dark tourist episode 8 mckamey manor

In the Netflix series Dark Tourist season finale , David Farrier gets back to America for insights into the Manson murders, survivalists and the scariest horror house in the world.

Nearly everyone on earth has heard of Los Angeles, California. It’s known as a major entertainment center of the world, and rightly so. However, as Dark Tourist ‘s David Farrier notes, it’s also a dark tourism “mecca.”

There are indeed some freaky stories about Hollywood, with one of the most classic ones being the Manson Family murders (AKA the Tate-Labianca Murders) of 1969.

Among those killed by Manson’s so-called “Family”: actress Sharon Tate and her unborn child, the coffee heiress Abigail Folger, aspiring screenwriter Wojciech Frykowski, business owners Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, teenager Steven Parent, hairstylist Jay Sebring, and the lesser-known victim, Donald Shea — a Hollywood stuntman and actor.

Of course, Charles Manson always denied responsibility for the murders, famously saying: “If I started murdering people, there’d be none of you left.” David attempts to immerse himself in this mythology, attending a Helter Skelter tour — though the Family originally misspelled it as “Healter Skelter” when they famously wrote those words in blood on a wall.

On the tour, a lady tells David that, before those murders, she never locked her door but has done so ever since. Interestingly, while making the episode, Charles Manson dies at the age of 83.

Getting deeper into the story, David meets Stoner Van Houten, a popular YouTuber who seems to admire Manson. In fact, the name “Van Houten” certainly stems from Manson follower Leslie Van Houten. That aside, Stoner takes David Farrier to the famous Manson hideout of Spahn Ranch.

Things start off a little weird and stay that way. For example, Stoner says he would thank Manson if he ever saw him, and that, if he played any role in the murders, it was hardly any worse than a drug deal gone bad. It’s interesting to see them in the famous Spahn Ranch cave, though Stoner doesn’t seem to understand why Manson’s considered a villain.

Meet Michael Channels, Charles Manson’s sole heir

Similar to Stoner, we get to meet Michael Channels — Charles Manson’s heir. How did the two meet? Through prison letters. Channels said he relates to Manson in some ways. They both grew up poor, had some negative experiences with strict religion in their families, and Channels obviously impressed Manson in some way (probably due to his loyalty).

A number of his statements sound like denial. He says that Manson didn’t do anything to regret, that he wasn’t really even the leader, and that he didn’t make them kill for him. Technically, then, anyone who hires an assassin can get away with it. Or, of course, if you put landmines on someone’s property, it’s technically not anyone’s direct fault, etc.

Anyway, it’s hard for Farrier to get a word in, as Channels is pretty defensive. He insists that he’s not a Manson follower and that he’s writing a book to “set the record straight” on Manson. Things do calm down a little, and Channels ends up seeming more like a “fanboy” than anything else. As David notes, Manson always attracted fans, outsiders and misfits.

Noah, the first “Doomsday Prepper”

David then travels to the Noah’s Ark replica in Williamstown, Kentucky. There he examines the replica and talks briefly with Dr. Georgia Purdom, a Molecular Geneticist and creationist. David notes how there are actually dinosaurs on the ark and asks why they’re not mentioned in the Bible. Purdom maintains that they are, as the Bible repeatedly references dragons. Also of note: Dr. Purdom maintains that, next time, there will be fire rather than a giant flood. If true, someone had better construct a giant, flame-retardant Ark, right?

A “Doomsday Prepper” family in Williamstown, Virginia

Heading to Virginia, David Farrier hangs out with Jay and Holly, who were inspired by 9/11 to be prepared for doomsday (the more generic term for such people is “survivalists”). How ready are they? They seem reasonably prepared, and show David how they’ve been stockpiling food and weapons.

At one point they role-play defending loved ones from looters and other miscreants.  Oddly enough, Jay and Holly seem fairly down to earth. Jay even says it’s awesome if he never has to use his gear.

Still, the idea that you stand a chance against any and all threats just by hoarding stuff? It’s a theory that has a few holes. It may not be the worst idea, but it’s probably sensible to work on building connections with others in case of a genuine crisis — not that the options are mutually exclusive, but time spent on one takes away from establishing the other.

