan your journey into Kakadu National Park.
Check out our guide for the best things to do in Darwin!
![travel plan for australia visa Darwin Nt Australia](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Darwin-NT-Australia.jpg)
Rent a car in Darwin and spend the next couple days exploring the largest national park in Australia!
You can swim in waterfalls, find ancient Aboriginal rock art, and go hiking through some incredible landscapes.
If you have a van or a tent, you can camp at one of the park’s campgrounds. Otherwise there is a handful of resorts where you can stay overnight in Kakadu.
Most of the accommodation in Kakadu is located in Jabiru, the main town of the park.
You could also book a guided tour to Kakadu as a day trip from Darwin. This is a good option for those who want to take a break from planning and driving. A tour will take you right to the best spots in the park, which is handy because the park is so huge.
After exploring the national park, drive back to Darwin and then fly to Alice Springs at the heart of Australia’s Red Centre.
(Alternatively if you don’t want to keep travelling so much, you could stay in the Northern Territory and explore more natural wonders like Nitmiluk National Park.)
![travel plan for australia visa Kakadu National Park](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Kakadu-National-Park-NT-Australia.jpg)
From Alice Springs in the center of the Northern Territory, it’s time to begin your journey to Uluru!
The Red Centre is the central desert area of Australia, consisting of Alice Springs and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park.
Uluru, or Ayers Rock, is a sacred monolith and it one of the most famous places to see on a trip to Australia.
You have two options for getting to Uluru.
Option 1: Rent a car in Alice Springs and complete the 5-hour drive on your own. Keep in mind it’s also 5 hours to get back, so that’s a 10 hour road trip in total. You should also have your own camping gear and pack enough food and water for the road trip.
Option 2: Book a tour from Alice Springs if you are tired of driving. You can choose a straightforward day trip . It’s a bit pricier to do a guided tour, but it takes away a lot of the effort on your part.
Either way, watching the sunrise and sunset bathe Uluru in soft, natural hues is a sight you’ll never forget, so the journey is worth it.
If you are renting a car and doing your own road trip, consider also heading out to Watarrka National Park and Kings Canyon. This amazing spot is a 3 hour drive from Ayers Rock, which is a short drive for the Outback!
READ MORE: Check out all the incredible things to do in Uluru !
![travel plan for australia visa Uluru Nt Australia](https://www.nomadasaurus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Uluru-NT-AUstralia.jpg)
Your final day of the 3 week Australia itinerary will mostly be spent travelling.
Drive back to Alice Springs, then fly back to Sydney for your flight home.
I just want to add that there are many other natural wonders that I didn’t get to mention!
Australia is massive so it’s hard to fit in so many cool places in a short time.
For example, the north of Western Australia is stunning, but it’s very remote and not convenient to add to a few weeks in Australia.
Few Australians even make it out here on holiday.
But riding a camel on Cable Beach , snorkelling with Whale Sharks in Exmouth , or camping in Cape Range National Park are amazing experiences that you can have if you have the time to venture out there.
Tasmania is also one of the most gorgeous places in Australia. The island is home to some of the best hiking and camping in the country , but it requires lots of prior planning and preparation and gear.
You could also road trip around Australia, taking more time to see all the attractions and not having to rush.
But it would take you months or even years to road trip all of Australia!
Regardless of how much time you spend here, don’t stress about seeing everything!
It’s impossible to see everything, and no matter where you go, you’re sure to have an epic time.

Australia Visitor Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process
Updated: February 7, 2024
Australia Visitor Visa is the only option to visit Australia as a tourist for many nationalities. If you don’t qualify for either the Electronic Travel Authority(ETA) or the eVisitor Visa, then you will need to get a Visitor Visa.
Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.
The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.
Quick summary:
- Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
- Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries
- Duration of stay: Generally, 3 months allowed stay, but up to 6 or 12 in some cases
- Visa fee: Visitors visa fee is 190 AUD
- Processing time: 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% in 21 days.
If you haven’t already, read the Australia Visa Guide to familiarize yourself with Australian tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility and entry procedures at the border.

Visitor visa validity
The Australian Visitor visa is valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years from the date of issue. The validity of the visa depends on your nationality and circumstances. For example, most Indian passport holders get a 3-year valid Australian visa, whereas Phillippine passport holders get a 1-year valid visa. Pakistan nationals get a 6-month validity.
You must visit Australia within the validity of your visa.
Duration of stay
Most Visitor visas granted allow for 3 months of continuous stay in Australia. Depending on circumstances, you might be granted a stay of 6 months or even 12 months.
Allowed number of entries
Most Visitor visas are multiple-entry , but Home Affairs also issues single visas in certain circumstances for certain nationalities.
