Watch Review: Casio Pro Trek Pendleton Collaboration

new pro trek watch

Measuring an eye-watering 51.5mm across and 51.6mm lug-to-lug, this watch is verifiably enormous, but as you can see, it doesn’t overwhelm the wrist nearly as much as you’d expect. Part of this is short, angled lugs, which do their very best to hug the wrist, part of it is the sloped city bezel, and part is the fact that when you take away the extra size from the pushers and case shapes, you’re left with a dial that doesn’t look that big because it’s so full (as opposed to some, thin bezeled dress watch that wears 4mm larger than it is). That’s not to say that it’s going to sit well on smaller wrists, but rather that it may not be as gargantuan as you’d expect.

The part you can’t see, that I can only tell you about, that my son might have been able to express if he weren’t hampered by his current developmental stage, is that the watch is light as a feather, weighing just 62g. For reference, a steel Rolex Daytona weighs about 150g and the Oris Aqiuis Date Calibre 400 weighs about 165g. You can thank the bio-based resin construction (i.e., plastic from renewable resources) for the case’s weight; presumably the gray ion-plated steel bezel and the mineral crystal together weigh about as much as the rest of the case. While the form is identical to other models in this line, this special edition gets a two-tone brown case with a bronze-tone crown, though those elements aren’t what stands out. Like those other models, it sports 100m of water resistance.

The Pendleton Collaboration model’s strap is made from recycled PET plastics and features a classic Pendelton pattern that evokes images of the American Southwest. Unfortunately, it’s nowhere near as soft as the textile company’s blankets. Getting a snug fit requires a bit of force, and the strap doesn’t conform very well in any case. This has been my experience with almost all recycled straps (such as the #tide straps used by many brands), which tend to be stiff and rough. I wore this watch on humid summer days, in the ocean, and in a creek, and the strap didn’t give much. The strap isn’t painful or abrasive, it’s just not as comfortable as a traditional textile (or leather or rubber) strap might be. Unfortunately, the lugs are 23mm, so strap swaps will be a challenge for most.

new pro trek watch

The Casio Pro Trek Pendleton dial remains quite legible despite everything that’s going on. The main dial is a deep gray with a glossy Pendleton design printed in the middle; the design can disappear in the wrong light but will usually show itself more often than not. Despite the busy dial and design, the watch does use Casio’s Tough Solar technology to keep charged. At 10 o’clock is a Pendleton-themed function indicator with a multi-colored hand, which is echoed in the seconds hand. The hour and minute hand, along with the printed hour numerals feature Casio’s Neobrite lume, and the watch has a small backup light activated by the small button between the 6 o’clock lugs. The lume is certainly adequate, though I’m sure if you were properly in the wilderness, you’d be happy to have the backup light. The digital display manages many of the non-time functions, including the date display, and also features a backlight. In fact, the light can be set to turn on automatically when the watch is moved to be read (from parallel to a greater than 40° angle) but won’t turn on if you’re looking at it in bright light. I guess this is a good time to tell you there’s a power-saving mode, too.

The functionality of this watch is honestly overwhelming. Even the most daring outdoorsman probably wouldn’t need everything. Using Casio’s Triple Sensor, the watch’s most notable functions are a barometer, thermometer, and compass. Beyond those, it has an altimeter (based on the barometer readings), stopwatch, timer, alarm (five of them!), and world time functions. I am not going to go into every single detail about all of these functions—you’ve already been reading long enough. You should know a couple of things, though. All the functions (and their many subfunctions) are operated through the four pushers and crown. While many of the functions are fairly straightforward, some are more complicated to set and use, and some require calibration and recalibration. For instance, the altimeter wasn’t accurate when I took a reading outside my house, but the watch allows you to manually adjust it as needed (this would be useful at the start of a hike). The barometer and thermometer had similar issues (though I can’t understand the latter’s error). I imagine most people would use this not every day, but for specific outings, and as such, they’d likely want to calibrate the sensors each time.

Casio’s new Pro Trek watch is made of corn and castor seeds

Casio’s new Pro Trek PRW61 outdoor watch is its first to be made using renewable biomass plastics, which combined with packaging made from recycled paper, is helping the company reduce its overall carbon emissions. Rather than just a single part of the watch being made from the material, the PRW61’s case, case back, and band are all made from biomass plastic. Biomass plastics use raw materials from organic, renewable sources like plants, with Casio specifically mentioning castor seeds and corn.

If you’re more familiar with Casio’s G-Shock range than Pro Trek, these watches are best suited to hikers, climbers, and anyone who loves being out and about in nature, meaning the use of sustainable materials fits in perfectly with the brand’s image. The PRW61 has Casio’s Triple Sensor array built into the case, which features a barometer/altimeter, a compass, and a thermometer. To maintain accurate time it uses Casio’s Multi Band 6 system to sync with dedicated radio towers around the world.

