Yehliu Geopark

Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen, Shifen Day Tour via Klook

I booked a lot of stuff from Klook for our recent Taiwan trip. Our Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen, and Shifen Day Tour was one of them. We had to be at the Taipei Main Station by 7:45am because our tour bus was leaving at 8am. A nice, spacious, and air-conditioned luxury bus was waiting for us at the East Gate 3. We were also each given bottled water as soon as we were seated. Our tour guide was a pleasant and accommodating English-speaking woman named Kelly.

Yehliu Geopark

The Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen, and Shifen Day Tour is surprisingly affordable at around ₱1,700+ per head. You have to pay separately for the Yehliu Geopark Entrance Fee and the Sky Lantern activity at Shifen. Food and drinks you consume on tour is also at your own expense. I think it’s a pretty fair deal. This tour is actually quite similar to the Klook Mt. Fuji Classic Route Tour we availed of in Japan in terms of pace and organization, the main difference being our Taiwanese tour guide was fluent in English.

Should you avail of this tour, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • It entails A LOT of walking. Wear comfortable shoes. My 80+ and 70+ year old parents-in-law was able to handle it but then they are exceptionally slim, healthy people with no maintenance meds. That said, I do not recommend this for groups with toddlers, babies on strollers, and handicapped people on wheelchairs.
  • Rainy weather will ruin this tour because Yehliu Geopark’s terrain won’t be as easy to navigate. Sky Lanterns also rely on fire to fly so of course if it’s rainy it might not be a doable activity. Shifen Waterfall Park is also completely outdoors so it will be hard to enjoy if it’s rainy. Check the weather report before you book this tour.
  • Bring cash because there will be a lot of unique food, drinks, and souvenirs which you will try at your own expense.
  • Travel light. Don’t bring a heavy bag because it will weigh you down and leaving it in the bus will not be an option. You change buses to go up the mountains. All I brought was my cellphone and that red bag slung across me in my photo above.
  • Since I checked the weather report I knew it was going to be sunny and warm, I told everyone in our group to ditch their jackets at the hotel and wear light cool clothes. It’s a different story if you go in autumn or winter.
  • Mind the time. If the tour guide says you have to be back at a specific time, be prompt. There is a schedule being followed. We encountered a couple of tourists who were left behind by their tour group because they were so late.
  • Put on sunscreen because you’ll be under the sun a lot.
  • Try to check if it’s a Taiwanese holiday or a weekend and avoid those days because all the places will crowded with locals.

This day tour is super worth it — it’s not even ₱2k per person! The bus was cool and comfortable, it was a smooth ride all throughout. We would’ve covered more ground in Jiufen had it not been so crowded at Jiufen Old Street but we had little choice as I didn’t know April 1-5 were all Taiwanese holidays.

klook jiufen day tour

Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen and Shifen Day Tour

Started our second day early as we had booked a Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen, Shifen and Golden Waterfall Day Tour via Klook. The tour package cost approx. S$45 per person, which included round-trip coach pick-up and drop-off from/at Taipei Main Station as well as a Mandarin-speaking tour guide.

Book the tour via Klook

For those of you who are interested to book this same tour, you can use my link to sign up for Klook to receive a S$5 promo code.

We had to arrive at the meeting point 10 minutes before departure time. There were several tour guides on site with a few coaches parked by the roadside. Showed my booking to them and found the tour guide who was assigned to my group. We were told to remember the coach plate number as we would be using the same coach throughout the tour.

Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen and Shifen Day Tour

Yehliu Geopark 野柳地质公园

Our first stop of the tour was Yehliu Geopark, a geological park located on the north coast of Taiwan. The park resides on a cape that stretches out 1.7km from the town of Wanli. Yehliu Geopark is home to some of the most unique rock formations in the world, including the iconic ‘Queen’s Head’.

Breathtaking beauty of nature

The dramatic coastal landscape really looked like a form of art in nature. When coupled with the unparalleled view of the East China Sea, everything just seemed to be even more breathtaking.

Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen and Shifen Day Tour

Besides the Queen’s Head, there were also other interesting geological formations like Candle Rock, Ice Cream Rock, Mushroom Rock, Elephant Rock, Pineapple Bun, Honeycomb Rock, BBQ Drumstick and more. It was fun walking around this massive outdoor ‘art gallery’ while trying to guess what each formation resembled.

Statue of a hero

There was a statue of Mr. Lin Tien-chen in commemoration of his heroism and bravery when he sacrificed his life to help a student who was swept out to sea in March 1964.

If you’re visiting during summer time, I suggest that you prepare and bring along sunscreen, sunglasses, caps/umbrellas and bottled water before you go out in the sun at the Yehliu Geopark as there will be no sheltered area to take cover. We were practically baked in the sun, lol.

Yin Yang Sea 阴阳海

Next stop was the unusual Yin Yang Sea—a dual coloured bay just beside the northern coastal road. The blue colour side and the yellow colour side of the bay represented the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang (concept of duality), hence the name. Apparently, this special phenomenon happened because of mining activities in the past.