Anyway, it’s a fine Dark Tourist  moment and shows that you can still have fun while preparing for the end times.

McKamey Manor, nonprofit extreme haunted house

Dark Tourist  ends on an extreme note, heading to the infamous McKamey Manor in Summertown, Tennessee. There David meets Russ McKamey, whose ongoing project relies on danger being attractive. However, it’s a premise that he pushes to extreme limits, and he wants to keep doing it.

According to Dark Tourist,  McKamey was in the military for 23 years, so has skills in breaking people. Interestingly, Russ’s only charge for admission is a bag of dog food to help feed his canines.

Who attends his literal torture sessions? Adrenaline junkies, people who want to appear tough, maybe a few hapless souls here and there. Then there’s Nick Newman, a 53-year-old thrill seeker from Memphis.

We get to see the physical and mental evaluations that are required, and David himself signs up to participate, despite — or maybe because of — McKamey’s prediction that David wouldn’t last more than 20 seconds.

To prepare for the feat, David wears a childish dog “onesie” outfit, and nick wears a shark one. They also sign a waiver intending to remove most liability. They provide each other with safe words and even adult diapers.

How do they do? David makes it past 20 seconds but still opts out early. Nick is dunked into ice cold water, forced to hold his breath for 30 seconds. He doesn’t last very long, either. In fact, Nick tells people, “Don’t come here.” Another couple, Caleb and Zoe from Missouri, are there the next day.

They last for hours rather than minutes but eventually give in. McKamey insists he’s an entertainer and not a psychopath or fetishist, which leads to the question: How far would you go to be entertained?

“I can’t do it, I can’t do it, I can’t do it, I can’t do ittttttt … I want to get out of here.”

Summertown is sleepy and rural, but about a year ago it burst onto the dark tourist map when its residents woke to the sound of terrified screams.

This is how David Farrier, host of the hit Netflix series Dark Tourist , introduces the most infamous horror house in the world: McKamey Manor. Owner Russ McKamey initially launched the manor in San Diego but recently relocated to Tennessee, much to the shock of locals.

It offers the most extreme weekend away ever, one that David says, “You really don’t want to do.” Essentially, it’s a tourist attraction where people flock to be tortured and terrorised, “just for the fun of it”.

But apparently, many actually do want to experience this, as there are reportedly more than 24,000 people on the waitlist for the brutal attraction.

“There’s something perversely attractive about something that sounds so dangerous,” David says as he nervously meets with Russ at the manor.

Russ says operating the horror experience has been challenging, as police are frequently being called by locals who hear the terror emanating from the house and its surrounds. He’s even been served cease and desist orders.

One of the allegations detailed in the report states: “A person was bound and tied behind a truck in what appeared to be some kind of abducted torture and killing.”

It’s certainly for the more extreme adrenaline junkies of the world.

All participants must be over 21 years old. Russ doesn’t charge for his service — all that’s required is a bag of dog food. However, they need a medical certificate and must pass a psychological evaluation.

Nobody has ever completed the experience, which can last up to eight hours.

Russ and his girlfriend, Carol Schultz, have spend more than $570,000 making the manor super-terrifying and as visitors are taken between four different locations, the whole “adventure” is filmed. The footage is posted on his YouTube channel which has 39 million views.

No visit here is ever the same, and some participants have even had their heads forced into a cage of snakes. Others are dunked into icy water, gagged, bound, have spiders or rats placed on them or even eat their own vomit.

David ponders of Russ: “Is he a showman or psychopath?”

To which Russ responds: “I am an entertainer, a comedian, and this is nothing but showbiz to me. I just love entertaining.”

Russ says while the experience is partly physical, it’s mainly a mental game. He was in the military for 23 years where he learnt mind control, interrogate people and hypnotism.

“You know you’re going to get cuts, bruises, sprains, possible broken bones, maybe death.”

In 16 years of doing the “extreme stuff” he’s never had a death but one participant suffered a heart attack in 2008.

The Netflix documentary shows David joining Russ’s next “victim” in the experience, while wearing a dog-themed onesie.

