Is Norwegian Cruise Line Kid Friendly?
By: Author Wandermust Daddy
Is Norwegian Cruise Line kid friendly? As serial cruisers we are often asked about the family friendliness of different cruise lines. In this guide we will take an in-depth look at the facilities and amenities onboard various Norwegian cruise ships to definitively answer the question “is Norwegian cruise line good for families”?
Important Note : This post may contain affiliate links which means if you click through and make a purchase I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you!
So before we get onto specifics that make, or don’t make, Norwegian Cruise line kid friendly our first questions has to be are kids? allowed on Norwegian Cruise Line?
Table of Contents
Are kids allowed on Norwegian Cruise Line?
Is Norwegian Cruise Line Good for Families
And the answer is yes, kids are absolutely allowed on Norwegian Cruise Line. Now there is a minimum age to go on any cruise for insurance reasons which is dependent on line, and amount of sea days on your itinerary.
For this reason if you are cruising with a baby check out this post for specific guidelines.
So now you know that you can cruise with kids on Norwegian cruise line we will look at specific features that make the line family friendly.
What Makes Norwegian Cruise Line kid friendly?
When cruising with kids generally speaking the amenities and on-board ship facilities are one of the biggest factors in making a cruise good for families. So in this section we will look at the facilities on board most Norwegian ships before looking into some more itinerary specific factors.
Do Norwegian Cruise Ships Have Kids Club?
The good news is that all Norwegian Cruise ships do have a kids club which is called Splash Academy.
The Splash Academy on Norwegian is usually operating free of charge, though there may be a few additional charge activities such as the Late Night Fun Zone.
The Splash Academy is aimed at children from 3 years to 17 years old and it is split into 3 age ranges.
Children between 3 years old and 12 years old are in one section and are split into Turtles (3-5 year olds) Seals ( 6-9 years olds), and dolphins (10-12 years). Normally there will be a choice of 3 activities in each session include something creative, something physical and sometimes computer games.
While teenagers have their own space onboard. However it is worth pointing out that not all of the teenage activities are supervised as they are with the younger ages.
If you sailing Norwegian cruises with a toddler or with a baby then there are also some sessions for them too. This is not a drop off session and parents will have to accompany them for the stay and play session. This is known as the Guppies program.
The last Norwegian Cruise we did we had a 6 year old and a toddler with us and I have to say that I was very disappointed with teh Guppies program but my 6 year old loved the splash Academy.
During our sailing on the Norwegian Getaway the Guppies sessions were relocated to a meeting room and the toys and offer for little ones was very limited.
For this reason I would say the kids club facilities are good for older children however are not great for those cruising with toddlers.
Does Norwegian cruise Line have Kid Friendly Pools?
is norwegian cruise line kid friendly
One of the things we were impressed with when traveling on Norwegian cruise line were the pools which are very kid friendly.
Norwegian Cruise Ships tend to have a variety of pool options including:
- a main pool
- a kids pool
- a splash pool and
- hot tubs
We love the fact that all Norwegian Cruise pools are heated which make them useable for kids even if you are cruising to Alaska with young kids .
However, if you are cruising with babies or children who are not potty trained then they will not be able to swim in Norwegian cruise ship pools. One thing that surprises many first time cruisers is the fact that children who aren’t potty trained can’t use the ship pools.
Can babies swim on Norwegian Cruise Ships?
There are signs all around the ship that swim diapers and unpotty trained children are not permitted in the pools. From our experience onboard the Norwegian Getaway we found this rule was enforced in a hit and miss fashion but it is worth bearing in mind if you are traveling with younger children.
On top of pools there are also some great slides on Norwegian cruise ships. But it is worth pointing out that these slides also come with height and weight restrictions for instance:
On Norwegian Getaway, the ship we most recently sailed on the restrictions were:
- Free Fall – Must be 48″ (122cm) or taller and weigh at least 99lbs (45kgs).
- Whip Waterslides – Must be at least 48″ (122cm).
- Family slide – Must be at least 42″ (106cm).
For this reason we think the best age for Norwegian cruise ships to use the pools are children who are potty trained or are over 48 inches so that facilities can be used.
Luckily our toddler was potty trained however it would have been difficult occupying him if he had not been.