And behind our backs was what used to be a mining town on the hillside. Now, they are just a bunch of abandoned smelting plants and defunct mining facilities.

klook jiufen day tour

Golden Waterfall 黃金瀑布

The Golden Waterfall is located near Jiufen in Ruifang District, a mere 2-minute drive away from the Yin Yang Sea. This waterfall runs off into the Yin Yang Sea. It’s not a huge waterfall but the colour is what makes it unique. Because of the minerals in the water, the surrounding earth and rocks have turned golden yellow/reddish brown.

Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen and Shifen Day Tour

Jiufen Old Street 九份老街

This was the part of the tour that I was most looking forward to. Had heard so much about Jiufen so I was really excited to be here.

Jiufen is a small mountain town located in the Ruifang District. It is known for its narrow streets, traditional Taiwanese-style houses, and beautiful mountain scenery. Jiufen was once a gold mining town and has a rich history dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

klook jiufen day tour

We had fun exploring this charming town. Lots of shops, eateries and tea houses. There are also a number of cultural and historical attractions in the area, including Shengping Theater and Jiufen Gold Mine Museum. Jiufen is also a good place to try traditional Taiwanese food like the famous Ah Gan Yi Yu Yuan (阿柑姨芋圆) or taro balls dessert, red yeast bak wan (meat dumplings), wheel cakes (车轮饼), peanut ice cream rolls and more.

Oh, and I had the best Brown Sugar Boba Fresh Milk at Xing Fu Tang in Jiufen too! This outlet just does bubble tea better than their other outlets in the city, lol!

It would be perfect if we had extra time at Jiufen as there were so much to explore and eat but time was just too limited. Guess what? We made a second trip back by ourselves! Shall share more in my later post on Jiufen. 😉

Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen and Shifen Day Tour

Shifen Waterfall 十分大瀑布

Shifen Waterfall is a large, picturesque waterfall located in Pingxi District, with a width of more than 40 metres. Looks really incredible. It’s like Taiwan’s version of Niagara Falls as both are horseshoe-shaped.

Felt really therapeutic and relaxing to listen to the sounds of the waterfall. Ahhh.

klook jiufen day tour

Shifen Old Street 十分老街

Finally, our last stop. The highlight of the tour would be the releasing of sky lantern at Shifen Old Street. You can pre-order the lantern through your tour guide at a cheaper price and the moment you reach Shifen Old Street, the lantern will be hung up ready for you to write on. Just amazing to see so many lanterns going up into the sky. Fun!

And I loved these mini sky lanterns that I bought as souvenirs for family and friends. They came with various Chinese greetings/phrases for good luck, career luck, wealth, health, happiness, etc. Very meaningful.

Final thoughts

The duration of the whole tour was about 8.5 hours. I must say, this tour was very well-organised. Really convenient and hassle-free as it saved us time travelling on our own between points of interest so we could sight-see at several places all within one day. Our tour guide, Nana, was really warm and helpful. Really appreciated her candidness in sharing money-saving tips so we don’t fall into unnecessary tourist traps. For those of you who haven’t been to Taipei before, we highly recommend you to book this same tour via Klook. Very reasonably priced. Definitely worth it!

Taiwan may be a small country in Southeast Asia but it has no shortage of amazing sights for travelers to explore and experience! For instance, you will find 3 stunning Northern Taiwan attractions that are not too far away from Taipei: the natural wonders of Yehliu Geopark, the undying charm of Shifen Old Streets, and the historic mountain town of Jiufen. (Jiufen Tour)

The best part? You can explore these destinations in just one day at a very affordable price — thanks to Klook’s  well-packaged day tour from Taipei!

Where to Stay in Taipei?

Come and check out my list of the ‘ Best Hotels in Taipei ‘ which features the top recommended choices for cheap to luxurious accommodation choices.

I had the chance to go through this tour myself and it was one of the most memorable experiences that I did when I was in Taiwan!  This is especially because it has always been my goal to do a Jiufen tour — it’s the so-called famous town that inspired Miyazaki’s famous Japanese animation movie: “ Spirited Away “.

To add, this Jiufen tour surely took the hassle away on transiting from one location to the next; so, it’s really great for those who want the added ease (and also great for those who might be pressed on time whilst exploring Taiwan).

With all that said and done, if you want to get a better idea of how the whole day trip goes, do continue reading below.

Table of Contents

Yehliu, Shifen, & Jiufen Tour

Stop #1: yehliu geopark.

This geopark is located in the Wanli District of New Taipei and it is also called the “Yehliu Promontory” . Basically, it consists of a breathtaking cape that is dotted by a number of unique and strange geological formations — a sight of which tourists in Taiwan would typically want to see with their own eyes.

Stretching at about 1,700 meters into the ocean as a part of the Daliao Miocene Formation, its interesting sea bays are said to have been actually formed due to thousands of years of geological forces that kept pushing the Datun Mountains out of the sea.

Yehliu Geopark

A number of the rock formations that are found here in Yehliu Geopark were given names that aptly correspond to their perceived shape. Some examples of these are  Fairy Shoe, Japanese Geisha , Ice Cream Rock, Elephant Rock, and Princess Head.  Rest assured, in order to explore these formations, there are well-marked and well-made wooden paths and bridges from the start of the cape and up to its end.

NOTE : For a complete list of the unique rock formations in Yehliu Geopark, go here .

However, if there is one rock formation that is regarded as iconic not only in Wanli but for the whole of Taiwan, it would be the “Queen’s Head” ( 女王頭 ).

