Study Away at NYU: In and Of the World

Kelly McHugh-Stewart

Assistant Director of Content Strategy and Development

  • Study away gives NYU students the chance to step out of their comfort zone and dive into the rich history of a new, global city.
  • Faculty and staff at NYU’s global locations play an active role in encouraging students to connect with their local communities.
  • NYU offers 15 global locations, including its degree-granting campuses in New York City, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai.

Enhancing Student Experiences

“I wanted to study away somewhere completely out of my wheelhouse, somewhere I could really dive into,” says Maureen Zeufack, a Business major at the Stern School of Business . So Maureen spent a semester at NYU Buenos Aires , where she immersed herself in its vibrant culture. “I’d never been to South America, but it was always somewhere I’d wanted to go. When I was there, I found a very cool arts culture. They have cultural centers where the city runs free concerts, events, and art spaces, and I really enjoyed that.”

Joey Duke, a Music Education major at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development , experienced the Czech Republic’s rich history of classical music directly during his semester away at NYU Prague . While there, he, too, got involved with the local community. Through the course Foundations of Music Education, he worked with the Prague Symphony Orchestra to conduct a musical performance aimed at helping children engage with classical music. “In the Czech Republic, classical music holds a lot of importance and is a big part of the culture,” Joey explains. “We were exposed to this great, classical-oriented education, and it was really exciting.”

A group of female-presenting study away students walk across a cobblestone street in Buenos Aires.

Prioritizing Culture and Place

It’s not only study away students who engage with their global communities. Leadership and faculty at each site also embrace local culture.

“We work hard to ensure students aren’t just coming to Accra to study, but to spend a semester in the region,” says NYU Accra director Chiké Frankie Edozien. “It’s important that our students talk about their time here with a sense of authority. They didn’t just study in Accra; they lived in Ghana, they lived in West Africa, and they understand the nuances. We want them to truly be global citizens.”

For Marcello Simonetta, a professor at NYU Florence and an expert on philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli, being in the exact location where the history he teaches took place creates a learning environment unlike any other.

“I’ve taught classes about Machiavelli in the United States, but it’s not the same as going to the Basilica di Santa Croce and seeing his tomb. Or going to the villa where he wrote The Prince ,” Simonetta explains. “It becomes so real; you can touch it, you can feel it exactly as it is. So being here, in Florence, is an enormous plus for my students and for me.”

NYU’s Global Network

Students can study away at NYU’s degree-granting campuses in New York City, Abu Dhabi , and Shanghai . What’s more, they can study at any these global academic locations around the world:

  • Accra, Ghana
  • Berlin, Germany
  • Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • Florence, Italy
  • London, England
  • Los Angeles, US
  • Madrid, Spain
  • Paris, France
  • Prague, Czech Republic

Millionaire banker who allegedly punched woman at brooklyn pride event touted ‘empathy’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The millionaire investment banker who allegedly slugged a woman in the face during a Pride event in Brooklyn over the weekend once touted the importance of having “empathy” and an “understanding” of others.

Jonathan Kaye, a managing director at Moelis & Co., was identified by social media users as the man caught on camera punching the woman and sending her crashing down onto a Park Slope street Saturday night.

In the wake of the brutal footage going viral, a podcast interview the Wall Street executive gave last year quickly resurfaced in which he preached about mentoring junior bankers and the keys to success.

“You should learn the hard skills as fast as you can, but in the end, it’s really the skills of grit and resilience, learning how to listen, understanding what is motivating other people, and empathy — those are the indispensable skills that separate you from a calculator,” he told the “LSE Focal Point Podcast.”

Elsewhere in the wide-ranging interview, Kaye spoke about his “rough” start in the industry and how “Wall Street could be a merciless place.”

“I learned some of the basic concepts that probably seem obvious, but when you’re in your 20s, you kind of have to learn them all from scratch,” he said.

“Those are things like doing what you say you’re going to do, being consistent, carefully managing your reputation, carefully managing difficult people, and staying away from toxic people.

Man punches woman in face

The interview came to light after Kaye’s New York-based investment bank confirmed it was probing the Saturday night violence.

“We have become aware that one of our employees was involved in a serious incident in Brooklyn on June 8.  We take this matter very seriously and are conducting an investigation,” a spokesperson for  Moelis & Co. told The Post.

The company wouldn’t confirm if the employee in question was Kaye or whether he was facing any disciplinary action.

Kaye, who has overseen the Global Business Services franchise at Moelis & Co. since 2013, declined to comment when reached by The Post.

