Best time for travel classical greece.

While just about any month is great to visit Greece, there are a few prime times of the year for the Classical Greece tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Winter: Picturesque Arachova, a ski town, attracts travelers to its slopes during the winter (December through March). Yet even on the coldest days, temperatures rarely dip below freezing.

Spring: This is the best time of year to see green landscapes and blossoming flowers carpeting Greece. It’s especially breathtaking near the Meteora monasteries.

Fall: By mid- to late October, the peak tourism season starts to wind down and sites are less crowded. A sky full of sunshine but without the summer heat make this a wonderful time of year to explore mainland Greece.

Visiting Athens, one of the most historical cities in the world, with the so many monuments, museums and sites related to the ancient Greek gods, we are sure that except for being very excited about it, you also need our assistance to help you make the most of your time during your stay. But it's not only the visit of Athens that will help you complete the puzzle of your experience in Greece, therefore giving us the number of days that you have at your disposal, we will do our best to design the perfect private tour for you inside Athens, as well as driving around the Greek mainland and the Peloponnese, off the beaten track.

Private Tours in Athens

Private Tours in Athens

No matter how many guide books or blogs about Athens you may have read, noone can present the history, the vibe and the "secret corners" of this city better than a local. Traveling is not only about getting to a place, but also experiencing it to the max. Part of the real experience has to be learning about the history, visiting the remaining parts of ancient sites, but also discovering "holes on the wall" where the locals shop or dine, and learning as much as possible about the current way of living. Our private tours are focusing on offering you an experience that includes all the above, as well as the chance to mingle with local people and learn first hand the famous Greek hospitality. By the way, the Greek word is "filoxenia" (filos + xenos = friend + stranger) that means friend of "strangers", visitors from other parts of the world, and the protector god of filoxenia/hospitality was Zeus himself.

Best Greek Island Tours from Athens

Updated On: March 8, 2023

Written By: Pavlos Inglesis

Athens is not only the cultural epicenter of Greece and Europe, but also a place that you can use as your base to explore some of the little greek islands around it. The greek islands near Athens provide a glimpse to the past with their cute fish villages and their unique green mediterranean landscape and the great thing is that they are all very well connected to Athens making them ideal for a daytrip (or 2…). Here are the best greek island tours from Athens:

BEST GREEK ISLAND TOUR FROM ATHENS: Hydra, Poros & Aegina Day Cruise with lunch

I am not going to lie to you: you should not even start trying to search for cruises or tours that will take you to Santorini or Mykonos from Athens and back in a day. It’s just not posible because these 2 islands are way too far and it takes 3-5 hours with a ferry to reach them. And back.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GREEK ISLAND TOURS FROM ATHENS

  • All Athens boat tours depart from the ferry port of Piraeus (or Pireas). Here it is on Google Maps .
  • You can always arrange your own ferry ticket to an island near Athens through booking from Ferryhopper , but you won’t get any guide or a full tour experience.
  • The best islands near Athens to visit are Egina (Aegina), Hydra and Spetses. These are the most culturally rich as well with centuries of naval (and not only) history and are all worth at least 2-3 hours stay.
  • Aegina is the famous “pistachio island”. In fact, the word for pistachio in greek is literally “Egina’s nut”. You will see them all over the island, and they are considered some of the best in the world.
  • Hydra island is the famous island where this holywood movie was shot back in 1957.
  • Spetses island and its surroundings are famous for being the greek tycoons’ Mediterranean heavens, with many of the richest greeks actually having villas in the area.
  • There are not that many accessible beaches in those islands and your tour operator might choose to let you swim in just a random bech somewhere which is usually even better as these are the most magical ones.
  • If you have more time than just a day trip from Athens, I highly recommend you stay 1 night in Hydra or Spetses as they are both super cute islands and are ideal for a weekend stay.

Mediterranean & Greece

Our Mediterranean land tours and small ship ship cruises transport you to destinations filled with colorful contrasts and discoveries both mythic and epic as you explore throughout these treasured lands.

