The Basic Modern 3 Fairway Wood

The Modern 3 Fairway Wood

For many golfers, a modern #3 fairway wood makes a very good and correct choice, here’s why:

With a 13 or 14 degrees of loft, it provides more loft than a driver wood, which typically has only about 10.5 degrees of loft. The additional loft makes it much easier to hit the ball high with forgiveness, and gives you the ability to work the ball with a draw or fade. In fact, some golfers can hit their  three wood club about the same length as their driver but with more accuracy.

The club-length of a #3 wood is about 1 inch shorter than a driver wood, making it easier to consistently hit the sweet spot.

The #3 wood will have about 10 more grams of sole head-weight compared to a driver wood. This additional sole weight will help you in two ways to cure; getting the ball up off the fairway and hitting out of the rough.

The #3 wood gives you added flexibility to hit the ball high over trees and carry over valleys. Some golfers like the fact that there 3 wood head size is a lot smaller than their driver. They feel less wind residence then with their 460 cc driver head.

My pick for the best overall 3 wood is the TaylorMade Qi10, or as I like to call it, my new every-round “gamer.”

I call the Qi10 the best 3 wood on the market because you have three different fairway woods at your disposal in one tech-packed club.

Its 50-gram sliding weight, highly adjustable hosel, and driver-style Twistface clubface make it forgiving, fast, and highly customizable for a tinkerer like me.

It replaced my previous gamer for two critical reasons: It’s long as h*ll off the tee and launched higher out of the fairway, turning my long game into a bigger strength.

The best budget 3 wood on the market is the TourEdge C524 because it’s effortless to hit off all lies, flies ridiculously straight and is the most affordable option on our list.

Upon unboxing the C524, I was immediately surprised by its appearance. It’s not that it’s off-putting in the slightest; I’ve just never seen a 3-wood shaped like this.

It has a larger head than average, a huge clubface, and a ridge down the center of the head that helped me a ton with alignment for straighter shots.

While most fairway woods on the market are highly adjustable these days, the TourEdge isn’t—perfect for golfers who want to learn one club and all its tricks.

If you’d like a budget-friendly 3 wood that’s long, straight, and easy to hit well, the TourEdge C524 is your top pick.

Callaway Ai Smoke MAX

• Golfers wanting a distance boost in their 3-wood
• Players needing more reliability in their fairway wood
• Golfers who like to tinker with their clubs

The Ai Smoke MAX is marketed toward players who crave consistency. I’m here to tell you it provided that plus the most distance of any fairway wood available in my testing.

I have to preface this by saying I am not a “busy design club head” fan, but the carbon fiber is hard to notice on its hugely oversized club head.

The Ai Smoke MAX looks massive behind the golf ball in both length and width, inspiring more confidence in me that I had a larger sweet spot to hit.

Being able to use the hosel adjustments to influence my ball flight without sacrificing any length was the best feature of all.

If you could use a seriously reliable distance boost in the fairway wood department, look no further than the Callaway Ai Smoke MAX.

Most Forgiving

After testing the G430 MAX, I can tell you it max imized my carry distance, launch angle, and ability to hit bombs at my target from the fairway and tee.

The PING G Series has developed a “Unicorn” nickname around the equipment industry, and the G430 MAX is no different.

This 3 wood launches high immediately off the clubface without ballooning with tons of spin. I loved how the higher launch increased my carry distances without sacrificing any accuracy.

Its head is big, wide, flat, and confidence-inspiring to every friend I let hold it.

If you want a premium, forgiving 3 wood that’s just as high launching as it is forgiving and straight, look nowhere else but the G430 MAX.

Cobra darkspeed x.

• Golfers wanting stability and effortless launch
• Players who enjoy club aesthetics
• Those who want an off the tee weapon

The Cobra DarkSpeed X is arguably the cleanest-looking fairway wood on our list, and it has some of the highest launch and forgiveness levels to boot.

