The highly successful McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour — a series of 26 events across Alberta — will get underway on May 31 at Drayton Valley.

Open to any junior boy or girl born in the calendar year of 1995 or later, the Tour is entering its 19th season.

“It’s an excellent competition for both elite players and kids getting their first exposure to competitive junior golf,” said the Tour’s executive director, Dunc Mills, who has watched the Tour grow from nine events in 1996.

Alberta Golf (Calgary) –  Alberta’s Open for Summer Plan will allow the  McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour presented by Crowe MacKay  to run it’s full 25 event schedule across the province this summer. 2020 saw decade-high participation in the Alberta Golf owned and operated development tour and 2021 will be no different.

In year’s past junior tour registration has been controlled by each individual club, but in 2021 there was a new centralized registration through the  Alberta Golf Juniors  website using our new Golf Genius Software.

Alberta Golf’s Manager of Competitions  John Deneer  says the new registration process made it easier and more efficient for everyone involved and is excited to work with the host clubs again in July and August.

“We are very excited to partner with golf clubs throughout the province and continue to offer junior golfers in Alberta the opportunity to experience tournament golf, build their comfort and confidence in the competitive environment and gain a better understanding of the Rules of Golf,” said Deneer. “The tour is a great starting point for many of these young, talented and competitive junior golfers!”

McLennan Ross LLP  returns as title sponsor of the tour, Partner Tom Ross is proud his Alberta based law firm can support what this tour provides.

“McLennan Ross is proud to sponsor the McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour, which is in its 26th year,” said Ross. “Golf is a great source of fun, fellowship, and outdoor exercise (which we especially need right now), and it is also a game that helps build character.  The tour provides junior golfers a tremendous opportunity to learn, compete and develop as individuals through the game of golf, and we look forward to another great season in 2021.”

As always there will be proper age divisions and yardages that fit the appropriate age categories and the tour has a fantastic schedule with over 20 events all across the province with all clubs returning for the 2021 season.

Dunc Mills  has been the tournament director for all 25-years the tour has been operating and is excited to be back for his 26th season to create a fun, learning and competitive atmosphere for the junior competitors.

“I’m really looking forward to the 2021 McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour season,” said Mills. “With the huge jump in interest in junior golf last year, the Tour should be even bigger and better than ever this summer.  The tournaments are a great way for younger juniors to get their first taste of tournament experience, but also provide great competition on outstanding golf courses for older players as well.”

“This year alone we will have between 1,500 to 2,000 entries from 400 to 500 different players,” said Dunc Mills, who has been the Tour’s executive director from its inception.

“The majority are not elite juniors by any stretch. We get a lot of kids shooting in the 90s and some not able to break 100,” said Mills of the tour, which is open to juniors born in 1998 and later and will play 25 events at 25 different courses throughout Alberta.

Mills said the number of kids playing in the McLennan Ross Tour presented by Crowe MacKay has been steady with 50-60 entries for each of the 25 events they will play at 25 different courses throughout Alberta.

But it’s still a long way from the ‘heydays’ of junior golf, when Mills said they averaged 120 kids an event.

“Back then junior golf was spurred by the Tiger Woods factor when golf in general was getting all of the publicity that Woods generated.

“But we’re very stable and part of that is the generational echo where you’ve got kids that went through the boom of junior golf and now have kids of their own playing.”

Other factors for the resurgence in junior golf are highly successful junior programs at courses like the Derrick, Glendale, Goose Hummock, Fort-in-View and in particular Canada’s largest junior academy at Crossfield’s Collicutt Siding where, last year, they had 1,000 kids participate and had to order 300 dozen hot dogs.

The entire population of Crossfield is just 2,800.

Over the last half dozen years, Mills said he is seeing more and more junior girls competing.

A big reason for that is the Future Links Girls Club Edmonton which has been driven by Enid Botchett, a volunteer for Golf Canada and Alberta Golf and a former governor with Golf Canada and Alberta Golf.

This year the program has 83 girls registered.

The first two Edmonton-area McLennan Ross events are Whitecourt on June 28 and Barrhead on June 29.

Edmonton’s Kaiden Nicholson, 16, will try and repeat his win in last year’s Barrhead stop.

“The McLennan Ross is a really good way to start. It gives us juniors an opportunity to play in a tour with a real tournament feel,” said Nicholson, who also won last year at Stony Plain and Goose Hummock, won his age group at the Tour Championship at Wolf Creek and lost in a playoff to Ethan de Graaf in the Jiffy Lube/Melcor Edmonton Junior at the Edmonton Country Club.

Not surprisingly Nicholson, who is still trying to decide which sport he wants to play – golf or hockey – was the McLennan Ross’ Order of Merit leader.

“Almost all of us got started through the McLennan Ross Tour.”

De Graaf is another top Edmonton junior.

“Dunc’s a really great guy and he sets up a good event for kids to start,” said de Graaf, maybe forgetting for a moment that, at 16, he is still a ‘kid’ too.

