How Teleparty works

1. Install Teleparty. To install Teleparty, start off by clicking the "Install Teleparty" button on this page.

Teleparty lets you sync movie or TV show playback with friends or family - it used to only work on Netflix, hence the name Netflix Party, but now it also works with other websites too, meaning that not only can you watch the best Netflix movies together, you'll also be able to do the same thing with the best Hulu shows , as well as HBO and Disney Plus.

Below, we walk you through exactly how to use Teleparty including the set up process and how to select and change your nickname. So, whether you've got your heart set on a Disney Plus film or you're keen to binge watch a show on HBO Max , here's everything you need to know...

How to set up Teleparty

First things first, when it comes to figuring out how to use Teleparty, it's important to note that Teleparty is not an official feature of any of the streaming services it works with. It's supported by a Patreon , so if you enjoy the way you can do this, you may want to sponsor the developers there to ensure it keeps going.

Secondly, you'll need to have Google Chrome for this feature to work. You can use it in other web browsers like Safari , Firefox of Microsoft Edge, plus it won't work when you're watching on a TV or a phone either.

Whoever wants to watch will need to have Google Chrome running on their computer, and they'll want to download the extension to their browser here . That shouldn't take long to install, and then whoever is logged into the streaming service of choice will then want to set up a party.

You'll have to decide what you're going to watch before you set up the party. You can't scroll through the storefront of Netflix to choose what you'll be binging together, so you'll want to find the TV show or movie first and then follow the steps below.

When you've found what you're going to watch, the next step to how to use Teleparty is to press on the NP logo in the top right of your Google Chrome browser. It'll then say Create a Teleparty , and you'll want to press Start the party .

You'll then be greeted with a link that you can send out to whoever you want to join. This is a long URL, so it's likely you'll want to send this through another messaging service to find the right people.

Those with the link can then join the party, and you'll see them appear in the box on the right hand side. This is a chatroom so you can talk to people throughout, but this is only for text.

If you want to be able to talk to your friends, you can always use a separate video calling app at the same time. For example, we Skyped some friends at the same time as watching a TV show so we could talk along like we were sat on a sofa.

Now you're in the party, you can choose to play the TV show or film. Whoever is hosting the party will have control over where you're at, but everyone should follow along at the same time.

Not everyone watching has to have a subscription to Netflix for this to work, either, so it's a great way to show your new favorite TV show to a friend who otherwise can't watch it with you at your house. 

You'll have to redo the party every for new episode of a TV show you want to watch, which can be irritating, but if you follow the steps above you should be able to do it quite quickly.

How to set up your Teleparty nickname

Every time we've used Netflix Party or Teleparty, we've been given the icon of a cookie as our profile image. If you press on that in the top right, you'll be given the option to change your nickname.

Then people will know who you are within the basic chat window that appears to the right hand side of what you're watching. And there you have it, you now know how to use Teleparty. But is it the only way to watch TV shows and films with your friends and family?

Are there Teleparty alternatives?

When we tested Teleparty back when it was still Netflix Party, we have found that it could be quite temperamental for some. If that's the case for you, the good news is that this isn't the first time we've seen something like this for Netflix.

We've previously reported on the social streaming app Rave , which lets users sync Netflix or YouTube videos over mobile (or certain VR headsets ) with other users of the app. 

But Teleparty looks like it will have a far wider user base by virtue of being a browser add-on, rather than being limited to smartphones and tablets. It also covers a huge number of streaming services compared to its rivals.

In this self-isolating society, having more social features in our content services is a great thing. Having tried out Netflix Party ourselves, it's both non-obtrusive and simple to use, with a neat sidebar stuck on the right side of the screen, and options to set an icon and nickname for every person joining the synced stream.

In the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, Netflix Party has seen a surge of new users. Over ten million people have installed Netflix Party and are watching Netflix shows with their friends all over the world. We are now officially the largest social TV app in the world and it’s been awesome to see so many people using NP to stay connected with their friends and loved ones.