Kid Friendly Facilities on Board Norwegian Cruise Line
Is Norwegian cruise line good for families
Although all Norwegian cruise lines have splash academy and pools, the other kid friendly amenities will vary from ship to ship across the fleet.
Generally speaking ships and their sister ships will have some commonalities in their features however Norwegian offerings are quite vast. The classes of Norwegian cruise ships are:
- Sun Class – includes the Norwegian Sun and Sky
- Jewel Class – which includes the Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Pearl.
- Dawn Class – includes Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star.
- Breakaway Class – Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway
- Breakaway Plus Class – Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Joy.
- Leonardo Class – Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva and future cruise ships.
However some of the most kid friendly amenities on board Norwegian Cruise line include:
- Rope Courses – this features on both the Breakaway Class ships – Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway . There is a junior course and an adult course which has a 48 inch minimum height requirement.
- Laser Tag – Norwegian Encore.
- Go Karts – Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Bliss.
If there is a particular feature you want it is definitely worth checking out the specific cruise ship and any associated costs before you book.
Are there Kid Friendly Food Options on Norwegian Cruise Line?
Norwegian Cruise line, like most cruise ships these days have three types of restaurants on board including:
- the buffet restaurant
- the Main Dining Room and
- speciality dining.
There may also be some other more casual eateries such as an Irish pub or burger bar. So with this in mind are the food options on Norwegian Cruise Line Kid Friendly?
My answer is yes and no.
At the buffet restaurant there is always a good variety of foods from standard American diner food such as burgers and hot dogs to sandwiches, salads, pizza and pasta alongside regional specialities.
There is also usually a kids section in the buffet section too alongside deserts and soft serve ice cream which can be very convenient after a long shore excursion day.
However I must admit that the remaining children’s food offering on Norwegian was very limited.
For instance in the main dining room the options were:
- Burger and chips
- Chicken tenders and chips
- Mac and cheese
- Hot Dog or
which is great and appealing to kids if you are going out for one evening meal however on longer length cruises – our most recent cruise was 9 night long and the fact the children’s menu stayed the same throughout the cruise and offered no healthy options was definitely a draw back for us a family.
But perhaps the biggest issue we had was in the speciality restaurants as these restaurants also had the same options as the main dining room and didn’t offer some restaurant specific specials.
Are Itineraries on Norwegian cruise line good for families?
One of the things I like about Norwegian is that there are a range of itineraries including but not limited to:
- Alaska Cruises
- South Pacific Cruise
- Caribbean
to name but a few. All of these itineraries are family friendly and should have family friendly shore excursions too.
So far we have done a Caribbean, Baltic, Middle East and Med Cruise onboard a Norwegian ship and all of the itineraries ave been really good for families.
Is Great Stirrup Cay Family Friendly
Norwegian Cruise Line Great Stirrup Cay
If your family decides to head on a Caribbean Cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line then a highlight is the private island which is known as Great Stirrup Cay.
Norwegian has to tender to its private island unlike Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line, whose private islands are adjacent. This means if there are high winds on your vacation this port may be cancelled.
However if you do get on the island it is a great place to be with kids. There is very easy snorkelling just off the beach and some amazing photo opps.
We also do recommend booking a tent or umbrella as there is very little shade on the island on the regular seating.
Also you may want to rent floats on the beach to add some extra entertainment for little ones.
Another top tip if you want to visit Great Stirrup Cay is to check what ships are docking at the island on your date as sometimes Norwegian will put two ships on the private island on the same day.
Although the island is good if there is one ship docked, I think it would be too busy to enjoy if two ships were docked here.
Best Age for Norwegian cruises?
We have cruised with kids at all ages from babies to teenagers straight through and although we have enjoyed all the crusises we have found some ages better than others.
Firstly Norwegian cruises are great for babies but I have to say it is not my favorite cruise line for toddlers. The reason for this is that there are no splash pads on Norwegian cruise lines and therefore no water play ares for children who are not potty trained.
Also there are no supervised kids activities or kids clubs until children reach the age of 3.
For this reason we recommend Norwegian Cruise lines for babies and then children over 48 inches in height as at this age they can use all the facilities like water slides, go karts and rope courses for instance.
Conclusion: Is Norwegian Cruise Line good for Families
So overall did we think Norwegian cruise line was good for families? I would have to say yes and no. Older children will love the variety of activities such as rope courses and go karts however if you are cruising with younger children, especially toddlers who are not potty trained then you may find things to do onboard the ship limited.
Overall we would say it really depends on the ship, itinerary and family. However we think that Norwegian Cruise line is good for families with older children (7+) but not great for young families with toddlers.

