One of my personal favorites when it comes to small travel trailers is the Scamp 13 Standard Trailer because of its super short length, lightweight design, and affordable price point.  

But there’s a catch if you want this trailer to sleep four, as you have to option the trailer without a bathroom.

This is because the front of the 13-Foot Scamp Trailer can either be optioned with a convertible sofa that converts into bunk beds or a wet bath. 

But if you choose the wet bath, the only place to sleep in this small camper is the convertible dinette booth that can only sleep two.

If you can camp without a bathroom though, you won’t find a smaller or lighter travel trailer that can actually sleep four campers at a time.

As this roomy travel trailer has a front full bed, a large convertible dinette booth, and rear bunk beds.

Giving this small camper the ability to sleep six campers at a time, which is pretty amazing, considering this trailer is only 21 feet long.  

And thanks to the trailer’s slide-out, the inside of the camper has a roomy feel inside, allowing four people to comfortably move around without bumping into each other.

There are lots of small travel trailers that have a dry weight of less than 3,000 pounds. For this list, I found a dozen of the best options, based on features, layouts and more.

Most of the travel trailers on this list are hard campers, although some have slide-outs or pop-up rooftops.

The iCamp Elite has a funky, retro interior design with wallpaper and high-grade plywood cabinetry that is finished with semi-gloss PU paint for durability and style.

I am having trouble deciding from a travel trailer to a RV. I am lookong used and am feeling a little intimadated to whole Idea of living in and owning a travel house. Wade i think you look a lot like my cousin Braden. Uncanning. With that said what would you recommend? I am a woman, in my 40’s, with a disability looking for a home. I dont need super luxury, but I also dont want something that could potentially be a money eater. I have a variety of tools and sure i can use them and figure things out, but even i know when i shoukdnt or its beyond my knowledge. When i go camping its usually in my car or a tent. What wpuld you reccommend? Are there easier and harder options? Can i paint this rv purple and green if i would like? I have so many questions. I will keep on researching more and more i kind of liked the van home my cousin guy had two yeara ago, althoigh i never dis get to see the inside. I dont know whether to buy a dolly and tow my car behind or buy a new car to tow the home. The 4 cylinder vehicle i have may not be enoigh. I just hope it is big enough for 2 and maybe a dog. I may want to make dinner for aomeone someday. I may want to have my family visit., althoigh theu may have to find their own place to sleep. Wow i better stop, i have no idea.

What about cassita and scamp? They are 13-17 feet and feature full bath, kitchen, dinette, full bed, etc

Is there anything <3,000 that sleep 3 adults and has a bathroom? We’re a family of 4 with 3 wanting to visit the 4th at college for weekends. Car is a Chevy Traverse with max tow of 5,000-ish but understand we want to be well under for the trailer. Lots of options to sleep 2.

Wade You should look at RKS Offroad. I visited them a month ago. They are a startup trailer company out of souther California and they are doing some great things. Hopefully they make it to Florida.

Try looking at the e-pros by Thor Flagststaff and their companion G-Pro. Many of them are under 3000 pounds and come with all kinds of bells and whistles

Dry weight does not include the cargo or the weight of the passengers. Isn’t that to be considered when towing capacity. Our towing capacity is 3,500 lbs. we were told to add our weight and everything in the truck bed and stowed inThe camper such as food appliances and dishes.

Hi Pam, your right. Dry weight doesn’t include the cargo or the weight of the passengers. It must be factored in. If you’re vehicle is only able to tow 3,500 lbs, then you definitely need to make sure you’re under that with the passengers and cargo included.

Airstream took its old, classical aesthetic and flipped it around on its head with the Airstream Basecamp . Relaying their classical aluminum exteriors to the interiors is a joy to look at, if you dig shiny walls and a clean, metallic look. The massive, panoramic windows on the front are a huge plus, especially if you take it off-road and find some incredible scenery.

This RV packs everything you need for going off-grid, though you may want to upgrade the underbelly with something a little more resilient to off-road adventures. A standard wet bath, two-burner stove, dining area, bed, counter space, and storage are all packed into a 16-footer.

2. r-pod 171C

Forest River took the classical, DIY teardrop exterior aesthetic and amped it up a notch with their r-pods , which are really just giant teardrops with more of the features on the inside rather than the outside.

The bathroom is a wet bath, but it’s large enough that you don’t have to sit on your toilet to shower.

The refrigerator is large for the size of the camper, with a large, convertible dinette and a sideways queen bed on the opposite end.

Since r-pods went with the Azdel walls, they are far more durable and long-lasting, with less preventative maintenance throughout the seasons.

3. Rockwood Geo Pro G15RD

Another Forest River entry on our list is the Rockwood Geo Pro, which sounds pretty bad to the bone for a camper title.

This particular model features a sideways bunk house in the rear and a convertible U-dinette, both of which sleep up to four. It’s an excellent option for short-term family adventures, whether you’re bringing the kids or rocking some big dogs.