We believe watch parties are a fun way to relax and hang out with the people you care about, so we have always wanted to expand beyond just Netflix. We are thrilled to announce in Version 2.0.0 of Netflix Party we now support watch parties on Hulu (with and without ads), Disney+, and HBO (Now and Max).

Ever since the first lockdown a few years ago, the value of being able to watch TV and movies online with your friends without worrying about people being out of sync with each other has been repeatedly demonstrated.

Even when we're not under any restrictions, being able to watch together with people far away is really nice, and it's something that's well-catered for by an excellent browser extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge - Teleparty . Here's how to use it with Netflix and other streaming services.

How to use Teleparty

There are some key facts you need to know about Teleparty and how it works before you get started. Firstly, this is a Chrome and Edge extension, so it won't work on any other browsers. That means no Firefox, Safari or any others.

This has another knock-on effect - Teleparty will only work on a computer or a laptop, and won't therefore be compatible with your phone or smart TV. Still, you can always hook a laptop up to your TV so that you can still enjoy the big-screen experience.

To get started, each person that wants to be part of the watching party will need to add Teleparty to their browser, which you can easily do through the website here . The person whose Netflix account you'll be using then needs to set up a party.

They'll then be able to pick what everyone's watching, navigating to its page on Netflix then hitting the NP logo at the top right of your browser (which has been added by installing the extension).

This will let you create your Teleparty and kick things off. You'll be given a long, unique URL link that you can send to the other members of your Teleparty. As they click the link on a browser with the extension installed, they'll join the watch party and the attached text chat.

From there, the host can hit play to start the video, and they'll have control over it throughout. Each time an episode or movie ends, though, you'll have to start a new Teleparty.

If you didn't try it out during lockdown, Teleparty is a way of watching Netflix together while staying apart, all from the comfort of your respective homes.

The reason for the name change is that the service has since expanded to support YouTube, Hulu, Disney+ , Max , and Prime Video , while even more services are supported if you sign up for Teleparty's premium service.

What is Teleparty?

Teleparty is an extension for the Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera browsers – and there's a free version as well as an Android app.

Install it, then head to the web versions of Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Disney+, Max, or Prime Video to sync your streaming with friends so that the film or TV show you've all chosen starts at the same time for all of you. 

On the app, once you've signed into your streaming service of choice, it's just a couple of taps between you and your friends watching something.

Once it begins, you can all watch the same thing together as well as chat with Teleparty's text chat feature. If you're looking for even more features, you can sign up for Teleparty's premium subscription.

This will run you $3.99/month or $47.88 annually, and you'll get support for additional streaming services, like Apple TV , Crunchyroll, Paramount+ , Peacock , ESPN+, Hotstar, and Star+. But that's not all that comes with premium.

You also get voice and video chat, chat badges, nickname customization, and additional reactions you can use while chatting. Teleparty also adds new features to its premium service over time, so keep an eye out if you sign up.

What can you do with Teleparty?

Teleparty lets you all watch at the same time through your individual accounts. It also includes a way to chat with your friends while watching.

You can type to chat with your friends – comment on the film/TV show, ask them how they are, talk about the weather, send hugs, or say whatever you like. Naturally, you can send GIFs, emoji, and screengrabs, too. Voice and video options are available with the premium version of Teleparty.

There is a limit to the number of people that one Teleparty can hold, but it's a whopping 1000! Good luck organising that and do send us the pics. You can Teleparty with anyone across the globe, but do bear in mind that the same TV show or film might not be available in every country.

Also, those conscious of privacy will be pleased to know that Teleparty does not store messages or chat histories of its users.

What devices does Teleparty work on?

The Teleparty extension works on laptop and desktop computers, both Macs and PCs. There's also an Android app, which you can download from the Google Play Store. According to Teleparty, support for other devices, like iPhones and iPads, is coming soon, so stay tuned.

When it comes to video quality, Teleparty supports streaming in HD; however, Teleparty supports up to 4K streaming on the Microsoft Edge browser.