Are Norwegian Cruises toddler friendly?
Cruising with toddlers / Norwegian Cruise with toddlers
We are lucky enough to have cruised with children of lots of different ages on Norwegian cruise lines including a toddler. So is Norwegian cruise line toddler friendly?
I would have to say my honest answer is no not completely. That isn’t to say your toddler wouldn’t be safe on a Norwegian cruise or that you wouldn’t enjoy. However I say no because the things a toddler can do on a Norwegian cruise ship is limited.
If your toddler is under 3 then they won’t be able to use the kids club, and only have access to the Guppys stay and play sessions which we were not impressed by on our latest cruise, and there are no splash pads for unpotty trained toddlers. For this reason we would recommend other lines such as Disney and some royal Caribbean ships as being more toddler friendly.
And if you are cruising with a toddler be sure to check out our toddler cruise packing list .
What is the best Norwegian Cruise Ship for Kids?
There is no one best Norwegian Cruise Ship. Personally I always look at itineraries before booking a cruise vacation and then selecting the ship once an itinerary has been chosen.
However when looking at the best Norwegian cruise ship for your family I would look at
- the facilities onboard
- the water slides and
- the height restrictions on any of the facilities as there would be noting worse than telling your little one about an amazing ropes course etc and then not being able to participate.

Is Norwegian Cruise Line Kid Friendly?
posted by James Brockbank on November 15, 2021 // last updated on November 15, 2021
There’s nothing more exciting than planning the perfect family vacation. Finding a destination that everyone’s happy with and activities that everyone can enjoy is exciting but can be tedious. That’s what makes cruises so attractive!
Everything you could ever want in a vacation is at your fingertips, and there’s something for everyone. With so many prominent cruise lines out there, finding one that is kid-friendly is essential. Norwegian Cruise Line is very kid-friendly! They’ve even been voted the Best Family Vacation by Travel Weekly.
Before you book, take a look at a handful of the activities and programs that are offered to kids under 18.
Programs for Six Months to Three Years and Younger
Programs for three years to 12 years old, programs for 13-year-olds to 17-year-olds, late night /port play, family shore excursions , onboard family activities, kid-friendly food options, your kid can meet other kids, norwegian cruise lines is great for kids.
Splash Academy
Onboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships are what they refer to as the Splash Academy . These are mostly complementary programs offered to sailors 17 years old and younger. The youth staff on board splits the kids up by age group to ensure each group is participating in age-appropriate activities.
Even the youngest sailors have programs where they can enjoy a variety of activities. Affectionately known as Guppies on board, this age ground is for children as young as six months old to three years old.
There are two parts to the Guppies program. One is where at least one parent or guardian must be present. You can participate in sensory play, music and movement activities, and more with your little one.
Only on the Norwegian Escape, you’ll find the Guppy Nursery. This is a fee-based service where qualified staff will take care of your baby or toddler while you’re off at dinner, a show, or elsewhere on the ship. You don’t need to be present for this service, and you can pick up your child when you’re ready to turn in for the night.
Children aged three to five years old are part of the Turtle age group. These children can be dropped off at the Splash Academy and play throughout the day.
They have plenty of developmental activities to not only entertain but educate your children. They’ll also do arts and crafts, storytelling, participate in parades and circus school.
Six to nine-year-olds are known as seals when on board. Their programs are always monitored. This is the same with children younger than them and requires a parent to sign them in and out.
The seals get to learn all about circus life, including juggling, plate spinning, and more. They can also paint, play sports, engage in team-building exercises, play video games, and there are several theme nights throughout the duration of the cruise .
Next up are the dolphins, which are for kids ten to 12 years old. Your children in this age group will participate in many of the same activities that the six to nine-year-olds get to do. They have more engaging nights, and they even get to take over the teen club one night which is always popular.
For your teenagers, Norwegian Cruise Lines offers their Entourage program. This specific area is for teens only and has plenty of video games, movies, music, art, and a safe and cool place for them to hang out and make new friends their age.
There’s even a teen club where they can dance and sing the night away. This area of the ship is used as a hangout spot. This means that not every activity will be supervised by in-person staff.
