Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Located on the northwestern coast of North Island , the Bay of Islands is an amazing port offered when cruising to New Zealand.

The Bay of Islands is frequently compared to Rio de Janeiro as its home to the second bluest sky in the world . 144 subtropical islands are nestled in this gorgeous area filled with Maori cultural sites and stunning turquois waters.

What to do in the Bay of Islands:

Check out the Bay of Islands Maritime Park featuring a lovely lighthouse, Cape Brett, and the infamous Hole in the Rock formation. Explore this top New Zealand cruise attraction which was carved by the sea and weather creating a 240-foot wide hole.

The nation of New Zealand was formed here in the Bay of Islands with the signing of the Waitangi Treaty between the British and the Maori in 1840. Make sure to visit the on-site Te Kongahu Museum and the intricately carved meeting building where you can enjoy Maori cultural performances.

Top Cruise-by Ports on a New Zealand Cruise

If you are planning to go on an Alaskan cruise, you can more than likely expect to have a couple days at sea cruising by some of the state’s top natural wonders. This alone is reason enough to splurge on that balcony cabin you have been debating about as you can sip on your morning coffee while watching whales and glaciers pass by.

Milford Sound

While there may not be a dock or really any port, Milford Sound is truly a treat on any New Zealand cruise situated on the western coast of South Island .

 Famously stated as the ‘ eighth wonder of the world ‘ by Rudyard Kipling, Milford Sound was originally carved by glaciers during the ice ages.

Most cruises to New Zealand feature this cruise-by port which is absolutely stunning in any weather. The fjord’s cliffs feature a steep edge , as they rise from the dark waters. Milford Sound offers mountain peaks scraping the sky and waterfalls thundering downwards from over 1000 meters .

Dusky Sound

Dusky Sound lies amongst plenty of other grandiose fiords at Fiordland National Park in the southwestern area of New Zealand’s South Island .

Originally named by Captain Cook as he sailed by around dusk during his 1770 voyage to the area, Dusky Sound is home to one of the area’s largest fjords.

If you are cruising during the rainy season, you will luckily get to witness hundreds of waterfalls gushing down from the green hills above. Keep an eye out for sleeping seals on Dusky Sound’s Seal Rock and Astronomer’s Point — a historic observatory dating back to 1773 overlooking the dramatic fjord.

Doubtful Sound

Frequently referred to as the “Sound of Silence” , Doubtful Sound is a classic cruise-by sight on New Zealand cruises. Similar to Dusky Sound, Doubtful Sound was named by Captain James Hook who decided to not sail into the narrow inlet as it looked a bit tight.

Similar to other fiords in the area, Doubtful Sound features two distinct layers of water that won’t mix . While the top few meters contain fresh water, the remaining water underneath is salt water from the sea.

Look out for the Hall Arm, Browne Falls, and Helena Falls at Deep Cove on your New Zealand cruise. These towering waterfalls are particularly strong during the wetter months of the year. Also watch for the area’s natural wildlife including fur seals, penguins, and bottlenose dolphins .

New Zealand has definitely been on my bucketlist for so long and I didn’t really think of doing it with the idea of a cruise. But now that you’ve mentioned it, I’m definitely convinced. I love how theres a lot of choices. My favorites are Dusky and Doubtful Sounds.

I have never been on a cruise before and I wanted to go on one last year but unfortunately that did not happen. I would love to go on a cruise that stops at those tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean. I have been to New Zealand many times and taking a cruise to that beautiful country will be amazing.

I never thought that there would be lots of choices of cruise in New Zealand. But I should since New Zealand is an island country. I found all of them offer beautiful destinations and views. But I would like the ones that go to Milford and Doubtful Sounds. The one that goes to the South Pacific Islands also interest me. It will be great to visit New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Tonga, Fiji, and the Cook Island.

New Zealand is on my dream list. I did not consider a cruise option yet. But it seems like an interesting attraction. I did not even know that there are so many possibilities and such a wide selection of cruises. It’s great that you have prepared such a detailed post with so many tips! I hope to take a cruise one day.

I have always been fascinated with New Zealand but had no idea about cruises there. Hence I found it immensely useful. Saving it for planning later when we are ready to visit. I would love to go for a longer cruise around the Polynesian islands which sounds exciting.

I have never gone for a cruise. And all my friends recommend New Zealand. This sounds so dreamy, especially Dusky and Doubtful sounds. The waterfalls and the scenery is so magnificent.

