Mastodon, Judas Priest Plot Fall Tour

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Two monsters of metal will hit the road together this fall as Mastodon  will open for Judas Priest  on an 11-date tour. The trek will kick off October 16th in Paso Robles, California. Tickets go on sale to the general public on July 31st.

In addition to their tour, both Judas Priest and Mastodon have plotted their own fall tour plans. Judas Priest will branch off on their own North American trek this autumn before heading to Europe for a month’s worth of dates. Check out the metal act’s itinerary  for full dates. Meanwhile, Mastodon will mix their solo headlining gigs with the Missing Link Tour, a trek co-starring Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity. Check Mastodon’s tour site  for those gigs.

Mastodon and Judas Priest, as well as Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity, will also be on hand for Knotfest  on October 24th in San Bernardino, California. Slipknot’s annual fest will also feature Korn, Ghostface Killah, Mobb Deep, Bring Me the Horizon, Suicidal Tendencies, Gwar, Helmet and many more acts over its two days at the San Manuel Amphitheater and Festival Grounds.

Mastodon’s Bill Kelliher Talks Judas Priest Tour, Guitar Lessons + More

Mastodon are finishing out their 2015 on a high note, getting a chance to tour alongside rock icons Judas Priest . We recently had a chance to chat with Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher about the trek and also delved into the guitar lessons he's been giving on tour, the band's standout 2015 video for "Asleep in the Deep" and their inclusion in an episode of Game of Thrones and on the show's mixtape earlier this year. Check out our chat with Mastodon's Bill Kelliher below:

Bill, you're getting a chance to tour with Judas Priest. I know it's early, but how's it going so far?

We played a bunch of festivals with them before, I mean, it's Judas Priest, one of the greatest all time metal bands and they're still going strong. They f--king sound great, kill it every night. Put on quite the f--king metal show. Rob Halford is one of the best, if not the best, in the genre. Everything has been amazing. All the crew and the bands, the fans. It's been a great tour so far, but it's only been a couple of shows but sometimes when you go out with bands like Iron Maiden or Metallica or Slayer or Tool, sometimes the crowds are really there to see the headlining band and you don't get too many of our fans. On this tour, it wasn't like that the first show in Paso Robles. There were a lot of fans out there screaming for us and wearing Mastodon shirts. So it was a good pairing, it was very cool to see that because we know how tough it is. You go out to see your favorite band and then some new band you've never heard of and don't want to care to see. But I think we've been turning a few heads and maybe making some new friends out there. It's been great. We're lucky to be here and we feel special.

You've mentioned the fact you've played festivals with them before. Now that you have more time, do you get a chance to sit down and talk to the guys and ask them the questions you've always wanted to ask?

No, not really. Like I said, it's been two shows and the first show there was a landslide or rockslide in California on the 5. They showed up super late to the gig. They had to get there 20 minutes before they were going to go on because all of the road issues and the night before last. I think we had to leave super early to get from Vegas to Sacramento. We had to leave right after the gig, so we haven't had that much time to bro down at all. I've talked to Richie Faulkner , the newer guitar player. I've known him from other bands and touring with him years ago when he was in his previous band so we're pretty good friends. We caught up for a second, but I haven't actually met Halford yet. I talked to the drummer for a little bit while we were in Vegas, he lives there. We were shooting the s--t. I don't know. When the time comes and we're comfortable and we can have a little conversation but it's not like I have a list of interview [questions] to give them I've been waiting for years. I kind of say whatever is on my mind I guess when the time comes.

I noticed you're giving some guitar lessons while on tour?