Some events are, but they’re all being monitored via surveillance cameras even when staff isn’t physically present. Teenagers love the freedom to come and go as they please, but as a parent, you can rest assured they’re safe at the same time.
For your children under 13 years old, the late-night and port play options are something you may want to take advantage of at least once. If there’s an onshore excursion you and your partner want to do that’s not kid-friendly, you can arrange to have your kid with youth staff on board while you explore.
You can arrange for your kids to be with youth staff for those late-night dance parties or date nights. There are fees associated with these services, but you can find out more about that onboard or on the website.
There are plenty of activities for your kids to participate in without you. That being said, it wouldn’t be a family vacation without spending some time together. If you’re looking for things to do as a family, you’re in luck.
Whether you’re docked in The Bahamas, Hawaii, any port on the Mediterranean, or anywhere else Norwegian Cruise Lines travels to; there are always family excursions you can do together.
One of the most popular excursions for families with older children is snorkeling. You can book these excursions on board before you arrive or decide the day of what you’re in the mood for. Even lying on the beach for a day can be a wonderful way to spend time with the entire family.
For the more adventurous families, you can go ziplining, swim with dolphins, or whale watching when in Alaska in some ports of call.
Even if you and your kids enjoy spending time doing your own thing on the cruise, there will be times when making memories as a family takes priority. When you’re cruising with Norwegian Cruise Lines, you’ll find that there are dozens of family-friendly activities on board.
One of the top activities families love to do together is spend time at the pool. The kids can swim and play while you watch from your chair, or you can take a dip in the water with them.
Besides laying poolside, you’ll find other activities you and the whole family can participate in throughout the day. There are often movies being shown in the theater as well as some family-friendly shows almost every evening.
Other fun activities include trivia, bingo, scavenger hunts, and more. On specific Norwegian Cruise Line ships, you can play laser tag and experience virtual reality. Some ships have mini-golf, bungee trampolines, sports decks, and other ways to spend time with the whole family.
One of the biggest concerns when planning a family vacation with kids is worrying about what they’ll eat. It’s no secret that some kids tend to be picky eaters. When cruising with Norwegian Cruise Lines, you’ll have plenty of kid-friendly food options while onboard.
The biggest hit for kids is the 24/7 buffet. The buffets have everything you could want, from salads, chicken nuggets, French fries, soups, and anything a kid could imagine wanting. Whether they’re inside the buffet area or poolside, the soft-serve ice cream machines are always a hit with the kids, and adults too.
Dining in the main dining room for dinner is popular for most cruisers. It gives the family an opportunity to be waited on and served upscale cuisine. The menu in the dining room tends to be a little less kid-friendly at first glance, but they’re fully prepared with a kid-friendly menu that they’ll give you when they see there are children at the table.
If you want to give your kids a little break from the buffet or dining room, you can order room service 24 hours a day while onboard. The best part about ordering room service is that the room is casual and much like what you’d find at the buffet. Your kids will love eating chicken tenders, a cheeseburger, or a hotdog while lying in bed in their cabin.
Having your kids split their time on the cruise between spending time doing family activities and in the youth program can give them an experience they’ll never forget.
When your children are off playing in the kid’s programs, it gives them an opportunity to meet other kids their age and make friends. Meeting new children in the youth program can encourage your shy child to open up and meet new people they otherwise wouldn’t have met.
Whether they leave the cruise with a new best friend for life or not, they’ll always remember having the time of their life and the other kids they met while on their family vacation.
If you’ve been dying to take your family on a cruise around Australia, Alaska, Iceland, The Bahamas, or anywhere Norwegian Cruise Lines sails to, there’s no need for you to keep putting it off. Norwegian Cruise Lines is more than prepared to have everyone, even the youngest travelers, experience the best family vacation of their lives.
Cruising with Norwegian Cruise Lines gives you and your family opportunities for onboard and on-shore excursions. There’s even plenty of youth activities that your kids can participate in when you all want to do different things.
Now that you know Norwegian Cruise Lines is kid-friendly, there’s no reason to keep putting off booking your dream family vacation. You won’t regret sailing with Norwegian Cruise Lines next time you take a family vacation.