Truth be told, this is a kind of ‘mushroom rock’ in geological terms; but, it has been given this name because after a top part of the rock fell sometime in the 60s, one side of it started to look like the side face of Queen Elizabeth (and others claim that the other side looks like Nefertiti , the Great Royal Wife of Egyptian Pharaoh: Akhenaten).

It is so far assessed that the age of this rock is about 4,000 years old and nowadays, the geopark gives extreme care in preserving this unique rock, more so that the narrowest part around its “neck” is only about 54 inches now.

Queen's Head

It helps to note that in order to get a picture of the Queen’s head, there would often be a long queue. However, since this tour brings you to this geopark in the early hours of the morning, the line is not as bad.

TOUR STOP DURATION : 70 minutes . If you want to travel to Yehliu Geopark on your own, it’s best to take a bus at KuoKuang Bus Terminal which is right across Taipei Bus Station. From here, ride Bus 1815 and you can pay with your IC card . Readers have mentioned to me that it’s important that you use the underpass when crossing over to the terminal because there will be a fine if you’re caught jaywalking. . From Taipei Main Station’s Taipei West Bus Station (Terminal A). Once there, go to the KuoKuang ( 國光 ) window and purchase a ticket to Yehliu Geopark for only NT$96 ~ one way. (The journey will take about 90 minutes). To purchase an admission ticket to Yehliu beforehand and avoid the queue, book here .

STOP #2: Jiufen Tour

Once a prosperous isolated gold mining town during the Japanese occupation in 1893, Jiufen is now a popular tourist destination that’s famous for its maze of alleyways that are filled with quaint scenes and teahouses. You will not only find picturesque streets and buildings adorned with red lanterns, but also some great spots for viewing the Pacific Ocean! In fact, there are still structures in Jiufen that remain unchanged up to this day, which then helps show the Japanese influences on the island.

Moreover, due to such a wondrous setting in this town, Jiufen has also actually been a great inspiration for several international award-winning movies such as Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘ Spirited Away ‘ and Hou Hsiao-hsien’s ‘ A City of Sadness ‘. Therefore, movie buffs and Studio Ghibli fans must make this a MUST in their Taiwan itinerary !

Jiufen

Jiufen is built on the side of the hills so be prepared for a climb up some steep steps until you reach the main section of  Shuchi (Shuqi) Street’s  cobblestone steps. This street is filled with a wide variety of cafés, historic buildings, restaurants, and shops — but don’t forget the streets that run perpendicular to  Shuchi,  namely:  Jishan Street, Quiche Road, and Qingbian Road .

It’s a very small place so everything can be explored on foot during your Jiufen tour. Some areas of interest are:

  • Shengping Theater.  This a small olden theater near the entrance of Jiufen’s main street section, and a visit here (FREE admission) will take you on a trip back in time as you witness its old-style ticket window, film posters, and snack shop. At regular time intervals, Shengpin Theater also showcases old movies and Taiwanese operas in which visitors are free to watch.
  • Songde Park.  A small memorial park which you can find in the eastern part of Jiufen on Qinbian Road. It’s a great place to relax and you can find some monuments that were built in commemoration of Yen Yun-nian, the person who founded Jiufen’s mining culture.
  • Wufan Tunnel. This is found next to Songde Park and it has been excavated since 1927. But by the early 70s, the Republic of China sealed all mine tunnels in Jiufen to protect residents and visitors. Anyhow, you can still view this tunnel from the outside.

When it comes to food, you will find an array of street shops in Jiufen that sell various types of Taiwanese food and snacks. Some of the things that you should not miss during your Jiufen tour are:  ginger tea, fishball soup, dumplings in sweet bean  and  yuyuan  (taro balls). To list out the places you should watch out for:

  • Jiufen Teahouse. This is the most prominent building that’s often featured in photos of Jiufen. But apart from its beauty, this Jiufen Teahouse was also once a famous meeting place for a lot of Taiwanese writers and artists when it first opened. Once you’re inside, you’ll be rewarded with calm interiors filled with tea paraphernalia, and if you happen to be there on a good day, you can sit back and enjoy Jiufen’s sights on the terrace.
  • Grandma Lai’s Yuyuan. Found at No. 143 in Jishan Street, this place is famous for its taro balls. (Otherwise, there’s Ah Gan Yee and it even gives you great views over the whole of Jiufen).
  • C ity Of Sadness Restaurant.  Found in 35 Shuchi Road (which is just on the corner of Shuqi and Qingbian Roads) this restaurant is famous for being featured in the highly acclaimed film: ‘ A City of Sadness ‘.

Want to spice up your Jiufen tour? Rent a qipao or traditional Chinese outfit for the entire day!