Yeah I've been doing that for about two years now. A few years ago I just started taking ... there's a lot of downtime on the road when you're backstage and it can drive you a little mad. I play guitar a lot. I try to, I'm just a better player from practicing. I had the idea that maybe someone would be [interested]. We do meet and greets. Kids come and meet you, we sign some stuff and I thought that was -- I think it's better to get a guitar lesson from me. Maybe they'd like to? I was very nervous about doing it. I was like, what if the person is way better than me? And they show me up? [laughs] It's been going really well. I get a few kids every day. I call them kids, sometimes they are older than me. Everybody is very serious and they just want to shoot the s--t and ask a few behind the scenes questions - it's about 50/50. Half talking and half discussing playing and styles and how songs are written and how the chemistry is in the band, who my influences were and how I go about writing a song. Sometimes it's technique. And sometimes someone will have a question about well, I've always wanted to learn how to play this or how does this click?

Guitar players can get into a comfortable plateau zone where you don't really feel like you're getting any better and you're kind of floating around and need a little something, stimulation and not everybody has time to go start a band or jam with someone else. So it's giving them the chance when we come into an area and pick my brain a little bit. It's a very comfortable setting, very relaxed. I find a room backstage every day and we sit around in a circle and just play guitar, talk and everybody seems to really enjoy it.

It seems like everyone has the meet and greets these days, but I think that's an extra special touch that you are adding to the concert experience that these people are getting. Curious, have you had anybody in the years you've been doing this that surprised you? Or maybe that you even picked up something from them?

Not really. They've been pretty much beginners. There was a couple of young kids who were really good, some people have had to show me how to play my own old songs. Which was funny. Or a dude will just jam out a Mastodon songs that are played the way they think they hear them, so it's kind of funny. We joke about it and show him how to quickly play it. It's more kind of my show and I kind of -- some dudes just want to jam a song with me. They're like, I know the solo to this sound and I'll play the rhythm part - I'm like, yeah sure.

I saw you've got The Sound and the Story for Fret12 for people who want to learn a little bit more. If you want to talk a little bit about that, how did it come about?

Jim Root from Slipknot , who is a friend of mine, he was talking to him and was like yeah you should really showcase these lessons and talking to fans and trying put a face to the mystery of Mastodon. Kind of reach out socially and what not, but he said, "Oh this might be right up your alley, here's the guy's number. You should call him up." They were touring there and the guy is up there in Chicago who is doing Fret12 stuff. Talking to him on the phone, I was a little nervous doing that too. I was like, "Well, what am I going to teach anybody?" He's like, "Believe me dude, people are going to want to hear what you have to say about writing songs. They're going to want to see how you play your songs." The songs I wrote I do an instructional thing like OK here's the song, play along to the music and then break it down, show you how I play it. I do a couple of simple little lessons at the end. It's very rudimentary. That kind of got me started on doing the lessons because I started getting better.

I never took any lessons in my life. I learned everything by ear and playing with other people. I don't know. I never had the money or the time -- my parents never took me to get guitar lessons. I feel like there's something to be said for that, doing your own style. Just trying to convey that into a DVD and it's my life story pretty much. Me just talking about myself and the ups and the downs, people can see I'm just a regular person just like them. Anybody who has the ambition to become anything, really in life. You can do it, or come very close. There's no secret, it's just getting out and doing it. People say, how did the band get so big? I say well, years and years of sacrificing a lot of things to jump into a van and start playing your music and working for nothing until you finally become something. Hard work. There's a lot of being in the right place at the right time. Ninety-nine percent of it is hard work, perseverance and not giving up. So I thought it'd be a cool platform to see if anybody gave a s--t about buying it, watching it and learning about me.

There's some great guitar work you've put in over the years. Is there a song that you feel you had a real tough time getting down and now that you've done it, you say finally!

A song like "Asleep in the Deep" -- not that it was hard, but it was just a different song. When I was writing that song, it was a different kind of sound than the typical Mastodon stuff and I wasn't sure how it was going to go over and I felt like it was stepping out on a ledge, branching out a little bit into something a little different and it turned out really good. We made a video for it. I can say that about all of our songs. They're all works in progress when they first start and it's ... I'm not the kind of songwriter who writes the entire song in a week. It's not like here's the whole song, it's more like I write parts. I write lots of parts to songs and usually one of them are beginning riffs, they're the meat and potatoes of the song and the hard part is getting ... I always write the middle of the song. I can never seem to write the ending or the beginning. That's the hard part.