Despite the change in materials, the PRW61 is still a tough watch. It will resist low temperatures and continue working (down to -10 degrees Celsius or 14 degrees Fahrenheit) and is water-resistant to 100 meters. Other features include an alarm, timer, and stopwatch, plus a world time mode. There’s no need to charge the watch or to replace the battery on a regular basis either, as it has solar power which on a full charge will keep it going for six months even if it doesn’t see any light at all.

  • The new iPad Pro is here, and it looks absolutely ridiculous

At 53 grams and 14.7mm thick, the watch is light and wearable, at least compared to some of the larger G-Shock outdoor watches like the 92-gram Mudmaster GG-B1000 or 106-gram Mudmaster GWG-2000. Neither the Mudmaster nor the Pro Trek PRW61 has a Bluetooth connection though, despite it becoming a more common feature on Casio’s G-Shock watches.

The PRW61 was first announced in Japan in February but is now official for the U.S. The watch will be available in April for $420 and sold in a single design with a black case and band with silver accents. In Japan and Europe, there are two other versions available, one stealthy black-on-black model and a more outdoorsy khaki and black version.

It seems like the countdown to the next iPad reveal has been stretched out a bit more, though not by an earth-shattering amount of time. So far, we’ve heard rumors of a late March or early April reveal, but that likely won’t happen, according to a new report from Apple insider Mark Gurman.

In his latest Bloomberg report, Gurman says the next Apple tablets should arrive in early May, and he cited the speeding up of production at Apple’s suppliers. Interestingly, production-related challenges apparently pushed back the launch of the new slates across the Pro and Air lineups.

The Apple Watch Series 9 is the best smartwatch you can buy, regardless of the fact you can only use it with an iPhone. It's also great that it comes in three flavors — the Series 9, along with the Apple Watch SE 2, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 — to suit many more people and pockets than you may first think. However, perhaps you want something a little different on your wrist or even a weekend alternative when you don’t feel like wearing a touchscreen watch.

That’s where this list should help you out, as we’ve gathered eight watches to buy instead of the Apple Watch. Notice I said “watches,” and not just smartwatches, as some non-connected wristwear has been included. Our choices cover the entire Apple Watch range in terms of price, even going above and below, to give you some real inspiration about a watch to buy instead of — or as well as — the superb Apple Watch. Casio launches new Pro Trek adventure watch inspired by your best camping knife

Unlike previous watches in the line, the Pro Trek PRW-6900 takes inspiration from campfires and woodcarving

Casio Pro Trek PRW-6900 watch

Casio has revealed a new watch in its outdoor Pro Trek line, with a look the company says was inspired by bushcraft and woodcarving.

As Casio fan blog G-Central reports, the Pro Trek PRW-6900 is the first watch in the series to have an octagonal rather than round bezel. Casio itself says that the edges are intended to resemble the head of a camping axe , with a hairline finish and ion plating intended to make them appear sharp.

The surface of the dial is intended to evoke the feeling of camping cookware, while the hand of the inset subdial is designed to resemble your best camping knife , with a black handle and silver blade. The second hand of the main dial is colored to look like a campfire flame.

Casio says that the Pro Trek line is designed for "mountain climbers, trekkers, and everyone who just loves the outdoors". However, it's worth noting that this particular model doesn't have the rotating dial of the Casio Pro Trek PRG-340  launched in August, and isn't designed to be used flat against a map.

It does, however, have Casio's triple sensor (altimeter-barometer, compass, and thermometer), solar charging, and automatic radio time syncing. It also offers world time for 29 cities, stopwatch, countdown timer, and alarm. This isn't a GPS watch , which means battery life is measured in months, or even years. The watch will run for six months using all functions without solar charging, and 25 months in power-saving mode.

Casio Pro Trek PRW-6900

The new Pro Trek comes in three colorways. The khaki PRW-6900Y-3 and black PRW-6900Y-1 both have cases and bands made from biomass plastics to reduce the use of petrochemicals, while the brown PRW-6900YL has a band made from fire-retardant leather (intended to shrug off stray campfire sparks).

Casio has yet to announced prices or international release dates, but the three Pro Trek PRW-6900 variants are expected to go on sale in October.

Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 Review: A Super-Spy Watch for the Rest of Us

Casio ProTrek-PRG340-1 Watch

Loads of gizmos, built for adventure, and charmingly ugly, the Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 is mission-ready.

Stunts, chase scenes, exotic locales —  when you think of the Mission: Impossible movies, certain set pieces come to mind. But among EDC enthusiasts, this film franchise has another calling card: Ugly but charming (“chugly”) wristwatches .

Now, the ProTrek PRG340-1 ( $280 ) hasn’t technically been featured on the silver screen. But in my mind’s eye, this new Casio would be perfectly at home on the wrist of an IMF agent.

It’s got all the features a good super-spy needs: solar charging, a compass, barometer, and altimeter, and enough alarms and timers to keep your world-saving plan on track. Plus, it has that bulky, utilitarian look I’ve come to expect from Ethan Hunt and his team.

So when the offer to test drive the watch came through, I half-expected the email to set my computer on fire. This, thankfully, did not happen. But a certain theme song may have played in my head as soon as the tester arrived. And over more than a week’s worth of wrist time, the tune never quite managed to fade.