The viral clip, which doesn’t show the moments leading up to the smackdown, captured a flustered Kaye allegedly walking away from the woman with his jacket streaked with liquid.

“She f–king threw s–t all over me,” the man, believed to be Kaye, can be heard saying as onlookers screamed that the attacker was an “a–hole” and a “horrible person.”

The woman claimed she was left with a broken nose following the alleged attack.

The NYPD said it didn’t have any information on the incident. Prior to his current role, Kaye worked at Citi Bank as managing director of its Global Mergers & Acquisitions Group.

Dutch royals visit Atlanta as part of Georgia, New York tour

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Gov. Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp welcomed the Netherlands royal family on the east steps of the Georgia Capitol Monday.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima began a whirlwind tour of Georgia and New York.

“Your Majesties, welcome to Georgia!” said the governor as the two couples exchanged pleasantries.

The Georgia Capitol was the first of many stops for the Dutch royals.

“This is very exciting. I see this trip as a highlight of my career,” said Jacob Veerman, the Consul General of the Netherlands here in Atlanta.

He said the royal trip could lead to more investments in Georgia by Dutch companies and more investments in the Netherlands by Georgia companies.

“What I think – and I speak from my heart – is that Georgia is very inclusive,” he said.

Veerman said one of his goals is to support Black businesses and show them the opportunities in the Netherlands.

“The other thing is also the link from slavery past to segregation and now to the inclusive community Georgia is,” he said.

The royals are also visiting the King Center, the Atlanta Beltline with Mayor Andre Dickens, and a hip-hop recording studio — among other places. Then it’s on to the port of Savannah and the state of New York.

Confirmed: PGA Tour and PIF to meet in person in New York on Friday afternoon — and why John Henry’s role is critical

One day after the one-year anniversary of the PGA-Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announcing the Framework Agreement, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Tiger Woods are leading a group that is meeting in person with the PIF’s governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan on Friday afternoon in New York.

Speaking to a handful of reporters, including Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig on Thursday , Rory McIlroy, who was named to the Tour’s Transaction Subcommittee a few weeks ago, confirmed he would be part of the meeting, joining remotely via video conference following his second round of the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio.

McIlroy said the group has talked three times a week with the Saudis. The New York meeting represents their first in-person gathering since March. The other members of the committee are Adam Scott, board liaison Joe Ogilvie, Enterprises chairman Joe Gorder and Fenway Sports Group principal John Henry.

“There’s going to be people in that room on the PGA Tour side who are going to take the lead,” McIlroy told a handful of reporters after his round. “And it’s not going to be Adam, Tiger or I. It’s going to be the business guys. We’re there to maybe give a perspective from a player’s point of view.

“This is a negotiation about an investment in the PGA Tour Enterprises, this is big-boy stuff. And I’ll certainly be doing more listening than I will be doing talking.”

Henry, whose Fenway Sports Group owns the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool Football Club and Pittsburgh Penguins, is one of the leaders of the ‘big-boy stuff.’ In an engaging profile of Henry, the Financial Times includes the story of how Strategic Sports Group, which already has invested $1.5 billion in PGA Tour Enterprises and potentially as much as $3 billion, came to be.

A year ago in June, a week after the blockbuster news of the PGA Tour-Saudi PIF’s framework agreement and intention to create a new for-profit company, Henry was in New York to attend a routine meeting of baseball owners.

Boston Red Sox owner John Henry, left., at Fenway Park before a game against the Minnesota Twins. Mandatory Credit: Paul Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports

“Henry couldn’t understand how it had come to this. Why was golf, the most well-heeled of elite sports, so desperate for financial salvation that it would merge with its ideological and marketplace opposite?” Sara Germano writes on FT.com . “Seated in a midtown skyscraper with a half-dozen of his fellow billionaires — all men, all American — at the MLB meeting, he saw a group of like-minded titans. Couldn’t they come up with an alternative plan for the PGA Tour, he wondered. Henry started asking around the room: would you put up some funds to invest in golf? How about you? To others present for the meeting, golf was the last thing they thought Henry would be interested in. “He has a lot of hobbies, but that’s not one of them,” recalled Sam Kennedy, chief executive of FSG and one of Henry’s closest associates for more than two decades. But Henry wasn’t making a passion play. He had seen a problem and was in a roomful of people with the means to fix it.”

