How to get from Krabi to Hong Island?

Hong Island is one of the best day trips from Krabi . The cheapest way to get from Krabi to Hong Island is by taking a public longtail boat which costs 500 baht (USD 13.90) per person.

You can book tickets at either Ao Nang Longtail Boat Service  or  Ao Nang Boat Service Club . Just keep in mind that the boat will only depart when there are at least 6 people.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling with a group, you can instead rent a private longtail boat for the day for 3,000 baht (USD 83.40) for a maximum of 6 people.

Note : Both the public and private longtail boats operate between 8 a.m and 4 p.m, daily.

Hong Island Entrance Fee & Opening Hours

Since Hong Island Krabi is located within the Than Bok Khorani National Park, there is an entrance fee of 300 baht (USD 8.34) for adults and 150 baht (USD 4.17) for children.

Most of the time, the entrance fee is not included in the tour price, so make sure to have some cash when you get to the island.

Hong Island is open daily from 8 a.m to 4.30 a.m.

Hong Island Krabi (Koh Hong)

Hong Island (or Koh Hong), is one of the most popular islands in Krabi. Most people visit as a day trip from Ao Nang or Phuket but you can also get there from the islands of Koh Yao Noi or Koh Yao Yai.

Part of the Than Bok Khorani National Park, it boasts one of the most stunning beaches in Krabi . The beach is divided in the middle by a limestone rock formation.

The sand is super soft and white and the turquoise lagoon is great for swimming and snorkeling as the ocean is calm and shallow.

Tip: I recommend snorkeling on the left-hand side of the beach, near the viewpoint entrance, since this is where you’ll find the most fish.

limestone rocks floating in a turquoise lagoon

If you want to avoid the crowds, be sure to visit early in the morning. In case you can’t get there early enough, I recommend visiting Hong Island at least before 2 p.m when the tide is still high.

This is because swimming will be much more enjoyable and the scenery is far more spectacular during high tide.

Note : Keep in mind that you’re not allowed to snorkel above the coral reef area during low tide, so be sure to get there early if you want to see the colorful fish.

Apart from swimming, you can also rent kayaks on Hong Island or explore the small jungle trail to spot some wildlife and admire the rock formations.

There’s also a small restaurant and a beach bar on the island. Prices are quite decent and I was able to get lunch for about 100 baht (USD 2.78).

Drinks are more expensive than on the mainland though. For example, a small water bottle costs about 30 baht while fruit shakes cost between 80 and 120 baht. There’s also a toilet/changing room not too far from the restaurant.

Hong Island Viewpoint

The latest attraction on Koh Hong Island is the 360-degree viewpoint which can be accessed through a metal staircase consisting of 400+ steps.

The Hong Island viewpoint is located on the eastern end of the island and is totally worth the hike for a stunning 360-degree view of the lagoon and neighboring islands.

I saw a sign at the entrance saying that the hike takes around 45 minutes but I was able to reach the top in 15 minutes. So, as long as you’re relatively fit, you should be able to get to the top in less than 30 minutes.

Hong Lagoon is another popular stop on the Hong Island tour. The lagoon can be accessed through a narrow opening between the limestone cliffs.

The scenery here is truly spectacular as the turquoise lagoon is surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. The water is extremely clear, making it a great spot to swim and snorkel.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Hong Island is from November to March as you’ll have near-perfect weather but note that there will be more tourists during this time.

If you don’t mind the occasional rainfall (luckily, they don’t last long), you can instead visit during the shoulder months of April/May or September/October.

A complete guide to Koh Hong Island Krabi

Koh Hong Island Krabi - Shows Ricky standing on a rock looking at the sea

If you’re a fan of serene beaches and remote islands, then this might be the trip for you… White sands meets turquoise water at the highly popular Hong Island, located in Thailand’s southern province of Krabi. Here, you’ll get to explore a stunning islet with gorgeous tropical scenery and hike up to one of the most impressive viewpoints on the island (if you fancy a challenge!).

Hong Island is one of the most popular day trips and island hopping stops in Krabi, and in this guide, we’ll share everything you need to know ahead of a visit. Read on for our complete guide to Hong Island Krabi. 😊

What is Hong Island in Krabi?

Hong Island, also known as Koh Hong, is a picturesque island known for its impressive limestone rock formations. Located in Thanbok Kharanee National Park, it’s a popular day trip for tourists coming from both Phuket and Krabi – and we can definitely see why! It’s one of the larger islands in the national park and has plenty to see and do. Hiking trails, beautiful beaches, sea kayaking and snorkelling are just some of the things you can do on the island.

Is Hong Island worth visiting?