The DarkSpeed lives up to its name. It’s incredibly black, and looks mean sitting behind the ball (like you’re about to pound it).

Sitting low and deep in its sole is a massive weight port that effortlessly launches the ball high (with a neutral to draw bias flight) and makes the club sit extra flat to the ground.

This flat and stable feeling made me confident I could hit it straighter from fairway lies, which I thankfully did.

If looks and higher ball flights could kill, the Cobra DarkSpeed X would be a murderer, making it a great final pick on our list.

What To Consider When Buying 3 Woods

If you are still trying to decide what to look for when finding the best 3 wood for your golf game, this section is for you.

Give Yourself The Best Chance at Success

Finding fairway woods you love using is notoriously tricky, even for PGA TOUR players (hence why you see someone like Tiger Woods with a 6+ year old fairway wood ).

Here’s how we go about finding a new 3 wood for our golf bags:

Testing Fairway Woods

If you’re fortunate enough to live in an area with demo clubs for you to try, we strongly encourage you to at least hit/test multiple 3 woods before deciding.

You may not choose any of the fairway woods you test, but at least you’ll have a better grasp of what’s available, what you like to look at behind the golf ball, and what fairway wood features like and don’t like.

Adjustable or Fused Club Head

Are you the type of player that loves to experiment and tinker with your clubs? Or are you in the category of “If I can hit it well, why mess with it?”

Now this comes about b/c I've recently cut my 915 D2 down to 44.5" from 45.5" and even though its just an inch I feel the clubs easier to control. So i'm curious what the proper length of my 3wood should be? If there's a standard or preferred length? I also use a XR fairway which I believe is longer than average anyway.

Its all personal preference but like my 3 wood at 43 or just under. 42.5-43 is my comfort zone. I am comfortable with my driver at 45.

I'm going to take mine down to 42.5" and try to gain more control. I'm impressed with the control I've gained from my driver being shortened. Hopefully I get the same results from the 3w.

There is no real standard anymore, but with that driver length, a 1-1/2" to 2" length difference between the driver and 3wd usually works fairly well for most. But that's just a starting place, don't hesitate to play around with different lengths (choking up) to find what works best for you.

I play mine at 42 inches. It just feels best at that length. 43 is pretty standard.

Stopped by golfsmith this morning and had it cut down. Looking forward to playing it tomorrow. Not sure if my hybrid is supposed to fall in line with the 2" length increment change but I looked it up on Titleist website and it measure's 40.5" stock. So i'm currently at 44.5" Driver, 42.5" 3wood, 40.5" 19* hybrid. In my mind thats great b/c I like things to fall in line equally, hopefully that translates to me being more confident and controlled.

43" is standard. I play a shorter 5 wood but maintained D3 swingweight it in for more control. I mostly use my 3 wood off the tee so 43" is comfortable for me where 42" in the 5 wood gets it done. I also don't carry a 3 iron or hybrid so it cut a little distance off the 5 wood which works out perfectly.

42.5-43 here also. Bubba plays his at 43 I believe and he's a tall guy. Tiger I think I saw plays his 5 wood at like 41.5 (as do I). He's 6'1 or 6'2.

Only issue with shortening shafts a bunch is gaining the swing weight back. Glad I own a hotmelt gun just for that reason.

Agreed on a shorter shaft, I play 44.25" on the driver and 41.75" on the 4W, way more control and accuracy, did not lose any distance either...but like stated above it is up to what works best for you, I have caddied for the pros for the last 6 years and they differ in lengths, so get fitted and go shoot low scores...good luck

+1 on setting the right swingweight. I play all Titleist so it is easy enough to just buy a weight kit.

As an addition to playing the shorter length in the 5 wood what I found was the by playing it a little shorter I tend to swing it a little more upright and take a little baby divot. I make much better contact and the ball tends to land more softly.

On the flip side my 3 wood gets about 95% of its use off the tee and I like to play it at 43".