You mentioned "Asleep in the Deep," one of my favorite videos of the year. Talk about that video, how it came together and your thoughts on the final result.

That was kind of an idea we had about, we all love animals and cats. I think we always kind of have these fantasies of, what do cats do when they leave and go outside and go do their thing? They probably chase birds, squirrels and anything that moves, scope around for food. We're just like, what if our cats had these separate lives? They went down into the sewers, met up with other cats and smoked cigarettes and played cards? Like they had their own little world. We started thinking about weird scenarios like that. The whole script of "Asleep in the Deep" came to fruition about your cat is just a regular house cat and then at night when you fall asleep, it takes off and goes meets up with his friends and goes out on some crazy quests and adventures and rescues these enslaved rats or whatever those things [laughs].

It's a trippy video, from the mind of Art Skinner who's in the other room right now here at the Warfield in San Francisco. It's just a bunch of psychedelic imagery, drugs and we didn't want it go be way off the wall like really bizarro because we get a lot of our humor out through our videos. The music is very serious to me, it's gotta be serious. You don't want to be taken lightly but a video i think we can always get away with something funny. If you don't have a great videos, there's so much competition out there you really gotta have something that's really standing out. That was our attempt at it.

You got a chance to do the Game of Thrones thing this year. "White Walker" was on the mixtape. Talk about your involvement.

I don't watch a lot of TV but when I first watched Game of Thrones , I didn't put it down for at least 4-5 episodes. I didn't go to sleep for a couple of days. I was just watching it every episode. It's like a soap opera that's got blood and sex, violence death and incest. It's like a car crash. I couldn't take my eyes off it. The acting is done real well. The direction and everything, so it was something I've always been attracted to as far as a TV series. When they asked us to take part in it we were like, "Oh my god, really? Yeah, we can be extras? Cool." Then they asked us to write a song, I don't know. It's a good thing we can do to be a part of. It's such a cool show.

I know it's one of the biggest TV series in our day, but it's still got that dark underground kind of not for everybody vibe. It's still very evil, people probably think it's some kind of crazy satanic cult. Keep your kids away from watching it with all the sex and violence. I enjoy it, we all think it's a great show. Great story and hopefully it'll continue to write music or do appearances. We love writing songs for movies and TV shows. I think that's real fun just to hear it. Big screen, and know that it's something a little different. Not just going on a record, it's going to go along with something else, a movie soundtrack or something.

You're a year removed now from recording Once More 'Round the Sun . I know you said a lot of things are works in progress. How do you feel about the album having some separation from recording it?

I don't know. I love it. I think it's a great record. I still don't have any problem playing the songs off it. We still have a few more songs that are on it that we haven't played live yet. I'm still a huge fan. I think we can still get a lot more mileage out of it. I'm not sick of it yet.

Favorite song to play live?

Yeah, the opener ['Tread Lightly'] is such an epic song. It's really a great opener, it starts the crowd out on a singalong and gets them very pumped up. We usually play that first. "Diamond in the Witch House" -- I really want to play that one, get [Scott] Kelly to come out and sing with us. He sings on it. All the songs I enjoy playing, because they're newer you know? When you're playing the same old songs over and over for 15 years, anything is a welcome change to play something new.

We saw the story about singer-bassist Troy Sanders' wife being diagnosed with breast cancer over the summer. Any thoughts you can share with us?

It's something that sneaks up on everybody. Cancer is one of those things where you need to keep trying to find some more research for it. No one really knows why. I can go on forever, you just never know. Holding a cell phone against your head for too many years and the radio waves, cell phone tower waves that go into your brain every day can cause your brain cells to start multiplying and going rogue, who knows? Cancer can be from anything, really. It's a cruel world we live in, it's part of being human and it's unfortunate when it happens to people that you love. All you can do is be understanding, be there for them and put your life into perspective as if it can end at any moment. Live it like it's your last.

You're touring now, but what's on the horizon at this point?

