Steve stricker wins sanford international for sixth pga tour champions victory of season, share this article.

pga champions tour sanford leaderboard

K.J. Choi and Steve Stricker posted matching course-record 62s on Friday to open the 2023 Sanford International.

Stricker then went 66-66 over the weekend at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to earn a one-stroke win, his sixth victory of the 2023 season and 17th overall on the PGA Tour Champions.

One of two Ryder Cup vice captains in the field (Jim Furyk is the other), Stricker had 16 birdies – including five in a row on the back nine during the first round – and two eagles over 54 holes. The eagles came on the 12th hole on Saturday and Sunday. He had only four bogeys on the week, including one the 18th Sunday, but a two-shot cushion before that hole assured him some wiggle room.

“There are a lot of guys up around the lead and it just became a two-man race there towards the end. It’s always a challenge. You’re fighting your game, you’re fighting your nerves, you’re just trying to get it done,” he said. “It’s so rewarding when you do, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s a lot of fun to come here and play and enjoy the area, enjoy the course. Couldn’t ask for a better week.”

Stricker picked up $300,000 for the win and in the process set the mark for most money earned in a season on the Champions tour with $3,956,127.

Bernhard Langer finished solo fourth, marking his seventh straight top-10 finish of the season, a streak that started when he won the U.S. Senior Open in July. He shot a final-round 64 and was 12 under for the week, four shots back of Stricker.

John Daly, meanwhile, had had his best finish in more than a year with a tie for eighth. Daly’s average finish this season is 65th and he has WD’d from two events. This week, he went 66-64-70.

There were two holes-in-one during the first round. Fred Funk aced the 17th hole using a hybrid from 199 yards while John Senden got his on No. 8 with a pitching wedge from 132 yards. There was another ace on Sunday when Jerry Kelly got one on the 17th hole.

Shooting his age or better

Dick Mast, 72, got in the field after Monday qualifying and bettered his age with even-par 70 in the first round. He matched his age with a 72 in Saturday’s third round. He beat his age by a shot during Sunday’s final round and tied for 67th, beating nine golfers, including Jim Furyk and European Ryder Cup vice captain Jose Maria Olazabal.

Share All sharing options for: John Daly’s 5-word reaction to epic, double-eagle round at Sanford International will hype up fans

John Daly, Sanford International

A familiar name lurks at the top of the leaderboard at the Sanford International, the PGA Tour Champions event held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

He is a two-time major champion, too.

That would be John Daly , who has not yet recorded a top-10 finish in 2023.

But he has a great chance to do so in South Dakota this weekend.

After his spectacular 6-under 64 Saturday, which featured a pair of eagles, Daly sits at 10-under par, two strokes behind Steve Stricker .

“I play for the fans,” Daly said afterward. “I love them. I’ve always loved them, and hopefully, it’ll be fun tomorrow.”

John Daly, PGA Tour, Champions, Sanford International

The last time Daly finished in the top 10 of a PGA Tour Champions event was in June 2022, when he tied for eighth at the American Family Insurance Championship.

Daly has struggled this season, mainly because of his putting and injuries.

“It was great,” Daly said when asked about his round.

“Made putts the last two days, and I don’t think I made hardly any eagles this year. To have two out there today really helped. Hitting the ball pretty good. Playing smart. Got to make putts. Made a few putts.”

The former Arkansas Razorback eagled the par-5 4th and the par-5 12th, as he made three other birdies to accompany one bogey Saturday.

“Hit driver, 5-iron into four and made a good 25-footer down the hill, and driver 8-iron into 12 and made about a 15-footer, so that helps,” Daly said about his eagles.

Daly had quite the gallery following him Saturday, so those eagles certainly fired up the South Dakota fans.

“They’ve always been great. Everywhere I go, they’re just so supportive,” Daly said.

“It’s just good to finally play a decent tournament so far for them because it’s been a rough year with the knees, shoulders, back, and everything. So it’s just great to be able to follow through again. Starting in Canada was the first time I could follow through in about seven years. I’ve had both knees replaced.

“It just feels good to get through the golf ball again.”