When to apply
Since the tourist visas are valid for at least 3 months, it’s a good idea to apply well in advance. Most applications get processed in 3 weeks or fewer.
Visa extension
Australia Visitor visa is non-extendable . If you need to extend your stay in Australia , you are allowed to apply for another Visitor Visa (onshore) from within the country.

Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Step-by-Step Guide
Visa application, processing, and getting are quite hustling for many people. But without a visa, you can hardly cross the border of other countries. And if you’re planning to visit Australia, then you can’t skip the visa processing.
Though Australia is pretty strict about visas, it doesn’t mean it is very hard to get an Australian visitor visa . Even I would say the Australian visa processing is much easier than any other country as the whole process takes place online.
So, you can apply from your home. All you need is a phone or computer and a strong internet connection.
If you’re a first-time traveller and you intend to visit Australia as a genuine visitor, you should apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) . Also, if your Australian ETA (601) been refused and asked to apply Subclass 600 instead subclass 601 the follow this article.
Here in this article, I will give you a step-by-step guideline of how to apply for a visitor visa and some DOs and DON’Ts that you should follow if you don’t want your visa to be denied.
WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?
Understanding Australia visitor visa Subclass 600
What is australian visitor visa (subclass 600).
![Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Step-by-Step Guide 1 Australian visitor Visa](https://thesimpletravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Subclass-600.jpg)
An Australian visitor visa (Subclass 600) is a short time visit visa that will allow you to enter Australia for less than three months. This visa allows you to enter and stay in Australia for an allotted amount of time, with you being responsible for abiding by the rules and regulations associated with it.
Visitor visa (Subclass 600) has nearly six streams, but the two main streams are the Tourist stream and the Business stream . The visa validation, cost, and time processing depend on these streams.
Tourist Stream
Travellers looking to visit Australia should apply for a tourist stream visa. This visa is typically used by visitors who are going to Australia for leisure, medical treatment, visiting family or friends, and even completing short-term study or training activities lasting less than 3 months.
Business Stream
The Business Visitor Stream visa is for those travelling to Australia for business-related activities, such as attending a conference, training or seminars. Non-work-related activities such as networking and making sales enquiries are also allowed. It is important to note that this visa does not allow recipients to provide their services in the country while they are here.
Requirements for Australian visitor visa
Here I have listed some required and recommended information and documents that you may need to apply for the Australian visitor visa.
1. Online application form
Applying for a visa to enter, travel and stay in Australia just got simpler. Those looking to apply now can go online to complete the entire process, making it that much faster and more convenient! So, you can apply for your visa at your home without any hustle.
You have to fill up a 19-page application form that you will get after creating an ImmiAccount on the official immigration website of the Australian government. Get more details about the application form in the “how to apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) online” below.
2. A Valid Passport
When applying for an Australian visa, it is necessary to provide a valid passport as part of the application documentation. This is essential for the Australian government to consider and process visa requests. You have to scan your passport and then attach the file with the application form. The scanned copy should be clear and transparent. Otherwise, your visa can be rejected.
3. Recent passport size photos
As you have to provide all information through an online process, you must submit a soft copy of every document, including your photo and passport. You must attach a coloured passport-size photo to the required section of your application form. The photo must be clear and vivid.
4. National identity cards (if Have)
National identity cards are not mandatory for all applicants. But if you have, you must submit it. And if you’re under 18 and you don’t have your national identity card, then you can provide your birth certificate or other documents as evidence of your identity.
5. Proof of financial status
Proof of financial status is crucial for an Australian visitor visa, proving that you have enough funds in your bank account to support your stay and leave in Australia. To prove your financial status and you have enough funds, you need the following documents:
Your bank statement of at least three months period (if you’re carrying your trip expense). Tax Return Your pay slips. Term deposits Audited accounts Credit card statement (if have)
Note: If someone is sponsoring your Australia trip, you may have to apply for a Sponsored family stream visa. Usually, your family member can sponsor your trip under this visa who has Australian citizenship or permanent resident, and your sponsor might be asked to pay a security bond.
6. travel itineries
A travel itinerary is a very important information that you must attach to your application form. In this travel itinerary, you have to include your day-to-day plans like places to visit and things to do during your vacation. And also mention the date, time, and your accommodation. Here is a sample copy of the travel itinerary . You only can submit a pdf copy of your travel itinerary.
Note: Travel itinerary is mandatory ONLY for those you are applying for the Tourist stream .
7. A cover letter
A cover letter is surely optional, but it can help you to get the visa smoothly. Because the whole process of applying and getting the Austria visitor visa would be online, there is no interview where you can explain your travel plans and purpose.