JIUFEN TOUR STOP DURATION : 120 minutes . If you want to do your own Jiufen Tour from Taipei, there are 2 route options: . ~ Go first to Ruifang Station by taking a train heading north from Taipei Main Station (NT$47~ to NT$82~ one way). From Ruifang Station, head to Mingdeng Road (to your left after you exit the station, facing the Wellcome Supermarket). You will then find a bus station named Local Residents Plaza (區民廣場) which is just next to the police station. There are routes 827 and 788 heading to Jiufen (while route 825 operates only on weekends) and it takes only NT$15 to get to Jiufen in 15 minutes. Take note that the bust stop next to the police is the one that heads east to Jiufen, the one across the police station heads west back to Taipei. . To go back to Taipei after doing a Jiufen tour, just take bus 1062 which lands near Raohe Night Market — a great stop to end your night perfectly. . ~ From MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing (either Brown Line or Blue Line), exit from Exit 1 and take bus 1062 (Keelung Bus) that heads to Jinguashi. Stop at Jiufen bus stop. This takes about an hour and costs NT$102.

STOP #3: Shifen Waterfall & Shifen Old Street

Shifen is a quaint village found in the Pingxi area of Taiwan and it is an old railroad town that originally transported coal. Today, however, its Old Streets have become a popular destination for its food, charm, and old train tracks; but also most especially because of its sky lanterns!

Needless to say, there are a number of fun things that you can do on this last stop…

Shifen

Shifen Waterfall.  The tour will first make you stop at this 20-meter tall waterfall found outside of Shifen. It is regarded as the most scenic waterfall in Taiwan and a rainbow even often displays itself as the water splashes into the lake. (If you’re going here by yourself and without the tour, it can be reached in 20 minutes by walking or in just 5 minutes by motorbike since there are rentals near the train tracks of the Old Street costing NT$200 per hour or US$6~).

Explore the Old Streets.  After the waterfall visit, you’ll be led to the heart of Shifen which has a collection of lanes and alleys in and around the railway station area. What’s most interesting of all is that the train track runs straight through the middle of the village — so do take your time in doing photo ops! However, do remain to be mindful because a train line still regularly runs through the tracks (around every hour) ; then again, there’s no cause for excessive worry because the train runs slow and villagers will also usually notify everyone when the train is approaching (apart from the fact that the train’s sound is enough of a signal to let you know that it’s coming).

After you had your fun exploring the town, make sure to stop by one of the shops to release a Chinese sky lantern . This was once used as a signaling object for the railroads, but nowadays, visitors can buy them in different colors and write their wishes on them with a brush before releasing them to the sky.

All of the shops by the train tracks sell it at a standard price of NT$150 (or US$5~) if you want your sky lantern to be in only one color, or NT$200 (or $6.5~) for a 4-colored one. Each of these colors represents different meanings to best portray your wish, may it be for family, love, wealth, etc.

The shop owners usually provide you with a laminated sheet that explains in detail what the various colors would mean. Since it is very cheap, my companion and I chose to get a 4-colored lantern for the both of us and we each had 2 sides to write on. (In fact, 4 people can already share 1 lantern).

TIP : Every year, a Sky Lantern Festival is held in Shifen’s square (next to the Old Street) in which thousands of sky lanterns will light up the sky in either February or March (check this website for official dates). These were originally released to signal safety or to transmit information but on this festival day, much like what visitors do in Shifen on a normal day, the lanterns are decorated with wishes by each of the people attending the event. . This is one of the 3 popular lantern festivals in Taiwan and it has been regarded as a highly recommended activity by big publications like Fordor and CNN Travel.

Shifen Waterfall

Eat. Eat. Eat!  As a marketplace, the Old Street in Shifen is full of restaurants and small stalls selling Taiwanese fare. Since you will have a long stop here during this day tour, you can have your lunch here — OR, you can just feast on a few snacks and get a late lunch/dinner in Jiufen later on. Some of the xiaochi  (snacks) that you must try are  bubble tea, sausages, fried squid, peanut pancake, and Taiwanese sausages  among many others!

Glimpse at Jingan Suspension Bridge. Found near and behind the Shifen Station, this pedestrian bridge connects to the Nanshan villages. If you still have time, other than taking Instagram-worthy photos on the bridge, take the chance to explore the colorful houses in Nanshan.

TOUR STOP DURATION : 50 minutes at the Shifen Waterfall, and 70 minutes at Shifen Old Street . If you want to travel to Shifen on your own from Taipei, from the Taipei Main Station, take a northbound train that heads to Ruifang Station (NT$47~ to NT$82~). Get off there and transfer to the Pingxi Line wherein it’s best to get a One-Day Ticket at just NT$52.

Taiwan Itinerary & DIY Travel Guide: 3 Days or More (Taipei + Day Tours)

Taipei 101 : When the tour ends, you’ll make a brief stop at Taipei 101 which is formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center. This was once called as the world’s tallest building in 2004 — until Burj Khalifa in Dubai was completed in 2010. Either way, nowadays, it holds the highest award as the tallest and largest green building in the world according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) . Towering at 101 stories, the base of the building houses several shops and restaurants (such as the famous Din Tai Fung chain) but what most visitors aim to do is to access the observatory.

ADMISSION: Book online

. Golden Waterfall : For an added fee (see the online booking page for the option) , you can make a stopover to this famous roadside waterfall that flows over rust-colored rocks & soil due to minerals from a former mining area.

Tour Details & Travel Guide

» best time to visit.

Taiwan enjoys 4 seasons, but they’re not as pronounced given that it generally has a humid subtropical climate. The seasons are divided in the following months and it’s best to either visit in late spring or autumn (best in November) if you want more comfortable temperatures. I did this tour in August and it was a tad too warm for me!