Mediterranean and Greece Escorted Cruises

  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to the Mediterranean and Greece

A swoon-worthy Aegean Odyssey aboard the Wind Star yacht blends ancient with modern in a kaleidoscope of discoveries... go back in time in Greece, seeing antiquities in Athens and Mykonos, the playground of the rich and famous... Delos, holiest of all Greek sanctuaries, and the ancient caldera of Santorini, the precious gem of the Aegean... and much more as you deeply explore this cultural treasure chest.

Sicily... rich with the gifts of civilizations that have come before....

Blessed with a long, rich heritage that dates back to some of Europe's earliest civilizations, Sicily retains many vestiges of the cultures that have come and gone here throughout the centuries – Greek theatres, Roman villas, Byzantine art, Norman cathedrals, Moorish markets, Baroque churches. Among the treasures you'll encounter are Siracusa's Greek Theatre, Ear of Dionysius, and 3rd-century Roman amphitheatre; Ortigia's Theatre of Apollo and Baroque Duomo; the Baroque gems of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Noto; ancient Ragusa Ibla; the capital, Palermo, and its Palazzo dei Normanni; and traces of the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines in Taormina.

Bonifacio, Corsica

Discovering the medieval harbor of bonifacio on the island of corsica.

Tucked between soaring chalk-white limestone cliffs, the island of Corsica's tiny, fjord-like harbor of Bonifacio is only accessible to small ships and private yachts like the one you'll be sailing on. And your entrance into this spectacular harbor – and the historic 12th-century city it welcomes you to – is nothing short of magical… so be sure to have your camera ready! Once ashore, you can hop aboard Le Petit Train for a ride to the area of the town's walled citadel, built during the middle ages; wander a maze of medieval lanes; stroll along the bluff overlooking the harbor; or explore the former barracks of the French Foreign Legion.

Tauck Exclusive – Sistine Chapel & Vatican Museums after-hours

Explore the treasures of the vatican museums and the sistine chapel... without the crowds.

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the Popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular Biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

Evening at Library of Celsus, Ephesus

Special dinner with chamber music at ephesus' library of celsus.

Although the ancient city of Ephesus, in what is now Turkey, was originally built by the Greeks in the 10th century AD, much of the ruins you'll see at the site today date to the city's Roman period – like the famed Library of Celsus, constructed in the 2nd century AD to memorialize a Roman governor of Asia. Only the facade of this remarkable building has survived, but restored and re-erected, it is a stunning example of Roman urban architecture... and the amazing nighttime setting for a special evening featuring an al fresco dinner with a chamber music orchestral performance.

Fairmont Monte Carlo

A lavish retreat in a jet-setters' playground.

Fairmont Monte Carlo hotel is a unique, four-star luxury resort set in the heart of the Principality of Monaco, between the Mediterranean Sea and the legendary Monte-Carlo Casino – a prestigious destination where the international elite gathers, providing a harbor for the most beautiful yachts, and home to some of the world's most celebrated events... including the Grand Prix and the Monaco Yacht Show. Immerse yourself in the beauty and sophistication of this world-class destination at this world-class resort.

Small is big... onboard and ashore.

Smaller ships mean bigger experiences. Our small ships are big on individualized service, special touches and comfort, making you feel like a welcomed guest the moment you come aboard. Intimate spaces invite conversation or quiet contemplation as you like. Whether you're inside your cabin or out on your deck, ocean views beckon with adventures yet to come.

Because of the size of our ships, we're not restricted to commercial routes or large ports. We're free to follow the fish, not the fleets. We dock in places where you can get lost in the moment and not in a crowd. We delight in sharing spontaneous moments, up-close discoveries, personal connections and unforgettable treasures, making each moment memorable and uniquely yours. Sailing Greece - Santorini to Mykonos

Great country, excellent tour leader but very poor comfort...so think about it twice before taking the tour, little space in a boat, no real shower...and I won't comment the toilets. ..and in august, it's very windy so you will never be able to relax in the deck..just watch the others being sick...Just so you know.....but the country is nice and worth exploring.