The U-dinette fits square against the bunks, with the remainder of the kitchen appliances and furniture continuing with the flow of the U-shape around the RV.

This makes for more room in the center, where all the day-to-day work and activities take place. It’s a smooth idea that really works, keeping you from feeling constrained when indoors for long periods.

4. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 12FBX

This Jayco Jay Flight has the interior feel of an RV much larger than typical travel trailers under 3500lbs. The interior is designed with a corner bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe, and a parallel queen, the latter of which features plenty of room to move around.

As a lightweight travel trailer, that feeling of size is an impressive accomplishment. The bathroom is sizeable as well, though Jayco left out a sink next to the shower. It’s a dry bath as well, which is often hard to find in a travel trailer within this class.

8. Venture Sonic Lite SL150VRB

This little camper features a massive rear bathroom, which takes up roughly 1/3 of the entire RV. However, the Venture Sonic doesn’t skimp on the remaining 2/3 either.

The remaining space is utilized very well, with a parallel Murphy bed (which features a free-standing table for dining), a two-burner stove, sink, and 8 ft³ fridge.

Thanks to the Murphy bed and lack of a traditional dinette, the space in the center of the camper is large and comfortable.

There’s also plenty of cabinetry and storage, with a passthrough on the exterior, a row of overhead cabinets over the stove, and another row of overhead cabinets over the bed.

9. Wildwood 164RBLE

One of the most attractive qualities of the Wildwood 164RBL E is the bright and cheery interior. Stepping inside is like stepping into a breath of fresh air, even if it’s not a very large travel trailer. As you can see in the above floorplan, a lot is going on inside as well.

The 11 ft³ fridge is a huge benefit, especially if you need the extra food for a lot of boondocking or going off-grid.

The bathroom takes up the back 1/5 of the RV, though there’s plenty of room to keep it a dry bath with a sink, toilet, and sizeable shower.

Sometimes simple is better and, when it comes to travel trailers under 3500lbs, it’s often a good idea to simplify things. The Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB is both simple and streamlined while retaining a full-featured RV status.

There are some interesting things to get used to in this model, and some that RVers may not like.

You can literally eat lunch underneath a driving rain, and this camper isn’t known for leaking either. There are limitations on storage and holding tanks, but this remains an excellent off-road adventure choice for single occupants, couples, and small families.

12. Coachmen Clipper 15CBH

Coachmen Clippers make for excellent travel trailers under 3500lbs. Unlike most of the other campers on our list, the floorspace on the Clipper is a sideways L-shape, like an elongated hallway that ends in a sizeable bathroom and a very large shower.

The bathroom occupies the corner space while the two bunkbeds take up the opposite corner. All of your typical kitchen amenities are present making this a very complete travel trailer under 3500lbs.

The dinette is a convertible bed with a large shelf above, maximizing the room in the RV while retaining some extra sleeping and storage space.

The Little Guy Mini Max is one of two campers on our list that approach the true teardrop form (the other is next on the list).

The Little Guy is known for its high-quality interiors, with attention to the finest details throughout. The light tans make for an excellent interior aesthetic and, despite its size, it features all of the major amenities of a traditional camper.

The wet bath is large enough to accommodate both the toilet and shower so as long as you’re not against wet baths it’s a great option.

The entire galley is in the front, which is an interesting change of pace. One of the things people really love about this camper is the number of hidden storage places scattered throughout. If you need to store it, there’s a place for it.

14. Aliner Ranger 12

✅ Very easy to set up as a hybrid pop-up camper

⛔ Dinette bed is not the most comfortable, an understandable lacking in a minimalist design

The Aliner Ranger 12 is another of the teardrop-esque travel trailers under 3500lbs on our list of 15.

Its unique, triangular shape is definitely a conversation starter in any campground get-together. However, it’s more of a pop-up camper, in reality, than it is a teardrop.

The interesting triangular roof creates a spacey-feeling interior that other campers in this class struggle to achieve. However, as cool as it looks, you’ll have to go with an exterior shower or only camp at campgrounds where showers are available.

15. KZ Sportsman Classic 180RBT

Last on our list of travel trailers under 3500lbs is the KZ Sports man Classic 180RBT. Unlike the other 14, this RV saves space, and expands it, in an entirely different way, by utilizing fold-out tents for beds. Not only does this save space, but it also opens up the interior to a higher sleeping count.

Thanks to three fold-outs, the interior space is enormous for a travel trailer this size. There’s a full, corner dry bath, a sizeable dinette across from a long bench seat, a fridge, a pantry, and a full kitchen amenity range on opposing walls.

There are also plenty of storage options, though this RV uses a large storage door on the exterior, rather than passthrough storage.

Are Travel Trailers Under 3500lbs Big Enough For Families?

