M25 Roadworks

The following roadworks have been reported by various highways agencies and official transport sources.Click on a roadworks item to view more details on the traffic map.

The M25 is the largest ring road (motorway) in the UK. It was originally proposed in the 1958 Buchanan Report on Motorway Development and the first section opened in 1975. It was completed in 1986 and it encircles London, connecting a number of major cities and airports, including London-Heathrow and Gatwick.

Since its opening, the M25 has been plagued by traffic congestion and accidents. In 1997, a section of the M25 was nicknamed "Britain's busiest stretch of road" due to the level of congestion and the number of accidents. As of October 2020, the M25 has seen over 1,860 serious accidents and 47 fatalities in the past five years. Despite these figures, the Department for Transport report that the M25 has seen an overall decrease in fatal and serious collisions since 2005.

Latest live M25 traffic news

Live m25 traffic reports, plus the latest news on m25 accidents, delays and congestion.

M25 map

The M25 is quite possibly the most notorious motorway in the UK. With 117 miles of potential for congestion, roadworks, lane closures, delays, accidents, and incidents, London’s orbital motorway can prove utterly chaotic and unpredictable, especially during the rush hour, so it pays to plan ahead as much as you can with traffic updates. Fortunately, we’re here to help.

We’re not just making this up - a study conducted in 2017 recorded the average speed of traffic on the M25 at just 25mph - making it one of the slowest motorways to negotiate in the UK. A study in 2020 also estimated that over 170,000 vehicles use the western section of the M25 each day.

Smart motorway

With these kinds of numbers, it probably comes as little surprise that journeys around London on the M25 are all too frequently frustrated by hold-ups and delays. The experience is no doubt worse for commuters, who have to endure the reports of M25 closures and accidents almost daily as they check their phone or listen to the radio during breakfast.

As a result of its popularity, the M25 has been consistently widened since it was completed as a three-lane orbital road in the late 1980s, but even the widest six-lane-per-carriageway sections can struggle to cope with the volume of traffic at times.

Scroll down to view all the latest traffic information on the M25 via our tailored Twitter feed, which pulls live information and updates from the Highways Agency, police forces and other traffic alert feeds. We’ve also got a a useful list of the motorway’s 31 junctions and some interesting M25 key traffic facts...

Live M25 Traffic updates

M25 history

The idea of a London orbital road can be traced back to the 1930s but it wasn’t until the 1960s that moves were made to actually construct the road that would become the M25. The M25 was born out of the London Ringways plan which marked out four ring roads around the capital.

Ringways 3 and 4 were built in the early 1970s. The first section was started in 1973 between South Mimms and Potters Bar and this would go on to become M25 junctions 23 to 24 as the roads were integrated into the modern M25.

Motorway

The M25 first opened to traffic in 1986 as a complete ring road for London but traffic levels exceeded those for which it was designed almost immediately and in 1990 the Secretary of State for Transport announced plans to widen the whole road to four lanes. Traffic continued to increase and road works to widen the M25 have been an almost constant companion for motorists using the road ever since.

There was slow moving traffic on parts of the M25 in Surrey on Monday morning as a section of the motorway closed over the weekend for maintenance reopened.

Tailbacks were reported between junctions 9 and 10, closed over the weekend, and on the A243 and A3 - near both junctions.

London’s orbital motorway, the busiest in the UK, was closed over weekend between Junctions 9 and 10 for maintenance.

National Highways said it made “good progress” on installing a new gantry and a new gyratory bridge on a section of the motorway.

Diversion routes tool cars on a 19-mile journey on A roads, crossing from Surrey into London’s Ulez area, though National Highways has assured drivers “no enforcement action will be taken” against those who follow official routes.

We’re finishing our live reporting on the M25 motorway closure.

Motorists still urged to visit Surrey despite M25 closure

Motorists are still being urged to visit Surrey this weekend despite the closure of the M25 motorway.

“Surrey is an enormous county so please carry on as you are,” National Highways project manager Jonathan Wade told BBC Radio Surrey.

He said the impact from the motorway closure was expected to be “fairly limited to certain areas”.

Pinned post: M25 closed in both directions between Junctions 9 and 10 - mapped

Map below shows section of M25 motorway that is closed until Monday morning.