  • Spring : pleasant temperature / Average lows at 15ºC to 22ºC and average highs at 19ºC to 27ºC.
  • Summer : hot and humid and sometimes very wet / Average lows at 24ºC to 28ºC and average highs at 27ºC to 31ºC
  • Autumn : cooler temperatures / Average lows at 18ºC to 27ºC and average highs at 27ºC to 30ºC
  • Winter : foggy and somewhat dry / Average lows at 13ºC to 15ºC and average highs at 17ºC to 19ºC
  • WINTER: Dec to Feb
  • SPRING: March to May
  • SUMMER: June to Sept
  • AUTUMN: Oct to Nov

» Tour Details & Price

For only USD$15~ (or Php 750~) — you will get…

  • Transportation (including parking, toll fees, and fuel) with WiFi from Taipei to the 3 attractions, and back
  • To visit Yehliu Geopark, Shifen, and Jiufen
  • An English-speaking professional tour guide

The only things that are not included are personal expenses (souvenirs), sky lantern costs at Shifen  (if you want to set off those lanterns, they’re priced starting at USD$3 or Php 160~ which is already good for 4 people) , Yehliu Geopark admission  (costs only USD$2~ or Php 135~) , and meals.

Rest assured, if you want a tour package that already includes admission (to avoid the queue line) AND lunch, just book those options on the  booking page . If you want to make a stopover to the famous Golden Waterfall, that option is available too at an added cost.

» Meeting Place & Duration

To answer these questions here are some added info about the day tour… Meeting time = 7:45AM Meeting place = GaKuDen Bakery (near exit 4 of Ximen Station) Duration = Approximately 8 hours Return time to Taipei = Approximately 5:30PM Return place = GaKuDen Bakery (near exit 4 of Ximen Station) Vehicle  type = Shuttle bus with Klook logo on it

» Getting in to Taiwan

By air.  My go-to platform for grabbing the best flight deal is  Skyscanner ; it scans through all local and international airlines to give you the best price at any given time!

Taiwan’s main international getaway is Taoyuan International Airport which is 40km southwest of Taipei. It is connected to the center via the Taoyuan Airport MRT and HSR Taoyuan Station (single trip price at no more than NT$160 / USD$5 / Php 260~) . As such, I highly suggest buying a  Taiwan High-Speed Rail Unlimited Pass  which gives you unlimited rides on Taiwan’s THSR train network — including the train to and fro the airport.

There are also buses linking to the airport (you can buy a discounted roundtrip shuttle bus from the Airport to Taipei and vice versa  here ), but if you rather want a taxi, a one-way fare can cost a minimum of NT$900.

If you want utmost convenience and ease, especially without having to lug around your luggage, I suggest booking a  private transfer  to your hotel for only Php 1,000+ (or $23~). This works best if you’re coming together with other people so that you can share the cost and save more!

» Visa for Taiwan

If you’re NOT a citizen of any of Taiwan’s  exempted countries , you are then required to avail of a visa beforehand.

  • Check full visa requirements here as per your nationality.

If you’re from the Philippines, you will be eligible for  visa-free access to Taiwan for 14 days starting this November 1, 2017 . The only requirements you need to show at the immigration are:

  • An ordinary/regular passport with remaining validity of at least 6 months from the date of entry (Diplomatic & official passport holders are not eligible for visa-free treatment).
  • A return ticket or a ticket to your next destination (and a visa for that destination if it is required).
  • No criminal record in Taiwan (the immigration in Taiwan will check this themselves upon your arrival).
  • As applicable, proof of accommodation/ hotel booking , host/sponsor’s contact information, or arrangements of tour, travel, visit, events and meeting, etc.

» Where to Stay (Taiwan Accommodations)

To search for the best hotel accommodation in Taiwan at the best prices, I suggest cross-checking hotel prices between  Agoda  and  Booking.com . But if you’re rather interested in renting comfortable houses or apartments, you should search through AirBnB .

To see a complete list of the top recommended accommodation chances ranging from cheap to luxury places, check out this post of the ‘ Best Hotels in Taipei ‘

» Helpful Taiwanese Hokkien Phrases

About 70% of the population speaks Taiwanese Hokkien, but Mandarin Chinese has been declared as the official language. Rest assured, English is commonly used by the locals and you won’t have a hard time conversing with it especially in places like Taipei.

As you venture outside of the capital though, it will become harder; but, it’s nothing that finger-pointing or Google Translate can’t solve. For a start, here are some sample phrases in Taiwanese Hokkien:

It’s hard to say how difficult it was because “difficult” is relative to everyone’s fitness level and the weather. Still, I’d say it’s a pretty difficult climb. You’re basically taking a staircase with literally hundreds of steps, and some of those steps are about 8-10″ high.I went early morning when it wasn’t too warm but it was still a bit humid. I’m 26 and exercise occasionally, and it was a tough climb but not terrible. I’d say 8/10 difficulty. The view is worth it though!

Just to give an update if your readers would opt to go by themselves to Yehliu Geopark. KuoKuang no longer has a window in the Taipei Bus station and there’s no need to buy a ticket anymore. They would just need to go directly to the KuoKuang Bus Terminal right across the Taipei Bus Station and aboard bus 1815. They would need an IC card to use at the bus and if I remember correctly, the charge is 56 NTD. Note: Please use the underpass when crossing as there will be a fine if you’re caught jaywalking.