In short: The Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 is an excellent adventure watch, fully equipped for various situations. Its massive numerals and easy-access functions make it a breeze to operate, in a package that wears somehow smaller than its dimensions. It’s attractive, feature-rich, and let down just slightly by its materials and finishing.

Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 Watch Review

Wearing Casio ProTrek PRW6900YL-1 Watch Review

  • Case size: 54.7 × 51.7 × 15.1 mm
  • Case/band material: Biomass plastic
  • Weight: 54 g
  • Movement: Casio Tough Solar/Triple Sensor Quartz
  • Water resistance: 100 m
  • Crystal: Mineral

Do you want other people to be able to read the time from your wrist, halfway across the room? Then the PRG340-1 is your watch.

The central numerals dominate the ProTrek’s display, which is somewhat smaller than its nearly 55mm length would indicate. Yet despite its size, the watch wears surprisingly well.

Its case rises 15.1 mm from the wrist, and the band dives down from the lugs with a comfortable grace. There’s also a model with a titanium bracelet , for an upcharge of $50.

Casio aimed to make the ProTrek equally as easy on the environment. The company website states that the PRG340 line uses biomass plastics that don’t sacrifice comfort.

“The case and urethane band are crafted from biomass plastics made with castor oil and the band from biomass plastics made with corn,” according to Casio.

Corn, you say? Well, I guess even a super-spy needs to have their vegetables. But as cushy as the band may be, I’m more impressed with the various gadgetry.

The Adventurer’s Toolbox

The PRG340-1 comes with three major sensors: a compass, a barometer, and an altimeter. This leaves out the atomic timekeeping found on its recently reviewed cousin , though the solar charging remains.

Each of these is available with a press of the corresponding button on the watch’s right-hand side. There’s also a two-way rotating bezel, something the analog/digital PRW6900YL-5 lacks.

But the star here is the screen. Per Casio, “The duplex LCD lays out separate layers for the compass graphics and the clock functions, enabling a larger compass display for better legibility and easier navigation in a design that is both functional and beautiful.”

It’s fairly impressive to see this layering in action, especially knowing that there’s a solar panel lurking somewhere behind. Some digital watches can be difficult to read at an angle, especially when driving or wearing sunglasses. Not so with the PRG340-1, despite its technical complications.

And speaking of brightness, check out its double LED.

PRW6900YL-5 Double LED Casio ProTrek Watch Review

From a technology standpoint, I think this ProTrek lines up with its price. Unfortunately, it’s let down just a bit by the plastics surrounding said tech.

I’m all for the use of environmentally friendly materials, and for this, Casio gets something of a pass. But there’s also a slight touch of button-wobble here, and the chassis feels similar to that of a basic Tough Solar Sport .

Are the biomass plastics better? Yes, I’d say so. But whether or not they’re $200 better is up to the buyer to decide.

Speaking of the number 200, it would be nice to see a higher water resistance here. Still, 100m is solid, and I understand that the sensors likely prohibit a better rating. And the PRG340 will do something that even most watertight G-SHOCKs won’t:

Casio watches

That’s right! It’ll lay flat.

And all jokes aside, this is actually a nice feature. It means that you can set the watch on a table while fist-fighting with an assassin or terrorists, and still be able to glance at the time.

Casio ProTrek PRG340-1: Conclusion

Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 Watch Review

Reading through the product description, it’s clear that Casio is selling the PRG340-1 as an adventurous, outdoorsy watch. And truly, it is. But for me, this is secret-agent stuff all the way.

With its massive numerals, technical credentials, and intuitive layout and interface, the ProTrek PRG340-1 has all the makings of a long-term, go (almost) anywhere companion.

The use of biomass plastics is laudable, even if they leave the watch feeling just a touch on the side of toy-like. But in my book, the overall comfort and functionality make up for it.

Now, stand back — this review will self-destruct!

Casio Men's PAG240T-7CR Pathfinder Triple-Sensor Stainless Steel Watch with Titanium Bracelet

The Pro-Trek Pathfinder PAG240T-7 takes that classic rugged outdoor watch route with its design. The digital dial is at the center of a highly industrialized aesthetic that certainly delivers a level of toughness similar to that of a G-Shock watch. The watch case is made from stainless steel and measures 51mm. The PAG240T-7 also incorporates a titanium band which helps reduce the overall weight of the timepiece without affecting its durability too much. One of the most prominent features of the PAG240T-7 is its duplex LCD display. This design choice allows for a more organized presentation of information within the limited space provided by the digital display. The PAG240T-7 is also equipped with the signature Triple Sensor that provides users with an altimeter-barometer, compass, and thermometer. This Pro-Trek Pathfinder watch also comes with a World Time feature (31 time zones, 48 cities), a 100-meter water resistance, and a -10C temperature resistance.