So, it is better to submit a cover letter that will explain your travel reason and travel plans. But of course, your cover letter must support every information that you have already submitted for the visa application.
8. Travel health insurance
Travel health insurance is also optional, like the cover letter, but it helps a lot to get the visa, and at the same time, the insurance is helpful during your stay in Australia. For example, if you have a medical emergency during your stay or your flight has been cancelled, you will get immediate financial support from the insurance company. So, travel insurance is required for your own sake and the visa authority also gets assurance that you can carry any medical emergency if needed.
9. Proof of employment status
With your visa application, you also need to submit evidence of your employment status.
For employee
- NOC or Non-Objection Certificate
- A letter that explains your role in the company
- Income tax document
For Self-Employed or business owners
- Business licence
- A finance sheet that explains profits and losses
For Students
- Students need to show their enrolment certificate of the particular school or university.
- A non-objection letter from the specific school or university.
10. Application Fees
If you’re applying from outside Australia, then the tourist stream will cost you AUD 190.00 . And the cost is also the same for a business stream visa. You can pay the visa fee through your credit card, debit card, UnionPay, PayPal, and BPAY.
11. Additional Information
A Flight itinerary that will show Australia entering and exiting dates. And without buying an actual flight ticket, you can reserve your roundtrip flight which is also refundable in case your visa gets rejected.
An invitation letter from your family or friends if you’re staying with them in Australia. The letter should state your relationship with them, the reason for your trip, and so on.
Provide evidence of your previous travel (if you have). It may help you to get the visa smoothly.
A marriage license (if have) or a divorce certificate (if have).
Any property paper or house paper that you own in your home country.
Note: If any of this information is not in English, you’re highly recommended to translate them into English and then submit them.
Important Notes:
You don’t have to submit all the documents as some are required, and some are recommended. But it is better to submit as many as possible, which will increase the possibility of getting the visa. And remember your passport and photo are mandatory that you can’t skip. As you know, all your files have to be submitted through an online process. So, you have to make them either a jpg, PNG, BMP, or PDF file to submit. And no zip files or encrypted pdf files are acceptable. Don’t make your file size more than 5MB, as larger size files are not acceptable. If you have files that are bigger than 5MB, make sure you reduce the size and then upload them.
How to Apply for an Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Online?
Obtaining a visa to visit Australia is straightforward if you have the right information and documents. A simple guide can help make the process simpler and stress-free. Here I have explained how to apply for an Australian visitor visa in four easy steps. Also, you can watch my video in above.
1. Create an ImmiAccount
Creating an ImmiAccount is the most simple and crucial part of an Australian visitor visa application. Without having the ImmiAccount, you can’t get the application form, and you have to create it from immi.gov.au , which is the official immigration website of the Australian government.
Here you will get two steps to create the account. You need to fill up your family name, phone number, and, most importantly, an active email address at the first step. In comparison, the second step requires setting a password and some questions about you. Click here to create your ImmiAccount .
2. Fill up the application form
After registering for the ImmiAccount, you will receive an email to get access to the account. Now you just have to do the following steps.
First, log in to your account and click the “ New application ” option. Then you have to choose the visa type. If you’re a genuine tourist, select the “ visitor ” option and then “ visitor visa (600) “. Now you have a 19-page application form which you must fill up carefully and correctly. Don’t give any wrong information that may cause your visa denial.
In these three simple steps, you can accomplish your visitor visa application form. And in case you cannot fill up your application form right then, you can always save it and edit it later. Moreover, you don’t have to print the form. Just fill-up the form and submit it. But be sure you have given all the correct information before submitting it.
3. Attach relevant documents
At this point, you have to submit all the required and recommended documents that we have mentioned before. On your application dashboard, you will have an option where you can upload all your files. Make sure you submit as many files as possible and make them less than 5MB before submitting them.
Now it’s time to submit your application form and then receive an Application Receipt via email.
Note: Remember, after submitting your application form, you cannot edit it anymore. So do double check before submitting.
4. Pay the visa fees
Now the last step is payment. The tourist stream visa fee is AUD 190.00 , and you also need to pay it online through a Credit card, debit card, UnionPay, or PayPal.
5. Make an Appointment for Biometrics
After submitting the application, create an account with VFS Global for biometric enrollment. You should have already received an email from Home Affairs regarding this, which includes an attachment stating the requirement to provide personal identifiers (biometrics) for the purposes of Section 40 of the Migration Act 1958 in relation to your Visitor (Tourist) (subclass 600) visa application. Please use your application number to schedule an appointment with VFS.
What is the Processing Time?