Some of them are, depending on your definition of family size. Some travel trailers under 3500 lbs will accommodate a single-child family, while some will accommodate two. If they are particularly energetic and rambunctious, it may take a class-A motorhome to accommodate them.

It’s safe to say that maybe one or none are fit for extremely long-term family use. Homeschooling kids in an Aliner Ranger 12, which will sleep up to 4, is doable but not the most envious task in the world.

Most extended warranties start after the regular warranty ends BUT the prorated amount includes the time under the regular warranty. Our original warranty was for 12 months and we got another 12 month extended warranty. After a year we traded for a larger trailer and only got 1/2 of the cost of our extended warranty back, even though it wasn’t going to kick in for another few weeks.

Which of these under 3500 lbs come insulated for cold temperatures 5,500 ft above sealevel? I only have a Subaru Outback turbo that can haul up to 3,500 lbs

I have been looking for an ultra lite trailer under 3500lbs that I can tow with my Nissan Frontier. I would prefer one with bunks and no bed. Also I would like a slide out. Double axle would be great also, but that may be asking for too much.

Good information for one looking for a small trailer. With all of my research, for one looking for a light trailer, the LANCE 1475 is a good one deserving of review. it’s more $$$$ than the afore mentioned unit’s, but it’s really nice.

This was a great grouping of nice smaller trailers! The size is just what an older couple like my husband and I are drawn to. The biggest surprise was the Puma ultra light. It didn’t really stand out from the exterior, but the interior was surprisingly good looking and very functional. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one before. The Casita, Oliver and Nest are also stunners IMO, but I bet you will have to put your name on a waiting list to get one. I recently camped next to a young couple and their dogs staying in a Wolf Pup that was probably even smaller than the 16FQ and it had a rear entry. It had the same big picture window on the passenger side though. That seems like a really great detail to carry across their floor plans. Thank you for the ‘eye candy’. Happy Travels from Michigan

In our north Seattle neighborhood, I can count at least six travel trailers parked on sidewalks, in driveways and in alleys on any given day. And every.single.time, I’m jealous.

They all look cool and cute at the same time, and lead me to think, What a great way to guarantee idyllic road trips with the entire family.

(Insert laughter here for anyone who understands that “idyllic,” “road trip,” and “family” don’t often occupy the same sentence, even if a billion-dollar trailer is involved.)

If you, like me, are smitten with these tiny trailers (aka towable RVs), read on for what to consider when buying one and some suggestions for the best small travel trailers on the market today. Even a smaller camper these days might offer everything from bunk beds to solar panels, an entertainment center to USB ports. 

Each of these small trailers is a great option for small families of four, providing a space to call your own when you’re on the road or at the campground, and is small enough that it doesn’t require an enormous parking area to store it at home. Don’t worry about maxing out on square footage. These small camping trailers are creatively designed with different floor plans to provide plenty of room to spread out and enough space for your gear.

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Family Travel Trailer

Any investment of this size – even though the trailer is small, it still costs a chunk of change – is worth a few hours of research and comparison. Here’s what to look for when you’re considering which is the excellent choice for your family. 

Where You’ll Sleep 

First things first – where will you lay your head to rest in your shiny, new travel trailer? You’ll need a comfortable sleeping capacity for four people. Depending on the age of your kids, you may do well with bunk beds and a master bedroom with a queen-sized bed for parents. Some trailers offer an additional sleeping space (like a convertible dinette), which can work for small families but can be an inconvenience for a large family.

How You’ll Live 

Due to its smaller size, the layout and floor plan matters when picking the best small RV for your family. You’ll want a layout that feels comfortable to everyone in your family so that you’re not starting out from behind when taking road trips in this new (and fun!) way. 

Just like when searching for a home or remodeling, list out your priorities. What are the extra features you can’t live without? Do you need a convertible dinette, a queen bed, a wet bath or dry bath, a larger living area, large windows? Be honest with what you absolutely must have, what you’d like to have but could live without, and what you definitely don’t need. This is the space you’re going to return to between adventures with your family, so make sure it’s a space you love. 

Type of Bathroom

While you likely won’t get a full bathroom like at home, a wet or dry bath at least keeps you from having to run to the outhouse or campground bathroom while you’re on your trip. A wet bath features a shower with a toilet and sink in the same space (meaning everything in the room gets wet). This compact design is popular with small family travel trailers (such as the Airstream Basecamp) and teardrop trailers. 

A dry bath has a shower in its own enclosure, separate from your toilet and sink. Many travel trails, as well as fifth wheels , offer this option, which is more like what you’re used to at home. Keep in mind that the wet bath is more prevalent the smaller the travel trailer.