Thank you so much for this helpful info! :D I hope you had a fun time visiting those places too.

Yehliu, Shifen, & Jiufen Taiwan Day Tour via KKday

Dea Mariano

Four months ago, we went to Taiwan and shared our itinerary and budget which you can find here . So yes, this is a super late post as we had to prioritize a few blog invites. 😉

Honestly, I’ve already forgotten about writing this until a news reached me about Taiwan’s confirmation for extending the visa-free privilege for Philippine Passport holders until July 2020. Such a great news for everyone!

So now here’s our Northeast coast Taiwan tour.

Yehliu Shifen Jiufen Day Tour

Our meet-up schedule was 8:45 in the morning at Taipei Main Station East Gate 1. We availed this tour from KKday since the sites are far from each other, thus, difficult to DIY. The tour guide, Sir John, was very accommodating and informative. He speaks english really well so we didn’t have to worry about language barrier.

Yehliu Geopark

Our first destination was Yehliu Geopark. We arrived at exactly 10am. We presented our printed Yehliu ticket which we also availed from KKday (you may also avail it here ).

One hour was allotted for this tour, which will be enough only if it’s not crowded. However, there were too many people eventhough it was a working Thursday! In fact, some iconic sites such as the Queen’s Head had a long queue of people just for picture taking!

klook jiufen day tour

We lined up for Queen’s head too since it’s not everyday we get to see such amazing piece. Waiting game took about 20 minutes! And when it was our turn, there was a Chinese woman trying to skip the line. Thankfully, the official who manages the line rebuked her and they started conversing in Chinese which of course I didn’t understand. Then the official let us took our turn. So there was dishonest one, and there was one who does the right thing, same race. You really can’t stereotype.

While the queuing took 20 minutes, the photo-ops did not even last a minute! Stay for few more seconds and you’ll be hated by everyone! *just an exaggeration*

klook jiufen day tour

Jeric found it hard to capture photos because of the crowd. But what’s amazing is that eventhough the place was filled with people, it was still such a beautiful and peculiar site to behold. I never knew I’d be able to witness such place that surprisingly exists. We were literally mind-blown!

These bizarre rock formations were all due to weathering. Yehliu is located in the subtropic zone and every year, the place is being affected by northeast monsoon and wave erosion for over a six-month period, if I recall it correctly.

klook jiufen day tour

We actually lost track of time, we only had less than 2 minutes before the bus departure so we literally ran our way to our bus because walking would take about 5 minutes! The site was quite far from the parking area. When we arrived, the bus was just about to leave and Mr. John was waving at us.

While leaving Yehliu, the ocean view was already on our bus side (left side of the driver). Such a splendid way to end our Yehliu trip! We traversed the road for almost an hour before reaching Shifen Old Street.

Shifen Old Street and Sky Lantern Releasing

We just came from a bizarre site in a coastal area, and now we’re transferred to an old street in an old railroad under a lantern-filled sky. By that time, we were starting to really like this trip.

Sir John led us to a store and let us pick our desired color of lantern. There were many choices and each color has a corresponding meaning like luck in career, marriage, health, etc. It didn’t really matter to us so I just chose orange to match my outfit. HAHA.

klook jiufen day tour

There were also multicolored lanterns, and the more colors, the higher the price. It’s like paying more for higher chance of getting all kinds of luck. Since we’re not really believers of luck, we just opted for the plain one. I just wanted to experience lantern releasing so can we just please proceed? 😅

So the next step was write all your wishes on the lantern. But we really don’t do wishes so I just wrote my thoughts, and Jeric wrote our Lord’s name in Chinese characters.

klook jiufen day tour

After we finished writing on our lantern, the vendor helped us light up our lantern and instructed us how to hold it and when to let it go.

How it works is just similar to hot air balloon. When it’s heated up and filled with less dense air, it will fly.

klook jiufen day tour

Before releasing our lantern, the vendor asked us to bow down and wish. But we were too sneaky, I wasn’t really good in pretending while Jeric quite managed to pretend he was wishing!

After our lantern was released, we strolled around watching others releasing their lanterns. It was such a nice place, I figured. It quite reminded me that we were really in a foreign land.

Sir John called our attention and asked us to get on the bus. We then proceeded to our next stop which is Shifen Waterfall. It was just a 5-minute drive from Shifen Old Street.

Shifen Waterfall

From the parking lot, we walked for about 5 minutes before we reached the first view deck. It involved series after series of climbing down the stairs and I imagined how challenging it’s gonna be going back to the bus. It’s quite not a senior citizen friendly spot. But once you see the waterfall, you’ll know it’s all worth it!

klook jiufen day tour

The first view deck stands at the side of the waterfall. It was a magnificent view indeed, and bunch of people flocked to that certain spot. However we were not contented so we climbed down few more stairs until we reached the view deck that stands right in front of the waterfall.

klook jiufen day tour

It looked more wonderful from that angle. Plus, no other people around!

Shifen Waterfall is a 40-meter tall curtain type waterfall that attracts visitors all year round. Our visit was a good timing since it’s just before the summer starts so the waterfall still had more water, and at the same time the weather was not too cold.