Outstanding organization. Amazing visits to the islands, each unique. Daily very helpful briefings.with island info, and great links sent to us, highlighted and enhanced the odyssey. Skipper highly experienced, congenial, friendly and always ready to answer our questions. Flexibility with departure, according to our needs and the daily activities. Great recommendations for dining, museum visits, extra excursion options. As a native English speaker living in Germany I did luck out with a marvelous lively mix of native speakers on our boat. I celebrated my birthday with this energetic group. The trip surpassed my expectations. I highly recommend this trip.

Outstanding Service! Excellent communication throughout the process, from booking to final checkout. Even in the single instance when weather did not cooperate and forced to cancel a sailing activity, the team helped finding and booking a good alternative. Great hotels and highly professional local services. Perfect if you are looking for a fun, stress-free, fully organized vacation. Beats the crazy self-planning/booking/coordination hassle many times over.

We had a wonderful time visiting Greece. Dilimar from Travel Zone was great to work with from the beginning and very accommodating when I asked for a couple of changes to our Itinerary. The only complaint that I have is after we arrived, we found that our tours in Mykonos and Santorini were rescheduled on the last day instead of the first day. If they had been scheduled as originally planned, I may have revisited some of the places that we stopped at. All in all though Travel Zone did a great job. Nice hotels, all pickup and drop offs on time and the tour guides at each stop were excellent.

Bewitching Greece with All Inclusive beach stay Tour

Bewitching Greece with All Inclusive beach stay

The best part of the tour was the communication with Rose, Wendy, Sam and Alberto. The promptness, clarity and helpfulness in their communication was impressive. Their role in organising transport etc was commendable. Many good wishes for their good work! My suggestions for some other aspects: 1. If a person opts for a group tour, at least inform them in advance that it will be not be a group tour if it so happens, rather than leaving it to them to discover when they find themselves alone on reaching the destination. 2. Select your hotels carefully keeping in mind that your customers are paying you money to have an enjoyable tour experience that a tourist looks for. If you give a hotel which is located at a completely secluded place and does not offer even the basic facilities, it spoils a tourist's experience to a large extent. 3. Prepare a standard guiding document for your various tours, like many good tour companies do. This type of document includes helpful suggestions on what to expect, what to pack, what kind of weather, what precautions to take, currency suggestions, location and shopping scenarios etc. If you have a ready and comprehensive document like this, you can share it with all your customers for a particular tour well in time. This will avoid their having to ask many questions individually. Good luck. Madhavi

This may seem odd but this review is actually in advance of our trip. We plan to travel in Nov ‘21 and booked early in the pandemic. As you can imagine there have been many questions and the need to communicate across time zones. In most cases our one question became several questions via successive emails. Each time we have received quick, thorough responses. We really appreciate their professionalism and responsiveness.

Greece Island Hopper Tour

Greece Island Hopper

The Greece Island Hopper was my first group travel experience and I had an unforgettable time!! This trip highlights Athens, Mykonos, Ios, and Santorini. Our tour guide, Keira, was the best of the best and so knowledgeable about each city. She took us to and recommended so many hidden gems within each city and I saw so much more in such a short time than I would’ve been able to on my own. It was such a nice change to have all the transportation, activity, accommodations, and logistics taken care of—we could all focus on bonding with our group and getting to know the beautiful cities. I also will say that for the price, I think this trip is excellent value! Overall, I had an amazing time and cannot recommend this experience enough. I will definitely be booking another Tru Travels trip.

What people love about Athens Santorini & Mykonos Tours

Loved this sailing adventure and plan to do another one in the near future. The Captain Marius was excellent with a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of sailing and taking care of his passengers. Our group gelled well and we all had fun swimming, eating on board and going out to dinner and playing cards. I would definitely do this adventure again

Our tour continues as we head to some of the more desolate landscapes of the island, typical of the Dodecanese. Rocky hills, barren soil and promontories jutting into the sea creating dozens of coves and bays making up an intricate coastline.