How do you use Teleparty?

It's easy. On your computer, install the free Teleparty extension from the Google Chrome Store, the Teleparty extension on the Edge Web Store , or on Opera . 

Then, open up Netflix , YouTube , Hulu , Disney+ , Max , or Prime Video , and start watching a video. It can be a film, show, documentary, or anything else.

The Teleparty extension icon next to the address bar in your browser window should have changed from grey to red. Click it, then follow the instructions in the pop-up window to start a Teleparty. Then, send the link to your friends.

On Android, download the Teleparty app from the Google Play Store. Once installed, you'll need to sign into your streaming service of choice within the app. After signing in, you'll be in a party and can tap 'invite' to add friends.

You can either take total control over the video playback or leave it open to anyone in the party. It's like leaving the remote control on the table for anyone to use. You'll be assigned an icon to represent yourself, sort of like an avatar. You can change this if you like, along with your nickname.

Those invited to join will also need to install the Teleparty extension or app.

How Teleparty works

Everyone that you plan to watch with (yourself included) should log in to your separate accounts on Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, or HBO. When you pick a movie or show to watch, Teleparty will sync the playback to all accounts so everybody is watching the same movie or episode simultaneously on their individual accounts. On the side of the screen, Teleparty features a chat window, allowing you all to chat and react to what you’re watching in real-time using your browser. It’s unknown how many people can join a single Teleparty, but it’s certainly enough to make it a true watch party.

Here’s how to host or join a Teleparty.

• Download the Teleparty Chrome extension (yes, it is only available right now in Google Chrome).
• Open your preferred streaming platform and play a video.
• The TP icon by your address bar will change from gray to red. Click on it .
• A pop-up window will instruct you to “Create a Teleparty.”
• Click “Start the party.”
• Your link will appear in the next window. By clicking the “Copy URL” button, you can then paste the link into an email or messenger app to share it with your friends. (If you need this link again, you can access it by clicking the Teleparty extension icon.)
• Download the Teleparty Chrome extension .
• Click the invitation link sent to you.
• Click on the Teleparty icon.

After that, you’ll be able to hop onto a friend’s Teleparty or host your own virtual movie watching party whenever you want. If you and your movie crew want to take your watching experience to the next level, consider installing the Scener extension. With Scener, Teleparty supports video and audio chats among your group during the viewing.

Now — you’ll have the chance to watch and enjoy your favorite shows and movies with your favorite people. System Requirements

Teleparty runs on laptop and desktop computers and Android devices. You can download Teleparty as a browser extension that is available for the Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge & Opera browsers. You can also install Teleparty on your Android device. Coming soon (but not currently available): iOS smartphones or tablets, smart TVs, gaming consoles and other devices.

All participants need to have access to an account connected to an associated streaming service (Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, and Netflix) to start or join a Teleparty. It is possible to use a shared account to join a party, but the account needs to be on a standard or premium membership plan which allows multiple viewers to watch the streaming service at the same time.

All participants also need install the Teleparty Chrome extension.

Up to 1000 friends can partcipate in the same Teleparty.

Everyone needs to sign onto Netflix, and needs to install the Teleparty Chrome Extension prior to starting or joining a party.

Teleparty is available in every country Netflix is available in. If you are creating a Teleparty with participants from multiple countries, you should double-check that the show you want to watch together is available in all of your regional Netflix libraries. You can use this tool to see what shows are available in each country. As a general tip you should consider watching Netflix originals, which are available in all countries.

If you can see a red "TP" button on the top right corner of your chrome browser, you have successfully installed Teleparty.

Note: if you don't see the "TP" button, on Chrome click located on top right area of your browser to view the hidden browser extensions. If you can't find the "TP" button, try uninstalling and reinstalling the extension on Chrome.

To uninstall, type chrome://extensions into the url, find Teleparty & click Remove

Reinstall Teleparty from the Chrome Web Store

Try starting or joining a party again (by clicking the Tp icon) and you should be able to use Teleparty.