Like Nicholson, de Graaf also won three McLennan Ross events last year including Trestle Creek and at the Edmonton Petroleum Club.

In the Edmonton Junior, de Graaf, whose low round is a 63 last summer at his home Royal Mayfair course, bounced back from an opening round 74 to shoot a 4-under 68 to tie Nicholson and then win on the first extra hole.

“The top juniors are really good players,” said Mills. “They are hitting shots I wouldn’t dream of trying. Skinny little kids that pound it. It’s pretty impressive.”

For more information, the full schedule and results, visit www.mrossjrtour.com.

Glendale’s Kylie Barros won the Alberta PGA’s Championship at Calgary Earl Grey golf course with rounds of 79-75 to win by eight shots over the Derrick’s Marsha Rogers.

• Oops. Two weeks ago I inadvertently stated that the incredibly successful Northern Alberta Senior Amateur (NASA) Golf Tour was started by Art Switner. Instead, Switner, the Tour’s membership co-ordinator and former president, said all the credit should go to Jud Town, who introduced the idea in 1993.

• At Red Deer’s River Bend golf course, Beaumont’s Ella Gifford, 14, won the U-15 girl’s division of the Maple Leaf Junior Tour – presented by Red Deer College Athletics – with rounds of 88-84, while St. Albert’s Ethan Wilson, 12, took the Pee Wee boys with nice rounds of 75-76.

“It feels awesome to win!  This is my first win after 3 runner-ups,” said Wilson. “I made a lot of clutch comeback putts this weekend.”

“I am very happy to win,” said Gifford. “This is my first MJT tournament.  I really wanted to play MJT, and this one finally worked with my schedule.”

Sherwood Park’s Alyshia Suleman, 17, was second in the 15-18 girls division; Edmonton’s Luke Quanson, 13, was second in the bantam boys and Edmonton’s Dakota Smith, 21, was runner-up in the Collegiate Mens’ bracket.

Yet another hole-in-one at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club: Ellen Van Doesburg, a member of the course’s board of directors, used an 8 iron from 114 yards to ace number 17.

First ace of the season at Mill Woods belongs to Matt Johnson on No. 4 with a 9-iron from 140 yards.

Incredibly, there were four more aces at Windermere, including one from 11-year-old prodigy Jonathon Meng, who aced No. 5 from 117 yards with a pitching wedge.

“Watch for this name because he has a bright future in golf,” said Windermere head pro Jason Hnatiw.

The other aces at Windy were Ken Polukoshko on No. 8 from 130 yards with a 9-iron; Michael Powers, a Highlands member who got the job done on No. 12 with a 6-iron from 165 yards; and Shelley Ewart-Johnson on No. 5 during Ladies League with a hybrid and Casey Kleiter on No. 3 with a pitching wedge from 140 yards.

And, Royal Mayfair member Richard Shuhany went to the Edmonton Country Club to get his hole-in-one – dropping a 3-hybrid on No. 11 from 165 yards.

Alberta Junior Tour wraps up at Wolf Creek Golf Resort

Ponoka, AB – Wolf Creek Golf Resort near Ponoka was once again the site of the annual McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour presented by Crowe MacKay.

The season-ending tour championship featured 125 of Alberta’s best juniors from across the province as they descended on Ryan Vold’s beautifully groomed and eminently challenging layout.

Officials with Alberta Golf say the pre-tournament favorite in the junior girls’ division had to be Jayla Kucy from Camrose, the three-time defending tour champion who four-peated with a 4-over par 74.

But Kucy needed every one of her four birdies, as Brynne Davies of Earl Grey was hot on her heels with a 75. Paired together in one of the feature groups, Davies and Kucy more or less went about their business on the course, as Kucy admitted, “I didn’t even know where I stood with Brynne” during the round. “I was just playing golf.”

Kalee Seto of the Royal Mayfair, who captured the Alberta Golf U17 Championship last week at rain-soaked Alberta Springs Golf Resort west of Red Deer, completed the podium with an 80.

The junior boys’ division, however, didn’t have that one overwhelming pre-tournament favorite, as any of a dozen or more junior boys would not have been classified as an upset had any of them won.

14-year-old Christian Flick of Carnmoney GCC in Calgary, doesn’t yet have the resume of some of his contemporaries on the junior golf scene in the province, but backed up a confidence-building 68 in his practice round on Sunday with another 2-under par 68 on Monday when the guns had real bullets, per say. Six birdies, one double, a couple of bogies and his first major junior win.

One player who was on the favorites list was another 14-year-old Calgarian, Tyler Kidd of Priddis Greens GCC. Kidd, who won the Alberta Golf U15 Championship last week at Alberta Springs, had one of the best rounds on the Tour this summer, an 8-birdie 69 at the very difficult Trestle Creek Golf Resort early in July.

Kidd’s 1-under par 69 fell one shot short of forcing a sudden-death playoff. Josiah Tong of Heritage Pointe finished solo third with a 1-over 71.

The event brings down the curtain on the 27th season of the McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour.