Pro-Trek PRW3500-1

Casio Men's PRO TREK Quartz Watch with Resin Strap, Black, 26 (Model: PRW-3500-1CR)

The Pro-Trek PRW3500-1 focuses on a more water-resistant build this time around. Fortunately, it didn’t need to take out certain key aspects to reach its 200-meter water resistance rating. It is still equipped with the Triple Sensor design, so users can rest well knowing that they still have a compass, altimeter-barometer, and thermometer at their disposal. The PRW3500-1 also has a more rugged and industrial aesthetics. However, despite the bulkier build and a 56mm case, its weight is never an issue as the PRW3500-1 model utilizes a lightweight resin case build. Its higher water resistance also means it is suitable for a wider range of environments and can even be used for snorkeling and some light scuba diving. Additionally, the PRW3500-1 model also has an outstanding low-temperature resistance and solar-powered technology. It is also equipped with a Japanese quartz movement and a multi-band 6 atomic timekeeping for optimum accuracy no matter your location. Over at the front case, you will also notice that the PRW3500-1 has a rotating bezel. If you are more into marine-based outdoor activities, then the Pro-Trek PRW3500-1 is more suited to your needs.

In addition, it comes with an excellent low-temperature resistance for up to -10C. The compass also has a bearing memory to help you keep track of your movement and trajectory. Compared to other Pro-Trek watch models, the PRW-3100YB has a significantly larger build with its 56mm reside case. Within the sleek-looking case is a Japanese quartz movement with digital display. The overall build of the PRW-3100YB also gives it decent 100-meter water resistance, making it suitable for recreational water activities.

Pro-Trek PRG-600Y-1CR

Casio Men's PRO TREK Stainless Steel Quartz Watch with Silicone Strap, Black, 30.5 (Model: PRG-600Y-1CR)

The PRG-600Y is a hybrid analog-digital watch that combines the best of both worlds in a highly refined robust timepiece. The safari-inspired aesthetic showcases what type of watch this is. The dial design focuses on legibility with its bold gold-tone hands and markers which is further enhanced by the double LED backlight. The LED backlight can also be adjusted to provide longer illumination and an afterglow effect. The PRG-600Y features a 52mm stainless-steel case which perfectly complements the rugged aesthetics. Of course, the PRG-600Y comes with the Triple Sensor feature. You get a digital compass, altimeter-barometer, and thermometer to help you navigate the great outdoors. The PRG-600Y also has solar-powered batteries, an incredible low-temperature resistance construction, and a 100-meter water resistance. This feature provides users with a highly intuitive way to access all the key features via the electronic crown. Navigating through all the essential functionalities is now streamlined thanks to this feature. The PRW-6600Y comes with all the standard watch features you would expect from Pro-Trek. It features a stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm, and a World Time. Notable features that the PRW-6600Y have in its arsenal include Pro-Trek’s signature Triple Sensor feature, Tough Solar, multi-band 6 atomic timekeeping, and 100-meter water resistance. The case is made from stainless steel and measures around 51mm in diameter. Overall, the PRW-6600Y is your standard solid Pro-Trek watch with a cool glacial blue aesthetic.

Pro-Trek PRW-60T-7AJF

Casio PRW-60T-7AJF (Japan Domestic Genuine Products)

The PRW-60T-7AJF is quite similar to the PRW-60Y in terms of design, with the main difference being that the 60T model incorporates a titanium bracelet – making this model about 50% heavier than the PRW-60Y. The titanium bracelet does enhance the overall sense of refinement and class that the 60T model exudes. Other aspects are almost identical with the PRW-60T. It comes with the signature Triple Sensor feature and a multi-band 6 atomic timekeeping technology that goes along with its Japanese quartz movement. Also, this is a Japanese exclusive model which further adds to its appeal if you are a watch collector.

Pro-Trek WSD-F30

CASIO PROTREK PRO Trek WSD-F30-RG Japan Import

Quite possibly Pro-Trek’s most advanced model, the WSD-F30 features a more smartphone design with its OLED digital display. It is also one of the best outdoor timepieces from Pro-Trek. Besides the Triple Sensor build, it also comes with GPS navigational system which allows you to track your location via GPS, GLONASS, and Michibiki satellites. The WSD-F30 is also designed with improved durability with its shock, vibration, and humidity-resistant construction. Pro-Trek PRW-7000X

Casio Pro Trek PRW-7000X-1JR Radio Solar Watch (Japan Domestic Genuine Products)

The Pro-Trek PRW-7000X is one of the brand’s high-end models, and a quick glance at its premium-grade specs proves that distinction. In terms of flagship models, the PRW-7000X is definitely Pro-Trek’s finest. It features a wide scope of functionalities that will be significantly beneficial to users. First of all, it is equipped with high precision sensor technologies designed for land and water-based activities. The build of the PRW-7000X gives it a sold 200-meter water resistance. The overall construction of the case features a carbon bezel and is partnered up with a field composite band for optimum comfort and flexibility. The dial is also quite stunning with its electronic crown and rose-gold color that gives a level of style to the PRW-7000X that is not typically found in your typical Pro-Trek watch. The PRW-7000X is endowed with Pro-Trek’s best features. It comes with Tough Solar technology, multi-band 6 atomic timekeeping, Triple Sensor, a tide graph, fishing time function, sunrise/sunset data, Neon illuminator backlight, and high-quality sapphire crystal window. If you are looking for the best Pro-Trek watches that money can buy, look no further than the PRW-7000X.