No one can predict the visa processing time as it is based on circumstances and the age of application finalisation. My visa processing time took nearly two years because I applied in February 2020 before the COVID-19 outbreak and the border was closed. I have received my visa confirmation email in March 2022.
But don’t be scared! Now the border has reopened for all visitors, and the processing time may take a few weeks. So don’t be so hopeless, just wait patiently as I did.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
Is Australia issuing visitor visa now?
Australia does issue visitor visas, and I have personally traveled to the country using one.
How do I get a tourist visa for Australia?
Follow the step above or to apply for an Australian tourist visa, you will need to complete an online application form, provide supporting documents such as your passport and proof of funds, and pay the application fees.
How long can I stay in Australia on visitor visa?
The length of stay for a visitor visa in Australia can vary depending on the type of visa and individual circumstances. Generally, a visitor visa allows for stays of up to 3, 6, or 12 months. It is important to check the specific details of your visa to determine your maximum length of stay.
How much is a 3-month tourist visa to Australia?
The cost of a 3-month tourist visa to Australia varies depending on the applicant’s country of origin. For example, the fee for a US citizen is AUD $140, while the fee for a citizen of India is AUD $145. It’s important to note that additional fees may apply, such as health assessments or biometrics.
What is the visa validity time?
The visa validation depends on your travel itinerary and your nationality. Australian family visitor visa is generally granted for a period of 12 months. But normally, the Australian border agency will decide entry validity. In most cases it will be 3 months per entry.
Do I need to submit a flight itinerary and proof of accommodation?
It is not compulsory to submit a flight itinerary and proof of accommodation. But if you can manage a roundtrip flight ticket and book a staycation with a refund policy, it is better to submit these documents as they increase the chance of your visa approval. My suggestion is must do submit proof of accommodations including flight reservation.
How early should I apply for an Australian visitor visa?
It also depends on your travel itinerary, but you should apply at least six months before your planned trip. Since there is a huge backlog, submit your application as early as possible.
How much bank balance do I need for the approval of my visa?
It is hard to say any exact number that you need to have in your bank account. Because it depends on many factors like how many days you’re intended to stay in Australia, your accommodation cost, your daily cost, etc. Make sure you have enough funds in your bank account so that you can maintain your stay and leave. With my personal experience, Australia is a very expensive place for many including myself. If you have pre-booked (paid) accommodations and purchased flight tickets, then i think at least A$ 200 per day.
What can be the possible reasons for an application denial?
Your visa can be denied, refused or rejected for many different reasons. But the most primary and possible reasons are the following: If you submit wrong information or unclear information. If you fail to prove that you have no intension to overstay in Australia. If your travel purpose is ambiguous. If you fail to prove that you or your sponsor has enough funds to support your trip. Weak travel history Not enough funds Fake or misleading information Not telling truth about previous visa application refused from other countries, namely from UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand etc.

Having navigated the Australian visa process myself, I can attest to its relative simplicity, especially with the online application system. If you’re considering a visit Down Under, opting for the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) is a wise choice. And if you ever need assistance or guidance along the way, Gold migration lawyers are there to lend a helping hand.
Can I apply Australia visit visa subclass 600 without travel history?. Because I never visit any country.
@Ashrafur Rahman. Of course, you can apply Australian visitor visa sub class 600 without any travel history.
i applied for a tourist visa in April 2023, but they refused. The status is
The applicant claims to be employed with xxxxx Electrical as Site engineer. Documents provided in support of the application include travel details, employment, financial and income documents along with inviter’s documents. In assessing these criteria, I have taken into account the information provided by the applicant in their visa application form and the supporting documents. I find that the information provided is not sufficient to satisfy me of their genuine temporary stay intention, and the applicant has not demonstrated that they have sufficiently strong commitments in India that would be an incentive for them to return to India
now can i re apply for visa
You can re-apply but I think better to get professional guidance. There should be more evidence to return to India.
This was a great and interesting article to read. I have really enjoyed all of this very cool and fun information. Thanks
Hi, I have submitted my application and paid for it, also I have done the biometrics. Status shows further assessment and i want to upload some more documents as well. Can I still upload it?
@Mandy Yes, if you need to upload more documents, you can do so easily via your ImmiAccount. Just log in to your dashboard and follow the directions to attach the relevant documents.
My wife is on work visa in australia and she had applied for tourist visa for me on my behalf but visa got refused due to insufficient document like my income detail. Just wanted to know: 1. If i can apply again from my side and if it is mandatory to mention in the online form regarding my first visa refusal or if it is ok without mentioning. 2. Also just wanted to know the list of mandatory documents required to upload along with the recommended documents.. What if I don’t have recommended documents.. 3. Since my wife is on work visa, can she sponsor me ?if yes, what all documents is required apart from invitation letter from my wife?