Areas for Kids on the Norwegian Gem Cruise Ship
The Norwegian Gem has plenty of areas that children and teens will enjoy. Family cruises are a great vacation for all ages, but kids want their own space to meet new friends and have fun. A cruise offers children and teens the opportunity to interact with kids from around the world in a safe environment in their own dedicated space.
Youth Programs
Norwegian Cruise Line has four youth programs on the Norwegian Gem:
- Guppies Programs (6 months–under 3 years): Guppies-hosted activities and open playtime are fleet wide for parents and babies. The drop off nursery has a fee.
- Splash Academy (ages 3–12): Parents can sign their kids up for the Norwegian Gem complimentary youth program. Kids can enjoy creative play, sports, theme night activities, parties, and more under the supervision of the youth staff. Children are divided into three groups: Turtles (ages 3 to 5 years), Seals (ages 6 to 9 years), and Dolphins (ages 10 to 12 years). While the Turtles have activities such as arts and crafts, painting, treasure hunts, and storytelling, the older children enjoy activities such as circus skills, painting, sports, games, and team-building challenges.
- Entourage (ages 13–17): Teens will love hanging out in a place filled with video games, movies, arts, music, sports, and (most importantly) people their own age. Teens will always find some fun in the Norwegian Gem's teen centers, and parents will appreciate that the fun is complimentary and supervised.
- Late Night/Port Play: Parents can drop off the kids and have a romantic night out. Late Night/Port Play is available on days in port and evenings for children ages 3–12. This group sitting is supervised by the certified youth staff on the Norwegian Gem, but an additional charge applies.
Kid's Pool
Small children love playing in the pool, and this one is just right for the little ones. The main swimming pool is always a popular place for families with children on a large cruise ship, and the Tahitian Pool Deck on the Norwegian Gem offers lots of fun activities for older kids and adults including a water slide, regular pool, and hot tubs.
Kid's Shower
For kids who don't like to wade or paddle, splashing in the shower on the pool deck is a good way for these younger kids to keep cool on a hot day at sea.
Tree Tops Kid's Club
Children ages 2 to 12 can enjoy the fun in the Tree Tops Kid's Club, located on deck 12. It has a jungle gym, cinema, arts and crafts room, and rest area. There is also a kid's pool and shower outdoors on the deck.
Teen's Leopard Lounge
The Leopard Lounge is a hip place for teens to just hang out with their new friends and enjoy TV, music, dancing, and sports. The Leopard Lounge has a disco, televisions, dance floor, a non-alcoholic bar, video jukebox, and table football. The Norwegian Gem staff members have all sorts of movie nights and parties just for teens. The video arcade, filled with the latest games, will attract those kids who don't get enough at home.

Traveling to new places is always a thrill, but it can come with some challenges. For example, which side of the road are you supposed to drive on ?
Cruises simplify the bulk of your vacation planning and transportation, as everything you need is in one convenient package.
A family cruise line will keep your children entertained day and night. I’ve rounded up seven of my favorites, which I’ll share in the first part of this guide.
Then I’ll recommend the most kid-friendly cruise ships for booking your next vacation.

Entertainment of all kinds awaits you. If you want to splash and play on your family vacation, you can ride the AquaDunk or AquaDuck water coasters, romp in Donald’s Pool or Goofy’s Pool, or enjoy the sparkling pool at Mickey’s AquaLab.
Pools are also divided for guests of varying ages, such as the Quiet Cove Pool for guests 18 and older, splash pads for kids three and under, and Satellite Falls for adults.
Live performances and musicals give each night a magical feel, while karaoke, trivia, and Disney character meet and greets ensure every minute aboard is exciting.
There are even kids’ clubs to give parents a break to enjoy nightclubs, fitness facilities, or the adults-only pool.
Your cruise will stop at Castaway Cay if visiting a Caribbean or Bahamian island. This island is exclusively for cruise line guests. Your day at Castaway Cay will include food and refreshments, beach access, pools and water slides, trails, and yoga classes.

The warm, opulent common areas add extravagance to your vacation, while kid-friendly activities and amenities will keep the young ones entertained.

The staterooms have portholes that allow the kids to glance out at the ocean whenever they wish, and with family-centric amenities at every turn, you might not want to disembark!