I've got a frequency machine so I tip it to the frequency I like. It takes a little playing around with but I get it to where it needs to be in the end.

Good to know, I wouldn't have thought to add weight. Only one inch being cut requires some new weighting?

If you wanted the same swing weight, it would require about 12 grams!

But unfortunately, the same swing weight does not necessarily mean the same feel.

Whether some additional weighting is needed after cutting down a shaft, and how much, depends on quite a lot of different things. It takes some trial and error (usually done with some lead tape) to really figure it with any degree of accuracy.

I think I know what you mean by feel, but how you define the feel more than using swingweight to get to it?

The million dollar question that club makers/fitters have been trying to find a good answer to for as long as anyone can remember.

MOI is generally considered more accurate than swing weight in this respect but still has it's limitations since it's not completely independent from the full static weight of the club.

The problem is (at least as I see it), that this feel is a product of both the specs of the club (static weight and MOI the club) and the specific swing mechanics of the individual. So very hard to come up with a "one equation fits all" approach. And "the feel" will always be a potentially complex combination of both the effort needed to rotate the club (MOI), where the actual center of rotation might be (to accurately compute the MOI), and the effort to impart linear motion to the club (static weight). e.g. static weight might play a bigger role for someone with a quicker transition vs someone with a smoother transition. MOI might play a bigger role for someone with a very late release vs someone with an early release.

I think many would be better off with a length shorter than standard, which has changed(gotten longer) over the many years of this game. I play my driver at 44" and 4-wood at 42". I think fairway woods are hard enough for most amateurs to hit off the deck and a longer length just makes it worse, unless they have a very well timed swing. I had my club tip weighted so the feel wasn't affected by the length change. With all that said, go get fit and make sure they address the length of your clubs.

Tom Wishon has a lot of good stuff on here about club length (see his chart above). In short he basically states that "standard" club lengths off of the shelf are way too long for the average golfer and lead to very inconsistent play.

My wrist-to-floor measurement is 36". I have been playing my woods at the following and have seen much greater consistency since experimenting with this.

Driver - 44"

3Wood - 42"

5Wood - 41"

Now this comes about b/c I've recently cut my 915 D2 down to 44.5" from 45.5" and even though its just an inch I feel the clubs easier to control. So i'm curious what the proper length of my 3wood should be? If there's a standard or preferred length? I also use a XR fairway which I believe is longer than average anyway.   Thanks in advance, Jon

Driver and wood length are fit to the golfer's ABILITY, never with anything to do with golfer height or arm length or wrist to floor measurement. And it is a good idea to not try to tie the 3w length to the driver length in some type of automatic assumption for x" shorter on the 3w compared to the driver length. Hitting a 3w off the deck has its own different ability requirements vs hitting a driver off a tee.

So if by experimentation you find that your best driver length is 44.5, You never subtract 1" or 1 1/2" or any preset assumption to figure out your 3w length. You go at the 3w with the same experimentation you did with the driver that led you to your best driver length. Rarely do you find a player who hits 43" better than 42.5" or even 42" with the 3w because you are talking trying to hit a 14-15* loft head with the ball sitting on the ground. That's actually more skill than hitting a driver off a tee.

And the idea is to find what is the longest length that you can achieve your highest percentage of on center hits for shots hit off the deck, to hit the ball well up in the air to fly. For most, that is more than likely UNDER 43", if you are really honest with your evaluation. And at the end of the day, you always ERR ON THE SIDE OF SHORTER with the 3w. Because when it comes down to it, a half inch is nothing in terms of distance effect for most golfers, but it can be quite important with regard to on center hit and higher launch achievement with the 3w.

So if you are torn between 43 and 42.5, go the shorter one. If you are torn between 42.5 and 42, go with the 42. Golf is a game of playing the percentages, not betting on the higher risk. if you only hit the 3w four times in a round, you want the percentages in your favor to achieve at least 3 of those to be really good, solid high flying shots. Going with the half inch less than you might think is a really good way to do that.