While there are similarities with another Casio watch brand , the highly popular G-Shock watch line. These two go head-to-head on this particular market, and with almost similar features – choosing between the two can go down to a razor-thin decision. While some of the higher-end models of the Casio G-Shock do have Triple Sensor technology in tow, it is Pro-Trek watches that were initially for this type of watch features.  Pro-Trek watches all feature the Triple Sensor whereas G-Shock only includes them on some premium-grade models – so if these three features are a top priority for you – then it’s definitely a factor to consider.

  • How to watch
  • What to expect

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su returns to the Nangang Exhibition Center in Taipei, Taiwan next week to give the opening keynote address for Computex 2024, and it's expected to be a huge event.

This year has been dominated by talk of the AI PC revolution that's just over the horizon, and after the Microsoft Copilot+ PC event last month — as well as the prominence Qualcomm played at that event — all eyes are going to be on AMD's CEO to see how Team Red responds.

In addition, there has been a lot of chatter in recent months about the Zen 5 architecture that will power the next-gen AMD Ryzen desktop processors. Needless to say, there's a lot that may be revealed next week, so here's how to watch the AMD Computex 2024 keynote so you can follow along in real time with us.

When is the AMD Computex 2024 keynote?

The AMD Computex keynote starts at 9:30AM Taipei time on Monday, June 3, which is 9:30PM EDT, June 2nd, and 2:30AM BST, June 3rd.

This is going to be the opening keynote on Computex's 'press day', so the conference floor won't be open yet, so whatever is revealed during Dr. Su's keynote, it'll be the first time anyone will be seeing it publically.

You'll be able to watch the AMD Computex 2024 keynote on AMD's website , as well as on the AMD YouTube page . We went ahead and made it easier for you by embedding the live stream down below, so just bookmark this page and come back to it when the keynote begins to find the stream.

There'll also be a live blog of the event, so check back about 15 minutes before the start of the keynote on Monday to find all the latest analysis of the news from Su's keynote as it happens.

AMD Computex 2024 keynote: what to expect

Given that 2024 is the year of the AI PC, expect AMD to also promote its latest AI tech, including the potential for new laptop processors that are Microsoft Copilot+ PC compliant, meaning a 16GB laptop with a 256GB SSD and an NPU that can performance more than 40 TOPS.

Of course, there's also been a lot of buzz about the next-generation of Ryzen desktop processors, so they could also very well make an appearance at Computex 2024.

Senate and House Races to Watch in New Jersey

On June 4, Democrats and Republicans will choose nominees for the U.S. Senate. In the House, Representative Rob Menendez faces a strong primary challenge.

  • Share full article

A “Vote Here” sign at a polling place in Blackwood, N.J.

By Elise Young

For decades, New Jersey’s congressional and U.S. Senate primary elections were typically low-drama affairs. But this year’s dozen contests involve considerable intrigue.

Among the unexpected factors in the June 4 contests: the corruption trial of Senator Robert Menendez, who bowed out of the Democratic primary but has suggested he might run as an independent in November; and a court ruling that forced Democrats to redesign election ballots across the state.

Seven candidates are vying to replace Senator Menendez, a Democrat who is standing trial in Manhattan. And his fate has had considerable impact on two down-ballot races as well. In the Eighth Congressional District, a freshman congressman — Senator Menendez’s son, Representative Rob Menendez — is facing strong competition when he had been expected to coast to a second term. And in the Third District, a pair of former political allies are fighting for the House seat that became open when the incumbent, Representative Andy Kim, jumped into the Senate race.

The ballot design ruling will affect every Democratic primary in the state, after a federal judge barred the party from using a longstanding layout called “the line,” which gave prominent placement to candidates endorsed by party leaders. (Republicans, who were not party to the lawsuit that led to the decision, are free to continue using it.)

The ruling was hailed by watchdog groups and scholars, who said the century-old design, used in New Jersey and no other state, violated constitutional rights.

The June 4 primary will be the first election since the ballot ruling. New Jersey voters will consider Democratic and Republican candidates for the Senate as well as 11 of 12 congressional seats. (In the Tenth House District, a special primary will be held on June 16 and a special general election on Sept. 18, to finish the term of the late Representative Donald M. Payne Jr. of Newark.)

Here is a look at the state’s three most-watched contests:

U.S. Senate

Senator Robert Menendez, 70, who has pleaded not guilty to federal criminal charges including bribery, corruption and obstruction, will not appear on the Democratic ballot, but his trial has loomed large over the primary. Three Democrats and four Republicans are competing for a chance at his seat.

Representative Andy Kim, after fending off a fight from Tammy Murphy, the first lady of New Jersey, is the front-runner on the Democratic side. An April 15 poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University also gave Mr. Kim a nine-point edge over the two leading Republicans, in a state that has not sent a Republican to the Senate since 1972.