Hong island is a popular island to visit in Krabi, but not necessarily the MOST popular. It’s less visited than other beach destinations such as Railay Beach or Poda island, but is still a top attraction. This is a good thing; it attracts less crowds than neighbouring island – a great plus in our opinion.

How to get to hong island krabi.

There are a number of ways to reach Hong Island, and depending on your budget and eagerness to arrive before all the crowds, you’ll want to consider all options.

  • Book a group speed boat tour – If you’re looking for a complete package when visiting the island, with a stop off at other islands along the way, we recommend booking a tour. We went with Sea Eagle Tours Krabi and highly recommend them. It takes around 30 minutes to reach Hong Island from Ao Nang, meaning you’ll get there much quicker than the traditional long tail boats.
  • For a slightly cheaper group tour option, book a long tail boat tour to Hong Island. With a similar itinerary to the speed boat option mentioned above, you’ll tour Hong and a number of other beautiful destinations. It takes around one hour to get to Hong via long tail boat.
  • Book a long tail boat straight to Hong Island – If you’re not looking to go on a tour and want to spend more time at Hong Island, hop on one of the long tail boats from Nopparat Thara Pier or Ao Nang. They run to and from the mainland throughout the day. This is a great option for those that want to spend 5+ hours exploring and relaxing on the island.
  • Splash out and opt for a private tour – Do you have a special occasion coming up? Or maybe you’re a group of friends? One cool way to spend the day is by chartering your own private long tail boat. It’s a costly form of getting to Hong island Krabi, but is worth it for the lack of crowds. With your own long tail, you can choose to arrive at Hong Island early morning before the crowds of other tourists arrive.

The Koh Hong Island tour

As the most popular way to visit Hong Island, we opted for the Hong Island hopping tour. Here’s the full itinerary:

You’ll start off the day by getting picked up from your hotel by an open air van, usually between 8am and 9am. You’ll depart from either Nopparat Thara Pier, Ao Nang Beach or Railay beach.

Itinerary  – The top stop-off points on the Hong Island tour

Koh lao lading  .

Picture a small islet surrounded by stunning limestone cliffs… you’ve now arrived at Koh Lao Lading! This beautiful island will be the first stop on your tour and makes a perfect start to the trip. Koh Lao Lading is nicknamed the ‘paradise island,’ and we can definitely see why.

You’ll have the opportunity walk around this small island to the rocky beach on the far side of the boat dock. There isn’t much in the way of exploring, due to its small size, but you can take a typical tourist photo on the swing, which we thought was a nice touch. There’s also a shallow area where you can snorkel.

It’s a tiny island that has a beach that was voted one of the best in the world. However, it can get very crowded, which takes away from the beauty of it.

image showing a speed boat in the distance docked up on the beach with lots of tourists

Pak Bia Island

The next stop off point on the tour is the Pak Bia island. This uniquely shaped tropical island consists of two small islands that are connected by a sand bar. The area  across from where the boats dock is the best spot on the island for swimming and snorkelling, with its turquoise waters, towering rock stacks and an array of fish that swim in its shallows.

When the tide is low, a number of sand bars and hidden beaches are revealed, so if you’re lucky, you might see areas of Pak Bia that other tourists haven’t seen! The entire are is a beautiful spot to take pictures and admire the view. This is a short stop on the tour – around 30-40 minutes.

image showing two brown long tail boats docked up on the beach, surrounded by trees - a complete guide to hong island, krabi

Hong Island Lagoon

To get to Hong Island beach you’ll first need to pass through the spectacular Hong Island Lagoon. You’ll enter this spectacular lagoon area via a narrow rock opening, where you’re soon greeted by tall and elegant cliffs, jungle-like scenery, and turquoise blue waters. The lagoon has a very secluded appeal to it as you can only reach the area by boat. During low tide, you’ll be able to wade in the shallow waters. High tide creates a completely different setting.

The lagoon is an excellent place to stop off at for a spot of swimming or snorkelling. The tour we opted only toured the lagoon without a swim stop. However, if you opt for a private tour, you can request a longer stop at the lagoon on your itinerary.

image showing the speed boat sailing through the turquoise lagoon with other boats behind

Hong Island

The star of the show, and one of the best islands in the national park and Krabi area is Hong Island. The high elevation island is covered in rich tropical forest. It’s a great place to visit for a spot of sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling and even for a hike if you’re feeling up for the challenge. Hong is much larger than the surrounding islands so it never feels too crowded.

Aside from the stunning beach and epic relaxation spots, one activity that’s definitely worth doing is climbing the 400+ stairs to see the most amazing views of the island and surrounding area. The Hong Island viewpoint is a top thing to do, and whilst challenging, it only takes around 15 minutes to walk to the top. There are four resting spots on the ascent where you can catch your breath

In addition to the viewpoint platforms, there’s also a small nature trail that’s located just behind the beach. The path of the trail meanders amongst the native tropical plants and has plenty of wildlife. We spotted a monitor lizard, butterflies and some very cool looking birds on the short nature walk.