After the new year we're going to go home and take a well deserved break. Be with our loved ones and family. We'll try to convene early next year and start writing a new record.

Bill, thanks for your time.

Thank you so much.

Our thanks to Mastodon's Bill Kelliher for the interview. You can find the band on tour at these locations . The band's 'Once More 'Round the Sun' album can be purchased via Amazon or iTunes .

MASTODON GUITARIST SAYS JUDAS PRIEST IS NOT A HEAVY METAL BAND, BUT A CLASSIC ROCK BAND

  • January 8, 2019

Mastodon guitarist and singer, Brent Hinds, spoke in an interview with The Jasta Show and claimed that Judas Priest is not metal band.

He said that “Judas Priest is more of a classic rock band.” Here’s the statement:“Oh my god, I’m the worst at interviews. Most of the time I have to call the journalists and beg them to let me do another interview.

Man, I try my hardest not do them wrong. I try to avoid them like the plague, honestly. But I do them from time to time, especially for good friends around Christmas time. That’s the problem right there with interviews – they’re taking my s–t out of context a lot.

I don’t think… I wasn’t meaning any harm by it. I was just stating my opinion, man, of it. For me, my opinion is that Judas Priest is more of a classic rock band.

*starts singing, You’ve Got Another Thing Comin *, “You know, these songs are like a couple of chords chunked together. More of a classic rock…”

Back in March 2017, he talked with The Jasta Show and said:

“Judas Priest is not metal, people, it’s rock ‘n’ motherf–kin’ roll! Who in their right mind that has a brain in their head thinks that Judas Priest sounds like a metal band?”

On Judas Priest’s popular song Painkiller , he said:

“To me, that’s just hard rock ‘n’ roll. I’m not buying into that. I heard all Judas Priest songs, I went on tour with them, I know them all personally, they’re amazing people.

They truly think they’re metal gods, like Rob Halford’s like, ‘I’m a metal god.’ That’s weird to say, but whatever. [Chuckles] Like, just don’t say it, it just makes you sound weird when you say it.”

I’ve seen Mastadon, I’ve heard their albums, and of course, Rolling Stone loves ’em; they’re the most important metal band in history over there…and I can’t remember one lick of their music….wait….nope…nothing, nada, zilcherino….a giant blank…*which takes us to a whole other category: the nothing IS something.. * Nothing IS a noun…Thus, nothing is not nothing. You also get nothing from nothing, which is something even though it’s nothing.

Shannon, have you been drinking again? 😉

Topic, I should’ve said…topic…and here’s another topic: the notion of deathless death….death never dies…My tombstone is gonna say, “I knew this would happen.” The earth will die, the sun will even die….the music will probably die one day….death never dies though…death lives on…but how can death live?

You have been drinking! 🙂

Doug, if I was drinking I would be talking about singing When Death Calls to somebody…lol…this here is sober.

You know, Doug, if none of this means anything, if life is pointless…then life being pointless also is pointless and doesn’t mean anything.

De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da, that’s all I want to say to you! 😉

You know, I bet Ed gets this stuff.

NOW FACING ONE ANOTHER THE STAND OFF EATS AT TIME THEN ALL AT ONCE A SILENCE FALLS AS THE BELL CEASES ITS CHIME…. What a maroon, who the hell cares what that idiot said? Everyone now thinks that everything is subjective. What next? SIN AFTER SIN is classic rock, RAM IT DOWN is heavy metal and TURBO is glam rock. This is the band that turned a Joan Baez song and a FLEETWOOD MAC song into bad ass metal anthems. JUDAS PRIEST has over 100 good songs. They have more individual good songs than LED ZEPPELIN, DEEP PURPLE and BLACK SABBATH. JUDAS PRIEST took chances and each album sounded differently , unlike METALLICA, AC/DC and IRON MAIDEN. I love JUDAS PRIEST. JUDAS PRIEST is the best classic rock band ever. JUDAS PRIEST is the best metal band ever. JUDAS PRIEST is better than the NY YANKEES. JUDAS PRIEST is better than the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS. JUDAS PRIEST is better than prime rib. JUDAS PRIEST is better than Sam Adams. JUDAS PRIEST is better than Stephen Hawking. JUDAS PRIEST is better than THE GODFATHER. JUDAS PRIEST is better than Shannon Mehaffey. JUDAS PRIEST is better than St. Patrick’s day. JUDAS PRIEST is better than Eddie Murphy. JUDAS PRIEST is better than BREAKING BAD. JUDAS PRIEST is better than going to the beach. JUDAS PRIEST is better than Paul Stanley rapping.