According to the Financial Times, the baseball owner’s meeting became the launch pad of SSG, a consortium of American businessmen whose portfolios include all manner of global sports. As Arthur Blank, owner of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and PGA Tour Superstore, told FT.com, Henry’s pitch went like this: “the world of golf was in “turmoil,” and would he have any interest in joining an optional financial lifeline to the PGA Tour, either instead of or in addition to the PIF merger?

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank walks of the field against the Tennessee Titans during the second half at Nissan Stadium. (Photo: Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports)

Blank was among those owners, which also include NY Mets owner, Steve Cohen, who signed up. “We saw it as doing the right thing, as leading American businessmen,” Blank told Germano.

On the morning of Nov. 9, she reported that Woods invited the prospective investors to his oceanside offices in Jupiter, Florida.

“According to people who were present, Woods was joined by fellow players Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay, as well as the Raine Group’s Colin Neville, along with various staff. Several other players tuned in via Zoom. The SSG delegation consisted of Henry, his wife Linda, FSG executives Tom Werner and Sam Kennedy, Blank and Andy Cohen of Steve Cohen’s Private Ventures, among others.”

This paragraph from the Henry profile may give a clue to his role in Friday’s meeting: “Despite his reputation, Henry was anything but reticent that morning. ‘John probably repeated 10 times, ‘We want to be aligned with the players’,” one person who was present told Germano. “It left a good impression with the golfers, and SSG went back to their offices to polish the finer points of their proposal.”

Less than a week ago, Scott told Golfweek that negotiations were about to heat up and that appears to be true.

Negotiations between PGA TOUR Enterprises and the PIF continue to progress after an in-person meeting Friday between Enterprises' Transactions Subcommittee and PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and his team. The meeting took place in New York City as talks between the two sides continue to accelerate. "On Friday evening, an in-person session in New York City included the entire Transaction Subcommittee and PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and his team, where more progress was made." The PGA TOUR Enterprises Transaction Subcommittee, which is engaged in direct negotiations with the PIF, includes three active PGA TOUR players – Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Adam Scott – and four additional members of the PGA TOUR Enterprises Board:

Are Big Music Tours Really in Trouble?

High-profile cancellations from Jennifer Lopez and the Black Keys have armchair analysts talking. But industry insiders say live music is still thriving.

A band performs on a large stage; the kick drum reads Black Keys.

By Ben Sisario and Joe Coscarelli

For the concert business, 2023 was a champagne-popping year. The worst of the pandemic comfortably in the rearview, shows big and small were selling out, with mega-tours by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Drake and Bruce Springsteen pushing the industry to record ticket sales.

This year, as with much of the economy, success on the road seems more fragile. A string of high-profile cancellations, and slow sales for some major events, have raised questions about an overcrowded market and whether ticket prices have simply gotten too expensive.

Most conspicuously, Jennifer Lopez and the Black Keys have canceled entire arena tours. In the case of the Black Keys — a standby of rock radio and a popular touring draw for nearly two decades — the fallout has been severe enough that the band has parted ways with its two managers, the industry giant Irving Azoff and Steve Moir. Through a representative, Azoff and Moir said they had “amicably parted” with the band.

At Coachella, usually so buzzy that it sells out well before any performers are announced, tickets for the second of the California festival’s two weekends were still available by the time it opened in April.

Those issues have stoked headlines about a concert business that may be in trouble. But the reality, many insiders say, is more complex, with no simple explanation for problems on a range of tours, and a business that may be leveling out after a couple of extraordinary years when fans rushed to shows after Covid-19 shutdowns.

“I think it’s normalized back to the pre-Covid era,” said Rich Schaefer, the president of global touring at AEG, the company behind tours by Swift and the Rolling Stones. “Hot acts are going to sell tickets. Middle acts are going to sell, but take longer. And acts that don’t have a lot of heat on them are going to struggle.”

In a statement, Live Nation said that so far this year, sales are up from the same point in 2023, with over 100 million tickets sold. “Every year,” the company said, “some events naturally fall off for various reasons, and in 2024 across all venue types we’ve seen a 4 percent cancellation rate — which is flat to last year.”

In addition to Swift’s Eras Tour, which continues to be a phenomenon in Europe, hot events this year include tours by Olivia Rodrigo, Coldplay, Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan. Other festivals, like Lollapalooza in Chicago, have had notably strong sales.

Still, prominent cancellations of high-priced shows is another possible P.R. headache for Live Nation, the owner of Ticketmaster, which last month was sued by the Justice Department over accusations that it operates an illegal monopoly that stifles competition and results in high prices and fees. Live Nation has denied those allegations.