Daly will begin his final round in the penultimate group at 1:10 ET. Robert Karlson and K.J. Choi will join him.

Coverage of the final round of the Sanford International begins on Golf Channel at 4:00 p.m. ET.

2024 Travelers Championship final results: Prize money payout, PGA Tour leaderboard and how much each golfer won

T he 2024 Travelers Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Scottie Scheffler , who earns his sixth PGA Tour win of the season with a playoff victory at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Scheffler won the tournament in a playoff over Tom Kim after both players finished regulation tied on 22-under 258. Scheffler two-putted for par on the par-4 18th after finding the green and Kim wound up with a fried-egg lie in the guarding greenside bunker.

On the 72nd hole, protestors ran onto the green and delayed the final hole as the players were preparing to play their final shots of the week. The protestors were apprehended, subdued and arrested before Kim made a 10-foot birdie putt to force extra holes with Scheffler.

Tom Hoge and Sungjae Im finished in a tie for third place, two shots out of the playoff.

Scheffler won the $3,600,000 winner's share of the $20,000,000 purse.

Travelers Championship recap notes

Scheffler earned 66 Official World Golf Ranking points with the win in the 72-hole stroke-play championship, which helps his place in the world ranking.

Scheffler earned 700 FedEx Cup points as a PGA Tour member, with the PGA Tour points offered at the Signature level for this event.

A total of 70 (of 71) players finished the tournament after a 36-hole cut was not made in this event.

The 2024 PGA Tour schedule continues next week with the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic .

Bensel makes two straight aces at U.S. Senior Open

How to watch 2024 rocket mortgage classic, korda withdraws from england event due to dog bite, scottie scheffler outlasts protest on 18th green, tom kim to win travelers for 6th victory of year.

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) Scottie Scheffler had to wait out a climate protest on the 18th green and Tom Kim's tying birdie on the last hole of regulation.

Those events only delayed what seems to be inevitable on the PGA Tour this season: the best golfer in the world walking off with the trophy.

Shrugging off a protest that interrupted the tournament on the 72nd hole while the leaders were lining up their putts, Scheffler won the Travelers Championship on the first hole of sudden death on Sunday for his sixth win of the year, the most in one season on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods had six in 2009.

“When something like that happens, you don’t really know what’s happening, So it can kind of rattle you a little bit,” Scheffler said.

“That can be a stressful situation, and you would hate for the tournament to end on something weird happening because of a situation like that,” he said. “Tom and I both tried to calm each other down so we could give it our best shot there on 18.”

Scheffler closed with a 5-under 65 and a 22-under 258 total at the TPC River Highlands, and Kim matched him with a final-round 66.

Tom Hoge and Sungjae Im tied for third, two shots back, with Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Justin Thomas and Akshay Bhatia tied for fifth at 18 under. Bhatia was also in the final group that was disrupted by the protest.

“I was scared for my life,” he said. “I didn’t even really know what was happening. ... But thankfully the cops were there and kept us safe, because that’s, you know, that’s just weird stuff.”

It was Scheffler’s fourth victory of the year in the tour’s $20 million, limited-field signature events, earning him a payday of $3.6 million. He also won the Masters and The Players Championship.

And Scheffler still has two months to go.

“As much as I love him, I would have loved to take that away from him,” said Kim, who shares a birthday and a friendship with Scheffler. “But I’m happy for him, and after I tapped out, after he tapped out, he said some really nice words and it meant a lot to me.”

Scheffler had a one-stroke lead heading to the 18th green on Sunday when six people stormed the course, waving smoke bombs that left a red and white powdery residue on the putting surface. Some wore white T-shirts with the words “NO GOLF ON A DEAD PLANET” in black lettering.

They were tackled by police and taken off.

The activist group Extinction Rebellion, which has a history of disrupting events around the world, claimed responsibility for the protest. In a statement emailed to The Associated Press, the group blamed climate change for an electrical storm that injured two people at a home near the course on Saturday.

After a delay of about five minutes, when tournament officials used towels and blowers to remove the powder and any other marks that might affect play, Scheffler left a 26-foot putt from the fringe on the edge of the cup and tapped in for par.