It’s not just about the splendid view, but beautiful music as well. The sound it creates was a relaxing music to my ears. We were fortunate enough to have the spot all to ourselves! However, we had to climb up more stairs to get back to our bus!

Jiufen Old Street

We then headed to Jiufen Old Street and bus ride took about an hour. From the parking area, we climbed again steep stairs to reach Saint Peter Bakeshop where we waited for the bus. There were actually 2 options in reaching the Old Street. You can either take a bus and alight at Family Mart, or walk all the way. We opted to take a bus because we were just too excited! Bus ride took about 5 minutes.

klook jiufen day tour

The temperature was too cold for our clothes, we were not prepared! I only brought a cardigan which helped a little but it was still cold even though I was already wearing a long sleeve polo with cardigan on. I didn’t expect because temperature was just right in Yehliu and Shifen. It felt like 10°C. Nonetheless, it was an amazing experience!

klook jiufen day tour

We walked around the old street checking out some food specialties while at the same time looking for the famed Amei Tea House.

I’m pretty sure Filipinos would love walking here as almost every store we passed by were offering free taste! From snacks to cookies and pastries even up to drinks! We almost got full without shelling out even a dollar!

We first tried everything then we picked our faves and bought them.

klook jiufen day tour

We bought deep fried squid that’s super delicious! You will really know that it’s 100% squid until the last piece! It had a little crunchy coating that’s so flavorful! Aside from that, we also bought a pastry which I forgot the name and forgot to take a photo, it was a long sweet with bread-like texture that taste superb! Another one we bought was fried King Oyster mushroom, it was so good and flavorful as well! By that time, our tummies were officially full so we were not able to buy the other faves. But at least, we have tasted them! HAHA.

We then decided to really look for Amei Tea House because it was getting dark already!

By the way, our bus was scheduled to depart by that time but we wanted to stay for few more hours to witness the place’s grandeur at night. So we opted to skip the tour bus ride back to Taipei City.

Then we finally found the Amei Tea House! At first I didn’t know that was it because everything was in Chinese characters, until I looked up and saw the part of the tea house that I usually see in photos.

klook jiufen day tour

We waited for few minutes to see how it looks like at night. So we first strolled around, went to Family Mart, went back to old street, walked, took photos, walked, and walked.

klook jiufen day tour

It looked so magical! I felt like I was suddenly transported to another era. The darkness and lit up lanterns were the only ones responsible for that sudden shift, nothing more, nothing less.

It’s such a place that looked more alive during the night! I can’t fully explain how beautiful it was. Our photos couldn’t explain fully either. I think you really need to go there and see for yourself!

klook jiufen day tour

Surprisingly, it did not feel creepy. All I actually felt was amazement and appreciation.

And now it’s time to go back to Amei Tea House and witness its grandeur during the night. To do that, we agreed to dine at another tea house just in front of Amei, which is Skyline Tea House.

We chose a table at the top most floor of Skyline Tea House so we could have a better viewing angle for Amei Tea House.

We decided to have dinner but upon asking for the menu, the wait staff told us, “no meal”. So we just asked for their best seller tea and he pointed to Jasmine Tea.

Jeric went to the terrace to take photos of Amei, while I was waiting for our tea. It took about 10-15 minutes before the tea arrived. Then I saw other diners eating their dinner meals and I figured, maybe they only serve meals for locals. I did not dare to confirm because of language barrier. The only english I’ve heard that time was “no meal”.

klook jiufen day tour

Good thing we went food tripping a while ago so we were still full. After finishing our tea, we decided to go back to Taipei City.

While walking to the bus stop, we passed by some areas that are not well lit but it still did not feel creepy for me, I don’t know. HAHA. We just savored the atmosphere before leaving. If only our budget and schedule permits, we will spend a night here.

We left Jiufen at around 8pm and arrived at Taipei around 9:30pm. We used our EasyCards for the bus ride. The bus dropped us off at Beimen Station, and from there, we took the MRT (Green line) going to Zhongshan Station.

To cap off the night, we went again to Ningxia Night Market and had our fave chicken rolls, and Mango Snow Ice ( Bingsu ), before going back to King Plaza Hotel .

Honestly, this was my most favorite trip in Taiwan! Four different amazing spots and experiences all rolled into one trip. So thankful to KKday for making it possible to visit all those places in just one day! This is very beneficial for those who are not traveling with a big group. Renting a car could have cost us much money since we were just two.

I hope you learned few things from our trip and somehow inspired you to visit Taiwan as well!

Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

Taipei’s yehliu geopark, jiufen, shifen, and golden waterfalls.

I really dislike group tours, whether it’s in Taipei or anywhere else. The idea of being part of a group and traveling with strangers makes me feel uneasy. However, private tours are often expensive, which adds to my frustration. So, when I found a tour on Klook that covered all the places I wanted to visit in Taipei, affordable at 41,000 KRW or USD 31 per person, I had to make a compromise. Despite my dislike for group tours , I decided to book it because I didn’t want to spend more money that could be used for another trip. It wasn’t an ideal choice, but I had to go with it. So, I booked the tour to Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen, Shifen, and the Golden Waterfalls for the day after tomorrow.