Features & Upgrades 

Just as when you’re buying a car, you’ll have many options for upgrading the standard features of a compact RV trailer. Among the many extras are:

• All-terrain tires or traction
• Solar panels
• Additional batteries
• Larger appliances 
• Tinted or frameless windows
• Air conditioning 
• Backup camera 
• Storage cabinets
• Full bathroom

Think carefully about how you will be using your travel trailer. If it’s just for camping one season a year, how many bells and whistles do you need? Or, if you’re an avid road-tripper for three or four seasons of the year, consider tacking on a few extras that will make you more comfortable (and happy) in the long run.

Weight of The Trailer 

Don’t start your shopping and comparison process for the best RV option for your family without knowing the maximum towing weight for your tow vehicle. An owner’s manual will have that number. Then you’ll need to add the weight of the small camper, the trailer hitch, and an estimate of the things you’ll be carrying inside your trailer, like water and gear (a good rule is to use 250 pounds per foot of the actual trailer, not the hitch, to determine if your setup falls within the gross vehicle weight rating). Knowing your vehicle’s limits is essential before making your final trailer choice.

They’re budget-friendly. .

The best small campers celebrate their diminutiveness. They have smaller interior space, but, like we mentioned above, they’re still a great option because the companies have thought outside the box in terms of fitting in the features you need. The more you pay – typically up to $50K – the more features you’ll get, but it’s really a personal choice. You’ll still have a fantastic vacation with a lightweight travel trailer on the smaller, simpler end – and save money for other vacation fun. 

They’re Convenient and Easy to Tow.

Depending on what you’re driving as a tow vehicle, pop-up campers, teardrop-shaped travel travelers and the like are easy to pull. Think about those huge RVs you see pulling into the site next to yours at the campground or the trouble folks are having trying to park much larger travel trailers. There are a few types of camping styles that may align with you. To get you started, below are a few examples of them.

Local camper at nearby campgrounds:

Camping locally may not seem glamorous, but you will likely get more nights under your belt in the RV, making more memories with your family. There are a lot of perks to local camping. First, you will spend more time out of the car and relaxing. You will also get to know your local campground and plan your trips to take full advantage of the events, activities, and amenities it offers. You will make friends and meet families who do the same thing, building a little community for your camping lifestyle. Many RV parks also offer storage options, so you may be able to store your RV at the campground and pull it into your reserved site when needed. During times of high gas prices, this is a huge benefit. You will also be closer to home, allowing you to work and camp at night. This aspect is my favorite benefit of local camping.

Below are some things to keep in mind when camping locally. First, you will likely be spending more time in your RV. Camping locally means you will have less desire to explore the areas outside the campground. Finally, while a smaller RV may make more sense for a cross-country trip, the additional room in a larger RV with a spacious floorplan may create a more enjoyable experience for your family at your local campground.

Vacation Camper:

Maybe you want an RV to hit the open road for a road trip or take an annual vacation once or twice per year. When you start researching RVs, it is easy to fall in love with the large and roomy floorplans, bunk rooms, outdoor entertainment centers, etc. However, consider your needs to tow it around if you primarily plan to use it for a few extended trips. Also, if traveling to that exciting destination is part of the lure of RV camping, consider that you will visit the sites and places around the campground and may spend less time there. A smaller, nimble RV may be the right fit for you.

Another thing to remember about size is that some state and national parks limit RV length. You may have found that perfect 32-foot travel trailer, but when you go to book your stay at Acadia National Park, they may not be able to accommodate it. Therefore, reviewing the campgrounds in the places you plan to visit is a good idea before deciding on an RV. That may help you make an informed decision.

Full-Timer:

Okay, so you decided to abandon the masses and head out on the road to travel for an extended period. Finding the right RV for this situation may require you to make several compromises. You will want the space of a large RV, but you also will want to remain agile.

Will you be taking kids? Do you want to convert a dinette into a bed day in and day out? Will you be homeschooling or working remotely, and do you need a dedicated space for that? You will need to consider storage, cooking, sleeping, and on-and-off grid camping. This book will not guide you through all your decisions, but hopefully, it will give you some things to think about as you plan for this lifestyle change. Full-time RVing can be an experience of a lifetime.

Selecting an RV style

Once you have a general idea of your camping style, you can start thinking about the needs (not only wants) you have for your RV. Also, remember that most RVs can do just about anything you want in the camping world. Therefore, by choosing the best RV for the 90% of the time you will be using it, you will more than likely be able to use it for the 10%. 

A plan of action to lead you into the next section, searching for the RV, starts by focusing on a few key things: style, size, weight, tow vehicle, and floorplan. If you work through the planning process following this order, you will better understand what to look for in an RV. 

Motorized RVs:

If having an engine in your RV is a priority, this is your category. Motorized RVs come in different shapes and sizes, best described as Class. They are also your most expensive options, and if looking in the used market, you will have the added responsibility of inspecting the engine components. I do not want to discourage anyone from going this route, but be aware that you should do a lot of shopping around to find the right RV because your upfront investment is more substantial.