Then once you have your best 3w length, from there with the other woods you go down 1" in length for each 2 number change down in the woods as your guide. 3w = 42.5", then 5w = 41.5" as your starting point, and you see how that goes. You never want only a half inch between 3w/5w or between 5w/7w because for later release players that can compress the distance gaps too much.

It has been in the last 2 yrs that I have DUMPED THE DRIVER LENGTH FROM THIS CHART - because I see driver and wood length as being related to ability of the golfer and having nothing to do with wrist to floor. This chart comes from before I had that realization in my fitting research, so now when I see this chart I AM EMBARRASSED !!!!! Because it is bogus for the driver length now !!!

+1. I struggled with my FWs mightily for years. I started playing a weak 42" 5 wood after playing with only a 43" 3 wood in the bag for a long time. I couldn't believe what a shorter 5 wood has done for the top end of my bag and I couldn't believe that a 1/2" could make such a drastic difference.

I don't think there is a hard and fast rule when it comes to playing length but I would suggest Tom's chart as a starting point and then adjust from there. In hindsight I should have started at the longest length that I could hit solidly consistently and then adjust the loft to achieve the distance I was looking for.

It may not have much to do with wrist-to-floor, but is it not still true that the average golfer will drive the ball much more consistently with a 44" driver as opposed to a 45" driver?

This topic is so important, wish there was more understanding of it among golfers. The big club making companies are doing us no favors with these super long shafts... and I'm 6'3"

And you measure by running the ruler from the hosel line up to the grip in playing position right? Putters are the only club measured from the center of the face?

What is the Best 3 Wood Length (41″, 42”, 43”, 44”, 45”)

What is the Average Length of a 3 Wood?

The average length of a 3 wood golf club is 43 inches. A men’s 3 wood is 43 inches long, while a Women’s 3 Wood is 42.25 inches.

The 3 wood is available in two variations for the shaft. 3 woods with stainless steel shafts are slightly shorter than those with graphite shafts for both men and women.

Men’s 3 woods with stainless steel shafts have an average length of 43 inches while those with graphite shafts are 43.25 inches long. On the other hand, women’s 3 wood golf clubs are slightly smaller than their corresponding men’s clubs irrespective of the shaft used.

Women’s 3 woods with stainless steel shafts are 42.25 inches long whereas clubs with graphite shafts are 42.75 inches long.

Some manufacturers offer their steel 3 woods for men with a shaft length of 42.5 inches and the corresponding graphite 3 woods with a length of 43 inches.

The women’s clubs are one inch shorter than men’s 3 woods.. In other words, a women’s steel 3 wood is 41.5 inches long and their graphite 3 wood is 42 inches long. These measurements are often considered to be the standard lengths for the 3 wood golf clubs.

Most players are comfortable playing their 3 woods with a length ranging between 42.5 inches and 43 inches. However, some golfers prefer a slightly shorter length of 42 inches for their 3 wood.

Shaft Length Difference Between a Driver and 3 Wood

The difference between the length of a driver and 3 wood is 1 inch. The length of the average driver is 43.5 inches and the length of a 3 Wood is 43.5 inches.

In the past, the standard length for men’s drivers with stainless steel shafts used to be 43.5 inches while those with graphite shafts were 44 inches long.

However, in the present times, the driver has a standard shaft length of 45 inches. Women’s drivers that used to be 43 inches long are considered to have a standard length of 44 inches these days.

The 3 wood is the longest golf club in the complete set of fairway woods. The shaft length typically ranges between 42 inches and 43 inches for men. Women’s 3 wood clubs are comparatively shorter by an inch.

The difference in shaft length between a driver and a 3 wood in a golfer’s bag is generally about 1.5 inches to 2 inches with the driver being longer of the two golf clubs. In some cases, the length variation is just one inch.

The following are some lengths for the driver and 3 wood that players are comfortable using for their game.