The nautical-themed staterooms are cozy and spacious for families, and split bathrooms, portholes, and private verandas also set the mood.
4. Symphony of the Seas
Calling itself “The Sound of Wonder,” the Symphony of the Seas through the Royal Caribbean is new and improved for families.
Hit up Sugar Beach and buy some candy, ride three water slides in one on The Perfect Storm, or learn to hang ten on the FlowRider. You’ll spend the days in the most fun ways possible.
Wonderland has whimsical food the kids will go gaga over. There are cocktails for the parents that are just as inspired.
Snuggle up to the Ultimate Family Suite, which boasts a private game room, a hot tub, table tennis facilities, and karaoke.
5. Mardi Gras
Carnival’s Mardi Gras is one of its latest and greatest creations, so you should expect the ultimate in entertainment.

10. Norwegian Joy
The Norwegian Joy starts in the Mexican Riviera and wraps up its journey at the Panama Canal but alternately travels from Miami to the Caribbean. The ship is nearly 1,100 feet long and weighs more than 160,000 tons, so she’s quite heavy.

50 Best Cruise Ship Water Parks and Private Islands for Kids
A nyone who’s ever cruised in the Caribbean or Mexico knows how hot a day at sea can get. With temperatures routinely hitting 80 degrees and above, being able to cool off onboard your ship is a must. And for families with young kids and tweens, nothing beats a cruise ship water park with water slides when it comes to keeping everyone happy and refreshed on days at sea.
The Best Cruise Ship Water Parks for Kids of All Ages
Plenty of cruise ships have pools and water slides, but not all of them are a good fit for families with tweens or kids under 10 years old. Pools can get crowded, life guards may not be available, and water slides may be too scary or have height limits.
That’s not a problem with the following cruise ship water parks that have just what’s needed for all ages from toddlers to tweens to teens. From smaller water slides, wading pools, and tipping buckets to water cannons, surprise water spouts, and dancing fountains, here are the cruise ships with the best onboard water parks for every age group.
FAMILY CRUISE DEALS: Kids Cruise Free: These 7 Cruise Lines Let Kids Sail Free
Important note: With the exception of Disney Cruise Line , kids on all other ships must be potty-trained to play in these cruise ship water parks; swim diapers are not permitted on most ships.
Splashaway Bay Aqua Park and Category 6 Water Park on Royal Caribbean
Splashaway Bay aqua park from Royal Caribbean is an ideal cruise ship water park for tweens or kids under 10 who love to zip down water slides, splash through fountains, or get soaking wet beneath a massive tipping bucket. There’s also a Splashaway Bay area for little kids at Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay .
FIRST TIME: How to Make the Most of Your First Cruise Vacation
The main attraction at the Splashaway Bay water parks on Royal Caribbean ships are the colorful water slides, the number of which vary by cruise ship. Generally, you’ll find one or two larger slides for kids ages six and older (minimum height is 42 inches) and one small slide for the toddlers. For the big slide, the maximum weight is 300 pounds. There’s also a splash zone with ankle-high pools of water and an array of other water features (think water cannons, whirlpools, and a drench bucket) to get kids wet and laughing.
For bigger thrills, look to the Category 6 water park on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas . At 17,000 square feet, this is the biggest cruise ship water park in the world, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Spread across two decks, Category 6 boasts a number of firsts at sea: the first open freefall slide, the first dueling mat race slides, the first family raft rides on a cruise ship, and last but not least, the tallest drop slide at sea. It’s a truly epic water park that’s most suited to daredevil tweens and teens.

Carnival waterworks on carnival cruise line.
Kids of all ages will be dazzled by the brightly colored Carnival WaterWorks water parks found on most Carnival Cruise Line ships. Though the space and design varies by ship, all of the Carnival ship water parks feature one or two water slides, a giant tipping bucket, and kiddie spray zones with fountains and water cannons that are perfect for younger kids.
WATER WORLDS: 14 Best Indoor Water Park Resorts in the U.S.
Most ships have either straight or curling slides, but Carnival Vista offers up the Kaleid-O-Slide . This water slide, geared toward the seven-and-up crowd, takes riders on mats down a 455-foot-long series of twists and turns while zooming through flashing kaleidoscopic lights and visual effects. Even younger kids will appreciate the Dr. Seuss-themed WaterWorks and spray zone on Carnival Horizon , which includes a massive water-tipping top-hat and two water slides. Some of Carnival’s ships also have racing slides that offer side by side thrills for older kids and adults.