Official diversion routes this weekend

Clockwise diversion for all but over-height vehicles:

  • leave M25 at junction 8, A217 (Reigate)
  • follow the A217 London, Sutton, (A240) Kingston
  • after 3½ miles turn left onto the A240 Epsom, Kingston
  • after 3 miles at the Esso roundabout, turn right onto the A24 (A240) Kingston
  • continue for 3 miles and at the Tolworth interchange turn left onto the A3 Portsmouth, Guildford
  • continue for 9½ miles to the M25 and re-join the motorway at junction 10

Anticlockwise diversion for all but over-height vehicles:

  • leave M25 at junction 10 to join the A3 towards London
  • after 9½ miles at the Tolworth interchange leave the A3 turning right onto the A240 Epsom, Reigate
  • continue for 3 miles to the Esso roundabout and turn left onto the A240 Reigate
  • continue for 3 miles then turn right onto the A217 Reigate, M25
  • after 3½ miles turn left to re-join the M25 motorway at junction 8.

Drivers using the signed diversion route won’t be subject to any Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges that may usually apply. The Ultra Low Emission Zone will remain in force on all other routes in London across the weekend.

Traffic flowing fairly smoothly early on Saturday

The key junction on the M25 closure diversion is the A3-A240 interchange at Tolworth in southwest London, travel correspondent Simon Calder reports.

It is a large and complex junction that is normally busy with local traffic and many bus services as well as vehicles joining and leaving the A3 trunk road between London and Portsmouth

Early on the first morning of the closure, traffic was flowing fairly freely. But the diversion route passes close to Chessington World of Adventures, which is expected to be very busy over the weekend. The RHS Garden Wisley, close to junction 10, is open as normal.

Motorists who decide to take the train instead between London and Portsmouth will find that the main railway line is partly closed due to Network Rail engineering work, with rail replacement buses running. There are also rail closures between Reading and Guildford, and between Guildford and Ash.

Traffic on the rest of the M25 is likely to be much heavier; for example motorists from Birmingham or Oxford taking the M40 to London may decide to head for Gatwick via the northern and eastern sections of the M25, increasing the distance covered by almost 100 miles.

Drivers urged to pack extra food and drink if planning to travel on M25

The RAC advised motorists to avoid travelling if possible and pack extra food and drink if they plan on using the M25 this weekend as stretches of the motorway shut for the entire weekend.

Alice Simpson, RAC breakdown spokesperson, said: “As this next M25 weekend closure immediately follows major national rail strikes which could see many more people take to the roads, it could be up to six days of disrupted travel for London’s drivers.

“The closures also coincide with the retrofitting of new emergency areas on all-lane-running stretches of the M25, meaning delays are likely between junctions 5 and 7 in Surrey and Kent and junctions 23-27 in Hertfordshire and Essex.

“With weekend temperatures reaching 25 degrees or even higher, it’s likely that routes around the 23-mile diversion will be busy as people make the most of the fine weather and jump in the car for day trips.

“Anyone heading to Chessington World of Adventures, which is close to the official A3 diversion route, should expect delays and pack extra food and drink in the event they’re on the road longer than expected.

“Holidaymakers heading to Gatwick or Heathrow should leave an hour earlier than usual and allow plenty of time for parking and security checks.”

Could the work overrun?

Most unlikely, says travel correspondent Simon Calder. The project bosses are well aware that finishing before the Monday morning rush hour is essential.

There are a series of milestones place to make sure the M25 is open for business at the start of the working week.

Last time the work was completed, and the M25 reopened, eight hours ahead of schedule.

ICYMI: Why is the M25 closed again this weekend and how bad is the traffic?

“Only travel if necessary”: that was the message from National Highways ahead of the second weekend shutdown of the M25 .

A 10-mile stretch of London’s orbital motorway closed between junctions 9 and 10 , southwest of the capital, from 9pm on Friday 10 May until 6am on Monday 13 May 2024.

London travel news LIVE: Trains stopping again at East Croydon after controlled explosion of suspect package

LIVE – Updated at 20:42

Commuters faced major disruption in the rush hour after trains were unable to stop at East Croydon due to a suspect package.

Police dealt with the incident at the station and carried out a controlled explosion.

Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink services have all faced disrupted in the East Croydon area.

Trains were able to stop again at the station shortly before 6.30pm.

Meanwhile Motorists have faced delays of up to three hours after a lorry fire on the M25 sparked huge traffic jams stretching for 11 miles.

At around 1.30am on Friday a lorry carrying a load of metal sheeting caught fire on the M25 clockwise. 5 units and a specialised water carrier from  Kent Fire and Rescue Service responded with the blaze being extinguished at around 3am.

Although the fire had been extinguished the lorry's cargo remained extremely hot and lane restrictions remained in place.