Hi Prashant. Your first question answer is you must need to tell them about your previous visa refusal even if it was not for Australia. Also, could you please share a bit more privately? Using our contact us page .
I have applied my Visitor Visa Subclass 600 on Dec 25th 2022 and still the application status is stuck at ”Further Assessment”. I have provided all requested documents = total is 23 docs uploaded to the immi account.
Any idea when I will be able to get the Visa grant letter for my application.
Appreciate your help
@Rahul Jonathan The timing for when you will receive your Australian visa grant letter, or any other related documents is dependent on many factors such as demographics and recent trends in applications. While the processing time may vary, it is advisable to wait for at least the designated processing period before reaching out to the authorities regarding an inquiry on your visa status. Best of luck!
Hi, I can’t seem to find the sample copy of the travel itinerary. Can you pls attach it as the hyperlink doesn’t seem to be working
The sample itinerary was added already. Thank you
My Wife and I is in the midst of processing the ETA to go to Australia. We have been rejected once before so I wonder if it’s still advisable to pursue the same path or go with subclass 600? though the first time we did not have our flights booked.
FYI our intention is so that my wife could attend her exam on 16 December 2022 at Brisbane, additionally, we’ll be visiting our relatives in the same city as well. from your article, you mentioned that an invitation letter from our relatives might further strengthen our application. May I please have a copy or a sample of such letter?
I am sorry to hear that you have been rejected once before. While it is not impossible for you and your wife to be approved again, it is still a challenge.
In your case, I would advise you to pursue ETA visa rather than a subclass 600. This is because the ETA visa does not require an invitation letter from your relative in Australia. However, if you choose the subclass 600 route, then I would suggest that you contact our office so that we can write an invitation letter for you and attach it to your application when we lodge it on your behalf.
What should I put in section where it asked for other travel documents? Will this include my expired passport and used/existing visas from other countries?
Do you have any other passports? Or you are a dual citizen? If not a dual citizen please include all your last 5 years travel histories. If you are Malaysian just use their ETA apps.
Do We Need to Upload Certified/ Notarised copies of New and Old Passport all pages?
Hi, you no need to notarized all passport pages. If you have good travel history on your old and new passport then combine all those pages and upload it together with other documents.
Hi, I am in South Australia on a student visa. My wife sister is a citizen here and she applied visitor visa for my wife on 9th June, 2022, but its still not approved. Could you please let me know why this visa is taking so long? Will my student visa affect their visitor visa?
Some nationality get longer waiting time then others. You are already there legally on a student visa so I don’t think your wife application will have anything with your current student visa.
have your wife got the visa now?
Hello, I have submitted my visitors visa application last June 19,2022 and the status is for further assessment. What does it mean? How woud I know if there’s incorrect upload of the required attachment, do they email me about it? I am just confused because under actions of my immi account it says Attached documents and health assessment. when I click on health assement it says no further examination required. on attached documemts it says further assessment. This is my second application. my first application was in 2019 and took only 10 days to receive the grant notification. Im considering the delay might due to backlogs. Appreciate your feedback
Hello there, health assement not required for tourists. The Department of Home Affairs will make further assessment on your visa application. You will be informed of this in writing by the Department and be given the opportunity to provide additional information or documents as part of this process. I am agree with you that delay might be the reason of huge backlogs. And regarding incorrect uploads, The answer is, you don’t need to upload any more documents as they are already there unless you received any email for additional documents. Please do Re-check all your uploaded documents one more time. Thank you and wish you good luck on your visa application
With regard to submission of documents not in English should I provide both original and translated documents.
Hi there. Submit only translated copy but make sure do the translation from authorized by them. I submitted only translated copy and keep the original with me. Hope this helps
Hi,what is the processing time now for visitors visa subclass 600 now? Rgds
At least 30 days+ depending your location and passport you are holding. Some gets faster than others.
I have uploaded documents ie 78 which is more than the maximum limit of 60. I have uploaded the same document in parts in my 600 Australia sponsor family visa. What should I do know?
Hi, did they asked you to submit anymore documents? If not then just wait or you may just send them an email to ask your status. Family sponsored visa usually gets approved just wait and let me know if you get your visa.
hello i applied for sub 600 tourist visa on 25th may. before the outbreak i receieved a grant but wasnt able to travel. i re- applied and they didnt want visa money because of previous grant. it says i should get visa in 26 or 37 days max is this true. thank you
They are refunding those who are withdraw their application. In your case i didn’t exactly understand what they mean to giving you visa 26 or 37 days. Usually Australian visa Sub class 600 comes one or two years validity.
Hi, can the Australian border force approve a 600 visa?