Forest Aquaventure Park, AquaPlay, Polar Park, Aurora Borealis Aquapark, and Ocean Cay Aquapark on MSC Cruises
One of the largest water parks for young kids at sea, the Forest Aquaventure Park and AquaPlay area on MSC Cruises offer a full range of amusements for kids, tweens, teens, and water slide-loving adults. There are four slides, including two racing slides with clear sections that extend out over the side of the ship; an easy, open air spiral slide; and a funky slideboard option with neon lighting.
SUNSHINE STATE: 7 Best Orlando Water Parks for Families
For the smaller kids under 10, there’s a large shallow pool with fountains to play under, mini slides to give the kiddos a thrill, spray nozzles for getting mom and dad wet, and a giant tipping bucket. Above it all is an enclosed suspension bridge that might look scary and like a challenge to some of the younger kids, but is as safe as can be.
MSC’s Polar AquaPark, found on MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima , isn’t nearly as toddler-friendly as Forest Aquaventure, which is a good thing for families with older kids and tweens. The water slides here are decidedly teen- and adult-sized, as is the rope bridge. There’s a smallish water slide in the splash zone, and kids under 10 will get a kick out of trying to figure out which is the next tipping bucket to go over (there are lots of them). There are also a few sprayers and a fountain wall for kids to run through.
And the MSC World Europa has an impressive VR-enhanced water park called the Aurora Borealis AquaPark , which is geared more toward teens and adults than little kids. While it does have a toddler-only pool, the overall experience is best suited to bigger kids. The reef-themed Ocean Cay AquaPark can be found on MSC Euribia .

The water park fun centers around Winnie the Whale, with water spraying from her spout and raining from her fluke. Inside her mouth is a pint-sized slide for children under 10. Assorted water sprays are located around Winnie the Whale.

Limited to the eight and under set, the 1,500-square-foot Nemo’s Reef on Disney Cruise Line ships is filled with Finding Nemo characters, countless fountains, pop jets, and spray nozzles. There’s also a toddler-sized water slide with a slip-n-slide feel that will have young kids going back again and again. And, unlike on most other cruise ships, toddlers in swim diapers are welcome to play here.
KID-FRIENDLY CRUISES: 7 Best Cruise Lines for Families (and Their Most Kid-Friendly Ships)
For the tweens and kids eight years old and up, the AquaDuck water coaster stretches more than 750 feet, and a parent can ride together with their child on a two-person raft that goes up and down and out over the side of the ship.
In fact, each of Disney’s cruise ships has at least one water play area for younger kids. You’ll find a sprawling water playground called AquaLab themed around Donald Duck’s mischievous nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie on the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, and Disney Fantasy. On the Disney Wish, a very basic splash area called The Toy Story Splash Zone is geared toward toddlers age three and under, while the AquaMouse water slide—for kids (and adults) seven and older—is Disney’s first theme park-like attraction at sea.

Kids Aqua Park on Norwegian Cruise Line
All of Norwegian Cruise Line ‘s Breakaway, Breakaway-Plus, and Prima class ships have a Kids’ Aqua Park play area.
The water parks for kids on Norwegian Escape , Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Joy , and Norwegian Encore have the most to offer, including a large tipping bucket, mesh climbing structures, water cannons you can aim from above, and an exciting kid-sized slide. The water parks for young kids on Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway are less impressive, with just a wading pool, two very tiny slides, and a handful of splash elements. Which Cruise Lines Have Private Island Water Parks?
Several of the most family-friendly cruise lines have their own private islands where you’ll find water parks and splash areas of varying complexity.
Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay is a massive water-themed playground of an island sure to dazzle both adults and kids. Among the offerings: Thrill Waterpark with its two towers and 13 slides, plus the Caribbean’s largest wave pool and an obstacle course pool. Perfect Day at CocoCay is also home to the Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool, Oasis Lagoon, which has coves, a swim-up bar, private cabanas, swim-up islands with in-water loungers, and a kid-friendly beach entry.
Disney’s Castaway Cay has plenty of water fun to offer as well. You can snorkel, swim with stingrays, zip down water slides in the water park area, and even run a 5K.
Both Carnival and Holland America visit the 2,400-acre Half Moon Cay in The Bahamas. As with Perfect Day at CocoCay and Castaway Cay, there’s a kid’s water park area here as well. Families can also go horseback riding on the beach and swing with stingrays. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay private island does not have a water park.
Note that not all sailings from these lines stop at their private islands, so if this experience is of interest, be sure to check the itinerary before booking.