There are so many options to consider with these New Zealand cruises! I would definitely want to check out the Lord of the Rings sets, but taking a longer cruise around the Polynesian islands also sounds enticing. I’ve always heard amazing things about New Zealand so I am sure I wouldn’t be disappointed with any of the options!

Fantastic advice here on cruises around New Zealand. To be frank, I haven’t done a cruise and I havent been to this part of the world, so I wouldn’t really know where to start. I think I would prefer to do New Zealand for weeks with a campervan so if I was to do a cruise which included Auckland, I would have to combine it with other Pacific islands like Fiji and Bora Bora. Now that would be an experience to have with my family 🙂

Why No New Zealand Only Cruises

I am interested in a cruise that just goes to New Zealand. Just about every cruise that covers New Zealand that I have seen starts and ends in Australia. This means that you waste a bunch of sea days going to and from New Zealand and I consider sea days to be a total waste of time. Also. I have spent almost 3 months on an Australian land tour and if I want to return to Australia, I will do it on a DIY land tour.

Are there any New Zealand cruises that depart from and return to New Zealand only and do not go to other islands or countries?

Does anyone know why most of the cruise lines have these crazy cruise itineraries?

They have them because they're more popular.

Locally there's more traffic from Australia, and internationally, many want to visit Australia as well.

Also, as far as sea days, they help to break up the intense NZ port heavy itinerary and actually give some balance. Many also include visits to the Sounds which also wouldn't be possible otherwise -and are also a popular attraction of their own.

Thus, even though they don't suit you, they're far from "crazy."

If you have spent long periods of time exploring Australia, why not do the same in NZ? We have done extensive touring in both. NZ is very easy to land tour in.

Nothing crazy about any cruise, even if you don't like it!

Probably the real answer is simply population 4 million Kiwi's vs 23 Million Aussies guess where they're gonna get the best numbers wanting to board.

My personal opinion as someone who has both cruised and land toured NZ, if it is a 'once only' trip, do a land tour. A lot of the really scenic areas are not easily accessible from the Ports.

Don't get me wrong I thoroughly enjoyed my cruise around New Zealand but that is because I had already done 5 weeks land touring previously. Armed with a hire car and our Lonely Planet guide we saw some truly spectacular spots, especially in the South Island.

As for your original question, as everyone has said, most cruise tourism to New Zealand comes from Australia so it makes sense to start there and I LOVE sea days, gives me a break between port touring. In fact, I have always been curious why people cruise who do not like at least a few sea days as land touring gives you much better coverage when touring unless you are doing small islands (eg the South Pacific).

If you look at Princess they have a few itineraries that are one way Australia to New Zealand and then the NZ ports . So it is possible to fly into Auckland do the NZ ports and end up in Sydney or Melbourne. Or Vice versa start your cruise in Sydney or Melbourne then the NZ ports ending in Auckland.

As for "crazy" itineraries - I guess the fact that all those multitudes of ships are pretty much sold out every season means only you think they are crazy and everyone else thinks they are normal.

We have a friend who just loves sea days. If he could find one, he would probably gladly take a cruise that was 100% sea days. They have taken cruises in the Pacific that were more than 50% sea days. I guess different strokes for different folks.

I would quite happily (if budget permitted) travel constantly round the world with weeks and weeks of sea days in a row.

You could always treat yourself to an Auckland to Auckland cruise - yes it hit's Aus....yes it has sea days..........but then you could book yourself a land tour of NZ (camperhire or car hire) - then fly home. Suggestion only - absolutely no way out of visiting Aus...or sea days :eek:;):D Or just do a land content of NZ

This probably goes a long way towards explaining why you don't like cruise line itineraries in this part of the world.

If so, then it sounds best to go with what you regard them as, instead of the inferior substitute.

There are many coach tours of NZ, which involve no sea days.

Don me old China, there are airports in many places in NZ and flights to them from many other places including the US. So the good news is it aint difficult to get to, there are other means and you dont need to subject yo'self to 3 days on that there bus!

Silversea Discoverer has some New Zealand only cruises. It is an expedition ship, but a very nice one. And all inclusive.

The cruises out of Sydney target the Australians. I spoke to some of them during our 2012 sailing. They said that it was rather expensive to fly to NZ do a land tour and then fly back. So taking a cruise was very good value for them.

Another reason - Sydney is much easier (and cheaper) to get to for say people from Asia.

E.g. FlyScoot (a low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines) started flying from Singapore to Sydney (return) in 2012, and the fares were very attractive relative to say Singapore Airlines or Qantas.