Kim then made a 10-foot birdie putt for a 66 to match Scheffler.

“Obviously it is a disruption and you don’t want it to happen, but for me it just kind of slowed things down,” Kim said. “It took the meaning of the putt away for a second. Because for the past 17 and a half holes all you’re thinking about is golf, and suddenly when that happens your mind goes into a complete - like, you’re almost not even playing golf anymore. I thought it was a dream for a second.”

The hole location on the 18th was moved for the playoff to avoid the parts of the green affected by the protesters.

Scheffler hit his approach in the playoff to 11 feet while Kim found a greenside bunker. Kim's blast from a plugged lie ran 36 feet past the hole, leaving Scheffler with an easy two-putt par for the victory. Afterward, his wife, Meredith, met him on the green, carrying their 6-week-old son, Bennett.

“It’s fun competing against your friends,” Scheffler said. “But at the same time, it’s difficult. Because part of me wants him to miss the putt and part of me wants him to make the putt. ... But he should remember that putt he made on 18, because it was pretty special. And he’s a great player and a great champion."

Coming off a tie for 41st in the U.S. Open – by far his worst finish of the year -- Scheffler trailed Kim by three strokes after the first round, by two after the second round and by one heading to the tee on Sunday.

Scheffler took a one-shot lead over Kim with three straight birdies on Nos. 13-15 - he had putts for eagle on two of them. While Hoge signed for a 62 to finish at 20 under, and Im joined him there, Scheffler and Kim matched pars over the next two holes to set up the surprising finish.

Scheffler and Kim share a June 21 birthday - Scheffler is six years older - and they celebrated with New Haven pizza before the tournament about 30 miles north. The Dallas-area residents played together in the final group on Sunday, chatting and joking around.

But only one of them could hold the trophy at the end.

And just like it’s been so often, it was Scheffler.

Kim said being in a pack of leaders with his birthday buddy allowed him to focus on his own game.

“You don’t need to worry about him, because he’s going to play well,” Kim said. “Obviously he’s a phenomenal player, world No. 1, all those titles. But at the same time for me he’s just Scottie Scheffler, he’s just a good friend.

“To come down with someone that I play a lot of golf with, who beats me a lot at home - and, unfortunately, he beat me in the playoff too,” Kim said. “But it definitely made it a lot more enjoyable out there.”

Cameron Young shoots 59 at Travelers Championship for 13th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history

pga champions tour sanford leaderboard

Cameron Young began the third round at the 2024 Travelers Championship buried beneath dozens of golfers on the leaderboard all vying for the tournament championship.

He ended it not only atop that leaderboard, but with a nice piece of history associated with his name. The former Wake Forest golfer turned in one of the most impressive rounds not only of his career, but on the PGA Tour this year, shooting an 11-under 59 Saturday at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.

It was just the 13th time in PGA Tour history that a player recorded a sub-60 round, and the first since Scottie Scheffler in 2020. Young's 59 was one shy of tying the course record at TPC River Highlands, which Jim Furyk set with a 58 in 2016 at the Travelers Championship — the lowest round in PGA Tour history.

REQUIRED READING: Cameron Young shoots the 13th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history at the Travelers Championship

Here's what to know of his third-round score at the TPC River Highlands:

Cameron Young score

The 27-year-old Young finished with seven birdies, nine pars and two eagles. Both eagles came on par-four holes.

The highlight of the day came on the third hole, where, after a 295-yard drive, Young holed out from 142 yards away.

His other eagle came on the 15th hole, when his drive reached the green on the 280-yard hole and he sank a putt from a few feet out. Young completed his round and cemented his sub-60 score with a 9-foot par putt on the 18th hole.

Cameron Young college

A Scarborough, New York native, Young played at Wake Forest from 2015-19 and earned all-ACC recognition in each of his final three seasons, including an honorable mention all-American nod as a junior in 2017-18.

After turning pro in 2019 and joining the PGA Tour in 2022, Young has seven runner-up and two-third place finishes across 67 PGA Tour events played. He has yet to earn a PGA Tour win.

Entering the Travelers Championship, he was No. 23 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