In the Democratic primary, voters will choose among Mr. Kim, a former Obama administration official; Lawrence Hamm, who headed Bernie Sanders’s 2020 presidential campaign in New Jersey; and Patricia Campos-Medina, a workers-rights scholar and organizer.

Mr. Kim, 41, has $4.2 million in campaign funds on hand, while his two challengers have a combined $69,000, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

Mr. Kim was a plaintiff in the ballot design lawsuit and said he wants to end New Jersey’s political cronyism. “What I hope people see in me is someone who wants to do the work,” he said in an interview.

Mr. Kim voted for the $95.3 billion aid package to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan that President Biden signed in April. In May, he called for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas “to preserve the possibility of peace through a two-state solution.”

Mr. Hamm, 70, said his record of political activism and community organizing runs 53 years, “longer than my competitors have been alive.” He said he supports a universal income and free college and health care.

Ms. Campos-Medina, 51, said her focus would be on immigrants and low-income residents. “The richest 1 percent own 40 percent of the country’s wealth,” she said by telephone. “That’s not sustainable for democracy.”

At a May 13 debate, the Democratic candidates found much common ground: Each would vote to expand the U.S. Supreme Court, scrap the Senate filibuster and push to increase access to abortion.

The two most high-profile Republican candidates are Curtis Bashaw, a 64-year-old Cape May developer, with $825,000 cash on hand; and Christine Serrano Glassner, 60, the Mendham Borough mayor, with $3,800 in her campaign account, according to federal records.

“I’m a political outsider, a business guy, and I’m good at bringing people together to get things done,” Mr. Bashaw said by telephone.

Ms. Serrano Glassner has the endorsement of Donald J. Trump, who in the New Jersey presidential election in 2020 finished 16 percentage points behind Mr. Biden. In an email, she said of Mr. Kim: “He has voted with Biden 100 percent of the time, making him equally responsible for this disastrous economy.”

The other two Republican candidates are Albert Harshaw of Jackson, a Navy veteran; and Justin Murphy of Tabernacle, a former deputy mayor.

8th Congressional District

Representative Rob Menendez of Jersey City, 38, is facing a Democratic primary challenge from Ravi Bhalla, the 50-year-old mayor of Hoboken; and Kyle Jasey, 41, of Jersey City, who runs a real-estate finance company. The lone Republican is Anthony Valdes, 43, of West New York, a building inspector.

Representative Menendez has not been accused of wrongdoing and has not been implicated in the legal case against his father. He said those seeking to oust him are opportunists who regard him as vulnerable because of his father’s legal trouble.

“You look at Ravi’s messaging — it’s largely about my father, not so much distinctions between him and I,” Mr. Menendez said by telephone. Though internal polls have him and Mr. Bhalla statistically tied, Mr. Menendez’s $1.8 million in campaign cash is double that of Mr. Bhalla, and he has collected endorsements from political leaders, organized labor and civic groups.

In an interview, Mr. Menendez said his office has resolved 1,600 cases for residents who had problems with the federal government, “the large percentage of those which are immigration-related.” He said he was instrumental in securing $11 billion in federal money for Amtrak’s Gateway passenger-rail project. “In Washington we’ve developed a profile in the caucus of someone who does the hard work,” he said.

As mayor and a former councilman, Mr. Bhalla has led a safety campaign to end traffic-related deaths and injuries in one of New Jersey’s most densely populated cities, on the Hudson River across from Manhattan. He also oversaw the first lawsuit by a New Jersey municipality against the oil industry, claiming its contribution to climate change has contributed to his city’s catastrophic flooding.

“Mayors have to solve challenges,” Mr. Bhalla said. “I have that experience.”

Mr. Jasey, who has less than $9,000 in campaign cash on hand, said he initially wanted to run for the senior Menendez’s Senate seat, then saw a shot at unseating his son.

“You’ve got this clear case of nepotism in the district,” he said in an interview.

3rd Congressional District

Mr. Kim’s Senate bid put his House seat in play, and five Democrats and four Republicans are hoping to replace him. Since 2018, when Mr. Kim unseated a two-term Republican, Tom MacArthur, redistricting has made the district significantly more Democratic.

The most prominent Democratic candidates are two State Assembly members: Carol Murphy, 61, who took office in 2018 and in the past worked for lawmakers; and Herb Conaway, 61, a physician who also has a law degree and was first elected in 1997. He has received endorsements from the Democratic organizations in Burlington, Monmouth and Mercer counties, which would have given him the most visible ballot position under the old system.

“Had ‘the line’ remained, he would have been considered the overwhelming favorite,” said Ben Dworkin, director of the Rowan University Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship. “Without the line, he is favored, but he doesn’t have that added benefit of preferred ballot position.”

Mr. Conaway and Ms. Murphy worked together in the Assembly and had similar voting records. As congressional candidates, both said they would champion reproductive rights.