The key worry throughout the business is that ticket prices, which have been rising steadily for years , may now be so high that they are deterring fans from all but their once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list shows. Tickets, even for many major tours, no longer vanish instantly.

When Billie Eilish put her latest arena tour on sale in April, for example, upper-deck seats at some venues were going for over $200, and took weeks to sell.

A joint tour by the rapper Future and the producer Metro Boomin, who shared a pair of No. 1 albums and a chart-topping hit single earlier this year, has also lagged. Even with tickets as low as $44.50, the opening-night concert in Kansas City, Mo., in July, still has thousands of seats for sale at all levels. To the chagrin of underperforming acts, the strength or weakness of sales is now evident in real time on Ticketmaster, which displays blue dots for every unsold seat (and pink dots for ones being offered for resale).

Last year, the average ticket price for one of the top 100 tours around the world was $131, up 23 percent from the year before, according to Pollstar, a trade publication that tracks concert tickets.

Steve Martin of Paladin Artists, a booking agent for classic rock acts like David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, said that below the level of pop superstars like Swift, artists have become acutely aware of the economic pressures facing their fans.

“The meat of the business is made up of things like classic rock packages,” Martin said. “Those people are much more price sensitive. Working-class people are concerned about groceries and the price of gas.”

No single explanation can cover the range of problems in the live market this year. Some tours, like the Black Keys’, may simply be a matter of the band overestimating demand.

In 2021, the Black Keys left their longtime manager for a new partnership with Azoff and Moir , who also work with John Mayer and the Grateful Dead spinoff Dead & Co., and the band later praised Azoff’s “focus on touring and selling our tickets.” But even after a new album — the band’s 12th — was released in April, concert sales lagged, leading to the cancellations and a housecleaning behind the scenes.

In a social media post after the tour was abandoned, the group said it would “make some changes” to its touring plan to offer a more “intimate experience.” A representative for the band’s label did not respond to a request for comment on the management changes.

Nostalgia alone may not be enough to easily pack venues across the country. Lopez, though still a movie star and a tabloid feature, has not had a hit song in a decade . Tickets to see the ongoing arena tour from Justin Timberlake have been available on both the primary and secondary markets, with prices on StubHub sometimes falling well below face value.

Fans outside of high-demand markets like New York and Los Angeles do not always need to rush the digital queue the moment tickets go on sale. Some genres, like hip-hop, tend to move tickets more slowly than others, but can still sell out before showtime. The latest leg of Nicki Minaj’s tour, for example, is a sea of blue dots.

Many factors go into the price of the ticket, from the costs of gas and crew salaries — which have risen since the pandemic — to bigger-picture economics amortized over the course of an entire tour. Global promoters like Live Nation and AEG often offer artists a guaranteed payment covering all their shows; a bigger guarantee means that prices must be higher to recoup that investment.

Dan Wall, Live Nation’s executive vice president of corporate and regulatory affairs, said that while promoters may suggest pricing based on a deal guarantee, “it’s the artist’s team that ultimately decides ticket prices.”

Armchair analysis of ticket sales has become yet another element of modern fandom to be memed and weaponized, upping the stakes. As industry watchers on social media race to demonstrate the dominance of their favorites, screen grabs of available seats for upcoming concerts have gone viral, leading to media coverage.

“I feel like people online just sort of realized that you can look at seat maps and see how shows are doing,” said Sam Hunt, an executive at the touring agency Wasserman Music. “So I think part of it is that maybe not a ton has changed in the touring business — not every swing is a home run — but people are paying more attention to it and having a typically internet-y response.”

Still, the perception among some music fans is that large-scale concerts are more of a luxury than they once were.

Cliff Russell, 39, said in an interview that his two teenage daughters were interested in seeing blockbuster tours this year from acts like Rodrigo, Drake, Eilish and Swift.

But after the family, living outside Toronto, spent big for tickets to see Swift’s Eras Tour in November — with costs totaling near $3,000 for four tickets, “not counting transportation, parking, souvenirs” — spending another $300 per ticket for upper-deck seats to see another pop star just wasn’t in the cards.

“What was once a holy grail ticket price is now the average,” Russell said. “You’ve got to be really picky and choosy.”

Taylor swift makes eras tour wardrobe change as scottish winds leave hands ‘frozen’.

She never goes out of style — even when dressing practically!

Taylor Swift, 34, switched up one of her Eras Tour outfits while performing at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Saturday night, pairing short black gloves with her Vivian Westwood gown.