Note: You’ll need to pay a national park fee of 400 baht per person to enter Hong Island Krabi.

Our top tips for visiting Hong Island

  • When you first arrive at Hong Island, plan to visit the viewpoint and nature trail first, especially if arriving on a morning. You’ll experience the beauty of these areas with less tourists around.
  • When completing the mini hike up to Hong Island viewpoint, be sure to bring lots of water with you, wear sun cream and bring along a hat if you have one. There isn’t a lot of shade once you reach the top of the cliff.
  • If you want lots of time on Hong Island and aren’t particularly bothered about visiting other nearby islands, opt for a return transfer directly to Hong instead of an island hopping tour.
  • If you’re looking for a quieter spot to relax on the island, walk to the furthest end of the beach from the boat docking area. Most tourists grab a spot on the beach right next to the dock.
  • If you want to do a spot of sea kayaking on Hong Island, you’ll need to reserve this beforehand with your tour guide or rent kayaks as soon as you arrive at Koh Hong. There are limited kayaks available and they’re always in high demand.
  • Bring snorkelling equipment with you. Hong Island’s shore is the perfect place to spot some tropical fish.

Hong Island tour and transport options:

Speed boat tour.

We highly recommend booking an organised group tour with Sea Eagle Tours through Get Your Guide . You’ll tour the islands on a modern, double-engine speed boat that’s fast and comfortable. It’s also the quickest way to reach the islands. Other speed boat tours are available. However, we researched companies before arrival and Sea Eagle tend to have the best reviews.

image showing the back of the speed boat and the two larger motors - a complete guide to hong island, krabi

  • The tour is reasonably priced, considering a group long tail boat tour doesn’t cost much less.
  • The speed boat gets you to places much faster than the traditional Thai long tail boat. You’ll spend less time at sea and more time exploring the islands.
  • Lunch is included (there aren’t any restaurants on the island, making it more difficult to find food).
  • The entire tour is organised, so you don’t need to do a thing.
  • Many tour groups arrive on the islands around the same time. This means it can be overcrowded at times, especially during peak times of the year.
  • You might need to wait around for other people on the tour at times (if they’re late at arriving/ getting back to the boat).
  • Speed boats hold more passengers, usually 20-40 people. This can be less appealing for those that prefer smaller group tours. Long tail boats only fit around 10 people, for example.
  • The entire day trip, including transportation, lunch, and the use of snorkelling equipment costs 1350 baht per person.

Long tail boat tour

Very similar to the speed boat tour, with almost identical itineraries, a long tail boat tour is another great way to explore Hong Island and the surrounding national park. Smaller than speed boats, long tail boats fit up to 10 passengers. These tours are slightly cheaper than speed boats and as there are so many long tail boats in Krabi, you can sometimes negotiate prices.

koh hong tour

  • Smaller group sizes of 10 or so people. There’s less waiting around for other guests.
  • Long tail group tours of Hong Island in Krabi are the cheapest tour option.
  • Many people love the traditional experience of seeing Thailand’s island on its iconic long tail boat.
  • Long tail boat tours take almost double the time to reach Koh Hong Island compared to speed boat tours.
  • These boats can be quite noisy and bumpy compared to their speed boat counterparts.
  • Tours are less organised than speed boat companies as long tail excursions are run by a range of different providers. Therefore, experiences differ depending on drivers and guides.
  • Long tail boat tours to Hong Island cost around 1100 Thai baht per person. Prices can vary due to the vast number of different long tail boat tour providers.

Hong Island Long Tail taxi boat

If you’re looking to just visit Hong Island, as opposed to seeing other islands along the way, the long tail group tour might be best for you. You can book a return transfer to the island on Ao Nang Beach or the Railay pier. Long tail boats usually wait to fill up before departing and you’ll get a pickup time for return back to the mainland. Most long tail boasts depart to Hong on a morning and return around 4pm.

koh hong tour

  • If you head out first thing in the morning, you’ll be one of the first people on the island before all the tour boats arrive.
  • You’re able to spend most of the day there and won’t have any time constraints.
  • It’s more affordable than the likes of the speed boat tour. This is the cheapest way to visit Hong Island.
  • It’s less of an experience compared to the Hong Islands Tour as mentioned above, as you only go to one island.
  • It’ll take longer to reach the island. It takes around 30 minutes by speed boat, and around an hour by long tail boat.
  • The ride by long tail is loud and a little bumpy compared to speed boat tours.
  • Costs for the long tail boat return transfer are around 400-600 Thai baht per person.