A cruise line for every type of traveler: How to choose the right one for you
- Cruise lines have their own identities and areas of focus, and some lend themselves more to certain vacation types than others.
- Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line are solid options for families.
- Aurora Expeditions, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises offer trips with a spirit of exploration at their core.
No matter what kind of vacation you're planning , there's likely a cruise for you.
Whether you want to spend your trip kayaking and scuba diving or prefer to lounge on a sun deck sipping a cocktail, cruise lines have a wide range of offerings. But not every line or ship is right for every passenger.
Cruise brands have their own identities and areas of focus, and some lend themselves more to certain vacation types than others (amenities can also vary from ship to ship within the same line). Here's what to know:
Best cruise line for families
◾ Royal Caribbean International ships have an array of onboard offerings for kids and adults. For example, the line's most recent addition, Icon of the Seas, has been billed as the ultimate family vacation .
The vessel – the largest cruise ship in the world – has an entire neighborhood designed for young families, a large water park and activities ranging from a FlowRider surf simulator to Crown's Edge, where guests can walk more than 150 feet above the ocean. The line's Bahamas private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, offers plenty of thrills and places to chill , too.
◾ Norwegian Cruise Line also offers a range of activities like free-fall dry slides, go-kart tracks, and high-caliber stage shows. Disney Cruise Line draws on a huge catalog of stories to bring magic to life on the water, with character appearances, themed dining and special events like Marvel Day at Sea .
◾ Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises also cater to families, and Princess Cruises and Holland America Line are solid options for multigenerational travelers. Mainstream cruise lines generally have kids clubs that are included in the fare, as well.
Best cruise line for adventure and expeditions
Adventure seekers may want to consider expedition ships and lines that offer sailings to less common destinations such as Antarctica .
◾ Aurora Expeditions offers a range of activity-centric itineraries, including Zodiac boat outings, kayaking, snowshoeing and more. Celebrity Cruises, meanwhile, has a vessel designed especially for the Galapagos Islands .
◾ Operators like HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) , Lindblad Expeditions and Silversea Cruises also offer trips with a spirit of exploration at their core.
Best cruise line for letting loose
◾ Virgin Voyages offers adults-only sailings and a unique onboard atmosphere with its immersive Scarlet Night celebration and innovative performances . There is also no main dining room or buffet, with a focus on a variety of different food and drinks instead.
▶◾ Guests can also find parties on other lines, such as Carnival . But the length of the sailing and the time of year play a role in a cruise's vibe. Spring break cruises, for instance, may be rowdier than times when school is in session.
◾ Parties can take different forms, too. Cunard Line , for example, hosts formal gala nights .
Best cruise for rest and relaxation
Upscale cruise lines can lend themselves to a more relaxed and pampering experience. Guests are less likely to encounter rock-climbing walls or ice-skating rinks but will find amenities like pools and carefully curated dining. The following operators are all in that category:
◾ Silversea
◾ Regent Seven Seas Cruises
◾ Oceania Cruises
◾ The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
However, even on mainstream lines, guests can often get away from the bustle of the ship in onboard spas and adults-only areas. Luxe ship-within-a-ship concepts like Norwegian's The Haven or MSC's Yacht Club can also offer a more intimate, laid-back experience.
What should I pack for a cruise?: Here are 5 essential items to bring
Best lines for river cruising
River cruising tends to be small-scale and destination-focused.
▶◾ European river itineraries from lines like AmaWaterways, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Viking often stop at a mix of marquee and less-visited ports, so guests aren't fighting crowds the whole time.
▶◾ In the U.S., American Cruise Lines offers a diverse selection of itineraries, from sailings on the Columbia and Snake Rivers to round-trip cruises from Washington, D.C. Viking also has a ship purpose-built for the Mississippi River .