Agree with all except Paul Stanley rapping….

Is Judas Priest better than Billy Joel’s “Pressure?” as good? Is Judas Priest better than 1982’s year in music? (think about this…”Pressure” was the single, that is crazy good for music). Is Judas Priest better than Van Halen 1? as good? not quite as good? (not sure about this one). Priest took all the best elements of classic rock, added some nice progressive rock seasoning, and then up ratcheted the intensity to 9.992 (ten would’ve caused it to lose its musicality) to create probably the best formula I’ve ever heard. They could write as good as Kiss and play as good as Deep Purple…and they had this relatability that only comes from extensive touring. That sure as hell will never happen again. This Mastadon fella seems pretty insecure with himself to have to puff himself up like that. Ok, sure, Brent Hinds, Mastadon is metal…here’s some alfalfa sprouts.

I don’t agree with the prime rib!

I love “Pressure!” But is JP better than Billy Joel? Or The Police? Hmm…

Dodging the Van Halen 1? that’s the stickler.

I love JP as much as anybody, but they’re not better than VH1! (The band, of course, not that useless network!) I’m still stuck on the JP/prime rib debate! 😉 LOL!!!

Umm….What the hell is he talking about?

I haven’t posted here in a long time, life gets busy – but I read this article and couldn’t let it go. Brent Hinds – I love Mastodon, but I’m stunned how out of touch you are with Judas Priest’s place in the history of metal. Maybe it’s because of the time period of your own place in the genre, where musically metal is more “extreme” than it’s ever been – but Priest are commonly regarded as one of the founding bands of the heavy metal genre. Do you regard Metallica as metal, or classic/hard rock? I’ve spoken with teenagers currently who don’t think of Metallica as metal vs the “hardcore” metal they listen to today – but in the mid 80’s Metallica were considered extreme – on the far edge of what “metal” was for its day. I’m talking about “Kill ‘Em All” through “… And Justice For All”, not “Load” through “ReLoad”. Listen to some early Priest and put it in the context of other rock music of the mid to late 70’s, it’s a similar story – they were ferocious, I dare to say ahead of their time – and were leading the charge through the 80’s and into the 90’s. I don’t think it’s fair to redefine what constitutes what was metal 30-40 years ago through the lens of what it is today. If anything today I would call Priest and the likes of Iron Maiden “classic METAL” vs classic rock – the foundation upon which thrash and other subgenres of metal were built. Judas Priest are pretty much at 50 YEARS on the scene of heavy music (vs the featherweight pop of any given decade). BOW TO THAT, RIGHT NOW.

That a metal band can find mainstream success with a simplistic, anthem-like song such as “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” should not exclude them from being “metal”, but celebrated as proof that the genre is valid and has the capability to reach more than a core “extreme” audience. That song still kicks ass nearly 40 years later, and is a gateway to deeper more aggressive tracks such as “Electric Eye”, “The Sentinel”, “Screaming For Vengeance”, “Painkiller”, and more. Saying “Painkiller” isn’t metal? It’s about the most pure “metal” song Judas Priest has ever written. I headbanged myself into literal pain riffing to that song on my guitar as a teenager. How the flying f#@%! is that not what metal is all about?