Private tour to Hong Island

The final, and most luxurious tour option is a private tour. If there’s a small group of you, or even just the two of you and want to celebrate an occasion, then this is the way to do it. You can choose a traditional long tail boat, or a small speed boat to take you to the island. You’ll get to experience Koh Hong Island and the surrounding national park away from the tourist crowds and can set your own itinerary. A private tour is a great option, but it’s also the most expensive way to explore Hong.

koh hong tour

  • A private tour is more intimate, with just you and your partner/ friends.
  • You can organise the trip yourselves and tell the driver where you want to go first (this is a good way to avoid the mass crowds).
  • The tour is designed around you. You can decide how long you spend at each place and decide when to leave.
  • Lunch is usually included.
  • A private tour is the most expensive option, out of all the options mentioned above.
  • Once you arrive at the main islands, you’ll be surrounded by other tourists. There isn’t a great amount of time at sea in your private boat.

Costs will vary depending on the type of boat and the tour provider. Have a look online or negotiate a rate in person for the best deals. You may be able to negotiate a better rate during quieter times. Private tours start from around 4000 baht.

What to bring with you on the Hong Island Krabi tour

As it’s a full day out, you won’t want to leave any essentials at home. Here are some of the must-haves to bring along with you:

  • Bottles of water (ideally in a thermal flask to keep the water as cold as possible throughout the day). Some tours provide drinking water
  • A hat and pair of sunglasses
  • Water shoes
  • Sanitary products and tissue (some toilets won’t have toilet roll, so it’s a good idea to bring some with you)
  • A Go Pro / camera

image of a stunning turquoise beach with people swimming in the sea - a complete guide to hong island, krabi

Food and drink on Hong Island

Due to the remote location of many islands in Krabi, there aren’t many options when it comes to dining on the islands. If opting for a tour, they’ll provide you with a packed lunch that’s included within the tour package.

There are a few beach shacks and kiosks on Hong Island that sell sodas, waters and fruit shakes, along with snacks such as crisps and biscuits. We also noticed a small snack shack on the neighbouring island on the tour, Koh Lading.

If you’re planning a trip to Koh Hong Island on your own, without a tour, we recommend bringing plenty of water, snacks and even make yourself a package lunch.

Toilets and changing facilities

You’ll find toilets on all of the islands on the tour; Hong Island, Koh Lading and Pak Bia.

Best time to visit – Morning vs afternoon vs sunset

As with many islands in Krabi, the Hong Islands are extremely popular amongst tourists and can get really busy, especially during peak times of the year (December – March). If you’re on a group tour, you won’t have a choice of itinerary. However, if you plan a private tour or visit via a return boat taxi, we recommend arriving either first thing in the morning, or later on in the afternoon to watch the glorious sunset. Not only is the weather much more manageable at these times, you’ll also avoid the mass crowds of tourists!

Our final tips for an amazing day of island exploration

  • If you’re not doing an organised tour, try to catch the first long tail boat that leaves from Ao Nang/ Railay. That way, you’ll get to experience Hong Island at its best, without masses of tourists. The same goes for private tours; ask if you can depart early morning.
  • When you arrive at the islands, be sure to walk further along away from all of the boats. You’ll find that these areas are much quieter and less people tend to relax there.
  • Bring food with you if you’re not doing an organised tour.
  • Watch out for small rocks in the sea. Not only are they sharp, but some sea lice are known to roam around these areas and nibble at your feet and legs.
  • If you’re prone to seasickness, be sure to sit at the back of the boat for a less of a bumpy ride.

Private trips to Hong Island

We always highly recommend booking a private boat for travelers with a bigger budget or those traveling as a group in Thailand .

A private trip to Hong Island is absolutely worth the money because it’s much more comfortable, you can customize the itinerary according to what you like, and you have a more relaxed schedule.

While you can book your Hong Island tour on the spot in Krabi , booking a boat tour online has many more advantages!

You can mostly cancel free of charge up to 24 hours prior and read reviews from fellow travelers, and many tours include hotel pickup, meals, and snorkeling gear.

We booked our trip in advance, and in case the weather wasn’t good, it would be possible to reschedule it easily without any hassle.

Things to do on Hong Island

Koh Hong, or Hong Island is not a big island, so there isn’t that much to do on and around it, but there are a few things on the island that stand out.

Hong Island Map with attractions and information, Krabi

1. Admire the beauty of Hong Lagoon

The jewel of Koh Hong Island is the Hong Lagoon which can only be reached through a narrow passageway between huge limestone cliffs.