“I will continue to defend a woman’s right to choose and a patient’s right to consult with physicians to direct their health care,” said Mr. Conaway, who has been Assembly health committee chairman for 18 years.

Ms. Murphy, the majority whip with six years in the Assembly, said she is a more natural fit on reproductive matters. “As a woman, it is relevant to this race, and I will keep using my voice as a woman,” she said.

Also running as Democrats are Joe Cohn, a lawyer from Lumberton; Brian Schkeeper, a 44-year-old teacher from Medford; and Sarah Schoengood, 30, a seafood business owner who was a plaintiff in the ballot lawsuit.

The Republican candidates are Michael F. Faccone of Freehold; Shirley Maia-Cusick of Medford, an immigration consultant; Rajesh Mohan of Holmdel, a cardiologist; and Gregory Sobocinski of Southampton, a financial adviser.

Our Coverage of the 2024 Election

Presidential Race: News and Analysis

Donald Trump’s conviction plunges the country into unmapped political terrain , a rare moment that could reshuffle a 2024 race that has been locked in stasis and defined by a polarizing former president.

After Trump’s verdict, interviews with dozens of Democrats revealed a party hungry to tell voters that Trump’s conviction makes him unfit for office , and hopeful that President Biden will lead the way.

In his first public outing since the verdict, Trump attended a U.F.C. fight in New Jersey and reveled in the embrace of male fans .

Flip-Flopping on Abortion:  Republicans in competitive Senate races have changed their approach on the issue of abortion , softening their rhetoric, shifting their positions and even embracing policies championed by Democrats.

New Jersey Primary:  For decades, New Jersey’s House and Senate primary elections were typically low-drama affairs. But this year’s dozen contests involve considerable intrigue .

Clashing Appeals to Black Voters:  Biden and Trump both see Black outreach as critical to winning in November. But their approaches differ in fundamental and revealing ways .

Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham standing on the bridge in a still from Star Trek Discovery

The week has barely started (if you’re in the U.S. and reading this on the Monday holiday: even less so!), and already there’s a whole lot of TV to get through.

With any luck, the long weekend gave you some time to catch up with things — after all, as our summer preview is any indication, there’s only gonna be even more coming soon. But while a bunch of new stuff might be coming up, there’s plenty to watch this week alone. Under the Bridge and Hacks are both wrapping up really strong seasons, while shows like Pyramid Game and We Are Lady Parts are just ramping up.

Here are all the best new TV premieres and finales this week.

Under the Bridge finale

Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in a still from Under the Bridge

Genre: True-crime mystery Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creator: Samir Mehta, Quinn Shephard Cast: Lily Gladstone, Riley Keough, and more

There’s nothing about the murder of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) that feels easy to swallow, and it’s a testament to Under the Bridge that the show has been able to balance the complexities of that reality in its seven episodes so far. Now, it’s coming to a close — one that no doubt will carry the weight of every ounce of tragedy in this story.

New shows on Max

The end of an era! By which I mean not only the season we got of 900 years in Star Trek’s future, but also Discovery , which wraps up this Thursday. It’s the end of the first Star Trek show of the modern era, and is free in a way Star Trek hasn’t been in a long, long while , all while paving the way for more Trek to come.

New shows on Peacock

We are lady parts season 2.

Genre: “Yeah, I’m in a band” teen comedy Release date: May 30, with all episodes Showrunner/creator: Nida Manzoor Cast: Anjana Vasan, Sarah Kameela Impey, Juliette Motamed, and more

We Are Lady Parts is back and ready to record their debut album. Which means it’s the perfect time for more bandmate shenanigans — including battling a rival Muslim band, playing a festival, exploring your “villain era.” All that and Malala Yousafzai is supposed to show up sometime this season!

New shows on Apple TV Plus

Loot season 2 finale.

Genre: Comedy Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creators: Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard Cast: Maya Rudolph, Joel Kim Booster, Nat Faxon, and more

The Wells Foundation — and Molly (Maya Rudolph), the billionaire woman who runs it — are nearing their greatest success yet. Which, of course, means reality is about to come crashing in with some major personal decisions. How will the dust settle in the season 2 finale?

New shows on Showtime

Couples therapy season 4.

Genre: Documentary series Release date: May 31, with one episode; on-air premiere at 10 p.m. EDT on June 2 Showrunner/creator: Dr. Orna Guralnik Cast: Real-life couples in therapy

It’s a new season of Couples Therapy, and an all-new cast of couples to undergo real therapy with Dr. Orna. The result will be unpredictable — couples therapy, after all, is about figuring yourselves out together, not necessarily saving the relationship. The good news? It will most likely be cathartic, one way or another.

'Star Trek: Discovery' ends as an underappreciated TV pioneer

Eric Deggans

Eric Deggans

Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in Season 5, Episode 9 of Star Trek: Discovery.

First, an admission: Though this column will offer a lot of discussion and defense of Star Trek: Discovery as a pivotal show, it won’t spend much time talking up the series’ current, final season or its finale episode, “Life, Itself,” dropping Thursday on Paramount+.