I saw Mastodon live for the first time last summer, and it was my hands down favorite show of the year. I really believe Mastodon is one of the great bands of this era – but understand the significance of what bands like Judas Priest hold in the history of metal and give respect where it’s due. They ARE Metal Gods, and deserve the title. Rob Halford really is one of the greatest voices heavy music has ever experienced, and we all benefit from the trail they’ve blazed. Long live Judas Priest, long live Mastodon, long live HEAVY METAL \m/

ABOUT JUDAS PRIEST

Judas Priest, a powerhouse in the world of heavy metal has spent over 50 years crafting a legendary career. Emerging from Birmingham in 1969, their impact and influence in the genre remain unparalleled. The band originally solidified their place in music history with iconic albums like 'Sad Wings of Destiny' and 'Sin After Sin' known for metal anthems like 'Sinner' and 'Hell Bent for Leather' while pioneering the leather-and-studs image now synonymous with the metal culture.

The '80s marked their pinnacle with classic albums 'British Steel', 'Screaming for Vengeance', and 'Defenders of the Faith', generating timeless hits like 'Breaking the Law'. Despite lineup changes and various challenges, the band's resilience remained unwavering. In 2018 Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, Richie Faulkner, Ian Hill and Scott Travis released 'Firepower' which soared as one of their most successful albums, backed by an extensive global tour

Amid health setbacks and the pandemic, they persevered with a 50th-anniversary tour and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Preparing for the release of their 19th studio album 'Invincible Shield' and a headlining performance at the 2023 PowerTrip Music Festival, Judas Priest's unwavering dedication to spreading their heavy metal legacy continues, promising to rock on into 2024 and beyond.

Metal Nexus

  • JUDAS PRIEST & SABATON Bring Metal To Minnesota [Review & Photo Gallery]

The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota welcomed the heavy metal iconic band  Judas Priest . Fans packed the venue to see a band with more than five decades of history that laid the foundation for a genre that refuses to die. The metal brigade from Sweden,  Sabaton , once again opened up the show for the metal legends.

Sabaton  has been touring with  Priest  across the United States on the past few tours. The band is working hard to break through on American soil and based on the number of Sabaton shirts and people singing along to every song, that hard work has paid off. Lead vocalist Joakim Broden took control of the stage the moment he held the mic as he led a barrage of metal music that fans soaked up. Guitarists Thobbe Englund, who just returned to the band after leaving the in 2016, and Chris Rorland worked off each either in perfect unison while the rhythm section of bassist Par Sundstrom and drummer Hannes Van Dahl, who was once again perched on top of a tank, provided the thunder that is required for their music. Opening with “Ghost Division” the band ripped through an impressive twelve-song set that also included “The Last Stand,” “Stormtroopers,” “Resist and Bite” and “The Red Baron.” The lyrical themes are all based on historical battles and stories of heroism. The band dressed is in fatigues with microphone stands that have rifles and infantry helmets on them. I’ve seen these guys numerous times and they deliver a great show every time.

The one and only  Judas Priest  took to the stage with the song ‘Panic Attack.’ It comes off the bands 19 th  album ‘Invincible Shield’ which was released a few months ago.  Rob Halford is the definition of a heavy metal singer and it is always an honor to see him on stage performing. It’s hard to believe he is 72 years old based on how strong his vocals were. He crushed though an eighteen-song set that stuck to the metal trademarks that they have encompassed for decades. His voice was great and he continued to hit the notes that have made him one of best singers in metal. The most obvious thing about a  Judas Priest  concert is the devotion the fans have towards them and the bond the band has created with the metal community. The second song of the set, the all-time great metal anthem, “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’,” showcased that intensity of that connection as band and fans became one. That vibe, with every person at that venue singing every single word and the music pouring off the stage, was a moment in time where the genre of heavy metal is defined. The same could be said during “Breaking the Law” and “Living After Midnight.”