Hong Island Lagoon, aerial photo from the drone, Krabi

The lagoon at Hong Island is gorgeous, and we took the opportunity to do a short swimming stop there. And during lower tide, you can see the bottom of the lagoon and spot fish swimming around.

The color of the water at Hong Island Lagoon changes depending on the tide and the weather conditions (sunny, cloudy), and the angle from which you observe it.

2. Visit Hong Island 360 Viewpoint

The 360 viewpoint on Hong Island, built in 2020, is easily one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Thailand, with stunning 360 views of Phang Nga Islands, surrounding Krabi Islands, and Koh Hong Beach.

Amazing views of Phang Nga Bay, Hong Island viewpoint, Krabi

To get to the viewpoint of Hong Island, you need to climb 419 metal stairs. And most of the walkway is luckily in the shade.

There are actually two different viewing platforms, but the highest one is the most popular one as it offers the best view of Phang Nga Bay.

View from 360 viewpoint, Hong Island, Krabi

It usually takes around 20 minutes to reach the top of the Hong Island viewpoint, but it took us only about 10 minutes to reach the highest viewpoint without stopping.

However, we recommend you take it slow, as the humidity and heat can be hard to handle. And don’t forget to bring water with you!

Taking photos at 360 viewpoint of Phang Nga Bay on Hong Island

The Hong Island viewpoint reminded us of the Ang Thong National Park viewpoint we visited in Koh Samui . However, the hike up was easier than in Ang Thong.

3. Relax on the beach

You can relax on Koh Hong Island’s white sand beach in the small bay with beautiful turquoise water.

Aerial photo of Hong Island and beach, Krabi

We were surprised at how fine the sand on the Hong Island beach was.

And there are actually two parts of the beach, separated by a large limestone formation. But the first beach you enter serves more as a jetty/pier for boats that come and for paying the entrance fee for the park.

The beach part closest to the viewpoint is the most beautiful one.

Swimming on Hong Island in Phang Nga Bay, Krabi

4. Go kayaking or snorkeling around Hong Island

You can also go snorkeling and kayaking at the Hong Island beach. It’s not the best snorkeling spot, but you can see some fish and a few corals.

Snorkeling on Hong Island in Phang Nga Bay, Krabi

As the bottom here is sandy, the visibility is often limited. We weren’t lucky to have good visibility during our visit, so we skipped snorkeling.

Some tours include kayaks in the price, but you can also rent one while on the island.

5. Visit Koh Lao Lading – Paradise Island

Koh Lao Lading is a small island next to Hong Island with a stunning beach, famous for the swing where everyone takes photos. And you can visit it as part of many Hong Island day trips.

Swinging on the swing at Lao Lading Island, Phang Nga Bay

The beach at Lao Lading is quite small, so just a few boats can make it crowded. But we were all alone since we visited this beach first thing in the morning. 🙂

6. Visit Koh Phakbia and Koh Rai islands

Depending on your tour, you might also stop at Koh Phakbia and Koh Rai, connected by a sandbar during low tide.

You can see a similar phenomenon at Koh Tup Island on a Krabi 5 islands sunset tour .

What is the price of a Hong Island day tour?

Depending on the tour and boat type, the price

for a Hong Island day tour ranges from 35 USD to 300 USD.

National Park fees

Also, Koh Hong is a part of Than Bok Khorani National Park, so you have to pay for an entrance ticket for your visit.

OPENING HOURS AND TICKETS

The entrance fee for Hong Island is 300 baht for foreign adults and 150 baht for children and can only be paid in cash.

Hong Island is open from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Most tours to Hong Island don’t include the national park fees in the price, and you’ll have to pay it on the spot before entering the island. So bring an appropriate amount of cash.

What to expect from a Hong Island day trip

Getting to Hong Island from Krabi takes around 50 minutes by longtail boat and about 25 minutes by speedboat.

So if you’re going on only a 4-hour trip, you don’t have that much time to enjoy all the locations.

From Phuket , it takes longer to get to Koh Hong than from Krabi , so a longer tour is preferable. However, from Koh Yao Noi or Koh Yao Yai, it only takes about 15 minutes to get there.

Facilities on Hong and nearby islands

Koh Hong, Koh Lao Lading, and Koh Phakbia all have free restrooms, and Koh Hong also has a restaurant where you can buy some food and water.

There’s also a small store with smoothies and other drinks available at Lao Lading.

And both Lao Lading and Koh Hong have a big shaded area where you can relax.

Our luxury longtail boat tour included food and drinks, so we personally didn’t need anything extra.

What to pack for the Hong Island day tour?