Towable RVs

The most common entry point into the RV lifestyle is through the towable RV door. It is true in the new RV market and the used market. Do not think of a towable RV as a lesser alternative to motorized RVs. They offer many benefits over motorized RVs at a much lower price point. With a towable RV, you can significantly increase your living space for only a fraction of the cost of what it would take to do so for a motorized RV. 

You also benefit from having a vehicle available to explore your surroundings near the campground. The towable market, because of its popularity, has countless options. Because of this, you will be able to find the perfect RV for your camping style. On one end of the spectrum, you have the option for a huge two-floor park model; on the other end, you can get a small teardrop camper that’s towable by a small SUV. There is a good reason why so many people camp with a towable. It is simply the best fit for the vast majority of campers.

For this article, we will focus on towable RVs since they are the most common types of RVs that first-time campers choose. They’re also very family-friendly and have many different floorplans to accommodate kids. The most common type of towable RV is a travel trailer. The next most common is a fifth wheel . Also, if you plan to carry large equipment, like ATVs, motorcycles, or golf carts, you may want to look at toy haulers.

Tow Vehicles

Your tow vehicle is one of the first things you should consider when purchasing an RV. Your tow vehicle will be the limiting factor for the RV you choose. If you don’t decide first, the RV will choose for you (your RV does not care about your budget). Next, you will need to look at the trailer’s weight and size it up to the tow vehicle. Each trailer will have a dry weight (how much it weighs empty) and wet weight (maximum amount of cargo plus the dry weight).

RVs come in different shapes and sizes with an endless array of floorplans to fit everyone’s needs. With so many options, It’s no wonder why it’s challenging to find the perfect one. However, certain features lend themselves well to camping families. So let’s take a look at some of them.

Sleeping options for kids

The first thing we’ll discuss is sleeping capacity and options. The perfect family RV will have a dedicated space for everyone. If you focus your RV choice on ensuring that every family member has a bed, you’ll be able to narrow down your RV types. The absolute best RV option for a small family of four is an RV with bunk beds . This setup provides a main bedroom for the parents and a separate bed for each kid. If you choose a different style RV, you’ll likely need to convert a sofa or dinette into a bed, which can be a huge inconvenience for a large family.

There are two main styles of bunk bed RVs. First, smaller RVs will have bunk beds integrated into the living area. This setup is a good option if you’re looking for a smaller and lighter RV. In addition, some bunk bed setups provide more privacy than others. The other better option (f you want a dedicated kid space)  is a bunk room, which provides a cordoned-off space for the bunk beds and is usually in the rear of the trailer. The benefit of a bunk room is that it separates all sleeping areas from the main living area. Bunk rooms are especially nice if you want to use the remainder of the RV while the kids are sleeping.

A notable feature that you’ll surely find when searching for an RV is slideouts. A slideout is a section of the room that extends out when camping but retracts when traveling. Some RVs will have upwards of five slides, but as the number increases, so does the weight of the RV. Many bunkroom models will offer a slide in the bunkroom, creating a larger space for the kids. Others will have a slide in the living room, master bedroom, or both. I recommend visiting an RV dealership to get a hands-on feel for the RV’s roominess.

Bunk rooms provide plenty of room and storage space for toys and clothes. Many older children will also hook up their video game systems and use the bunk room as a gaming area. This extra space is a great way to keep the floor space in the rest of the RV uncluttered.

If an RV with a bunk room is not in your budget or size requirements, you can still achieve some of the above with a bunk bed area. Most bunk beds are tucked away in the RV and provide a little enclosed area for the kids. Younger children enjoy having this dedicated area. It’s a good idea to make this area kid-friendly and fun. My daughter decorates her bunk area and stores all her stuffed animals there. She loves to hang out there and watch a movie, and play. The best part of a bunk room is that kids can have their dedicated entertainment center while the parents can relax in the main living quarters.

Moden bunkhouses are often designed with this in mind. For example, many bunk areas will have separate storage compartments or shelves built-in, allowing kids to keep their items organized. Many will also have extra features like in-wall USB ports so kids can charge their tablets or phones.

Regardless of what style of bunk bed setup you choose, it’s smart to have a predetermined plan for where the kids will play and hang out. Keep this in mind when searching for RVs. When shopping for an RV, you will have many different floor plans with bunkhouses to choose from

Parent privacy

If you’re a parent, you know just how precious a little bit of privacy is. For your sanity, keep this in mind when RV shopping. The main bedroom will become very important to parents who need some space to unwind and find some quiet. A key feature you’ll want to look for in the main bedroom is a door that closes. Some RVs will have a main bedroom with a curtain that closes it off from the rest of the RV. While this is fine for many people, a sliding door or one on hinges is ideal. It helps seal noise from the rest of the family and provides you with your own space at night or if you want to relax and read a book.