They meet in the park for a five-hour waiver ceremony, during which Russ explains: “You’re going to get hurt tonight, you’re going to get drowned, you’re going to get buried.”

The hours spent agonising over the disclaimer is a form of mental torture itself.

Then they place a metal piece in their mouths that keep them open, and blindfold them, leaving them disorientated.

After a few minutes, David calls it quits.

“I felt so terrified I couldn’t even think straight. Russ’s techniques are horrifically effective.”

Then Nick, the “victim”, is loaded on a car and taken to the Manor. The Dark Tourist cameras aren’t allow inside.

But a bodycam shows the victim being dunked violently into ice cold water and being told to hold his breath for 30 seconds, and after a few repeats he’s also done.

The man emerges with a bloodied, pale face and is visibly shaken.

His final words of advice? “Don’t come here.”

Russ, however, looks stoked.

A young couple also joined in. Picture: Dark Tourist/Netflix

The next day, David comes back to watch a young couple undergo the experience. They last longer, with brutal scenes showing them in a mock kidnapping, before they are also dunked in icy water and left blooded and marked.

But after a couple of hours, the cold gets to them too.

Russ McKamey Created An Extreme Haunted House, And He’s Attracted Controversy Ever Since

Jodi Smith

No longer content with traditional haunted house experiences, many entrepreneurial individuals started playing with the idea of extreme haunts in the early- to mid-2000s. Among those that emerged during that time, the McKamey Manor may be the most extreme, mysterious, and controversial of the bunch. Around the year 2000, Russ McKamey had an idea to create a grotesque haunt attached to his suburban home in San Diego, CA. McKamey films every participant's experience, from initial abduction to concluding interview, with an edited final clip eventually being posted to the site's web page.

McKamey Manor has become infamous for lawsuits from participants claiming they were harmed - both mentally and physically - by what they endured. Visitors can expect to be bound, blindfolded, forced to eat mystery foods, dunked in or soaked with ice-cold water, bruised, slapped, and have all sense of autonomy stripped away. Some visitors, however, allege that McKamey and his employees went too far with their actions.

Petitions calling for an end to McKamey Manor are prevalent. These include calls to look into the owner's finances - McKamey takes dog food and possibly even canned human food as payment - as well as his alleged involvement with Las Vegas bets being placed on his patrons. People complain that the extreme attraction is plagued by masochistic employees, safewords are ignored, the required 40-page waiver is unlawful, and police ignore calls to file charges on the Manor.

However, this hasn't slowed McKamey down; instead, he recreated his haunt at his new home in Tennessee and opened a new attraction, Desolation, in Alabama. Still, opponents of McKamey Manor continue their attempts to reveal the supposed truth of the attraction to the public.

McKamey Sometimes Calls The Authorities Before A Show, Telling Them To Ignore Concerned Neighbors

According to a 2018 interview with  Nashville Scene , Russ McKamey starts his business day at the Tennessee Manor location by calling local police to tell them that any calls from neighbors about screaming, or people running from his house, are false alarms. During one of the early shows at the new location, neighbors alerted police when a woman in front of his home screamed as what looked like kidnappers dragged her along. Authorities responded, but left when the 40-page waiver proved the woman consented to the event.

The incident prompted a Facebook post from Lawrence County Commissioner Scott Franks denouncing the Manor and garnering public support for running McKamey out of town. At that time, no official action appeared to take place, but the distaste of the small community toward McKamey remained firmly in place.

A Facebook Group Criticized McKamey For Not Properly Training His Employees

Employees of McKamey Manor include high school students, former participants, and McKamey himself. Together, they create, operate, and film the haunted attraction. None of them, however, have any training to recognize when a person needs assistance during the stressful experience they're put through. As quoted in The Guardian in 2015 , employee Andrew Sweeney likes the job because he can let out all of his aggression on unsuspecting participants, including ripping out hair with his bare hands or jamming visitors' faces into water.

A Facebook page called The Truth About McKamey Manor suggested that hiring people who are in it for the aggression means that attention paid to possible dangerous scenarios - such as visitors who lose consciousness, endure panic attacks, or experience dry drowning - may fall by the wayside. One petition  to shut down the attraction even claims that workers have histories of assault, making one wonder if those alleged employees would help someone even if they knew how.