The main things you need to pack for the Hong Island day tour:

  • Reef safe sunscreen
  • Quick-dry Towel
  • Bathing suit
  • Dry clothes (use code SHIPPEDAWAY for 10% at Unbound Merino )
  • Waterproof bag
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Action camera ( GoPro with a waterproof case or Osmo Action )

We brought our waterproof backpack that was very useful for our island hopping trips in Thailand and kayaking or beach days. We can fit our camera and drone inside and feel safe.

Boats, especially speedboats, get wet, if not from water splashing inside, then from constantly going in and out of the water, especially on snorkeling trips.

Best time to visit Hong Island

The best time to visit Hong Island is between December and March , when the weather is the most stable.

Islands of Phang Nga Bay

The hottest months on Hong Island are mid-March to May, just before the monsoon, which has heavy rainfall and lasts from June to October.

Keep in mind that in the transitional and rainy season, the best time for exploring is in the morning when it’s less likely to rain. And for that reason, we highly recommend booking a morning trip.

Swimming and snorkeling, Hong Island beach, Krabi

Krabi’s unpredictable weather

We first visited Krabi province in January, when we had a mix of beautiful clear blue skies, clouds, and rain for almost a week. And it should have been nice then.

The second time we visited was in the first week of June when the weather was again quite mixed.

We were likely just unlucky with the weather in Krabi , but the weather is definitely unpredictable.

However, we were fortunate during our tour as we had beautiful weather for exploring Hong Island. But on the way there and back, we had rain and cloudy weather.

Can you stay overnight on Hong Island?

Top Sights Thailand Ko Hong

Krabi Province, Thailand

Koh Hong makes up the gap with gorgeous natural formations, pristine beaches and multiple avenues for adventure.

The island of Koh Hong in Than Bok Khorani National Park sits 8km off the Krabi coastline. It takes its name from the circular lagoon at its center—the soaring karst cliffs fringing the lagoon recall a massive room (“hong” in Thai). Visitors can kayak inside through a 10-meter-wide passage, and swim in the lagoon’s shallow, crystal-clear waters.

Koh Hong’s Pilae Beach is divided down the middle by a massive rock formation, but either side delights swimmers with clear water and blazing white sand. To explore the island’s interior, hit the 600-meter-long trail that cuts right into Koh Hong’s jungle interior, allowing close encounters with the island’s monitor lizards and white-faced gibbons.

The best time to visit Koh Hong falls between November and May.

Koh Hong 🏝️ an amazing island near Krabi

  • Islands , Koh Yao Noi , Tours
  • Last updated 4 January 2024 20 May 2024

How to Get to Koh Hong Island?

Koh Hong is a small and very popular island located halfway between Koh Yao Noi and Krabi , about 7 km from each and technically 30 km east of the closest port of Phuket Island. The island is superb and consists of two enclosed beaches and a bay that reminds a lot of the famous Maya Bay on Phi Phi island .

koh hong island 4

Koh Hong is very popular, especially for tourists based in Krabi, and there is a permanent ballet of longtail boats and speedboats dropping and picking up visitors all day. Koh Hong is part of a national park; therefore, a fee is required to step on the beach. In addition, like in most national parks, no alcohol is allowed, and you won’t be allowed to fly a drone.

koh hong island thailand

We used a longtail boat from Koh Yao Noi for 800 baht per person, including a small picnic on the small island of Koh Pakbia. The boat picked us up from Klong Jark Beach in front of our hotel Cape Kudu, and the ride from Koh Yao Noi was smooth and only took about 20 mn.

koh hong bay1

We entered the first hong, which is a beautiful, very shallow bay without a beach (Hong means room in Thai, and if you explore Phang Nga Bay, you will hear the word Hong very frequently because here, it refers to an enclosed lagoon, usually accessible via a narrow passage) and gently glided around to enjoy the beauty. Because the entrance is very narrow, it can get quite busy and messy with boats trying to get in and out safely.

koh hong main beach

We soon moved to the main beach of Koh Hong, and things got really busy there. We had to pay 60 baht for Thai nationals and 300 baht for foreigners to our pilot so he could handle the fee to the park’s official staff, drop us on the long floating pier and move away fast to give access to the next boat. We had to walk a long, busy, floating bouncy pier and were glad to reach the stable beach.

koh hong main pier

Despite the many boats parked nearby, the two beaches were not as busy as we thought, but don’t expect a deserted spot as it often appears on Instagram photos ! The beaches are wide, and the sand is incredibly white, one of the smoothest we have seen. The high limestone cliffs surrounding the two bays add a fantastic touch to the atmosphere, and the place truly gives a majestic impression. The water is warm, quiet and crystal clear, so don’t forget your swimsuits!

koh hong island 3

The viewpoint

If you are brave enough, and many visitors are, you can climb the stairs to Koh Hong Viewpoint. It’s challenging, but the view from up there is worth the effort. You will appreciate a grandiose panorama with many limestone cliffs emerging vertically from the sea.

koh hong island 9

We spent a couple of hours swimming and exploring Koh Hong; it was time for lunch. Our pilot took us to a small nearby island called Koh Pakbia, where we unfolded a beach mattress and ate our modest lunch; nothing exceptional, but the place was beautiful.

koh hong island 5

Once our picnic finished, it was time to head back to our hotel, but due to the low tide, we were dropped off at a different beach where a pickup truck was waiting for us.

koh hong island 6

Overall, Koh Hong was a lot busier than we expected it to be, mostly with tourists staying in the nearby Krabi, but it is a beauty to visit at least once in a lifetime.