So, cruising out of Sydney works for us. Singapore - Sydney is an 8 hour flight.

A lot more expensive to fly to NZ. (Singapore - Auckland, 10 hour flight) No low cost option either.

NZ doesn't have a big enough population base to support very many NZ-only cruises so would have to rely on tourists from outside NZ to fill the ships.

As others have said, there is the occasional NZ-only cruise, and some cruises are one way from Australia to NZ or vice-versa.

Check out Wilderness Travel. They have a 20 day circumnavigation cruise of both north and South Island on the Caledonian Sky.

Just returned from an Australia NZ cruise. Too many sea days. I would do a land tour instead of cruise. Not enough to see from ship in NZ.

For some there's no such thing as "too many sea days", and spending hours in busses or on the road isn't there idea of fun, but to each their own.

Some excellent questions, particularly as many on this thread have recommended land tours as the far superior way to see New Zealand.

New Zealand cruise vacations resumed in summer 2022, post-Covid – this is everything you need to know about sailing the country.

New Zealand cruises were very popular pre-pandemic and with travel trends showing holidaymakers are keen to go further afield – and for longer  – to make the most of their freedom, Down Under is back on top.

This is everything you need to know about cruising to this wonderful country on the other side of the globe.

Is New Zealand allowing cruise ships in?

Yes, New Zealand is allowing cruise ships in. Restrictions on travellers were slashed on July 31, 2022, as the country announced its ports were open for cruise ships and recreational yachts.

Did you know? Most New Zealand cruise visits take place between the warmer months of October and April.

Pre-pandemic, the Ports of Auckland reported that over 100 cruise ships called into Auckland annually, bringing in more than 300,000 visitors to New Zealand.

Is cruising a good way to see New Zealand?

Cruises around New Zealand are an excellent way to take in the vast country’s main attractions, although to experience the country to its fullest, a cruise and stay vacation is well worth it so you can experience some time inland either before or after your sailing.

Auckland is where most cruises around New Zealand start and finish and boasts shops, restaurants, art galleries and museums (the Auckland Museum and the Auckland Art Gallery are standouts) aplenty, all easily accessible from the dock. Forest parks, volcanic cones and gorgeous beaches are all within reach too.

City stops on cruises around North Island may include Wellington which is brimming with museums and galleries (the national museum of Te Papa is a favourite) as well as boutique shops, trendy cafés and restaurants – Lonely Planet once labelled Wellington “ as the coolest little capital in the world”!

The Bay of Islands is another beloved cruise region, the waters here are teeming with dolphins and other marine life. Cruise ships in Zealand will tender at Waitangi Wharf for all shore excursions, including visits to New Zealand’s first capital, Russell, and the house where the country’s most important document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed in 1840.

Other popular cruise areas in New Zealand’s North Island are Gisbourne – a place of rich history where the first Polynesian canoes landed and where Maori and Europeans first encountered each other when Captain James Cook came ashore from the Endeavour here in October 1769. Gisborne is also recognized as the Chardonnay Capital of the World.

There’s Napier (a historic art deco city located in the centre of New Zealand’s oldest wine-making region, Hawke’s Bay); Tauranga (a cool, coastal city with an idyllic beach); and Rotorua (rich in Maori history and a geothermal wonderland with its boiling mud pools, natural hot springs and geysers).

As for the South Island, scenic cruising through Milford and Doubtful Sounds is the best way to see the splendid alpine scenery of Fiordland National Park – think sheer cliffs, majestic waterfalls and beautiful rainforests.

The Marlborough Sounds is another place of stunning natural beauty on cruises around New Zealand, encompassing 1,500 km of coastline, bays, beaches and native forest. Some of the world’s best boating, diving, fishing and hiking can be enjoyed here are there’s oodles of wildlife to look out for, from penguins and fur seals to rare King Shags and dolphins.

There’s also the innovative and fun city of Christchurch – filled with gardens, galleries, markets and museums – and Dunedin, considered New Zealand’s architectural heritage capital. It found fame during the gold rushes of the 1860s and is now filled with Victorian and Edwardian buildings and has a fabulous art and fashion scene.

New Zealand cruises kick off with the start of the cruising season in October and end in April.

However, the summer months of December through March are best for New Zealand cruise vacations. Temperatures at this time range between 16°C to 24°C and the days are long, bright and sunny.

The majority of lines cruise New Zealand during the main cruising season, with many calling at Australia, too. Most New Zealand cruises depart from Auckland or Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane in Australia.