Hosting a Teleparty

Login into your account on an associated streaming service and make sure you are on your main account profile. Select a show and make sure it is playing. Your url should look like “netflix.com/watch/videoID”. Then click on the red TP button to host your TP Teleparty chat room.

You can share the party link you get with friends to invite them to your party.

Make sure you are logged into an associated streaming service and that you are on your main account profile, and you have a show currently on and playing. Your url should look like “netflix.com/watch/ ”. When the app detects a video on your webpage, it will turn red, and you can click on it to turn the video into a Teleparty. If it is still not working, re-install Teleparty and try again.

Click on the shared link, which redirects you to the selected show. Then click the red TP button located on the top right area on your chrome/edge browser to automatically connect into the party chatroom.

Change your nickname by selecting the "User Icon". This'll prompt you to the setting interface where you may change and edit your nickname.

Copy and share links by clicking on the chain icon . This icon is located on the top right area of your chat interface. You can also invite friends by clicking on the TP button (once in a party and the video is playing) and then click the copy button next to the invite link.

Hide or show the chat room by clicking on the Tp button again. The interface will now allow you to show or hide the chat room.

We are aware of this and are currently still working on this. The chat is no longer overlapping the video, but it may overlap the settings on some of the streaming services. If you need to change a setting while in a party, Turn the chat off and then change the settings. Once the settings are to your liking you can turn the chat back on if you like.

How to host a Teleparty

• Install the Teleparty Chrome Extension in Google Chrome on your laptop or desktop.
• Open a video player in one of Teleparty's supported services: Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, or HBO Max.

• If you don't see TP, tap the puzzle piece to open the Extensions menu.
• Tap the Only I have control checkbox if you want to be the only one that can pause or rewind the video.
• Tap Start the party .

• Tap Copy URL .
• Share the Teleparty URL with your friends to let them join the party and get in on the fun.

• Whenever your Teleparty is over, tap the TP Teleparty logo .

• Tap Disconnect .

How to join and customize your chat avatar with Teleparty

• Open the Teleparty URL the host shared with you in Google Chrome.
• You'll be automatically redirected to the video service being used for the video to log in if you're not logged into Netflix/Disney+/Hulu/HBO.
• Wait about five seconds. This will give the extension time to pull up and load the proper video and the Teleparty session.
• Tap the avatar icon in the top right corner.
• Type in your Nickname so that everyone knows who you are.
• Tap the profile picture .

How to Stream Netflix on Discord for Watch Party

Want to host a watch party with your distant friends? Discord can be your hangout spot! You can use the screen share feature on Discord to stream Netflix, Prime Video, or any other streaming service to your friends. You can all watch it together on the Discord voice channel. Here’s how you can do it.

Things to Note

• First, you cannot stream Netflix or any streaming service on Discord mobile apps due to DRM limitations. You need to use the web app on the browser.
• The stream quality is limited to 720p 30FPS in the free version.
• Discord Nitro subscribers can go up to 4k 60FPS (not available for Nitro Basic).
• Of course, you need a Netflix subscription to play and stream it through Discord.
• In case you see a black screen while streaming, you need to disable hardware acceleration (covered below).
• It is not allowed by Netflix to stream content on other apps. Read ToS points 4.2 and 4.6 here .

How to Stream Movies and TV Shows on Discord

To make the explanation easier, I am using Netflix as an example. However, the process is the same for any other streaming service.

1. Open Netflix (or any other streaming app) on the browser.

2. Open the Discord app on the desktop or site on your preferred browser. Navigate to the server where you want to stream with your friends.

3. Join a voice channel along with all your friends.

4. On the voice channel, click Share screen icon (desktop with arrow icon) at the bottom left corner above your username.

5. If using the Discord app or have Discord and Netflix on different browsers : Select the browser on which you are playing your Netflix movie and go live in the pop-up.