Day Trip to Krabi's Best Offshore Island

Mu Koh Hong is a group of small limestone islands located within the Than Bok Khorani National Marine Park.

This group of islands is located about one hour by longtail boat north west of Krabi’s main tourist area, Ao Nang.

Koh Hong is part of the Than Bok Khorani National Marine Park.

The largest island in this group of islands and the most spectacular is Koh Hong also known as Ko Lao Pile.

With its picture postcard beach, towering limestone cliffs, and a secret lagoon hidden in the middle.

Spectacular beaches at Koh Hong, Krabi.

Ko Hong is one of the best day trips that should be included when planning your day trips and tours offshore of Krabi.

There is only one beach at Ko Hong, this stunning stretch of beach with fine white sand is called Pelay Beach and is separated into two by a massive limestone carst that sits just offshore.

Hong Island, Krabi

The southern part of the beach is where longtail boats and speed boats arrive with day trippers.

The northern section of the beach is kept clear for swimming, and snorkeling and is loaded with fish that follow you through the water.

Our day trip to Koh Hong, started relatively early, leaving Ao Nang by longtail boat around 8.00 am and arriving at Hong Island an hour later to find that we had the whole island to ourselves, apart from the National Park Rangers.

Koh Hong without the crowds.

We were in heaven, it was such a fantastic experience to be able to explore this magnificent island, basking in the sun, swimming and snorkeling before any other day trippers arrived.

Day trippers and tour groups started to arrive around 11.00 am, and it began to get a little crowded.

So we decided to move on to our next island adventure, but before we did our longtail boat driver took us to Hong Islands main attractions a secret room called a “hong”.

Longtail boats arriving at Koh Hong, Krabi

The Hong is a large lagoon surrounded by tree covered cliffs.

Access to the lagoon is through a narrow opening in the rock formations, it is only accessible by kayak, or longtail boat when the tides are right, allowing you to swim around in the clear but very shallow waters.

Other eco activities and fun things to do at Hong Island include snorkelling and scuba diving, fishing, hiking and kayaking, relaxing or just admiring the superb views.

Ko Hong and the smaller Islands are one of the best and most popular tourist attractions in Krabi.

National Park Ranger Station at Koh Hong.

The National Park Ranger Station is located on Hong Island and visitors are required to pay a 200 baht National Park fee.

There are camping facilities available, although you will need to bring your own tent.

If you take a day trip to Koh Hong, check to see that the National Park fee is included in the price of the tour.

Facilities at Hong Island include wooden tables and benches where you can enjoy lunch under the shade of the trees.

Kayaks are also available for hire from the booth located just behind the beach and most importantly toilets.

As Koh Hong is National Park, smoking and drinking or selling alcohol on the beach is not allowed, however there is a designated smoking area just near the National Park Booth.

Pakbia Island in the National Marine Park, Krabi.

After leaving Koh Hong our next stop was Pakbia Island and Rai Island where we just chilled on the beach and relaxed in the calm waters.

On low tide you can walk across the sand bank to Rai Island. Just offshore is a deep coral reef, and one of the best spots to go snorkelling.

Our last stop of our island hopping adventure was Lading Island also known as Paradise Island , from the main beach you have spectacular views across the seascape.

Lading Island in Krabi

Koh Hong Travel Tips

The best time to visit Hong Island is early in the morning before lots of day trips and speed boat tours arrive, take plenty of water, lots of sun screen and a towel.

The quickest way to get to Ko Hong is by speed boat, however a longtail boat is so much more fun.

Hong Island day trips from Krabi.

You can book day trips and tours to Ko Hong from tour operators, travel agents or at most hotels in Krabi.

If you would like to book tours we have found Easy Day Thailand to be a reputable and reliable company.

As we were a group of four, it worked out cheaper to hire a boat and a driver for the day.

We negotiated a good price which included pick up and from our hotel, snorkeling equipment, National Park fees and a return transfer back to our hotel direct with one of the local longtail boat drivers, at Ao Nang.