US citizens can travel to many countries visa-free, but Australia isn't one of them. If you're thinking about traveling to Australia, you'll need to plan ahead and obtain valid travel documentation. Here's what you need to know before traveling to Australia as a US citizen with a US passport.
What Visa Do I Need?
The Australian government makes it easy to determine the visa you need with its Visa Finder website . This website asks three questions, the first of which is about the purpose of your trip (think: vacation, visiting relations, attending an event, doing business and seeking medical treatment, among others):
![travel plan for australia visa](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2020/06/aus-visa-finder-1.png?width=3840)
The next question asks the country of your passport:
![travel plan for australia visa](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2020/06/aus-visa-finder-2.png?width=3840)
And the final question asks how long you'd like to stay in Australia — either less than or more than three months.
![travel plan for australia visa](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2020/06/aus-visa-finder-3.png?width=3840)
Most travelers from the US will likely be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601) — also called an ETA — as I was for my most recent month-long trip.
![travel plan for australia visa](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2020/06/aus-visa-finder-results.png?width=3840)
This is because an ETA is available to US citizens visiting Australia for three months for reasons that fit into the following categories:
- Holiday or vacation
- Visit to see friends or family
- Select business activities such as general business or employment inquiries; investigate, negotiate, sign or review a business contract; or attend a conference, trade fair or seminar
Since most US citizens traveling to Australia will be traveling for one of these reasons (and, as a result, are eligible to apply for an ETA) I'll focus on ETAs available to US citizens with a US passport.
What Are the Requirements?
To apply for an ETA, you must:
- Have a valid passport from an eligible country (including the US).
- Apply while outside Australia.
- Wish to stay no longer than three months at a time (you must not study for more than three months, for example).
- Be free from tuberculosis.
- Not have any criminal convictions for which you have been sentenced for a total combined period of 12 months or more, whether or not you served the sentence(s).
- Have paid back any debt — of either yourself or your family — or arranged to pay back any debt to the Australian government.
How Much Does It Cost to Apply Online?
The ETA is free, but there is an online application service charge of 20 Australian dollars (about $14) per applicant. As US passport holders -- along with seven other nationalities -- must apply online, there's no escaping the online application service charge. The fees for my recent ETA applications coded as "Bills and Utilities" on my Chase Sapphire Reserve statement, so don't expect the fee to code as "Travel."
![travel plan for australia visa](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2020/06/aus-visa-csr-bills-utilities.png?width=3840)
How Long Does It Take?
The Australian government says "processing time for this visa is not available" and that the visa may take longer to process if:
- You don't fill it out correctly
- It takes the Australian government additional time to verify your information
Most ETA applications are approved immediately, and those that need additional processing are usually handled within 24 hours. This being said, the Australian government recommends travelers get an approved ETA before booking any nonrefundable travel. Once an ETA is granted, it is valid for one year and allows multiple entries up to three months each.
How Do I Apply?
The online ETA application takes about five minutes to complete. To start an application, click "Apply for an ETA."
![travel plan for australia visa](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2020/06/aus-eta-apply-1.png?width=3840)
Step 1 : Select whether you need a Tourist ETA or a Business Visitor ETA, and certify that you are currently located outside Australia.
Step 2 : Enter your personal details, whether you have an alias, answer a question about your criminal record and enter your passport information.
Step 3 : Enter your address, phone number and email. Select whether you wish to receive communications by SMS and declare whether you hold any passports issued by other countries.
Step 4 : Confirm your information.
Step 5 : Pay the online service charge of 20 Australian dollars (about $14) using a credit card.
How Do I Check My Status?
Once you have submitted an online ETA application, you'll receive a response. The response may:
- Notify you that your ETA has been granted.
- Advise you that your application has been referred for further assessment. You can then check the status of your application after 12 hours by logging back into the ETA system and selecting the option "Check an ETA."
- Advise you to contact the nearest Australian visa office to make a new application.
My response came immediately in an email titled, "ETA Application for Australia [CLIENT-IN-CONFIDENCE] (PROD)" that confirmed my application had "been successful," my payment had been received, that I was now the proud holder of a "valid ETA for Australia" and that my ETA had been linked to my passport, so no additional documents would be required during the travel process.
![travel plan for australia visa](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2020/06/aus-visa-email-approved.png?width=3840)
What Do I Need to Print Before Travel?
Nothing. When your ETA is linked to your passport, it becomes available to both airline representatives as well as Australian immigration authorities. So, there's no need to print your confirmation once your ETA has been granted.
Other Questions
If you have other questions about ETAs, or other types of Australian visas, take a look at the Australian government's Visa Finder website . Questions such as how to combine multiple visa types if the purpose of your trip changes and what to do if you get a new passport are covered on the website.