RV main bedrooms usually offer a queen-size bed and are typically found in the front of the trailer. However, some larger RVs may provide a king-sized option. Since most RVs are standard widths, most King-sized bed options are typically only available in bedrooms with a slide. In addition, larger bedrooms typically provide additional storage, which is nice if you’ll be camping for longer periods. However, a queen bed is usually more than adequate for most camping trips .

Kitchen and dining

Another consideration you’ll have when RV shopping is the dining area. You typically have three main options to choose from: A traditional booth-style dinette, wraparound table, or free-standing dinette. All options are capable of accommodating a family of four. Deciding between these options is a matter of personal preference. However, depending on the RV model you’re looking at, you may not be given the option to choose. If given a choice, I prefer a free-standing table because I use it for work. It allows me to reposition the chairs and is a bit more comfortable. However, many people with large families prefer the large wraparound table since it provides more room for the entire family. The most traditional option is a booth-type dinette. This dining setup is nice since the booth typically folds into an extra bed, providing more sleeping space if you have friends or extended family members camping with you.

The kitchen is the other thing to keep in mind when selecting an RV. If you plan to do a lot of cooking in the RV, which is a great option for saving money, then make sure you choose an RV layout that meets your cooking style and has enough space. Also, don’t forget to look at the refrigerator. Some RVs have large residential-style refrigerators that provide plenty of space for your family’s food. Others will have smaller ones, and a very small RV may even have a dorm-sized fridge without a dedicated freezer. For most families, a moderate-sized refrigerator will easily accommodate a family of four.

The other important feature of a family RV is the bathroom . Keep in mind the whole family will be sharing this. Most campers will have a full-sized bathroom, but they may be tiny in a small camper. The free-standing showers are usually found in larger full bathrooms. However, some parents may prefer the tub option for small children. In the smallest RVs, you may have a wet bath, which means that the shower, sink, and toilet are all in one area. However, this wouldn’t be very common if you’re looking for a family RV and are usually only found in a Class C motorhome or a teardrop trailer- not travel trailers and fifth wheels.

Nearly all trailer manufacturers will provide different models with options for camping families. Below are the best options for various RV sizes and types. Next, we’ll take a closer look at a variety of RVs for families. 

Best Small Travel Trailers

2023 jayco jay flight slx 7 184bs.

One of the most popular models of small RVs is the Jayco Jay Flight series. The 184BS offers a queen-sized bed, bunk beds, a well-equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with a tub/shower combo in a super small package that some larger SUVs can tow . It’s amazing how they managed to fit everything into this small space. So if you’re in the market for a small travel trailer that offers enough sleeping room for a family of four without needing to convert a sofa or dinette to a bed, then this is one of the best options on the market. The 2023 model features a super clean-looking white interior design.

While you lose some features typically found in a larger travel trailer, like an oven, and a larger bathroom, you more than make up for it with size and weight. New in 2023, Jayco added a roof-mounted A/C, which is an upgrade over the previous wall-mounted unit. Not many bunk bed RV models have as small a footprint as the Jayco 184BS. If you currently own a vehicle that can tow this, it’s an excellent choice for a travel trailer if you are not looking to upgrade your tow vehicle.

It’s hard to compare a small travel trailer like this to its larger-sized competition. However, there are some things you should be aware of if opting for a small camper this size. The living and sleeping areas are all within the same space, with the main bedroom only separated by a curtain. There is no privacy curtain or divider for the bunk area. Additionally, the only seating will be the dinette, so don’t expect to spend a lot of time in the RV with the entire family and not feel cramped. It’s a great option for families that need a small RV and plans to maximize their outdoor space while using the RV primarily for sleeping and eating.

However, one great option for a small camper trailer like this is to consider adding an RV awning room , which adds additional living space outside the entry door. Adding this accessory is one of the best things you can do to increase the space in your small RV. The Jayco features a 10-foot awning that will allow you to easily add this feature.

While the 184BS is small, that’s what makes it special. It’s one of the best small RV models available on the market. If you’re looking for a comparable RV, you may want to check out the Geo Pro 20BHS.

2023 Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH

If you’re looking for a small Bunk Bed RV with a little more room than the Jayco 184BS, the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH is a great option. While the Winnebego is more expensive, this particular model is a good choice if you need a little more room. With the 2100BH, you get some extra room provided by the single slide for the dinette area combined with an excellent build quality. Also, while this model is a little heavier than the Jayco, you can still tow it with a capable SUV or pickup truck. In 2023, Winnebago gives you the option of swapping out the dinette for an EZ Glide Sofa Sleeper with a hidable table. I’m not the biggest fan of a dinette, so this change is a nice one to see.

Another great option about the 2100BH is the ability to customize it for your needs. For example, if you don’t want the dinette, you can swap this out for an EZ Glide Sofa Sleeper, which will provide a sitting area for the family to watch a movie on the included LED TV. Of course, the RV also has some pretty cool standard features, including a wireless phone charger, Wifi Prep, and heated and enclosed holding tanks (great for cold-weather camping and preventing your water tank from freezing) with the Comfort Tech Package.