Koh Hong - A Day Trip to One of Krabi's Islands

Dieser Artikel ist auch verfügbar auf: Deutsch

Hong Island – a day trip from Ao Nang

How to get to ao nang, accommodation in ao nang – our hotel tip, the way to hong island, arrival on hong island, koh hong: tours and tickets.

During our last stay in Ao Nang in January 2015 we wanted to discover something new. This time our choice was Hong Island and so we took a tour to this beautiful island. Dreamlike water, a white sand beach and breathtaking islands on the way made this trip absolutely recommendable.

To reach Ao Nang or Hong Island it’s best to travel via Krabi. With this option you can fly to the Krabi International Airport which is connected to locations in Thailand as well as e.g. Kuala Lumpur or Qatar. More information about flights, departure times and prices can be found on Skyscanner .

You can also travel by bus or boat (from Koh Lanta etc.) to Krabi Town. From there you can continue your trip to Ao Nang. From the airport or the bus station you will have to take another means of transport to get to Ao Nang.

A Songthaew (shared taxi) from the bus station costs about 80 Baht to Ao Nang. A taxi costs about 400 Baht from Krabi Town or the airport. The cheapest option would be the shuttle bus, which runs regularly from the airport through Krabi Town to Ao Nang, for a price of 100 Baht per person.

Furthermore, you can take the ferry from Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi directly to Ao Nang. These boats will arrive at Nopparat Thara Pier and not at Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi Town. To see connections, times, prices and tickets for buses and boats, visit 12go.asia .

The selection of accommodation in Ao Nang and the surrounding area is huge. We have stayed several times in Ao Nang and tried some different hotels. Since we are always traveling there by scooter, it doesn’t bother us personally if the accommodation is a bit further from the beach. This way you have peace and seclusion and can totally relax. Very suitable for this is the Deevana Krabi Resort , which is located in the middle of a beautiful green area. Both beaches, the Ao Nang Beach and the Noppharat Thara Beach , are just minutes away by taxi or scooter.

You can discover more beautiful accommodations in Ao Nang here .

Getting from Ao Nang to Koh Hong is similar to the last trips to Koh Poda, Koh Gai and Koh Tub. The starting point is Ao Nang beach as well, where you can buy tickets at the small ticket booths near the beach. I described how to buy the tickets in the previous articles like Koh Poda . At those booths you can buy the tickets to your desired destination.

The difference to Koh Poda is that there isn’t a regular service and you have to rent the whole longtail boat for up to 6 persons. This service is offered from 8.00 A.M. to 4.00 P.M. on a daily basis and the boat trip will cost you 2500 Baht – all together. Another option would be booking a day trip to Hong Island.

From Ao Nang to Hong Island with the longtail boat

The advantage of a trip like this is that you don’t have to wait for more people to fill the rented longtail boat. You can just start your trip right away – your private Krabi island hopping . Past the Nopparattara beach and Klong Muang beach you are driving to the open sea. It’s about an hour from Ao Nang to Hong Island by boat. Lean back and enjoy the ride and view for a while.

The lagoon inside Hong Island

Before we were going to the beach our driver made another stop at the back of Hong Island, where you can discover a beautiful blue lagoon .

The small entrance is a bit hidden and remembers me of the arrival at the Maya bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh . However there is no white sand beach, but rather a clear blue lagoon, which is also perfect for a swim.

At the arrival on Koh Hong you will be required to pay an additional fee for the national park. This fee is 200 Baht per person. Eventually after that you can straight head to the beach.

Der traumhafte Strand von Hong Island

The beach is seperated into two parts by a hugh rock. The more beautiful part of it is located between that rock and the big limestone cliffs. Here you can find a small bay where you can have a great swim and some snorkeling. The water is pretty clear and the sand wonderfully white. Does it get any better?

We had some sticky rice with us to attract the fish in the water. They are not so afraid of people and you can take a nice picture or two with them. For example with an awesome GoPro, like we did.

Many colorful fish in the water of Hong Island

About opposite of the huge rock, which seperates both beaches, there are 2 small shops where you can buy some water, beer or other drinks. Obviously the prices are much higher than on the mainland. If you want to save some money then bring along some drinks and food with you when you start the trip.

The rock which seperates the two beaches of Hong Island

Unfortunately there will most probably be low tide at the afternoon. Make sure you start your trip to Hong Island in the early morning. Because now the rocks, which are actually in the deeper water, will come to light. The swimming isn’t so enjoyable anymore and it looks way more beautiful at high tide in the morning. Especially for some nice pictures.

Longtail boats at Hong Island, Krabi

After a couple of hours swimming and relaxing at the beach it was time to return to Ao Nang. I can really recommend a trip to Hong Island, because it’s one of the most beautiful islands off the coast of Krabi.