No One Knows How McKamey Affords The Expensive Shows, Or How He Profits From Them

On episode 8 of the Netflix show Dark Tourist , McKamey claims to make only $800 a month from a Navy pension, without any other income whatsoever. However, he lives in a nice home in Tennessee, runs a haunted house he's invested an estimated $500,000 into, and also owns property in Alabama for his Desolation haunt. In the same show, an attendee of the haunt reiterates that the cost of admission to the Manor is a 50-pound bag of dog food (though monetary donations are also accepted).

Still, detractors question exactly how McKamey affords everything he has in the two properties. One petition for the closure of the haunt posits that McKamey garners income from Las Vegas gambling, based on his claim of providing a live stream of participants and their experiences to a group in the city. The Las Vegas group allegedly bets on, and makes suggestions for, the participants' experiences, and provides McKamey with a cut of the winnings.

One Man Started A Petition For McKamey To ‘End All Illegal Or Questionable Actions’

In late 2019, Frankie Towery began a petition to get McKamey Manor  shut down and moved out of its new location in Tennessee. Towery alleges that the large waiver participants sign has multiple typos, including the misspelling of "liable" as "libel," thus making it void from the beginning.

It also alleges that those who use the newly implemented safeword remain under duress  long after the word has been deployed. In Tennessee, the law states that one can remove their consent at any time after providing it, so footage surfacing of McKamey ignoring the safeword or revocation of consent is a violation of that law. As admitted by McKamey himself, the footage he releases is edited  and no other recording equipment is allowed during the experience.

The petition further alleges that people leave with broken bones and other mental and physical conditions - including one man who supposedly passed out - and that attempts to oversee the attraction's legality stumble due to lack of payment from visitors, as well as the fact that the Manor does not have a legal designation as a business.

McKamey Refuses To Release Full Videos Of Visitors’ Experiences From 2014

McKamey records every moment of a participant's time in the Manor with a small handheld camera. After the experience, the same camera captures testimonials from each exhausted, mentally frayed customer. McKamey edits these together into videos posted on the Manor's website  and YouTube channel to spread evidence of the extreme nature of the haunt and recruit new visitors. In a petition to close down the attraction, Liam Denver stated , "He refuses to release full videos to the public as well as the participants, and admits to giving massively toned down 'sissy tours' to bloggers and reporters."

Without the release of unedited videos, there is no way to fully verify claims from participants that their safeword was ignored, that they were tormented well past what is acceptable, or that coercion played a part in their post-experience testimonial. As such, McKamey avoids lawsuits and charges, despite one visitor claiming his experience went further than the advertised experience that appears in the Manor's promotional videos.

When McKamey Attempted To Move The Attraction To Illinois, Locals Lashed Out

In 2015 , McKamey cited losing his job as a reason for relocating his infamous attraction from San Diego to the more affordable town of McLeansboro, IL. The residents of the small town of 3,000 reacted poorly to news of McKamey and his controversial haunt coming to their town, prompting public outcry and vandalism of his chosen new location.

McKamey blamed his YouTube videos of participant experiences, troubles with his new landlady, and the town's location in the Bible Belt for the negative reaction to his planned move. McKamey remained in San Diego until finding a new location in Tennessee in late 2017.

McKamey Claimed Participants Weren’t Harmed ‘Like They Said They Were’

Claiming that everything seen  on YouTube is "smoke and mirrors" and referring to former visitors-turned-accusers as "haters," McKamey maintains that no participants have suffered anything more grievous than cuts and bruises. One alleged target of McKamey and his employees, Amy Milligan , claimed she thought she might perish as employees held her underwater, slapped her, and pulled her hair. Another attendee, Laura Hertz Brotherton, claimed McKamey not only informed her estranged husband of her new boyfriend immediately prior to the haunt, but also used that information to become more aggressive with her in the Manor.

Brotherton told Nashville Scene , "I was waterboarded, I was Tased, I was whipped... repeatedly hit in my face, over and over and over again. My arms and my hands were shaking so much from adrenaline, they thought I was seizing."