While the 13.5 BTU  air conditioner should be more than enough to cool the camper, you can upgrade to a 15K BTU unit if you plan to camp frequently in a very hot climate. You can also upgrade to the Explorer Package, including a roof-mount solar power prep, larger off-road radial tires, propane heating system, heavy-duty axles, and suspension, among other upgrades.

Best Lightweight Travel Trailers (mid-sized)

Coachmen freedom express 292bhds.

If you’re searching for a new travel trailer that is lightweight and offers a bunk room, the Coachmen Freedom Express Travel Trailer 292BHDS is an excellent option. This lightweight trailer can be towed by some half-ton pickup trucks. The trailer also features a large slideout in the main living area, giving you more room for the family. Like most RVs this size, you get a full kitchen, full bathroom, and entertainment center. You’ll also enjoy the wraparound dinette, capable of comfortably seating the entire family. Parents will like the master suite sealed off by sliding doors. It features a queen size bed and plenty of storage for clothes.

The bunk room does not have a solid door but utilizes a curtain. The curtain may be one of the downsides of this model. However, the room does have three beds, which is great if your kids want to bring their best friend along for a camping trip. There is also a ton of shelving in the bunk room, which will help keep all of the kid’s toys and items neatly organized.

The 2100BH has a 19′ awning, plenty of cargo storage, and a full outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator and sink. The RV also has a heated and enclosed underbelly and large windows and is prepped for solar panels.   

2022 Keystone Outback 291UBH

While we’re still waiting on the specs for the 2023 mode, the 2022 Keystone Outback 291UBH could be one of the lightest moderately sized travel trailers, with premium features, on the market today. The 291UBH offers a unique design unlike any other travel trailer on the road. The trailer offers a rear bunk bed setup with larger bunks than the traditional twin style and a closable door. The bunkhouse area is perfect for small kids and provides plenty of room to make the space their own.

Innovative storage is a hallmark of this unit. There is a hidden pantry behind the entertainment center, which provides a large amount of storage for food and supplies. Most people won’t even realize it’s there until they open it and will be in awe of the amount of space. In addition, the unit has a single large slide in the living room, opening up the trailer for plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining.

The 291UBH offers a full kitchen inside and a refrigerator and stove outside. The bathroom has a roomy stand-up shower and plenty of room. The main bedroom offers a queen-sized bed with easy access to under-bed storage. This area also has a dog door and can serve as a kennel for small dogs.

The trailer also offers a lot of premium features. It’s prepped for solar, has power stabilizing jacks, a water docking station, on-demand Water Heater , solid steps, and a lighted power awning. The remarkable aspect of this trailer is that they deliver all of this with a GVW of 8,200 lbs, which is towable by most half-ton trucks.

Best Premium Travel Trailer

2023 rockwood 2911bs.

The Rockwood 291BS, built by Forest River (one of the leading RV manufacturers), is an absolutely beautiful bunkhouse travel trailer. The trailer offers two slides, one in the living room and the other in the main bedroom. There is also a separate bunkroom that sleeps 3 with a closable door. The L-shaped kitchen maximizes cooking and food storage space and is decorated in light colors that contribute to the RV’s roominess feel. Large families will also love the wraparound seating area for dining, which converts into a sleeping area for the occasional extra guest.

The main bedroom is super spacious and provides an east-to-west facing bed, made possible by the bedroom slide, providing a wonderful oasis for parents seeking privacy. There are two entry doors to the main living area and the bedroom.

The bathroom is compact but doesn’t feel too cramped. In addition, it offers a standard Showermiser Water Saving System and Maxxait ventilation fan, which is usually only found in more expensive units. The unit also has a very convenient bike door, allowing you to easily store your bikes or larger equipment under the bunk without having to drag it through the RV.

Outside, you also get other premium features such as power-stabilizing jacks, solid steps, and an outdoor kitchen with its own awning. Found mostly on premium RVs, the Rockwood has a Quick Recovery Water Heater w/ Interior Gas/Electric Switches. This ensures you’re not wasting water waiting for it to heat up and allows for a long hot shower. Additionally, the RV controls use the OneContrrol Panel, which allows you to operate it with a smartphone.

2023 Winnebago Voyage V3538BR

The Voyage is one of the roomiest bunkhouse models available, offering three slides- one in the bunk room and two in the main living area. The kitchen takes advantage of this extra space by offering an island with a large sink. However, the RV is on the heavier side with an 11,000 GVR and may require a ¾ ton truck for towing because of the extra room.

In the typical Winnebago style, you have many opportunities for upgrades and customizations. For example, you can choose a larger residential-sized refrigerator, swap out the dinette for a free-standing table, or upgrade from a queen-sized bed to a King-sized.