That’s because, for this critic, the last few seasons of Discovery have been a bit bogged down by the stuff that has always made it a tough sell as a Trek series: overly ambitious, serialized storylines that aren’t compelling; new characters and environments that don’t impress; plot twists which can be maddening in their lack of logic; big storytelling swings which can be confusing and predictable at once.

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

The show’s finale features the culmination of a sprawling scavenger hunt which found the crew of the starship Discovery bounding all over the place, searching for clues leading to a powerful technology pioneered by an alien race which created humanoid life throughout the galaxy. Their goal was to grab the technology before another race, ruthless and aggressive, could beat them to it, laying waste to everything.

It's no spoiler to reveal that Discovery ’s heroes avoid that nightmarish scenario, wrapping its fifth and final season with a conclusion centered on Sonequa Martin-Green’s ever-resourceful Capt. Michael Burnham and fond resolutions for a multitude of supporting characters (there’s even a space wedding!)

Still, this good-enough ending belies Discovery ’s status as a pioneering show which helped Paramount+ build a new vision for Star Trek in modern television – breaking ground that more creatively successful series like Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would follow years later.

And it all began with a singular character: Michael Burnham.

A take on Star Trek for modern TV

Discovery debuted in 2017 on CBS All Access — the streaming service which would become Paramount+ — facing a serious challenge.

As the first new Trek series in a dozen years, it had to chart a path which offered a new vision of the franchise without going too far — carving out a new corner in the universe of Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock not long after the release of Star Trek Beyond , the third feature film produced by J. J. Abrams featuring rebooted versions of those classic characters.

Producers set Discovery ’s story 10 years before the days of Kirk and Spock (originally depicted on NBC for three seasons starting way back in 1966). The new series wouldn’t be centered on a starship captain, but its second in command: Burnham, a Black woman who also happened to be the hitherto unknown adopted daughter of Vulcan ambassador Sarek, Spock’s father (she would get promoted to captain of Discovery much later).

A Black human woman who was raised among the emotionally controlling, super-intellectual Vulcans? Who Trek fans had never heard of over nearly 60 years? Before I actually saw any episodes, my own feelings ranged from cautiously intrigued to cynically pessimistic.

But then I saw the first episode, which had an amazing early scene: Martin-Green as Burnham and Michelle Yeoh as Discovery Capt. Philippa Georgiou walking across an alien planet – two women of color marking the first step forward for Star Trek on a new platform.

People once sidelined in typical science fiction stories were now centerstage — a thrilling, historic moment.

Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou and Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham in the very first episode of Star Trek: Discovery.

And it got better from there. Back in the day, Trek writers often felt hamstrung by creator Gene Roddenberry’s insistence that, in the future depicted by the show, humans were beyond social ills like greed, prejudice, sexism, war, money and personal friction. The writers chafed, wondering: How in the world do you build compelling stories on a starship where interpersonal human conflict doesn’t exist?

But Discovery found a workaround, putting Burnham in a position where logic led her to mutiny against her captain, attempting a strategy which ultimately failed — leaving humans in open combat with the legendarily warlike Klingons. Discovery also featured a long storyline which played out over an entire season, unlike many earlier Trek shows which tried to offer a new adventure every week.

'First, Last And Always, I Am A Fan': Michael Chabon Steers Latest 'Star Trek'

'First, Last And Always, I Am A Fan': Michael Chabon Steers Latest 'Star Trek'

The show’s first season had plenty of action, with Harry Potter alum Jason Isaacs emerging as a compelling and unique starship captain (saying more would be a spoiler; log onto Paramount+ and check out the first season). Fans saw a new vision for Trek technology, leveraging sleek, visceral special effects and action sequences worthy of a big budget movie, with design elements cribbed from several of the franchise’s films.

Later in its run, Discovery would debut Ethan Peck as Spock and Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, classic Trek characters who eventually got their own acclaimed series in Strange New Worlds . So far, five other Trek series have emerged on Paramount+ from ideas initially incubated on Discovery – including a critically acclaimed season of Picard which reunited the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Not bad for a series one TV critic eventually called among “the worst in the [ Trek ] franchise’s history.”

Discovery’s unappreciated legacy

Unfortunately, Discovery has taken some turns which didn’t work out quite so well. At the end of Discovery ’s second season, the starship jumped ahead in time nine centuries – perhaps to remove it from Strange New World ’s timeline? – placing it in an environment only distantly connected to classic Trek .

And while Discovery initially seemed cautious about referencing classic Trek in its stories, later series like Strange New Worlds and Picard learned the value of diving into the near-60-year-old franchise’s legacy – regularly tapping the show’s longtime appeal, rather than twisting into knots to avoid it.

There are likely fans of Discovery who would disagree with this analysis. But I think it helps explain why the series has never quite gotten its due in the world of Star Trek , initially shaded by skeptical fans and later overshadowed by more beloved products.

Now is the perfect time to pay tribute to a show which actually accomplished quite a lot – helping prove that Roddenberry’s brainchild still has a lot of narrative juice left in the 21st Century.