Two lanes on the clockwise carriageway between junction five, near Sevenoaks in Kent, and junction six, near Godstone in Surrey , were closed.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix said two lanes were still closed as of 11:38, despite one being briefly reopened, but "severe delays" remained.

See below for the latest updates.

Hour delay as lines reopen after ‘trespass incident’ on London Victoria to East Grinstead service

National Rail said: “Earlier this evening, a trespass incident was reported between Hurst Green and East Grinstead.

“All trains were stopped in the affected area, but lines have now reopened.

“Teams are working hard to get back to a normal timetable, but there have been delays of around 30-60 minutes. These are starting to reduce.

“Some late-running trains will be revised, and will only complete parts of their normal journeys, or will be revised to stop at fewer stations en route.”

Trespassers cause delays on London Victoria to East Grinstead line

National Rail said: “A trespass incident has been reported between Hurst Green and East Grinstead.

“All trains have been stopped in the immediate area, and staff don't have an exact estimate for any delays at the moment.

“To avoid the affected part of the network, trains which are still heading towards East Grinstead will be diverted away from the route, or will finish their journeys at Oxted, and return north from there.

“Unfortunately, staff are currently unable to confirm any direct onward transport from Oxted.

“Because of this, Lingfield, Dormans and East Grinstead are not being served.”

Severe delays on all Overground trains to Richmond

Transport for London is reporting a circuit failure is causing severe delays and cancellations on all London Overground trains to Richmond, Clapham Junction and Stratford.

Met Police statement on controlled explosion at East Croydon station

“Members of the public were evacuated and safety cordons were put in place while specialist officers assessed the item.

“As a precaution, specialist teams have conducted a controlled explosion at the location.

“This incident has now been stood down and enquiries remain ongoing.“

Office worker ‘jumped out of skin’ after hearing ‘almighty bang’ as police carry out controlled explosion at East Croydon

Simon Bates, an office worker, posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Looks to have all blown over now in East Croydon.

M25 Information

M25 Traffic Roadworks Information and Updates

M25 Traffic is mobile friendly. Redesigned to work on any device as many of our users are on mobile or tablet devices

  • M25 Roadworks

Welcome to the roadworks section of M25 Traffic.

In the roadworks section we feature news and updates about current and planned roadworks on the M25 motorway .

You can also visit our " accidents and incidents " section for information about accidents and incidents on the M25 causing delays today.

So, if you are looking for information about roadworks you have come to the right place.

Roadworks are one of the main causes of congestion, delays and holdups. In recent years there have been extensive road widening programs on the busiest sections of the motorway which has lead to long delays.

As the M25 motorway is one of the busiest roads in Europe, roadworks can cause long delays to drivers especially at peak periods, and on the busiest sections of the motorway.

Our main source of news and updates about roadworks is from Traffic England which is the government department responsible for maintaining the roads and motorways in England, so our main source is an official, reliable one.

Latest M25 Roadworks News & Updates

Below are featured 8 of the latest roadworks updates.

Our search page features all M25 roadworks information and updates . We have dedicated sections and pages about, incidents , roadworks and maps .

Roadworks Info

The main source of our roadworks information is Traffic England, formally the Highways Agency, which is the government department specifically tasked with maintaining England's roads. This is therefore usually one of the most reliable sources of roadworks updates.

Each roadworks report has:

  • Report title
  • Date Released or updated
  • Category or Source

The roadworks update title is a brief summary of main facts.

The remainder of the report is the detail of when the report was released or updated and details of what the roadworks are, where they are, and how long they are expected to last.

How any accidents on the M25 are affecting speed of traffic flow

M25 Traffic now features real time traffic flow information from Google maps which will show how current accidents are slowing traffic speed.

Using the traffic flow map in conjunction with our traffic news helps to gauge the affect any accidents on the M25 are slowing down traffic.

We see reports of accidents on the M25 most days. Our aim is to feature all the current accident reports from Traffic England as soon as they are reported.

You should never drive and text at the same time. This creates a massive risk of a traffic accident to you and others around you.

Be alert, be aware, take care. Be safe.

You should never drive and use your phone at the same time. Have a passenger check our latest news for you.

On any single day you can find information about both current and planned roadworks so that you are aware of possible delays and holdups on your journey.

As a major motorway, and a very busy one, we often feature dozens of up to date reports and updates and you can find all of them in our central search news page.

This page highlights up to eight of the most recent and latest reports.

Our search page enables you to search by category and narrow your search down to specific junctions and specific words such as "clockwise or "anti-clockwise" which can be very useful.