6. If using Discord and Netflix on the same browser : Select the Netflix tab in the pop-up and start sharing.

7. Discord will start the stream. Play the movie on Netflix, and the movie will play for everyone on the channel in sync. Streamers can only play/pause, skip, add captions, etc.

That’s it, sit back, relax, have some popcorn, and enjoy the movie together. The best part about using Discord to stream? You guys can talk in the voice channel or even click on the camera icon to video chat while watching the movie.

Have a Black Screen Issue While Streaming OTT Movies and TV Shows on Discord?

If you see a black screen while streaming , don’t worry, it’s a common issue and can be easily fixed. Streaming services like Netflix are DRM-protected to stop people from pirating the movie. This protection is causing the black screen issue.

When this happens, you can fix it by disabling hardware acceleration on the browser and the Discord app (if you are using the Discord app to stream). Hardware acceleration is used for encryption of the DRM protection. While it’s not the main tool for DRM protection, disabling it will allow screen recording services like Discord to capture without bypassing the DRM protection.

Here’s how to disable hardware acceleration on popular browsers.

Note: Some browsers like Safari do not allow disabling hardware acceleration. Try using another browser if you are facing the black screen error on Safari.

On Chrome, Edge, Brave, and most Chromium Browsers

Open the browser, click on the three-dot menu > Settings, and then click on the System option in the sidebar. Now disable the toggle beside Use graphics acceleration when available / Use hardware acceleration when available . Restart the browser.

Open the  three-dot menu > Settings > General  and scroll down to the Performance section. Here uncheck Use recommended performance settings option. Then uncheck Use Hardware Acceleration when available . Restart Firefox to apply changes.

On Discord App

If you use the Discord app, you also need to disable hardware acceleration on the Discord app.

Open the Discord App, click on the Cog Icon beside the username to open Discord Settings >  Advanced , and turn off the toggle beside  Hardware acceleration . Then click the  Okay  button on the pop-up to confirm

That’s it, you have disabled hardware acceleration which will get rid of the black screen issue while streaming OTT movies and TV shows on Discord.

Apple’s new iOS 18 Web Eraser might let you pick which parts of a website to block

The main attraction of WWDC 2024 will be iOS 18 , and all the AI features that Apple is building into the iPhone’s operating system. The Safari browser will certainly be part of that upgrade. We’ve already seen some leaks indicating that new AI features are coming to Apple’s browser.

Safari 18’s purported AI capabilities and ad-blocking features are currently in testing, according to Apple Insider .

The blog details some of Safari’s upcoming AI features. For example, Apple is working on an Intelligent Search tool that could use on-device AI to identify topics and phrases. From there, the feature could summarize web content. If it sounds familiar, that’s because other GenAI products can offer web summarization. The big difference here is that Apple might process data on the iPhone and Mac rather than sending everything to the cloud.

Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on a Visual Lookup feature for Safari that will offer information about the contents of images. However, it might not be ready until 2025.

The upcoming Safari ad-blocker feature might be more interesting to some people than any AI tool. It’s reportedly called Web Eraser in the Safari 18 version that Apple is testing. It will reportedly let you block specific parts of a web page. The tool will basically let you erase ads and any other content you deem necessary.

Apple Insider says Apple might have copied the functionality from the third-party app 1Blocker, which lets users tap ads to make them disappear.

You won’t have to navigate to the Settings app to change the text size, access zoom, use extensions, or access the new Intelligent Search and Web Eraser tool. It’s certainly a welcome UI change that could make it easier to customize your Safari experience on a Mac.

It is a happy coincidence that our "What makes a good sex scene?" episode came out in the same week as Challengers, a film about a romance triangle in the tennis world starring Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and (not pictured) Mike Faist.

What makes a good sex scene? It can be easier spot bad sex, but Aisha Harris, Christina Tucker, Ronald Young, Jr. and I tried to focus on the good this week on Pop Culture Happy Hour. You can listen to our full conversation here. (We didn't originally plan for this episode to run the same week as our episode about Challengers , which is out in theaters now, but it's a happy coincidence, since that film has gotten a lot of attention — probably too much, relative to its other merits — for the sex scenes involving its three leads. It's really very good .)