Don't let a forgotten tourist visa ruin your Australian getaway © xavierarnau/Getty Images
Planning a trip to Australia ? Whether you’re heading Down Under for a short break or extended working holiday, you’ll likely need a visa.
Here’s your complete guide to filling out your paperwork for a visit to Australia.
Do I need a visa for Australia?
Most visitors to Australia will need a visa, but the type of visa you apply for depends on your country of origin, how long you plan to stay in Australia and what you plan to do while you’re there.
Most tourists must apply for either an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or a visitor visa before traveling. The exception is New Zealand passport holders, who are issued a Special Category visa upon arrival.
Your passport must be valid for the duration of your intended stay. You’ll also need to ensure you have sufficient funds to cover your stay. Depending on your visa category, you may be asked for proof of this upon arrival.
What type of visa do I need to travel to Australia?
The Australian Department of Home Affairs’ (DoHA) visa finder can help you determine what visas you’re eligible for based on your citizenship, your travel purpose and your intended length of stay.
Here are the three main tourist visa categories:
For visitors from visa-exempt countries: ETA (subclass 601)
If you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country – including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada or Singapore – you’re eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) . With an ETA you can visit Australia as many times as you like for tourism purposes within a one-year window, staying for up to three months per visit.
Attached digitally to your passport number, an ETA allows for a simplified entry process into Australia. An application needs to be completed via the dedicated ETA app before you arrive and usually is processed within a day. However, it’s recommended that you apply for it a few days in advance to ensure you have the ETA in time for your departure.
While ETAs are free, there is an application service charge of $20.
If you’re already in Australia and you want to extend your stay, you will need to apply for a Visitor visa.
For visitors from European countries: eVisitor visa (subclass 651)
The eVisitor visa is free and available for passport holders from most European countries. It offers similar conditions to an ETA: Visitors can stay for up to three months for tourism purposes. It’s valid for 12 months, with multiple entries permitted.
You can apply for the eVisitor online. Processing time is usually within a day, but it’s recommended that you apply well in advance of your intended travel date in case of delays. This visa can’t be extended, so if you wish to stay longer, you’ll need to apply for a Visitor visa.
If you hold a passport from a country that’s eligible for both an ETA and an eVisitor visa, you’ll find the two options are nearly identical. The main difference is how you apply for them: ETAs must be applied for through an app with a fee of $20. There is no charge for eVisitor visas, but you’ll need to register for an ImmiAccount and apply online through a web browser.
For all other tourists: Visitor visa (subclass 600)
If you’re not eligible for an ETA or an eVisa and plan to visit Australia for tourism-related purposes, you’ll need to apply for a Visitor visa from outside Australia. This visa may be granted for up to 12 months and may be single or multiple entry. Conditions are determined on a case-by-case basis. A visitor visa starts at $190, but there may be other associated costs including health examinations, police clearances or biometrics, depending on your passport.
Although most visitor visas are processed within a few weeks, it can take longer in peak periods, so it must be applied for well in advance of your trip. Standard processing times change regularly and can be monitored on the DoHA site.
Once you apply, you can track your application through your ImmiAccount. You may be required to submit additional information, so check your application regularly to provide any further details to keep the process moving.
How do I extend my visa to Australia?
Enjoying your stay in Australia and don't want to leave? We don’t blame you.
Depending on your visa, you may be able to apply for a new visa to stay in the country longer. Visitors who are already inside Australia and wish to stay longer as tourists may use the onshore Visitor visa (also subclass 600) to extend their stay.
Make sure you apply for your new visa before your current visa expires. If you’ve submitted your application before your current visa expires, you’ll be granted a free bridging visa until your new one is processed.
What if I want to work and travel around Australia?
Working holidays are a popular option for travelers who want to fund their adventures and immerse themselves in Australian life and culture.
Australia’s Working Holiday Maker program is available for visitors between the ages of 18 and 30 (and up to 35 in some cases) from 40 participating countries and jurisdictions around the world.
There are two classes of visas available under this program: t he Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) and the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) . Which one you apply for depends on the passport you hold. Both are valid for 12 months and cost $635, and both enable you to legally work while in Australia.
Many working holiday visa makers find that one year isn’t enough. Fortunately, you may be able to extend your working holiday visa for a second or even a third year. In order to do so, you’ll need to complete “specified work” in a “regional area” for a period of three months (for a second year) or six months (for a third year) first.