• Some golfers opt to play with a 45 inches long driver. They prefer their 3 woods to be 42.5 inches or 43.5 inches long. However, some of them would rather have their driver slightly shorter at 44.5 inches length while the 3 wood length remains the same.
• A few golfers have a 43.5 inches or 44 inches driver in their golf bag and a 42 inches 3 wood to go with it to help them achieve the desired launch and ball flight.
• Few players are comfortable using a 45.5 inches driver and a 43 inches 3 wood as these lengths give them the desired results.
• Some golfers use a 43 inches driver and a 41 inches 3 wood because these lengths help them have more control, gain distance and hit the sweet spot more often.

Most players prefer using drivers that are shorter or just marginally longer than the standard length. This is because they feel that shorter drivers help them gain on distance. But it’s worth noting that some golfers are comfortable handling a 48 inches driver.

41 inch 3 Wood

The following are some experiences of golfers using a 41 inch 3 wood golf club.

• This length helped them have better control over the golf club. However, they tend to experience a lower launch and a slight loss in velocity.
• The club felt lighter and it is easier to swing for those who have a swinging problem with their 3 wood.
• The 41 inches length allowed them to deliver more accurate shots than when they used 3 woods of other lengths.
• They cut down their 3 woods to 41 inches length because the 3 wood is easier to hit with this length although they had to make a compromise on the distance factor.

42 inch 3 Wood

A few golfers prefer opting for a 42 inch 3 wood golf club due to the following reasons.

• This length for the 3 wood helps them to be more consistent with their shots than if the wood were shorter or longer.
• The club helps them to hit longer and achieve a little more distance when compared to other lengths as well as helps them to gain more control with this length.
• The club with this length is more usable and allows players to render their best performances when they play off the deck or off the tee.
• The club is easier to hit on fairways and not so good lies while allowing them to swing it hard with good control over the 3 wood.
• The club has often helped them to be more consistent with their shots and hit the center of the clubface with solid contact compared to 3 woods with other lengths.
• The club with 42 inches length has proved to be beneficial for some who want a lighter swing weight and a low loft. However, some players haven’t felt the swing weight to be lighter.
• The club allows them to launch the ball easier and straighter than with other lengths apart from offering them a good and tight distance dispersion.
• The club has a flat lie angle that helps those who are struggling to get their direction right with a fairway wood without any significant loss in distance.
• The club assists them in keeping the ball as low as they want while remaining aggressive through impact at the same time.

It’s interesting to note that some golfers use a 43 inch long 3 wood but choke down an inch rather than cut off an inch. It gives them the same effect of playing with a 42 inch 3 wood fairway wood.

43 inch 3 Wood

This is often considered to be the standard size for a 3 wood men’s golf club. There are some reasons why golfers have considered opting for a length of 43 inches for their fairway wood.

• The club helps them to geta flatter ball flight in comparison with other 3 woods with shafts of different lengths.
• The club is useful for those who like to experience a light swing weight with their 3 wood as well as for those who want to cover a long distance using their fairway wood.
• The club is ideal for those with a relatively high handicap.
• The club is a good option for those who want to locate the fairway on tight holes.
• The club offers assistance in hitting high approach shots into the greens on long par-4 and par-5 courses.

44 inch 3 Wood

Most golfers do not opt for a 44 inches length for their 3 wood clubs. This is because 44 inches length is considered to be the standard length of a driver. A driver is longer than a 3 wood in a player’s golf bag.

However, there is one main reason why some golfers opt for 44 inches length for their fairway wood. The club is ideal for those who give importance to distance and want to gain as much yardage as possible.

45 inch 3 Wood

There are a few players who choose to use a 45 inch 3 wood.

The following list highlights some experiences of golfers who use a 45 inches shaft for their 3 wood.