I became a massive fan of the band with the release of ‘Screaming for Vengeance’ back in 1982 and then the follow-up ‘Defenders of the Faith’ in 1984. Along with Halfords vocals, it was the guitar duo of Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing that harnessed that metal power that got my attention. Sadly, neither one was on stage but just because the faces have changed, it doesn’t mean the music has. Richie Faulkner and Andy Sneap handled the guitar duties and both kept the sound true to form. Ian Hill on bass is the sole continuous member of the band and has appeared on every studio album. He is unassuming as he stands behind the guitarists but always lays down that low end so those dueling guitars can shine. Drummer Scott Travis has been a member of the band since 1989. He debuted on the album ‘Painkiller’ in 1990 and continues to be the powerhouse that keeps the band tight. Highlights for me included “Love Bites” and “Devil’s Child” while “Electric Eye” remains my all-time favorite  Judas Priest  song. I couldn’t ask for much more from another great show from Judas Priest . They played the classics, hit on some deeper cuts and then some of the newer material that shines right along side the vintage songs. Another great night of music and hopefully they come back in the very near future.

According to Setlist.fm , the setlist for the show was as follows:

01. Hellfire Thunderbolt 02. Strike Of The Viper 03. One More Shot At Glory 04. The Ripper (JUDAS PRIEST song) 05. Reap The Whirlwind 06. Night Crawler (JUDAS PRIEST song) 07. The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown) (FLEETWOOD MAC cover) 12. Breaking The Law (JUDAS PRIEST song) 13. Victim Of Changes (JUDAS PRIEST song)

14. Raise Your Fists

As previously reported, KK'S PRIEST , which features former JUDAS PRIEST members K.K. Downing (guitar) and Tim "Ripper" Owens (vocals),alongside guitarist A.J. Mills ( HOSTILE ),bassist Tony Newton ( VOODOO SIX ) and drummer Sean Elg ( DEATHRIDERS , CAGE ),and German/American metal legends ACCEPT will join forces this fall 2024 for a North American tour. Both bands are touring in support of their brand new albums, out now via Napalm Records .

The massive run will begin on August 31 in Los Angeles, California, visiting a slew of major cities in the USA and Canada — such as Toronto, Montreal, New York and Nashville — before coming to an end in San Francisco, California on October 7.

KK'S PRIEST 's first-ever U.S. headlining tour, which featured support from L.A. GUNS and BURNING WITCHES , kicked off on March 7 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and concluded on March 24 at Keswick Theatre in Glenside, Pennsylvania.

KK'S PRIEST 's sophomore album, "The Sinner Rides Again" , came out in September 2023 via the Austrian label Napalm Records .

KK'S PRIEST made its live debut on July 6, 2023 at Downing's KK's Steel Mill in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom.

K.K. formed KK'S PRIEST after JUDAS PRIEST turned down his offer to rejoin the band for their 50th-anniversary tour. It followed a couple of celebrated stage appearances, first with former MANOWAR guitarist Ross The Boss in the summer of 2019, then with a one-off lineup that included former MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson and former PRIEST drummer Les Binks later that year.

KK'S PRIEST released its debut album, "Sermons Of The Sinner" , in October 2021 via Explorer1 Music Group / EX1 Records .

Downing spent four months writing and recording "Sermons Of The Sinner" and, along with new ideas, he even resurrected a few archived riffs from the 1980s.

Downing was reunited with JUDAS PRIEST for a performance at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in November 2022 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

PRIEST received the Musical Excellence Award at the event, which honored Eminem , Dolly Parton , DURAN DURAN , Lionel Richie , Pat Benatar , EURYTHMICS and Carly Simon in the Performers category.

Downing left PRIEST in 2011 amid claims of band conflict, shoddy management and declining quality of performance. He was replaced by Richie Faulkner , nearly three decades his junior.

In 2019, Downing said that he reached out to JUDAS PRIEST about taking part in the band's 50th-anniversary tour but that their response was that they were not interested in including him in the celebrations.

In 2018, Downing revealed that he sent two resignation letters to his bandmates when he decided to quit JUDAS PRIEST . The first was described as "a graceful exit note, implying a smooth retirement from music," while the second was "angrier, laying out all of his frustrations with specific parties."

Downing later said that he believed the second letter was "a key reason" he wasn't invited to rejoin PRIEST after Glenn Tipton 's decision to retire from touring.