This specified work is usually referred to as “farm work” in backpacker circles, but it’s a bit of a misnomer. It’s a common misconception that you need to head to the woop-woops (that Aussie for “middle of nowhere”) and pick fruit to complete your specified work. In fact, there are a range of approved industries the program , including tourism and hospitality, construction and bushfire recovery. Likewise, “regional areas” aren’t just found in remote rural areas; some major cities (including Darwin and Adelaide) are eligible post codes. So while you might find yourself harvesting bananas in a tiny town in tropical Queensland, you could just as easily find yourself serving tables at a luxury lodge in Darwin or working in a winery in the Barossa.
For more information on the working holiday visa program, you can also visit Tourism Australia’s dedicated portal.

Getting an Australian Tourist Visa is now easier than before. You no longer need to visit the Australian Embassy in Mania to secure a visa. The process is now 100% online so you can apply for your Australian Tourist Visa from the comfort of your home. This is good news for Filipino travelers who live outside Metro Manila like Cebu , Iloilo, and Davao . It’s always important to know the Australian visa policy to know what visa types fit your need.

The process of securing an Australian Tourist Visa is pretty much straightforward. I applied at 1 AM after a coffee session with friends and finished the whole process around 3 AM. Yeah, I just basically realized one day that I wanted to go to Australia and see the Sydney Opera House . Hahaha. [Read: SYDNEY TRAVEL GUIDE ]
Since my Australian Tourist Visa application wasn’t planned, I just had to make use of what was available to me. Luckily, I had a recent photo that passed the specification set by the Australian Immigration Authority so I decided to move forward. [Read: MELBOURNE TRAVEL GUIDE ]
Australian Tourist Visa Requirements (Online Application)
Before applying for a visa online, it’s best to prepare all the requirements. Make sure you all have the requirements so your application process will be smooth. If you have a scanner then it’s much better as you need to do a lot of scanning of documents to do.
- Scan your passport’s photo page. If you have just recently renewed your passport and all your visas and stamps are in the expired passport, make sure you also scan the photo page of your old passport and label it as an expired passport.
- Passport-sized photograph in plain light (or white) background. At the back of the photo, write this declaration: “This is a true photograph of your FIRST and LAST NAME ” then your signature.
- Scan both sides of the photo (front and back)
Evidence of Financial Capacity and Assets
- Bank Statement – if you have an online banking account, you can save or print it as pdf from there or you can screenshot and save it. Make sure you save it as it is and no edits as it can be traced if the image was edited. For passbook accounts, scan it.
- Bank Certificate – if you can get one from your bank then it is much better. As mentioned above, I did not plan to lodge my visa application so I don’t have this. Again, better if you have one.
- Credit Card Statement – I submitted the latest statement. Could be better if you submit at least 3 months to show your transactions.
- Pay Slips – If you are an employee, submit a payslip for the last 3 months
- ITR or tax document – I didn’t have it with me so I wasn’t able to submit my ITR. I submitted an explanation letter and attached my certificate of earnings from Upwork.
- Certificate of Earnings if you are an Upworker. Also sent a screenshot of my active contracts as a supporting document.
- I also attached my Memorial Lot Ownership/Title. Hahaha
Travel History
- Scan all pages of your passport with visas, entry, and exit stamps and amendments.
Evidence of Work Experience
Certificate of Employment – if currently employed Employer Leave Approval Business Registration – if applicable
- Evidence of contracts with clients for freelancers. Again, I submitted a screenshot of my work contracts in Upwork.
Evidence of Birth or Age
- NSO Birth Certificate
Evidence of Planned Tourism Activities
- Day-to-day itinerary of your planned visit which includes the places you will visit and activities you will do.
Other Supporting Documents
- Cover Letter – explaining the purpose of your travel. I did not submit this since I already mentioned my purpose in my explanation letter.
Visa Fee (AUD140) roughly around Php5,500
- Credit card, debit card, PayPal, and UnionPay are accepted.
Other required documents that may apply to you
- Letter of invitation from sponsor (friend or family)
- Identification Documents of Sponsor
- Evidence that your sponsor in Australia can financially support your trip.
- Marriage Certificate.
After gathering all the requirements above, you’re now ready to proceed with the online visa application process.

Step 2: Accomplish the Application Form

Step 4: Pay your Visa Fee
Online visa applications, can only be paid using a credit or debit card. It is AUD140 plus a minimal surcharge fee. After payment, you will get an email that your application has been received.
Processing Time
There is no standard processing time. Some of my friends got their visas after 3-5 business days. I was kinda worried that my visa application would be rejected since it took a while, unlike my friends’ application. Fortunately, it was granted. I got my visa after 20 business days. It was a long wait but at least I got a one-year multiple-entry visa.
Validity of the Visa
I applied for a single entry visa with a 10 days itinerary but I was given a one-year multiple entry visa.