• They can cover quite a long distance with this 3 wood, which is close to 20 yards more than what they would have achieved with a 43 inches shaft. This makes it ideal for players who are concerned about achieving maximum distance.
• They encounter more mishits and less accuracy with this golf club in contrast to when they used 3 wood clubs of lesser shaft length.
• The club has a very high swing weight that makes it difficult to use for slow swingers or golfers with slow swing speeds.

What is the Best 3 Wood Length?

As mentioned earlier, a 3 wood is the longest fairway wood barring the driver that is considered to be a 1 wood. There is no fixed length that can be considered as the best 3 wood length for a golfer.

Each size has its advantages and disadvantages. However, by and large, most players are comfortable with using a 42 inch 3 wood. Some players do justice to their game with a 43 inch 3 wood.

The reason why some golfers prefer a 42 inch is that this size helps them to get more control especially for Par 3’s.

Furthermore, a 3 wood of this size allows them to hit more solidly and achieve the maximum consistency. I find golfers seem get their best results using short fairway woods.

Some players are comfortable playing with a 43 inches 3 wood because they find that this size helps them better when they use it off the tee and from the deck.

On the other hand, golfers who want to increase their yardage or distance considerably tend to choose a 3 wood with a longer shaft. Their drivers also have large shafts in proportion to their 3 woods.

Some players suggest that it is advisable to go in for a wood of the shorter size when trying to decide between two woods with marginally different sizes. For example, if the choice is between a 42.5 inches wood and a 43 inches wood, the former size is a better option.

Some golfers also recommend getting a large 3 wood and try playing it by choking it down at different levels rather than cutting down on the shaft. This can help in arriving at the best 3 wood length.

Male data is captured across 40+ different events and 200+ different players.

Data is captured at both PGA TOUR and DP World Tour events with majority coming from PGA TOUR events.

Averages are based on data from competition as well as on the range.

During a practice session on the putting green at The Riviera Country Club on Tuesday ahead of The Genesis Invitational, tournament host Tiger Woods and fellow PGA TOUR player Jason Day had a moment of mutual putter appreciation.

What’s in Tiger Woods’ bag at The Genesis Invitational

While catching up with Day on Tuesday, Woods reached for Day’s new custom Scotty Cameron Tour-Only black mallet putter while simultaneously handing off the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS prototype blade that Woods won 14 majors with throughout his career. Like true gearheads, they analyzed each other’s putters and even hit a few practice putts with them.

Woods and Day have very different putter constructions: the Scotty Cameron that Day now uses is a large, rounded black mallet with a short slant neck, and it’s significantly heavier overall than the sub-330-gram silver blade putter that Woods has employed for 22 years.

While Woods seemed genuinely interested in testing Day’s putter, Day is more interested in the historical significance of Woods’ putter. Following their moment on the putting green, GolfWRX.com caught up with Day to get his thoughts on Woods’ putter.

“I’ve held it numerous times, and to me, it feels light,” Day said. “But I’ve always played a pretty heavy putter. Mallets are obviously different than his conventional blade. It’s like, that thing has won a lot of majors. I don’t know how else to explain it. It’s like holding someone’s baseball bat that they hit their 3,000th hit with. Or the football Tom Brady used in his last touchdown throw or something epic like that. It’s pretty cool.”

With 14 major championships on its resume, on an unbelievably worn-in sweet spot, Woods’ putter is certainly a first ballot hall-of-famer when it comes to golf equipment, and it’s arguably the most valuable piece of memorabilia in golf (his backups sell for six figures!).

As for the rest of Woods’ bag setup at the Genesis Invitational, he’s making just one change since his PNC Championship start in December, but it’s one you’ll have to look closely to see.

He’s replacing the 2020 model TaylorMade P770 3-iron with the new-and-improved 2023 version. The forged face, hollow body P770 of 2023 features slightly less offset than the 2020 version and, as expected, improved technology — more tungsten, less-dense SpeedFoam Air — and the lowest center of gravity the irons have ever featured. In short, it’s a more forgiving iron that is easier to launch higher with more green-holding stopping power..