Joining the Pooh Family

Taipei 101– an overview of the klook tour.

I got a phone call while riding in a Grab to the meeting point. The tour didn’t include hotel pickup or drop-off, which is why it was priced so cheaply. The tour started at 10:30, and we arrived at 10:15, being the last ones there out of around 20 people. I was relieved because I hoped there wouldn’t be many latecomers on this tour, and that’s one of the main reasons I don’t enjoy group tours.

Taiwan’s Green World Songshan– the best place to stay when you visit Taipei.

Our Klook tour guide, Winnie, carried a stuffed Winnie the Pooh animal on a stick, which he used as a prop during the tour. He declared that we would now be known as the Pooh Family. He gave a brief overview of the 4 stops we would make on this full day tour. Then placed a round yellow sticker on my shirt, declaring were were group #7.

The little white Klook tour bus was just big enough for our group. However, it lacked a restroom, USB connectors, or any other modern conveniences apart from seatbelts. It reminded me of a time when I had trouble with the seatbelt on an Asiana flight, but this one just needed to be reinserted into the clasp, and it worked perfectly fine. There were two screens on the bus to watch Klook videos about the places we would be visiting. First up, Yehliu Geopark, about an hour away.

20230618_112333-519x692 Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

Yehliu Geopark

Yehliu Geopark is a beautiful natural geological park on the northeastern coast of Taiwan. It’s known for its special rock formations that were shaped by many years of weathering and erosion. The park has a few remarkable rock formations, such as the famous “Queen’s Head,” which looks like the head of the ancient Egyptian queen, Nefertiti. You’ll also find interesting formations like mushroom rocks, sea trenches, wave-cut platforms, and even seashell fossils on the ground. Be careful where you step, because I almost stepped on one myself!

20230618_120747-519x692 Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

The park is divided into three sections, but on this tour, we’ll have time to explore two of them. The third section offers a scenic hike along the seaside, which I really wish we had time for. I really enjoyed seeing this park, it’s very unique. There was this weird guy playing eerie music with a violin bow and saw. There is a huge covered market selling food, fruit juices, magnets, and other souvenirs. I bought a mango juice, dried mangoes, and a bag of wasabi shrimps chips.

Jiufen and the Golden Waterfalls

The next two stops were 5 minutes apart. Jiufen Old Street is a former mining town and currently, a lively market where you can taste local treats and buy traditional crafts. In addition, you have a unique opportunity to experience the former town’s lantern tradition by writing messages on eco-friendly balloons and releasing them on the old railroad tracks that used to run through the center of Jiufen Old Town. It’s a wonderful way to connect with the town’s heritage while also contributing to its future. Any local can scoop up the downed lanterns and return them to the shops and receive payment. We found a small coffee and sat and watched the fun all around us.

2023-06-21-14_40_31.8590900-519x692 Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

While you’re there, make sure to try some of Jiufen’s local dishes. One popular option is a roasted chicken leg stuffed with sticky and fried rice. Another delicious treat is scoops of ice cream and shaved peanuts then rolled like a burrito. I highly recommend trying both of them because they are absolutely delicious.

20230618_134213-01-519x762 Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

Taipei Niagara Falls

Afterward, we hopped back on the bus to visit the Golden Waterfalls. Although these waterfalls may not be the tallest in the country, they certainly make up for it in width. Some people even refer to them as the “Taipei Niagara Falls.” Being from upstate New York myself, I can testify that while the Golden Waterfalls are undoubtedly stunning, they can’t quite compare to the sheer magnitude of Niagara Falls.

Activity Duration: 2 Hours

20230618_162619-519x626 Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

The last stop of the day provided both the highlight and the lowlight of the trip. The Klook tour bus parked in a crowded parking lot, and we were directed to squeeze into an old public bus with no available seating. The 20-minute ride up to old Shifen city was definitely the most unpleasant part of the entire tour.

20230618_143320-1-scaled Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

I had been eagerly looking forward to visiting Shifen, but unfortunately, the narrow streets packed with shops were overwhelming with people. The added factor of heat, combined with the exhaustion of climbing numerous stairs throughout the day, made it quite challenging for me. At that point, I made a conscious decision not to go down any more stairs, knowing that I would have to climb back up each one.

20230618_164825 Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

After visiting the main attractions, Steven and I sought refuge in a cool, air-conditioned theater located near the famed Ao Ma Teahouse. It was the first theater in Taiwan, and its hard wooden benches provided a much-appreciated respite from the heat. We enjoyed, sans popcorn, watching 4-5 short films about the area before venturing back into the chaos to search for a suitable snack.

20230618_174928-519x692 Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

All Things Come to an End

We found it at the shop above. We ordered two dishes, duck and chicken. Since neither one of us can read Cantonese, we were definitely surprised when both came out cold. Too bad we didn’t have any bread. Who doesn’t love a cold duck or chicken sandwich?

20230618_175353-519x692 Top Must-See Taiwan Sights with Klook Tours

We met the rest of the Pooh family at the entrance, a nondescript 7-Eleven near the bus stop. Thankfully, the bus ride down the mountain was much more pleasant. An hour later, we were saying our goodbyes to the people we met, wishing them all safe travels. We ended the evening with a ride up Taipei 101 and a recommendation to a chicken restaurant a few blocks away.