However, while the new addition complemented the glamorous “Tortured Poets Department” look, there was a simple explanation for the change: the cold weather.

After Taylor Nation highlighted the accessory on X (formerly Twitter) , one Swiftie quickly responded to the account, debunking any wild Easter egg theories.

“NEW BLACK GLOVES?!?,” they wrote. “Here’s my not-exciting theory: they’re for practical purposes. It’s chilly in Edinburgh. TTPD is long and she dances very little until Broken Heart. Her hands need to be warm to avoid another acoustic-set hand cramp. So, gloves. But ✨fashionable✨ ones! 🫶”

Swift likely could have used the wrist-length pair during her Friday night performance at the same arena, when she admitted to the crowd that her hands were “frozen.”

According to BBC , while the pop star initially paused during a mash-up of “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” and “I Know Places” so that a fan could receive medical attention, she needed to stop again shortly after, this time for herself.

“Oh God! Hand cramp!” Swift told the audience before massaging her palm. “I’m so sorry, everyone, this has never happened before, but my hand is frozen, I’m just going to warm it. I’m so embarrassed. My hand’s like a claw!”

The Sun also reported that, on the same night, two dancers wearing long butterfly wings were nearly blown off stage by the wind.

Still, Friday night’s show contained some happier moments, too.

Swift got to witness a real-life love story when two fans got engaged at the concert.

“I love performing this entire show in the sunlight ’cause I’m pretty sure I just, like, saw somebody get engaged over here,” she told the crowd, as seen in  a clip shared on Threads .

“Congratulations, wow!” she continued, sharing her excitement. “I just saw that whole thing. Man, that’s amazing … Thanks for doing that at my concert; that’s a big moment!”

Can Trump vote in November now that he's been convicted of felony charges?

Former President Donald Trump is joining the millions of Americans whose voting rights depend on their criminal records after a New York jury convicted him of felony charges in a hush money case.

But experts say Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, is unlikely to be disenfranchised by the felony convictions in the New York case, noting that it would come down to whether he goes to prison as part of his sentence.

Forty-eight states prohibit some or all Americans with felony convictions on their records from voting, according to the Sentencing Project, and an estimated 4.4 million Americans — about 2% of the voting-age population — could not vote in the 2022 elections because of those laws. The group estimates that more than 1 million of them live in Florida, where Trump established his official residency in 2019.

Florida defers to other state laws when it comes to disenfranchising voters who are tried and convicted elsewhere. That means Florida voters like Trump lose their voting rights only if the states where they were convicted would disenfranchise them for the crimes, too. And if the states of their convictions would restore their voting rights, so would Florida, said Blair Bowie, an attorney at the Campaign Legal Center who advocates for the end of felony disenfranchisement.

New York prohibits those serving time behind bars for felony convictions from voting, and voting rights are restored as soon as a person leaves prison. Those convicted of felonies who do not go to prison never lose their voting rights.

In the New York case, “the only way he wouldn’t be able to vote is if he is in prison on Election Day,” Bowie said.

A 12-person jury on Thursday found Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment to adult film actor Stormy Daniels near the end of the 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 11 and he faces up to four years in prison. But experts say prison time for a first-time, nonviolent offender is less likely . And even if he were ordered to serve time, the inevitable appeals process would most likely delay a sentence well past the election, allowing Trump to cast a ballot for himself in his third presidential bid.

In the event of Trump's losing his voting rights in Florida, there would also be avenues for him to regain them.

Trump could seek clemency to restore his voting rights in Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis — his former rival in the 2024 GOP presidential primaries — oversees a process that allows people with felony convictions to regain their voting rights.

Bowie said DeSantis typically requires those with felony convictions to complete the terms of their sentencing before they apply, but he has the power to change the rules.

Conviction in federal court — where Trump faces charges in Washington, D.C., in connection with attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and in Florida for his handling of classified documents — could pose a greater threat to Trump's voting rights in Florida, she added, as he would need to seek clemency in Florida or a presidential pardon to vote again in the state in that scenario. But it's unclear whether those cases will go to trial before Election Day.

Bob Libal, an organizer at the Sentencing Project, said Trump's experience is not unique.

"The confusion around President Trump's eligibility to vote is representative of a confusion that a lot of people have, and I think that that confusion dissuades people from voting," he said.

“It can be quite complicated. We’re talking about Trump, who’s a person who has access to lots of lawyers, and even here you can tell it’s quite complicated,” Bowie added. “For the average person who doesn’t have access to attorneys, it can be almost impossible.”