Brotherton went to the hospital to document her condition, and McKamey acknowledged that her swollen lips were from "fish-hooking," the act of using two fingers to pry a person's mouth open at the sides. He also admitted that black eyes may occur, but denied Brotherton's documented foot fracture. McKamey further admits that visitors can be covered in fake blood and receive bruises - as well as being bound or blindfolded and pushed to their physical limits - but not in the manner or to the extent Brotherton claimed.

Some Suspect McKamey Is Lying About The $20,000 Cash Prize

A 2017 announcement declared that anyone who makes it through McKamey's new Desolation attraction  wins $20,000 from the supposedly struggling owner. He claims that no one has ever won the prize or even come close, often  quitting before even entering . However, according to  Nashville Scene , there is no monetary reward for completing the attraction.

The article pointed to McKamey's liberal use of false promises, stories, and mental manipulation in the attraction itself as a reason the money does not exist. Multiple people tap out of the experience while reading the attraction's 40-page waiver, overwhelmed by the implication that they may have their teeth pulled without numbing, have their heads shaved, or be forced to swim with moray eels. None of those things take place - save possibly the head-shaving - which leads many to believe the money is a lie, too.

One Participant Claimed McKamey Threatened To Sue Her If She Gave A Negative Review

In 2016,  Laura Hertz Brotherton  claimed McKamey not only outed a relationship to her estranged husband, but also purposely let her experience go on for hours even after she tapped out. McKamey acknowledged later that he doesn't like cheaters, but claimed Brotherton received treatment no different from any other visitor - and he pointed to her positive exit interview as proof. Brotherton alleged that McKamey, who controls the edits and release of all footage, threatened to sue her for $50,000 if she failed to give a positive testimonial.

Brotherton gave the positive review, took herself to the hospital to document a fracture in her foot, and attempted to file charges. Due to the waiver Brotherton signed and McKamey's footage, charges were never filed.

McKamey Is Particularly Cagey About The Details Of His Alabama Location

McKamey's move to Tennessee in 2017 coincided with the purchase of a location in Alabama for a new attraction called Desolation. Unlike the Manor, little is known about the Desolation experience. In October 2019 , McKamey released a trailer for the Desolation experience and offered $20,000 to anyone who could complete it. Unlike the Manor, no stories of visitor experiences seem to be online and McKamey hasn't offered press tours.

The experience can supposedly last up to 10 hours, and requires watching a two-hour video of people attempting to complete Desolation, as well as the signing of a 40-page waiver and a sign-off from a doctor.

One Employee Claimed He Gets Carried Away And ‘Doesn’t Have A Line’

In an interview with  The Guardian  in 2015 , McKamey Manor employee Ryan Lawrence admitted he can take things pretty far: "I'm the enforcer, I'm here to make sure no one makes it out. I get carried away. I don't really have a line."

Later in the article, Lawrence admits to having a grudge against participant Christina Buster, who spent the previous year taunting the Manor's employees prior to her visit. Lawrence said, "I’m going to tear that girl apart. I’ll drag her by her bald head. No one is leaving with eyebrows today.” Buster did indeed have her head shaved during the experience.

Many Question The Attraction's Danger And Required Signing Of A 40-Page Participation Waiver

As the attraction gained infamy, the waiver grew into a 40-page beast that participants read together over the course of several hours prior to entering the Manor. A former visitor-turned-employee, Kris Smith, told  USA Today  that the waiver includes possibilities such as pulling one's own teeth, swimming in a tunnel with biting animals, and the possibility of getting a tattoo. More fatal results are also floated as a possibility.

Detractors wonder about the legality of signing a waiver with so many dangerous options listed. However,  County Commissioner Scott Franks of Lawrence County, Tennessee, admits, "It's legal because basically the people that are subjecting themselves to the McKamey program, or whatever you want to call it, they're doing so voluntarily."

Alleged victims point to the expansive and inclusive 40-page  waiver as the reason they provided positive testimonials at the end of their experience. The multitude of possible scenarios that are outlined in the waiver also prevented them from pressing charges.