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'challengers'.

It's often very obvious when a sex scene is bad, just like when a sex scene in a book is bad. It can get so uncomfortable to watch that you have to leave the room (and not in a way that feels true to the story). One of my personal tells for a bad sex scene is when all I can think about is how hard the actors are trying to persuade me that the characters are having a good time. For example, there has been much good discussion in recent years about Showgirls being a more interesting and competent project than it originally got credit for, but in that one pool scene (if you know it, you know it), all I can see is the effort.

It's not always as clear which scenes are good . That's partly because they serve so many different functions, all of which look different, and all of which can be effective. Furthermore, you don't want to confuse whether a sex scene is used well in a film with whether it's hot to you personally, despite the fact that there is overlap between those considerations.

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

Here's what I mean: When Aisha talks about the sequence near the beginning of Magic Mike's Last Dance , it's not irrelevant that the scene is, to her (and to me), hot. But it also makes sense in the context of the film and the franchise, partly because of the way it sets up the power dynamic between Mike (Channing Tatum) and Max (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike is older now, he knows more, and the way he approaches a lap dance is actually different than in earlier movies.

And not all good sex scenes are hot in the same ways. The one I mentioned in the episode, from the romantic drama Love & Basketball , is sexy, yes. But it's also a scene between young adults (the talented basketball players Monica and Quincy, played by Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps), and as such, it incorporates a tentativeness that's not present in Magic Mike's Last Dance , to say the least. As Ronald pointed out during our discussion, that sex scene is quite different from one that takes place later in Monica and Quincy's relationship, when they're older and know each other better. That certainly feels true to real life, but it's not always reflected in Hollywood films, where I would tentatively estimate that 90% of on-screen sex is more idealized and thus less intimate than real-life sex, in part because it isn't allowed to change over the course of a relationship.

Even further from the hotness of the lap dance scene is Ronald's pick: the imagination of Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) running wild in Oppenheimer. While her husband (Cillian Murphy) is being interrogated, she pictures him having sex with his mistress, Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). It goes by quickly enough that it might seem like a Christopher Nolan flourish for flourish's sake, but it serves the purpose of letting you feel her pain over her husband's affair. Her relationship with Robert doesn't look especially romantic in the film, let alone sexually charged; she finds herself consumed by the idea that he was having hot sex with this other woman, and she locks eyes with her vision of a naked Tatlock and finds herself tormented. It's not really the intent of the scene to titillate the audience, just to give specificity to the shape of Kitty's preoccupation with the affair.

What makes a good sex scene?

Christina raised another really important point, which is that sex scenes also collide with viewers at very specific moments. Her example from Bound , and the scenes between Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and Corky (Gina Gershon), touches on (among other things) her own history. It's an underappreciated aspect of the sex-in-movies discourse: representation matters in these scenes as much as anywhere else. I always wish I saw more sex scenes in movies that featured a broader variety of body types; it's still really rare to see ones that feature anybody who is even average sized. This is one of the reasons I'm curious about the upcoming season of Bridgerton , which places its focus on the gorgeous and curvaceous Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).

Looking for 'nomance': Study finds teens want less sex in their TV and movies

Good sex scenes are like any other kind of good filmmaking, honestly: it comes down to execution with purpose and care, done relative to whatever the function of the scene might be.

Whether that's spiciness or conflict or relationship growth or (as in the case of Bound ) setting up a steamy neo-noir story that wouldn't be the same if it weren't hot as heck, form follows function, ideally.

FINALLY Outer Range season 2. I hope they don’t mess it up

I thought I read somewhere that the Anita Pallenberg documentary was streaming in May. Here’s hoping for June.

Can someone tell me why most of all the shows the Netflix licenses from other providers are only in HD? For example, Matrix Resurrections is one of the best looking movies in 4K Dolby Vision. But on Netflix it’s only in HD. No idea why.