This trailer also has a huge bathroom with plenty of storage, ideal for larger families. In addition, you have two entry doors, solar prep, power stabilizers (with optional auto-level), and solid steps. Inside, in addition to the furnace, you will also have an electric fireplace which provides a nice ambiance when relaxing and watching a movie. Like the Micro Mini, you can also upgrade to different packages, including the comfort tech package or the explorer package, providing more options for camping in colder environments and more rugged terrain.

Best Fifth Wheel

2023 jayco eagle 355mbqs.

While we generally focused on travel trailers for this article, we decided to throw in one of the best family fifth-wheel RVs. The Jayco Eagle 355MBQS offers a unique mid-bunk option for family camping, placing the kid’s sleeping area in the center of the RV rather than the back (one of its key features). This setup opens the entire rear of the camper for a living room and an extremely spacious feel. In addition, the Jayco Eagle has five slides in the RV, two in the main living area, one in the bunkroom, and another in the bedroom. This fifth wheel is the most spacious family RV reviewed here, offering lots of extra room.

The mid bunk room has a pullout sofa that converts to a bed, a top bunk, and a desk that can serve as a mobile office or entertainment center. Above the bunk room is another loft for kids, which the young ones will love. Finally, the main bedroom has an east to west facing bed, and with the slide, it offers parents an extremely spacious bedroom with tons of storage.

The dining area has a unique dinette hybrid booth with two free-standing chairs. You also have a 3-person sofa and theater seating, accommodating all family members for movie night. The kitchen is also very large and has a center island with a double sink. You will also get a full 21 CU FT residential-sized refrigerator.

If you’re a family with kids looking for a fifth-wheel trailer, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better layout than the Jayco 355MBQS. It’s ideal for families who spend a lot of time camping or full-timers.

This is so helpful as I am looking for a camper for a single person when I retire! Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

You might also include the NuCamp tear drops – Tab 320 clamshell or shower and the Tab 400 teardrop with full shower and toilet. These are a little shorter than the Little Guy Max.

Also Rove UltraLite 14FD (bare bones but very affordable)…and a little larger but still smallest for it manufacturer: the plush Lance 1475 with full bath-shower, sink cabinet and toilet.

They’re lightweight, affordable, and easy to tow, but they’re tight—often very tight—on space. Bend Teardrop is looking to change that with a high-roof small camper trailer designed to make teardrop life a little easier (and roomier).

The 6×12 Tall Boy is a unique animal. It’s definitely not a traditional travel trailer, but it’s not quite a teardrop trailer, either, even if it does closely resemble one. Think of it as a “teardrop-and-a-half.” In fact, Bend designed the Tall Boy with essentially the same “bones” as its stretched 6×12 teardrop model. However, the increased ceiling height makes for a more livable interior space that more closely resembles an ultra-compact travel trailer than a genuine teardrop. The scant 2,000-pound dry weight also ensures it’s easily towable by most mid-size cars, trucks, and SUVs.

Stepping through the full-size door reveals a generous six feet, three inches of standing room. Because the roofline doesn’t sweep down and back as aggressively as a traditional teardrop, most of the interior space features that same expanded headroom throughout. Across from the entry is a convertible sofabed lounge, making the Tall Boy a far better solution for WFA (work-from-anywhere) digital nomads looking for a mobile live-work teardrop that doesn’t require working on their laptop from bed. After dark, the couch is converted to twin bunk beds, which, when coupled with the permanent sleep space at the rear, provides enough space for four adults. Reading lights, a small TV, and a rooftop vent are also standard. Like a traditional teardrop, there’s not much more to the interior. It’s purpose-built to be clean, functional, and cozy. (Bend Teardrop recently started selling mobile saunas , too, and there’s a whiff of that aesthetic inside the wood-heavy Tall Boy.)

Campers will find the galley kitchen around the back of the trailer. Popping the tailgate reveals a similarly clean space that’s intended for owners to build out as they see fit. The stock Tall Boy comes with a sink basin, plus three tiers of shelving and a large countertop. Appliances, like compact camp stoves , portable fridges, and the like, are up to the owner’s imagination. One cool feature is a speakeasy-style passthrough pocket door that allows anyone outside to grab snacks or a beer for those inside who might not feel like putting shoes or pants on.

While the interior and galley might seem pared-down, Bend does outfit the stock Tall Boy with a solid list of features typically sold as optional on its other models. A two-inch hitch receiver, brake system, and rear stabilizer jacks are all standard. The power system includes an AC shore power hookup for in-town camping at full-service campgrounds, while the included 200-watt rooftop solar system keeps things humming while venturing off-grid.

Spec your own Tall Boy teardrop travel trailer

Bend debuted a prototype of the Tall Boy last fall, but the good news is that it’s available now with a starting price of $18,995. Ticking all of the option boxes — including the onboard battery system with inverter, climate control module, side-mounted exterior awning, and shore water hookup — pushes the all-in price up a few grand. It’s definitely pricier than a traditional tear drop camper.
